A NEW YOU
CLAY in the POTTER’S HANDS
I
hosted a short-lived, low-budget cable talk show in Boston called The New You in the 1980s, and it was an intimidating and exciting experience along my journey of life. I hadn’t thought about it or even remembered it until I realized the theme of this edition would be “New Year, New You.”
I was armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications & Speech from Suffolk University, concentrating in Journalism, and I took a lot of odd jobs back then to hone my craft, which would become my life’s work. At the time, I wanted to become a war correspondent on the front lines so I could be front and center, capturing what was happening and reporting back. An internship during college at the television station WNEV (now WHDH) led to a full-time job there as an assistant assignment editor on the evening news desk before I graduated college, and that was a wild experience. To say deadlines were crucial would be an understatement. It was fast-paced, just like most of my life, and I was made for it. My stints writing copy, interviewing local politicians, and doing voice-over work at multiple radio and TV stations and film studios were low-paying. Still, I loved it all and innately understood that I needed to learn everything I could. The strange thing is I still feel exactly as I did then. Experience it all. Learn it all. Embrace it all. Born with a tenacious and curious spirit, I never embraced boredom very well.
A recent epiphany allowed me to see my life in slow motion, taking me back to those college years. I realized that I continue to practice and build a career with just about everything I learned there. Various aspects of writing, publishing, speaking, and my on-air radio and TV days laid a foundation for the VIE Speaks podcast I host. I never dreamed that so many years later, college writing workshops and the speech and debate team would equip me for the copious amount of writing and speaking that is my livelihood.
I have an affinity for and an interest in helping people when I can, and meeting a seventeen-year-old high school senior on a plane to Maine this past October for my nephew’s wedding was one instance I won’t forget. Daniel Nuñez was sitting next to my husband and me, and we struck up a conversation (in hushed tones, as people rarely talk on planes anymore, which I feel represents a dystopian DNA in a society where people don’t want to connect with strangers—but that topic is for another day). We discussed where he was going, his upcoming admissions meeting at Duke University (which he later shared went very well), and his blog, Bridge of Wills. The blog aims to unify our country amid the political angst, and I was so impressed with Daniel’s intelligence, focus, and vivacity that I asked him if wanted to write about it in VIE. He told me he is also the editor-in-chief of his school newspaper, and I said I held the same title within my magazine. The funny part of this story is that I felt we were similar and that the age gap wasn’t even there. I count Daniel as one of my new friends and am rooting for his success—he is going places! Look for his article in this issue, “Our Bridge of Wills.” He is well-spoken and wise beyond his years, representing Gen Z superbly.
Since the New Year is about renewal and achieving new goals, I want to encourage people of all ages and walks of life to stay in the game each and every year. You’re blessed to be alive and should get all you can out of your life. Thank you for indulging me in my walk down memory lane. I hope it lifted you to know that your destiny is waiting, and nothing can take it from you.
I have felt like I reinvented myself many times and that there have been more than a few iterations of myself. In reality, it was me maturing and equipping myself like clay on the potter’s wheel so I could pivot, evolve, and become what I was meant to be. I am thankful I did not have to figure it all out at once, as I keep taking the journey one step at a time while the threads of the tapestry are woven to create my story.
I’m comfortable in my skin today in a way only time and maturity can give us, but I have always been looking for my next big break along my journey. Imposter syndrome strikes sometimes, but I still feel like this. I’ve asked myself how I can still reach for more, as I find it odd. The summation is that I’m still interested and curious, and I want more experiences. I am grateful to be blessed with health and strength many years later. I don’t want to slow down—I want to continue exploring life and love.
And now, in present-day life and in the flesh, we have one of the most famous and well-known actresses in modern history gracing our health-and-wellness-focused cover! Join everyone’s best friend and media darling, Jennifer Aniston, as we delve into her favorite way to stay fit in our feature story, “Strength Redefined: Pvolve x Jennifer Aniston Ring in the New Year.”
This is the way to start the New Year off right!

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: HOW DO YOU SLOW DOWN AND “SMELL THE ROSES” IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE? WHAT ARE THE SIMPLE JOYS THAT BRING YOU THE MOST BLISS?
Speaker + Author of You Are Not Behind @meghanryanasbury
I love to start my day by reading my Bible and journaling. It helps begin the day at a slower pace, so I try to get up with enough time that I’m not in a rush. Usually, I’ll write down some things I’m grateful for, which always reminds me that there is joy to be found in every season of life. If I have time before or after work, a long walk always resets me physically and mentally. Getting outside and moving has so many benefits for your mind and body.
Founder + Editor-in-Chief of Bridge of Wills @danielnunez15_
We often forget what’s all around us in the bustle of our lives—responsibilities pile up, and it sometimes seems inescapable even for a minute. It is. The little moments in life where we stop and breathe make life beautiful, and for me, stopping to smell the roses is drifting away into The Beach Boys albums and losing myself in the music. A song sweetens even the most beautiful things in life, and a lyric from The Beach Boys’ “It’s Trying to Say” immediately jumps out of me: “Oh, I love that simple way people live from day to day.” Simple ways I cherish include sharing dinner with my family, writing my heart away, and reading history books; they provide me with a bliss that gives my life its shine.

By building up a collection of positive experiences, you create a foundation of happiness to lean on when challenges inevitably arise, reminding you of all the good things in your life. Some of my repeat positives are my morning routine, reading before bed, watching my comfort shows, going on walks when the weather permits, spending time with friends, and looking at photos!

@aukergroup_sowal Did you know: @southwalton’s Coastal Dune Lakes are a rare phenomenon that only occurs in a handful of places around the world? These freshwater lakes lie just across the white quartz sand dunes from the saltwater Gulf. After periods of high tides or heavy rainfalls, outfalls are often created where the lakes and Gulf meet and flow into one another before becoming separated again by the sand. This creates a unique brackish ecosystem for our local wildlife and flora!

