Airs Thursday, March 10, at 8:00 p.m.; repeats Sunday, March 20, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT “Is there an adventure you’ve always wanted to experience?” OUTDOOR IDAHO producers posed that question to their Facebook friends. The result is an hourlong program called My Excellent Adventure, a collection of eight stories that takes selected viewers to some of Idaho’s best-loved locations. “We worked with experts and outfitters to make these excursions work,” says producer Sauni Symonds. “The eight adventures took about a year to shoot and produce. We think they represent a good cross section of what’s possible to experience in Idaho.” Viewer Vicki Lord bugles with elk. Gina Darrington

summits Idaho’s highest peak, Mount Borah. Adrianne Burlile shoots class IV rapids on the North Fork of the Payette. Other viewers hike, ski, raft and bike through scenic Idaho settings. “Think of it as a bucket list of great adventures,” says host and executive producer Bruce Reichert. “Each of these stories involves leaving one’s comfort zone and learning new outdoor skills.” Encores this month include A Sawtooth Celebration (March 3 at 8:00 p.m.); Idaho Headwaters (March 6 at 6:30 p.m.); 50 Years of Wilderness (March 17 at 8:00 p.m.); Backroad Adventures (March 24 at 8:00 p.m. and March 27 at 7:00 p.m.); and Birders, Banders & Binoculars (March 31 at 8:00 p.m.).

Gravity, inertia and momentum affect everything. Sir Isaac Newton developed his laws of motion to explain how these forces act. How do roller coasters and bumper cars illustrate Newton’s laws? On a new SCIENCE TREK, host Joan CartanHansen is joined by John Gardner, a professor of mechanical engineering at Boise State University; and Kathryn Devine, assistant professor of physics at the College of Idaho, to answer students’ questions about Force and Motion.

at IdahoPTV, we

look back. What we see is a

need for more than video.

It comes as a surprise to most people that we do more than television. It’s ongoing work, but on our 50th anniversary, we’re going back to the last year of the 20th century to do a wrap-up. That year there was an emphasis on young children, students and teachers: •19,400 books were given to underprivileged Idaho children. •74 workshops for 1,401 parents and child care providers. •696 entries in the annual READING RAINBOW children’s writing contest. •Built literacy skills for 174 students. •363 teenagers went to PBS Safe Night parties. •Training professors to teach tech skills to 250 students. •2,100 hours of college classes. •15 hours a week of after-school activities. •19 hours of shows on college and career planning. •18 hours of shows on technology for teachers. •47 hours a week for pre-school children on emotional and reading skills. •20 telecourses for enrichment and college credit. •600 hours of overnight instructional television taped for classrooms. A monthly newsletter went out during 1999 covering all that was offered besides television. It was called Connections and was mailed to 50,900 young children. Today, you can go to the Scout link on our website – IdahoPTV.org – and find out what’s going on. It’s not for couch potatoes. – Royce Williams

A LITTLE SOARING We usually think of environments as horizontal pieces of land, but Idaho’s different. We have vertical environments. We’re talking about the basalt canyons bordering the Snake River in the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey Conservation Area where over 15 species of raptors use the heat-producing dark rock for updrafts that take them to hunting areas on the plateaus high above the river. There the birds can hunt mostly small burrowing animals, then fly down, not up, to nest sites on the shelves of rock below. The result of this vertical environment is one of the densest populations of raptors in the world. The area of nearly 485,000 acres is small in relation to other protected pieces of Idaho, but turned on its side it’s much larger than the acreage suggests. Created by the huge prehistoric Bonneville flood, the canyon was ground out in a short time as flood waters carrying boulders ripped by the Swan Falls area at a volume of 33 million cubic feet per second. IdahoPTV went to the area with Morley Nelson, Idaho’s leading expert on raptors, and actress Lynn Redgrave and worked hard on a television special that aired nationwide. 1993 1994

In Defense of Food

Airs Tuesday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT Michael Pollan takes viewers on a global journey to rediscover the pleasures of healthy food — from the plains of Tanzania, where hunter-gatherers eat like our ancestors, to California, where vegetarians enjoy longevity. Along the way he shows how faulty science and deceptive marketing have encouraged us to replace real food with “food-like substances.” IN DEFENSE OF FOOD helps viewers rediscover the pleasures of eating while reducing the risk of diet-related diseases.

