A TRUSTED FINANCIAL ADVISOR
J. Paul Lee wants to see his clients get the biggest bang for their buck The phones in J. Paul Lee’s office did not ring off the hook with calls from panicked clients in the midst of the unprecedented market meltdown of September 2008. “I don’t think one client called me before I called them,” says Lee, a veteran financial planner and co-owner of The Davis&Lee Financial Planning Centre in Rothesay. “They were unnerved, of course, but not devastated or panicked.” And why were his clients so calm in the wake of such a financial crisis? Because Lee builds relationships with his clients and properly prepares them for the investment products they use, including explaining the risks and volatility involved with each.
4
“They understood the investments they had and they knew the market would rebound,” says Lee. In addition, says Lee, his clients know he watches their backs and has built them a financial plan that offers both flexibility and the most protection possible. It’s Lee’s reputation for building meaningful relationships based on trust with his clients and giving them solid financial advice that has made him one of the area’s most sought-after financial planners. An experienced businessman who has called the Kennebecasis Valley home since 1979, Lee began his financial planning career in 1993 with Met Life. A believer in lifelong learning, Lee
earned his Certified Financial Planner designation in 1998 and his Chartered Life Underwriter and his Chartered Financial Consultant designations in 2002. He offers a full-slate of financial planning services but specializes in pre and post retirement planning, estate planning and planning for small business owners. The best part of his job, he says, is visiting with his clients because many of them have become his close friends. “When you are someone’s financial planner, you are most likely going to work with them for years, so I choose my clients and they choose me,” he says. “We choose each other because we know we will be able to work together
J. Paul Lee for years. And as a result, you end up enjoying each other. I’ll drop by with paperwork for them and when the work talk is done, they will say, ‘Hey, how about a glass a wine?’ and we’ll have a visit.” Lee helps his clients with everything from RRSPs, RRIFs and RESPs to life insurance, disability and critical illness insurance as well as corporate insurance funding involving buy-sell agreements and business interruption for example. He especially enjoys helping small business owners organize their operations and plan for the future. He says some business owners don’t have a solid handle on all the options available to help them save money and grow their operations. “I want to see my clients get the biggest bang possible for their buck. I can show them how to save money, so they can feather their nests for retirement,” he says. “I try to make the complex simple.”
Lee says he takes as much time as necessary to develop the right plan for each client, a plan that offers both flexibility and as much protection as possible. “We don’t do a slam-dunk here,” he says. “I don’t mind several interviews to get to the right conclusion.” Lee says people who are in the market for a financial planner should make sure they get satisfactory answers to the following questions before agreeing to work with them: How long have you been in the business? Who are you affiliated with? What are your credentials? If you don’t have credentials, why not? What professional organizations do you belong to? In his spare time, Lee is active in his
community, including completing a two-year commitment with the CGA Society of New Brunswick as its only non-CGA representative on the Board of Governors. He is a past board member and Treasurer of the Kennebecasis Valley Chamber of Commerce and is also one of two founding members of a business networking group in Saint John called The Fundy Trade Organization . He is currently serving as Program Chair for the New Brunswick Chapter of Advocis (The Financial Advisors Association of Canada). Lee has just been elected as President of The Campers Association of Scenicview Golf Course and Campground. He and his wife Connie, who co-owns the business and works as the office administrator, have four adult children and several grandchildren. They enjoy spending free time with their 2 Shih Tzus, making home-made wine, playing 8-ball and golfing at their summer place at Scenicview Golf Course and Campground.

How to Choose a Laser Clinic Joan Mercier, owner of Rothesay Laser Clinic and one of the first to introduce laser technology to the Saint John area, offers her best advice to help you choose a laser clinic:
Where Innovation and Experience Meet Rothesay Laser Clinic’s Joan Mercier is passionate about helping people
A wonderful hidden gem is tucked away in one of Rothesay’s tree-lined neighbourhoods. When people arrive at this lovely place, they instantly feel welcome and comfortable. What is this gem? Rothesay Laser Clinic, a Medical Aesthetic Clinic for Hair Removal and Cosmetic Skin Enhancement. Owned and operated by Joan Mercier, Rothesay Laser Clinic has it all – an experienced owner, one of the highest quality and highly-rated lasers in the industry, Apogee Elite, an overwhelming history of success for clients and some of the most innovative treatments and products available today. Mercier has been in business for 35 years, opening Joan’s Electrolysis in 1975. In 2001, Joan, always innovative, became one of the first to offer laser hair removal technology in this region. “I have a passion for helping people feel good and confident, and I feel we can help them here,” says Mercier, who says too many people suffer in silence with unwanted body hair, spider veins or damaged skin. “We’re really good at getting the results people want. I know I’ve made a difference in the lives of so many people and that’s what is so rewarding to me.” Mercier says her clinic’s Apogee Elite laser is one of the best technologies in the industry, and is one of the key reasons she has been able to help so many clients. “If you’re using the right laser, you will see results much sooner with less treatments and we can prove it.”