PVOLVE x JENNIFER ANISTON RING in the NEW YEAR
Jennifer Aniston started Pvolve workouts in 2021 and officially joined the brand’s team in 2023.
INTERVIEW
by JORDAN STAGGS
PHOTOGRAPHY
by
ZOEY GROSSMAN
ith each new year often comes reinvigorated desires to improve, get stronger, eat well, or set new habits in motion. The team at Pvolve, a growing chain of high-end workout facilities and purveyor of at-home fitness programs and equipment, helps thousands of people reach their goals daily! One of them is our cover star, Jennifer Aniston, who has been a fan of Pvolve since 2021 and has worked directly with cofounder Rachel Katzman and director of training Dani Coleman to assemble new programs.
It’s safe to say Aniston has won the title of “America’s Sweetheart” with her many film and television projects since the sitcom Friends launched her into superstardom in 1994. The show is a multigenerational hit even among today’s younger viewers, thanks to its binge-worthiness and streaming availability. The Morning Show, Aniston’s latest hit series, launched in 2019 and gained her a 2020 SAG Award for Outstanding Lead Female Actor in a Drama Series. It has been renewed for a fourth and fifth season on Apple TV+, with Season Four expected to premiere sometime in 2025. Although not much is known about the show’s next season, which wrapped production in early December 2024, one thing is sure: Aniston is as vibrant, captivating, and beautiful as ever as she portrays seasoned news anchor Alex Levy alongside her costars Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carrell.
Filming and marketing her latest projects while traveling the world, attending countless events, working as the founder and face of LolaVie haircare, and promoting her 2024 children’s book, Clydeo Takes a Bite Out of Life (inspired by her
dog Clyde), Aniston doesn’t let her busy schedule keep her from staying fit. That’s where Pvolve takes center stage. Pvolve says that in 2021, the actress was “looking for solutions to keep exercising while facing burnout from her shooting schedule, rigorous workouts, and a back injury. Spurred by a friend’s results with Pvolve, Jen began streaming the workouts and had a transformation of her own in her relationship to fitness. The method’s equal emphasis on aesthetic results and longevity changed how she thought about working out—so much so that, in 2023, she joined the company.”
“With this workout method, I’m stronger than I’ve ever felt before,” Aniston adds. “I’m so proud to support our female founder and the beyond-talented trainers. This is one of my favorite workouts, and I’m so grateful for the team and excited for what’s to come.”
VIE was thrilled to catch up with trainer Dani Coleman to learn more about this growing fitness brand, its recent Healthy Aging Study, and Aniston’s involvement in its programs!
VIE: Can you tell us a little about your background and career?
Dani Coleman: I fell in love with fitness from a young age—my family enrolled me in dance lessons at age two. I’ve always been drawn to movement and wanted to expand my knowledge of fitness. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. After years of dancing professionally, I started experiencing pain that impacted my relationship with movement. As a result, I pursued certifications from NASM, The Gray Institute, and the IIN Institute to understand better how to cross-train more effectively. I have been in the fitness industry for over ten years now! I could not be more thrilled that my continued love for movement led me to Pvolve as their director of training.
VIE: What do you love most about Pvolve? How does it differ from other workout gear and programs available today?
DC: The Pvolve Method introduced me to a method I’d never experienced before and challenged how I thought about training. Pvolve workouts differ from other workouts as they don’t require you to “force” the movement, which is what I had been used to as a dancer. There is no need to swallow pain. Instead, the Pvolve method pairs functional movement (mimicking how your body moves in everyday life) with resistance-based equipment to improve strength, mobility, and stability. I knew this was something I wanted to share with other people, and I joined as a trainer a few months later.
VIE: As a Pvolve trainer, what is a “day in the life” like for you? What is your ultimate goal for your clients?
DC: My days are truly never the same due to the many hats I have the pleasure of wearing for Pvolve. However, a large part of my role is bringing this method to life, leading workouts on various channels like in-studio at our West Hollywood location, on our live virtual studio, on-demand, and working with some incredible VIP clients. Outside of physically moving myself, I also help train our corporate and rapidly expanding franchise trainers! No matter what I’m doing, a few things are consistent with my days: I am usually up around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m., I get to move my body more than sit, and I do all these wonderful things with the best community and peers.
VIE: Can you take us briefly through a step-by-step Pvolve workout?
DC: Pvolve workouts are dynamic in nature since they move through all three planes of motion, just like our daily movements: bending, rotating, reaching, and lunging. We pair daily movements with resistance equipment to build total-body strength, mobility, and stability to keep you moving long-term.
Our workouts always start with a warm-up, then head into different movement blocks focusing on form and feeling, ending with a cool down. Depending on which class type you choose, you can use just your body weight, one of our
thirteen pieces of incredible equipment, or heavy weights. However, no matter what workout you choose, every workout will always be different. We have an extensive learning process as trainers to ensure your experience is unmatched and elevated, providing a workout that will leave you feeling better than when you started.
Clients have been loving the holistic approach to movement that Pvolve celebrates. Our formats provide a one-stop shop for your movement needs: Strength & Sculpt, Sculpt & Burn, and Progressive Weight Training. These formats, paired with our one-of-a-kind equipment, will drive your results. I’d say Progressive Weight Training is a client favorite since it focuses on building lean muscle mass with heavier weights. It’s a guaranteed challenge and a good time!
VIE: How did you land the role as Jennifer Aniston’s trainer, and what goals did she come to Pvolve hoping to accomplish?
DC: After Jennifer’s friend introduced her to Pvolve during the pandemic in 2021, she was immediately hooked on Pvolve’s virtual classes. In mid-2022, Jennifer reached out regarding private lessons, and the rest is history.
Over these two years together, we have continued to focus on increasing her total body strength. We have done that by training in all three of our formats weekly: Strength & Sculpt, Sculpt & Burn, and Progressive Weight Training. It has been incredible to see her strength increase with heavier weights specifically. Of course, we always use some of her favorite pieces of equipment, like the p.band, gliders, and p.3 trainer!
VIE: We love that Jen’s recent campaign with Pvolve highlights healthy aging and encourages women of all ages to exercise! What are some of the best habits women can adopt to help them age with strength and stamina?
DC: Start small and set realistic goals. It sounds so simple, but I truly find it’s the biggest obstacle most of my clients struggle with. It can be fifteen minutes to an hour, two days or six days a week, but work with what you realistically have timewise in your schedule to get your workouts done. Overall, consistent exercise and gradually increasing weight are great habits women can adopt to help them age with strength and stamina.
Focus on building muscle mass by lifting heavier weights! Starting at age 30, women naturally lose 3 to 5 percent of muscle mass per decade. However, according to the Healthy Aging Study, Pvolve’s workouts are proven to help offset this muscle loss. According to the study, women in the 12-week Pvolve program experienced a significant increase in lean muscle mass and improved their lower body strength by 19 percent.
Along with mobility and stability (which also improved for the Pvolve group), balance and flexibility are vital for helping to reduce the risk of falls later in life.
In addition to studio locations across the US, the Pvolve Method offers virtual classes and a unique thirteen-piece equipment package so clients can keep up with their workouts at home or on the go!
Pvolve’s director of training, Dani Coleman
Also, healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are linked to a lowered risk of stroke and heart disease—the number one killer of women. Women in the Pvolve group showed a significant decrease in cholesterol levels and triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood).
VIE: Tell us a little about Jen’s Spring Challenge in 2024. How did you work together to develop this?
DC: Since Jennifer has partnered with Pvolve these last few years, she’s felt stronger, more mobile, and more defined. As a result of her passion for Pvolve, we created the Spring Challenge—a Jen-inspired workout routine that includes some of our favorite workout sessions and mimics our daily training schedule. Our goal with the Spring Challenge was to encourage more people to move and experience this incredible method firsthand!
VIE: Tell us about your experience on the Today Show!
DC: Being on the Today Show (twice!) was truly a dream come true! It was absolutely surreal to be on a show that I’d grown up watching. The best part was that I had the pleasure of standing beside our chief training officer, Antonietta Vicario, and our director of programming, Maeve McEwen, who worked fiercely beside me in building this magical method!
VIE: Getting into shape can be daunting. What is your number-one piece of advice for anyone starting a new fitness journey, whether they’re starting to exercise for the first time or want to try a new program?
DC: The first step into getting in shape can be intimidating; however, there are a few ways to stay on track with your fitness journey.
“THE FIRST STEP INTO GETTING IN SHAPE CAN BE INTIMIDATING; HOWEVER, THERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO STAY ON TRACK WITH YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY.”

1. Set a specific goal that is tangible for your lifestyle and has a specific game plan. The more in the weeds with the details you can be, the better! Think of all the obstacles and excuses that could possibly come up against your goal and create a game plan that helps tackle those.
2. Visual reminders! For me, that is a post-it on my door that I see every day before I leave for work. Be above the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality.
3. Set rewards at the 30-, 60-, and 90-day markers! Sticking to your goals and game plan should feel rewarding, and you should acknowledge that accomplishment with yourself!
4. Accountability. That can be in the form of a friend, a support group, social media, etc. Find someone who will celebrate your wins with you and help you tackle your goals.
And always remember: It’s not what you do, but how you do it. Whatever gets you up and moving, do it! Just try to do it with good form so you can keep doing it.
VIE: What’s coming up for Pvolve? Any new programs, products, or collaborations you’d like to share with our readers?
DC: The Pvolve Trainers are always hard at work curating the next thing for our amazing community! Be on the lookout in January for the most recent project that we have been hard at work developing!

GEN Z PODCASTER SADIE SUTTON on MENTAL
HEALTH, THERAPY, and LEARNING to LIVE WELL
She Persisted podcast host Sadie Sutton

