his week I interviewed U.S. Army veteran Matt Watson of Meridian. We talked about his service and the explosion in 2003 that cut his military career short (see page 3). With Veterans Day approaching, I asked Watson what the holiday means to him. “In my opinion, Veterans Day is a day that we should look at and actually use as a day to reflect, not to celebrate, ‘Hey, you served,’” Watson said. “I appreciate that, it’s great, but us veterans, when it comes to Veterans Day, it’s about the guys who actually gave their lives. Same as Memorial Day, we think of them as the same.” Watson was a senior at Nampa High School when the 9/11 attacks happened. He went to an Army recruiter’s office that day. “I joined out of anger, I didn’t join because I wanted to be a hero, I joined because I wanted to do something about what happened. I wanted to be a part of that fight,” he said. He certainly didn’t join so he could get free food on Veterans Day. “Gosh, that’s the one veteran stereotype that I hate,” he said. He encountered another stereotype while hanging out at College of Western Idaho between classes. Two young students walked by, and they were talking about soldiers. “One of the kids blurted out and said, ‘You know, people who join the Army are insane. … They join the Army just because they want to kill people,’” Watson said. “And you get that, you get a lot of people who think that.” I didn’t grow up in a military family, and I’m not personally very close with many veterans. But every time I interview someone who served in the

City lets Capital Christian Center keep Fairview Avenue address

Meridian Police Department Log

The city of Meridian will allow Capital Christian Center to keep the address it has had for the last 21 years, even though the church isn’t technically on Fairview Avenue. Capital Christian’s access is from North Hickory Way, a side street off Fairview. Its property doesn’t touch Fairview anymore because it sold that land for commercial development. Meridian public safety officials said the church’s Fairview address could confuse emergency responders. This prompted the city’s land development services department to ask City Council to change the address to North Hickory Way. Meridian safety officials can easily find church, but if there’s a big emergency and outside agencies respond, confusion about the address might slow them down, Meridian Fire Deputy Chief Perry Palmer said at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. There’s also concern that future development in front of the church will block first responders’ view. It’s hard to hide a 61,000-square-foot building that has a big sign on Fairview, Pastor Ken Wilde told council members. The name change would put an expensive burden not just on the church, he said, but on the several organizations that use the building, such as Dress for Success. Trying to get the word out about the new address and iron out confusion would be a “PR nightmare,” Wilde said. City code says a building’s address is determined by the street it faces, so council members had to decide whether they would grant an exception to Capital Christian. After discussion, council members unanimously agreed to let the church keep its Fairview address, based on its long-standing presence in the community, large square footage, prominent sign on Fairview and the use of its building by other organizations.

military, one thing becomes clear: You can’t categorize veterans any more than you can categorize any other group of people. It’s important to raise awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder and by Holly Beech other hurdles veterans might face. It’s im- hbeech@mymeridianpress.com portant to thank veterans for completing © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS a dangerous service that protects the rest of us. But on holidays like Veterans Day, we might be tempted to put veterans in a box. One box is labeled “Hero.” Another box, like with the student Watson overheard, might be labeled “Aggressive.” When I talked with Watson, I saw a unique individual who had faced threats and dangers by the age of 20 that I’ll probably never have to face. I saw a caring husband and dad who named his sons after the best friend that he lost at war. I saw someone who was determined to become an automotive mechanic even though he’d lost part of his vision and some of the movement in his right hand. I saw someone who had couchhopped and had been so frustrated that he wanted to quit school. I saw someone who was proud of how far he had come and grateful for all the people in his life who helped him get there. My appreciation for veterans and service members grows every time I have a chance to sit down and hear about their experience. But no article could capture the complexities and unique qualities of a person, veteran or not.

