Visit Derbyshire & The Peak District

Welcome to

Derbyshire & The Peak District www.visitDerbyshireandthepeakdistrict.co.uk

From rugged moors to rolling dales and lush meadows to leafy forests, Derbyshire & The Peak District has it all. Nowhere else in the UK will you find a wide variety of stunning scenery, first-class places to stay and visit, a wealth of things to see and do and quality venues to eat and drink in such a compact area. Nestling right at the heart of the country, it’s effortlessly easy to reach - the ideal location to enjoy a short break or longer stay at any time of year. In this guide we aim to give you a flavour of the fantastic range and choice of places you can visit while you’re here. The sheer beauty of the area is encapsulated in the landscapes - from the wide open spaces and bracing moors of the Dark Peak in the north right down to the gentler countryside and woodlands of the National Forest in the south. In the north, visit one of the famous show caverns in Castleton, watch otters playing at the Chestnut Centre Conservation Park near Chapelen-le-Frith or take an exhilarating walk and enjoy sweeping moorland views at the National Trust’s Longshaw Estate. Discover Dovedale, one of the White Peak’s best-known and beautiful dales, where you can cross Izaak Walton’s beloved river on the famous stepping stones. Explore the groundbreaking industrial history, factory shops and museums at the Derwent Valley World Heritage site linking Matlock Bath and Derby. Enjoy a trip to Matlock and Matlock Bath - featuring the Peak District Mining Museum, Matlock Bath Aquarium and the Heights of Abraham, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Derwent Valley from the lofty heights of a cable car. Visit one of the many historic houses and castles - ranging from majestic Keddleston Hall and medieval Haddon Hall to Bolsover Castle, near Chesterfield and Peveril Castle at Castleton - which both boast panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. Relax in attractive market towns such as Ashbourne, Buxton, Bakewell, Chesterfield, Leek and Melbourne. Or explore one of many picturesque villages, such as the famous ‘Plague’ village of Eyam, Ashford in the Water with its ancient sheepwash bridge or Ticknall in the National Forest. As well as sight-seeing, you can browse for shopping bargains or sample quality local produce in their tea shops and restaurants. The city of Derby is flourishing as a top city break destination - with fantastic shopping and culture, a wide choice of accommodation and a feast of worldwide cuisine. More than 2,000 years of history complement its vibrant contemporary character. A £2 billion Derby Cityscape Masterplan is underway, which has already attracted £1 billion, and the city’s riverside is also enjoying a multi-million pound renaissance. Sample the very best of city and country in Derby’s 300plus open spaces, and the National Forest and the Peak District - both just a short drive away. Whatever your interests, you’ll find plenty to excite and inspire you.