INTERVIEW
BY MORGAN POWER | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SADIE
As we approach this new year focused on growth and well-being, the VIE team had the pleasure of sitting down with Sadie Sutton, host of the She Persisted podcast and a mental health guru, for a powerful conversation covering all things mental health. From navigating stress and anxiety to embracing self-confidence, Sutton’s knowledge offers tools and meaningful advice to help individuals prioritize their mental well-being in the year ahead.
In this deep dive, Sutton shares details from her journey, thoughts on how mental health connects with overall wellness, and beneficial strategies to prioritize mental health in 2025. Whether you want to build resilience, better manage your emotions, or understand the importance of mental health advocacy, this interview is a must-read for anyone looking to begin the year with clarity and confidence.
VIE: Tell us the story behind founding the She Persisted podcast. We would love to hear more about your story and what inspired you to create this outlet!
Sadie Sutton: I struggled a lot with my mental health as a teenager—specifically, severe depression and anxiety. I ended up receiving a year and a half of intensive treatment during my freshman and sophomore years of high school. I was acutely aware of how lucky I was to have access to such incredible resources, but I also knew not all teens needed that level of support. Additionally, many of the skills and insights I learned could have prevented a lot of my suffering. I was also incredibly hopeless when I started treatment. I didn’t believe I was capable of recovery and didn’t believe I had enough autonomy as a teen to make meaningful changes in my mental health. I quickly learned this wasn’t the case at all, and I wanted to create the resource I needed and be the voice I wished I’d heard when I was struggling. I started She Persisted at the end of my treatment journey in 2019 and have been releasing episodes ever since!
VIE: What is your creative process for coming up with topics to discuss on your podcast? What has been your favorite topic to touch on thus far?
SS: I am two hundred episodes into podcasting, so there are a few topics I haven’t touched on. I jumped at the chance to have experts on the podcast who can shed light on a specific area of mental health, such as residential care for eating disorders or positive outcomes after depression. I reach out to many guests whose research I come across or individuals I see talking about mental health on social media. My solo episodes are related to what I’m learning at Penn or the ways I’ve recently been taking care of my mental health. Last year, I did quite a few episodes on Positive Psychology while taking Dr. Martin Seligman’s class, and this year, you will be getting a “Grad School Applications 101” episode because that has been a big focus as of late!
VIE: How did you come up with the name She Persisted? How does this name align with what you speak about on the podcast?
SS: Most people associate “Nevertheless, she persisted” with the feminist movement, which adopted the phrase after its use in a senate hearing referring to Elizabeth Warren. I was oblivious to this significance when I first heard it at fifteen years old. For me, it held sentimental value due to a very formative experience during my time in treatment. While my parents were touring therapeutic boarding schools, they came across a small shop in Whitefish, Montana, that carried novelty shirts and mugs. Many had vulgar jokes on them, but my dad saw a T-shirt with “Nevertheless, She Persisted” on it. He called me immediately and said he was so struck by this saying and how synonymous it was with the journey I was on. He expressed how proud he was of me for how I was investing in my mental health and that despite the discomfort of doing the work, the challenge of being away from home, and the pain I was experiencing, I was persisting. When I started at the therapeutic boarding school, we were only allowed to communicate via written letters. In an homage to this saying, my dad and I signed every letter: “PS: Nevertheless, She Persisted.” It reminded me that his pride and support were unwavering, and my commitment to my mental
SUTTON
health was steadfast. A year later, when I started the podcast She Persisted, it felt extremely fitting. I still find it to be the perfect encapsulation of the podcast; despite the many challenges we go through with our mental health, we persist!
VIE: As a UPenn student studying psychology, what resources do you recommend that have worked best for you? How have your classroom experiences shaped the work you produce on your podcast?
SS: The further I get in my academic career, the more nuanced my understanding of mental health interventions becomes. It’s the age-old adage, “The more you know, the less you understand.” In the context of the podcast, this means I can have more confidence in the advice I’m sharing. My insights are not solely based on my lived experiences but also on a growing understanding of the literature. For individuals who want to pursue a career in psychology, I recommend getting involved in research as early as possible! Working in a lab and embedding yourself in the research community will give you incredible scaffolding and support to reach your goals.
VIE: What was it like sharing your experience within the “troubled teen industry” in the New York Times earlier this year? What do you wish more people knew about these institutions and boarding programs? How was this different from your experience at 3East at McLean Hospital?
SS: Surreal—so much of the troubled teen industry involves stripping power and autonomy from students in the name of “therapy.” To be able to speak out about my experience on such a prominent and impactful platform was incredibly validating, cathartic, and empowering. It’s crucial that parents especially understand that not all mental health treatment is created equal. Not all interventions have decades of research demonstrating their efficacy. I experienced this firsthand as a teen; I spent fourteen weeks at 3East at McLean Hospital—the leading program for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for adolescent girls. DBT is an evidence-based intervention, and the 3East team is one of the most compassionate, competent groups of clinicians in the field. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Conversely, I spent fourteen months at a therapeutic boarding school in Montana—Chrysalis. The program lacked proper oversight and didn’t adhere to an evidence-based model. They have since been sued for child sexual abuse and misconduct. I advise parents to look for a program attached to a university or large hospital. Note that research doesn’t support long-term treatment that removes teens from their home communities—short-term interventions can be
highly effective. Similarly, ensure the program uses evidence-based interventions such as DBT or CBT. Unsilenced.org also has incredible resources for finding a good program and what red flags you should be aware of.
VIE: Tell us about the anonymous question submission on your website. We would love to hear more about this!
SS: Asking for help requires an incredible amount of vulnerability and can be quite daunting, especially when you don’t know the person. I want listeners to feel comfortable asking for advice about specific situations or things they’re struggling with, and many would prefer to do that anonymously. It’s also important to me to create episodes that align with what my audience is looking for support on. I am always open to topic requests!
VIE: Who have been some of your favorite guests on the podcast? What is the best piece of advice you have been given regarding wellness?
SS: That’s like asking me to choose a favorite child! I can’t pick one, but some of my favorite conversations were with Dr. David Yeager, Dr. Johnathan Rottenberg, Dr. Jeffrey Hall, Dr. Olivo & Dr. Seidler, Kristen Carder, and Britt Frank. One piece of advice that stands out is from Dr. Blaise Aguirre—the founding medical director of 3East and a Harvard Medical School professor. During our conversation in 2020, he told me, “Life is impermanent, and that impermanence will be on your side.” This has stuck with me ever since, and I go back to this mantra on a regular basis. It’s a reminder that no matter how much pain you’re in, no matter how intense the struggle that you’re experiencing is, it will pass. Everything in life is variable, and this is especially true of our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This has brought me a lot of peace when I’m feeling an intense emotion or going through a stressful period.
VIE: How do you recommend supporting friends or family who might be interested in bettering their mental health? How can you navigate being a compassionate listener while knowing the turning point to help connect this person to more supportive resources?
SS: One of the first things I learned in therapy was the oxygen mask principle. When you’re on the plane, they tell you to put your oxygen mask on before helping your child or those around you. This is because if you put on the child’s mask and you pass out, the child is breathing but unable to navigate the situation.
You now have two people struggling. However, if you put your oxygen mask on first, even if the child passes out, you can put their oxygen mask on and get both parties off the plane safely. This is especially true for mental health—you can’t pour from an empty cup. So first, make sure you’re in a spot to support someone else’s struggle. Another thing to remember is you can only help someone as much as they want to help themselves. Listening, validating, and offering advice can go a long way, but it’s up to the other person to ask for help and implement your advice if applicable. I think the best thing you can do is validate—tell them it makes sense they feel the way they’re feeling—and offer resources. Lastly, people underestimate the value of just being a good friend. Knowing you can count on someone for a good laugh or a fun afternoon together is invaluable!
VIE: Tell us about DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and who you might recommend this to.
SS: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was developed by Marsha Linehan and her team at the University of Washington for individuals struggling with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and
I still find it to be the perfect encapsulation of the podcast; despite the many challenges we go through with our mental health, we persist!
extreme suicidal ideation. Many therapists didn’t want these patients on their caseloads—they were highly suicidal and not super committed to the therapeutic process. Linehan found that when you validated their experience and said, “Your life sucks, I get it,” they would get angry and say, “So you can’t

help me?” But when you told them, “Here is what you’re going to do to make your life better,” they also got mad and said, “This isn’t my fault; why do I have to fix it?” DBT is built on dialectics—the idea that two seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time. For instance, you can accept your current reality and work to change it. Or you might be trying your best but can also do better. Alongside these core philosophies, DBT has an extensive set of coping skills to teach clients. You learn how to regulate your emotions, be interpersonally effective, tolerate distress, and be more mindful. It gives you tactile skills to implement when distress inevitably arises; having those is a game changer. What also makes DBT unique is how effective it is. There’s a ton of research showing how consistently it works with individuals with BPD, depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses.
VIE: Say someone is struggling with spiraling anxious or depressive thoughts. What are three of your favorite tools for getting into your body and processing your emotions in a healthy way rather than becoming avoidant or obsessive?
SS: The TIPP skill is incredible for a crisis. This skill decreases physiological distress so you can work through the mental side. The “T” in TIPP stands for temperature—you submerge your face in a bowl of ice water. It stimulates your mammalian diving reflex and immediately decreases your heart and breathing rate. You might have seen this on TikTok—it’s becoming super popular, and I love it!
Regarding thought spirals, avoidance will amplify your anxiety. It can be tough, but sitting with those thoughts is the best thing you can do. After you get out of a state of physical anxiety, follow that thought to see what the core belief is. Are you scared of rejection? Do you feel like you’re not good enough? What is the true fear? Understanding that takes a lot of the power away, and you can then check the facts and see if that fear is even accurate in that situation.
VIE: What are some ways you recommend raising awareness for mental health, especially breaking the stigma around teen and young adult mental health?
SS: I think how we individually speak about mental health has the potential to make the most significant impact. Model the vulnerability you hope to see in others, validate the experiences of your teens, and promote the resources others may need. Gen Z does an incredible job of this—we’re extremely vulnerable about our experiences, and it’s made us feel a lot less isolated with our mental health.
VIE: What do you hope to see for the future of the She Persisted podcast? What are your future goals and aspirations within the mental health space, especially post-graduation?
SS: I have so many goals for She Persisted. I am applying to Clinical Psychology PhD programs and plan to become a clinical psychologist. I want to continue to uplevel the insights and resources I bring to the community while speaking from my lived experiences. Of course, I will keep podcasting, but I also hope to write a book, launch a product, and create more widely accessible evidence-based resources for the community.