Rothesay Laser Clinic offers a whole host of services including Hair and Spider Vein Removal, Laser Facials, PCA Chemical Peels, Pigment, Microdermabrasion as well as Botox and Juvederm. For the past 3 1/2 years Dr. G. Sparkes, Certified Plastic Surgeon has been at the clinic to administer Botox and Juvederm fillers. Mercier says she likes to keep adding new services so she can find more ways to help her clients. To that end, she has recently started offering her clients the opportunity to enhance their faces through permanent make-up. Sandra Despres of Laval, Quebec, one of the foremost experts in Permanent Make-Up, comes to Mercier’s clinic once every six weeks to offer her services. Rothesay Laser Clinic will also soon become one of the KV areas trained and registered fitters of Sigvaris Medical Compression Stockings (Rx & OTC). Clients will be able to come to the Clinic to access that service or have an In-Home Visit with Michele Breen whom Joan is pleased to welcome back to Rothesay Laser Clinic. One year ago, the clinic also added another Certified Laser Technician, Narges Bagherkhan, who has 8 years experience in Laser Hair and Vein Removal. “I just want to keep growing and innovating. I really want to help people feel confident. We are all about customer service.”
1) Make sure you go in for a free consultation to ensure you like the way the clinic looks and feels. 2) Avoid clinics that pressure you to sign up on the spot for treatments. 3) Make sure the technicians are interested in what treatment will work for you rather than how much you will be paying. 4) Make sure the person treating you has extensive experience and knowledge of laser technology. 5) If you are checking out a clinic, be sure to be comfortable with the experience and knowledge of all the staff there because the person you visit for your consultation may not be the person who eventually treats you. 6) Be informed. Gather as much knowledge about laser technology before you go and ask lots of questions. 7) Make sure the laser used on you is the best for your skin and hair type.

An Interview with Darren Tissington of Select Kitchens How did Select Stone/Kitchens start? Select Stone was started in 2007, after I was looking for a product that I could import and was in demand. I looked at several building products after seeing the growth of the housing market in Atlantic Canada. I spent many hours moving in on a product that was in demand but was not serviced well in our market. Granite showed up with a 35 per cent annual growth rate throughout North America, and I made a decision to bring in some test material to feel out the market. Since that original test, we have seen excellent growth and continue to improve our selection and service area. The decision for us to go into kitchens was really one that was made by our granite clients. We had several customers ask us if we could supply cabinets with the same great quality and service. The demand reached a point in the summer of 2008
10
when the decision was made to become a full-blown kitchen cabinet company. How do you differ from other companies? I believe the biggest difference in our company compared to other kitchen companies is that we offer packages where we include granite and the cabinets together with fast turnaround times. Our cabinets are from Merillat cabinetry and they are owned by Masco, which is the largest cabinet producer in North America. We decided to go with a big brand so we could give the customer the best in the market and have them feel confident that they can depend on the quality for years to come. That being said, our granite is produced by the finest craftsman in the industry with years of experience. There are a lot of companies out there that just set the granite in a machine and let
the machine do the work. Our company is a craftsman shop, with every piece of granite being overseen and worked on by some of the best people in the industry. There is a lot of heart that goes into each piece, and our staff is proud to be able to prepare something that will last a lifetime in someone’s home. What is the biggest challenge you have faced? One of the biggest challenges we have faced as a company is the fast growth that we have had. We pride ourselves on our relationships with our customers and sometimes when things are so busy, it is hard to develop the lasting relationships we would like to see. Our goal is for our family to become a part of your family by giving you our utmost attention and providing you with a personal touch. It seems like in the days of big box stores, a lot of things become
Darren Tissington: Select Kitchens just a transaction, and that is not what Select Kitchens is all about. Most of our customers have been referred from family and friends that we have already done business with. Having done so many orders for families, it sometimes gets confusing when the same last names keep popping up! At the end of the day, we want the customer to remember us as a caring company. I know you have just opened up a store in Fredericton. Any other plans for the future? Yes, we did just open our first retail showroom in Fredericton in the Corbett centre in December 2009. Business has been very brisk, and things are going well in that market for us. We have a wonderful staff looking after people’s needs there, and we are exceeding our expectations in that market. Our next two retail outlets are a new showroom for Saint John and a new store in Moncton. Both locations have been
secured and designs are being done now for the interiors. Amazingly we have done very well in the Saint John market with a very small showroom at our new 10,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Quispamsis. We are very excited about the new 2500 sq ft showroom opening in Saint John. Our
endeavor. Far too many times people give up before they start because of their lack of belief. One of the hardest things to do is to be in business for yourself, but it is also one of the most rewarding too. I guess the best way to build belief in yourself is to continuously work on getting better and invest time in yourself daily. This is a discipline that will serve you well in the days to come. What would you like people to take away from this interview?
