Why the “Vandals”? Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal. No, Idaho’s student-athletes go by a name earned nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Hec Edmundson, whose teams played defense with such intensity and ferocity that sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents. The mark made by that 1917 team went far deeper than wins and losses on the court. In 1917, Harry Llyod “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the student newspaper, the Argonaut - subtly tagged the team with a new nickname in a pregame write-up: “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.” McCarty’s indirect suggestion stuck. By 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have Vandals officially adopted as the nickname for Idaho teams. Adding a special touch were Edmundson’s roots. He was from Moscow and made a name for himself at Idaho as one of the nation’s top distance runners. He eventually left Idaho to coach at the University of Washington where the Huskies still play basketball in the building bearing his name the Edmundson Pavilion. 1

Beaman has also put the Vandals on the national map, as he led the program to its highest national ranking in 2010 when the Vandals earned a No. 63 national ranking by early March. The ranking rose to No. 58 in 2010, before Beaman took the Vandals into the top 50 for the first time ever with a No. 46 national ranking in 2011. Beaman was honored as the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year for his efforts during the 2011 season. Beaman took the program to another first in 2012, as he led the Vandals to their first Western Athletic Conference championship match, where they narrowly fell to No. 33 Fresno State 4-2. Beaman came to Idaho after serving as an assistant men’s coach at Texas Christian University for one season. In his time at TCU, he helped the Horned Frogs earn a 2006 Mountain West Conference crown, a trip into the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 31 national ranking. Two of the players from that team also earned All-America honors. Beaman’s first stop as a full-time head coach came at Barton County (Kan.) Community College, where he was the head men’s and women’s tennis coach from 2000-03. From 2001-03, he guided the men’s program to three straight top-five finishes in the final NJCAA rankings. Overall, he coached six ITA All-Americans and 10 NJCAA All-Americans at Barton County. In 2003, he was also nominated for the Barton County Community College Difference Award. After Barton County, Beaman moved on to the College of Santa Fe, where he started as an assistant in 2004 and eventually was named head coach in 2005. With a first-year head coach taking over a program with only four players on the roster last July, it’s fair to say there was uncertainty surrounding the Idaho women’s tennis team entering the 2011-12 season. When one of those returnees left Idaho due to illness before even playing a match, there was cause for concern. But head coach Dan Pollock took the challenge head-on as he lead the Vandals to one of their most successful seasons in the last 20 years. “Going into the season I wanted to have a winning season, but I wasn’t sure much beyond that what we were going to achieve, considering our lack of experience, as one of those returnees really didn’t play very much last year,” Pollock said. “It’s probably one of the toughest schedules that we’ve played at Idaho in a while, so a winning season was my main goal, but I would never have thought we would have done as well as we did.” Despite the obstacles, the Vandals “overachieved”, according to Pollock. Idaho boasted a 19-8 overall record and a 3-1 record in Western Athletic Conference play. The Vandals advanced to the WAC semifinals where they narrowly lost to eventual champion Hawai`i. Idaho also had three players earn a total of five WAC Player of the Week or Month honors, two who earned all-WAC honors and one earn a spot on the WAC all-tournament team. Idaho’s .704 winning percentage is topped only by the team’s 20-6 season in 2010, as far as season records go back, dating to the 1994-95 season. “I think overachieving is a good word. They definitely overachieved,” Pollock said. “If you look at what we were supposed to do on paper versus what we did in the matches, it’s a testament to the way they rallied around one another. They don’t just rely on one or two people to win matches every week. Everybody would go out and bust their butt and see who picks up the wins that week. They definitely did overachieve because of how highly motivated they were and how badly they want to win, and they don’t want to win for themselves, they want to win for each other.” In addition to returning senior Molly Knox and sophomores Alejandra and Victoria * Denotes WAC Match Lozano, Pollock added Beatriz Flores, Almudena Sanz and Sophie Vickers to the roster heading into the fall. That gave the Vandals the minimum number of players necessary % Denotes WAC Tournament to compete in a dual match, six. When the spring semester, and dual match play began, Pollock added Annamaria Gould, a senior who spent her freshman year on the team in 2008-09. “It’s very rare to have such a small team, especially on the women’s side where you have eight full scholarships,” Pollock said. “With our situation, with me taking over in July and having only four girls on the roster - and one of them going home sick as soon as she got here - just to get enough girls to play was a minor miracle, and getting the girls to do this well was pretty amazing.” After a 2-2 start, the Vandals won nine of their next 11 matches to improve to 11-4 by early March. That stretch saw Sanz, Knox and Victoria Lozano earn WAC Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks. “You don’t get individual players recognized if you’re bad as a team,” Pollock said. “Only the best teams get recognized and it happened to us. The girls did a great job. It was the girls at the top of the lineup who got the recognition, but all the way down they did a great job. When you win as a team it puts you in the regional and national spotlight, and it makes the big wins that individuals have within the team stand out even more, that’s why they got those awards.” After winning seven of their last nine matches to finish the regular season, Idaho headed to the WAC tournament with the No. 3 overall seed. A dominating 4-0 victory in the quarterfinals against Utah State put the Vandals in the semis against secondseeded Hawai`i. However, that’s where the season ended for Idaho, as UH squeaked by with a 4-3 win to get to the finals. At the tournament, Vicky Lozano was honored as a first-team all WAC selection for singles, and along with Sanz, was a firstteam all-WAC pick for doubles. Lozano also earned WAC all-tournament team honors after going 2-0 at No. 1 singles in the tournament. Sanz earned second-team all-WAC singles recognition. With five of the six players in Idaho’s everyday lineup set to return next season, Pollock hopes the team can once again exceed expectations, ones that will be much higher heading into 2012-13. “You always hope that from year-to-year you’re going to improve,” Pollock said. “Next year’s schedule is even more difficult. My expectation is that we get better and we beat some of those teams that beat us this year. Those girls coming back should be better, and the girls coming in should already be at an extremely high level, so the hope is that we’re challenging for a postseason berth.”

