FROM THE

Editor’s TABLE have always loved weddings for the sheer energy and enthusiasm that entails the beginning of togetherness. Weddings were a stream of parties with great food, hours of dancing, socialising with friends and relatives and of course looking your best at every event. Five years ago, when I got involved in ICWF in Goa, I got to see the business aspects of weddings. I saw weddings from the perspectives of wedding planners, decorators, photographers, venue owners, make-up artists, and others for whom a wedding was a business opportunity. As I developed closer relations with these dynamic entrepreneurs I began to appreciate the business of weddings. I began to understand their challenges and problems. I also learnt to experience their joys of executing the perfect wedding for the most demanding clients. Having interacted with hundreds of entrepreneurs over the last five editions of ICWF, I feel that I am integral part of the wedding fraternity. The “Business of Weddings” is becoming increasingly complex and competitive. To generate attractive returns on investments and efforts, every business will need to focus on embracing innovation, enhancing creativity, exploring strategic co-operations, and energising marketing. Businesses that fail to incorporate these objectives in their business strategies will find it difficult to satisfy customers who are seeking “integrated experience solutions” rather than “disjoint wedding services”. Over the last six years, the International Convention of Wedding Fraternity (ICWF) has emerged as India’s premier and most respected forum in the wedding industry. Earlier this year, ICWF travelled to Istanbul to mark its first international edition. Several entrepreneurs have successfully launched their businesses by using ICWF as the perfect networking and marketing platform. Others have witnessed unparalleled spikes in the growth of their businesses by incorporating the creative ideas and innovative insights shared by some of the most acclaimed and admired professionals through

focused talks and panel discussions. Informal discussions amongst participants over social networking hours during the conference have resulted in scores of mutually beneficial strategic tie-ups and emergence of new business models. Even though, the convention lasts for three days, its impact continues for a much longer time. ICWF has always strived to evolve every year and provide more value for all participants. ICWF: The Business of Weddings is yet another effort to further elongate the impact of the convention and help you to grow your businesses. We work very hard each year to identify the most distinguished speakers who can share with participants their vision, innovative ideas, creative thought, marketing strategies and outlooks of the future of the industry. Sometimes because of scheduling constraints we are unable to present these experts during the convention. As you turn the pages of this book, you will be delighted to discover insightful articles written by these gurus exclusively for the participants of ICWF. We hope that the gains you make from these contributions will benefit your businesses. When designing the agenda of the convention, we make every effort to include issues and topics that majority of the audience will find useful. This forces us to sometimes skip on important micro-level topics dealing with specific aspects of weddings. In this inaugural issue, we have included articles that present the latest developments on some of these aspects. Anyone involved in planning destination weddings will understand the costs and efforts required to explore new exotic locations and figuring out the logistics associated with those locations. This year, our special feature provides an indepth and comprehensive analysis of Thailand as a wedding destination. We have explored different locations and provided extensive information on hotels in Thailand. As you flip through the first edition of this publication, you will find valuable insights and information that you can use to grow your business. Please do share your valuable feedback to help us improve the future editions and make them more beneficial. I wish you all the success in the upcoming wedding season. SIMI BANGA 9

DESIGNLAB EXPERIENCE

In a world that’s seen it all before, how do you create an event that is guaranteed to impress? From forging the perfect team and taking calculated risks to building fruitful relationships and pushing the boundaries of imagination, events company DesignLab Experience shares the story of its journey to the top. 18

F E AT U R E

DesignLab Experience Managing Partners, Hibah Albakree and Mootassem Elbaba joined forces eight years ago on an event in Abu Dhabi for around 1000 people. This was where they saw the power of merging their talents in design and execution. “Our energies were in sync, our visions were aligned,” say Hibah and Mootassem. “The events industry is all about imagination; having a specific dream and making sure that dream comes true. It’s important for us to achieve that same dream with our client - this is how we interpret the client’s vision and translate that into the design of their event,” advised the team. This is where the strengths of their third partner, Marwan Maalouf, came in. “He is a master in translating ideas onto a screen.”. As lead Architect, Marwan’s high architectural skills provide the link between concept and reality. “It was the symbiotic flow of our thinking that inspired us to unite our strengths and push forward together,” says Mootassem. First they began pitching together, then they started designing together. By their third project the decision was made to join forces and the trio became one unstoppable unit. DesignLab Experience now specialises in producing multilayered, immersive environments. They have offices in Dubai and Beirut, and work with a team of experts in research, design, architecture, lighting, and project management. GROWING A NICHE Of their progress in the industry, the team says that their deliverables have grown exponentially. Every project has become more ambitious and with this, their expectations and needs have changed. The treatment of the space has since evolved and DesignLab Experience has evolved with it. “We define environments through the design and curation of art installations, which transform existing spaces into emotional and engaging journeys,” says the team. 19

From a results perspective, DesignLab Experience is proud to say that their events have never been met with negative feedback. On the contrary, they find that the majority of their clients tell them that what they deliver is above and beyond what was expected. Naturally, the team provides plans, renders and visuals throughout the process to confirm that everyone is on the same page, however there is still a small part of their vision that remains a hidden world until the project comes to fruition. The greatest challenge is ensuring that this world is the same in everyone’s mind and is then translated into the final product with cohesion. Their unified collaboration with clients is replicated in the relationships the team forms with its suppliers. “We treat suppliers as we want to be treated,” advise the founders. This philosophy is very much a 20

part of DesignLab Experience DNA. “We focus on integrity and ethics when creating our relationships,” they say. “The ability to afford a certain product from a supplier is variable, but creating a relationship where that supplier goes above and beyond to find you the quantities you want, to create customised items for you, or to assist you in meeting your deadline – that’s invaluable. There have been so many occasions where we’ve needed our suppliers to go the extra mile and they have been willing to support wherever they can. They

might give us a credit line for example, and they’re always ready to exceed the status quo. This is because we’ve always been very clear about how we need them to work with us.” It’s this dynamic with suppliers - as well as their efficient project management and system for tracking the work of contractors - that gives DesignLab Experience a strong track record of delivering projects on time, and for delivering 95 per cent of them on or under budget. One such example occurred in 2014 when a client called to deliver an extremely tight brief: they needed an event for 2200 people in Abu Dhabi designed and executed within eight weeks. The DesignLab Experience team had five days to make this happen. Not only did they need to fly people in from Lebanon to begin production on site, they had to action this while the

client was still in the process of confirming whether or not the project would go ahead. The team was working on good faith and had the difficult task of asking suppliers and staff to do the same. The primary challenge was lack of time. They were also missing a unit in place to work on the production. Thinking on their feet, they decided to call on the team in Lebanon, requesting anyone willing to relocate to the UAE for seven weeks in order to make the project a reality. The result had to be spectacular, despite the tight deadline. Beyond performing staffing miracles, they also needed to contact suppliers for their support in providing the infrastructure, everything from lighting to sound. MEMORABLE PROJECTS “Everybody was on one page,” advise the team, “and willing to do everything possible to make this project happen and deliver it on deadline.” The resulting event was a magnificent success, delivered on time and exceeding the client’s expectations. Moreover, it would become one of DesignLab’s definitive events,

24

which led to a slew of new project requests for the business. “In terms of defining our offering, it was one of the best projects we’ve ever undertaken,” they say. Looking to the future, DesignLab Experience aims to expand its offering to encompass a different kind of clientele, namely the government. An organisation that has traditionally taken a more corporate approach to events, DesignLab Experience believes that its unique experiential offering is just what it needs to shake things up. “We aim to create memorable projects,” say Hibah and Mootassem. “We find that governments are seeking that wow factor in their upcoming projects; they want events that leave a more lasting and impactful impression.” Explaining the rise in demand for their experiential events, the team says: “People today have changed. They have a shorter attention span and they’ve already seen it all online. A basic event is not enough anymore. That’s why we always go over and above to add an extra layer of interest and surprise.”

