Public transit can be a ‘lifeline’ for community members

D

id you see the news? Meridian is getting a Saturday bus route, slated to begin Aug. 30. The route will hit popular spots like Settlers Park, Roaring Springs, downtown Meridian and The Village. The news is exciting. Meridian is a big city without its own bus route; only two routes hit Meridian on their way between Nampa and Boise on weekdays. More good news: Meridian’s new Saturday route has a $0 fare for the first year. But I was a little sad to see that the route, at least in its latest draft form, doesn’t have stops at either Meridian Library branch. Seems like transportation to the library would be useful for students, for library patrons trying to cut down on driving and for community members who can’t drive or don’t have a vehicle. After a conducting a quick investigation on Google maps, I feel a little better. The bus stop at Linder Road and Cherry Lane is only 0.2 miles — a four-minute walk — from the library’s main branch on Cherry Lane. The Silverstone branch is a little more than a half mile away from a bus stop, about a 12-minute walk. As Meridian’s transportation system grows, access to the library should be a priority. Meridian Library District Director Gretchen Caserotti is thrilled that Meridian is making progress with public transit, but she said it would be great to see a bus stop at the library in the future. “There are people in need who use the library resources not as a luxury, but as a necessity, and they tend to be people who don’t have a lot of fiscal resources. So in most cities, public transportation is a lifeline for them to get to the library, to apply for jobs, to do their school work, to do whatever

it is that they need to be doing,” she said. Access to convenient public transportation is also important for Meridian’s aging residents. I was reminded of that this week while interviewing retired folks for the cover story. “I’ll tell you another thing you don’t think about until you get to be about our age,” Touchmark resident Tom Schornak told me, “and that is, someday, somebody’s going to come up to you and say, ‘You can’t drive anymore.’” Touchmark at Meadow Lake Village, a by Holly Beech large retirement community, provides bus hbeech@mymeridianpress.com trips to grocery stores, local events and © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS tourist destinations. Also, the Meridian Senior Center operates a van that provides busing for weekday lunches and community events. I learned this week that Valley Regional Transit — which runs local transportation — and Treasure Valley Transit in Nampa hope to expand senior transportation options. They’re trying to create schedule-in-advance bus trips that would serve a network of senior centers in the area. Community members can also lend a hand through VRT’s volunteer driver program. Meridian seeks Planning and Zoning commissioner

The City of Meridian is looking to fill a vacancy on its Planning and Zoning Commission. This five-person commission advises Meridian City Council on things like land use, zoning, transportation and housing issues, as framed by Meridian’s Comprehensive Plan. The commission meets the first and third Thursday of every month, and commissioners serve six-year terms. Applicants must have lived in Ada County for two years and within Meridian’s area of impact for at least one year. Members are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by a majority City Council vote. Those interested in the position should send a letter of interest and resume to Mayor Tammy de Weerd at Meridian City Hall (33 E. Broadway Avenue, Suite 300, Meridian, ID 83642) by Aug. 22. View a map of Meridian’s area of impact at bit.ly/PZcommission.

Sheriff’s deputies begin using on-body cameras

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office is now using on-body cameras to document deputies’ interactions with the public — making it the first law enforcement agency in Ada County to adopt the technology, according to spokesman Patrick Orr. Five deputies were outfitted with Taser Axon body cameras last week. More deputies will be outfitted with the cameras over the next year, in groups of five. By the end of the rollout, 70 deputies will have the cameras. For more details on the program, visit the new Ada County Sheriff’s Office blog at adasheriffblog.wordpress.com.