TRENDING 3 Police respond to Twitter threat, find no actual danger

Two posts on Twitter raised concerns raised concerns about a possible shooting at a Meridian high school Monday, Deputy Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea said in a news release, but officers determined there was no actual threat. One Mountain View High School student made a post indicating another was planning to “shoot up the school,” Basterrechea said, and the other responded by posting a photo of a gun. Officers determined the photo was taken from the Internet, and the student has no access to firearms. The students acknowledged that they make the posts, but claimed it was merely a joke. “Both students have admitted to the tweets, but claim they were just a joke. Unfortunately the students involved nor some of the parents seem to realize the seriousness of this behavior,” Basterrechea stated. “The Meridian Police Department takes these types of threats very seriously and a report will be forwarded to juvenile prosecuting attorneys for determination of any charges.”

Volunteers get ready for Achieve-A-Bowl

Leadership Meridian volunteered their time recently to decorate bowling pins for Junior Achievement of Idaho’s upcoming Achieve-A-Bowl. The event is JA’s biggest fundraiser and will be held March 14. Hundreds of participants from partner companies bowl each year to help JA provide financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurial programs to local students. The Achieve-A-Bowl is a team-building event that helps employees support local educational efforts. Proceeds go directly to programs for youth in Idaho. It’s not too early to start strategizing your game plan and sign your team up at jaidaho.org. Leadership Meridian is an annual volunteer and leadership training program run by the Meridian Chamber of Commerce.

Ybarra wins Idaho chief of public instruction race

(AP) — Republican candidate Sherri Ybarra has defeated Democratic opponent Jana Jones in the race for Idaho superintendent for public instruction. Ybarra will replace two-term incumbent Tom Luna, who did not run for re-election. Ybarra’s victory was narrow, garnering just 50.7 percent to Jones’ 49.3 percent. The win came as a surprise to some, as Ybarra had faced an uneven campaign trail over the past few months. With the Idaho Legislature set to start in two months, Ybarra must prepare to submit an education budget which will be reviewed and possibly adopted by state lawmakers. She previously said she would not change the budget Luna set out earlier this year which called for 6.9 percent increase, the highest increase request his office had ever proposed. The amount will boost Idaho’s public schools funding by $94 million in fiscal year 2015. However, she also said she wouldn’t be able to speak authoritatively about the budget until she was elected.

scar on Matt Watson’s right temple hints at his service in the U.S. Army. But come Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the Meridian vet won’t be looking for praise or recognition. His mind will be on his friend who didn’t make it back. For many veterans, he said, Veterans Day feels the same as Memorial Day. “You’ll have veterans posting pictures of their buddies that they lost,” Watson said. “They miss them, and Veterans Day brings that memory back.” When Watson remembers war, his mind goes back to the quick smile and kind words of a 21-year-old soldier from Texas. “Ray Joseph HutchinPhotos by Greg Kreller/MP son,” he said. “I called him Above: Matt Watson, a Nampa High graduate who now lives in Meridian, shows one of several challenge coins that he has Hutch.” Watson had barely gradu- received for his service in Iraq where he survived an IED attack. June of 2002. He didn’t have many close friends and he wasn’t sure about his future, but he knew he was angry about 9/11 and wanted to join the fight. Hutchinson also joined the Army in response to 9/11. The two met a couple of weeks by Holly Beech hbeech@mymeridianpress.com before their unit was deployed to Iraq. © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS When the newness of deployment wore off and the homesickness set in, Hutch knew how to cheer everyone up, Watson said. “He was good at making up games. He taught me how to blow bubbles with my spit, that was fun,” Watson said, laughing at the memory. “He always had something that we could do to take our minds off of home, help us cope with being 6,500 miles away from the nearest U.S. soil.” Watson served in the Army with Hutchinson for two years. Then, one day in 2003 when their unit was heading back to camp, an improvised explosive device exploded near their Humvee. Shrapnel tore through Watson’s body. “I was on my back bleeding to death, basically, and I could hear the other guys trying to help Hutch,” Watson remembered. “My medic was working on me because I was bleeding so bad, and he knew Hutch was gone. I was yelling and screaming, ‘Help Hutch! Go help Hutch!’ And he was trying to explain to me, ‘He’s gone. He is gone. I need to help you.’” Eleven years later, Watson still wrestles with guilt. “At the time, I was telling myself that Hutch was a better person than me. Why would he die, and not me?” Watson said. “I don’t think I’ve ever really gotten past it. I’ve coped with it. I’ve come to the realization that Hutch was willing to die for his country, and so was I. I just didn’t.” Watson was in the hospital for 30 days. The explosion permanently damaged his vision and use of his right hand, ending his dream of serving in the Army until retirement. He received a Purple Heart medal and was medically discharged. The 31-year-old is now a husband and a father, working toward an automotive tech degree at the College of Western Idaho. On the wall at Watson’s home is a painting of himself in uniform — a gift from Hutchinson’s mother. Another reminder of Watson’s friend rings out every time he says his sons’ names — 8-year-old Damien Ray and 3-month-old Liam Joseph — named in honor of Ray Joseph Hutchinson. “Giving his name to both my sons gave me perspective,” Watson said. “It’s like his legacy is getting to continue on.”