POINTS TO PONDER

Higher accuracy in planning -

The key operative word here is planning. Management follows but planning always takes a lead. It’s imperative for the client to understand that last minute changes and delayed decisionmaking can be detrimental to the event.

More clarity in communications with local creative partners and vendorsClarity with all teams involved is a prerequisite. This clear understanding makes for better-delivered product.

More accurate & prompt guest arrivalsIST at times is not the realistic time. Arrival time is not given

due, hence guests arrive late and the planned timeline of the event goes for a complete toss-up.

SecurityAny procedures upon entryone can walk in, even at private events, as there are no apt safety measures taken to ensure a secure environment. One must preempt that any untoward incident can ruin the whole event & reputation of the family as well.

Choosing quality over quantity“LESS IS MORE”- Good event designs are based on the

fundamental acceptance that less is truly more. Why do we have to do 12 events in 3 days? Make it easy for the guests— don’t over stretch. BREATHE & LET OTHERS ALSO BREATHE.

Less unannounced guests without RSVP – This wobbles the entire dynamics of a great event. Everyone

works with little contingency, but too much variation at the last minute can turn the event upside down.

Tighten schedule of events to be in line with production schedule – Space out events well, don’t do too many back-to-back events. Plan your teams well as back-to-back turnaround for events can be very stressful and usually hinders the overall output of all events.

Bigger dedicated production team for different design elementsWell laid out production plans, dedicated teams to oversee

production and implementation is a key for flawless execution.

Bigger budget-

Expectations vs. Reality is sometimes unrealistic- The ultimate outcome of any event is in accordance to what the client has spent. The client needs to understand that and respect that rather than always expecting a more for less. 27

WEDDINGS IN THE EYES OF GEN Z/CENTENNIALS (BORN 1996 OR LATER)

Indian weddings until sometime ago would generally mean a series of festivities happening at the Groom & Bride’s side (or together) in a fairly large set up like a bollywood film. Glitz, Glamour and Grandeur were 3 words used to describe Indian Weddings but not anymore. While some couples still dream and plan their fairytale wedding we see the shift happening towards a subtler version. Based on the excerpts from the testimonials from Gen Z, the way Indian Weddings are perceived is witnessing a shift. This article is specially created for ICWF Annual issue 2018 by wedwise.co.in

GINNY KOHLI FOUNDER, WEDWISE

TAKE ON THE BIG FAT INDIAN WEDDING BY GEN Z As much as the Big Fat Indian Wedding looks good on the big screen, the new Generation doesn’t seem all that impressed with the opulence. “ I would prefer to host a wedding that is attended only by the close-friends and family. Actually I would love to get an intimate Destination wedding rather than a larger-than-life destination”. Says Rohit, a 22 year old student of Amity University. “My elder sister got married in a long 5-day celebration in what you can call a typical Yash Chopra wedding. Did I enjoy it? Yes absolutely. Would I go for something similar? Not really! As much fun as it was, I did not relate to the need for such exorbitant expenses”. Says Tanisha, a 20 year old architecture student. This seems to be a general trend amongst a majority of youngsters. Even though they have some really tasteful 33

Just as the centennials have set their minds away from the same old big indian wedding 16 year old priya from dubai seconds the idea “i would surely opt for a close knit wedding at some amazing destination..Wedding could turn out to be a vacation as well.

preferences for venues and destinations, they’re dissing the idea of a typical big fat Indian wedding! There is definitely a shift from opulence to class and sophistication. More and More Youngsters seem sold for the idea of destination wedding. Just as the Centennials have set their minds away from the same old Big Indian Wedding 16 year old Priya from Dubai seconds the idea “I would surely opt for a close knit wedding at some amazing destination..wedding could turn out to be a vacation as well.”

34

DESTINATION WEDDING OR A WEDDING IN YOUR OWN CITY? A lot of us would plan elaborate events and details around the functions related toweddings, which could easily be around 3-7 days, but nowadays couples seem to steer clear from this concept. “Instead of having an elaborate affair with events spanning from 2- 4 functions, I’d have just sangeet and wedding, these 2 functions are most important I feel” adds Kavitha a to-be-bride from Bangalore.

GUEST COLUMN

There seems to be a rising trend of Staycation Weddings too. An interesting mix of a Destination Wedding and a home-town wedding. “Why fly down to a 5-star hotel in a different city when there are plethora of options within your own city? We can simply cut down on major travel expenses if we host a destination wedding within our own city”. Say Akasha & Shivan, a young entrepreneur couple planning to get married in 2020. GROWING TREND SERVICES/VENDORS AT A WEDDING FOR THE NEW GEN Some may focus more on food, some spend great bucks on decor. It’s all about how a couple envisions their wedding. There are star elements that add up to a great wedding and food and music tops the list. Jazz music cocktails, percussionists for mehendis, catering from their favourite food joints for smaller functions, food trucks for late nights partying, are concepts trending the list for most favoured professionals for the service . A refreshing change in trends is witnessed as more and more youngsters are becoming aware of the need to hire professional planners. “Time equals money. I think a good wedding planner could save both” says Akriti, a 26 year old bride-to-be from Mumbai. As a consequence of the Social Media surge, the millennials are now more interested in making their wedding a social frenzy. Be it the brain-storming sessions for deciding the wedding hashtag or incorporation of social media friendly photo booths, the attention to Social Media friendliness of a wedding is increasingly becoming popular. All in all, the Generation Z is more open to ideas, more open to professional help and more practical when it comes to wedding celebrations. Not only that, they have developed very tasteful preferences when it comes to Wedding decor, destinations, venues and even the at-venue entertainment. Their choices are not deterrent to the budgets which themselves are very carefully penned down. They are becoming more and more capable of working out things on their own and at the same time, being considerate about the expectations of their parents. They appreciate practicality of events and the buzz around it. Their notion of weddings is not limited to just opulence and glam show rather they prefer to put in focus the sentiments of union of two people in love and the genuine celebration around it in the presence of those who really matter.

As a consequence of the Social Media surge, the millennials are now more interested in making their wedding a social frenzy. Be it the brain-storming sessions for deciding the wedding hashtag or incorporation of social media friendly photo booth.

WHAT THE LUXURY INDUSTRY NEEDS TO DO TO PROVIDE MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES FOR CLIENTS.