F

orbes recently highlighted the Boise-Meridian area as one of the nation’s best places to retire. The report points to the area’s dry climate, low crime rate, good economy, affordable housing and high rankings for walkability, bicycling and volunteering. Also, Idaho’s affordability and quality of life gained the state a spot on Bankrate. com’s list of the 10 best states for retirement. But the reports can’t quantify one factor that, in talking with Meridian retirees, seems to be the biggest pull: family. Dena Hughes’ moved to Meridian from the Washington coast last year to live near her son after her husband died. “My son was an air traffic by Holly Beech controller at hbeech@mymeridianpress.com the Boise tower © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS for 25 years, and they raised both their daughters here,” she said. Her granddaughters are grown up now, raising kids of their own and working as a nurse and elementary school teacher in Meridian. “They love it, they wouldn’t live anywhere else, I don’t think,” Hughes said. Tom and Gail Schornak, who moved to Meridian from Alaska nine months ago, have a similar story. Their daughter studied nursing at Boise State University and has worked at St. Luke’s for the last 18 years. “We would always come back in the summertime and maybe a trip in the fall, so we knew Boise,” Tom Schornak said. “When it came time to make a move, that’s what we did. She talked us into it.” Hughes and the Schornaks both chose to move into the Touchmark at Meadow Lake Village retirement community, which spans 100 acres and houses about 400 residents. Touchmark Executive Director Matt Hoskin estimates that about half of the residents are from out of state. “They’re moving from out of state to be close to family, typically,” he said. He often finds that parents are following their kids who found a job in Meridian or Boise.

Demand rises for health care, diverse housing Idaho has the third-fastest growing senior population in the country, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging. The num-

ber of Idahoans age 65 or older grew by 33 percent from 2000 to 2010. “We’re seeing Idaho as a popular place for retirees,” Idaho Department of Labor Chief Research Officer Bob Uhlenkott said.

Kipp is an 8-year-old neutered male German shorthair pointer. He is house trained and up to date with shots. Quite the handsome fellow, this guy would be eye candy in almost any pickup truck. Kipp is independent but respectful of his handler, he knows to sit and is definitely smart so should be workable and trainable with proper motivation. He’s OK on lead but much prefers to patrol an area on his own terms. Kipp enjoys attention and is especially fond of a good scratch from his chest up to his chin. This fellow should be a good fit in most families with an active lifestyle who are willing and able to include a four-legged companion. His behavior with cats and other dogs is unknown but from our observation at the rescue he doesn’t appear aggressive. Stop by soon to meet Kipp. His adoption fee is $85. Valley Corvettes to participate in Idaho 16 ribbon-cutting Twenty-five years ago, a group of Corvette enthusiasts organized Valley Corvettes, which now has 170 members who participate in local parades and car shows and raise money for charities. After the Idaho Highway 16 ribbon-cutting, which starts at 10:16 a.m. Aug. 15, Valley Corvettes members will give rides to the event speakers, elected officials and community leaders, who will be the first to cross the new bridge. In the last decade, Valley Corvettes, along with sister clubs in Twin Falls and Idaho Falls, donated $230,000 generated from the sale of the Idaho “Corvette” Specialty license plate to Idaho Children’s Charities. (The Highway 16 extension) definitely will help with folks commute-wise, and commerce, just having an alternate route where you don’t have to make a big loop to get where you’re going.” REED HOLLINSHEAD ITD spokesman

Next week’s ribbon-cutting only celebrates part of the bigger picture. The overall goal is to build Highway 16 the rest of the way to Interstate 84, four miles from Chinden Boulevard. This Highway 16 corridor would provide a convenient connection from scenic mountain areas toward McCall to the wine regions of Canyon County, Meridian Community Development Director Bruce Chatterton said. The corridor is also an important piece to some industrial developments Meridian is working on. The city hired consultants to complete a “Fields District” study and an economic development study to gauge where Meridian’s focus should be. Study results showed Meridian would do well to promote agritourism, an agricultural innovation center (like what a business incubator is for tech companies), and a housing development that centers around a community farm. “It’s possible that many of those things could happen without 16 being completed, but I think that 16 would complement them and help make them possible,” Chatterton said. But building Highway 16 out to the interstate would cost about $500 million, and right now there’s no funding source for that, Hollinshead said. Therefore, there’s no timetable for when the project could start. Legislators have tried to find alternative funding sources, he said, similar to the GARVEE — or Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle — Transportation Program. This revenue is a type of bond that the state will pay back over time with future federal-aid highway dollars. But the current GARVEE program, which paid for $938 million worth of road projects in the last nine years, is coming to an end.

