Why Vandals?

Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal. Idaho’s studentathletes earned the nickname nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Idaho legend Hec Edmundson, whose teams played with such ferocity that area sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents. In 1917, Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the Argonaut, the student newspaper, wrote in a pre-game story, “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.” By 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have the name officially adopted as the nickname for all Idaho teams.

University of Idaho 2011 Idaho Soccer Preview

After setting school records for overall wins (14) and conference wins (5), qualifying for their first Western Athletic Conference Tournament and posting the best WAC finish in program history, there’s one simple task for head coach Pete Showler and the Idaho women’s soccer team. Do it all again – and then a little bit extra. “Our aim is to make the WAC Tournament and then to win it,” Showler said. “To do that, we’re playing some tougher opposition and hopefully it prepares us in the right way.” The cupboard isn’t exactly bare, either, as Idaho returns all 11 starters and 16 total letterwinners after graduating three players, Mel Canite, Jennifer Eugenio and Jenn Hull, who helped start the program’s turnaround. Idaho was within one victory of a regular-season WAC title and saw its season end in the quarterfinal round of the WAC tournament, and after getting a glimpse of the goal, each Vandal comes back in 2011 hungrier than ever. “We talk all the time about consistency,” Showler said. “The aim is to be consistent from day one through the rest of the season, and if we do that, then we’ll be okay. I expect to see those experienced players, even though they’re predominantly sophomores and juniors, bring that experience to the pitch every practice and every game.” Showler is entering his seventh-season at the helm of the Vandal program, and he integrates two new assistants into the staff in 2011. Grant Williams joined the team in the spring and will coach the team’s goalkeepers, while Ashley O’Brien joined the team in the fall after a standout playing career between the University of Connecticut and University of San Francisco. Volunteer assistant and Vandal soccer alum Jenny Springer also returns for her second season on staff. After a strong spring slate and an early August fall camp kickoff, Showler said the team is more than ready to get out on the pitch and prove themselves once again. “The girls worked hard over the summer and during the early part of practice, and

they’re just chomping at the bit to get out on the pitch, play someone other than themselves and show what we’re about,” Showler said. “There’s exciting times ahead.”

Forwards:

The discussion about Idaho’s forward position starts with junior Chelsea Small. The 2010 WAC Offensive Player of the Year and two-time first-team AllWAC honoree returns for her third season on the Vandal front line. She boasts the kind of production that makes opposing coaches and defenses shudder. In two seasons, Small has scored 21 goals and dished eight assists for 50 total points. She has 10 game-winners, including a WAC-best eight in 2010, and has attempted 222 shots through two seasons – and she did it all while being the focal point of every opposing defense. A handful of new faces will vie for the other spot on the frontline, including transfers Bailey Hewitt and Morgan Sullivan, and freshmen Nikki Adams, Lilly Archer and Morgan Porter. Sophomore Christina Boddie also split time last season between the forward and midfield spot, and she could slip into the front-line rotation as well. Hewitt will have a bit of a head-start over the other newcomers because she joined the team for 2010 spring play and scored a pair of goals in April competition, but Sullivan netted 22 goals in two seasons at Clarke University and the freshman group comes in with plenty of scoring accolades of its own. Boddie tied for second on the team last year with four goals and two game-winners, and attempted the second-most shots (37) among Vandal players last year.

Midfielders:

Idaho features a strong and diverse midfield with plenty of game experience and depth. Juniors Jill Flockhart and Megan Lopez have started every game for Idaho the last two seasons and are strong bets to earn similar nods this season. Fellow juniors Amber Pimley and Erica Hart played in every game last season and combined for 31 total starts, so they should strongly factor in to the mix, as well.

3 2011 Idaho Soccer Preview

While there are four strong candidates, that doesn’t mean the slots are all filled. Sophomore Kristi Atkinson, who redshirted 2010 after shoulder surgery, played very well during spring ball, as did sophomore Breanna Wilson, who started seven games for Idaho last season as a freshman. Figure Boddie to be in the mix as an attacking mid and just among the returners, Idaho is going to have a formidable crew in the middle.