COLIN COWIE FOUNDER AND CEO C O L I N C O W I E L I F E S T Y L E

In the service industry today, intense competition has created a market saturated with professionals willing to utilize every trick in the book to stay afloat or set themselves apart from the rest. In the service industry today, intense competition has created a market saturated with professionals willing to utilize every trick in the book to stay afloat or set themselves apart from the rest. Increasingly, their efforts are focused on how to create a meaningful experience for the customer. For me, a meaningful experience is achieved through a fine-tuned approach to customer service. In the words of my friend, author and motivational speaker Simon T. Bailey, efforts need to be all about “customer love.” It’s very much about delivering the right service, in appropriate 38

amounts, at the right time for the customer. Basic customer service is no longer enough. However, there is an extremely fine line between service that makes you comfortable and service that is so overprescribed that it becomes invasive. You don’t have to try that hard to make someone welcome. It almost seems as if the general manager of a hotel or resort has gone to all the competition, gathered every possible service protocol and then over-enlisted them into his or her own service procedures and manuals. I’ve always said that a great style comes from ruthless editing, from the ability to figure out what is right and wrong and how to engage the guest in a meaningful and sincere manner. A perfect example of what not to do is an experience I recently had while

F E AT U R E

spending time at a high-end spa in a wellknown five-star hotel on the Mexican Riviera. I arrived at the spa and immediately noted the attentiveness of the staff. However, as the minutes and hours passed, I was approached 20-plus times by staff asking, “How are you Mr. Cowie?” “Can I get you anything, Mr. Cowie?” “Are you enjoying yourself, Mr. Cowie?” The attention bordered the line of incessancy enough that what should have been a sanctuary became an intrusion into my Zen space. The spa experience itself was eclipsed by the constant interruption, and I felt as though my personal space was being invaded. I wasn’t going to say anything until a spa attendant got onto all fours in an

attempt to put my slippers on me. That was enough. The takeaway here is that sometimes, less is indeed more. It’s all about finding the right balance. The proactive service industry needs to take it down a notch and place value on understanding how to provide a memorable and non-automated client experience. What I’m experiencing is service providers that are “training” their employees, rather than educating them. You do not train employees. Training is meant for tactical people in the military and for dogs. When people are customer-facing, we need to educate them, teach them how to read customers and give them the skillset and

DOWN

tools that, when combined with common sense, will allow them to invoke the right service gestures. This is not an easy task, and that’s why so few service providers get it right. They train people to deal with given situations versus complex situations that require the service provider to stop and think, and then figure out the intelligent way to react. As service is definitely the differentiator, it’s easy to make the mistake of trying too hard. Exemplary service is about finding that fine red line and knowing how and when to stay behind it. Put simply: We have to dial it down and select the appropriate service delivery to ensure the right, meaningful experience.

TIPS ON CURATING A GREAT FLORAL ARRANGEMENT

Design from a concept towards detailing, not the other way around!! To have ‘a story’ helps. Communicate a story starting from color, next comes different forms and last is the variety of flowers.

TIPS Before anyone starts to design, there are fundamental questions that one should get engaged with? Ask yourself the design is for Who, Why is it being created, When will it be used, What is the reason/occasion, Where your design shall be used and How your design will be used? By answering those questions you’ll avoid unneeded stress and you’ll get clarity of thought to structure the best design. This will enable you in making logical decisions and in taking appropriate actions to complete the job.

TOMAS DE BRUYNE DIRECTOR & FOUNDER TOMAS DE BRUYNE FLORAL EXPERIENCES WORLDWIDE

Communicate a story with flowers as your medium - Know your flowers well as they are the best to express as they have immense emotional strengths. A flower is a language of emotions & should be well used to express any emotion. Be aware of trends but not follow them to the T, be inspired by them. Adapt them in your client’s story. Keep challenging yourself! The creative mind & juices have to be pushed continuously beyond boundaries in order to deliver the best product.

45

F E AT U R E

Educate yourself; learn from the best! The cost of education is much smaller than the cost of ‘trial and error’! Creating a story board (mood and color boards) surely helps to communicate with the client, your staff, sub contractors and last but not the least your own self. It helps in eliminating that’s not needed and consolidating stuff that is important in shaping a design.

TIPS ON CURATING & HANDLING OF FLOWERS: Care and handling of cut flowers One of the most common causes of wilting in cut flowers and foliage is the presence of an air-lock in the stem. The air-lock usually forms as the flower is cut, when atmospheric pressure forces air into the water ducts of the stem in which there is normally a partial vacuum. It is virtually impossible to prevent the ends of dry-packed flowers and foliage from drying out during transit from the grower to the wholesaler, and from the wholesaler to the Florist. All plant material should be unpacked as soon as possible after buying from the grower or wholesaler, and any plastic sleeves and elastic bands should be removed. Care and handling of plants: If you are cutting flowers and foliage from the garden, the best time for cutting is early morning, or late evening. This is the time when flowers have the maximum amount of water in their stems, and they will condition more readily. Cutting them during the heat of the day allows the material to wilt much quicker.

47

GENERAL TIPS CARE AND HANDLING: Before using the flowers, best to let them drink at the minimum for 3 to 4 hours. Whether flowers are bought from a grower or wholesaler, or picked from the garden, all lower leaves should be removed from each stem, as if any leaves are left under water when conditioning will quickly begin to rot and cause a build-up of bacteria which will clog the stem ends, preventing the uptake of water, as well as causing the water to smell foul. Plant material should be conditioned according to its stem type, and conditioning varies with different stem types. Very new growth, such as spring foliage, should not be used, as it is very difficult to condition, and it does not last well. Always add flower food into the water for a longer life spam, intense color and firmer stability.

2018 THE BUSINESS OF WEDDING

THE LANDSCAPE

When I got into the business of weddings in the year 2000, it was still considered to be a business of tent walas and halwais. Most of the event management companies used to look down upon wedding events considering them to be below a respectable level of eminence. But today the whole scenario has changed and the business of weddings sits on top of the highland and accounts for the largest chunk of the events business across the country. And it would not be out of place to mention that even the positioning of a wedding planner has moved significant rungs on the charts of respectability. It is now a market place that has been prudently studied by most of the Big 4’s and leading business organisations like FICCI, CII et al. It is now a business, which is generating reports of significant influence and unimaginable mathematics.

mi s d n d c We o o 54

I N D U S T R Y TA L K

DID WE KNOW ? Currently the Indian wedding industry is over Rs 180,00,000 crore across all domains of expenses including Gold, Jewelry, Apparels, White Goods, Hotel related expenses, Banqueting, Events, Food and Beverages, Decorations, Travel etc.

THE SIMPLE SCIENCE OF NUMBERS The country has a population of around 1.25 billion and considering an average family with five members, there are around 250 million families in India. With about one marriage per family every 20 years, the country averages roughly 10 million weddings every year. Even if 0.25 percent of this business is handled by the organized sector in terms of events (being very conservative) – it comes to about 25000 weddings per year. Sounds pretty reasonable; doesn’t it? Even if the average spend is 100 lacs per wedding all across – we are talking of 25000 crore worth of business across the organized sector today in terms of events and related supplies. And considering the growth of 20 to 25 percent already exhibited in the past few years, we are talking of this spend increasing by at least 5000 crore on a year on year basis.

WHAT TO EXPECT ? It is also expected, the per capita income will be tripled in a couple of decades and the per capita consumption of gold during weddings or other wise will increase. With half of India’s population being under 29 years of age, the marriage market is set to boom like never before over the next five to ten years. The young generation – more exposed, more enthusiastic, more ambitious & more demanding – will furthermore change the dynamics and expanse of how weddings will happen. It is time for us to get ready – for the Giant Leap which will catapult this market to a 2.5 to 3 times multiplier in the next 5 to 7 years. I must also share that the numbers are purely my estimates and I don’t want to be taken to courts in case of any discrepancies found. Thus, please believe at your own risk. The story of INDIA – is starting now and lets all become a part of this lovely epic to be written.

