Mad City Money helps teens think about budgeting

H

e wants a motorcycle. She wants to put the money in savings. That’s just one scenario students faced Monday night at Mad City Money, an event that simulates adulthood for teens so they can make true-to-life spending choices on things like going out to eat or cooking dinner, buying a new car or settling for a used one. They also have to choose what type of housing, clothing and fun stuff they can afford while also raising a child and paying off student loan or credit card debt. “It’s more difficult than it looks, the decisions. You have to make to make sure you can afford everything,” Erina Fuhriman, a freshman at Renaissance High School said. Her game partner, Rocky Mountain High School sophomore Courtney Butterworth, said Fuhriman’s expensive taste was straining their budget. “I’ve threatened to divorce her like four times now,” Butterworth joked. “I’m not the spender, I just need more,” Fuhriman contended. She needed a new truck for her job as a carpenter, she said. That new truck came with expenses of $585 a month, compared with Butterworth’s used car expenses of $205 a month. Volunteer Kathy Chambers chuckled at the debate. She’s helped with Mad City Money for the last five years. Only one team had to return its car purchase this year — a luxury car that they had to trade in for a bus pass in order to pay off debt, she said. Mad City Money is a curriculum from the Credit Union National Association that’s used nationwide to build budgeting skills in teenagers and to help them start thinking about life decisions and expenses they’ll face in just one to four years as adults. CadEd Credit Union helped lead the event Monday with the Meridian Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council at Forward Movement Training in Meridian. About 50 local high school students attended. “The concept is awesome,” Forward Movement Training owner Matt Schneider said. The facility has a mock house and credit union that’s typically used for safety training, but in this case worked well to help the budgeting simulation come to life. “This is an actual area that these kids can take and better themselves for eventual adulthood and decisions they’ll have to make,” Scheinder said. “It’s very valuable. I wish I would have had this when I was a kid.” Students said Mad City Money made them think about — and appreciate — everyday expenses that their parents cover, such as the Internet bill and gas. “It was a wonderful experience,” Rocky Mountain senior Drake Heithoff, chair of MYAC, said. “It made me realize that if you want nicer things, you’re going to have to work harder for it, because it’s not just going to come to you.” After calculating daycare expenses and formula costs, Bishop Kelly High School freshman Carson Curtis said his monthly income, which seemed like a lot at first, didn’t stretch as far as he expected. Andy Hobson, a parent who was volunteering at the childcare booth, said students’ eyes got big when they saw that daycare would cost them $800 a month; but having that startling realization now rather than latHolly Beech/MP er is good for them.

ast week while working on our cover story about the high school enrollment situation in the West Ada School District, I visited Rocky Mountain, Mountain View and Meridian high schools. Rocky Mountain and Mountain View are built for 1,800 students, but they each have more than 2,300 students. At Mountain View, the district’s fullest high school, I chatted with some students about their high school experience and if they feel like their school is too crowded. One student told me she wished she had more one-on-one interaction with her teachers, especially for help with the new Common Core math curriculum. Another girl said getting out of the parking lot for lunch is “horrible” and she has to wait in line for about 15 minutes. On the other hand, a Mountain View sophomore said he liked the size of his school — it provided a lot of opportunities to make friends and meet new people. He talked me to as he sat outside after school, and next to him sat a student from Pakistan who is in the foreign exchange program. He beamed as he told me about the diversity in his school. He’d been able to interact with students from Argentina, Thailand, Germany, Spain and, of course, the United States, he said. A third boy sitting in the group said, “I enjoy having a lot of people to