BY COURTNEY HERRICK Meridian—When it opened its doors in 2011, Ling & Louie’s became a fast favorite. Three years later, this contemporary-meets-comfort restaurant still bustles with the energy of a fresh-faced establishment combined with the fine-tuned aspects of a long-standing neighborhood joint. The employees of this locally-owned business truly care about everyone who walks in the door, and you know it as soon as you enter the restaurant. It was the sushi that called my name when I sat down in a cozy booth with a few friends on a recent fall day. As a longtime Ling & Louie’s loyalist (I wisely take advantage of the restaurant’s loyalty program, which gives a credit for every visit and a free meal on my 10th stop in) and a sushi lover, I was excited about the raw addition, and rightly so. My first bite of the sashimi-draped Rainbow Roll confirmed that Ling & Louie’s doesn’t do it unless they know they can do it right. While I savored the classics, such as the Philadelphia and Spider Rolls, a friend spiced up our order with the Vegas Roll. Suffice it to say that a surefire blackjack hand has nothing on this unique combination of fresh fish and fine flavors.

The sushi was not only excellent, it was obviously rolled by experts of the craft, and the fish was undeniably fresh. Our server confirmed that all four sushi chefs have national and international experience at

Thai basil and mint in a savory peanut curry sauce. It’s one of those dishes—one of many at Ling & Louie’s, including the Meatloaf, Pad Thai, and Drunken Woks selections—that quickly becomes a go-to. Top it with filet mignon and you’ll understand just how Ling & Louie’s has perfected the East-meets-West approach to food that eludes so many of its big box competitors. The appeal of Ling & Louie’s goes well beyond the meal. The restaurant offers not one but two happy hours: Monday – Saturday from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. until close. Choose from a comprehensive list of craft beers and wines by the glass, all complemented by a full bar that

While the sushi will keep me coming back for more (and I won’t be alone; the sushi bar was packed), one friend opted to stick with a timeless Ling & Louie’s dish when she ordered the Evil Jungle Princess. This delicious blend of fresh veggies is bolstered by the zing of

Kids select their food items, and meals are served in a traditional Asian-style bento box. Seniors enjoy a discount from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. daily when they can buy one entrée and get 50% off the second. And no matter when you’re longing for some Ling & Louie’s, takeout is always easy and hassle-free. Two private dining rooms also make this an easy choice for company gatherings, holiday parties, baby showers, or group dinners. The Dragon Room is perfect for up to 30 guests while the Lotus Room can comfortably accommodate up to 14 people in its private boardroom-like setting. Regardless of group size, any outing to Ling & Louie’s is bound to be a good time. This Treasure Valley cornerstone prides itself on offering a distinctive, fun, never-boring atmosphere—and it delivers every time. Now a three-year veteran of Boise’s restaurant scene, it’s easy to say that it’s the food that distinguishes Ling & Louie’s from the rest. But as soon as you walk in the door of this Meridian hot spot featuring distinct Asian fusion flavors, you know that it’s much more than that. It’s the fun, energetic atmosphere. It’s the recognizably family-friendly environment. It’s the top-grade sushi bar and the classic comforting dishes. It’s that welcoming feeling you get when you know you’re exactly where you want to be. 1192442 C M Y K