SPACE TRANSFORMATION, FLOWY DESIGNS MIXED WITH EASTERN AND WESTERN ROOTS, FEMININE FLORAL ARTISTRY, AND UNBREAKABLE BONDS AT THE KAREN TRAN MASTERCLASS Of all the remarkable designs Karen has created and the high-end spaces she’s transformed, some of her most favorite transformations occur inside her own masterclass. In this one-ofa-kind, immersive experience, talented students for all corners of the globe practiced and developed newly learned techniques and test their skills under the attentive eye of one of the world’s most renowned floral experts. In this set apart space, hosted in the most luxurious venues around the globe, industry leaders brim with inspiration surrounded by breathtaking scenery. They experience divine

culinary delights, forge new friendships, and “rub shoulders” with Karen herself, knowing they are exponentially upleveling their skills, businesses, and careers. From sipping cocktails over sunset ocean views or laughing over delicious gala dinners with peers, Karen shows her students a good time, so they return to their lives and their businesses refreshed, restored, and re-inspired. Take a peek at three of the more than 30 countries where Karen has hosted her floral masterclass and the inner and outer transformations she’s helped her students bring to life. The Floral Experience in Costa Rica This majestic tropical country with its bright green rainforests and sandy coastlines provided all the inspiration Karen needed to create a paradise-esque masterclass. Hosted at the luxe Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort in Guanacaste, Costa Rica with its pristine sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and beautiful mountain views, luxury was infused in every detail of the experience. Using the local tropical elements available in Costa Rica, Karen used bright and colorful foliage to create a vibrant floral backdrop. 60

Floral and fauna adorned the tabletop and leave textured linens added a natural yet elegant touch. Brightly printed menus enhanced the tropical, playful aesthetic and an abundance of striking floral pieces towered over the tables, making it as if guests were in their own regal rainforest. An abundance of tropical foliages and colorful blooms set a beautiful Flower wall backdrop for the guests to post for photos while they celebrated on the lawn overlooking the sea. Imported roses from Ecuador were delicately placed and stunning rose bushes and teepees greeted guests. Every colorful creation boasted glimpses of paradise and Karen’s signature feminine style that her clients adore and students identify with. The Floral Experience in Italy Hosted at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, a breath taking hotel in Sorrento, Italy, charm and romance flows from every room as the hotel embraces a dolce vita flair. Full of character and a historic richness, the venue itself provides remarkable inspiration that allows Karen to lead her students on the journey of creating a classical romantic affair. In quintessential Italy, nestled near the Gulf of Naples, Karen created over-the-top romantic designs rich in whimsy, liveliness, and feminine appeal.

Breath taking frescos covered the entire ceiling to create a dramatically romantic ambiance. The shape of the rose tunnel accentuated and enhanced the natural curve and shape of the room, leaving nothing left to be desired. Striking candelabras lined the entrance to a magnificent bed of roses one would expect to see in a fairy tale. Guests were whisked away into their own fairy tale of sorts as they were able to pose for pictures on the bed and imagine all things beautiful and lovely. Beautiful soft colored roses, tulips, hydrangeas, calla lilies, & orchids created an extravagant statement centerpieces that towered above the gold edged table & miniature yet darling table pieces. 62

The Floral Experience Thailand Perched over the Bay of Phuket, The Floral Experience Thailand was hosted at the Anantara Layan Phuket Resort—a world of privilege. Tucked away in a tranquil cove that overlooks the Andaman Sea, students walked on powdery beaches and tucked into their luxury pool villas to recharge and re-inspire their design journey alongside Karen. This masterclass, which was filled to the brim with every feature of a Karen Tran Masterclass, was all about creating an elegant and pure design aesthetic. Inspired by a vision of “East meets West,” Karen showed attendees how to take Western design and add a touch

of Thai to create subtly eclectic yet cohesive designs that still look and feel lush, flowy, and feminine. The gorgeous tunnel of white flowers offered the most jawdropping, grand entrance. Guests walked in awe through the pristine white tunnel lined with white orchids from Thailand. Since the beginning of time, white has been known to invoke feelings of purity, love, goodness, and innocence. It’s a classic and timeless color that creates a positive and light ambiance that illuminates any space, and Karen used this color in abundance to create the vision she had in her mind and the look and feel she was going for. Dubbed “an experience of a lifetime,” at each 3-day intensive

masterclass, attendees get significant hands-on experience and learn how to create a signature wedding style for today’s luxury market. From gala dinners to live music, they not only design an exquisite event, but get to partake in every element of the luxurious, high-end experience Karen teaches them to create. Students leave wowed, stretched, invigorated, better connected to peers and industry leaders, and on course to be a more influential and sought-after designer. Once again, Karen has outdone herself with the perfect mix of luxury, learning, and leisure, making the floral masterclass industry one more space she’s transformed with her exquisite talent, signature style, and over-the-top vision. 63

In 2015, the Certified American Grown program launched the Field to Vase Dinner Tour with a mission of educating the public on the importance of buying American-grown flowers. The tour has continued to raise awareness for American flower farmers by inviting guests to partake in meaningful dining experiences in flower fields and greenhouses across the country. This past September, David Beahm of David Beahm Experiences played host at his recently purchased flower farm in

Quakertown. Beahm has created countless events for celebrity clients, and, in May 2016, designed the flowers for Michelle Obama’s First Ladies Luncheon. THE BUSINESS OF WEDDING

“You know my technique of creating the ‘List of Favourite Things’…” says scenographer extraordinaire, Sumant Jayakrishnan pointedly as I probe him to tell me how the idea was conceived. “It was a mix of things that ‘he’ and ‘she’ liked!” We are talking about the immensely fascinating, exceedingly intriguing and acutely astounding evening that was created for an illustrious New Delhi couple’s dazzling winter wedding. Located in a swanky farmhouse on the outskirts of the city, the event seemed to be more like an intensive transgression from reality to a spirited, vigorous and vivid adventure into the ‘Roaring Twenties’, almost reminiscent of a protracted yet endearing experience of profound intoxication. Bringing together the exotic preferences of a jewellery 82

designer with those of her betrothed, Jayakrishnan built a 40,000 sq.ft. palatial structure, inspired heavily by the pastiche of varying design styles, reflecting distinctly on the age of elaborate Art Deco, opulent imagery, and of course sultry Jazz. As the iron gates parted, one was faced with an enormous Classical mansion across the 20,000 sq.ft driveway. Printed onto stretched fabric, the meticulously detailed architectural sketch would have

fooled the most venerated expert that it was a three dimensional façade, rather than merely a rasterized image. Jayakrishnan, who is known to pick his battles and prioritise the importance of the smallest element in his works, had strategically played the foolery here. Through the doors, one stepped onto the balcony of a darkened library that cradled a sunken courtyard within. Sitting pristine in the carved hollow was a gargantuan. Fabergé egg, painted in dainty florals and embellished in the fineries of gold. A set of grand staircases further led into the main hall, but not before embracing an impressive dance-floor encircled with a glistening sheet of quivering water. Dancers clad in feather and frock gyrated to the