And a few rapid-fire questions just to learn more about Sadie:
What’s your favorite stress-management hack as a student?
It’s all about your daily habits! I think your daily routines should keep you on an upward trajectory when you go on autopilot. Make it easy for yourself—surround yourself with supportive people, get enough sleep, work movement into your schedule, and put yourself in contexts that support your well-being.
One misconception about teen mental health that drives you crazy?
That Gen Z is “weak.” Vulnerability requires an incredible amount of strength, and I’ve yet to see a more vulnerable generation.
An undervalued quality that you wish more people would embody?
I have to say persistence! You’ve survived 100 percent of your worst days; you’re incredibly persistent!
What is the next place on your bucket list to travel to?
Anywhere with my family that requires a pit stop in San Francisco so I can see my dogs, Piper and Posey!
What do you love most about your job?
It’s unbelievably empowering! Hearing from listeners, being vulnerable to my community, and learning from podcast guests is an unparalleled experience.
A daily habit that has radically transformed your life?
I love getting ready in the morning! Doing my hair and makeup while looking outside my window brings me so much joy. It helps me start the day on a high note and get into a productive mentality.
Thank you!

A NEW GOAL FOR A NEW YEAR
BY MEGHAN RYAN ASBURY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA SODERHOLM
Something about a new year makes me feel behind in life.
Don’t get me wrong—I am a goal-oriented girl through and through. I love sitting down and planning for the year ahead. I’m determined to make changes physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and I enjoy dreaming about how to do so. There’s something about the turning of the calendar that makes me feel hopeful, like the possibilities for growth and change are here.
Yet, as the holidays end and January begins, I’m reminded of all the ways I failed to accomplish what I set out to do the year before. I never trained for
that half marathon nor hit my very reasonable business goals. There are piles of books I never got around to reading, and my savings account doesn’t hold as much as I hoped it would by now.
On a deeper level, I feel like I’m not where I thought I would be in life at this point. My bad habits haven’t changed, relationships aren’t where I want them to be, and things I longed for and prayed for didn’t happen.
Meanwhile, I’ve watched friends get what I wanted and seemingly hit all their goals. Pregnancies, engagements, beautiful weddings, promotions, and vacations flood my social media news feeds. Curated highlight reels of acquaintances and strangers have me questioning whether or not I accomplished anything in the past 365 days.
No wonder I feel so behind.
Maybe you’ve felt this way, too—like everyone else has figured out how to get what they want, and you did not get the memo. It can start to feel like things work out easily for everyone but you.
When confronted with feeling behind, I start to question if God’s plan for my life is as good as I hoped. I know from personal experience and what the Bible says that he has good plans for my life (see Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28). But when I look around and don’t see that playing out how I want it to, I’m tempted to believe I need to take matters into my own hands to try to catch up to where I want to be. As you can imagine, that rarely ends well. So what do we do in those moments? Is it possible to not feel so behind?
I’ve come to realize so often that the best moments in life are passing us by because we are too busy focusing on what we want to be different. We think the good life is “out there” or will be ours “someday.” But we’ve got one life this side of heaven, and it’s right here, right now. For so long, I was convinced my life was incomplete until my circumstances changed. It wasn’t just keeping me from experiencing the good things in front of me—it kept me from experiencing the abundance God had for me.
I can imagine many of you have felt behind and like you will never be able to “catch back up.” But I want you to know: you don’t have to live this way.
One of my favorite Bible verses is Psalm 16:6: “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”
If we believe God’s word is true and that He has put us right here, right now, on purpose, then we can rest knowing that we are not behind. What He has for us here is both pleasant and delightful.
“BEFORE YOU GO INTO THE REST OF THIS YEAR, REMEMBER THIS: YOU ARE NOT BEHIND.”
Jesus did not die on the cross for us to get stuck; He died so we would have life and live more abundantly, in this life and for eternity. (John 10:10)
You are not missing out on potentially bigger and better tomorrows. But you may be missing out on the life God is calling you to today.
So, what if we lived differently?
We don’t have to resort to the defeat of feeling stuck or whiteknuckle our way through life trying to get ahead. We can enjoy what’s right in front of us and trust God is leading us where He wants us to go.
In the meantime, how do we stop feeling like we are behind and live as Psalm 16:6 tells us? Here are three practical things you can try today:
1. Be grateful: Gratitude immediately helps me feel more at ease with where I am. It’s simple—write down the first three good things you can think of and thank God for each of them. It doesn’t have to be “big” stuff, but once I write it down, I’m already more hopeful about what is ahead.
2. Quit comparing: Comparison is rooted in coveting, which is a sin. So get rid of all the places you’re tempted to experience this. Confess it to God and/or a trusted friend. Don’t play nice here— actively find ways to stop looking at what others have as a measure of what you don’t have.
3. Remember God’s faithfulness: Reflecting on how God has been faithful to you in the past helps
make you more hopeful that he is working in your life now and will continue to in the future. The Bible constantly charges us to “remember” who God is and what he has done.
I’m still going to set some goals this year. I want to finally train for that half marathon and read the books on my list. I want to remain hopeful that some of
the dreams I have for the year ahead will come true. Still, I’m choosing not to get discouraged when things don’t go as I expect or be distracted when it seems like other people are moving ahead of me.
Before you go into the rest of this year, remember this: You are not behind. You are here—right where God has you. He has not forgotten you. He has a good plan and purpose for where you are right now.

CHILDREN’S VOLUNTEER HEALTH NETWORK KICKS OFF 2025
Children’s Volunteer Health Network, Inc. is a faith-based 501(c)(3) organization established in 2005 to improve the health and well-being of the area’s children. The mission of CVHN is to eliminate the barriers to accessible and affordable healthcare for children in need through mobile solutions and community partnerships. CVHN provides comprehensive dental health care services through its Mobile Dental Clinic facilities, serving local elementary schools and other community partners.
As most nonprofits do, CVHN relies on donations, grants, and volunteers to keep its programs running, including its two mobile dental clinics that now serve over twenty thousand kids. You can help these initiatives by attending CVHN events, donating online, or signing up to assist the team! We’re so excited to celebrate twenty years of not only CVHN in 2025 but also the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF), one of the organization’s leading fundraising partners.

Silent and live auctions will include unforgettable experiences, with special guest auctioneer Mike Hoss—the “voice of the New Orleans Saints” as the team’s play-by-play announcer—bringing the energy and fun to the live auction on Friday night under the tent.
Saturday afternoon’s bocce ball tournament has been a crowd favorite during Soiree on the Bay for the past three years, as teams compete to see who will take home bragging rights and have their names commemorated in CVHN history. Meanwhile, gather beneath the live oaks and get ready to dance to music by the Tip Tops Band, a jazzy group out of Mobile, Alabama. Branded as one of the top party bands in the South, their mix of Motown, soul, funk, and pop never fails to get guests out on the floor.
“CVHN is so thrilled not only to be presenting our fourth annual Soiree on the Bay event but also to celebrate our twentieth anniversary in style as we turn it into a Soiree Emerald Gala this year!” says executive director Megan Trent. “Being part of this incredible organization has been one of the great honors of my life. The people who support us and our team of amazing dental
professionals, staff, and volunteers are nothing short of heroes who do everything they can to help the children and families in our community. Thank you to everyone who has donated their money, time, and energy to CVHN over the past twenty years—we couldn’t do this without you, and we hope you’ll all come to celebrate with us at the gala in March!”
The organization shares its twentieth birthday with another fantastic area nonprofit, the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF). This entity also works tirelessly year-round to support various children’s charities in Northwest Florida, including CVHN. DCWAF will host its anniversary auction weekend April 25–27, 2025, with a curation of wine dinners, auctions, tastings, and more.
Stay tuned as details unfold and more sponsors join the party for these incredible weekends!

Our Bridge
Elections nowadays are associated with partisan fighting and media coverage with their own biases and agendas that serve to divide us further. This division is something that’s weighed heavily on my mind: at home, my dad laments how extremes have been allowed to seep into our politics. In the mill of elections that keeps churning, where one campaign ends and another begins, one conversation spurred me to action. In this particularly passionate conversation during the 2022 midterm cycle, shortly after Roe v. Wade was overturned and division reached a fever pitch, Dad commented that America needed a “bridge of wills” to help unite the nation. That line was the fuse that ignited the whole Bridge of Wills project.
The Bridge of Wills project began with a line and grew into the idea of how I could practice my passion—writing—while helping unite America in a
singular space. I thought carefully about that and, looking around the landscape, felt that writing of this kind was sorely lacking, so I began. My dad helped me set up a website, we commissioned our first logo through Fiverr, and I got to work.
I look at my first article, a dissection of the 2020 election results, with mixed pride: pride that it was my first, mixed with my brain now seeing a million ways I could do it better. That’s how I continued through three website redesigns and more articles I wrote whenever I felt passionate about something in the news cycle. Initially covering only news in politics, I worked to compile a variety of sources to create a balanced worldview, but my writing soon extended to historical elements.
Including history in the project felt like a natural extension of current politics. The crowning jewel of that effort was my “Nixon Resigns” article, which detailed the events of the resignation of President

