INSTITUTO CERVANTES 20th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL PROMOTION
LETTER FROM DIRECTOR THE INSTITUTO CERVANTES WILL SOON BE TWENTY YEARS OLD The Instituto Cervantes came into being on 21 March 1991, as a Spanish public institution for the promotion of the language and culture of Spain and the other Spanish-speaking countries. This means, of course, that the Instituto Cervantes will be celebrating its 20th “birthday during 2011. Consequently, we are congratulating ourselves. Not only because this is a special anniversary, but also because of the amazing growth of the institution during that time. The fact is that currently we have more than 70 centres in more than 40 countries throughout the world. Just looking at 2010, the Instituto Cervantes has had a 12% increase in enrolments in comparison with the previous year; a 13% increase in the number of candidates enrolled in the Diplomas in Spanish as a Second Language (DELE); a 27% increase in students enrolling in the Virtual Spanish Classroom (AVE) program; and a growth of 20% in members of the Associated Centres Network. Furthermore, the Instituto received five awards between September 2009 and August 2010. Yet the most important thing is the fact that these figures clearly illustrate the enormous interest there is around the world in learning our language and our culture. The Sydney centre of the Instituto Cervantes, inaugurated by their Majesties, the King and Queen of Spain, on 25 June 2009, makes a significant contribution to these figures. Each term the number of students enrolled has grown, as well as the number of people attending our cultural activities. Meanwhile, the number of people taking the Diploma in Spanish as a Second Language (DELE) examinations has almost doubled over this year. This is why we at the Sydney centre are also celebrating the 20th birthday of the Instituto Cervantes. We intend to do this by organizing a series of activities throughout the year. But also, and perhaps most importantly, by offering considerable discounts on the fees charged for our Spanish courses. We hope that this will facilitate access to our courses to all of those people who are interested in learning our language and getting to know more about our culture. Everyone is welcome! Our academic program for general language courses follows the levels presented by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The CEFR describes what a learner is supposed to be able to do at each level using the foreign language. These descriptors can be applied to any of the languages spoken in Europe, which provides a valuable basis for the common recognition of language qualifications. Each of our five levels, from basic user to independent user, is divided into different courses and each course consists of 30 hours of class attendance given in a period of approximately 10 weeks.

We continually invite researchers and writers to debates, discussions and seminars on literature, linguistics, art, cinema, history and much more. Most of the cultural activities are held in the Instituto Cervantes, and take place in the auditorium, which is situated on the first floor of the building. Usually, the events start around 6:30 pm. and most of them are free entry, but it is advisible to book your seat.
