Visit Eden & The North Pennines

Welcome to

Eden & The North Pennines

www.visitEdenandthenorthpennines.co.uk

This unspoilt and relatively unknown part of Britain spans three National Parks, including the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland. As the title suggests it also encompasses the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is so much to see and do that visitors can explore a different area and landscape every single day, with a huge variety of places to visit and an overwhelming range of breathtaking walks to suit all capabilities and levels of stamina! At 9 miles long and many peoples favourite of the English lakes, Ullswater seems a good place to start. As one of the northern lakes, it’s less touristy than the central and southern lakes and in our humble opinion it’s even more beautiful. What better way to take it all in, than by taking a trip on one of the famous Ullswater Steamers. If you’re near Carlisle on the other hand don’t miss visiting Tullie House; originally a 17th century private residence, it has since been enlarged and adapted to become one of the finest provincial museums in the country. You could also take a trip to Alston, the highest market town in Britain and learn about the local history and heritage at the Hub Museum before finding out about the working life of people in days gone by at Killhope Lead Mining Museum. Searching for something a bit different? Then why not take a relaxing ride on one of our two local heritage railways, the South Tynedale Railway and Weardale Railway. There’s more, head south to spend a day in the Yorkshire Dales. Packed full of castles and abbeys including Fountains Abbey - which is a World Heritage site - or Harlow Carr the Northern Horticulture Centre in Harrogate. With both the East and West Coasts being in easy reach you can visit Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass in the West or spend a day on the East Coast bird watching at RSPB Saltholme near Hartlepool. Alternatively spend a relaxing day at Eden Ostrich World or Trotters, both fantastic animal centres and well worth the whole family paying a visit. There’s all this and more, amongst some of the most stunning scenery that England has to offer. Whatever you decide to do, we are sure that you will enjoy this rich landscape and the attractions, castles and museums that help define this special and unique part of the country. So many people rush past heading for busier, more crowded destinations, leaving the area to be enjoyed and appreciated by the more discerning.