Nixon. It is my favorite article in our first two-year output, although I was still a one-man show then; the “our” came into play soon after it was published.
Our Team
About two and a half years of publishing Bridge of Wills alone revealed that I needed help structuring myself: an article would, on average, take about five hours to write, including combining sources and reading through them to a standard that would make me proud. Articles would cycle through draft after draft because I like to handwrite everything first, which is a staple of my process. With writing, editing, and revising, I would often pass that fivehour base mark. I knew having a team would keep me accountable and improve the quality of my work.
I brought together my closest peers and friends; now, our lineup comprises a team I feel proud to work with. You can learn more about it through our
“Why United?” article. I owe a lot to Alyssa, Lya, Micheal, and Felix. Our team of two publicists and three writers has produced a prolific forty articles since we got together in May 2024, and delegating the work among us was key: Lya Quintana Nuñez, who has been the lead on media and article design as chief publicist, helped organize our Instagram @bridgeofwills to include colorful designs and graphics. Micheal Jimenez, a fellow senior at my school, helps Lya design colorful graphics. Alyssa Leon, who I met through volunteering and who has grown into a close friend, is my vice editor, who revises my articles and with whom I work to write joint articles like our “Presidential Debate” piece. Felix Puig Seppalainen helps write and edit his own articles; I met Felix through a leadership conference. Felix is from New Jersey, and we bonded over a shared love of politics. He’s become a deep and cherished friend. Our team assembled just in time for the 2024 election and soon embarked on our biggest project.

far, Alyssa edited the “State of the Race” series and helped with the reports.
I hope to grow Bridge of Wills into a national platform where we publish notable public figures from all facets of the political spectrum to inform the American people and examine all sides of an issue.
Election coverage within traditional media is based upon the “horse race,” where the “topline” (the top number you see in polling) is reported, and very little else is covered. Our BOW team endeavored to change that: with “State of the Race,” we wrote every Monday or Tuesday about the happenings of the race across the country. “State of the Race” wasn’t just about the presidential race; it extended to the House, Senate, and governor positions. Looking at polling, averages, trends, and early voting data, we made our trend reports according to the results from across the country.
Lya and Micheal helped create the media and covers. Felix, who’s tuned into politics, advised me on the ratings, and when he felt bias was too
Creating and working on Bridge of Wills has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. As I progress through the final stage of high school into college and beyond, I want to continue the mission of uniting America. I hope to grow Bridge of Wills into a national platform where we publish notable public figures from all facets of the political spectrum to inform the American people and examine all sides of an issue. Even though I’m about to turn eighteen and still in high school, I hope Bridge of Wills grows and that we reach as many people with our mesage as possible.

Simple Recipes for On-the-Go Nutrition
Let’s be honest:
sometimes, our eating habits veer toward not-so-healthy options simply because it’s more convenient.
That’s why the VIE team reached out to some healthy recipe authors to curate a list of easy meals and snacks, most of which can be prepped in advance so you can grab and go!
Annie Fenn, MD, author of the cookbook Brain Health Kitchen: Preventing Alzheimer’s Through Food , shared the perfect breakfast smoothie and a delicious pancake recipe designed to keep you energized and improve cognitive function. Blogger and holistic private chef Sophia Victoria Vegan came in clutch with an easy “crunch ball” snack you can take anywhere, while the wellness experts at The Ranch retreats in Malibu and Hudson Valley shared a raspberry cookie we can’t wait to try for dessert.
Whether you need a light breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up, you can’t go wrong with these items that will make you feel good about snacking in the new year!
Coffee Berry Smoothie
Coffee and berry flavors work surprisingly well together in this bracing, not-too-sweet smoothie.
Some high-quality coffees have fruit-forward flavors. Ethiopian coffee, for example, smells like blueberries! That’s because coffee beans are technically a fruit. The beans are actually the pit of a cherry-like fruit now being studied for memory-enhancing properties.
Besides giving you a double dose of berry flavors, there’s an abundance of polyphenols from the coffee and the berries, making this a smoothie that quells inflammation and combats oxidative stress in the brain. Hemp seeds blend up creamy and add omega-3 fatty acids and protein.

In the following order, layer the bananas, blueberries, hemp seeds, milk, and coffee in a blender. Blend on high speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Divide between two glasses and top with more hemp seeds, if you like.
Tips
To store bananas in the freezer for making smoothies, peel them and cut them into four pieces each. Store in a zip-top bag or other airtight container for up to 6 months.
For a thicker smoothie, use ice-cold coffee; for a thinner one, use room-temperature coffee.

Stirring
cooked quinoa
into batter transforms pancakes into something unique and delicious.
These are fluffy yet hearty with a delightfully chewy texture. Hazelnut flour enhances quinoa’s nutty notes while boosting vitamin E and adding more fiber. Both ingredients are protein-rich, too, meaning they’ll sustain you long after breakfast is over.
• 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup, plus more for drizzling (optional)
• 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
• Extra-virgin olive oil, for the pan
• 2 large apples, such as Gala or Honeycrisp, thinly sliced
• 4 tsp hemp seeds
• Plain, unsweetened yogurt (coconut, whole milk, or nut-based)
Directions
Pancakes don’t like to wait, so it’s ideal to use a large griddle to cook them if you want to serve a group at once. Alternatively, use a small skillet and serve in batches.
If you want to serve the pancakes all together, set an oven rack in the center position and preheat the oven to 300ºF (150ºC) to keep them warm while you cook.
Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil and add the quinoa. Boil, uncovered, until the quinoa is fluffy and tender, about 12 minutes. Drain well. You should have about 1 1/2 cups (215g).
Meanwhile, whisk together the quinoa flour, hazelnut flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl until no lumps remain.
Whisk the milk, egg, lemon juice, maple syrup, and vanilla in a medium bowl until combined.
Tips
Even if the surface seems crowded, layer as many apple slices as will fit on each pancake. You can replace the apple slices with 1 cup (190 g) blueberries or 1 cup (170 g) chocolate chips.
Though boiling quinoa like pasta takes only about 12 minutes, these pancakes come together in a snap with leftover cooked quinoa.
Quinoa flour adds even more toasty quinoa flavor and is a nice addition to your whole-grain pantry. If you don’t have any, use white wholewheat or oat flour instead. (See the DIY oat flour on page 132 of Brain Health Kitchen.)
Pour over the flour mixture and fold until no streaks of flour remain. Fold in the cooked quinoa.
Let the batter sit for 10 minutes.
Heat a griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat and coat with a few drops of oil. Pour in 1/3 cup (80 ml) of the batter and arrange as many apple slices as will fit on the surface. Cook until the underside is crispy and brown and the center is set, 4 to 5 minutes. Using a rigid spatula, carefully flip the pancake and cook until it’s golden brown on the other side and the center is dry, another 3 to 4 minutes. Serve right away or transfer to a plate and place in the oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining batter.
Serve hot, sprinkled with 1 teaspoon hemp seeds per serving, topped with a dollop of yogurt, and drizzled with maple syrup, if you like.

These chocolatey, no-bake snack balls are easy to make
and irresistibly delicious!
Once chilled, the outer layer forms a luscious chocolate shell, giving way to a sweet and salty filling of gooey caramel-like dates, creamy sunflower butter, and crunchy rice puffs.
The perfect snack to satisfy your sweet tooth and give you an energizing boost!
• 1/2 cup (heaping) sunflower butter or your favorite nut butter
• 2 Tbsp (heaping) flax seeds
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1/2 tsp sea salt
• 1/4 tsp cinnamon
• 1 cup crispy brown rice cereal
• 1 cup dark chocolate chips for chocolate coating
Directions
Place the pitted dates in a food processor and blend until a sticky ball forms.
Add sunflower butter, vanilla extract, flax seeds, sea salt, and cinnamon to the food processor. Blend until combined, occasionally scraping the sides to ensure everything is properly mixed. The mixture should become crumbly; if it’s still a sticky ball, keep blending.
Next, add the crispy puffed rice and pulse a couple of times until incorporated, leaving some pieces of puffed rice intact.
Once everything is evenly distributed, it’s time to roll the balls. With clean hands, roll about two tablespoons of the mixture into a ball slightly smaller than a golf ball. You should get around 16 to 20 balls, depending on size preference. Place the balls onto a parchment-lined plate and chill in the freezer while you melt the chocolate.
Melt the chocolate by microwaving it in a small microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between. Make sure no water gets into the chocolate so it doesn’t clump up. (You can also use the double boiler method for the chocolate.) It should only take about 1 to 2 minutes to melt (don’t overheat or the chocolate will burn).
Using a fork, dip each ball into the melted chocolate until fully coated. (You can drizzle chocolate on top instead, but coating it is quick and thorough.)
After coating in chocolate, sprinkle a small pinch of flaky sea salt on top of each ball.
Enjoy one right away (to test how tasty they are), then put the rest in the fridge for about an hour to let the chocolate harden fully.