F E AT U R E

resonating rhythm, welcoming esteemed guests and setting the mood for an unforgettable affair. The main hall, pinned in the middle with an elongated bar mimicking a royal casino was adorned with a towering stack of giant playing cards. Jayakrishnan, assisted by Harsidddh Sonara and Aman Garg took the groom’s love for gambling and intrinsic

attraction to the glitz and glamour of playing the odds, to assemble for them an array of incredulous chandeliers that hung amidst a field of dazzling metallic bulbs. A series of columns stood guard along one edge of the main space, securing behind them casual lounge type seating. Gigantic art deco doors swiveled open to reveal a wall studded with fringed lamps, forming a dramatic backdrop for more performers. The guests were spoilt for choice as to where they could spend their time – at the Whiskey Bar or Cigar Lounge in the Library, around the casino or the casual seating, yet all eyes were peeled towards a stepped stage at the far end. above, only to be raised into the heightened volume to pave way for impressive performances. While the glittering crowd jived to Benny Dayal’s beats, high powered fixtures studded to the ceiling and corners of the stage created a fierce network of colourful beams that oscillated across the volume in an enigmatic show of drama; Lloyd Albuqurque’s lighting scheme relishing the thumping bass. Heading towards the dining space, the ambience transformed from theatric revelry to a ceremonious courtliness. Entrenched in changing hues of vibrant light, the lengthened tables were garnished with rows of tea-lights and pairs of delightful flamingo sculptures, draped in exquisite flowers. carefully thought-through and detailed by a relentless team that worked for a month to plan the design and executed this mammoth task within 10 days at site. I am aghast at what was achieved and the timeframe in which it was assembled. From the construction of the superstructure to the selection of table linen, from the form of the elaborate chandeliers to the geometric patterns on the doors, Jayakrishnan conceived not only the sets and scenography but choreographed an enthralling experience through the space, through the evening.

The intricacies of the laboriously curated palette of material, colour, texture and aesthetics of this 1920’s inspired, Great Gatsby-esque event might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it most definitely was this particular couple’s flute of champagne. Intoxicated in the ambience and drugged by its spirit, the guests caroused in celebration till the wee hours of the morning; and Jayakrishnan was not one to give into wreaking fatigue, instead roistered in his extravagant creation for the 12 hours that this dream-like feat prevailed. 89

WHAT DO YOUNGSTERS THINK OF

party

GINNY KOHLI F o u n d e r, We d w i s e

Bachelor’s/Bachelorette’s parties have now been a part of the wedding culture of India for quite some time. Varying in scale with the varying socio-economic credentials. For some, these parties may just mean a nightclub outing, for some, these may mean a full-fledged party and maybe even a vacation with closefriends. But now, there is a rising trend of Youngster’ Parties. This article is specially created for ICWF Annual issue 2018 by wedwise.co.in 94

VOICE OF CLIENT

Does this mean no more adult cakes and getting crazy? Well, this may be the case considering both the bride-to-be and the groom-to-be share the stage at a typical youngsters’ party and most of the times, such a party is hosted to mark the beginning of the whole wedding fiesta. Our 2 cents on the matter? If you were a person who has 500 unread WhatsApp messages everyday, a destination Youngster’s Party would leave a lot of your contacts and friends disappointed. Whereas, if you can count your friends on your fingers, go ahead and plan a party at a nice exotic destination location like Phuket or Bali, which are also the dream choices of Chaitali who has 10 close friends who have come together and planned a private destination Youngster’s vacation. Earlier Bachelor party was an event where the groom’s friends celebrate the day of his singledom and go all out with crazy adventures to make the night memorable for him but now couples have different aspirations when it comes to Youngsterparties. The concept of Youngsters is picking up as couples are now kickstarting their wedding celebrations with this event with their close friends à la Hangover movie (and sometimes family members too). People are comfortable to spend those extra bucks to make their youngsters a success, be it hosting the event at an upbeat destination or incorporating exciting elements into the party. 95

Youngsters is an event that is synonymous with adrenaline rush and crazy moments with your cool gang. So it is important to choose a destination that exudes the same vibe. Las vegas, Miami, Thailand, Bangkok, Ibiza are the hottest destinations for all party rockers As much as the idea of a large scale youngsters party sounds good, there is however difference of opinion when it comes to the duration of youngsters. Most people look at an event spanning from 2-4 day trip but some tend to plan a week long trip for their youngsters. Afterall, the wedding celebration ought to start with a bang! TRENDING DESTINATIONS FOR YOUNGSTERS Youngsters is an event that is synonymous with adrenaline rush and

crazy moments with your cool gang. So it is important to choose a destination that exudes the same vibe. Las vegas, Miami, Thailand, Bangkok, Ibiza are the hottest destinations for all party rockers whereas Barcelona, Mexico and Amsterdam are sought after destinations for the adventurer souls. Closer home, Delhi itself has a host of lavish venues for all types of budgets. Properties like the Roseate, The Leela & Andaz have some of the hottest venues in Delhi that could host your dream Youngster’s Bash. A DESTINATION AFFAIR OR A PARTY IN YOUR OWN CITY “If my partner is sold for the idea of a Youngster’s Party, I’d definitely want to have it within the city in which we’ve planned our Wedding”, says Aayan, a 28 year-old social media professional who believes that a Youngster’s Party should be a grand affair and it should be hosted just before the wedding festivities begin. “I’d prefer my youngsters to be at a destination as anyway the wedding functions would be in the city” says Rohan, a 30-year old hotelier from Gurgaon. Sameera, a 25 yr old bride from Delhi believes that it makes sense to host a Youngster’s Party within the city. Because of her vast network, and a huge friend circle, she thinks it would only make sense to host a grand youngster’s party to host at a venue that could be accessible to a majority of the guest list.

NO BUCKS GIVEN BY THIS GENERATION! Money does play an important role in planning wedding functions but Bachelors seem to get a fair share of the budget as well. “Budgets are important, but I think we can go a little overboard considering that’s probably the last singles party I’d attend before my wedding” a valid point put forth from most grooms these days. The only area where the young couples are trying to save some bucks is the hiring of planners for a youngster’s/bachelor party, which seems like a non-preferred choice as the notion is stuck that planners are for wedding planning. Aseem- a young Engineer working in Noida shares, “I guess I’d take some help of my friends to plan it. but I don’t think I’d hire a professional planner to plan my bachelors.. it is ok to hire them for wedding though.” AN ENCHANTED RENDEZVOUS Inclusion of family members in youngsters and Bachelor party is also a 50-50 preference with many. Friends rule the youngsters party overall. 98

When it comes to a Youngsters’ Batch, it is quite an uncommon observation to see the entire family being a part of it. “I witnessed a co-existence of drunk friends and drunk uncles at my friend’s youngster’s party. It was quite beautiful and fun at the same time. It was great to see the elder lot being accommodating and not judging all the young drunk guests & vice-versa! Says Karan Mehra, an investment Banker based out of New-York. Before the sanguine & sober festivities begin for the main wedding day event, a youngster’s bash becomes a chance for the young lot to enjoy a crazy night withoutrituals and rules ! All in all, the trend of youngsters seems to be picking pace in the wedding industry scene as until a few years ago bachelor party was considered the opening event leading to wedding festivities. To- be married people are now opening up to the idea of having a youngsters party/trip at a foreign locale to oomph up the excitement factor as they gear up for their wedding. Finances, family, local destinations are not a concern for many as the event is focused on giving exciting memories to cherish forever, to both the host and the attendees. So, Move over bachelor parties...Youngsters is here to stay!