Defenders:

Sophomore Mary Condon started four games and Alison Page, a senior with 15 career starts to her name, returns after redshirting 2010. Layton led the team and put together the third-best season in history with seven assists, while Zuniga scored one goal and assisted three more and Breen headed in one more goal last year as a freshman. First-year Vandal Emily Ngan will add depth to the Idaho back line early on. She was a first-team all-state pick in Oregon in

www.GoVandals.com

Goalkeepers:

Senior Liz Boyden is the likely starter in goal after an outstanding junior season in which she tied the Idaho school record with six shutouts and posted a career-best 1.08 goalsagainst average, with 91 saves. She enters her fourth year poised to break nearly every career goalkeeping record at Idaho. Junior Caroline Towles is an athletic keeper who made several nice saves and performed very well for Idaho during spring play in 2009 and 2010. While she has no regular-season game experience, she has played many minutes during the spring season and is in her third year with the program. In freshman Marissa Fehrman, Idaho gets one of the region’s top goalkeepers. Between Faith Lutheran High School and the Neusport FC club team, Fehrman’s teams consistently won and she was recognized often. She was voted MVP Goalkeeper at the 2009 Summer Surf Cup, helped Neusport FC take four straight Nevada state titles, and helped lead FLHS to a 31-7-2 record over the last two seasons. While Boyden is the veteran starter, Showler says he still expects Towles and Fehrman to push for field time and to help increase the overall level of play in front of the goal.

We are Vandals

The 2010 Vandal back line helped the team post its best defensive regular season in history last year, and the entire group returns for this season. Sophomore Nitalia Zuniga started every game, junior Lauren Layton started 20 and sophomore Chelsie Breen started 18 games for Idaho last season. Junior Cassandra San started the team’s first 17 games before sustaining a leg injury at Utah State, then fellow junior Christine Leathem stepped in and played very well as a starter in the team’s final four matches.

Last year’s squad set a new standard for defense at Idaho after holding opponents to regular-season totals of 20 goals, 15 assists and 55 points, and a 1.00 goals-allowed average. Idaho opponents also posted just a .072 shooting percentage, which is the lowest in program history. The Vandal defense also held 14 of the team’s 21 opponents to fewer than two goals and posted six shutouts in 2010.

This is Our Time

Freshmen Katie Baran and Annie Millard are two freshmen who come to the team who possess impressive quickness and have reputations for gritty, hard-nosed play. Showler says he expects them to immediately challenge for playing time.

2009 and was voted Best Defender of her team two years running. At the club level, she also helped the Eastside United claim five Oregon state titles.

I am Determined

Pimley and Lopez were regulars in the center mid spot, while Flockhart was a first-team All-WAC selection at outside mid. Hart split time between the midfield and the back line for Idaho, and has the versatility to step into either spot. That group of four combined for 10 goals and eight assists last season.