2012 Schedule & Results

Date Opponent Score Despite climbing to as high as No. 56 in the national rankings early in J. 20 #26 Washington L, 0-7 the season, things were not looking good for the Idaho men’s tennis team J. 21 #75 Pacifi c W, 4-3 near the end of March. The Vandals owned an 8-13 overall record, and the J. 21 Seattle W, 6-1 team’s four-match win streak that began a month earlier seemed a distant J. 28 #75 Oregon L, 0-7 memory. Since then Idaho had lost seven straight, and still had three of its J. 28 UMKC W, 4-0 five Western Athletic Conference matches ahead on the schedule. J. 29 Portland L, 2-5 But instead of packing it in early, the Vandals made the most of their F. 3 Gonzaga W, 4-3 opportunity by winning their last five matches of the regular season and F. 13 #45 Boise State L, 0-7 clinching the WAC’s No. 2 seed along the way. Idaho stayed hot with its F. 18 #73 Drake L, 0-7 second 4-3 victory over Hawai`i in as many weeks in the WAC semifinals, and F. 19 #38 Nebraska L, 1-6 narrowly missed an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament when it fell F. 20 Creighton W, 4-3 4-2 to Fresno State in the program’s first WAC championship match. M. 3 Eastern Wash. We were just a matter of points from achieving that * Denotes WAC Match this year.” % Denotes WAC Tournament Idaho’s even .500 record can be a bit misleading. The Vandals may have traded wins for competitive experience by scheduling eight matches against nationally ranked teams, and picking up an ninth in the WAC finals against Fresno State. The Vandals went 1-7 against their nationally ranked opponents, but Beaman said that experience aided the team’s surge at the end of the season. “When we played Fresno State in the final, you could see that we weren’t surprised by anything,” Beaman said. “The top teams, the ones that spend time in the top-25 across the board they’re mentally tougher and hitting the ball harder. They’re doing everything at a higher level. We’ve seen that with the Washingtons, the Fresno States, the Boise States, when you’ve seen it and competed against it there are no surprises. You don’t have to adjust to their pace, you know what to expect.” When it looks to reach new heights again next season, the Vandals will return all but a pair of seniors to the roster. Andrew Dobbs, who went 15-11 in doubles in the spring, along with Alan Shin, who went 17-10 in singles, will graduate. That leaves five of Idaho’s top six intact for next season, and with the addition of redshirt Dmitry Perevoshchikov Beaman believes the team’s goal of reaching the NCAA tournament is with reach. “The next goal is getting to the NCAA championships,” Beaman said. “Hopefully by winning the conference tournament, but also having a high enough team rank that we qualify for an at-large bid if for some reason we don’t win the tournament.”

