BENGAL VILLAGE Step off the sideline.

Dear Friend, Welcome to Bengal Village, the future of intercollegiate athletics at Idaho State University. Bengal Village, which we present to you here in conceptual form, is the most promising and visionary goal for Idaho State University Athletics since Holt Arena was conceived 40 years ago. It is among the initiatives that the University has set in motion to enhance its stature among peer institutions regionally and nationally, and with the public it serves. Importantly, Bengal Village offers opportunities for you to play an enduring role in achieving that goal. As gifts from individuals like yourself make the vision a reality, the impact of Bengal Village will be seen throughout the campus, the community of southeastern Idaho, and beyond Idaho itself. That is because athletics puts a university in the spotlight. Yet the benefits of athletics extend beyond spurring school spirit, public enthusiasm, academic growth and donor support. Perhaps even more important is the knowledge we gain from athletics about human physiology, performance and wellness, all of which are at the core of health-related research and learning at Idaho State University. As I learned when I was a college athlete — football was my game — and then in my career as a physiology researcher and professor, the knowledge we gain from helping athletes achieve and maintain peak performance can benefit anyone who is concerned with wellness, mobility and aging. That is central to Idaho State University’s state-mandated mission to educate tomorrow’s health-care professionals. In the context of athletics, achieving these benefits begins with attracting and retaining the best athletes with quality facilities, and helping athletes perform at their physical peak. By extension, successful athletics programs attract national attention, generate interest among prospective students and faculty, stir alumni and community pride, and encourage financial support for the University. Bengal Village embodies the future Idaho State University, just as Davis Field and Holt Arena did when they were designed and constructed. We invite you to join us in this bold new chapter. Go Bengals! Arthur C. Vailas, Ph.D. President 3
The 1977 ISU basketball team won the Big Sky Conference championship and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Guard Ed Thompson (14, shooting), Greg Griffin (30), and Steve Hayes (33) scored 14, 12, and 27 points respectively, knocking UCLA out of the Final Four for the first time in 10 years. Thompson and Hayes are both members of the ISU Sports Hall of Fame.

Dave Kragthorpe received the champion coach’s ride after directing an Idaho State football turnaround that transformed the Bengals from 0-11 in 1979 to 12-1 and NCAA Division I-AA National Champions in 1981.
ISU Sports Hall of Famer Debbie (Shively) Akers was the all-conference setter on volleyball teams that won conference championships in 1986 and 1987 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament both seasons.
IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS
Tradition Excellence Vision
In the pages that follow, we introduce Bengal Village — two simple words, one compelling vision for a modern complex of facilities that embody both the legacy and the future of Idaho State University Athletics. The first word — Bengal — evokes the spirit of athletics at Idaho State University. The second — Village — reflects the sense of community and continuity that are cornerstones of University life. The outline of Bengal Village that we present here in conceptual form is a tribute to the legacy of ISU Athletics. It is a realistic, practical yet bold proposal to meet today’s pressing needs while building for the future. The Bengal Village concept recognizes that Idaho State University and the community of southeastern Idaho are at a historic threshold. To compete with the best, to recruit the best, to retain the best, and to further ISU Athletics’ place in southeastern Idaho’s quality of life, the University must renovate, expand and upgrade athletics facilities that have served us for decades. And we must begin soon. Previous generations gave us Davis Field (affectionately known as the “Spud Bowl”) in 1936, and the Mini Dome (today’s Holt Arena) in 1970. Now it’s our turn. Just as those who came before us met the needs of their time while anticipating our needs today, we must address current demands as well as aspirations for the future. With your gift, we can do both. We can assure that athletes, fans and all of southeastern Idaho will look upon Bengal Village for decades to come with pride and gratitude, as our gift to them.