This Michelin-quality food delivery service doesn’t compromise health or flavor.
ut of all the areas of life that require attention and focus, our health can often be the first thing to fall by the wayside. Even though I love spending time in the kitchen, home-cooked meals can feel like just another task on my to-do list—literally adding more to my plate. Eating out at restaurants is a challenge for the health-conscious consumer looking to avoid seed oils, nasty additives, and excessive fat and sugar. And quite frankly, most meal prep services don’t satisfy the tastebuds when it comes to flavor, high-quality ingredients, and variety. Any self-proclaimed foodie looking to balance time spent behind the kitchen counter with a busy schedule understands this dilemma.
Methodology cofounder and CEO Julie Nguyen not only resonated with this pain point—she had lived it. “I am almost ten years in and still don’t feel like I’ve made it because there are always so many exciting things in the pipeline that my cofounder and I can’t wait to launch,” she expresses. “But every day, multiple times a day, I feel as though I am doing exactly the work I was born to do. I was forty pounds heavier and struggled with so many autoimmune health issues in my twenties. I will never forget how painful it was living that way every day—crying in dressing rooms, declining invitations to go wakeboarding to avoid wearing a swimsuit in public, constantly scratching eczema on my arms, having to put concealer on 80 percent of my face, and sleeping in makeup because my face was covered in acne. Optimizing my diet has transformed every aspect of my health, quality of life, and confidence, and I feel motivated every day to bring this gift of healing via food as medicine to as many people as possible.”
Methodology is an innovative meal service delivering satisfying, Michelin-quality dishes prepared without seed oils, refined sugar, gluten, or dairy. Each meal contains 25 to 50 grams of protein, and both plant-based and animal options are sustainably sourced. With
a rotating menu, each week’s delivery is a true delight. Think dishes like Raspberry & Orange Dreamy Overnight Oats, Organic Hodo Soy Tofu Hibachi Immunity Bowl with Ube, and Wild Blue Crab & Prawn Cakes with Sherry Glazed Heirloom Rainbow Carrots, Balsamic Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Garnet Yams, and Avocado Tartar Sauce. Through Methodology’s Signature Program, you can select a weekly meal service ranging from one to five days, which includes daily matcha sachets, apple cider vinegar shrubs, and signature protein truffles.
I tried Methodology’s Signature 5-Day Reset, and my expectations were exceeded. Each meal is packaged in reusable and recyclable boxes; the glass containers with pink lids are a Methodology signature. Every day is designed for you to receive your maximized protein and fiber intake, so I never went hungry between meals. The consistency was on par, the protein truffles were scrumptious, and every flavor combination was wonderfully executed. Not only will your fridge rival Kris Jenner’s, but you’ll also be genuinely excited about each day’s lineup of exquisite dishes. I can’t think of a better way to start the new year as your most vibrant self.
Read on for an exclusive Q&A with Julie Nguyen to learn more about the brand’s evolution, her favorite healthy habits, and insider wellness tips.
VIE: Tell us a little bit about your recipe formulation process. How do you decide what recipes to serve next? And, how does your plant-forward, high-protein approach set you apart from other meal delivery services?
JN: Our recipes are inspired by my own personal experiences, usually coming from my travels, something I enjoyed at a restaurant, or something I saw online. We take delicious recipes and Methodology-ify them by improving their macronutrient ratios to be lower calorie
and higher protein, along with increasing vegetable quantity and variety while decreasing or eliminating foods that are more processed or refined or less nutrient dense. For example, a dish on this week’s menu is Peruvian Lomo Saltado, which I had for the first time during my 2021 visit to Peru. The traditional dish is a sirloin stir fry served with french fries and rice–not totally unhealthy but in its original form is a bit too high-calorie and low vegetable for
our menu. We slightly altered the ratios of ingredients in the dish by adding broccolini and increasing the bell peppers, reducing the french fries and baking them rather than fry them, using grass-fed lean steak, removing the rice, cooking it in avocado oil rather than vegetable oil and using oil sparingly, and not adding any refined sugar. We also thought it would taste better with Murasake sweet potatoes for a touch of sweetness rather than regular white
potatoes. In the end, you still get all the best parts of the dish – the umami, comforting flavors of the steak stir fry in the Chinese-flavored sauce balanced with the sweetness of the potatoes, but it’s all bundled up in a dish that will help you look and feel your best.
VIE: We are so inspired by the thoughtful choices you make at Methodology, from sustainable glass
jars to sourcing all ingredients from local farmers in California. What role does integrity play in your business?
Julie Nguyen: Integrity is critical at Methodology because few things impact our health more than what we eat. We set up systems and checks at all levels of Methodology to ensure each team member does what they say they’ll do and follows instructions precisely to ensure our members are not only safe (particularly related to food allergies) but achieve the health goals for which they came to us, whether it’s weight loss, recovering from a health issue, or simply optimizing their overall health. This is one of the reasons we cook all our meals in-house. The food industry is notorious for cutting corners where it can, particularly regarding ingredients. By doing our purchasing, inventory, and cooking, we can ensure we are giving our members exactly what they believe they are purchasing.
VIE: Tell us a little about your recipe formulation process. How do you decide what recipes to serve next, and how does your plant-forward, high-protein approach set you apart from other meal delivery services?

JN: The ideal Methodology customer wants optimal nutrition, not just healthy nutrition. This customer wants to optimize their body composition, longevity, and all other health markers. This customer places health as one of their top three priorities in life and feels that money is no object when it comes to optimizing their health. They want only the best of the best when it comes to food, personal training, sleep, and more. Our ideal customer wants to outsource all the thinking and work required with a program that is nutrient-dense, satisfying, high-protein, high-quality, and calorie-controlled. Plus, all our food comes housed in reusable and recyclable packaging, alleviating guilt about packaging waste.
VIE: What are your greatest sources of inspiration? Have any philosophies, brands, or destinations shaped your path or challenged you to innovate?
“The whole experience feels like being at a high-end health retreat or spa where I am completely taken care of.”
JN: I respect the way Patagonia has had to invent solutions in its supply chain to operate more sustainably, and we’ve done the same when it comes to the two years we spent designing our custom fully reusable, recyclable, light, and leakproof bento packaging. I also appreciate how Patagonia built its business slowly and steadily over decades, never compromising its values in the name of revenue growth. We’ve done the same by always prioritizing improving our quality year-over-year over growing revenue year-over-year; for us, if the product is noticeably better this year than last year, even if revenue is flat, that’s a huge win. Our customers sometimes refer to us as “the Patagonia of food delivery,” and I beam with pride when I hear this!
VIE: What has been one of your challenges or setbacks? What did you learn from that experience?
JN: Our biggest challenge was navigating the pandemic. The onset of it felt incredibly scary because no one knew how dangerous COVID would be, and the communication of laws around it was unclear. Our demand quadrupled, but at the same time, no one wanted to come to work on the front lines, which made sense. We had to operate mostly with temp employees who were willing to come in, which was difficult because our service is complex and requires a lot of training to execute successfully. We almost went bankrupt several times. After surviving that, I now know my cofounder and I can survive anything. We came out of it stronger as a team and a business.
VIE: What is your favorite Methodology program or recipe? Do you have any seasonal or holiday favorites that we should keep an eye out for?
VIE: In your eyes, who would be the ideal Methodology customer? What is the most significant resistance or barrier you encounter from people who think they don’t need a reset when they would truly benefit from the program?
JN: I love doing our 4-day Signature Meat + Seafood program where I eat nothing but Methodology for four days from breakfast to lunch to dinner, and it also includes organic ceremonial matcha, a daily high-protein snack, and apple
cider vinegar superfood shrubs to make a delicious probiotic, glucose spike-reducing drink to precede each meal. The whole experience feels like being at a high-end health retreat or spa where I am completely taken care of and know I’m getting optimal calories, protein, fiber, and nutrients every day without having to think, plan, or cook.
During the holiday season, my favorite thing to indulge in is our adaptogenic pumpkin relaxation toast. It tastes better than any pumpkin muffin or pumpkin bread at any bakery because we use only the best ingredients. I dream of this recipe the rest of the year, and it’s one of our top sellers in the fall and winter.
VIE: Where do you see yourself in five years? Do you have any dream collaborations with brands, influencers, or public figures you would love to make happen?
JN: In five years, Methodology will have more nutrition programs and CPG high-protein products and supplements available in grocery stores across America. I also hope to have more lifestyle products, whether it’s baseball caps or beauty products. My dream collaborator would be Hailey Bieber; I love her style!
VIE: If you could eat three superfoods forever, what would they be and why?
JN: Three foods I eat almost every day are: (1) non-fat Greek yogurt because it’s high in protein, low in calories, and probiotic; (2) coffee (decaf and caffeine-free) because it boosts my focus and is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, which are also great for gut health; and (3) raspberries because they’re so high in fiber they help me hit my daily fiber target.
VIE: What is one healthy habit, big or small, you do every day that has transformed your life?
JN: It’s not innovative, unique, or glamorous but I recently started logging all my food into My Fitness Pal in the past year and got down to my lowest body fat percentage ever (even lower than when I was in high school!) as a result. This has transformed every aspect of my health. Everything feels easier now that I’m carrying less weight, and it feels amazing to fit into any clothes I want to wear and have them look flattering on me. My confidence and energy are through the roof as a result. I’ve even completely stopped snoring thanks to this weight loss, which has tremendously impacted my boyfriend’s sleep quality.
VIE: What is one quality you think is undervalued in the world, and why do you think it is important to embody it fully?
JN: Patience. If we focused less on quick fixes and stopped giving up too soon, we’d achieve all our goals in life from financial to health and more. Discipline needs to be paired with patience so we give ourselves enough time to achieve our goals and then sustain our goals over time because we put the proper sustainable habits and systems in place. I got my dream physique in my forties, but it was a nine-month journey, not an eight-week journey. But because I spent so long transforming dozens of little habits rather than doing any crash diets or extremely intense or time-consuming workout programs, I know I’ll be able to sustain this physique for years, if not decades, to come.
Thank you!