goal is to have the most informative and visual showrooms in the industry. Future plans for 2011 include expansion into Nova Scotia. Our plans are aggressive, but our people are fantastic, so we just set our goals and go for it! What would you say to aspiring entrepreneurs? The biggest thing I could say to an aspiring entrepreneur is to BELIEVE. You have to believe in yourself and your
As a company, we are continuously growing. We want people to know that our growth is not all about money, but more about the people we touch inside and outside our company and how we can enrich others. We believe success is doing well for the community and for the people in it. We look forward to serving new customers and appreciate all the customers that have made us what we are today.
The biggest thing I could say to an aspiring entrepreneur is to BELIEVE. You have to believe in yourself and your endeavor.

REALTORS® Offer Expertise and Experience Buying or selling your home is a huge decision and one that plays an integral part in your financial future and your family’s happiness. When you decide to take what may be the biggest financial step in your life, the first person you should consult is a REALTOR®.
job done right, you use a professional. Today’s complex market demands expertise and market resources not available to the average citizen. There are several very compelling reasons why you should enlist my professional services as your REALTOR®. Consider the following:
As your REALTOR® I can give you two things that are invaluable: expertise and experience. My skill can guide you through the details of the buying or selling process, and my knowledge of the housing market can help you make the best possible choice. REALTORS® are dedicated individuals whose professional obligation is to serve the best interests of their clients and customers.
1. Chances are your REALTOR® can get you a higher price for your property than if you tried to sell it yourself.
What a REALTOR® offers you It is not training alone that makes me as a REALTOR® so valuable – my expertise extends into every aspect of home ownership. As your REALTOR® I know how best to sell or buy a home and have an in-depth knowledge of the real estate market. They will gladly clarify any legal terminology or government regulations for you. For sellers, I develop a marketing plan that will include listing your property on the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®). I have access to this co-operative marketing system, which ensures the widest possible exposure for your property. I may also place other advertising and hold open houses if desired. I can also pre-screen buyers so that only those who are truly interested and qualified view your home. When it comes to negotiating a price, I can act as a mediator between you and the buyer. This will allow you to remain at “arm’s length” during the often-stressful negotiation process. Buyers can use me as their REALTOR® to access to the MLS® system to draw up a short list of homes that suit their specific needs and budget. Assistance in evaluating financing options and mortgage rates is also yours for the asking. The REALTOR® Relationship The relationship between you and your REALTOR® is one that goes beyond a simple business transaction. As your REALTOR® I will strive to know exactly what you want in a home and will make every effort to meet your needs. It is unlikely that you can afford to gamble with what has probably been the largest single investment you have made, namely your home. Selling a home without the help of a REALTOR® is not as easy as it may appear. Ask yourself the following: Do I know its true market value? Am I aware of the legal “ins and outs”? Can I arrange suitable financing? Can I qualify a potential buyer? Can I negotiate to a successful close? Can I write an enforceable contract? In today’s market, you get what you pay for and if you want the

2. You will likely sell your home a lot faster when you use the services of a REALTOR®. 3. Listing your home for sale through a REALTOR® on the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) means you get the widest possible exposure for your home. MLS® is a cooperative marketing system designed to bring sellers and buyers together. 4. As your REALTOR® I have the skills and resources to market your home effectively. 5. As your REALTOR® I know your neighbourhood -- I assess market conditions and property values daily. 6. I have been educated on the complex laws and regulations in real estate and am trained to put together a legally binding contract. 7. Negotiating price is a skill. As your REALTOR® I will negotiate objectively in order to get the best possible price for your home. 8. REALTORS® are on call and are usually available seven days a week to show your home. 9. As your REALTOR® I am aware of the many options available for financing the sale, and have the latest information on mortgages. 