Holt Arena (1994)
THE NEED In 2005, the University commissioned Sink Combs Dethlefs Architects to conduct a comprehensive study of all Idaho State University athletic programs and support facilities. The study compared the University’s needs to existing facilities. The firm also was charged with developing a master plan, published in September 2007, to guide facilities development. The analysis found that Idaho State University’s facilities had fallen behind its Big Sky Conference opponents, as well as peer institutions nationwide. The analysis noted two prominent examples: The athletics facility most recently built at ISU — Holt Arena — dates to the 1960s. Its predecessor, the small stadium centered on Davis Field, was completed in 1936 as a Depression-era public-works project. Current accommodations for athletes and spectators at Idaho State University, the study found, undermine athlete recruitment and fan participation. They do not reflect the University’s vision of itself. Bengal Village is that vision.
6
THE SOLUTION The comprehensive evaluation of Idaho State University athletics facilities is the origin of the Bengal Village concept. The study by Sink Combs Dethlefs Architects found that the greatest benefit for local communities and the University would be realized by consolidating athletic competition, practice and support facilities in a complex centered on a renovated and expanded Holt Arena. The solution, Bengal Village, will be constructed in phases at an estimated cost of $86 million to $102 million. For greatest efficiency, Bengal Village’s facilities will be shared among athletic programs. Some programs, such as soccer and track and field, will remain primarily at Davis Field.
YOUR ROLE Davis Field. Holt Arena. Caccia Field. These named facilities proclaim the enduring contributions that individuals have made to Idaho State University Athletics, and to the quality of life in southeastern Idaho. There is an important and very personal role for you today in Bengal Village. Bengal Village will provide more than $73 million worth of new, premier opportunities for you to be publicly honored, in perpetuity, as one whose financial gift is making the dream a reality.

BENGAL VILLAGE Bengal Village is designed as a comprehensive sports complex blending old and new. It encompasses resources for all sports as well as administrative and coaching offices, locker rooms, strength-andconditioning centers, improved spectator venues, and training-medical services for athletes. Bengal Village will be a contemporary athletics complex that will rival the best in the West. Most of the project will be financed through naming opportunities that are anticipated to attract $73 million in gifts. Your name, your family’s name, the name of a loved one — even the name of your business — can be a permanent feature of Bengal Village. Bengal Village will join existing and new facilities in a cost-effective plan. It will be centered at Holt Arena with ample parking and access. It will unite all Idaho State University athletic endeavors, and enhance the recruiting of athletes and coaches.

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY The indoor practice facility will resolve the difficulty coaches face in scheduling practice times, which often require difficult compromises among teams and other University needs. In fact, in developing the preliminary design concepts for Bengal Village, an expanded practice facility was the first request of our coaching staff. The new practice facility will include three basketball courts and a 60-yard indoor turf field. It will be immediately adjacent to locker rooms, training rooms, strength-and-conditioning facilities, and medical facilities. HOLT ARENA RENOVATION Holt Arena has proven its versatility and value to the University and the community of southeastern Idaho many times over. Since the first football game was played there on September 26, 1970, it has been a busy venue for regional and national athletic competitions, commencement ceremonies and live performances. After decades of almost nonstop use, this landmark structure — the heart of Idaho State University Athletics — needs upgrading and renovation. It needs structural improvements for safety and function. Water systems, roofing supports and spectator amenities all need repair and upgrading to meet current requirements for large public events. Holt Arena’s roof trusses, for example, will not support the equipment used in modern entertainment performances. The infrastructure does not meet current building codes or seismicsafety standards. The seating and seating supports are failing, air-conditioning and circulation systems are unreliable, and even the plumbing needs repair. Safety improvements Reinforced roof structure Reinforced foundation Reattached seating risers Americans with Disabilities Act compliance Improved safety of ingress and egress

“Pappy always said, ‘Idaho State University is happy being third, but why can’t we be first?’ I share his belief that we can be first. Pappy played football here, and Papenberg Field is a great tribute to him. It also is an honor to have my maiden name on Miller Ranch Stadium. My father and mother would be proud. This gift is very meaningful for me, and I hope many others will consider doing likewise. Idaho State University isn’t just about athletics, but what a wonderful campus atmosphere the Bengal Village will help to create.” 25
