ore than 90 percent of Meridian residents see the city as a good or excellent place to live, according to newly released survey results by ETC Institute. Answers by more than 500 residents gauge how Meridian is doing with things like city services, job development, safety, recreation and transportation. Overall, the results were very positive, ETC project manager Jason Morado told the City Council on Tuesday. Meridian ranked above the national average in 49 of 54 categories. Nine out of 10 residents gave Meridian good scores for its quality of life, family-friendly environment, public safety and parks. But this shouldn’t surprise you: people here are not fans of the traffic. Only 37 percent of respondents gave positive ratings to Meridian’s management of traffic flow and congestion. These growing pains are common in rapidly developing cities, Morado said. Moving forward, the survey suggests that Meridian’s top

TRENDING 3 Dog park construction pushed to next year

Meridian City Council voted Tuesday to not make a budget amendment for a proposed 2-acre, $1.56 million dog park at Storey Park, which a citizens committee helped design. That means the dog park request will go through the normal budget process this summer, delaying construction until next spring. The city’s temporary “Bark Park” at the police station closed in January to make room for expansions. The council’s opinion about the immediate need for a dog park is fractured, and the motion passed 3-2. See next week’s issue for more details.

Residents in 17 Idaho counties, including Ada, can estimate their 2014 property taxes by visiting the Idaho State Tax Commission’s website at tax.idaho.gov. The “Quick Picks” section on the home page links to a calculator that allows taxpayers to estimate what they will owe, using information from their property tax assessment. The estimate may not include all voter-approved taxing district levies, and it doesn’t include fees (such as solid waste, forest protection) that may be billed on tax notices. Actual tax amounts will be determined after cities counties, and other taxing districts set their budgets in late summer.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans 5 Idaho stores

Idaho’s first Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a fast-casual restaurant franchise, is coming to Meridian this fall at the intersection of Eagle Road and Lanark Street. This will be the first of five Freddy’s stores slated to open this year in Idaho. The menu includes lean-beef steakburgers, Vienna beef hot dogs and signature desserts made with freshly-churned frozen custard. “Freddy’s brings to life the America of the late 1940s and early 1950s, a post-war era of pride and values focusing on quality family time,” franchise operator Brad Williams said in a statement. The Meridian location is set to hire 60 people and is on track to open in September or October. Later in the year, Freddy’s in Nampa, Caldwell, Idaho Falls and Pocatello are scheduled to open.

Google announces national Doodle 4 Google winner

Google announced the winners of its Doodle 4 Google contest Monday, which a Meridian student had his hopes on winning. An 11-year-old from New York took the grand prize with her design of a transformative water purifier (visit bit.ly/Doodlewinners). She received a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for her school, according to the contest website. Google also donated $40,000 in her name to charity: water to provide clean water to schools in Bangladesh. The theme for this year’s contest was “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place.” Meridian Technical Charter High School junior Justin Whitehead’s design of a spray that made vegetables taste like dessert took first place in Idaho. Last month, Whitehead and the other 49 state finalists got to tour the Googleplex, Google’s headquarters in California.

But when we have to do something like this and we have to rely on each other, there’s no other greater feeling than knowing that your brother is right beside you — and you’re kicking butt at the same time.” Grady, 29, navigates the river course, while Shay, 26, drives the boat, gliding over rapids and reaching speeds of 87 mph. ince starting the Idaho Songwriters Association four years ago, musician Steve Eaton has been blown away time and time again by people who he never would have guessed were harboring so much talent — people who clock in from 9 to 5 and don’t really have an outlet for their passion. “It’s mind-boggling how many good players are here, … people I’ve never even heard of,” Eaton said. “They’re just looking for a place to play. The week-long bovine bash begins at 7 p.m. Monday with the yearly Princess Pageant, and continues all week with events such as car races, a pancake feed, a pool party, a 5K race, a parade, a carnival and, of course, dairy cattle and goat shows. parks together. A map can be found at parksandrecreation. idaho.gov/find-a-park-by-map. 2. Pick up some beer Treat your dad to some great craft brews from Brewforia, 3030 E. Overland Road, or treat him to beer brewed right here in Meridian at Slanted Rock Brewing Company, 2374 E. Cinema Drive. 3. Give the gift of caffeine Being a dad takes a lot of

energy, so help keep him awake through all of those practices, recitals and the daily grind with a gift card to a local coffee shop. Check out the Coffee Studio, 6360 N. Saguaro Hills Ave. 4. Get tickets to the Idaho Shakespeare Festival Pack a picnic and take your dad to see a classic on stage. This year’s lineup includes “Deathtrap,” which is described as “cunningly clever and comi-