The Essence of the Lotus FlowEr
KHAlil RAFAti's InspiRing JouRnEy
he lotus flower is said to represent strength and overcoming adversity. From its fixed position deeply rooted in the mud, it is proof that beauty can exist in even the most unforgiving environments. It makes sense this flower is the emblem of SunLife Organics; it mirrors founder Khalil Rafati’s inspiring journey from drug addict to entrepreneur. Despite a childhood of trauma and abuse and years of homelessness and addiction, Rafati leaned into radical responsibility. By persevering through the muck, he cultivated an honest relationship with God to discover what it looks like to lead a life of love.
“My desire as a child was to be seen. I wanted someone to notice me and love me. I spent most of my time trying to be seen and acknowledged, and the rest was spent in nature,” Rafati begins. “Nature was the only solace I could truly find; I loved the little bunnies in the spring, the minnows in the creek, the butterflies and the birds.”
He continues, “I had debilitating panic attacks and didn’t know what they were. But I was so afraid to tell anybody. Back then, they would put people who went ‘crazy’ in a rubber room in a straitjacket. That was a huge fear of mine: that I would get locked up if I told anyone how I felt. I would just be sitting in class or sometimes doing nothing at all, and I could feel my heart beating out of my chest; thoughts would echo in my brain. I developed severe coping mechanisms like
biting my hand really hard or hiding under blankets. But, I would also go into the woods, especially in rural Ohio after a fresh fallen snow. Being in the forest brought me comfort and shelter from the storm of life.”
Seeking the love and attention he never received during his childhood, Rafati moved to Los Angeles at age twenty-one in pursuit of fame. A short stint in the music industry quickly transformed into a severe drug addiction that left him homeless and misguided. When asked what his ultimate turning point was to know himself—without striving or seeking external validation—he says, “It was in the wreckage of the past, and certainly in sobriety at thirty-three years old, and in a place I was so unfamiliar with: humility.”
He explains, “Humility did not come through virtue. It came through extreme and almost unbearable pain. In my early thirties, after bottoming out and sobering up, I had nothing. I had no family. It was in
that isolation and pain that I found humility, and I reached out to God and asked for help. I got on my knees and asked for help, which is what they taught us in Catholic grade school. I began to feel levity in my spirit. I was doing a lot of menial jobs because I couldn’t get a ‘real job,’ being a convicted felon and high-school dropout. I had nothing at all. I was essentially a beggar, staying at my sponsor’s house. I had to ask for help daily. It’s hard to have an ego when you have nothing. I was praying and meditating at that time, and in that stillness, I could connect with myself through the power and grace of a living and loving God.”
One of Rafati’s jobs during his recovery was a dog walker. On these daily sojourns with two energetic black Labs, he cemented a daily practice he still implements today: a walking gratitude list. “I was recently listening to someone talk about this book that discussed the habits of the greatest revolutionary thinkers of all time. And over 90 percent of them walked daily,” he shares. “Walking is a form of meditation. I still do it today. Most days, or if I’m in
WHEn I AlloWEd MysElF to dREAM AgAin, tHAt’s WHEn the MAgic HAppEnEd.
pain, I just go walk. And as I walk, I say, ‘Thank you, God. Thank you for this clean water, for the roof over my head.’
“I hate to sound religious or spiritual because I don’t consider myself to be either of those things, but I have this incredible relationship with our Creator. I’m a simple, uneducated man who’s just very passionate and excited about life because I was blessed with the gift of bottoming out. I was able to go within and begin the arduous journey of figuring out who I am and what I want to do. If you want to find God, all you have to do is go serve people. Go feed people. Go help people. That’s finding God on steroids.”
Twelve-step meetings were another key part of Rafati’s recovery journey. “Some of my friends were criticizing me and saying I was being brainwashed in those sessions. Then the thought dawned on me: I needed to be brainwashed,” he explains. “My thoughts were filthy. They were self-defeating, self-loathing, and hypercritical of everyone and everything. I realized I needed to put good thoughts in, like we need to drink food and water to survive. Like a good addict, I grabbed onto anything and everything positive and uplifting. If I wasn’t reading As a Man Thinketh, The Power of Kabbalah, or Think and Grow Rich, I would be listening to Power vs. Force and Healing and Recovery by Dr. David Hawkins and watching The Secret. There was a period of probably eighteen months where I didn’t allow myself to think; I was just absorbing this positive information.”
Amid “reprogramming” himself in the early days of recovery, Rafati says, “I stumbled upon the knowledge that I needed to give myself permission to dream again. I had stopped dreaming long ago. I had a lot of help getting that dreamer quality beaten out of me by the school system, society, and myself with the drugs and alcohol. When I allowed myself to dream again, that’s when the magic happened.”
SunLife Organics was the result of Rafati’s big dreams, with a mission to provide the gift of vitality through the highest-quality smoothies and juices. And if you’ve ever been to a SunLife location, you understand the magic. Rafati and the team have sourced the most potent ingredients from around the globe. Each ingredient is intentionally selected for vitality and nourishment, from whey protein sourced from a small farm in New Zealand to ceremonial matcha from the Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan.
The brand’s original location in Malibu, California, still exists today, with several other storefronts spanning the US from Austin, Texas, to Miami, Florida. Over the next year, SunLife plans to open in New York City, Boulder, Brentwood, Del Mar, West Palm Beach, and Nashville. “Landlords are finally getting it. We’re not a smoothie shop; we’re a lifestyle brand,” Rafati tells me. “People don’t just come once. They come multiple times, sometimes multiple times a day.”
One of Rafati’s favorite parts of the business has been developing SunLife products like the Greens Powder, Protein Powders, Hydration & Beauty glow sticks, and Dawn Patrol coffee blend. The Hydration & Beauty glow sticks are a routine
favorite he consumes “every day, all day.” Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and silica leave your skin glowing and hydrated from the inside out. “The Apex greens powder also tastes amazing and lists all the ingredients we use without the misleading ‘proprietary formula,’ marketing nonsense,” he says.
“I had a great idea, but I didn’t create SunLife Organics. The idea existed in the ethers, the fairy-tale space of creativity and God. I just scrubbed the vessel, prayed, and found stillness enough to receive that idea. SunLife Organics was placed into my hands,” he expresses. “I am just the conduit—the connector between the ethereal and the concrete world. That was a heavy realization. The first five years, I pounded my chest, saying ‘Look at me! Look at what I created!’ I didn’t create anything. I just received it.”
Reflecting on his journey, Rafati acknowledges how his relationship with God and the courage to dream again completely shifted his reality. “I’m still an addict; I just changed my focus and changed the ingredients,” he explains. “If you knew the amount of supplements and cold plunging and sauna and crystals and beef tallow skin-care I use on a daily basis—I’m a lunatic,” he says with a laugh. “The goal of an addict is always going to be to do more and get more to feel good. I wish I had known long ago that the greatest joy you’ll ever feel is serving others.”
He continues, “It’s like a cosmic joke. My whole life, I was a desperate, broken little boy seeking female attention and shiny things. But in reality, all I had to do was humble myself, go within, ask God for help, and find a vocation where I could serve. Then, all of a sudden, my dreams were going to come true.”
SunLife Organics is undoubtedly part of Rafati’s greater legacy and a path he helped pave for dreamers. It’s proof that you’re never too late and forgiveness is always available. Creating a kinder world begins with being kind to yourself.

