Recently I was telling my friend about my job, and she asked me a question that stumped me at first, “Are you friends with the mayor?” she asked. My answer was, well yes … and no. For a reporter, maintaining a relationship with the people you work with is a complicated tightrope walk. Truth be told I feel like if my job were not to keep an eye on things, I could probably be pretty good friends with everyone at City Hall, but as a journalist you’re constantly trying to find a balance of keeping communication open with everyone and remaining as objective as possible. You want to have pleasant encounters with people, but you’re also there to scrutinize. Reporters are supposed to provide insight on wrongdoing, misuse and dangers to the community as well as highlight the good stuff that goes on. In Meridian, we typically have a lot more good than bad going on, which is great. A few times I have been thanked for making Meridian look good, and I replied that a city stands on its own. I only report on what I can factually prove. So if the city actually has low crime and opens more

City budget workshops to be streamed live
The city of Meridian live streamed its first budget workshop meeting of the year Wednesday. Meridian City Council met with Mayor Tammy de Weerd and department directors to discuss proposed budget requests for fiscal year 2016, which will begin Oct. 1. “It’s very important to the city that we are transparent to the public and provide means for our residents to get involved in the budgeting process, whether in person or via a live stream,” de Weerd said. Budget discussions will continue at a second budget workshop to be held July 21. A tentative budget will be adopted July 28 and a public hearing is scheduled to be held Sept. 1 during which the fiscal year 2016 budget will be formally adopted. It can be intimidating and frustrating. by Zachary Chastaine It happens to journalists, too. We make zchastaine@idahopress.com mistakes, and sometimes a journalist does © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS something bad and ironically our mistakes or wrongdoing are typically uncovered by other journalists. Everyone at our office was sick to our stomach when we heard that Rolling Stone was retracting a story called “A Rape on Campus” because it was not a factual article. This was more than a little mistake; this was a major blunder that was going to reflect poorly on the profession. Now, getting back on track here, it’s true that I like Mayor Tammy de Weerd and pretty much everyone else I work with at City Hall. I do try to keep it professional. We all wave and greet each other when we see each other, and it’s always pleasant to visit City Hall, but we also have strong communication between our offices. And I would say that openness from City Hall means we are friends for the right reasons.

Summer’s in Session: An Educational Series (Part 2 of 6):
The Boise Co-op has voluntarily closed its deli after a salmonella outbreak that has sickened about 30 people. According to a post on the Boise Co-op’s website, the Central District Health Department confirmed the salmonella outbreak is linked to food prepared in the co-op’s deli. The grocery store also advised people who purchased food from the deli after June 1 to discard it and see customer service for a refund. The health department investigated after the reported cases of salmonella were linked to the co-op. It is working with the store to determine how salmonella may have entered a food source. Salmonella generally causes symptoms of diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting, according to the health department. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.
Voles near Caldwell may have had plague
CALDWELL — About a dozen dead voles found near Caldwell have tested presumptively positive for plague, according to Idaho Department of Fish and Game wildlife veterinarian Mark Drew. The voles, commonly called meadow mice, were found in an area near Highway 19 immediately west of Caldwell. The deaths appear to be localized and not widespread, but Drew urges people to take precautions and report groups of dead rodents. It doesn’t appear that the plague-carrying voles in Canyon County are connected to plague-positive ground squirrels recently discovered in Ada County, Drew said. It’s more likely, he said, that plague has been present in local rodent populations for a long time, and is only now emerging because of weather and other environmental conditions.

