in this edition of microfinance americas 2009, the multilateral investment fund (mif) of the inter-american development bank (idb) and the microfinance information exchange, inc. (mix) present the annual ranking of the latin america and the caribbean's leading microfinance institutions. the report ranks mfis using a methodology which is comprised of three different pillars: outreach, efficiency, and transparency. each mfi obtains a certain score by combining the indicators that comprise each pillar. this publication also addresses the international financial crisis and its effect on the microfinance industry as well as other factors contributing to diminished growth, reduced margins and increased risk.