With the opening of the Idaho Highway 16 extension, some access to McDermott Road will be restricted to prevent disruptive traffic to local residents. Southbound traffic from the new Highway 16 alignment cannot continue to McDermott.

L

inder and Eagle roads are the only roads in Meridian that cross the Boise River. But when the new Idaho Highway 16 extension from State Street to Chinden Boulevard opens next week, Linder and Eagle should see some relief, Idaho Transportation Department spokesman Reed Hollinshead said. The new, 2.5 mile stretch of Highway 16, also called the “Emmett Highway,” stretches north to south between Linder and Star roads. It will be western Ada County’s first new river crossing in more than two decades. The Linder Road crossing opened in 1993. ITD expects 22,000 drivers will use the new Highway 16 bridge each day, initially. The speed limit will be 65 mph. “That definitely will help with folks commute-wise, and commerce, just having an alternate route where you don’t have to make a big loop to get where you’re going,” Hollinshead said. “And one of the big deals is for emergency reby Holly Beech sponse and shaving a few extra minhbeech@mymeridianpress.com utes from a response time.” The extension will open to the © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS public Aug. 15 after a ribbon-cutting, which is scheduled for 10:16 a.m. The Central Valley Expressway Coalition, a group that promotes the economic benefits of extending Highway 16, is hosting the event. ITD has planned the project for almost 10 years, and construction began more than two years ago. The final price tag is $111.1 million, including $39 million for construction. Other expenses, all funded through the state’s GARVEE bond program, were engineering and environmental studies and land purchases.

Le Peep restaurant hatches in Meridian

629-0155

L

e Peep was founded in Aspen, Colorado, 45 years ago to provide hearty and healthy meals to skiers. Since then, the restaurant has spread to more than 50 locations, gaining a reputation in many cities as the best place to go for breakfast and lunch. Meridian is now in on the action, as a Le Peep has opened on the corner of Eagle and Ustick roads. Since by Holly Beech opening in May, the restaurant has been so popular that hbeech@mymeridianpress.com local owners Jeffrey and Tamara Hall have pushed back © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS the grand opening celebration to Sept. 10. They serve a niche market, Jeffrey Hall said — people of all ages looking for fresh, healthy food in a contemporary environment. It doesn’t feel like a diner or a fast-food restaurant, he said. On the menu, for example, is the Colorado omelet, which is made with egg whites, lean smoked turkey, avocado, tomatoes, bacon crumbles and mozzarella cheese. There are also a lot of gluten-free options. “In this area especially, people love good breakfast places, and they’re getting away from fast food,” Jeffrey said. “This area was very underserved.” Being on the second-busiest intersection in the state doesn’t hurt, either. The proximity to growing neighborhoods, community activities, Settlers Park and St. Luke’s all played into the Halls’ choice of location. In coming years, the Halls plan to open six more Le Peep restaurants in Idaho, starting with Parkcenter Boulevard in Boise and then 12th Avenue Road in Nampa. As Le Peep licensees, the

FAMILYHUB Race to Embrace MERIDIAN — When Sherrie Hulet and Cherine Montie journeyed to Guatemala in 2001, they intended to improve the lives of the Guatemalan people any way they could. Fueled by the love and acceptance they were shown in Guatemala, Hulet and Montie founded the Guatemala Embrace Effort, hoping to promote quality education and better nutrition and health for Guatemalan children. In order to raise money for GEE, they want to promote better health for Meridian, too. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the Race to Embrace Family Fun Run will feature at 5K and a 1-mile walk/run. The event will also include free Zumba, dance and karate classes. Registration is free for everyone 5 and under. For

