DINING N E W M E N U B R I NGS

T O P O RT S I D E Head chef Richard Tan says the new menu is an interesting fusion that focuses predominantly on Colombian and Asian flavours. “Since I began my career at 15 and I have always been inspired to learn about food and flavours from every culture,” he said. “My background is in Asian cuisine but I was introduced to Colombian flavours many years ago through friends of mine and have loved them ever since.

Tree Cycle Coffee has already become a favourite at Portside Wharf since it opened in June and the quaint little coffee shop is now launching a new menu that features dishes from the owners’ Colombian roots. For breakfast you can’t go past the ‘huevos pericos’ Colombian scrambled eggs on buttered toast with caramelized onion and tomato - “just the way our Mums cook it at home,” says co-owner Andres Rodriguez. Also new to the menu is ‘arepas’ - traditional corn cakes that can be found on just about every street corner in Colombia. Made with white or yellow maize, these delicious little morsels are served with a selection of condiments including guacamole, chorizo, chicken and cheese.

“To be able to combine my two favourite cuisines is really exciting and the menu I have put together celebrates the best of both cultures. “There are plenty of salads for the warmer months but we also have some really trendy breakfast options and have brought in a range of healthy dishes like lemongrass beef, Middle Eastern lamb and beetroot salmon which are the perfect meals for gym enthusiasts.” The smoothie and cold pressed juice menu has also been updated to feature new seasonal fruits as well as some tropical fruits from South America including lulo, guava and guanabana. And of course, you can’t go past the distinctive flavours of quality Colombian coffee!

How to prevent

YELLOW TEETH According to Smiling Dental at Portside Wharf, there are two main reasons why teeth slowly turn from white to yellow. Firstly, food and drinks that stains them directly; secondly, acids in certain foods and drinks that wear away your teeth’s white enamel. Tooth enamel is naturally white. When your enamel starts to wear down it becomes translucent and starts to show the underneath tooth layer called dentine. This dentine layer has a naturally yellower tone to it than that of the enamel that covers it, so the thinner your enamel layer becomes, the more yellow the teeth will appear.

Smiling Dental says there are two simple ways to prevent yellow teeth... 1

Do not brush your teeth as soon as you eat or drink any of these substances as the enamel becomes softer for at least half an hour after eating or drinking. Brushing during this time can make things worse by wearing away the weakened enamel. A better way is to simply have a big sip of water after you’ve finished your meal or drink to clear away any acids or staining compounds.

THE DRESSMAKER CLUB DENDY PREVIEW

Foods and drinks that cause yellow teeth include black tea, soft drinks, sports drinks, sugary sweets, red and white wine, curry and other sauces, fruit juices, brightly coloured fruits and vegetables.

2

An increasing number of people are turning to various teeth whitening methods to get a whiter smile. If you already have yellow teeth this is the fastest way to quickly turn your teeth whiter. At Smiling Dental, we offer two options for teeth whitening - in chair or take home. For any further information regarding these services please phone 07 3268 2116 or stop in for a visit at Portside.

Set in the 1950s, The Dressmaker is a bittersweet comedy about a glamorous young woman who returns after many years in Europe, to her small home town in rural Australia. When Tilly (played by Kate Winslet) comes home, she not only reconciles with her ailing mother Molly (played by Judy Davis) but, with her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women of the town in such a way that she gets sweet revenge on those who have wronged her in the past. She also falls unexpectedly in love, which leads to her greatest loss and her most destructive deed. Join us on Thursday, October 22 10:30am and 6:30pm for the Club Dendy preview of this lovely little film.

LIVING PROPERTY AFFORDABILITY LURES SYDNEYSIDER TO BRISBANE. Soaring residential property prices in Sydney are driving people across the border to take advantage of Queensland’s comparatively affordable market and this trend is tipped to continue, according to an industry leader. Brookfield Residential Properties General Manager, Lee Butterworth, said the phenomenon was a usual part of the property market cycle and had occurred several times in the past. “When we see Sydney and Melbourne residential prices start to peak there is usually a flow-on effect that positively impacts the Queensland market within the following 18 months,” he said. “We are starting to see that now and I believe it will continue to gain momentum throughout 2015. “What you can get for your dollar in Brisbane is superior in terms of size and location to many markets interstate and buyers see the value that our property represents.” One such buyer who has bought in Brookfield’s prestigious Portside Wharf development on the Brisbane River at Hamilton is Sydneysider Tenille Kelly. Ms Kelly has packed up her home in Cronulla and moved to Brisbane to avoid “living in a shoe box”. The 35 year old Revenue Manager has purchased a two bedroom plus study apartment on the second level of Pinnacle at Portside Wharf complete with river views and a car space - something she said she could never have afforded in Sydney.

“After realising all I could afford was a shoe box, I turned my sights to a more affordable market that still offered a similar lifestyle.” “For me, being able to see where the area was headed and what it would look like in 15 to 20 years was really important,” she said. “The future plans include plenty of parks and open space so you know it will retain its feeling of openness and not end up an industrial area.”

“Looking at apartments in Sydney is scary,” she said.

Ms Kelly said Portside Wharf’s location, with its proximity to ferries and buses, was also a major drawcard.

“After realising all I could afford was a shoe box, I turned my sights to a more affordable market that still offered a similar lifestyle.

“Portside Wharf offers the conveniences of city living but with a spacious, open feel,” she said.

“It came down to pricing and what I could get in Brisbane in terms of apartment size, views, quality finishes and location was far better than anything I could afford in Sydney so it was absolutely worth the move.”

“I was really impressed that I could to live on the waterfront in a precinct with restaurants, a cinema and everything I needed at my doorstep for a reasonable price.”

Ms Kelly said moving to Brisbane had made it possible for her to buy her first home and also set herself up for the future.

Mr Butterworth said Ms Kelly was only one example of the wave of interest in Brisbane property by interstate purchasers who feel they are priced out of the Sydney or Melbourne market.

“Portside Wharf is not only a great place to live, but it’s also a great place to invest,” she said. “Thanks to the affordability of the market here, I now have plans to purchase an investment property in the precinct in the next 12 months.” Ms Kelly said when she started to investigate the Brisbane market she looked at several areas including West End and Fortitude Valley. She said the fact that Portside Wharf and the greater Northshore Hamilton urban renewal development had a vision and a master plan played a huge factor in her decision on where to purchase.

“Portside Wharf offers exceptional value and people are buying now so they can enjoy the lifestyle benefits of the precinct as well as the economic benefits of the Brisbane property market,” he said. Portside Wharf is home to 40 retailers and six residential buildings. It is located six kilometres from the CBD and 15 minutes from the domestic and international airports and with easy access to major roads and public transport including the CityCat. Prices in Portside Wharf’s latest stage Pinnacle, which is now more than 80 per cent sold, start from $630,000.