PETE SHOWLER

Seventh Season

** 2010 WAC Coach of the Year ** Entering his seventh season in charge of Vandal women’s soccer, Peter Showler is the longest-tenured coach in program history. He leads the team into the 2011 campaign coming off the best season in school history, during which the Vandals broke school records for total victories and conference victories and earned Showler the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honor. Showler has resurrected an Idaho program and led the team to 23 victories in the past two seasons - the highest two-year win total in school history. His 2010 Vandals qualified for the program’s first conference tournament after tying for third in the WAC with a 5-3 record. That squad also reached unprecedented heights with four all-WAC selections, two first-teamers and two second-teamers, and the WAC Offensive Player of the Year, Chelsea Small, to go along with Showler’s Coach of the Year honor. Idaho’s 2010 group also reached a National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region ranking for the first time in school history with a high spot of No. 9. The team was also featured in TopDrawerSoccer’s Tournament 64 Rankings during the year. The 2009 Vandals went 9-10 overall, and Small was named WAC Freshman of the Year and was voted first-team all-WAC - both of which were program firsts. That team also posted a 2-0 record against the state of Idaho to claim its second Governor’s Cup title since 1999. The 2010 Vandals then successfully defended the Cup with a 1-1 record against in-state competition. Showler has led Idaho to a 32-78-5 (.300) record through six seasons, and a .585 winning percentage in the last two years. Under his direction, Idaho is 22-3-1 when they score at least two goals, and the team opens the 2011 season with an active streak of 12 straight wins when scoring first. Showler’s coaching career began in 1989 at University of Sunderland. He was a player/coach for the Sunderland men’s first team - the equivalent of NCAA Division I - from 1989-94. In 1990, he started a women’s soccer program at the university and guided the team to a national title that same year. He was selected to serve as the English Universities Women’s National Team from 1992-94 That team was marked with success, with a Four Nations Cup during the 1993-94 season and an unbeaten record during his tenure. Showler has also worked with the men’s professional game at Everton FC, Sunderland AFC and Huddersfield Town FC. In 1999, Showler moved to Oregon, where he took on a variety of positions in the sport over the next five years. He began as Assistant Director for Goal-Line Soccer Camps and was an Academy Coach for the FC Willamette Soccer Club in Eugene through 2001. He also was the Head Coach and Director of Player Development for the Salem United Soccer Club until 2003. Showler’s work with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and Oregon Youth Soccer Assocation (OYSA) began in 2000 as the ODP head coach. After leading his team to the 2001 regional crown, he was honored as the OYSA/Nike Coach of the Year. He worked with the Oregon ODP program through 2004. In 2002, Showler also served as a Staff Coach for the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Region IV ODP team. The 2003 season marked Showler’s first foray into the NCAA ranks when he was hired as an assistant at Portland State University, which he helped claim a 2004 Big Sky Conference title. While coaching at PSU, Showler also filled his time as a team head coach for the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association ODP Program, as team head coach for the Lake Oswego Soccer Club, and as a USSF License Clinician. In 2005, Showler earned a position as a Region IV U19 Girls Assistant Coach and has since worked as Regional Head Coach for various age groups.

University of Idaho 2010 Season in Review

The University of Idaho women’s soccer team met in the winter of 2009 after their breakout 9-win season and talked about enhancing the team bonds and increasing intrasquad competition. When they met again in the summer preceding the season, they came up with “One Team, One Dream” as their 2010 motto.

Junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden broke the school record for goalkeeper minutes played (1,909), tied the records for single-season and career shutouts at six and 11, respectively, and lowered her school-record career goals-allowed average to 1.28.

The Vandals wanted to focus on building chemistry and togetherness, while striving for their goal of earning a bid to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and, eventually, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, as well.

Balance and unselfishness were the keys to Idaho’s offensive success in 2010. While Small put up the gaudy goal numbers (13 total, eight game-winners), Idaho had 10 different goal-scorers this season and eight players who registered an assist. Five players accounted for Idaho’s 14 game-winning goals.

Judge the 2010 Idaho soccer season by that one goal alone, and it was a success, but it was the team’s many accomplishments along the way that head coach Pete Showler said really illustrated how well the Vandal women bought in to the group’s success.

“We had lots of people scoring and lots of people assisting goals, and it’s a product of being a good team,” Showler said. “They made up their minds to come together as a team, and they did it.”

In 2010, Idaho drew its first National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region ranking, set a school record for victories (14), tied the school record for conference wins (5) and broke a school record with six consecutive wins, which the Vandals did twice during the season.

Another key to Idaho’s success was playing well in the clutch. In 2009, Idaho went 9-10, but was just 5-9 in games decided by one goal. In 2010, the Vandals were 9-4 in those close matches.

Idaho defended its Governor’s Cup crown to give the Vandals possession of instate bragging rights for consecutive years for the first time. Idaho players earned five total all-tournament honors and three WAC Athlete of the Week awards. In November, a program-best four Vandals were honored with all-WAC recognition, while sophomore Chelsea Small and Showler made history as the first Vandals to earn WAC Offensive Player of the Year and WAC Coach of the Year honors, respectively. “It’s a recognition of some individual performances, but really it’s a recognition of the team,” Showler said of the awards. “The team achieves things because of individual performances, but the individuals achieve things because of the team’s performance, so it’s a cyclical thing.”

