The image is a cer tain type of conscience it is an act not only a thing it is conscience of something It ’s up to us to search for depth of conscience for a new ABC: a choice, a right, a duty in the present, for the present & for the future. (imp 2003)

The real ar t of discover y is not in finding new land, but in seeing with new eyes. (M. Proust)

Good public ar t functions as an invitation to dialogue, not an inaccessible monologue.

WHO: Davide Pan, Sculptor

+ Carlos Basanta, Sculptor + Ida Maria Pan, Multidisciplinary A.

WHY : We: Davide, Carlos and Ida, decided to join forces in the belief that possibly the merging of friendship, creative talents, expertise, practical technical knowledge, dexterity and experience could result in a less self centered creation: an artistic production of amplified strength. Most of the time “artists” create works for themselves, as a need to externalize their own vibrations without any consideration of the element “others”. An artistic work, per se, can be a very selfish thing. Public art (“public”, by definition: “Of, concerning, or affecting the community or the people”), in our opinion, should be the opposite of selfish. For us, the sole process of sharing our talents, the thoughts, the actions, the giving and the taking of ideas in order to bring about a result which focuses on “others”, makes even the conceiving part somehow “public”. A more open prospective, a desire to allow elasticity in the creative process - with the benefit of 3 points of view other than one wishes to be an attempt to approach the subject from a more social perspective. City’s public spaces are, especially in our days, a big part of everyone’s everyday living environment and we strongly feel that our focus and approach should be one of integrating art that is not only of spiritual impact utility but also of physical immediate utility: a community-based projects versus an exclusive & elite art production. Since Art has the ability to transcend the ordinary, transform the average and inspire thought, action and emotion we like to think of Public Art as an ideal medium to accomplish this and much more; a way of making our dreams come to life while beautifying our world, its public spaces and bringing art to the people. After reading the Call’s requirements, visiting, viewing, extensively photographing the Spirit Trail and the specific sections in object, we came up with some ideas & drawings and begun the brainstorming process. The key words we listed to keep in mind (a project’s abc) were and are:

a b c

accessibility bridging creative cross cultural diversity durable ecologically focused approach educational functional urban infrastructure heavy yet light integrated meet here memorable

nature open possible incorporation of seating public space safe sculptural sustainable unique vandal resistant structure visible from afar wayfinding element welcome whimsical and theatrical

S P I R I T T R A I L S E C T I O N S 1 1 & 12

We tried to focus on merging and bridging these interesting ingredients to attempt the creation of a unique and memorable recipe. As mentioned above, we feel that public art should capitalize on a shift towards accessible art for public consumption and focus on a message that speaks to ‘the people’ without presumptuousness, bridging earth and dreams in a tangible way: complex meanings synthesized in a simple alphabet of tangible elements. We have been working on small and large scale site specific creations and are strongly bound to and inspired by our surrounding environments and the impact created on both the environment itself and on the people who live it. Our approach to this project has been professional and heart felt, respecting the guidelines and requirements of the “call” and those of our own creative spirit. So... keeping all that in mind, we are and will be committed to dedicating our time, research and experience to study, design, develop, construct and install a one of a kind Spirit Trail Focal Point.

WHAT & HOW: (From theory into practice) The Fruit of this collaboration will be the creation of a series of poetic permanent sculptural forms able to live-now & live-on, both on site and in the memory (or photographs) of those who visit the trail. It wishes to be a carefully made intervention with consideration to the existing surroundings (roads, sidewalks, park, cross-walks, paving, trees, bike paths etc.) made with the care and the intent to harmonize and enhance the trail while opening a dialogue with its occasional and/or everyday users.

