Starting out with PowerPoint 2003

2. Drop down menus for custom animations and text formatting tool bars can be found here.

1. To add a new page click ‘New Slide’. Then choose the layout for your page, for a blank page choose the ‘Blank’ layout.

3. This is where you can navigate each slide of your project by clicking on each slide.

4. The bottom tool bar contains drawing tools, colour options and text box tools.

Adding text to a page & formatting 2. Text can be formatted from using the text tool bar. Select the text first in the text box and then change font, size and colour from here. 1. Click the text box tool and click and size a text box on your page. Click inside the box to type. The text box can also be resized, moved and rotated afterwards.

3. To format the text box right click the box and select ‘Format Text Box.

4. From the Format Text Box options you can colour fill the box or create a boarder around the box.

Changing the Background Colour

1. To change the background colour or use fill effects right click the slide and click ‘Background’ on the menu.

3. After the selection has been made you can apply the colour to the current slide or apply the colour to all slides.

2. From the ‘Background’ window click the drop down menu and pick a colour or click ‘More Colours’/Fill Effects for a wider selection.

How to insert Pictures from File and Clip Art

1. To insert an image from your personal files click the drop down menu ‘Insert’ then the slide out menu ‘Picture’ and then ‘From file’.

2. The ‘Insert Picture’ window will open and from here find and select your saved picture file. Once selected click ‘Insert’.

3. To insert pictures by Clip Art go to the ‘Picture’ menu but this time click ‘Clip Art’ A Clip Art search bar will appear to the right.

4. Use a search term and then click ‘Go’ and relevant clip art will appear below. Once you have found an image drag and drop onto the page.

Creating hyperlinks between pages

1. Select and right click the object or text which you wish to be the hyperlink button.

2. Click ‘Hyperlink’ from the right click menu.

3. The ‘Insert Hyperlink window will open. Click the ‘Place in this Document’ button.

4. Click the slide you wish to hyperlink to from here. Then Click ‘OK’.

Linking pages using Action Buttons

1. To use the action buttons click ‘AutoShapes’ and then ‘Action Buttons’ from the pop up menu.

4. After the button is drawn the ‘Action Settings’ box will appear and from here select where you wish the button to link to from the ‘Hyperlink to’ drop down menu. Then click ‘OK’.

2. Then select and click the button you wish to use.

3. Your cursor will turn into a drawing tool, using this click and drag to draw your action button.

Slide transitions

1. Side Transitions control the way a side moves from one to another. Click the ‘Slide Show’ drop down menu and click ‘Slide Transition’.

2. The ‘Slide Transition’ menu will appear to the right and from here different types of transitions can be selected. You can also alter the speed or the transition and add an accompanying sound.

Important! If you are using hyperlinks to navigate your slides, disable the advance slide on mouse click option.

Recording your own sounds and linking them to objects or text

1. Select the ‘Insert’ drop down menu then ‘Movies and Sound’ and then click ‘Record Sound’.

2. The ‘Record Sound’ window will now appear. Type a name for the sound then click the record button (red circle). When finished press stop (black rectangle) and then click ‘OK’. A speaker symbol will appear on the page.

3. To link a recorded sound to an object right click the object or text and click ‘Action Settings’.

4. From the ‘Action Settings’ window click either ‘Mouse Click’ or ‘Mouse Over’ and tick ‘Play Sound’ and select the named sound from the drop down menu. Then Click ‘OK’.

Inserting sounds from file and linking them to objects or text 1. Right click the object you wish to link the sound to and Click on ‘Action Settings’.

2. The ‘Action Settings’ window will appear, now click ‘Play Sound’ and use the drop down menu to find and click ‘Other sound’.

3. The ‘Add Sound’ window will appear and from here you can find and select the sound you wish to insert. Then click ‘OK’

Inserting sounds from file 5. Click on ‘Edit Sound Object’ and the ‘Sound Options’ window appears, from here the sound can be looped and the symbol hidden during the slide show.

1. Click ‘Insert’ from the drop down menu, click ‘Movies and Sounds’ and then click ‘Sound from File’.

2. The ‘Insert Sound’ window will appear and from here you can find and select the sound you wish to insert. Then click ‘OK’ 3. You will now be asked whether you want your sound to play automatically or when clicked on the page.

4. Once the sound is inserted a speaker symbol will appear. Right click the speaker for further options.

Adding animation – Part 1

3. Animations can be added from the ‘Add Effect’ drop down menu.

1. To create animations click the ‘Slide Show’ drop down menu then click ‘Custom Animation’.

2. The ‘Custom Animation’ side bar will now open. You will now need to select an object to animate from the page.

4. Once the animation is created you can you can tailor and change the timing and speed from here.

Adding animation – Part 2 (motion paths) 1. Follow steps 1 to 3 from the previous page.

2. From the ‘Add Effect’ menu select ‘Motion paths’. Select Draw Custom Path.

4. Now draw the path the object will move along.

3. Pick a tool to draw your motion path.