$25K micro-grant to increase number of computer programmers BoiseCodeWorks will use a $25,000 Idaho Department of Labor micro-grant to provide intensive, short-term training to meet Idaho’s increasing need for workers with computer programming skills, according to a Department of Labor press release. Nearly 140 people will be trained, with 85 estimated to enter related employment within 30 days of completion. An anticipated hourly starting wage of $25 will complement a wage gain of $10,000 to $14,000 annually for current workers. Industry partners committing $30,500 in match include Resource Data Inc., RetroLux, PonyWolf, The Gray Group, LollyLaw, ZerrTech and software companies such as Bodybuilding.com, CradlePoint and TSheets. The micro-grant program, approved by the Idaho Workforce Development Council and funded through the Idaho Workforce Development Training Fund, provides up to $25,000 per grant to local and rural communities for workforce development projects on a smaller scale than the traditional projects. Approved projects must increase employment and wages of a community’s workforce or assist in stemming the outmigration of youth and young adult workers from Idaho communities. Applications are reviewed and approved by a panel of representatives from business, education, economic development and the Idaho Department of Labor. District spokesman Eric Exline told me that just because a school is over capacity, class sizes aren’t necessarily bigger. Governor calls for Idaho Medal of Achievement nominees

The March 31 deadline is fast approaching for submission of nominees to be among the first recipients of the Idaho Medal of Achievement. Gov. Butch Otter issued an executive order in November creating the highest civilian honor to be conferred by the state of Idaho. Sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., the award will recognize individual Idahoans for their “exceptional, meritorious and inspirational” service to the people of Idaho. The Idaho Medal of Achievement will be awarded annually to individuals — living or dead — who are nominated by the public and considered by a five-member Idaho Medal of Achievement Commission. That panel will advance the names of no more than five finalists for the governor’s consideration. Submit your nomination at gov.idaho.gov or contact the governor’s office at 334-2100 for a nomination form by mail.

Chick-Fil-A sales to support fallen/injured officers funds

All three Chick-Fil-A locations in the Treasure Valley are donating a portion of sales on March 24 to the Meridian Police Employee Association and the 512 Fund to help first responders in times of need or loss. The 512 Fund was established in honor of Boise Police Officer Mark Stall (badge #512), who was killed in the line of duty in September 1997, according to the Boise Police Department’s website. The fund provides emergency financial and logistical help for families when an officer is injured. Recipients may be local or families of an officer who is brought to Boise for treatment. Established in 2011, the Meridian Police Employee Association also provides assistance to officers through its Injured/Fallen Officer Fund. According to mpeaidaho.org, the fund has been built to over $9,000 through fundraisers and donations. Over the past three years, $3,500 dollars has been paid out to first responders and their families. Grab breakfast, lunch and/or dinner March 24 at any of the following restaurants to help support this cause: n Meridian, 2012 N. Eagle Road n Boise, 8000 Franklin Road n Downtown Boise, 300 S. T

he city of Meridian received a clean audit report from the accounting firm Eide Bailly for fiscal year 2015. Accountant Kevin Smith presented the report to the City Council on March 8. “You were under budget, which is always good,” Smith said. “I commend you for that and that fiscal responsibility that you take.” The city spent $7 million less than it budgeted for general government expenses, according to city’s end-of-year financial report for FY2015. The city budgeted $48.8 million for general government expenses but only spent $41.8 million. It’s common for Meridian to come in under budget, according to the report, because the city saves up for projects, budgeting a certain amount each year until enough money accumulates to pay for a project. The city’s overall revenue increased by $14.2 million from FY2014 to FY2015, while expenses increased by $4 million. Meridian’s three major

revenue sources are property taxes, charges for services and licenses/permit fees. In FY2015: n Charges for services grew by $1.7 million n Property tax revenue grew by $2.2 million n Licenses and permit revenue grew by $475,000 The city’s fund balance, which acts as a savings account for future projects or unexpected expenses, grew by almost $3 million to a total of $39.2 million. Of that funding, $19.4 million is unassigned and available for use. The city aims to keep $10 million of the unassigned funds as a “safety cushion,” the report states. The city’s major capital investments last fiscal year were: n $2.5 million for the new Public Safety Training Center n $1.4 million for the Storey dog park n $941,460 for the police department remodel n $291,864 for City Hall parking lot improvements

