GRANGEVILLE -The third annual
Warbird Weekend runs Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, at the Idaho County Airport, featuring historic aircraft, plane flights, aviation exhibits and related events.
Free to the public, the annual event recognizes the role of aviation in Idaho County’s history and highlights the airport – located in Grangeville -- as an economic development hub, as well as a gateway to outdoor recreation in North Central Idaho. Both days of the event feature self-guided aircraft tours starting at 8 a.m., ending on 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday; as well as an on-site breakfast offered from 8 to 11 a.m. by The Twisted Cellar. Among the featured aircraft planning to attend this year include the 1943 Fairchild PT26, Nanchang CJ6, T-6 Trainer, 1950 Vance AFB T-28 and Vance T-28 C Model, Harpoon PV-2 and a Calidus Autogyro. Organizers are also working on bringing in additional historic aircraft.

Warbird Warrior Planning to attend Warbird Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13? Here are a few tips to get as much out of this two-day event as possible.
P
lanes start arriving early, even a day or two,
before the event. So be watching the skies for some of the special aircraft as they come in for the event… as you may get a little air show!
Historic aircraft are on display both Saturday and Sunday, but the crowds are thinner on Sunday. This gives you more of an opportunity for discussion with aircraft pilots and owners. And when planes are departing on Sunday, they may buzz the field before turning their noses toward home.
It gets hot on that tarmac, so bring a hat and water. Seating is available on site, but packing a portable chair is a nice extra if you want to rest closer to the action.

Check the signs on what you can touch or not, and where you can grab and step. These are historic planes, so some are definitely “eyes only” for the exhibit. Unsure? Ask the pilot.

Since 1951, the Grangeville Smokejumpers have provided aerially delivered firefighters to wildfires across the United States. Smokejumpers specialize in the use of parachutes and fixed-wing aircraft as a means for rapid deployment of resources to remote locations. While smokejumping and fire management is their specialty, the jumpers

have a wide range of skills and backgrounds that offer a diverse and highly adaptable organization that can fill any niche. Smokejumping was born on the Nez Perce National Forest. It was on the Nez Perce Forest's Moose Creek Ranger District that Rufus Robinson, of Kooskia, Idaho and Earl Cooley, of Hamilton, Mont., made the nation's
first "live" fire jump, at the Martin Creek Fire on July 12, 1940. Robinson's and Cooley's squad had been positioned by the Region One Smokejumper Program at the remote Moose Creek Ranger Station, where a parachute loft was built in 1941 to better accommodate smokejumper operations in this vicinity.
