Crowdfunding raises $1K in two days for local teen

hen Centennial High School sophomore Natasha Williams found out her broadcasting team had qualified for the Business Professionals of America National Conference in Indianapolis, she was ecstatic. The only problem? Scraping up enough money to go. “I need to raise $1,050 in order to go to this conference, and I need to have the funds by (March 19)!” she posted on her GoFundMe profile March 14. “... This is a huge financial struggle for my family and me. I come from a working class family that is unable to fund this trip in such a short amount of time.” In less than two days, 10 people had donated the full amount. Williams is one of many who have turned to the Internet to raise money for a project or venture. In 2012, more than 1 million crowdfunding campaigns raised $2.7 billion. More recent reports show that number grew to $5.1 billion in 2013.* Crowdfunding typically involves creating a profile on a crowdfunding site, explaining your project, setting a monetary goal and asking people to donate. This process has opened the door for people to fund nonprofits, business startups, inventions and, like we see in Williams’ case, educational opportunities. I’ve interviewed many people — from the woman who invented the Dental RAT to the founder of the Red Fred Project — who have used a crowdfunding site to raise money for their endeavor. For Williams, it certainly worked out well.

Utility and bridge work around the interchange is already underway. n $50.8 million: project cost. The project was awarded to Concrete Placing Company of Boise, which came in with the lowest bid. The project is funded through Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds. The bid is about $11 million more than ITD previously slated the project to cost. n Contact: Idaho Transportation Department Public Involvement Coordinator Adam Rush, 334-8119 n Web: More articles about the project at mymeridianpress.com. n

HOW WILL CONSTRUCTION IMPACT YOUR COMMUTE?

The Meridian Road Interchange will not close during construction, but it will be narrowed down to one lane of traffic in each direction. Drivers are encouraged to use another route. Interstate 84 will also be widened during this time. This part of construction will largely take place at night. “For your morning commutes and evening commutes (on I-84), you won’t be impacted,” Idaho Transportation Department spokesman Reed Hollinshead said. There isn’t a specific traffic plan for I-84 yet, he said, but SOURCE: Idaho Transportation Department (2012 data) the crews will try to keep as many lanes open as possible. There’s a possibility the speed limit will be lowered in the construction zone.

CONCUSSIONS CONCUSSIONS

The and symptoms Thevisual visualsigns signs and symptoms

I

t is estimated that 4 to 5 million concussions occur each year, making a concussion the most common type of traumatic brain injury. In children, concussions most often occur during sports performance but have cognitive, emotional, and physical effects that last long after the initial hit to the head. In speaking with Dr. Ryan Johnson, we learned that concussions affect the visual system in several ways. Dr. Johnson is uniquely qualified to care for patients who have suffered a concussion or any other form of acquired brain injury. He is Idaho’s only optometrist with residency training in binocular vision, neuro-optometry and vision therapy. Like many forms of acquired brain injury, concussions can affect how your eyes focus, team and track. When these basic visual skills are not working properly it can create a number of difficulties both on the field and in the classroom. Some of the visual effects of a concussion include:

BLURRED VISION: Depending on your condition, the blurred vision may be intermittent or constant, and can be present at all distances or just when reading or on the computer. DOUBLE VISION: Similar to blurred vision, double vision may be present only some of the time and only at certain distances. Most commonly, double vision following an acquired brain injury will occur at near; during reading or computer work. EYE STRAIN: When the eyes must work to keep the image clear and single, eyestrain or fatigue often results. Many people will describe soreness around their eyes or a headache that seems to be centered between their eyes. READING DIFFICULTIES: Deficiencies in eye focusing, teaming, and tracking can make words come in and out of focus, move on the page, or make the eyes skip lines of text. For many people with concussions, these visual conditions often go undiagnosed. Players are highly motivated to return to play, so they may

under-report the severity of their symptoms. For other children, these difficulties existed before the concussion and they do not associate their worsening symptoms in the classroom with a concussion suffered over the weekend. If you or your child has suffered a concussion, be sure to ask if the eye doctor has residency training in binocular vision, neuro-optometry, and vision therapy. This advanced training allows doctors like Dr. Ryan Johnson to diagnose and treat many of the visual effects of a concussion.

Neuro-Optometrist - Specializing in binocular vision dysfunction, including amblyopia and strabismus, and acquired brain injury in both children and adults. Residency trained in Binocular Vision, Neuro- Optometry and Vision Therapy at University of California, Berkeley.