University of Idaho Tennis Student-Athlete Services / Athletic Training Barrie Steele Director of Student-Athlete Services Head Athletic Trainer Barrie Steele has been the head athletic trainer at Idaho since 1986. He oversees a full staff of certified athletic trainers and works hand-in-hand with Idaho’s team physicians: Dr. Steve Pennington, Dr. David Rych and Dr. Ed Tingstad. Steele is a 2011 inductee into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame.

Student-Athlete Support Services With the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services provides not only equipment, strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes. “We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before the injury and with a reduced chance of reinjury.” Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho Student-Athlete Services staff was the total overhaul of the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a ‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one auditorium-style meeting room were also added. After the renovation, the equipment room nearly doubled in size. Totally new washer/dryer systems cut hours out of cleaning times, while a new ‘cubby’ equipment system greatly streamlines the equipment check-out process. The athletic training area was also expanded greatly, with new offices, larger work areas, and private exam rooms. Then enhancements have given Idaho’s athletic trainers more room to work with and have greatly expanded its capabilities for in-house treatment and rehab.

Idaho Athletic Training Philosophy Statement The purpose of the Idaho athletic training room and its staff is for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation, race or gender, have equal access to the training room and the services provided therein.

University of Idaho Tennis Memorial Gym Outdoor Courts The University of Idaho tennis program recently took a massive step forward with renovations and upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts on campus. Construction was completed on the six Memorial Gym Courts and the four courts available on the Administration Lawn. “The completion of the four Admin Lawn courts as well as the upgrades at the Memorial Gym courts are a huge boost for our tennis program,” Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “This will not only benefit our program but will also be an asset to Moscow and the surrounding tennis communities.” Construction began in May of 2009 on the courts on the Administrative Lawn and was completed in June. Attention then shifted to the Memorial Gym courts where upgrades were completed in September and the final surface coat was applied in October to complete the project. “They really did a great job, not only on the playing surface but by putting in four very attractive courts in the picturesque Admin lawn setting,” Beaman said. “The Memorial Gym court upgrades were extremely well done and have added to the courts already in that location.” The men’s and women’s teams now have ten courts available to play competitive matches. Prior to the renovations the team was only able to play competitive matches on three of the courts. “Going from three playable courts to ten gives us the ability to host home matches, WAC events and fall tournaments in the future,” Beaman said. “Ten courts will also have the benefit of running more effective team practices, providing upgraded facilities for HPERD classes, intramurals and use by Idaho students, facility and staff. The upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts are another example of the increased commitment to high quality facilities by the Idaho administration and athletic department. “I would especially like to thank Rob Spear for his role in getting these courts done,” Beaman said. “This project along with the Kibbie Dome renovations and the many other things happening right now and on the near horizon, are making Idaho Athletics into a premier athletic program.”

University of Idaho Tennis Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center

The Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center, also called the “Kibbie Dome,” is one of the unique facilities in all of the NCAA. The Kibbie Dome has been home of Vandal Athletics since 1975, when the barrel-arch roof was completed. In 1976, the building earned the award for America’s Outstanding Structural Engineering Achievement. It took nearly seven years to complete the structure, which is tall enough to fit Idaho’s Theophilus Tower inside. Construction began in 1969 on the site of the former Neale Stadium, which had partially been destroyed by fire. The field and stands were completed in 1971, but it took four more years to finish the unique roof. The east end addition, which includes the athletic department offices, locker rooms, training rooms and a weight room, was completed in 1982. In 2004, the facility began its next phase of improvement, as enhanced academic and athletic support facilities were added for student athletes. The Norm and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center was added, more than doubling the size of the previous weight room to 7,000 square feet. Locker rooms were also expanded to over 14,000 square feet. Team meeting rooms, two student athlete computer labs, study rooms and expanded academic support areas have also been added. Additional expansions are also planned for the near future. The Kibbie Dome is the indoor facility for Vandal men’s and women’s tennis. Idaho tennis also uses the dome to train in the winter and during times of inclement weather. The building also hosts football, basketball and track and field. The floor can be cleared for action on up to nine courts at once and in the winter of 2007 two courts were resurfaced.

