Important Tips Take Your Time Allow 1-2 hours for this repair and be patient. Most mistakes are caused by rushing through the steps. Resting time for the adhesive to set will also be required after the repair. Be Gentle Remember that you are handling fragile hardware. Stay Organized Note the placement of screws and small parts as you disassemble the device. Keep screws and small parts from each step separate and laid out on a clean flat surface. Use the included logo magnet to keep screws from rolling away. Use a paperweight to hold your booklet open or follow the flowchart online. Warranty Information We offer a lifetime warranty on any unused component that still has all protective films and stickers attached, or that is not functioning properly. You have waived the option for professional repair by attempting this on your own, therefore accepting responsibility for the outcome. The Apple warranty is void when the device is damaged, but further opening the device will void any supplemental insurance you may have purchased. step

1

Apply Heat & Insert iSesamo

Heat Tool

iSesamo

Moving in a circular motion around the frame, heat all four sides of the digitizer using the hot air gun or hair dryer. Once the glass reaches a temperature between 100째 and 120째 the adhesive will begin to loosen. Insert Tool Here

Display/Screen iPad Frame

In the upper left corner of the iPad, insert your iSesamo between the aluminum frame and glass. Note: Keep your heat gun or hair dryer ready as the digitizer will continue to cool. Frequently applying heat will keep the adhesive loose and allow removal of the digitizer assembly.

2

Heat & Lift Glass

Heat Tool

iSesamo

Guitar Pick

Using the iSesamo or metal spudger, start along the upper left corner of the iPad to heat and lift the glass (accompanying video shows iPad laying upside down). Once you have an opening, insert a guitar pick to prevent the glass from adhering back to the frame. Note: On a badly damaged digitizer, pieces of glass will break off as you start heating and lifting the digitizer. If the LCD is exposed from a badly damaged digitizer DO NOT apply direct heat onto the LCD.

step

3

Move Down & Right

Heat Tool

iSesamo

Guitar Pick

Continue creating a gap with the spudger or iSesamo and slowly move down the left side of the iPad. Insert a guitar pick about every 2 to 3 inches.

Heat the bottom of the iPad again, and use the spudger to separate along the bottom edge, going around the home button. Insert guitar picks for the glass to rest on.

step

4

Move Across the Top

Heat Tool

iSesamo

Guitar Pick

Move back to the top of the iPad and apply a bit more heat. Use the spudger to hold the corner open so you have enough space to insert the iSesamo. Two antennas are located to the left and right of the front facing camera. They are adhered to the glass of the digitizer assembly. Hold the iSesamo as close to the glass as possible and use a sawing motion to carefully separate the cables from the glass. Use this motion to the sides of the camera as indicated by the alternating arrows in the photo above, but go around the camera once you reach the center of this edge. Insert guitar picks to hold.

Heat Right Side

Heat Tool

Now that you have separated the top, bottom, and left sides of the iPad, apply heat along the right edge. As you heat, slowly begin to open the iPad on the left side. As adhesive strips may fall, make sure they are moved away from the LCD so they do not re-adhere to other surfaces.

6

Lay Open Digitizer

Heat Tool

iSesamo

Once the digitizer is free from the frame; lay the digitizer open like a book as shown. Separate more of the adhesive by running the iSesamo along the fold between the frame and screen. CAUTION: Do NOT insert tools at the area indicated by the red ovals above. Note: With a badly damaged digitizer, pieces of glass may have fallen onto the LCD. Remove the glass using a very soft bristled brush such as a cosmetic brush. The key is to not scratch the LCD.

10

step

7

Remove Corner Screws

Phillips screwdriver

Tweezers (optional)

Remove four Phillips screws from each corner of the LCD. The upper screws are covered with tape. Lift the tape with tweezers to expose the screws; do not remove tape. Note: The screw in the upper right corner (blue circle) is a different size than the other three. Make note of this as you set it aside for reassembly. iPad Air Screen Replacement

Remove Screw

Phillips screwdriver

Remove the single Phillips screw covering the battery connector.

14

iPad Air Screen Replacement

step

10

Disconnect Battery Power

Note: In the accompanying repair video, a modified guitar pick is used to separate the battery connector. You may trim one to look this way, or you may use the pointed ends of two standard guitar picks inserted under the corners of the connector.