SCHOOLS Trustee’s tiered licensure comments draw scrutiny

C

arol Sayles was one of dozens of people who testified at a public hearing last month, criticizing a proposed tiered teacher licensing plan. But Sayles’ testimony raised a few eyebrows within West Ada School District headquarters, because Sayles is an elected school board member. The board has not taken a formal position on tiered licensure, district spokesman Eric Exby Keivin Richert line said. Sayles testified at a heated Oct. IDAHO EDUCATION NEWS 21 hearing on the plan, held at Meridian’s Mountain View High School, and identified herself as a school board trustee. A week later, the West Ada trustees took up the question of whether, or how, Sayles should have testified. was simply speaking on her own behalf. The topic, as identified on the Oct. 28 meeting agenda, was “discussion of board conduct.” At the end of the discussion, the board took no vote and did not censure Sayles, Exline said. Sayles did not respond Monday to an Carol Sayles email seeking comment. While the West Ada School Board has taken no formal position on the tiered licensure plan, Superintendent Linda Clark is among its most visible supporters. Clark co-chairs a State Board of Education working group that drew up the plan. “This is leading edge reform,” Clark told Idaho Education News in August.

READ MORE West Ada School District Superintendent Linda Clark shared her views on tiered licensure and the career ladder with Meridian Press last month. Read more here: bit.ly/tieredWestAda The tiered licensure plan would set up three types of teacher certificates — and is tied to a career ladder plan to boost teacher pay for newcomers and veteran teachers. Critics, including the Idaho Education Association, object to tying teacher licensure to evaluations written at the local level. The State Board is expected to take up the proposal this month and decide whether to take a proposal to the 2015 Legislature.

In August, 63 percent of voters were in favor of the bond, but that was still 3 percent short. The state provides four dates throughout the year on which a district can hold a bond election. Clark said

LOCAL NEWS The Village ends lease agreement with Toby Keith’s

T

oby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, one of the most anticipated tenants that was supposed to open last month in The Village at Meridian, won’t be opening after all, CenterCal Properties announced last week. The Village, developed by CenterCal, terminated by Holly Beech its lease with the restaurant hbeech@mymeridianpress.com earlier this month. © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS “We can’t get into the technical, the legalities of why the lease was terminated, but a decision was made to not continue to move forward with Toby Keith’s at The Village, so they unfortunately won’t be coming,” The Village at Meridian General Manager Hugh Crawford said Oct. 30. CenterCal filed a complaint against Toby Keith’s, listed as CRGE Boise LLC in the suit, on Sept. 26. After an eviction hearing on Oct. 14, CenterCal won the case and was awarded $1,308.40. Crawford and The Village’s attorney did not comment on the case. The lease was canceled because there was mutual concern on both sides, said John Thomas, the vice presi-

dent of marketing for Toby Keith’s parent company, Arizona-based Boomtown Entertainment. “We just realized that from a business standpoint, it’s just not the right market for us, so we’ve chosen to not open in that market at this point,” Thomas said. He didn’t give details on what changes in the Boise market caused the company to switch gears. “Obviously like any other business, there are factors — there are economic factors, there are location factors,” he said, noting that there are great people in the Treasure Valley and Toby Keith’s isn’t ruling out a future location here. The Village is working to find another tenant to fill

