or years, the historic downtown Meridian bank building sat vacant, “falling further into disrepair,” said Josh Evarts, a property developer and member of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.

Evarts used to walk by the 111-year-old building on his way to coach his son’s basketball team at Cole Valley Christian High School. Meridian athletes shine at Simplot Games



Rocky Mountain High School senior Michael Slagowski won the boys 1,600-meter race with a time of 4 minutes, 9.02 seconds Saturday at the Simplot Games indoor track and field meet, held at Holt Arena in Pocatello. Slagowski competes for YCMA Team Idaho for the indoor season, and he is a previous state high school champion at the 5A level, winning the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races in 2015. Teammate Lexy Halladay, an eighth grader at Lake Hazel Middle School, won the girls 1,600-meter race, finishing in 4:53.40. Both students will travel to New York City in March to compete in the New Balance National Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Presidential preference primary and caucus take place in March



Idaho voters will cast votes for presidential favorites at two events next month: Republicans and members of the Constitution party will vote in the presidential primary election May 8, and Democratic voters will take part in the presidential caucus March 22. Idaho uses a closed primary election system, per a 2011 law, meaning only members of the political parties holding the primary may participate. The Ada County Elections Office is running the primary election, which runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 8. To vote in the March election, voters must have been registered by Feb. 12. Early voting is now available during business hours and on Saturday at three locations, including Meridian City Hall. The Idaho Democratic Party is running the caucus, which starts at 7 p.m. March 22. Ada County voters will caucus at the Boise Centre on the Grove, 850

Three West Ada School District trustees will stand for recall in May 17 primary election T hree West Ada School District trustees announced Tuesday that they will stand for recall elections rather than resign. The board’s next step is to schedule a recall election on the next available date — the May 17 primary election. The trustees who will stand for recall are: n Tina Dean, zone 1, elected in 2013 n Carol Sayles, zone 3, elected in 2013 n Russell Joki, zone 5, elected in May

Trustee Julie Madsen, facing a potential recall election in zone 4, resigned Feb. 19, saying the recall efforts harmed the district’s ability to focus on students and to raise taxpayer support. The fifth board member, Mike Vuittonet, was also the subject of recall efforts, but that group dropped its efforts last month. Some patrons are still calling for Vuittonet to resign because he co-chairs the recall committee against the other four trustees. The recall measure will be on the May 17 ballot for Ada and Canyon county residents who live in those trustee zones. The recall committee will have 200 words to explain why the

Trustees will continue in their normal roles for the time being. The board will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the District Service Center in Meridian to interview candidates and possibly appoint a new trustee to fill Madsen’s seat through 2019. To recall any officer, a majority of the votes cast

at the recall election must be in favor of the recall and must equal or exceed the votes cast at the last general election for that officer. Dean received 188 votes in the last election; Sayles received 339 votes; and Joki received 219 votes. Each zone has roughly 19,000 registered voters. The recalls have been brewing since the board revoked the third year of former Superintendent Linda Clark’s contract in September in order to cure

an open meeting law violation. Clark left the district about a month later, claiming that some board members were “militating” her removal. When announcing that they will not resign, Joki and Sayles both pointed to their decades of experience in education and the value they bring to the board. Dean, who taught for 15 years before becoming a business owners, made no other statements. “I’ve had many constituents contact me to let

me know that they appreciate, support and admire my fortitude that I have shown,” Sayles said. “Parents, patrons and teachers are asking me to hang in there.” Another moving piece in this situation is a lawsuit filed by Joki and Sayles challenging the number of signatures needed on the recall petitions. The issue will go before a judge March 9.

Trish Duncan, West Ada School District’s clerk for the last 12 years, has retired from her role as clerk, and until the summer she will help principals with the opening of Heritage Elementary and Victory Middle School. Cheri Newbold has filled Duncan’s role as clerk and executive assistant to the superintendent. Newbold has been with West Ada for nine years, most recently as the administrative assistant for regional directors. Duncan announced her retirement to staff in March, she said. She is retiring Duncan for family reasons. Duncan has worked with the district for more than 30 years, first as a crossing guard when her children were young, then as a library aide, registrar, payroll staff member and clerk.

Blue Cross of Idaho announced Charlene Maher has been selected to serve as president and CEO of the health insurance company. Maher will begin March 1. Maher has more than 25 years of health insurance experience, according to Blue Cross. She most recently served as chief marketing officer and senior vice president for commercial sales at Emblem Health in New York. Maher will replace Zelda Geyer-Sylvia, who retired after serving as president and CEO for five years.

Belle is a 4-year-old chihuahua mix sporting a lovely curled tail. Belle means beautiful in French and intelligent in English, which we believe aptly describes our Belle. Clark was a nationally-recognized administrator who led the district well, he said. “They have a right to make a change, but I also think they were obliged, in my opinion, to pay her for her contract, thank her for a job well done and move on,” Winder said. “I just felt like they went way beyond what they needed to do to harass and embarrass her.” Joki and other board members have said they treated Clark fairly and sought to work with her, and that Clark initiated her retirement.

Other program highlights include John Williams’ “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” medley and selections from Georges Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2.” The Meridian Symphony is a 70-member all-volunteer auditioned ensemble that pres-

ents five concerts each season in a familyfriendly setting. On April 30, the symphony will perform at the Morrison Center. The program includes Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” and winners of the 10th annual Young Artist Competition performing solos with the orchestra. Not one to shy away from risk — he twice visited Iraq to support post-blast forensic investigations with his software company — Evarts tracked down the building owners, bought the old bank and renovated it into a meeting place and art studio called the Vault. Though the building was in rough shape when he bought it, Evarts envisioned an inviting gathering place with a rich brick and hardwood interior, leather couches, Edison bulbs strung from high-tension wires, roll-up windows and his artwork hanging the walls. Oh, and let’s not forget — “I had to have an unbelievable sound system in here, because I want to listen to Sinatra and U2 and Led Zeppelin and hang out,” Evarts said. To help with the costs, Evarts’ received a Meridian Development Corporation facade improvement grant, which matched his $30,000 to restore the building’s exterior. Meridian’s neUdesign Architecture and Construction completed the renovation. Evarts’ office is in the back of the building. The rest of the space will be open for small events, business meetings, or even just a place to sit and relax. The Vault’s first event, a launch party, is tonight. “Part of what I told the city is, we don’t have meeting spaces,” Evarts said. “Like a company needs to do a workshop or something where they need a little extra space ... What I’m really interested in is when the city brings in potential companies that are considering downtown Meridian, you can take them over to City Hall, that’s interesting, but if it’s an intimate group, why not put together a cool little event at the Vault, where you can show them a little bit of the history and they can meet a shady character like me.” Evarts, who also owns the historic Heritage building on Main Street, is passionate about renovating downtown, but he knows he can’t do it alone. To help take the stigma out of buying and renovating properties, Evarts is going to start holding quarterly workshops, with the first one in April. “Part of what I’m going to be doing in the workshops is really looking at, how do you build those value models — like how do you make sure you add up all the numbers, and how do you work with contractors, and how do you work with architects — and kind of take the mystery out of it,” he said. “There’s a lot of really great people downtown Meridian, and I think that there would have to be some trailblazers that are willing to break some eggs so we can make omelets.” Another “trailblazer” is Martin Schindler, who purchased the former

He chose the name “the Vault,” he said, to pay homage to that building’s history and purpose. “As we’ve grown and become this No. 1 city and gotten all this national recognition, what were the foundations of that?” he said. “Who were the people, places and things that were taking place that created this great, great story that we get to live in today?”
