Harvest Christmas trees on Nez Perce-Clearwater forests FREE PERMITS AVAILABLE TO FOURTH GRADERS KAMIAH — In Idaho County and the surrounding area, it is a popular tradition to begin the holiday season with an outing to the forest to cut the family’s Christmas tree. Permits for Christmas tree cutting are now available at Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests offices, as well as several local vendors. Free permits are also available to all fourth graders through the Every Kid in a Park program.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

David Palmer, Sr., with his son David Jr. “Davey,” on his shoulders, gets Christmas trees for two families: small ones, suited for military trailer living in 1960. The family was stationed at Cottonwood Air Force Base where NICI is now located.

Christmas tree permits are $5 each and are limited to three permits per family. A permit is required for each tree cut. The permits can be purchased from any Forest Service office or visitor center, as well as at several local vendors. A list of vendors can be found in the “Cutting a Christmas Tree on your Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests” brochure, available at forest offices and on our website: www.fs.usda.gov/main/nezperceclearwater/passes-permits/forestproducts. Students in fourth grade can acquire a free Christmas tree permit with their Every Kid in a Park pass!. Fourth graders must visit a Forest Service office with a parent or guardian and present their Every Kid in a Park pass to receive their Christmas tree permit. This allows fourth graders and accompanying family members free access to public lands across the United States. This pass is free of charge and can be downloaded online. For information: visit www.everykidinapark.gov or your local ranger station. As a general rule, no special areas on the forest are designated for Christmas tree cutting. Cut trees at least 200 feet from well–traveled roads, flowing water, campgrounds, and recreation sites. Select trees from thickets and overstocked areas and choose a tree that is the right size for needs. Remember to attach a permit to each tree cut before transporting it in a vehicle. Be aware of winter driving conditions while searching for your tree: pack tire chains, a first aid kid, and other emergency equipment. Dress in layers and bring plenty of food and water for the whole family. For more tips visit the local ranger station and see the “Cutting a Christmas Tree on your Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests” brochure. Visit HTTPS://WWW.FS.USDA.GOV/DETAIL / NEZPERCECLEARWATER / ABOUTFOREST/OFFICES.
