What’s more, they’re aimed at cars featuring ‘stop/start’ systems, like that fitted on some BMW models. conventional batteries aren’t really up to the ‘stop/start’ system, so it’s essential you fit the correct specification battery to your customer’s car. The Elite range consists of eight part numbers, and feature the VW tilt/tip lid. They are suitable for up to 40,000 engine starts and, equally importantly, are designed for higherspecification cars fitted with satellite navigation units, premium sound

systems, DVD players and climate control systems. The Elite line-up can also be fitted inside the car, courtesy of their sealed and leak-proof casing. yuasa also offers the 51-strong Professional range, which is maintenance-free and is ideal for standard-specification cars. Tested for 25,000 engine starts, they are, like the AGM and Elite batteries, OE specification. While batteries for cars will make up almost all battery demand, it’s important not to forget both the cV and leisure sectors. yuasa offers two cV battery ranges, cargo, with

23 part numbers, and SHD (Super Heavy Duty), with eight part numbers. Both line-ups are to OE specification. The SHD offering is aimed at higherspecification vehicles (ie, those with tail lifts and sleeper cabs) but are also ideal for intensive urban use. The leisure market cannot be ignored either, and the yuasa leisure range consists of five part numbers. Being deep cycle, they are ideal for caravans, and also a lucrative extra revenue stream for switched-on workshops. There’s also a threestrong marine maintenance-free battery offering, again featuring deep-cycle properties.

What does it mean Steve? “From now on, all catalysts supplied to post march 2001 registered cars have to be type-approved and while at first glance the legislation seems yet more meddling, it offers the aftermarket increased profit potential and may force some of the more spurious suppliers out of this lucrative market segment.” This legislation already mirrors that enforced across mainland europe. Needless to say the legislation is driven by a green agenda, but with higher-value

With this Brussels-enforced (and policed) legislation causing shockwaves throughout the aftermarket, there is one noticeable benefit – a level playing field between the aftermarket and the main dealer, as VM workshops can no longer claim their catalysts are of superior quality to those from an independent garage.

THE GLOVES ARE OFF!

the gloves are off! Vehicle manufacturers versus the aftermarket

Getting a modern diesel engine to deliver power, economy and remain ‘green’ is a tough call for the VMs. But it is also a tough call for independent garages, as they need good diagnostic equipment just as much as they need a set of spanners and screwdrivers.

Having access to high-quality replacement components is of paramount importance. Like it or not, modern engines work to exacting tolerances which means fitting a roughly approximate component just won’t do, because the engine’s computer system will detect abnormal functions. The last thing you want is a customer to drive away, only to come back five minutes later with oBd dashboard light glowing nicely… If you can remember the days when an approximate-fit carb needle jet would do, or a not-quite-right set of spark plugs were all that was available, you’d best put those thoughts right out of your mind, because the influence emissions legislation has had on engine design (and how those engines are maintained) is simply enormous. exhaust gas return (eGr) valves are an important part of any engine, removing up to 50 percent of exhaust gas before it reaches the catalyst. also known as electro pneumatic valves, they have numerous functions in an engine, the most widely known is the eGr. Clearly it’s an important component and one that needs to be operating properly, otherwise the catalyst could be damaged.

Put simply, if an eGr valve isn’t working properly, the car probably isn’t driving properly. In most cases an eGr valve simply stops working, a result of the extremely high temperatures it has to work in. The usual situation is a valve failing to close properly, which is a result of soot build-up, and the result is poorer performance. Valves that fail to

It’s well known that spark plug sales are in decline, but the good news is that glow plug sales are on the increase. Unlike spark plugs, glow plugs aren’t seen as service items, but increasingly as an engine component. As with spark plugs, glow plug life expectancy has increased dramatically, and changing them isn’t as common as it used to be. The good news for workshops is that highervalue components used in glow plugs leads to greater profit margins, and that has to be welcomed.

Why the move to DMF? you can blame it on the rise of the diesel engine and motorists insatiable demand for more power and increased smoothness from their cars. High-power diesel engines can suffer from serious vibration, which can affect both the gearbox and driveline. The solution? Dual-mass flywheels, which move damper springs from the driven plate to the flywheel, with its large damper springs that absorb vibration successfully. Splitting the vibration into two means peak engine vibration to the lowest possible revs i.e. lower than idle speed. The result is a much smoother engine covering the biggest cars and vans down to small-engined hatchbacks.