cally twisted,” and the comedy “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” Visit idahoshakespeare.org for tickets, show times and information. 5. Spend some family time at Fast Lane Kids who are age 8 and older can come along for a fun day at Fast Lane Indoor Kart Racing, where your dad can take a few spins around the track. genres are blue grass, jazz, folk and Americana. About 150 Idaho musicians have been involved, O’Hara said. The Village is the group’s first big Meridian stage. “One of our goals at The Village is to identify people in Meridian who like the kinds of music that we’re presenting,” O’Hara said. Those who like what they hear can join the association’s mailing list, which started out with a handful of recipients four years ago and now reaches about 5,000. “It’s just been awesome,” Eaton said. “This whole thing started with me sending out 15 to 20 emails to some friends that I know, writers and musicians that live around here.” Eaton, who has written hits for the likes of Art Garfunkel and The Carpenters, was trying to recreate the environment he found while living in Nashville. Songwriters would sit around each others’ living rooms and pass around a guitar or two “People would take turns playing the song they were working on,” he said. The first Idaho Songwriters Association event in 2010 was a gathering of about 50 musicians at a cafe in Eagle. “It just took off from there,” Eaton said, “and the response was so good that we never looked back. We started doing it once a month.” The group gained nonprofit status earlier this year. The monthly Riverside concerts are open to songwriters and listeners alike. “It’s very entertaining for the audience because you really get the appreciation for the wide range of talents in Boise, Idaho,” O’Hara said. “I’ve been to almost all of these events, and I usually just go away awestruck.”

ifteen new homes in 15 years. That’s the impact of Joint School District No. 2’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Each year for the past 15 years, high school students in the construction, masonry and digital home technology classes have built a home for a family in need. The latest house, finished May 30, is now home to Asam Mujili and his family, who are refugees from Iraq. The family fled Iraq and lived in Jordan before relocating to the U.S. in 2010. The couple has a baby on the way. “A home equals country to us,” Asam said in a statement. “If you have a home, then you have a country — a place to be … a place in the world.” The students who build the homes are in classes ofby Holly Beech fered through the ADA Prohbeech@mymeridianpress.com fessional-Technical Center. © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS The students’ work has earned national recognition — landing them in fourth place last year in the nation in the SkillsUSA competition in the community service category. The team will showcase the new Habitat for Humanity home in this year’s competition, which takes place later this month in Kansas City, Missouri. Twelve other students from the district will also compete in various categories. “I would love to see those kids get on the podium,” construction teacher Mark Enger said. Twenty-eight students from across the district helped build the 1,400-square-foot home, only receiving outside help on the electrical, plumbing and HVAC elements. The house has four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and an attached garage. The digital tech students worked on the home’s wiring and the masonry students completed the brick work on the front of the home — giving it beautiful curbside appeal, Enger said.

PLUGGED IN in your words

Ten ways to lower your risk of chronic inflammation Inflammation is generally our bodies’ healthy and natural response to healing from irritants like muscle pain, the flu or a sore throat. This type of acute inflammation comes on quickly and is gone within a few days. But chronic inflammation is different. Health professionals call it the “hidden” inflammation, and it can last for months or even years without a person being aware. In recent years, research is suggesting that chronic inflammation may be the root cause of many diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, heart disease and even depression. The foods we eat have a direct impact on promoting or protecting against inflammation. Diets high in refined starches, sugars,

saturated fats, trans fats and low in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and omega 3 fatty acids actually turn on the inflammatory response. Here is a list of food and lifestyle recommendations you can use to best protect yourself against chronic, disease-promoting inflammation. 1. Increase intake of foods that are high in flavonoids. Examples are richly colored fruits and vegetables, green tea, black tea, oolong tea, dark chocolate, berries, red wine and grapes. 2. Limit refined grains and sugars. Examples are white bread, white pasta, white rice, cookies and pastries. 3. Increase consumption of omega 3 fatty acids. Examples are fish, especially fatty fish like

salmon and sardines, ground flax seeds, chia seeds and walnuts. 4. Avoid all trans-fat and limit saturated fat. Examples of foods with trans fats are fried foods and pre-made shelf stable pastries. Saturated fats include high-fat dairy and fatty meats such as bacon and sausage. 5. Increase consumption of lean protein, such as skinless poultry, fish and wild game. 6. Cook with olive oil or canola oil instead of vegetable or corn oil.

7. Drink lots of water. Women should drink two liters of water per day and men three liters. 8. Lower your stress. Practice individualized stress management therapies. 9. Exercise daily. Find an activity that you like and aim for 30 minutes a day. 10. Get at least seven hours of sleep per night. Practice good sleep habits like going to bed and waking at the same time every day, keeping your room cool, and limiting screen time before bed.

UP & DOWN People that run red lights! It seems to be getting worse. Drivers who don’t yield right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks! People on their phones texting that can’t keep their cars between the lines. Animal Control and the MPD for their efforts in enforcing the ‘dogs must be leashed’ law at Kleiner Park. It’s so much better than it was a couple of months ago. Texting while driving and then they blow through red lights. Cherry and Linder is getting really bad!

Leadership Meridian program gives unique business perspective

There seems to be a lot of children around with no respect for others lately.