$500,885 for police vehicles n $1.3 million for wastewater treatment plant administration and laboratory buildings n $1.7 million for the wastewater maintenance facility n $1.4 million for wastewater ultraviolet disinfection n $5.5 million in sewer/ water lines and wells construction n $13.4 million in donated and contributed capital water and sewer infrastructure. The police department spent $2.2 million of its $2.7 million operating budget. The department saved money on furniture for the new Public Safety Training Center — budgeting $472,500 for this expense but only spending about $163,000. An added expense to the city’s budget was $525,000 for a new fire engine. The city budgeted to buy one engine in FY2015, but the City Council approved a budget amendment to purchase a second new engine.

adhere to design requirements for the historical neighborhood. “The Meridian clinic is our oldest and most established practice. We’ve been in the building for 23 years, and not surprisingly, we’ve outgrown it,” stated Primary Health President David Peterman. “Our new building will provide patients with easier access, more parking, and a more comfortable experience. Our physicians and staff will enjoy a more efficient space so they can care for more patients in a timely fashion.” Patients of the Meridian clinic do not need to take any action at this time; they will be contacted later

West Ada teacher lawsuit moves forward

A

lawsuit filed by a former West Ada School District teacher against the district and his former supervisors will go before an Idaho Fourth Judicial District Court judge in April. Kenneth Nakis, who taught at Centennial High School until 2014, accuses his former principal and assistant principal of unfairly targeting him, leading to emotional and physical distress. Plaintiffs in the case are former district Superintendent Linda Clark, Centennial High School Assistant Principal Katrina Johnston, former Centennial High School Principal David Moser, the West Ada School District Board of

Trustees and the school district. The firm of Anderson, Julian & Hull is defending the district. “Because the subject matter of the lawsuit involves confidential personnel matters, the District is not at liberty to discuss the facts and circumstances of Mr. Nakis’ claims,” read a statement from the firm sent to the Meridian Press. “Suffice it to say, however, that the District denies all allegations of wrong-doing, and intends to fully defend this matter including the anticipated filing of a motion with the Court seeking dismissal of all claims.” Nakis said he “would love to talk” but has not yet agreed to do an interview.

He filed the complaint and demand for jury trial Sept. 24. He claims the unfair treatment and scrutiny by his school supervisors started in 2013 after he considered taking a job as a football coach at Meridian High School. Nakis went on unpaid medical leave from Oct. 16, 2013, to Jan. 6, 2014, at which point he ended his employment with the district to prevent more harm to his professional reputation and emotional and physical well-being, the complaint states. A hearing by phone is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. April 11 before District Judge Timothy Hansen. — Meridian Press staff

Couple plans to build rollerskating rink in Meridian

S

cott and Tammy Stevens, who moved to the Meridian area from Washington, are looking to build a rollerskating rink in Meridian, which would possibly be the city’s first.

The Stevens have not yet released a timeline or building details. They welcome public input, ideas and support through the planning process. The facility is slated to be at 1205 E. Kalispell St., near the southwest corner of East Franklin and South Locust Grove roads. The project’s website is meridianskate. com.

“We will be doing updates on our website page as the project is unraveling,” Tammy Stevens said in an email to the Meridian Press. She said she “would love to talk” but didn’t have much information to share yet. According to a Meridian City Hall Facebook post, the Stevens hope to wrap up the planning phase with the builder and architect by the end of summer. City spokeswoman Kaycee

Emery said the couple has not filed any paperwork with the city. Emery said that she and other city staff could not think of another skating rink that has existed in Meridian. On the Meridian Skate website, the Stevens said their 20 years of experience in retail and in other community projects spurred on their dream to bring the rink to Meridian and provide a “fun, safe and en-

chanting environment for our local community kids and families.” The community’s response has been positive, the website states. “We have overwhelming support for our facility from our community and it did not take long for us to realize the positive response, reinforcement of our idea and encouragement to move forward with this exciting new facility.”