Public art expands in Meridian

The vinyl wraps convert utility boxes found on sidewalks and near intersections around Meridian from white or green boxes into a platform for artwork submitted from residents themselves. The wraps are similar to car wraps which can convert any normal car into a hot rod complete with flames and racing stripes. Hillary Bodnar, arts and culture specialist with the city of Meridian, said there were some benefits to the wraps over other types of art. Ada County Highway District releases draft roadside memorial policy for comment T he Ada County Highway District has released a draft of a policy for roadside memorials for public comment. The proposal would allow memorials, but the displays would be regulated to ensure public safety and would stipulate that the monuments are well maintained. The policy will be discussed at an ACHD Commission work session July 8. Depending on public feedback and the commissioners’ preference, the policy may be up for adoption at the ACHD night meeting July 22. To remain in the public right-of-way, the areas around local roads, intersections and bridges, all memorials will be required to be registered with ACHD. Such notice will allow for inspections and any needed modifications to prevent the display from becoming a hazard to drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. Unregistered memorials are subject to removal, although ACHD said it would make a good faith effort to contact the sponsor to register the display or remedy any issues that prevent approval. The fixes could include relocating or amending the entire display or some of its elements. A temporary memorial can remain for up to one year, under the draft policy. Afterward, the display must be removed or converted to a permanent memorial, which would require a license agree-
ment for use of the public right-of-way. Ghost bikes, which have appeared across Ada County in the last several years at sites where cyclists have died, would be treated as temporary memorials. As an alternative to a memorial, sponsors can ask for an ACHD-supplied sign that would carry a safety message as well as the deceased’s name. The signs would comply will all of the same safety and upkeep requirements. The proposal would replace an informal ACHD policy that largely allowed memorials as long as they did not create a hazard or block public access to the right-ofway. Memorial sponsors and critics have complained that the lack of written guidance has left too much uncertainty over what may be acceptable, which prompted the commission to ask for a policy. The draft policy follows existing ACHD ordinances and state laws that require the right-of-way to be free from distractions, sight obstructions and impediments for users to access roadway features. If a memorial meets those requirements, then it will likely be approved, under the proposal. The proposal can be viewed at achdidaho.org, under Draft Policy for Roadside Memorials. Comments can be sent to tellus@achdidaho.org or mailed to the ACHD Commission, 3775 Adams St., Garden City, ID 83714.

While performing Latin themed and Mexican folk songs, students will be joined on stage with guest performers from Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo, a folklorico dance studio located in Nampa. With 10 pianos on the stage, the concert presents a unique experience for the performers and audience to hear several pianos all playing at once. ZZ Top comes to the Ford Idaho Center NAMPA – The Ford Idaho Center and Knitting Factory Entertainment announced that Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame legends ZZ Top with guests Blackberry Smoke will bring the Grooves and Gravy Tour to the Ford Amphitheater at 7 p.m. Sept. 16. ZZ Top singer and guitarist Billy F. Gibbons said mutual admiration between the bands is strong as both bands share southern roots. “We’re looking forward to getting out there with the Blackberry Smoke guys,” Gibbons said. “Grooves and Gravy promises to be one of the rowdiest outings of the year so come on out and get crazy with us.” Blackberry Smoke lead singer and guitarist Charlie Starr had similar thoughts on the upcoming show. “We can’t wait to go out and make music with the legendary ZZ Top,” Starr said. ZZ Top is an anomaly in the world of rock – singer and guitarist Gibbons, bassist and singer Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, aka “the man with no beard,” have been the most consistently stable lineup in the entire genre. For more than 45 years, “that little ol’ band from Tex-
as” has been putting out albums with 25 million U.S. sales to date, touring relentlessly and showing no signs of slowing down. Blackberry Smoke formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2000, playing a blend of Southern rock and country rock to enthusiastic audiences. No strangers to rigorous touring, they headlined multiple United States tours and have also been the supporting act for Zac Brown Band, Eric Church and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Blackberry Smoke have recently signed with Rounder Records, who released the group’s fourth album Holding All the Roses in February.