LEO SEWELL Leo Sewell’s life has always revolved around the dump since childhood. It is often said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. It stands true in Leo’s case as his sculptures are composed of recognisable objects of plastic, metal and wood. Like any dedicated artist, Leo simply loves his work. He says, “ As a boy, I grew up near a dump and became fascinated with whatever I could lay my hands on from the dump yard.” Leo is an expert at creating different dog breeds that look remarkably distinct and recognisable. He selects objects as per their colour, texture, durability and patina. To create a sculpture Leo drills small holes into each piece of junk and fashions them together using screws, nails or other objects. The artist says, “I hope my works will be like a time capsule, and will be remembered for years.”

Ha Schult loves trash, and there is no second opinion about it. He often works with other people’s trash creating large scale sculptures out of them, which calls for attention and compels each one of us to think how beautifully trash can be used as a valuable piece of art. The artist says, “We are living in the time of garbage. I have successfully created a thousand sculptures of garbage, which are ironically a mirror of ourselves.” The artist’s trash sculptures are displayed across the globe. The beauty of his sculptures are that they are unforgettable, and somehow have an engraving impact on the viewers mind. In spite of being hugely popular, the artist in all simplicity, and with humility says, “Artists have to learn every time; that is their profession. We are not important. All that is important is the time in which we are living.”

Jenny Pinto was not born to be an artist. She became an artist by accident. She says, “I love the look, touch and feel of beautiful paper. I enjoy exploring various natural fibres. The interplay of light and paper excites me the most.” She further adds, “The technique itself is very easy to learn, and anyone can recycle paper at home as a hobby.” As a raw material Jenny only uses natural fibres that are waste from agriculture and the rural cottage industry. Materials such as banana, mulberry, kora grass, jute, sisal - wonderful fibers that can make beautiful, strong paper. She uses a Hollander beater, lifting paper with traditional deckle and mould. She also uses subtle colours made from natural dyes. For Jenny, paper making is both engaging and being closer to nature. As an artist she finds it very satisfying. Lately, she has also diversified into making lamps, stationary and other paper products.

Blake McFarland is an expert when it comes to using recycled rubber tyres to create amazing life like animal sculptures. He uses tyres, which are woven and secured, thereby creating an amazing muscle like definition of the animals. Blake says, “Each recycled tyre sculpture takes around a month to get completed with detailed features.” As an artist and as a person, Blake loves to be eco-friendly, and uses only 100 per cent recycled tyres to make his distinctive tyre sculpture art. The tyre sculptures are by far the most detailed oriented and fondest piece of art that Blake has ever created. He says, “It takes over a month to create one sculpture due to the amount of detail put into each piece. I love the fact that tyre sculpture art is not only visually appealing, but also eco-friendly. They have a very natural and sophisticated feel to them that look great in any setting.”

Dario Tironi has a penchant for all things plastic. Beautiful, intricate statues designed and pieced together from discarded materials, and converted into value based statues is the artist’s forte. The explosion of colours and vibrant vitality distinguishes the artist’s sculptures. Not just that - the playful and ironic sense of his artistic research compels one to compare his works with that of Arcimboldo, the great Italian painter who was well-known for creating imaginative portrait heads made by using fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books. Dario Tironi is not only known for his human figures, but he has also mastered the art of piecing together discarded pieces of trash, electronics, etc to create animal figurines. Through his works, the artist successfully conveys the message that even scrap can produce beauty.

And the trick lies in ‘reading between the lines.’ It is our journey of discovery to capture the spirit of the client in the essence of the space. Another thing that is unavoidable, in fact is the Bible for all great designers, and that is – unlimited research, exploration and experimentation. Soak up everything, be it books, films, theatre, exhibitions, digital media, information in whatever format. Make the research so in-depth, that the idea germinating from it doesn’t need to be thrust down the throat of a client. You’ll know it, when you have isolated the most unique idea. For a great idea is transparent and can fluently talk on its own. An unwavering YS Design philosophy – “If you don’t strike gold, don’t bother to stretch yourself to package a bad idea. If it isn’t great, it isn’t worth creating.” That simple. Let us assume, you have hit upon the best possible idea. You would want to plus your idea, wouldn’t you? Then sweat out, on creating the most gripping visual translation of your line of thought. Each element of design: be it colour, font, layout and fabrication should bring something to the table. The concept should be the guiding hand in the choice of typeface that shall unlock the layout. The fabrication should emerge from the idea, not vice versa. The worst distraction is the temptation of latest fads. Filling your design with tricks and treats will only mess up the original perception. It’s a myth that you can dress up a poor design with glitzy printing techniques. Why use a foil, an emboss, or for the matter, a UV technique? Unless of course it explains your concept better. At the end of the day, remember design never lies, it clearly tells its viewers, if you are a bad designer or a great designer. Forward translation of the design proves a great litmus test for its effectiveness. Take the case of the collaterals – the experiential angle of your invite especially in a destination celebration, should run like a story, bringing in freshness with every new event. The suggestion here is to create insane ‘avatars’ of the original concept, be it the welcome note, stationery, in-room hamper, itinerary, party favours, just about anything and everything that can be customized, to maximize viewer involvement. For an Udaipur wedding, ‘Retro with Rajasthan’

became the quintessence of collateral professionalism! The bohemian Udaipur Travelogue and a miniature welcome hatbox made information fun to read – domes outlined the accommodation; man with portable radio listed the entertainment; sari-clad women, the dress code; five riding a pillion for logistics! A Game box with playing cards titled ‘Kooky Kings and Quirky Queens’ in tongue-in-cheek humour; a moustache ‘Who’s Who’ game and coasters, made a ‘funky to the score of ten’ keepsake. Talking of keepsakes, the weight of a coffee-table book as a gift, in terms of significance and value is unimaginable, especially if it is a limited edition, created for the occasion. The depth in research is not to be undermined, for that is what that defines the lifespan of a book. A volume on the cosmic couple, Shiva-Parvati titled as ‘Satyam Sivam Sundaram’ created at YS Design, way back in 2012, brought books into play as invitations for the first time. Intensive study of the Upanishads, Vedas, Samhitas, etc. finally culminated in the magnum opus.

“Throw away everything you do not consider useful or beautiful.” WILLIAM MORRIS

The invitation design becomes a masterstroke when it gets integrated into the décor. For an engagement, to fulfill the bride’s dream of a Shakespearean theme, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ made perfect sense, being a whimsical love fantasy set in an enchanted forest, where flowers played cupid. The concept of flowers between transparent sheets, was most ingeniously carried forward in the décor. Fresh florals and leaves were compressed between life-sized acrylic sheets, with quotes from the play and placed on wooden pedestals, lit with candles. Vintage books dressed in foliage formed the tabletop sculptures. Even the menu was redefined to include edible flowers. Sometimes, it works better the other way round, when the décor inspires an invite. After going through the mood board of a series of mind-blowing surreal parties, we felt each was inducing euphoria of its own kind. 116

Here was a party with LSD after-effects without even taking the drug! So it began the story of the L S D (Losing your Senses Daily) Party. Research and findings gave us the different versions of LSD that shaped the events – The kitsch carnival was rechristened as ‘The Yellow Sunshine,’ next was ‘Zig Zag Man’ wired in black & white and so on. Even the cover with the dots was iconic, as dots is synonymous with LSD. Without the idea, art is nothing, but pure candyfloss. The perfect scenario is where art and intellect break even, where the artistic right brain collaborates with the logical left-brain to create a ‘Thinking Design’. This comes without an expiry date. Even after decades and years, it will not be outdated; rather will be shockingly appealing. Now that’s what makes a perfect invitation by a perfect designer.

