Jean-Jacques Pothier (became Maitre 1750) Pothier’s career spanned a period of 35 years. After marrying, Jean-Jacques Pothier settled as a menuisierébéniste in the rue Mazarine from where he moved to the rue de Bourbon around 1775-76. There is mention of him as a former`master-joiner’ in 1786 which leads to the supposition that he left the trade in around 17805. Almost nothing is recorded regarding Pothier’s clientele even though he manufactured very fine pieces. +44 (0)20 7733 0574

NICHOLAS WELLS ANTIQUES The quality of his work was so high that he had the opportunity to work on a regular basis with Georges Jacob, which is evidenced by some pieces virtually identical to those coming from the celebrated Jacob workshop. His work covers the time between the mid 18th century and the last years before the revolution. His style became highly significant in the late 1760’s with the neo-classical revival. His production over the period is rich, varied and notably high quality. The present pair of fauteuils are Louis XV period circa 1760 and are classical examples of his early style. They are noted for their elegant line that is seen across his output from the bergeres as attached at Sothebys, to the wing chair at Christie’s where the same fluid line of the front apron is repeated. The frames are channeled and carved with a simple, elegant outline, void of ornament, besides scallop shells carved at the knees. For the period, these fauteuils are significantly broader than most at 70 cm wide. Pothier was one of the few makers of the period to specialise in producing chairs of this scale and width. Each chair stamped I Pothier on the front rail.

NICHOLAS WELLS ANTIQUES A GROUP OF THREE GRAND TOUR ARCHITECTURAL CAPRICES This invented architectural setting includes classical Roman ruins with arches and collonades of possibly temples set on podiums, the foreground with grand tourists amongst the ruins of fallen columns. Each panel showing different types of column, from fluted Doric columns on the left, Corinthian capitals in the middle and Ionic fluted pillasters on the right. Height 139.00cm (54.72 inches) Width 53.00cm (20.87 inches) The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means, or those of more humble origin who could find a sponsor. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transport in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. Though primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry, similar trips were made by wealthy young men of Protestant Northern European nations on Continental Europe, and from the second half of the 18th century, by some South and North Americans. The tradition declined with the lapse of neo-classical enthusiasm and after rail and steamship travel made the journeys much easier when Thomas Cook made the “Cook’s Tour” of early mass tourism a byword.

NICHOLAS WELLS ANTIQUES A PAIR OF LOUIS XV ORMOLU APPLIQUÉS France, c. 1750 A very fine quality pair of mid 18th century gilt bronze wall appliquÊs conceived circa 1750, these wall lights are typical of the finest work produced during the high rococo period under the reign of Louis XV. The design is exceptionally accomplished with sinuous rococo forms moving effortlessly without interruption.

The gilt bronze work is exceptionally good with finely chased details to the arms, drip pans and nozzles, the surface with burnished gilt work contrasted with matt edges to give contrast to the opulent gold plated surface. Cast with the lost wax process, the backs retain some of the sand from the original casting. Nicolas Simon Courtois (Maitre 1766) In ‘Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe Siecle’ Pierre Kjellberg notes that Nicolas Courtois was a Parisian cabinet maker who worked in the rue Charenton in the vicinity of the Bastille. He became master (Maitre) on 19th November 1766 and continued to work up to the French Revolution. He is particularly known as a maker of chairs from the rococo Louis XV period, through the transitional period such as the present pair of fauteuils and Neo-Classicism under Louis XIV. http://www.nicholaswells.com/art-and-antiques/d/a-fine-pair-of-louis-xv-fauteuils-by-n-s-courtois/223717#.Vjime67hBZ0

What is Transitional ? The term ‘transitional’ defines the period between the Rococo and Neo-Classical during the later years of Louis XV’s reign. These fauteuils have rococo backs and arms but rather than a curved cabriole leg, the Transitional leg is used with neo-classical fluting. As the style progressed under the reign of Louis XVI, chairs became increasingly restrained. +44 (0)20 7733 0574

ARTS & ANTIQUES GUIDE

NICHOLAS WELLS ANTIQUES

Exquisite Antiques with Nicholas Wells LAPADA

British antique dealer Nicholas Wells curates a collection of fine antiques that pays homage to his early years at Mallett at Bourdon House.

