December 2015

Airs Fridays at 7:30 p.m. MT/PT; repeats Sundays at 5:00/4:00 p.m. MT/PT

DIALOGUE begins December with two PBS luminaries who recently visited Idaho and ends the month with an hour-long musical special. On December 4, host Marcia Franklin talks with PBS NEWSHOUR anchor Jeffrey Brown about his book of poems, The News. Recorded at this year’s Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, Brown shares his reflections on the news business and tells why he’s drawn to poetry. PBS President Paula Kerger talks with Franklin on December 11 about her tenure as the longest-serving president in PBS history. She discusses future plans for PBS as well as the challenges of running the broadcasting service. Kerger recently visited Idaho to help kick off the 50th anniversary of Idaho Public Television. On December 18, Pushing On features the inspiring story of Idahoans Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray. Wheelchair-bound by a neurological disorder, Skeesuck dreams of traveling Spain’s Camino de Santiago trail. Gray, a friend since childhood, made the dream a reality by pushing Skeesuck in his chair along the 500mile route. December 25 features an hour-long encore performance and interview with Boise singer/songwriter Eilen Jewell. Jewell performs her unique brand of Americana music with her band, which includes her husband and drummer, Jason Beek.

IDAHO HEADWATERS Airs Sunday, December 6, at 7:00 pm MT/PT OUTDOOR IDAHO crews hike deep into wilderness, climb mountain slopes, and ride horseback and muleback through rough country to reach the magical places where a small stream — a trickle — of water is the start of an major Idaho river. Idaho Headwaters, a new one-hour presentation, is the culmination of seeking these special places that lead to streams and creeks, then rivers, known and loved by Idahoans — the Snake, the Salmon, the Selway, the Boise, the St. Joe and the Owyhee. “There aren’t many places in the West that we call ‘sacred’; I think the headwaters of our major rivers deserve that designation,” says executive producer Bruce Reichert. “So much good comes from them. They take us to some of Idaho’s most beautiful places; they are difficult to get to, untouched by human intervention; and they have the ability to refresh us and remind us of what’s worth protecting in this world of ours.” A 16-mile hike into Spangle Lakes in the Sawtooth Wilderness nets four headwater sites within a radius of a few miles. Meanwhile it requires a multi-day journey to reach the Snake River’s beginnings in Wyoming’s Teton Wilderness and Yellowstone Park. “We’ve reported on Idaho’s major rivers, but finding their actual headwaters turned out to be a lot more challenging. It was definitely new country for us, and we’re delighted to be able to share it in this special,” Reichert says.

SEVEN GRUMPY SEASONS

Shot on location in the Cornish seaside village of Port Isaac, which stands in for the fictional Portwenn, the crew for this special is able to film the DOC MARTIN cast and crew while they are filming for the seventh season. The DOC MARTIN cast and crew work 12-hour days, five days a week, plus overtime while moving from location to location. “So there’s just no time to do anything other than to be focused on what you’re trying to capture and to be available for those opportunities when the cast members can be available to come off set and talk,” says Eric Luskin of APT (American Public Television) and an executive producer of the special. Despite the grumpy doctor of the title, who is awkward around people, Martin Clunes, the actor who plays the title character in the series, is anything but grumpy. “Everybody talks about Martin Clunes, who really does joke around on the set. He really is the leader on the set and just sets a very positive attitude. As soon as they say action, that smile goes away and he scowls and he barks, and it’s an amazing transformation to watch,” says David Rubinsohn, also of APT and an executive producer. DOC MARTIN ̶ SEVEN GRUMPY SEASONS is public television’s third behindthe-scenes look at the international hit series, and features interviews with producers, cast members, and director Ben Gregor.

Airs Tuesday, December 15, at 2:00/1:00 p.m. MT/PT; repeats Sunday, December 20, at 10:00/9:00 a.m. and Monday, December 21, at 2:00/1:00 p.m. MT/PT An average American spends 33 hours each week viewing a television or some type of streaming device. How exactly does the video get to the screen? What is the difference between broadcasting and streaming? On December’s SCIENCE TREK, host Joan Cartan-Hansen and her guests, Rich Van Genderen, director of technology, and Craig Koster, chief engineer, both of Idaho Public Television, will answer students’ questions about television.