that space, Crawford said. “Toby Keith’s has kind of a cool, sexy name to it, but we think we can find just as exciting of a replacement for that space,” he said. Toby Keith’s, which was founded in Mesa, Arizona, in 2007, has 16 locations and nine more in the works. Thomas said the company is not struggling with money problems. Country singer Toby Keith does not have ownership in the restaurant, but he allows his name to be used through a licensing agreement. The chain has been involved in other legal disputes over money. Earlier this year, the state of New York filed two tax warrants against a Toby Keith’s location, claiming it owed almost $300,000 in unpaid sales tax, according to Syracuse.com. Toby Keith’s paid back the taxes by August. In 2013, Toby Keith’s landlord in Cincinnati sued the restaurant for missing several months of rent payments, according to the local ABC affiliate. The restaurant argued that the landlord had broken part of the lease agreement, and the parties eventually solved the dispute.

Family of man who shot wife, himself pushes for PTSD awareness

F

RESOURCES Experts estimate that 11-20 percent veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, 10 percent of Gulf War veterans and 30 percent of Vietnam veterans suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder. Veterans don’t have to cope with PTSD alone. Here are some local resources: n Idaho Suicide Hotline and Crisis Hotline: 1-800-2738255 John Reusser, executive director of the hotline, said every operator is trained in the same manner, including specific training to veteran’s issues. In addition, they have a number of resources to give to veterans who need help. In the hotline’s first year, about 76 of 850 total callers had a relation to the military. n Boise VA Medical Center: 422-1000 All veterans are encouraged to enroll in the VA Health Care System. Along with physical health care, the center provides mental health care for depression, grief, anxiety, addition, PTSD, relationship problems, emotional strain and more. Visit www.boise.va.gov

amily members of a 24-year-old Meridian man who shot his wife and then himself said he came back from war a changed man. According to Meridian Police, Kevin Smith shot his wife, 32-year-old Kimberly Smith, on Sept. 20 in the garage of their by Holly Beech home while her five children hbeech@mymeridianpress.com where in their rooms sleep© 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS ing. The grandmother to three of the children was also in the home and called the police. Kevin’s aunt, Diane Delvecchio, told Meridian Press in an email that Kevin suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and a traumatic brain injury after serving two tours in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army. “PTSD and TBI are horrific,” she said. “Kevin was a good, kindhearted man that loved his family very much.” According to a memorial site set up by his family, Kevin was honorably discharged with PTSD after serving for five years, including as a sniper. Kevin and Kimberly had been married for about six years, and together they had a 3-year-old daughter. Kevin helped Kimberly raise her four older children, ages 7, 9, 10 and 13. Michael Dickens, the father of the three middle children, and his wife came to the house the night of the shooting to pick up Kimberly. She had called and texted several times, saying Kevin was making her angry. “Kimberly was part of my family, although not blood, we were all very close to her,” Dickens said. When the couple arrived at the house, police were already there. “I asked if my kids were OK, and (the officer) said yes,” Dickens said. “I asked if Kimberly was OK, and he said no.” The Smiths were living with Dickens’ mother, and after the shooting, Dickens and his wife moved in so that the children wouldn’t have to move. “My big role with them is to just keep them in the same routine, because their mom had them in a perfect routine,” Dickens said. Dickens said he had not been concerned that Kevin would get aggressive with Kimberly or the kids. “If anybody, I would feel that maybe he would hurt himself,” he said. His mother had heard the shootings from inside the house, but she didn’t know they were gun shots, he said. “She thought they were messing around, so she went to go tell them to knock it off,” Dickens said. “When she opened the door is when the last shot happened. … She’s devastated, but she’ll be OK.” Kevin’s mom, Hifa Smith, left a voice mail with Meridian Press saying it’s still too tough to talk about the incident. But she said she would like to see more awareness of PTSD and TBIs. “It’s sad, the families have to go through this,” she said. “These issues are real and they need to be addressed so people don’t have tragedies.”