T

rained at the ‘school’ of Mallett, Nicholas Wells continues to deal in a wide variety of high quality antiques and works of art while maintaining an ever increasing standard of quality and originality. Nicholas has curated a collection that is distinct yet harmonious with antique furniture and objects chosen for their fine quality and unusual character. Like Bourdon House in Berkeley Square, the main style of the collection is inspired by the last three centuries of Continental decorative arts of unusually high quality and design. Louis XIV cabinets stand alongside Regency Irish desks and chrome plated 20th century objects and lighting. Furniture and works of art are selected from his travels across Northern Europe and down to southern Italy. You have to keep an open mind when travelling, the next great object may be a wonderful 18th century Chinese vase with an amazing glaze or a 1950’s brass and glass drinks trolley. You never know what is around the corner. His look is fused together by a common bond of quality, rarity and an eye for the unusual. By sourcing distinctive pieces, Nicholas offers a strong collection of impressive antiques that private clients and interior designers can easily work with in their projects catering to different tastes and budgets. The business is run together with Lord Constantine at Cross Hall Manor, only 50 minutes north of London on the A1 or less by direct train to

32

St Neots, where they exhibit a significant collection of Continental and English furniture in the newly redecorated Manor. The Manor provides substantial rooms for showing larger pieces as well as private rooms for showing more unusual and rare objects to their best. The 17th century manor is set within beautifully maintained gardens, which Lord Constantine opens to the public annually as well as hosting numerous charity events. The private gardens are one of the highlights of a visit to Cross Hall, they are beautifully manicured throughout the year, with many interesting areas. The garden design softens the edges and emphasises the beauty of the house. Now with several large ponds, temples, sculptures and substantial flowerbeds filled with Acers and Rhododendrons. Nicholas and Lord Constantine work with British and International interior designers and private clients from across the globe. They ship antique furniture and objects worldwide on a regular basis and have facilities to accommodate clients individual requirements. “We had not attended the Olympia Fair in quite some time, and were so happy to connect with Nicholas this year. He had a wonderful selection of unique pieces, and we (and thankfully our clients) fell in love with a pair of Victorian iron mirrors. We have never seen anything like them – they will be a showstopper when installed in their home.We look forward to seeing what he has to offer in the future!” Sarah DePalo Cullman & Kravis, Inc. Comparables : These candelabra are the same pattern as a series of lighting supplied to the 6th Duke of Devonshire in 1831 for use in his London residence, Devonshire House, by the leading manufacturer of chandeliers, W. & H. Perry. They are all characterised by the incorporation of matched prisms, or developments of this concept. Several sets of candelabra were commissioned and at least three chandeliers, one of which hangs in the Yellow Drawing Room at Buscot Park. A pair of candelabra are now at Chatsworth House as well as wall lights of the same pattern. We have searched extensively for other sets of candelabra in this model but have not found any comparatives offered on the open market, either through dealers or through the sale rooms. The chandelier is related in design to some of the earliest known glass chandeliers, including glass and gilt-gesso chandeliers at Grimsthorpe which were installed there in 1726 (Country House Lighting 1660-1890, Leeds, 1992, pp. 42-43, fig. 26). Maydwell and Windle supplied a pair of large two-tier eighteen-light glass chandeliers for the Gallery ‘tribunes’ at Holkham, Norfolk, that had been hung there by 1757. Maydwell and Windle were established at The King’s Arms in the Strand and their mid-18th century trade-card advertised several related cut-glass chandeliers. +44 (0)20 7733 0574

NICHOLAS WELLS ANTIQUES A RARE PAIR OF FINE SANDSTONE CARVED LIONS England,

c. 1850

A very fine pair of sandstone lions carved after the originals by Antonio Canova. Antonio Canova, Marchese d’Ischia ( 1757- 1822 ) was an Italian sculptor, one of the greatest exponents of Neoclassicism. Among his works are the tombs of popes Clement XIV (1783–87) and Clement XIII (1787–92) and statues of Napoleon and of his sister Princess Borghese reclining as Venus Victrix. In 1775 Canova set up his own studio in Venice. In 1779 he sculpted Daedalus and Icarus which had been commissioned by Pisani, procurator of the Venetian republic; it was Canova’s first important work In 1783 Canova received an important commission for the tomb of Pope Clement XIV in the Roman church of SS. Apostoli. That same year he was commissioned to execute a tomb in St. Peter’s to Pope Clement XIII. Completed in 1792, it shows a more developed understanding of the classical aesthetic of antiquity than his monument to Clement XIV. The Lions on the monument became known as the Canova Lions & are arguably the most famous of Lion sculpture ever made. In 1805 he was appointed inspector general of fine arts and antiquities of the papal state. In 1810 he was made president of the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome. He sculpted his well-known Three Graces from 1812 to 1816. After having visited Paris to arrange for the return of Italian art treasures plundered by the French, he went to London ( 1815 ) to give his opinion on the Elgin Marbles. The success of his mission in Paris led to the reward of the title of Marquis of Ischia by the Pope. While in London, the Prince Regent, later George IV, commissioned a life-size group of Venus and Mars. Other late commissions included the Stuart monument in St. Peter’s ( 1819 ), the alteration and completion of the equestrian Napoleon into Charles III of Naples ( 1819 ), and a monument of George Washington idealized in Roman costume, erected at Raleigh, N.C., in 1821. Canova’s domination of European sculpture at the turn of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th is reflected in countless adulations in memoirs, poems, and newspapers. “Sublime,” “superb,” and “marvellous” are adjectives frequently found describing Canova’s work in his lifetime. Height 58.00cm (22.83 inches) Width 99.00cm (38.98 inches) Depth 38.00cm (14.96 inches)