Any wedding photographer, or wedding professional who’s been in the business more than a day or two would be able to tell stories of different experiences with various clients. It is true for planners, decorators, and stylists, make up artists, and of course wedding photographers. We all want to have our precious creative freedom but we all work for a paying client with a certain requirements of delivery. However, while we are indeed in the service industry, as wedding photographers we should also know how to value our work, and what we bring to the table.

2018 THE BUSINESS OF WEDDING

A CREATIVE TALENT IS NOT A VENDOR Not like in the editorial or the advertising world where a photo editor usually has more experience of working with different photographers and creative talents, a wedding client is likely to be looking for a professional photographer for the first time in her/his life. They are looking to contract services from an artist and it is a mistake to confuse an artist with a vendor. It is a very easy mistake to make. In the dayto-day life we are used to buying services from the telephone company, our insurance guy and the local store. Some also work in the service industry, an investment banker or a travel agency. However, a photographer is not a vendor. He has a talent, a magic that a vendor does not possess. A vendor is there to sell something and many times it doesn’t really matter what he sells as long as there is a financial transaction at the end of the process. You can haggle, compare prices, make a bid, do what you want basically and as long as the contract is signed properly you will get what you ordered and the quality of the service or the negotiating process will not affect the product that you purchase. The coconut water will taste the same. Not with a photographer. The quality of the work you get from a photographer changes based on how you work with him and this is the biggest difference between a vendor and a creative talent. If you treat a photographer like a vendor you are shooting yourself in the foot and are likely to get a mediocre result in return. On the other hand, if you treat a coconut vendor like an artist you’ll be wasting your time and money.

126

THE FACT IS THAT VENDORS ARE EASIER TO REPLACE THAN ARTISTS Vendors could spend the day in office cubicles under fluorescent lights and wait for that call to come and an order to be placed. They will be happy to fill out the forms and spend time negotiating the terms and conditions. They could stand all day in the sun on the streets of India and sell the same chai every day without a difference in quality. They could be indifferent about what they sell as the focus here is volume and continuity. While a photographer is also paid to take pictures he is not a vendor and is not motivated in the same way. The fact is that vendors are easier to replace than artists.

F E AT U R E

CAPTURING THE PERFECT MOMENT IS THE MAGIC Getting the perfect moment, or creating the perfect picture, takes more than owning a new camera and having a website with pictures. Even if the wedding planner created the most beautiful setup and all the elements are there, it is still up to the photographer to make his magic. The next guy will be selling the same coconut but another photographer will not take the same pictures. The wedding industry is built on relationships, and many vendors expect, and sometimes value, an impersonal nature of relationship. The flower vendor really does not care, and many times is not interested in who buys the flowers. The same goes for the catering and all other service providers, but not with a photographer or an artist. Yes, of course you should treat vendors with respect. All human beings deserve respect and will do their best work if treated fairly, but when you want someone to dig deep and bring something out that is beyond the number of pictures that you get at the end of the day, you’re going to have to respond in kind.

TOP SPOTS FOR THE

PERFECT DESTINATION WEDDING FROM A FOOD & BEVERAGE PERSPECTIVE

Many who have been in the business of Indian weddings for the past many years will surely be unanimous on one aspect - an Indian wedding is ‘that’ one event in the lifetime of a family where all stops are pulled. It is in all probability that unique time, where the indulgence on an event is the highest depending on people’s budgets or sensibilities. Economies and indexes will rise and fall, so will currencies. Paper money may get demonetized and governments may stay or change, the grand Indian wedding will always reign supreme in its demeanor.

For every event, décor, catering, hospitality or entertainment company there are those favored spots for the perfect destination wedding. Needless to say each of the above looks at those spots with their own perspective. But what may be a dream destination for one can turn out to be a nightmare for the other. Each is equally critical to the success of the event but many a times food and beverage remains an often neglected part. The impact of location and décor is the initial element of experience upon entering a wedding venue for the first time. As time progresses and the guests start to settle in, a very important part kicks in – the food and beverage aspect. Many understand it, yet it needs to be reiterated that there is a

beautiful benign high that good food brings about and this feeling is critical to enjoying one’s environment. In consideration of a top spot for a perfect destination wedding this importance of food & beverage and more importantly the availability of food locally that can be enjoyed by the guests must always be kept in mind. There are some spectacular wedding venues in India. Rajasthan is lush with them - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Mount Abu among others. Stunning palaces such as the one in Baroda and the pristine beaches of Kovallam and Goa complete the package. But it is always Udaipur that steals the heart. Lake Pichola surrounded by magnificent palaces and hotels and

hospitality that Mewar was known for, this destination springs out of a fairytale. Numerous flights to various destinations and beautiful venues for various events make it even more sought after. There is an amazing array of local ingredients available and what is not can always be flown in on one of many flights that go in and out. The venues are large and allow the showcasing of a large display of food with a lot of live cooking. What more could a food and beverage provider ask for? When one looks internationally, the list of destinations is exhaustive. There is one destination though, which is spectacularly beautiful, but logistically can be one of the most difficult to work in – Venice, Italy. Its sheer beauty encompasses everything.

Choose it by all means, proviso solutions to catering can be found. Transportation can only be on foot or boats, very few ingredients are available locally, particularly in the vegetarian context and no open flames for cooking are allowed. Be prepared to invent electrical tandoors, fly in masalas and vegetables from the UK and carry food on your shoulders like medieval times. Should you succeed in pulling it off, Venice will always remain etched in memory as the most magical destination ever. Italy is like Rajasthan in India and boasts

of more top destinations than all of Europe put together. There are big cities like Rome and Florence where the sheer beauty of what you see around you is breathtaking, and then there are lesser-known places such as Fasano a small town in Puglia. Fasano like Udaipur also boasts of some amazing venues that allow presentation and showcasing of great food. Many ingredients are available locally. The soil is incredibly fertile and the vegetables grown in that soil have an exotic flavor and taste. If you are ready to get seeds from India to grow your vegetables, herbs and spices then Fasano should definitely be your preferred destination. The charming island of Mauritius is another gem. Indians need no visas, which

143

also means you can carry many chefs from India. The venues are stunning and great for showcasing food. All ingredients are available locally. Do remember that your audience will be captive as there is nothing much in the country to do. Your food is what is will have to keep them entertained, so equip your self to but your best foot forward. There is always the option to play it safe when choosing an international destination. Should you decide hedge your bets some other beautiful destinations include, Vienna, Austria, the quaint town of

144

Bubendorf, Switzerland or the rocking city of Istanbul in Turkey. If you seek adventure however do take over the kitchens of a cruise liner. Remember once the ship leaves ground you will have to do with whatever you have – so stock up. Or do a dinner in the middle of the Arabian Desert provided you can manage to transport everything there and avoid getting lots of sand into the food So before you take the plunge into deciding the next wedding destination, however incredible it may be - do take a moment to think – would any of them be as perfect they are without great food….