s t a te m e n t o f i n te n t “ W HY W H O W H AT ” Amongst ourselves we talked about history, about present, about future, art and its reflection in our lives. ... Looking for a common denominator, a sign, a form... trying to imagine a symbol(s) that we agreed would represent & summarize all the above mentioned and would work in the Spirit Trail context. Almost from the very beginning we all agreed it would involve trees. Then... the STAGES OF LIFE came to mind. We agreed that the free vibrations, or naturally harmonious relation to the fundamentals, could possibly all be “representable with a tree”... so we tried to translate “bridging, harmony, nature, light, past, present and future” into an object. A series of sculptural elements that could offer an occasion to create a moment of reflection, an enlarged presence of the present, the ideal opportunity to commemorate one’s past and plan the future. We felt closer to having reached a “concept” that could connect it all to past, present & future, to time, nature & earth. Our environment is in a constant state of flux, constantly altering the benchmarks for our actions., and we change with them. Some words we used as titles for the individual pieces reflected our thinking: ZOE The greek word that expresses the concept of life as perpetual re generation of the creating energies. CHRÓNOS – TIME Image of the cosmos, of the world of ideas, eternal, immutable and always resembling itself. PHÝSIS - NATURE / HUMUS - EARTH The tree is like the image of life in its totality: with this symbol primary vital functions are expressed (the vegetative growth) and the superior manifestations of the being (the vertebral column & the intellective and spiritual dimension of man). It represents the axes and the mystical centre of the world & the element of conjunction between the subterranean force (the roots), the reign of nature (the trunk) and the sidereal energies (the branches and leafy tops). For this reason it was considered sacred by almost all ancient peoples. We, immediately, connected our project to the trees, hence our title Treelogy, and to the number 3. Trees & the number 3 as an allegory to the ages of human life (childhood, youth & old age), set out in conformity with a tripartite pattern (going back to Edipus Enigma...). We thought and think of the 3 great partitions of terrenal life: the past (the truck with the roots) - history, the present (man - centre of the tree itself ), the future (the branches) and the connection to the concept of path and journey. This is way we conceived most of the sculptural works proposed composed of 3 parts representing such phases. Utilizing this symbol of cyclic renewal of nature thru the alternate phases of birth, growth and fecundity. ... IN OUR MINDS IT WORKS ! We agreed that the Spirit Trail, even if already rich of beautiful trees, would suit a series of sculptural elements which celebrated life thru the trees. hat better then an “trees” could carry a lot of weight, be an harmonious guiding & way finding element and an historically triumphal symbol?

W

photos of colour, energy and life shot along the Spirit Trail - JUNE 2009

Being aware that human life, human survival & human sense of esthetics derive and are, indissolubly, connected to nature - which provides, nurtures and inspires - we think and feel that celebrating plants with sculpture would enhances its poetic flavour of the trail. With a series of analogies and similarities we divided the trees in 3 parts. Parts that are attempting to place themselves in tune with the universe while trying to grasp the image, the reflection of its great “essence”. Hence the positive and negative cut outs, the game with reflections and steel buffed to a mirror finish. So to capture the energy and light of what was, what is and the forever becoming “instant”. We are confident that our collaboration can produce pieces of high emotional impact. Works capable of integrating - in an innovative way - art, history, man, manufacts and nature with the area’s lifestyle dynamics . We would be honored to be given the chance to set a tangible footprint of our own in the Spirit Trail while helping to celebrate its past and welcome its promising future.

I F Y O U R E Q U I R E A M O R E D E TA I L E D B U D G E T B R E A K D O W N PLEASE LET US KNOW!

In order to come up with a 7 line Preliminary Budget we have made a detail breakdown piece by piece, material per material, and work hour by work hour. Calculating everything from the initial prep time to the gathering of materials, the fabrication (both in studio and outsourced), the finishing & the installation. As per our calculations, our per piece breakdown, resulted in an approximate total of 412 work hours for fabrication of all the pieces. 412 hours - mostly of out own labour - equals, approximately, to 10 weeks, or 2.5 months. Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to obviate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years. The primary alloying addition in weathering steel is 2% copper. P O W D E R C O AT I N G

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin.” The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as “whiteware”, aluminium extrusions, and automobile and bicycle parts. CONCRETE IMAGES CLOCK WISE