More Trains Around North America Airs Wednesday, March 9, at 7:00 p.m.

Hosted by Grammy-winning musician and storyteller David Holt, TRAINS AROUND NORTH AMERICA tells the stories of 17 of the continent’s historic and scenic tourist railroads. These stories capture railroads as they defined the spirit of North America, creating a new industry and rewriting transportation history — from quiet and relaxing trains featuring spectacular meals and views, to fast-paced trains full of glitz and glamour. As part of FESTIVAL, filmmaker Robert C. Van Camp will join us live in the studio during program breaks.

Idaho’s Snake River Plain is irrefutably a dry and inhospitable desert. Though the mighty Snake River cuts its way through this plain, everything surrounding it is notable for its lack of water. By the late 19th century, the westward expansion of the United States brings people from all parts of the country looking to make these dry expanses home, tolerating the inhospitable climate as best they can. Yet some see potential where others see a wasteland, and the dream of turning the desert into a green land full of farms and fields takes shape. Accomplishing this goal requires taming “The Mighty Snake” and putting it to work irrigating this treeless expanse. THE CONQUEST OF THE SNAKE reveals the story of how people in South Central Idaho labor together to build towns, plow land and construct an irrigation system that draws thousands to the desert and transforms it into an agricultural powerhouse. THANK YOU FOR 50 YEARS OF GIVING By Jenifer Johnson, Director of Development As we celebrate our 50 year anniversary we thank YOU for helping us reach out to all Idaho communities with programs that enrich and entertain — for children’s programs with beloved characters that stimulate young viewers’ minds and teach them to read; news and public affairs programs that help formulate informed opinions and decisions; and special programs that inspire and entertain with performances and stories from around the world and around the corner. FESTIVAL is Idaho Public Television’s largest annual fundraising campaign, and support from viewers is vital. In fact, the majority of our annual revenue — 74% — is donated by viewers! Nearly 20,000 active donors support Idaho Public Television and

our mission every year. These contributions, combined with gifts from private foundations and corporate sponsorships, provide critical support necessary for funding educational programs and projects; national and regional program purchases; local productions; online resources; and classroom access and teaching tools. Every donation during FESTIVAL makes a difference. Every contribution to Idaho Public Television positively impacts our community. The legacy continues, thanks to your support. P.S. Individual gifts and corporate donations to Idaho Public Television might also qualify for the expanded Idaho State Education Tax Credit. Be sure to check with your financial or tax professional.

A Triple Helping of Ken Burns

N

ext month, we present JACKIE ROBINSON, a powerful two-part documentary from filmmaker Ken Burns. Jack Roosevelt Robinson rose from humble origins to break baseball’s color barrier and waged a lifelong battle for firstclass citizenship for all African-Americans that transcends even his remarkable athletic achievements. “Jackie Robinson is the most important figure in our nation’s most important game,” says Ken Burns. “Ever since I finished my BASEBALL series in 1994, I’ve been eager to make a film about the life of this courageous American.” JACKIE ROBINSON airs Monday and Tuesday, April 11 and 12, at 9:00 p.m. Also airing in April is Ken Burns’ ten-part series JAZZ, which explores the evolution (and the genius) of America’s greatest original art form. It focuses on the extraordinary men and women who could do something remarkable — create art on the spot. The series offers complex and engaging portraits of the greatest figures in jazz. JAZZ airs Saturdays beginning April 1 on the Plus Channel. Finally, we encore THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA. This six-part documentary directed by Ken Burns and co-produced with Dayton Duncan, is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA airs MondaySaturday, April 25-30, at 9:00 p.m. MT/ PT. And those are my picks for next month.
