Why “Vandals”? Idaho student-athletes have gone by the nickname “Vandals” for more than 90 years. The nickname was earned by a basketball team coached by Hec Edmundson, whose team played defense with such intensity that area sporstwriters said it “vandalized” its opponents. The nickname first was used in 1918 strictly for the men’s basketball team and officially was adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the student newspaper, The Argonaut, Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, succeeded in their push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Germanic tribes of old.

Idaho Advances to WAC Semi-Finals, Finishes with 22 wins A 20-win season completes the program’s remarkable turnaround under Jeff Beaman. Idaho won two matches the season before Beaman took over. This season the team has been nationally ranked, upset several nationally ranked teams, won 22 matches, and racked up numerous individual honors. The Vandals began to make history when they upset No. 74 UNLV in early February. Two weeks later the team knocked off No. 59 New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. Beaman said the victory was the biggest win for Idaho tennis in years. The win was part of an eight-match winning streak that would see Idaho ranked No. 58 nationally, the highest national ranking in program history. The team was ranked No. 63 in the nation heading into a showdown against No. 53 Boise State at the end of March. In a dramatic struggle, the Vandals came up one-set short against the Broncos, falling 4-3 in a match Beaman said was as close as a tennis match could be. Instead of letting the loss affect, Idaho came out strong two days later advancing to the finals of the BSU Spring Classic. The Vandals defeated Ball State and Cornell, two teams that have been in or near the national rankings all season. March also saw Lachlan Reed and Adrian Simon win back-to-back player or the week awards. Reed and Alexander Joitoiu opened the season ranked nationally in doubles and several Vandals were ranked in the ITA Mountain region for singles and doubles throughout the season. Despite the unprecedented success of the regular season, Idaho went into the WAC tournament with a lot left to accomplish. Memorial Gym Outdoor Courts The University of Idaho tennis program recently took a massive step forward with renovations and upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts on campus. Construction was completed on the six Memorial Gym Courts and the four courts available on the Administration Lawn. “The completion of the four Admin Lawn courts as well as the upgrades at the Memorial Gym courts are a huge boost for our tennis program,” Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “This will not only benefit our program but will also be an asset to Moscow and the surrounding tennis communities.” Construction began last May on the courts on the Administrative Lawn and was completed in June. Attention then shifted to the Memorial Gym courts where upgrades were completed in September and the final surface coat
was applied in October to complete the project. “They really did a great job, not only on the playing surface but by putting in four very attratcive courts in the picturesque admin lawn setting,” Beaman said. “The Memorial Gym court upgrades were extremely well done and have added to the courts already in that location.” The men’s and women’s teams now have ten courts available to play competive matches. Prior to the renovations the team was only able to play competitive matches on three of the courts. “Going from three playable courts to ten for the upcoming season gives us the ability to host home matches, WAC events and fall tournaments in the future,” Beaman said. “Ten courts will also have the benefit of running more effective team practices, providing upgraded facilities for HPERD classes, intramurals and use by Idaho students, facility and staff. The upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts are another example of the increased commitment to high quality facalities by the Idaho administration and athletic department. “I would especially like to thank Rob Spear for his role in getting these courts done,” Beaman said. “This project along with the Kibbie Dome renovations and the many other things happening right now and on the near horizon, are making Idaho Athletics into a premier athletic program.”

Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center
The Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center, also called the “Kibbie Dome,” is one of the unique facilities in all of the NCAA. The Kibbie Dome has been home of Vandal Athletics since 1975, when the barrel-arch roof was completed. In 1976, the building earned the award for America’s Outstanding Structural Engineering Achievement. It took nearly seven years to complete the 14-feet tall structure, which is tall enough to fit Idaho’s Theophilus Tower inside. Construction began in 1969 on the site of the former Neale Stadium, which had partially been destroyed by fire. The field and stands were completed in 1971, but it took four more years to finish the unique roof. The east end addition, which includes the athletic department offices, locker rooms, training rooms and a weight room, was completed in 1982. In 2004, the facility began its next phase of improvement, as enhanced academic and athletic support facilities were added for student atheletes. The Norm and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center was added, more than doubling the size of the previous weight room to 7,000 square feet. Locker rooms were also expanded to over 14,000 square feet. Team meeting room, two student athelete computer labs, study rooms and expanded academic support areas have also been added. Additional expansions are also planned for the near future. The Kibbie Dome is the indoor facility for Vandal men’s and women’s tennis. Idaho tennis also uses the dome to train in the winter and during times of inclement weather. The building also hosts football, basketball and track and field. The floor can be cleared for action on up to nine courts at once and in the winter of 2007 two courts were resurfaced.

The
university of idaho A legacy of leading The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander. On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when four students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two years later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association. Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenbaugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics). The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, designed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education. The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus.
A brief history The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts, whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus.

“Athletics enriches the college experience.” ~ Dr. Duane Nellis Athletics, University of Idaho president Dr. Duane Nellis says, is an integral element of the college experience. It is a way to engage students and alumni, it enhances opportunities not only for student-athletes but for students, and is a way to gain widespread exposure for the University as a whole. “It is the front porch of the University and a highly visible dimension of the University,” said Nellis, who became Idaho’s 17th president July 1, 2009. “It enriches the college experience. Many of our alums have warm memories not only of their university academic experience but also of the social dimensions that come through athletic programs.” A native of nearby Spokane, Wash., Nellis earned his bachelor’s degree at Montana State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees at Oregon State University. He met his wife, Ruthie, at Montana State. “It’s a thrill,” said Nellis at his introductory news conference. “I feel like I’m coming home. I have so much energy and passion for the work of land grant institutions and the special role they play in education. I just can’t wait to get started!” Nellis comes to Idaho after five years as Provost and Senior Vice President at Kansas State University. Prior to his time at Kansas State, he was the Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University for seven years. Previously, Nellis served as provost and senior vice president of Kansas State University, which has more than 23,000 students, 1,600 faculty, an annual budget of more than $730 million, and annual research funding that exceeds $215 million. He oversaw 12 deans and 10 other units, including the offices of the vice provost for information technology services and the vice president for research. At Kansas State, he was responsible for strengthening its national leadership in selected strategic areas through targeted excellence investments, restructured and new programs that augmented student learning opportunities, and enhanced diversity and civic engagement among faculty, staff, and students. At West Virginia University, he led a highly successful capital fundraising campaign, oversaw the planning and construction of a new $60 million

He also strengthened social justice and related diversity programs across the college and university. In his professional role, he has served in various leadership positions as well. Nellis was on the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities Academic Officers Executive Council and was the National Chair Elect until his hiring as Idaho’s president. He also served as president of the Association of American Geographers, one of the largest professional geography organizations in the world. Great FAlls (BS) • University of MOntana (MBa) • University of Idaho (Phd) Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. When the Vandals kickoff against San Diego State in mid-September, the most visible piece of the remodel will be in place with translucent panels covering the west wall. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He is in the midst of a two-year term as a member of the NCAA Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan – a sophomore at Idaho.