At the team’s season-end banquet, the playervote award winners were announced. Small earned Offensive Player of the Year, while Boyden was the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Towles was voted Most Inspirational, while sophomore Jill Flockhart earned the team’s Unsung Hero Award. Small and sophomore midfielder Amber Pimley shared the Players’ Player of the Year honor. Small was also honored with the Golden Boot Award as the team’s top scorer, and freshman defender Chelsie Breen earned the Golden Shinnie Award for having the highest overall defensive grade.

Idaho soccer also defined the term “student-athlete” by posting a 3.46 cumulative grade point average, while two individuals, Small and sophomore Lauren Layton, were ESPN All-District honorees and Small was a second-team ESPN Academic All-American - another program first.

With the big step up into conference contention from a program that historically hasn’t had success, Showler said the most important focus for the team is to remember the work that got them to this point, and to keep striving for bigger goals.

Most importantly, the Idaho women went 5-3 in the WAC, and in the final weekend of the season, they were still in the running for the regular-season conference title. While they fell just short of that accomplishment, they took a No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament and made history as the first Idaho team to qualify for a postseason conference tournament.

Showler recognized Idaho’s three outgoing seniors, Mel Canite, Jennifer Eugenio and Jenn Hull, for buying into the program as freshmen, and for pushing through adversity to help build team’s foundation.

“I think it’s testament to the hard work they’ve put in, on and off the field,” Showler said. “Traveling as much as we did, and winning on the road is a hard thing to do, and I’m very proud of what the girls achieved. “My staff worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and my assistant coaches don’t get the recognition they deserve, so I want to recognize them.” While Small and the Vandal offense grabbed most of the headlines, the Vandal defensive backfield put together the best statistical regular season in school history. In 20 regular-season games, Idaho allowed 20 total goals, 15 assists and just 55 points for a 1.00 goals-allowed average, all of which are the lowest totals in Idaho regular-season history. Idaho’s defense also held opponents to a measly .072 shooting percentage - the lowest in school history. In its 20 regular-season games, Idaho didn’t allow a single opponent to score more than two goals. Only six opponents managed to find the Vandal net more than once in 2010.

“It’s going to be tough to get 14 wins again, but that’s got to be our aim - and we’ve got to better it,” Showler said. “There will be ups and downs , just like there are every season, but the big difference right now is the self-belief, the chemistry and them working for and pushing each other.”

“Finishing on two really positive seasons is great for them, because they believed in this program when not a lot of other people did,” Showler said of the seniors. “There’s a great sense of pride about what they’ve achieved and been involved in, and they should take that away with them.” Canite, Eugenio and Hull were part of six wins in their first two seasons, but helped the team win 23 total games in their junior and senior campaigns. The team’s first-round exit at the hands of eventual WAC Tournament champion Fresno State still stings the Vandal women, but it also has the Vandals inspired. “They were very disappointed, because they feel they didn’t represent themselves as well as they could, but it was a new experience,” Showler said. “Next year, it won’t be new. Last year, winning nine games was a new experience for the program, and they got over that and built on it. “They’ve got to learn from it, and I have every confidence that they will, and that they’ll be stronger because of it.”

41 Western Athletic Conference

The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets. In addition, the WAC’s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the past decade. The WAC has sent a total of 35 teams to bowl games since 2001, including more than half of its teams in 2008 with a record-tying five teams. The conference has sent teams to BCS bowl games in three of the last five seasons including Hawai’i’s appearance in the 2008 Sugar Bowl. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the past 28 seasons. Every current school in the WAC has competed in the NCAA Tournament since 1990. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003 including Fresno State’s College World Series victory in 2008. In women’s sports, Fresno State softball has competed in every NCAA Tournament ever held while Louisiana Tech basketball has played in all but three. In 2009, Hawai’i made its fourth trip since 2000 to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four, and in 2010, the Rainbow Wahine earned a trip to the Softball College World Series.