Halls can use the restaurant’s brand, logo and menu, and they have more control over things like restaurant design than a franchisee would. Another licensee owns a Le Peep restaurant in Coeur d’Alene. The new Meridian restaurant can seat 143 people inside and 24 people on the patio. It opened up 29 new jobs in the area and attracted cooks who have worked for Berryhill & Co. and Steve’s Cafe. With so many new restaurants in the Valley, finding quality cooks is a challenge, Jeffrey said. But the Halls are no strangers to the challenges that come with owning a business. They’ve owned businesses in Meridian for 14 years (currently they own Harks Corner Carwash). Jeffrey also works in commercial real estate, and Le Peep is more of Tamara’s “baby,” he said. When asked what they do in their free time, the Halls glanced at each other as if to say, “What free time?” They work long days but love to travel, so they take a trip every few months. They have three kids, ages 21, 16 and 5. The couple moved to Idaho — Jeffrey’s from Oregon, and Tamara’s from California — to raise their family. “(You) couldn’t pick a better place to raise kids,” Jeffrey said.

GOFIVE those older than 5, the cost is $10 for the 1-mile walk/run and $25 for the 5K. All proceeds go to the Guatemala Embrace Effort. For information or to register, visit embraceeffort.org.

Have a family picnic MERIDIAN — Coolwater Creek Event Center wants to start a summer tradition: a free fishing day and family picnic at its Ol’West Town. They’ll host the event for the first time from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the event center, 7355 S. Eagle Road. Families are encouraged to bring fishing gear and bait and enjoy a barbecue lunch, catch-and-release fishing, kids’ games, a bounce house, horseshoes and volleyball. Tickets are $14 for adults, $8 for kids ages 4-10 and free for kids 3 and under. Bring a nonperishable food item, too. Coolwater will be filling a wagon at the event with donations for The Idaho Foodbank.

There are still a couple more weeks of summer vacation left for Meridian students. Before your kids go back to class, make sure you fit in some summer activities. Here are five ideas as summer break comes to a close. 1. Go to Roaring Springs If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new slides at Roaring Springs Water Park, set aside some time to get there. The park debuted the Corkscrew Cavern, a 360-degree looping water slide, this summer. 2. Watch a movie in the park There are three chances left to watch a movie at Settlers Park for CableOne movie night. “The Nut Job” will be shown Aug. 15, “Planes” will play Aug. 22 and “The Lego Movie” will wrap up the series Aug. 29. 3. Plan to head to the fair The Western Idaho Fair starts Aug. 15 and runs through Aug. 24. Have fun at the carnival, see the animals and enjoy the kinds of food that only the fair would fry. 4. Catch a Boise Hawks game Baseball is an American pastime and a summertime tradition. The Boise Hawks will be home Aug. 25-31. Even though it’s after

the start of school, it’s still summertime and still fun. 5. Watch a play at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival Speaking of traditions, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival provides a fun way to enjoy the Bard’s work in an outdoor setting. This month, check out “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” a comedy described as one of Shakespeare’s funniest masterpieces. Visit idahoshakespeare.org for ticket information and show times.