THE BUSINESS OF WEDDING

ROSHAN ABBAS

Managing Director Geometry Encompass

WEDDING PLANNER Come September and my social media feeds are filled with images of the extraordinary, the amazing, the bizarre and the banal. Wedding season is upon us and the glut of large format ceremonies makes it difficult to ignore and envy. The creator in me is often tempted to jump on the bandwagon. Where else can you dream of getting down the Cirque Du Soleil, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira’s. Where else can you plan for personalized services to thousands of people, find culinary delights from across the globe that make for mega meals, hire top notch designers for venues , order flowers from Amsterdam and get wedding portfolios shot by top photographers? Yet I do think there is a lot to be done. For apart from a few the business is still largely unorganized. This helps anybody and everybody proclaim they are wedding planners. References are fabricated and often images of one wedding planner make their way into ppts of others. There seems to be no standardization. Corporate event planners are facing the dreaded noose of the procurement departments. No wonder many of them are opening social divisions to cater to the one 168

segment where budget seems to be the last of the issues. If I did have some learning from the weddings I have attended and from observations across the industry here are a few humble suggestions. I say this because I think the social event business is delivering bigger dreams, making more lasting memories and delivering many unmatched experiences. So kudos to you all. You have built this industry from ground up and its poised to be the largest sector in events forever.

POINTS TO PONDER

Hire a safety consultant

Too often my what’s app has a video forward of a major wedding disaster, falling sets, incidents of injury and botched entries for the bride and groom. I would make my company a safety first concern and stress on the client the need to ensure that its not just the extravagant but the essential that must be taken care of. Here inexperienced planners often bow down to unreasonable timelines etc. Stand your ground, I would definitely

Technology first

From wedding apps, to gift registries, touch screen menus to RFID guest registrations, technology is disrupting our business. Are you tech first? Don’t do it for the sake of it, have someone in your team who gets it.

Reputed suppliers

As wedding season comes upon us we often do not realise that inventories with suppliers are limited. And they too don’t want to say no to a lucrative deal. This leads to a system, of sub letting. And the minute this happens sub-standard is a fate accompli. Have a technical director on board who makes sure the sound and light and av equipment etc is all vouched for.

Artiste relations

Very often artistes treat weddings as easy money. There is no journalist writing a bad review, no channel covering this as news and so the quality suffers. However there is a set of artistes who are conscientious and deliver. Make them your first priority. Be very clear of what the artiste is to do. Our natural habit is to say, Ho jayega! I have seen social events turn sour because the expectation was for the artiste to perform (which he did a brilliant job of ) and to hand over a wedding ring, when he refused to do this it was taken as an affront by the family. Unless it is in writing it won’t be done. Also much like A&R representatives scout the clubs and dance halls in the west for new talent always keep an eye out for the same. Too often the artiste roster at big weddings look the same. YouTube has brought the world to your doorstep. Acts can be sourced from the remotest of places. Can you create differentiation?

Creative team

Wedding are filled with ceremonies and a strong creative team will go a long way in delivering you a different solution. The reason why some of the alrger event agencies are able to do this is that they are delivering large format events for channels and clients. Here the scrutiny and fatigue factor is a lot more. So each show vies with another for TRP’s and eyeballs. Go through the credit list of an award show. Find talent, engage with them and use them.

169

2018 THE BUSINESS OF WEDDING

Brand the experience

Most functions seem to have zero correlation with the next. One lesson that we all could do well with is creating a customized branding experience at a wedding. The attention to detail is needed a lot more. Today there are wonderful typography and graphic artistes online As millennials change their viewing and consumption habits there aesthetics also change. Find a set of these new age artistes to work with.

Feedback

At the end of a wedding function if the person signing the cheque is happy it seems a job well done. Wouldn’t it be lovely if you could actually take feedback from the attendees to benchmark your performance? We cannot stay on the roster of a client without a review mechanism and measurement of delivery, then why not use the same for social events?

i

Hospitality management

Recently I have noticed a trend of ex hoteliers and travel agencies entering the business. They have built years of relationships with hotel chains, destinations, airlines, visa offices. This is a big plus for them as they are able to leverage their longstanding relationships to get better deals and freebies, they have oiled the machinery for ages and get things done smoothly. I would highly recommend getting people from a hospitality background into your team.

Logistic partners

Trying to do it all yourself to make a little more is not going to work. A host of agencies have come up to provide logistical support to events. From bar management, parking, sanitary services, invitations, transportation etc. Find a set of partners you trust in. pay a little more to get professionals on board.

Memory makers

Ultimately you are creating memories, having a great content creation team and a set of videographers and photographers on board is key. We are a country brought up on Bollywood, find the craftsmen and women who can deliver that dream video. I am always on the lookout for new talent via social media. Use your time well.

170

One last thing. While many chase the multimillion dollar wedding there is a slice of India that is looking at the sub 50 lakh wedding too. These are in numbers close to millions. I know of a few companies who are innovatively addressing this market using technology as their differentiator. Millennials have a mind of their own and are nowadays firm believers in DIY weddings. My business instinct has always been to go to the road less travelled. Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns have much less competition. How about franchising your brand and experience to those cities? These do not need to be overnight arrangements because you have a sudden requirement but should be long term nurtured relationships. No one agency can singly service this entire market, whoever find a solution to providing standardised services with personalised care will win the bottom of the pyramid.

Fortunately, Thailand is filled with an array of gorgeous wedding locales, from the mountainous Northern city of Chiang Mai to the lively and electric city of Bangkok, and of course, all the tropical paradises, which include Phuket, Koh Samui, Hua Hin and Pattaya. More and more Indian couples are opting to have their wedding here thanks to the country’s warm hospitality and value for money. The quality of Thailand’s hotels and resorts

is among the highest ranked in the world, and the best part is, they offer impressive all-in packages at shocking prices. Another bonus is the flexibility you will find here, as hotels and resorts don’t hesitate to offer custom-made weddings, which can be tailored around your religious customs and personal desires. Most resorts even cater to wedding groups of over 500 guests. Of course, there’s no way to cover every single one of Thailand’s vacation properties, but we at Masala, have handpicked a list of venues, each with their own specific set of advantages. Some have an established history with hosting spectacular Indian weddings, while others are fresh to the scene and offer exciting venues with unique perks. We have no doubt that every couple can find their dream wedding destination in the Land of Smiles. 181

here is much to love about Hua Hin, a quiet beach town just 200km from Bangkok. Known as Thailand’s leading destination for Indian weddings, Hua Hin exudes old-world charm, and was in fact, the place where the Thai royal family once spent their summers. They often resided at Maruekhathaiyawan Palace, which stands proud on a manicured lawn facing the idyllic Cha-am beach. Nowadays, Hua Hin is famous as a weekend getaway, and although lesser known, Cha-am also boasts plenty of luxury resorts with the added bonus of having less crowds. Unmissable sights include the Hua Hin Night Market, where visitors can shop for bargain goods and feast on seafood 194

delights. There is also Khao Takiab, loosely translated as ‘Chopstick Mountain,’ where guests can get up close with gangs of monkeys and enjoy a picturesque view of the aquamarine bay. But if you’re looking for a more thrilling way to spend time, Hua Hin is also home to a large number of water parks, like the Black Mountain Water Park and the Vana Nava Hua Hin Water

Jungle. Other stunning destinations are the Santorini Park Cha-am, which has Greek architecture, shopping boutiques and an amusement park, as well as The Venezia Hua Hin, which brings Venice’s gondolas to Thailand’s shores. Hua Hin holds exceptional charm for golfers too. Many consider the beach town to be the cradle of golf in Thailand with its many golf courses, just a short half an hour drive from the main town. Royal Hua Hin Golf Course was actually the first course built in Thailand. Currently, there are 10 golf courses altogether, including the Black Mountain Golf Club and Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin, which have been voted among the best in the world.