10. Moving up or down? As your REALTOR® I can open the doors to thousands of properties through MLS® and provide you with an up-to-date computerized list of homes suited to your needs, wants and budget. I pride myself on the quality of service I provide to all of my clients during and after any real estate transaction. Whether buying or selling a home you will be sure to find I will work for your best interests and to provide full support, not pressure. With my honesty, loyalty and accessibility I offer my clients the best possible guarantee of service. Free Safety Inspection Prevents Costly Oil Spill Fundy Mutual helps stop accidents before they happen The retired lady was astonished at the poor condition of her oil tank once she got a good look at it in the light of day. The deteriorated old tank was in such bad shape that she soon would have had a messy, expensive and dangerous oil leak on her hands if she hadn’t followed the advice of Jo-Ann Armstrong-Morris, a safety inspector at Fundy Mutual Insurance. When she discovered the dilapidated oil tank during a free inspection of the woman’s home, ArmstrongMorris recommended she replace it immediately. At first, the customer was quite upset. She thought her oil tank was in fine shape, thank you very much.
Armstrong-Morris, a certified WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) SITE Basic Inspector and Licensed General Insurance Agent since 1987, says she never ceases to be amazed by the safety problems – from small to big – that she finds during her routine inspections. Some of the most common? Missing guard rails on stairs, unsafe woodstoves, loose wires and faulty smoke detectors. Most of the problems aren’t major, but fixing them prevents accidents and saves lives.
“Every insurance company is going to be there for their clients after a loss occurs, Fundy Mutual wants to prevent the loss from happening in the first place,” says Brian Sutherland, sales manager. “We do free safety inspections for every new customer. We do it for safety and for preventative maintenance. Your house is the biggest asset you own, we provide maintenance for our vehicles, why not our home as well”.
But as she watched the old tank being carried up her stairs, the customer knew without a doubt that Armstrong-Morris’ advice had just saved her a lot of money and stress. “When I went back for the follow up after she had gotten a new tank, she apologized for being upset, and then thanked me,” says Armstrong-Morris. “Very soon oil would have escaped from that tank.” That’s just one example of how Fundy Mutual’s free safety inspections for every new client have helped prevent countless accidents.

Fundy Mutual Insurance Company Based in Sussex, Fundy Mutual is an innovative policy holder-owned insurance company with offices in Hampton, Grand Bay-Westfield, Rothesay and most recently , a new location in Saint John. A group of New Brunswick farmers launched the company over 65 years ago when property insurance was simply unavailable to rural residents. Farmers decided to pool their resources and form their own insurance company. Nowadays, Fundy Mutual is a full-service insurance company that offers its members tremendous value, protection and affordability. “It’s a small company run by a local board of directors who care about protecting insureds, giving back to their communities and keeping premiums affordable.,” says Sutherland. The free safety inspections are one of the reasons Fundy Mutual can keep its premiums so affordable, says Sutherland, because they often prevent accidents from happening in the first place. The safety inspections have resulted in Fundy Mutual’s property loss ratio being significantly lower than New Brunswick’s industry average. The Insurance Bureau of Canada’s 2008 report puts New Brunswick’s loss ratio on property at 116 per cent while Fundy Mutual’s came in at only 66.9 per cent. Sutherland says Fundy Mutual’s rates are also so competitive because the member-owned company isn’t as
Brian Sutherland and Jeff McGrath and Fundy's new office in Saint John profit-driven as its competitors. Fundy Mutual’s Management sets its rates based on history and statistics rather than profit. In this area of the province, Fundy has eight licensed insurance agents and seven experienced customer service representatives. The company also has an in-house adjuster to serve clients whenever needed. “Our agents work night and weekends. It’s insurance on your schedule, not ours,” says Sutherland. “Our people are experienced and knowledgeable. They make the difference. Our biggest asset is our staff, we have a great team , they really care, and it shows.” Fundy Mutual is also firmly committed to giving back to its community, says Sutherland.