LOCAL NEWS

Bridging cultures with a cup of coffee C “

rafting a good cup o’ joe, after a little practice, becomes a form of art. Nineteen-year-old Ashley Hunter of Meridian is taking her passion for making coffee — along with her desire to help others — to Sweden in September, where she will open a coffeehouse and an art gallery with her aunt. “Our main goal is to provide a cultural and societal place where people can go and they can be themselves and they can feel loved,” Hunter, a 2013 Mountain View High ASHLEY HUNTER School graduate, said. “Our main point is to build relationships.” Hunter has learned over the past year just how conducive coffee shops are to relationship building. From November to May, she worked at Groove Coffee in Meridian, where she got to know her regular customers on a personal level. by Holly Beech “I had this one gentleman who was … homeless, and hbeech@mymeridianpress.com he would come in every Friday night and ask for a piece of © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS paper, and he would write poems,” Hunter said. The man quit smoking the first day he came in, and he left a poem with Hunter called “The Smoker’s Prayer.” She hung it on the Groove’s bulletin board. “Another older gentleman,” Hunter continued, “he said, ‘You know, Ashley, God put you in my life at a really good time. Because right after I came to this shop and met you was a week after my wife had died, and you were here to encourage me and care about me.’” Hunter paused, reflecting on the memory. “Who knew a cup of coffee could bring people together?” she said. Hunter’s not quite sure what to expect in Sweden. The culture, from what she has learned from her aunt, leans toward individualism and away from religion — two traits that are far from Hunter’s personality. She’s not sure what her new customers will think of her big, “boisterous” personality. “I’m really nervous also that I will offend people with how loud I am or ... how passionate I am,” Hunter said. “My goal is to just listen and love people. ... I think the greatest learning experience that God has in store for me is to just listen and be humble before people.” The cafe will be called Arrie Kulturhus, which means “Culture House.” Though it doesn’t have any specific church ties, the cafe is a nonprofit that is supported by churches in the United States and short-term mission teams, who have traveled to Sweden to help with the renovation. Disappointingly, Hunter was not able to obtain the year-long visa she had hoped for, so she’ll temporarily return to the states after three months in Sweden. She then plans to travel to Christian churches of all backgrounds to seek support for the cafe. “We’re not making money except to actually make us function and help us run,” she said. “A lot of what we have helping us is people sponsoring us and volunteers.” If the cafe gains enough support and momentum, Hunter hopes to plant more of them with her aunt. The two are also planning on renovating a barn by the cafe to be used as missionary housing. “I always knew I was going to go into ministry, but I never knew what form of ministry,” said Hunter, whose dad and brother are pastors. “This is such a unique form of ministry that really encompasses my passion.”

Nineteen-yearold Ashley Hunter of Meridian is taking her passion for making coffee to Sweden in September, where she will open a coffeehouse and an art gallery with her aunt. After graduating from Mountain View High School in 2013, Hunter attended Northwest Nazarene University for a year to study communications science and Christian ministry.

Gliege 2nd, Nist makes cut at Big I Eagle High’s Josh Gliege in second place after two days at national golf tournament

E

agle High’s Josh Gliege held on to second place at the boys Big “I” National Championship on Aug. 6 despite weather suspending play twice, and Bishop Kelly’s Haley Nist made the cut in the girls field at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The weather couldn’t slow Gliege though. He shot 1-under 71 after opening the tournament with a 3-under 69 to trail the leader, Keenan Huskey of Greenville, South Carolina, by one stroke. The boys finished their second round Aug. 7 and made their cuts after the Meridian Press’ deadline. Columbia High’s Greg Law completed his second round with a 6-over 78, putting him at 10-over 154 and in a tie for 43rd place. The girls tournament completed its second round before weather struck, and Nist, a Meridian native, made the cut by one stroke. She shot a 1-over 73 to bounce back from an opening-day 84. She sat at 13-over in a tie for 23rd, 18 shots behind the leader.

Patriots’ Chavez 1-1 at Greco-Roman Worlds WRESTLING: Centennial High graduate Jon Jay Chavez finished his trip to the FILA Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, with a 1-1 record Aug. 5. Chavez, who competed in the 163-pound division, beat Poland’s David Klimek 7-2 to open the tournament. But the Cornell signee then fell to Russia’s Vlad Mariea 3-0.

Rangers second at DoubleA state tournament LEGION BASBEBALL: The Meridian Rangers took home second place Aug. 3 at the Double-A American Legion baseball state tournament after falling 5-2 to the Boise Gems in the championship game. The Rangers (33-11) lost their opening game at the state tournament in Lewiston but rallied with four straight wins in elimination games to reach the finals. The Rangers needed to beat the Gems twice to capture the state title and a berth in the regional tournament. Meridian opened the championship game with a 2-0 lead after the first inning. But Boise rallied with a five-run third inning for the win. The victory earns the Gems (35-11) their 10th state title and a date with

the Missoula Mavericks (52-22), the Montana champion, in the first round of the regional tournament in Eugene, Oregon. Tyler Hollingsworth went 8 for 24 with four doubles and five RBIs in the tournament to lead the Rangers. Chase Labbe finished 10 for 21 with a double and four RBIs, Talon Kreft went 10 for 23 with four RBIs and Nathan Pena went 9 for 17 with a double and seven RBIs. The Mountain View Toros also qualified for the state tournament and lost their first two games to end the season 16-19. Auggie Francis led the Toros with a 3-for-6 tournament that included a double and an RBI.