University of Idaho Tennis A Brief History

The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander. On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when ffour students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two yyears later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association. Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenbaugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics). The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, designed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education. The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus. The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus. President Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to visit the campus in 1911. He planted the first tree in Presidential Grove. Through the next 50 years, the campus continued to grow in size and academic offerings. Among the additions were Forney Hall, the School of Education, Science Hall, Hays Hall, the Music Building, the Library, the Student Union and outreach campus locations. In 1976 the new ASUI-Kibbie Dome won a national engineering structural achievement award. Its sound structure has withstood roaring cheers of Vandal fans (as well as the groans and wailings of rival teams) ever since. Today, the university is home to over 12,000 students and nearly 1,300 faculty and staff. It continues to be a leading place of learning in i Idaho and the West, because although it is ever-responsive to the changing c needs of its students and society, it never forgets its roots and a traditions. Perhaps no better example of this distinct combination of rich history h and innovative service is the Associated Students of the University U of Idaho (ASUI). Today as vibrant as ever, ASUI has been a force f on campus for more than 100 years.

University of Idaho Tennis City of Moscow

MOSCOW IS: IS • One of the top 100 Small Arts Towns • Host of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival • Largest of the 27 Moscows in the United States • A U.S. Small Arts Center • A “Gem Community” Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer. More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho. Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America. The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent. For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out. Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town. If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found. At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

University of Idaho Tennis State of Idaho Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and gold, Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State. Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world-famous sites. Here are just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers. • Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. – 8,000 feet deep at some points. • Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls) • Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser) • The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho • The world famous Lava Hot Springs • The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho • Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play • Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest • Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most famous is Pend Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake Pend Oreille. Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing locales are abundant all over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how the expedition was saved from certain starvation by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe. Idaho is the 13th largest state in the nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime rates and a healthy lifestyle. Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The state-run agency’s responsibilities include researching and expanding the Idaho potato market.

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

“Athletics is the front porch and highly visible dimension of the University.” - Dr. Duane Nellis 17th president University of Idaho

Dr. Duane Nellis M. Duane Nellis is the University of Idaho’s 17th president. He provides robust and engaging leadership for the University of Idaho by supporting its statewide land-grant mission of teaching, research and outreach. He also is guiding the institution to re-envision that mission for the 21st century by focusing on entrepreneurialism, engagement, global connections, sustainability, diversity and interdisciplinary synergies. Prior to and since his inauguration in October 2009, Nellis has engaged the state of Idaho to deepen the land-grant University’s presence and impact. His presidency is defined by that outreach, a characteristic that began when he became president and immediately embarked on a statewide listening tour – meeting more than 1,500 people along a 1,500-mile travel route. He is committed to maintaining and growing connections and relationships with stakeholders and decision-makers. Nellis has served with distinction in various regional and national leadership positions. He is a commissioner for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and was appointed by Idaho Gov. C.L. ‘Butch’ Otter to serve on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. He served as president of the Association of American Geographers, one of the largest professional geography organizations in the world. He is also past president of the National Council for Geographic Education; past president of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographic Honor Society, and he served as one of 10 members of the National Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Research Universities Committee. Nellis is recognized nationally and internationally for his research utilizing satellite data and geographic information systems to analyze various dimensions of the earth’s land surface. He is recognized for his research and teaching through numerous awards, such as receiving national honors from the Association of American Geographers in 2001, the AAG’s John Fraser Hart Award for Excellence in Research, and the Outstanding Contributions Award by the AAG’s Remote Sensing Specialty Group. Prior to his appointment at Idaho, Nellis served as provost and senior vice president of Kansas State University and at West Virginia University as dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, WVU’s largest academic college. A native of the Northwest, he met and married his wife, Ruthie, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in earth sciences at Montana State University. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in geography at Oregon State University.

Dr. Rob Spear

Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multimillion dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. Last fall, the first phase of a new-look Kibbie Dome debuted when the plywood on the west end wall was replaced with translucent panels. When the Vandals kickoff in 2011, not only will the east wall match the west but there will be a new club area with suites, loge boxes and a clubroom as well as premium seating and a new press box. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He began a second term with the NCAA’s ‘Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan – a junior at Idaho.