I am Determined

Now in its 50th year of existence, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best intercollegiate competition. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA.

Current WAC alums have made their presence felt as well. David Carr (Fresno State) was the first player selected in the 2002 NFL Draft. Cheryl Ford (Louisiana Tech) was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year and helped the Detroit Shock win the league’s championship in 2003. In 2004, the United States’ softball team won the Olympic gold medal with former Fresno State players Laura Berg and Lovie Jung. Jeff Weaver (Fresno State) earned the win in the St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series clinching victory in 2006. Quarterback Colt Brennan (Hawai’i) finished third in the 2007 Heisman Trophy voting, and in 2008, Natasha Kai (Hawai’i) helped the United States to a gold medal in soccer at the Olympics in Beijing.

The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008.

The WAC has had just five commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94) and Karl Benson (1994-present).

Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports - eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

Since 1962, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, 1978. The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai’i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women’s programs from Air Force and Hawai’i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, 1999. Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the 2000-01 season. The current membership was established on July 1, 2005, when Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. For the 2012-13 season, the WAC will add Denver, UTSA, Texas State and Seattle to replace withdrawing members Boise State (2011), Fresno State (2012), Hawai’i (2012) and Nevada (2012).

This is Our Time

In 2001, the WAC partnered with ESPN for coverage of football and basketball giving the conference national exposure from one of the most respected broadcast entities in the country. The WAC also officially added WAC.tv in 2006 to give fans streaming internet access to many of its postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, gymnastics, softball and baseball.

Student-Athlete Services / Athletic Training

Barrie Steele

Director of Student-Athlete Services Head Athletic Trainer

Megan Shifflett

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Student-Athlete Support Services

With the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services provides not only equipment, strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes. “We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before the injury and with a reduced chance of re-injury.”

After the renovation, the equipment room nearly doubled in size. Totally new washer/dryer systems cut hours out of cleaning times, while a new ‘cubby’ equipment system greatly streamlines the equipment check-out process. The athletic training area was also expanded greatly, with new offices, larger work areas, and private exam rooms. Then enhancements have given Idaho’s athletic trainers more room to work with and have greatly expanded its capabilities for in-house treatment and rehab.

Idaho Athletic Training Philosophy Statement

The purpose of the Idaho athletic training room and its staff is for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation, race or gender, have equal access to the training room and the services provided therein.

Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho Student-Athlete Services staff was the total overhaul of the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a ‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one auditorium-style meeting room were also added.

Shifflett will be the primary trainer for the Vandal soccer and track and field squads in 2011. She spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant trainer at Idaho, where she worked with the Vandal volleyball team. Shifflett is a 2008 graduate of the University of Wyoming. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Athletic Training. She earned a master’s degree from Idaho in Recreation and Sports Management in 2010. She is originally from Laramie, Wyo.

Iverson Speed and Strength Center

Weight Training Equipment:

The University of Idaho’s commitment to its student-athletes can be seen in the continuing enhancement and growth of its athletic training, and strength and conditioning services – the most notable the Norman and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center. The $3.3 million center was dedicated on April 30, 2004. “The Vandal Athletic Center is a huge bonus for our players,” Idaho soccer coach Pete Showler said. “The facility is second to none. That, combined with the experience of the Vandal Strength and Conditioning staff, gives us a great head start before we even step on the pitch. The players can work on improving stamina, power, flexibility, and core areas, as well as improving speed and agility; all key areas for our game.” The floor-to-ceiling glass that fronts the building and extends down the sides provides a spacious view of UI’s main campus. Inside, the Center is equipped with a full complement of strength-training equipment. As much as it has everything a student-athlete needs to remain in top condition, it has the best in rehabilitation equipment. Among the most notable is a hydrotherapy pool, which features a floor that can be raised and lowered depending on the need at the time. The 8,000 square foot facility was opened for student-athlete use on March 19, 2004. It is approximately three times as large as the previous training facility and includes a 7,000 square foot first floor used for day-to-day strength and conditioning needs. It also includes a 1,000 square foot mezzanine level filled with cardiovascular equipment used for warm-up, conditioning and rehabilitation.