LOCAL NEWS The Meridian Senior Center moved from its downtown location two years ago to a new, larger space in Kleiner Park. The move attracted several more members from Boise who live just a few minutes away. Holly Beech/MP

Retire Continued from page 1 Because retirees tend to consume more services than durable goods, they create more service jobs, he said. Groups from Touchmark, for example, often take trips to grocery stores, restaurants, theaters and concerts. An aging population also boosts the need for health care professionals. Health care is one of Meridian’s core industries and a top priority for future growth, Meridian Community Development Director Bruce Chatterton said. This year, the city hired research firm Pegasus Planning and Development to identify which industries Meridian should pursue and promote. Three of Pegasus’ seven recommendations were health-care related. “So having ... medical facilities like St. Luke’s and the other clinics is really important in not just attracting seniors but being able to serve the seniors that are here now,” Chatterton said. Creating diverse, multi-generation-

al housing is another area of focus, he said. More downtown housing and apartments, for example, would attract young professionals and retirees alike. Small starter homes in neighborhoods are great for new couples and for retiring couples who are looking to downsize. “I keep hearing seniors say that they’re interested in not being segmented, … (but) in being part of a community, being volunteers, being able to have pathways, especially for pedestrian and cycling opportunities,” Chatterton said. “And so a lot of the things that we’re doing right now in terms of creating a healthy community — pushing for greater connectivity of pathways, creating neighborhood parks and community centers, and always redoubling our efforts to being as diverse housing as we can be, ... those are things that benefit seniors.” Housing options downtown, however, are lacking, he said. But that could change soon, as a developer is looking into building new townhouses on Third Street in downtown Meridian.

writers’ group, family get-togethers, wine tasting, trips to the Starlight Mountain Theatre, live music at the Touchmark lodge — there’s more than enough to keep her busy. “Try keeping up with it, plus playing bingo two days a week!” she said. The community at Touchmark is a tight-knit one, she said. That’s also what you’ll find during the week at the Meridian Senior Center, which moved from downtown Meridian to Kleiner Park a couple years ago. Bingo draws in new people every Friday night, and Wednesday night dance lessons are growing in popularity. The center has more than 400 members. A bus picks members up for lunch every weekday and also takes groups on outings and trips. “People just get bored sitting at home watching TV, and a lot of them don’t have anyone to talk to,” senior center receptionist Connie Eagar said. Friendships are what Darylene Armstrong values most at the center. She and her husband Bill operated a ranch by the Snake River before he died. Her eyes glisten as she remembers how Event calendars fill up they’d laugh together while working Hughes said she’s never short of side by side. things on things to do. Zumba class, “With my husband gone, it’s just

me, my dog and my cat,” Armstrong said. But she finds camaraderie at the senior center. While the Senior Jammers played live music during lunch on Tuesday, Armstrong swayed her arms back and forth, clutching the hands of a friend who was in a wheelchair. He beamed with a huge smile and kissed her hand as the song came to an end.

Transportation services grow Armstrong said she’s fortunate that she can still drive herself to these activities. Others ride the senior center van, but receptionist Mary Wheeler said she wishes there were more options. “I would like to actually see a bus system that would bring people,” she said. Valley Regional Transit’s new Saturday bus route is a start, but the senior center isn’t open on Saturdays. There is, however, another new development in the works: VRT is working with Treasure Valley Transit in Nampa to create a network of local senior centers for schedulein-advance service, VRT spokesman Mark Carnopis said. VRT also has a volunteer driver program, which provides low-cost transportation to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities in Ada and Canyon counties.