The company donates three $2,500 scholarships annually to deserving high school students and has pledged $50,000 toward the construction of new PotashCorp Civic Centre in Sussex. The company supports a wide variety of other charitable causes as well, including the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta, the provincial Police Association, the Queens County fair, various minor hockey teams and the annual Harbour Lights Christmas campaign. “All the money we donate and raise stays right here in the community,” says Sutherland. “Supporting our community is an important part of who we are as a company.” For more information about Fundy Mutual, visit http://www.fundymutual.com

Who is Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) was founded in 1974 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes. JDRF is the leader in setting the agenda for type 1 diabetes research worldwide, and is the world’s largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes strikes children and adults suddenly, but lasts a lifetime. It requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure, nor does it prevent eventual complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation, and nerve damage. JDRF is an international organization

with affiliates in Australia, Denmark, India, Israel, and United Kingdom. For more information about JDRF Canada visit www.jdrf.ca. JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. In 2009, internationally JDRF directed nearly
$101 million (U.S.) to diabetes research. JDRFI funded research projects in 22 countries, including more than 40 human clinical trials. JDRF is not just funding basic science, but taking scientific developments and translating them into cures, treatments, drugs and therapies. We are finding and filling gaps in research to bring about cures as quickly as possible.

TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes The annual TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes unites communities across Canada to help find a cure for diabetes. The TELUS Walk is a fun way for families, friends and the corporate community to get involved and help make a difference in the lives of over 300,000 Canadians living with type 1 diabetes. Last year, the 2009 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes brought together over 45,000 Canadians at over 60 walk locations across the country! The 2010 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes will take place on June 13th at most Walk locations across Canada, including Saint John and Moncton. In New Brunswick there are also walks held in Miramachi, Oromocto, and Campobello Island. In addition to the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, JDRF also raises funds for research through their “Ride for Diabetes Research” at many sites across the country.
Outreach Program Imagine what it would be like to suddenly find out your child has type 1 diabetes, and their pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin. It now becomes your responsibility to determine how much insulin their body needs each day, and to inject them with this amount of insulin as needed, sometimes up to six times per day. In addition to this constant balance between meals, activity and insulin, parents constantly worry about their children’s future and the devastating effects diabetes can have on their child’s body. JDRF understands what newly diagnosed families experience in these early days, and beyond. In an effort to help these families, JDRF developed the “Outreach Program”. The Outreach Program partners a newly diagnosed family with a mentor family. The Outreach Program is about sharing, helping, listening and forming new friendships with people who understand the fears associated with recent diagnosis. The program is about touching families and supporting them when they need it the most. If you or someone you know could benefit from our Outreach Program, please contact Kelly at (506) 763-0001 or khare@jdrf.ca.
Diabetes Research Symposiums In addition to the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, many cities across the country host Diabetes Research Symposiums highlighting recent developments in JDRF funded research, and feature a motivational speaker. JDRF’s Diabetes Research Symposium will be held on March 29th in Saint John at the Saint John Regional Hospital, and March 30th in Moncton at the Crowne Plaza Downtown, with special guest Andrew McKee, President and CEO of JDRF Canada. Details on each of these Diabetes Research Symposiums can be found at www.jdrf.ca. JDRF is committed to finding a cure for diabetes and it’s complications through the support of research. If you are interested in putting together a team for our TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, support the Walk, or volunteer, please contact the Fundraising and Development Coordinators listed below: Kelly Hare, Fundraising and Development, Saint John, (506) 763-0001, khare@jdrf.ca. Goldsmith Studios
Goldsmith Studio
S