The Idaho equipment and locker rooms were given a complete facelift in the summer of 2008. The locker rooms were given new flooring, tiling and other improvements. The equipment room nearly doubled in size, and a brand new washing and drying system was installed to greatly streamline the cleaning process. Also installed was a new “cubby” system of equipment distribution. Each student-athlete is assigned a lockable cabinet where his/her gear is placed after washing, which makes check-in and check-out of equipment a significantly more efficient process.

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Administration

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

“Athletics is the front porch and highly visible dimension of the University.” - Dr. Duane Nellis 17th president University of Idaho

Dr. Duane Nellis M. Duane Nellis is the University of Idaho’s 17th president. He provides robust and engaging leadership for the University of Idaho by supporting its statewide land-grant mission of teaching, research and outreach. He also is guiding the institution to re-envision that mission for the 21st century by focusing on entrepreneurialism, engagement, global connections, sustainability, diversity and interdisciplinary synergies. Prior to and since his inauguration in October 2009, Nellis has engaged the state of Idaho to deepen the land-grant University’s presence and impact. His presidency is defined by that outreach, a characteristic that began when he became president and immediately embarked on a statewide listening tour – meeting more than 1,500 people along a 1,500-mile travel route. He is committed to maintaining and growing connections and relationships with stakeholders and decision-makers. Nellis has served with distinction in various regional and national leadership positions. He is a commissioner for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and was appointed by Idaho Gov. C.L. ‘Butch’ Otter to serve on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. He served as president of the Association of American Geographers, one of the largest professional geography organizations in the world. He is also past president of the National Council for Geographic Education; past president of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographic Honor Society, and he served as one of 10 members of the National Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Research Universities Committee. Nellis is recognized nationally and internationally for his research utilizing satellite data and geographic information systems to analyze various dimensions of the earth’s land surface. He is recognized for his research and teaching through numerous awards, such as receiving national honors from the Association of American Geographers in 2001, the AAG’s John Fraser Hart Award for Excellence in Research, and the Outstanding Contributions Award by the AAG’s Remote Sensing Specialty Group. Prior to his appointment at Idaho, Nellis served as provost and senior vice president of Kansas State University and at West Virginia University as dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, WVU’s largest academic college. A native of the Northwest, he met and married his wife, Ruthie, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in earth sciences at Montana State University. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in geography at Oregon State University.

Dr. Rob Spear Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-ofthe-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. Last fall, the first phase of a new-look Kibbie Dome debuted when the plywood on the west end wall was replaced with translucent panels. When the Vandals kickoff in 2011, not only will the east wall match the west but there will be a new club area with suites, loge boxes and a clubroom as well as premium seating and a new press box. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He began a second term with the NCAA’s ‘Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan – a junior at Idaho.

University of Idaho State of Idaho Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and gold, Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State. Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world-famous sites. Here are just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers.

• Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. – 8,000 feet deep at some points. • Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls) • Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser) • The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho • The world famous Lava Hot Springs • The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho • Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play • Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest • Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most famous is Pend Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake Pend Oreille. Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing locales are abundant all over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how the expedition was saved from certain starvation by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe. Idaho is the 13th largest state in the nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime rates and a healthy lifestyle. Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The state-run agency’s responsibilities include researching and expanding the Idaho potato market.

Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer. More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho. Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America. The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent. For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out. Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town. If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found. At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

University of Idaho A Brief History

The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander. On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when four students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two years later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association. Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenbaugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics). The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, designed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education. The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus. The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus. President Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to visit the campus in 1911. He planted the first tree in Presidential Grove. Through the next 50 years, the campus continued to grow in size and academic offerings. Among the additions were Forney Hall, the School of Education, Science Hall, Hays Hall, the Music Building, the Library, the Student Union and outreach campus locations. In 1976 the new ASUI-Kibbie Dome won a national engineering structural achievement award. Its sound structure has withstood roaring cheers of Vandal fans (as well as the groans and wailings of rival teams) ever since. Today, the university is home to nearly 12,000 students and nearly 1,300 faculty and staff. It continues to be a leading place of learning in Idaho and the West, because although it is ever-responsive to the changing needs of its students and society, it never forgets its roots and traditions. Perhaps no better example of this distinct combination of rich history and innovative service is the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI). Today as vibrant as ever, ASUI has been a force on campus for more than 100 years.

Explanation

Offside:

Ball

OFFSIDE

Attacker in onside position

Ball

Attacker in offside position Second-to-last defender

Second-to-last defender

Shot on Goal:

A shot that is “on target.” A shot that, if untouched, would go into the goal. If a shot hits a crossbar or goalpost without being deflected by the goalkeeper or a defender and does not score, it is not considered a shot on goal. A shot on goal must result in either a save by the goalkeeper or a goal by the attacking team.

Save:

A save is officially awarded only when a goalkeeper or defender stops or deflects a shot on goal. To receive credit for a save, the goalkeeper must have stopped a shot that otherwise would have gone into the goal. A goalkeeper who stops an off-target shot or a cross is not credited with a save.

Cross:

Also called a “crossing pass,” a cross is a kick from a wide position on the field into the penalty area in front of the goal with the intent of setting up scoring opportunity for a teammate.

Assist:

A player is credited with an assist when she makes a pass that directly results in a goal. Each scoring play can result a maximum of two assists or none at all. A player is credited with an assist if she makes a pass to a teammate, who then scores a goal without losing possession or having to elude a defender. If a player takes a shot and misses, she can be awarded an assist if a teammate scores off the rebound, but only if the defense doesn’t gain possession before she shoots.

Direct Free Kick:

A direct free kick that is awarded at the spot of an infraction for a physical contact foul such as tripping, holding, pushing, tackling from behind and jumping into an opponent. It is also awarded after a hand ball infraction. A direct free kick can be scored by going directly into the goal and does not have to be touched by anyone other than the player kicking the ball.

Indirect Free Kick:

An indirect free kick is awarded at the spot of less serious, non-contact infractions like obstruction, as well as offside infractions. Indirect kicks must touch another player, offense or defense, before the ball goes into the net in order to be credited with a score.

Corner Kick:

A direct free kick that results from the defending team putting the ball out of bounds on the end line. The attacking team gets to kick the ball from the area around the corner flag and may score directly from the corner.

Yellow Card:

A player is shown a yellow card as a disciplinary action for minor offenses, such as unsporting behavior, delaying the game, persistently committing fouls, or deliberately leaving or entering the field without the referee’s permission. A second yellow card results in a red card, and the resulting ejection, for the player.

Red Card:

A player is shown a red card as a major disciplinary action. Actions that result in a red card include serious foul play, violent conduct, spitting at a player, being given two yellow cards or deliberately handing a ball or intentionally fouling another player to prevent a goal or goal-scoring opportunity. The player given the red card must immediately leave the playing area and may not be replaced by a substitute, leaving her team short-handed for the remainder of the match.

Substitutions:

In order to complete a substitution, a team must inform the referee in advance and must wait until a stoppage of play, like an out-of-bounds. A player who leaves the field during the first half may not re-enter the game until after halftime. A player who leaves in the second half is allowed one re-entry. Players subbed out in the two overtime periods are not allotted a re-entry. An injury forcing a player to leave the field does not count against her re-entry count. In the final five minutes of a match that is not tied, the clock will stop when the leading team makes a substitution, but not if the trailing team or both teams simultaneously make a substitution.

ONSIDE

A difficult rule to understand, offsides results when a player moves into a position where she is closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent. Offside only becomes an infraction if the player’s team possesses the ball and she gains an advantage by being in that position. The charts below illustrate the penalty.