Centennial coaching fixture resigns The Patriots’ football coach resigns after 26 years and three state championships by Michael Lycklama

mlycklama@idahopress.com © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS

F

or the first time in Centennial High history, Lee Neumann will not walk a sideline

this fall. The Patriots’ football coach resigned Monday, ending a 26-year run at the school that included 24 years at the head of the program, five state championship appearances and three state titles. Neumann said he typically ends a season worn out and then regenerates during the winter. But this

year he didn’t recover, convincing him his time had come. “I’ve been thinking about it for a year,” Neumann said. “I’ve done everything I can do. I’ve had a good career. I’m ready to have some time off with my wife and my daughter.” Neumann, 54, started his coaching career at Murtaugh High after playing defensive back at Idaho State and winning a Division I-AA national title in 1981. He then coached one year as the defensive coordinator and head girls basketball coach at Pocatello High before heading to Centennial when it opened in 1987. He served as an assistant under Greg Drake for two years, then took over and led the program for the past 24 years. He set a model of consistency, compiling a 16883 record and reaching the state semifinals every year

but one between 1996 and 2006. He said his favorite memories include the Patriots’ state titles in 1996, Lee 1999 and 2003, Neumann including an undefeated season in 2003. Notable former players include running back Brock Forsey, whom the Chicago Bears drafted in 2003, and Olympic wrestler Charles Burton, who placed fifth at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. “He’s been the consummate leader,” Centennial athletic director Jon Watson said. “He’s built a very strong tradition of football at Centennial. He’s trained many, many coaches that have gone on and become head coaches and coordinators throughout the conference. And he’s coached kids that have gone on to NFL and have become doc-

tors and Olympians. He’s touched a lot of lives.” Mountain View head coach Judd Benedick stands as one of the limbs on Neumann’s coaching tree. He served as Centennial’s varsity linebackers coach from 2002-2006 and said he learned the level of preparation it takes to succeed from Neumann. Benedick’s feelings about Neumann resigning remain conflicted. He knows Neumann, of all people, deserves a break. But he’s sad to see a Treasure Valley fixture go. “It’s a hit for our valley and the level of football,” Benedick said. “For guys that coached against him or with him, it’s a blow because that’s a guy that’s an Idaho high school legend. His record speaks for itself.” Neumann didn’t close the door on coaching forever. He said he could see himself becoming a head

coach again in the future or helping out as an assistant. He also said he might pursue a job in education administration, a field he earned his master’s degree in. But for now, he said he’s looking forward to a break. “I started playing football when I was 12-yearsold,” Neumann said. “So in those 42 years I’ve either played or coach every year but one. It’d be nice to have the fall off and camp and fish and slow down a little bit.” Watson said Centennial has begun compiling material for the search for its third football coach in school history, and the school won’t rush into a hire. “Our timeline is until it’s filled with the very best person we can find,” Watson said.

Community Center great venue for Parks programs Have you heard, Meridian? We have a community center! Downtown Meridian always holds great surprises, and our community center is full of them! On the corner of 2nd Street and Idaho Avenue, just a block east of Generations Plaza and next to Centennial Park, stands the Meridian Community Center. The building is a dedicated space for Parks and Rec activities and classes ranging in variety and spanning all age groups from toddlers to senior citizens. Over the course of the 2013 calendar year, the Meridian Community Center was home to over 650 class offerings, including a variety of dance forms, tumbling, art, preschool fun, zumba, yoga, day camps, wellness education and music lessons, among many others. These classes drew more than 3,300 registrations, and if you add in proud parents watching their children in cheerleader or mar-

tial arts training, the Meridian Community Center sees about 400 to 450 visitors per week. In the April 18 publication of this newspaper, the 2014 Parks and Recreation Activity Guide for spring/summer will be included for all your summer adventure planning! The Meridian Community Center will be buzzing with activities all summer long, and other recreational opportunities will be included for summer camps, golf and tennis lessons, summer events and adult sports happening all around Meridian! April 13-19 is National Library Week. We have exciting events and library programs planned for the upcoming year. “Venturing out” is a challenge we’re meeting with renewed enthusiasm. We recently welcomed Audra Green as our new outreach coordinator. Audra is working not only to expand our bookmobile services to home-bound residents and care facilities, but also to move some programs that were traditionally kept inside library walls (book clubs, story times, technology classes, etc.) out into local businesses and public spaces. With that goal in mind, we could think of no better way to celebrate National Library Week with our community than to host a food

truck rally in downtown Meridian. We hope you’ll join us from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at Meridian City Hall. Our bookmobile will be there, and we’ll have information about all of our upcoming events. The real draw, of course, will be the food. At least seven trucks from the Boise Food Truck Rally (coordinated by Payette Brewing Co.) will fill the parking lot with their delicious aromas. We’ve challenged them to create book-themed fare in honor of National Library Week. Local band Hillfolk Noir will perform throughout the evening. n

Greg Likins is a part of the adult services and programs team at the Meridian Library.