Guitar Pick

Insert the modified guitar pick, or the ends of two standard guitar picks, between the battery and the logic board just enough to lift the hooks underneath off the battery. Using either of these methods should leave a clear space where the screw hole is located. Now there is no power and you can remove the display without risk to the backlight fuse. iPad Air Screen Replacement

Separate Digitizer

With the cables free, you may now separate the digitizer from the logic board. Set the digitizer aside as some parts will be transferred to the new screen.

20

iPad Air Screen Replacement

step

16

Frame Inspection

Inspect the metal frame for damage, dents, or depressions. Damaged corners will prevent new screens from seating properly and can cause the new glass to break. Most dents in the frame can be flattened with a socket rested against the inside of a dented corner and a small hammer to tap the socket toward the outside. Avoid any damage to the frame by always making your tapping motions outward to avoid accidentally harming internal components. Slightly jagged edges may only require filing with a small metal file. Be careful to keep metal shavings out of the iPad.

21

step

17

Remove Adhesive & Clean Frame

Spudger

iPad 2 shown here

Use the enclosed Adhesive Remover Pad to clear away all of the former screen's adhesive left on the frame. All old adhesive must be thoroughly removed to create a perfect seal between the digitizer and the frame. Remaining adhesive will prevent the digitizer from properly seating. Using the flat edge of the nylon spudger, carefully scrape the adhesive off. Once all adhesive is removed, wipe-down the frame with the included alcohol prep-pads. Watch our accompanying video on Youtube for complete cleaning tips.

22

iPad Air Screen Replacement

step

18

Setup New Screen

After giving the frame a few minutes to allow the alcohol solution to evaporate, lay your new screen face down immediately to the right of the iPad frame. Note: The front and back of the new screen have protective films on them. Do NOT remove these films. That will be covered in a later step.

24

Check iPad Functions

Gently fold the new screen left over the frame and lay it down. Before you complete the repair, test all of the functions of the iPad by powering it on and checking all of the following:

• Power button

• Front-facing camera

• Mute switch

• Rear-facing camera

• Volume up/down

• Microphone

• Digitizer/Touch

• Charging port

• Display and Light

• WiFi and Cell signal

step

25

Clean LCD

Reopen the iPad like a book. Ensure that the LCD is clean and free of any dust, dirt, or fingerprints. Keep a soft-bristled brush handy, like a clean cosmetic brush, to quickly and gently brush away any dust before removing protective films. You should still be wearing gloves. Note: Make sure you are in a clean area free of airborne dust and dirt. Even the smallest piece of dust can be visible from inside the sealed iPad.

step

26

Remove Adhesive & Film

A

B

Tweezers

A. Remove adhesive backing from the thin strips along the edges of the new digitizer. B. Peel off the digitizer’s clear interior protective film. CAUTION: Do not touch the inside of the digitizer once the protective film has been removed. Fingerprints are extremely visible against the black background of the LCD.

iPad Air Screen Replacement

31

step

27

Place & Align Digitizer

Lift the right side of the digitizer glass. Align the middle edges of the screen and the frame and carefully flip the screen over to the left. Align the side you just flipped (now on the left) to the left edge of the frame as you lay the digitizer down flat. You may still have a gap on the now right edge of the iPad. Use the flat end of the spudger to gently press in a flex cable which may be in the way.

32

iPad Air Screen Replacement

step

28

Seal Digitizer

Run your hands up the sides and press the digitizer into place in the frame. The digitizer should fit snuggly. Inspect all edges of the iPad closely to ensure that the glass is resting correctly inside and slightly below frame edge. Once again, test all of the functions of the device as you did in Step 24.

iPad Air Screen Replacement

33

step

29

Rest In Frame

Heat Tool

Place the iPad face down on a padded surface and place 5-10 pounds of books on top as a weight for 3 hours. Remove the front protective film and apply even heat to the front surface reaching approximately 100 degrees. Turn the iPad back over face-down and use the books as weight again for several more hours. Note: Applying this steady, even pressure for an extended period of time will ensure a strong adhesive bond so the screen does not separate from the frame over time.