aint John’s own Gary Spicer, owner of Goldsmith Studio, has created custom jewellery for celebrities ranging from Elton John to George Michael to Princess Grace of Monaco. He once made a stunning necklace that sold for $12 million at the world-famous Graff’s in London. But it’s not the celebrity status of the customer or grandeur of the piece that Spicer loves most about being a master goldsmith. It’s the great feeling he gets when he’s designed a lovely piece of jewellery he knows will have special meaning to a family for years to come. “Whether you spend $200 or $20,000, you still get the same service, and I still get the same feeling of satisfaction of knowing I made a meaningful and beautiful piece of jewellery that will become a family heirloom,” says Spicer. “That’s the best part of what I do.” Goldsmith Studio and its owners Gary and Pam Spicer could, if you pardon the pun, easily be described as hidden gems. Tucked away in a corner of Sears at McAllister Place in Saint John, Goldsmith Studio is a classy and understated store that, surprisingly, carries one of the biggest selections of fine jewellery in the region. It’s also home to Spicer, who, remarkably, is a master goldsmith who was trained by the person who created Princess Diana’s stunning 18 carat oval blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring. “I can literally make anything out of precious metal,” says Spicer. “And I can repair anything you need repaired right here on the premises.” Born and raised in London, England, Spicer was just 16 years old when he started an apprenticeship as a goldsmith at one of London’s top custom workshops. He trained for five years, creatinge custom pieces for stores such as Cartier, Graff and Garad. By the time he was 21, he started his own company, manufacturing pieces for those same world-famous stores. Three years later, when Birks came looking for a master goldsmith to work for them in Atlantic Canada, Spicer and his wife flew to Saint John to check out the city. “We loved it here,” says Spicer. The Spicers and their two young children moved to Saint John two years later. When Birks went bankrupt and closed half its stores two years after they moved to Canada, the Spicers launched their own business and haven’t looked back. Pam, a successful hairstylist at the acclaimed Trevor Sorbie salons in London, took on the day-to-day responsibilities of running Goldsmith Studio. In addition to owning Goldsmith Studio, the Spicers also co-own Spicer, Smith & Cole Fine Jewellers in Fredericton, Just Silver and 24 GoldsmithsMfinal.indd 1
W. Smith & Co. in Saint John and Sears Watch and Jewellery Repairs in Moncton. They also operate their own manufacturing company – G&P Goldsmiths. As a group, those companies claim the distinction of being the largest independent jeweller in Atlantic Canada. Spicer hand picks all the diamonds sold in his store and says he loves hunting for the best precious gems. “Finding that special stone, Gary Spicer has created those rubies, custom jewellery for diamonds and celebrities ranging from sapphires, I enjoy that,” he Elton John to George Michael says, adding to Princess Grace of Monaco. that he still uses all his worldwide connections to ensure his store carries the best of the best. In fact, Goldsmith Studio store carries fine jewellery only – no silver or ornaments or fashion jewellery. That doesn’t mean every item comes with a huge price tag though. He’s got 10 carat gold earrings for as little as $10. “I’ve got customers from all walks of life and quality jewellery for all price ranges,” he says. Spicer says the cooperation between his other jewellery operations allows him to keep his prices competitive. Goldsmith Studio also offers customers a minimum four year warranty on any item in the store, and lifetime warranty on diamonds. “We stand behind our products,” he says. Although Goldsmith Studio rents space from Sears, the stores aren’t affiliated. However, customers can use their Sears card and take advantage of Sears’ deferred payment option at Goldsmith Studio. The store also has a layaway plan. The store also has experienced and well-trained staff who are exceptionally knowledgeable about gems as well as three other jewellers, all trained by Gary, who can do repairs on-site. Over the years, Spicer has had plenty of offers to move his business to some of Canada’s larger cities but he’s always turned them down. “It’s not for me. I love it here. This is my home,” says Spicer, who lives in the Kennebecasis Valley. “I love the river and the openness and the very friendly people. I like the Maritime way of life.” And despite having plenty of managerial duties now, he still sits at the work bench at least once a week and handles all the major repairs and all custom orders. “I love that,” he says. “I get to create something that is going to stand the test of time.”
Feature: Test Driving the Kia Sorento
“This vehicle had me at hello.” Busy local mom loves the all-new 2011 Kia Sorento
Digging through my purse in search of my car keys in a busy parking lot drives me absolutely nuts. Especially when it’s cold and windy outside and I’m carrying large bags of groceries and trying to keep my two young daughters from getting hit by passing cars. Say goodbye to that headache forever if you drive an all-new 2011 Kia Sorento. The 2011 Sorento EX-V6 Luxury, new on the Saint John Kia lot this month, boasts a wonderful “smart” key that solves one of my most maddening pet peeves. This “smart” key allows me to unlock the doors without putting my hands on my keys. As long as this wonderful little device is somewhere in my purse or in my pockets, all I have to do is press a button on the driver’s door handle and, presto, the doors are open. No digging or searching required. And I don’t need to search for the key once I am sitting behind the wheel either. Just hit the push start button and this stylish crossover comes to life.