Meridian and Heritage Libraries participating in national project T
he Heritage Middle School Library and Meridian Library District participated in a national project to support innovation in libraries. Erica Compton, Idaho Commission for Libraries project coordinator and co-developer of the Idaho’s Make It at the Library project, was one of 30 experts invited to present at the June 11 Capitol Hill Maker Faire. She also showcased Idaho’s maker movement during the June 12 National Maker Faire in Washington, D.C. Hosted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Capitol Hill Maker Faire explored the movement driven by hobbyists, crafters and innovators that is breathing new life into American manufacturing. The faire was open to members of Congress, their staff and the public and was held in conjunction with the much larger National Maker Faire, a collaboration between NationOfMakers.org, Maker Media, the University of the District of Columbia and the D.C. Government. The Maker Faire events started off the National Week of Making from today to June 18. Amy Armstrong, teacher-librarian at Heritage Middle School has worked to establish a maker space at Heritage Middle School which operates during lunch periods and a few select days to provide creative learning opportunities for students. “We worked with the Meridian Library District this year to promote our maker activities and to help promote their activities,” Armstrong said. “Last week we had our first annual Make It Fair. The Meridian Public Library came with a makey makey game and the Oculus Rift. Bill Albert, the CEO of Nampa-based Stemfinity, brought in several tables with activities for students to do, from Cubelets to Snap Circuits to a talking robot. Students had so much Zachary Chastaine/MP fun that they didn’t want to leave.” Nick Grove with the Meridian Library demonstrates some of the library’s printers and technologies. Construction begins on new town homes A Greg Kreller/IPT
Officials break ground Monday afternoon for the 359-unit town home community west of the Ten Mile Road and Franklin Road intersection in Meridian.
groundbreaking was held Monday at the site of a new town home complex located near the west side of the Ten Mile and Franklin Road intersection. When complete the project will provide 359 housing units and a spokesperson for the developer Noelle Laury said in a statement that the project is expected to generate more than 100 construction jobs. The project will include a childrens’ play area, a health and fitness center, a pool and spa and a community garden. Laury said the community would be an exceptional place for young adults, empty-nesters and seniors and that it would provide more housing options for Meridian and even Canyon County residents. Another design element with the location of the homes is their location close to Interstate 84 to create easier commuting options for residents. Some
demographics released by Ten Mile Development LLC regarding the new housing said that 80 percent of Meridian residents drive to work each day. Ten Mile Development LLC also said that the gross median rent for Meridian in 2010 was $965 per month while in Boise it was $718. The developer said this community would provide competitive housing prices. The community will be 15 minutes from popular destinations in Meridian and Nampa. Residents will be within 15 minutes of The Village at Meridian and the Ford Idaho Center. Laury said multi-family housing complexes, such as the one being built, make up less than two percent of the total housing options in Meridian and the project would help alleviate this shortage. When complete, the community will have 92 single bedroom, single bathroom units and 277 two bedroom, two bathroom units with a minimum square footage of 1,924 square feet.

Truck flips on 10 Mile Road off ramp
N
o one was seriously injured when a truck carrying recycled paper tipped onto its side while exiting eastbound Interstate 84 onto Ten Mile Road on Tuesday, Ada County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ryan Jensen said, although a passenger in the vehicle suffered a few minor scrapes and bruises. “One of the witnesses said that they heard a loud pop,” Jensen said. “It may have blown a tire. We’re not sure. The driver corrected, and it rolled onto its side.” No other vehicles were involved in the crash, he said, although a passenger car may have punctured a tire while rolling over debris. The case is under investigation by Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Meridian Walking Tours Recognized in 38th Annual Orchids and Onions Awards
T
he Meridian Historic Walking Tour received an Orchid Award for Cultural Heritage Preservation on June 9 and was praised for engaging civic and business leaders, historians and elementary school students to promote the city’s history and architecture. Preservation Idaho also honored the Owyhee Hotel and Intermountain Gas with an Orchid Award at its 38th Annual Orchids and Onions Awards ceremony recently held in Sandpoint. This year’s Orchid in Excellence in Historic Preservation went to the Owyhee Hotel.
Intermountain Gas Company Headquarters received an award for Heritage Stewardship maintaining that decades of investment in maintenance and care by its owner have left it much as it appeared at its completion in 1965. Every year, Preservation Idaho hosts the Orchids and Onions Awards, an awards ceremony designed to celebrate individuals and organizations that have made a positive contribution to historic preservation in Idaho, and in turn to bring awareness to those projects that have shown insensitivity to the state’s cultural history.
