Starting out with PowerPoint 2007

1. To add a new page click ‘New Slide’. To add a new slide with a different layout click the layouts drop down menu from the ‘Home’ tab.

3. You can find the options for editing and animations through the tabs along the top. Here the ‘Home’ tab is selected.

4. All tool bars appear from the tab menu, click an object and the format tab will appear containing more drawing tools.

2. This is where you can navigate each slide of your project by clicking on each slide.

Adding text to a page & formatting

1. Click the text box tool from the home tab and click and size a text box on your page. Click inside the box to type. The text box can also be resized, moved and rotated afterwards.

2. Text can be formatted from the Font area on the Home tab. Select the text first in the text box and then change font, size and colour.

3. You will find further text box formatting options from the Drawing area on the Home tab and from the Format tab when a text box in selected.

Changing the Background Colour

1. To change the background colour or use fill effects right click the slide and click ‘Format Background’ on the menu.

3. After the selection has been made you can apply the colour to the current slide by clicking ‘Close’ or apply the colour to all slides.

2. From the ‘Format Background’ window click the drop down menu and pick a colour or click ‘More Colours’ for a wider selection.

How to insert Pictures from File and Clip Art

1. To insert an image from your personal files click the ‘Insert’ tab and then the ‘Picture’ button.

2. The ‘Insert Picture’ window will open and from here find and select your saved picture file. Once selected click ‘Insert’.

3. To insert pictures by Clip Art click the ‘Clip Art’ button on the ‘Insert’ tab. A Clip Art search bar will appear to the right.

4. Use a search term and then click ‘Go’ and relevant clip art will appear below. Once you have found an image drag and drop onto the page.

Creating hyperlinks between pages

1. Select and right click the object or text which you wish to be the hyperlink button.

2a. Click ‘Hyperlink’ from the right click menu.

2b. You can also click the ‘Hyperlink’ button from the ‘Insert’ tab.

3. The ‘Insert Hyperlink window will open. Click the ‘Place in this Document’ button.

4. Click the slide you wish to hyperlink to from here. Then Click ‘OK’.

Linking pages using Action Buttons

1. Click the drop down menu from the ‘Drawing’ area on the ‘Home’ tab.

4. After the button is drawn the ‘Action Settings’ box will appear and from here select where you wish the button to link to from the ‘Hyperlink to’ drop down menu. Then click ‘OK’.

2. Then select and click the action button you wish to use.

3. Your cursor will turn into a drawing tool, using this click and drag to draw your action button.

Slide transitions

1. Transitions control the way a side moves from one to another. Click the ‘Animations’ tab for the transitions controls.

2. Different types of transitions can be selected. You can also alter the speed of the transition and add an accompanying sound. Important! If you are using hyperlinks to navigate your slides, disable the advance slide on mouse click option.

Recording your own sounds and speech Sounds can be recorded and saved in either Sound Recorder or Audacity in .wav format. Do not use the built in sound recorder in PowerPoint as it saves flies in a low sound quality. Make sure you save the sound files in the same folder as the PowerPoint file as this will be needed for the sounds to be played back in the talking book.

2. The ‘Action Settings’ window will appear, now click ‘Play Sound’ and use the drop down menu to find and click ‘Other sound’.

1. Left click the object you wish to link the sound to and click on the ‘Action’ button from the Insert tab.

3. The ‘Add Sound’ window will appear and from here you can find and select the sound you wish to insert. Then click ‘OK’

Inserting sounds from file

1. Click ‘Insert’ tab, Click the ‘Sound’ drop down button and pick Sound From File.

2. The ‘Insert Sound’ window will appear and from here you can find and select the sound you wish to insert. Then click ‘OK’

5. From the sound tools tab the sound can be looped and the symbol hidden during the slide show.

4. Once the sound is inserted a speaker symbol will appear. When clicked the sound tools options will appear on the tab bar.

3. You will now be asked whether you want your sound to play automatically or when clicked on the page.

Adding animation – Part 1

1. Click the object you want to animate and then click the ‘Animations’ Tab. Now click ‘Custom Animation’ from the tab.

2. The ‘Custom Animation’ side bar will now open. Animations can be added from the ‘Add Effect’ drop down menu.

3. Once the animation is created you can you can tailor and change the timing and speed from here.

Adding animation – Part 2 (motion paths) 2. From the ‘Add Effect’ menu select ‘Motion paths’. Select Draw Custom Path.

1. Follow step 1 from the previous page.

3. Pick a tool to draw your motion path. 4. Now draw the path the object will move along.

5. The object will now move along that path when the slide is played.