The Kia Sorento also made my day-today transportation challenges a little easier and came with all the bells and whistles I could want, including a free three-month SIRIUS satellite radio subscription so I could rock out to 80s music as I ran my errands. The Sorento also features standard AUX and USB ports as well as an iPod compatible audio cable so I can bring my own tunes too. The other unexpected extras? Let’s start with the Bluetooth handsfree cell phone capability with voice activation. As long as my Blackberry is somewhere in the car and has Bluetooth capability, all I have to do is “tell the car” to phone home and then I can keep both hands on the wheel while speaking to my husband through the premium 10-speaker stereo system with surround sound.
I can also set the lights to turn off automatically every time I shut off the engine. No more annoying beeping or dead batteries. The volume on the stereo automatically adjusts when I hit the highway, and the dual climate control means I stay toasty warm in the passenger seat while my husband remains cool in the driver’s seat. This vehicle has loads of leg room and cargo space too. There’s handy underfloor storage, and the back seats fold down for more room. The vehicle comes with a useful cargo net to keep your belongings in place when the back is loaded as well as a privacy blind to protect prying eyes from scoping out any shopping bags you may have tucked in the back. The 5-year, 100,000 km Roadside Assistance warranty means I don’t have to worry about changing spare tires anytime soon either. I also liked the many safety features, including the dual curtain side-impact airbags with rollover sensor and the electronic stability control that will help keep the vehicle on track on icy roads.
“Mom, this car is amazing,” shouted my six-year-old from the backseat. “Can we buy it?
Love, love, love it. Yup, this vehicle had me at hello. The “smart” key is an unexpected touch of bliss in a brand that is better known for its affordability than its luxury. It’s only one of the many pleasant and luxurious surprises found on this newly designed family vehicle. I’m not an expert on cars or SUVs, and I don’t know a piston from a strut. But I do know this: As a busy working mother of two young girls, I loved driving this vehicle. It felt solid and safe and sturdy. And I could drive it with the peace of mind that comes from knowing it has a 5-year/100,000 km comprehensive warranty that covers virtually the entire vehicle.
The Sorento also boasts an in-dash navigation system that gives me turn-by-turn directions to virtually any destination in North America. If I’m in a new city and want to find the nearest shopping centre, this system will get me there. It has listings for almost any service imaginable, including attorneys and even funeral directors. The Sorento has a feature to allay my fears of backing up in such a big vehicle too. Because I’m used to driving a mid-sized car, I worried about hitting other cars as I backed out of parking spaces. But as soon as I put this vehicle in reverse, the rear-view camera kicks into gear and a picture of exactly what is behind me pops up on the dashboard. I also love the eight-way power adjustable leather seats (heated!) and the many handy storage compartments.
My daughters adored the two panoramic sunroofs as well as the twin cup holders contained on the fold-down center armrest in the back seat. No more fighting over whose drink goes where and there’s more room between them, which, well, cuts down on the number of times they will hit each other on long car trips. Enjoying the light streaming in from the sunroof and listening to the Disney channel on satellite radio, my daughters enjoyed the test drive as much as I did. “Mom, this car is amazing,” shouted my six-year-old from the backseat. “Can we buy it?