Leadership programs are a part of chambers of commerce all across the country. They present an amazing opportunity for our up-and-coming leaders as well as those who see themselves in a leadership role eventually. The goal of a leadership program is to develop a network of informed citizens prepared to assume expanding leadership roles in our community. It provides an opportunity for learning about the challenges facing the community. It’s an ideal program for those who are interested in becoming more involved in the community, who want to gain the tools to make informed decisions and who want to improve their leadership skills. Knowledge is a key element and motivator of leadership. The chamber leadership program

Increased traffic on Meridian Road between Cherry Lane and Ustick.

provides knowledge that is not readily available through other opportunities. Chamber programs open the back door to many businesses, civic and community entities, and you get to view them from a completely different prospective. Leadership Meridian acquaints participants with the processes, programs and problems that currently exist within the community. It stimulates interest in community activities and encourages participation in local affairs. It provides a multitude of community resources that cannot be gained elsewhere. It familiarizes emerging leaders with one another and with the community’s current business and civic leadership. Participants develop and refine leadership skills and create lasting bonds with other

upcoming leaders. The program is recognized by businesses, employers and decision makers as an important part of a leader’s preparation to serve in our community. Businesses show their support of the program by their commitment to its financial stability. The Meridian program is a two-year commitment. The class meets one day a month for the first year, offering nine full days of learning about all aspects of Meridian and many encompassing the Treasure Valley. Lectures, discussions, panels and field trips make up the format of the sessions. Each year a variety of the top leaders of Meridian offer their insights to current situa-

tions. Experts in their field share their views on current public issues. The second year, the participants help plan the program. The quality of a community’s future is determined by the quality of its public and private sector leadership. The Meridian Chamber has made a commitment to help facilitate an opportunity where future leaders can help gain the skills to help move our community forward. For more information on the Leadership Meridian program, check on line at www.meridianchamber. org or email Betsy@meridianchamber.org.

Anne Little Roberts is the executive director of the Meridian Chamber of Commerce and can be reached at anne@meridianchamber.org.

WHAT’S BETTER THAN BREAKFAST FOR DINNER?

Amanda L. Smith/For the Meridian Press

Meridian High graduate Nic Bowens, left, a Utah State junior, took seventh in his 100-meter semifinal and 17th overall at the NCAA Track & Field Championships on June 11 at the University of Oregon.

M

eridian High alum and Utah State junior Nic Bowens finished seventh in his 100-meter heat and 17th overall at the NCAA Track & Field Championship semifinals June 11 in Eugene, Oregon. The 2011 Meridian grad finished his semifinal in 10.268 seconds, 0.139 seconds shy of the last of eight

qualifiers for the finals. His time also left him .002 second shy of second-team allAmerican honors. “I feel like it could have gone better,” Bowens said. “It’s tough to run in lane eight a little bit. My start was good. My drive phase was good. I just couldn’t hold on the last 40 meters. I wasn’t as strong as I was.” Bowens said he was in the thick of his heat for the first 40 meters before fading at the end. The trip was the junior’s first to the national cham-

pionships at the University of Oregon. He said the atmosphere at Hayward Field was electric. “I had pretty bad nerves even going onto the track before I even got into blocks,” Bowens said. “People are screaming, yelling, cameras are in your face. It’s a good feeling, but it’s a little scary in the moment.” While he came up short, Bowens said he’s satisfied with where he ended the season. And with another year of eligibility left, he wants to return next year.

Three locals picked in MLB draft Three graduates of the Meridian School District had their names called June 7 in the MLB draft. The Philadelphia Phillies picked Centennial High graduate Chase Harris in the 14th round with the 412nd overall pick. The Cincinnati Reds selected Rocky Mountain High grad Isaac Anderson in the 19th

round with the 575th overall pick. And the Chicago Cubs nabbed Eagle High alum Andrew Ely in the 32nd round with the 949th overall pick. Harris was an AllMountain West first-team outfielder for New Mexico, leading the team with a .377 average, eight home runs and 63 RBIs.

Anderson, a right-handed pitcher, posted a 3.90 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 60 innings for the College of Southern Idaho. Kansas City selected him in the 34th round last year, but he did not sign. Ely, a junior second baseman for the University of Washington, was named All-Pac-12 this season.

School district to ask voters for $104M bond J oint School District No. 2 trustees approved Tuesday a $104 million bond request that will go before voters Aug. 26. It’s the first time in nine years the district has asked for a bond, which pays for things such as new schools and land acquisition. But it will be the second time this year that voters are asked to pass a levy for the district. In March, voters renewed a twoyear, $14 million supplemental levy that helps pay for staff and school days. The bond needs 66 percent of the votes to pass. The supplement levy only passed with 60 percent. “That’s a very high bar,” district spokesman Eric Exline said. “I just think people have forgotten that this by Holly Beech hbeech@mymeridianpress.com is what you have to do to © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS keep up.” The district, which is 620-students over capacity at the middle school level, is growing by more than 500 students a year. The requested bond would pay for two new middle schools, a new elementary school, land acquisition and the rest of the Meridian High School renovation, speeding up the process by three years. These were the top priorities recommended by the bond committee, made up of parents and school representatives. Earlier this year, the district’s deputy superintendent, Bruce Gestrin, said the bond proposal would probably be $80 million. The amount increased, Exline said, because of how much enrollment is expected to grow and because, with rising market values, the

In the next budget year, the levy rate — which includes the supplemental, bond and plant facilities levies — is expected to be $399 per $100,000 of taxable market value, a decrease of $39, Exline said.