IDAHO hen public

television was

created back in 1967,

Congress singled out children

as one of the underserved segments of the American population. Few people understood at the time what a fantastic Christmas present that was. Up to that time and well into the 1970s, children were expected to plant themselves in front of the home TV every Saturday morning and watch cartoons. The shows were full of adult humor (the creators unable to get into children’s heads), but children saw mostly humanized ducks, mice, or a wacky rabbit whack each other up the side of the loser’s head. Most children’s shows today – Idaho Public Television airs 12 hours a day for kids – use some humor carefully tied to age levels. Humor expands any child’s attention span and learning something from the experience makes the original joke much funnier. But today’s programs also deal with very serious matters, just as children have to deal with them. It made news when an early episode of MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD talked about divorce. It isn’t easy. Idaho Public Television is aware of how easily children can be influenced, given their limited experience with coping in a world run by adults. But all shows are rigorously tested for age levels and what’s appropriate for that age. Children who watch are better adjusted generally and do better all the way through school. – Royce Williams

Didn’t know we couldn’t do it. We go ahead and dive into something not knowing that we can’t do it. That’s what the production crew at KUID-Moscow learned on a very cold morning on February 26, 1979, when they skied and snowmobiled to the top of Moscow Mountain to videotape the total eclipse of the sun. It was the first time since 1918 that it had happened, and it wouldn’t happen again until 2017. They were filming the event for ABC News to be shown live in living rooms all across the US. It was not to be. It was as cold as blue blazes on the mountaintop, and the videographer was shaking so much anything fed into the lens was blurry. A pea-soup fog descended, and snow began to fall, mixing with the freezing fog. The rest of the crew on the snowmobile was late, something went awry with the snowmobile. It was very sluggish and died unexpectedly. ABC stayed with John Gray, the producer, as long as they dared, then hooked up with Helena, Montana, where it was clear as a bell. The once-in-a-hundred-years event passed unreported from Idaho. The KUID crew was just hoping to get off the mountain without serious frostbite. 1979

Then joyful sounds burst forth from LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER, at 11:00 p.m. MT/PT when the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Alan Gilbert, performs a program of fizzy French treats, from Offenbach’s Can-Can to Saint Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. Other selections include music by Ravel and songs that include “La Vie en Rose,” “C’est ca la vie, c’est ca l’amour.” Featured are mezzosoprano Susan Graham and pianists Inon Barnatan and Makoto Ozone. The performance in David Geffen Hall is recorded earlier in the evening.

Engineering Fun in the Outdoors It’s that time of year when we start thinking about snow, ice, snowmobiling and hazardous mountain roads. At IdahoPTV, it’s when we most appreciate our team of engineers. They’re responsible for keeping the five transmitters and 48 translators perched on peaks and ridge lines – many in very remote areas – broadcasting our programming all across our geographically diverse state. Most all of the equipment takes a pounding from the winter weather. I’ve always admired our team of engineers. Among their more technical duties, they ready the snowmobiles for the trek up the mountain and make sure all the backup generators have ample diesel fuel and will start without a glitch. Don’t tell them this, but they’re also like squirrels readying their surroundings for the coming snows (although I’m not convinced they go as far as hiding food in the backcountry). They tell countless stories of winter adventures including spending the night in a mountaintop building in whiteout conditions and finding chunks of ice the size of a VW fallen from our towers. They do it all with a smile. I figure it’s because they get outside in our beautiful state and see every neck of the woods. One project they just wrapped up was, in part, thanks to Idaho’s Permanent Building Fund. It allowed the KUID transmitter to get a brand new building on Paradise Ridge. It was 50 years old and actually predated public television as we know it in Idaho. The transmitter building now has ample A/C to keep the equipment cool (even in winter we sometimes need it). Additional funds from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security allowed the installation of a backup generator that is capable of keeping us on the air for over 90 hours on one tank of diesel. And just last week, a few miles south of Paradise Ridge, Ken Segota, Mike Cramblit and Larry Smith installed a new translator and antennas at the top of the Lewiston grade (sans snow and ice), which will provide the Lewiston/Clarkston Valley a very healthy IdahoPTV signal. The channel will change from 51 to 25 and viewers will need to perform a rescan to receive our channels. So, if and when you see an Idaho Public Television engineering truck on some Idaho byway, you might just give them a little wave of acknowledgment for their hard work.

Three New Dramas Kick-Off New Year

I

n January 2016, Idaho Public Television presents three new, much anticipated dramas — a new MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! Sherlock special, the final season of MASTERPIECE’s Downton Abbey, and a new American drama series MERCY STREET. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, a 90-minute special, premieres Friday, January 1, 2016. The special has an encore broadcast on Sunday, January 10. This is the first time that Sherlock is premiering in the US and the UK on the same day. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. Then on Sunday, January 3, the sixth season of Downton Abbey debuts as part of MASTERPIECE CLASSIC. This Emmy® and Golden Globe® awardwinning hit drama returns for its final season of intimately interlaced stories centered on an English country estate — an entertaining formula that has made Downton Abbey the highest-rated drama in PBS history. Where will fate, passion, ambition and duty lead the beloved characters? On Sunday, January 17, we present a new American drama series, MERCY STREET. Based on true stories, MERCY STREET takes viewers beyond the battlefield and into the lives of a distinctive cast of characters. Filmed on location in Virginia, the six-part series is the first American drama to air on PBS in more than a decade. And those are my picks for next month.