Escorted Motorcoach Tours: A super fun, savvy way to spice up your vacation! Enjoyable, friendly, and exciting vacations for everyone. If you are starting to plan your next getaway but the thoughts of shuffling maps and fighting with your GPS unit leave you cringing, a fully-escorted motorcoach tour may be just the thing you need to eliminate travel related stress and spice up tired vacation plans. So what can you expect from this sort of vacation option? Are motorcoach tours costly, too restrictive, or too impersonal? These are just a few of the motorcoach tour myths we address in this article. With 50 years in the group travel business and hundreds of escorted tours under our belt, we at Collins Tours and Consulting are confident you will find motorcoach tours to be a fun, affordable, carefree holiday experience that just can’t be beat. Escorted motorcoach tours incorporate a diverse array of activities to create a fun and welcoming adventure, both on and off the bus. Many of our clients find that they go from perfect strangers to lifelong friends in a matter of days. Grooving to a tour theme song and enjoying your favorite music and movies are just a few of the things that your tour escort arranges to foster group camaraderie. The fun doesn’t stop there. Cocktail parties and tailgate events are another way we can keep the party rolling. Aperitifs overlooking Times Square or a stag party in one of Boston’s Irish Pubs are other signature events we include as part of our escorted motorcoach tours. Together, these represent great examples of the many ways we work to turn ordinary vacations into lasting holiday memories. Professionally escorted motorcoach tours mean more of your vacation is spent enjoying yourself instead of planning your next move. They can also help eliminate some of the more stressful aspects of the vacation equation, like knowing what is hot and

what is not, where the best places are to shop and dine and which attractions are the most interesting and educational. These are just the sorts of details that your tour escort knows from firsthand experience. Your escort can also recommend activities tailored to your personal interests or activity level and supply discounted tickets for additional side-excursions that you would not be able to access on your own. The services, advice and direction provided by a professional tour manager are particularly attractive to the novice traveler or someone visiting an area for the first time. The group motorcoach tour market offers a great holiday option for everyone. There are tours to tantalize the more mature client, as well as many exciting special interest tours geared to the younger generation. Concert tours are particularly hot options, with packages that allow you to experience a great city and have the opportunity to enjoy a favorite artist in style. We get you VIP concert seats and provide door–to-door concert shuttle service. This means no parking nightmares or additional concerns about the drive home. All this for prices well below what the average person would pay if they tried to do the same trip on their own. Our annual sports tours (e.g. NASCAR and NHL hockey) are other special interest tours that we designed to meet local demand. Student trips, to exciting destinations such as New York City, Quebec and Boston are another popular branch of our escorted motorcoach tour division.
Saving you time and money so you get more for your vacation dollars A motorcoach tour vacation translates into a savings of both time and money. We do the research, planning and price negotiating for you. Sure, anyone can go online and collect details about a destination, research local attractions and book a hotel room. as Waddell-Leore Travel Agency), we are eligible for discounts on accommodations, meals and attractions that individuals can’t access. We also have developed important industry contacts that grant us access to pre-sale concert and sporting event tickets that are often inaccessible to the general public. Ultimately, our escorted motorcoach tours offer you quality travel options that save you time and money. That is the savvy travelers’ secret.
Organized, carefree, and comfortable holiday options Our escorted motorcoach tours are well managed, properly paced and designed with timely transitions. Without a tour escort on board, people can get distracted and miss departure deadlines, ultimately frustrating the entire group. Tour managers present a defined structure that keeps the tour flowing and the whole group happy. They also provide critical destination support, something that typically isn’t available to the individual traveler. Tour managers also professionally represent the group at Customs and Immigration inspections, handle your hotel check in/check out procedures, facilitate timely transitions and access to attractions, concerts, or sporting events and troubleshoot unexpected problems. In general, your tour escort is onboard to ensure that you experience a stressfree, well-managed vacation. Imagine a vacation without the usual worries of driving, navigating and parking in a foreign city. On an escorted motorcoach tour, your tour manager and professional coach driver handle this for you. And there’s no interpreting complicated maps, fumbling with GPS units or worrying about fuel prices or parking spots on this type of vacation. Our concert tours offer particularly great value, with door-to-door pre and post concert shuttle service, VIP seats for the show and a tour manager with you to ensure you get properly seated and have a great time. This translates into more time relaxing and enjoying your hardearned vacation dollars and ensures your overall satisfaction.

Nobody wants to lose a customer but it happens. For one reason or another customers choose to go somewhere else to do business. If we treat our customers properly we won’t lose many. Sure some will leave for a cheaper product or service but you get what you pay for. Sometimes a customer leaving is just not within our control. Here are some things that are in your control: • Great customer service • Consistent follow up • Fast response to problems or issues • Great products and services • Excellent relationship building Sometimes even doing all of that is not enough to keep a customer. When a customer leaves your business for another you have to handle it with grace. Although it is disappointing to lose a customer it is very important to preserve the relationship. Chances are, if you have done all of the right things, they will come back. Burning a bridge not only ensures your customer won’t come back but they’ll tell everyone else not to. We have all been hot under the collar about a customer leaving or losing a deal but it is not worth ending a relationship on a bad note for. Sales is as much about integrity and understanding as it is about making money. Maintain high standards and hold to a good value system and you will win more than you lose! by Eric Durant