Ayurveda consists of three principles, called doshas, which correlate to the elements. They are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These Sanskrit words may be confusing, especially if you’re hearing them for the first time, so Soffer likes to add a descriptive term to each one. Vata (the wind element) needs calming, Pitta (the fire element) needs cooling, and Kapha (the water and earth elements) needs energizing.
Each of us contains a unique combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, determined by the quantities of these doshas within both parents. You will always be your dosha or your dosha combination, although your doshic balances and imbalances will inevitably shift throughout your life. For example, even if you are Pitta Vata, you can still struggle with excessive Kapha levels that must be brought back into equilibrium.
“Every time someone comes to me and wants to get pregnant, I always suggest Panchakarma so we can cleanse the tissues and the body of any excess Pitta, Kapha, and Vata,” Soffer explains. She says when the mother’s and the father’s bodies are balanced, you’ll conceive a child that has balanced levels of each
element—balance at the beginning of this new life. If the dad or the mom has too much Pitta, now the child will have double Pitta. “I think it’s so important to do Panchakarma before you’re planning on bringing a new human life to earth,” she tells me. Panchakarma is a series of Ayurvedic treatments, often performed four times per year at the change of each season, and typically spans seven days. This is Surya’s most revered treatment series and can be completed in one to twenty-eight days, depending on your financial commitment and goals.
Each of the doshas also correlates to a unique season of life. You’re in the Kapha season from the moment you are born to around twelve or thirteen years old. This period is characterized by catching colds because this is the crucial period when your immune system develops. Then, from puberty to age fifty, we enter the Pitta season. Fire is necessary to procreate, and this excess heat explains why young adults struggle with acne. Vata season is post-menopause; your skin starts to dry out, and you may develop more wrinkles. Understanding which season of life you are in and your unique dosha composition will help you bring greater balance to your body; this is only a fraction of the information Soffer looks at when you participate in a cleanse like Panchakarma.
One of the most extraordinary aspects of working with Soffer was understanding one of the languages of the body she uses to diagnose and treat imbalances:
Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis. This technique involves placing three fingers on your arm to study the characteristics of your pulse. She teaches me that she always reads the right arm for men and the left arm for women. In Ayurveda, there are two holes on either side of the spine that energy is said to flow through; the Ida is on the right side (masculine energy), and the Pingala is on the left (feminine energy).
Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis can help you detect illnesses or imbalances in the body before they happen.
“For example, I can tell from a pulse if someone has a UTI that is just beginning to show,” Soffer tells me.
“It’s like when you start to get a sore throat before you get the cold. But, if you do the right things, like taking a hot shower and getting extra sleep, you can prevent yourself from getting sick.” A quick pulse indicates excess Vata—someone always running from one
task to the next and struggling to prioritize self-care. A dense and slow pulse likely means that a patient has cholesterol issues. Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis is a highly intricate practice that requires years of dedicated study to master. Yet, Soffer assures me that with experience, interpreting each sensation becomes second nature.
Soffer is particularly passionate about helping women understand their bodies’ innate wisdom. From hormonal imbalances to fertility struggles and chronic acne, she has seen it all when it comes to women’s health. A proponent of cycle syncing, she encourages all women to learn about their bodies’ natural rhythms through basal temperature tracking and balancing work and rest according to the phases of their menstrual cycle.
One of her most valuable tips for alleviating painful periods is to avoid carbohydrates, sugar, caffeine, and chocolate after ovulation, which will prevent cramping. If you indulge in a bowl of pasta, mitigate the impact of carbohydrates on your body (glucose spiking) by eating vegetables first. This will make your carbohydrates easier to digest. Moreover, before your period happens, the amount of Pitta in your body continues to rise. This is why your skin breaks out before your period. She also suggests avoiding spicy foods, tomatoes, and eggplants during this period (the luteal phase).
offer understands that modern Ayurveda is not about perfection but balance. Before learning about Ayurveda, she was far from perfect health. “I moved to Los Angeles from Colombia at age twenty-seven to work for IBM in engineering and programming. It was a super stressful job,” she tells me. “I had awful headaches, painful periods, and acid reflux, so I always had a jar of TUMS with me at all times.”
At twenty-seven, Soffer had a serendipitous encounter in the cafeteria of Maharishi International University. She connected with a woman whose hair was still glistening from an Abhyanga treatment—a traditional Ayurvedic four-handed massage—who shared her transformative experience. Intrigued, Soffer explored the Ayurvedic center on campus and experienced Abhyanga along with Shirodhara, a soothing ritual where warm oil is gently poured onto the forehead to calm the nervous system. From that moment, she became deeply devoted to Ayurveda, immersing herself in the study and practice of this profound ancient healing system.
Soffer crafts each product recipe in the Surya collection by hand with meticulous care. When asked which product she would use for the rest of her life, she doesn’t hesitate to answer: the Balancing Face Oil, known affectionately at Surya as “liquid gold.” The story behind this iconic product began in her kitchen, where she first experimented with the formulation. She shared a small jar with a close friend who worked at MAC Cosmetics, who then passed a sample to a colleague at REVLON, after receiving glowing compliments on her radiant skin. Shortly thereafter, the REVLON colleague gently warned her young daughter not to touch the face oil, calling it “liquid gold” as the child played with her makeup. Created fifteen years ago, the Balancing Face Oil remains a best-seller alongside Surya’s Balancing Collagen Cream.
We culminated our interview with a conversation about legacy: Where does she envision her work with Ayurveda going next? “If I die right now, I’ll be happy because I got to expose Ayurveda to people who have never heard of it,” she shares. “So many people are able to walk away with such an incredible experience.”
Having played an essential role in spreading Ayurveda throughout America (and internationally on an increasing level) and working with A-list celebrity clientele, Soffer aims to have even more people experience these transformative treatments firsthand. “It’s so simple to live a healthy, happy life if you apply the principles of Ayurveda,” she concludes.

—Samuel Kimball, Sportova
They say the heart of the home is the kitchen—but with Sportova, it’s undoubtedly the gym. This bespoke fitness design firm, based in Boston, Massachusetts, is redefining luxury fitness and home exercise spaces with unparalleled style and sophistication. After years in the family business (the high-end furniture brand Modern Relik), Samuel Kimball identified a gap in the market for elevated home gyms: “We’re moving away from conventional gym aesthetics, crafting sophisticated environments with natural materials that seamlessly blend into our clients’ curated spaces.”
Sportova created this stunning custom rendering for VIE, inspired by our beautiful office designed by Burwell Associates, Inc. and isidro dunbar Modern Interiors while giving a subtle nod to our signature pink aesthetic. “The design incorporates warm wood paneling, floor-toceiling windows with natural views, and carefully chosen equipment crafted from natural materials in our collection,” Kimball shares. “White leather upholstery adds a touch of refinement while the open layout ensures the space feels inviting and serene. It’s designed to be a functional workout area and a retreat you’ll actually want to spend time in.”

REVIVAL Lakeside Finding FULL-BODY WELL-BEING in Austria
By SARAH FREEMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY of MAYRLIFE
Her hands purposefully circle my stomach clockwise in what has to be the strangest of belly rubs. Known as an abdominal massage, it’s administered by Dr. Roswitha Oppl, one of a fleet of friendly doctors at MAYRLIFE. At this awardwinning medical resort, high-tech healthcare meets haute lodgings.
In a scene that seems straight out of The Sound of Music, the Austrian resort nestles in the time-warped spa town of Altaussee on the serene shores of its mountain-cradled namesake lake. The same curative lake that guests can swim in or e-bike around also fills the glasses at the spa’s waterfront restaurant.
Formerly known as Vivamayr, the newly branded resort continues the legacy of Austrian physician Franz Xaver Mayr—credited with recognizing that the gut is the center of our immune system—with a protocol called the Mayr Cure, designed to purge the body of toxins.
The guest experience begins with a manual muscle test called applied kinesiology, involving some gentle prodding and a sprinkling of powdered foods on your tongue to determine dietary sensitivities and the health of specific organs. The results reveal I am intolerant to cow’s milk, wheat, garlic, and ginger, and I have an intestinal parasite (which is surprisingly common). The findings inform everything from my meals to my medications. The wellness plan is so personalized it prescribes the specific probiotic for my unique microbiome and the best type of cold-pressed plant oil for digestion.
People’s motivations for checking into MAYRLIFE range from stress and sleep deprivation to shifting stubborn pounds. In my case, it’s a lifelong battle with eczema. It turns out that this chronic skin condition needs to be healed from the inside out and, in my case, from my head to my toes!
“People’s motivations for checking into MAYRLIFE range from stress and sleep deprivation to shifting stubborn pounds.”
My first prescribed therapy is craniosacral, designed to calm the nervous system and encourage selfrepair. Therapist Regina applies gentle pressure to my head, neck, and back as I drift dreamily in and out of sleep.
Far from being beige and boring, lunch is a colorful and artfully plated gut-friendly Sunday Roast served in the resort’s light-flooded restaurant. A veal sirloin steak is served with mini rainbow carrots, steamed potatoes, and a healthy foam in lieu of gravy. A mainstay of the Cure is resetting your digestive system by alkalizing your diet. This means no alcohol, sugar (including fruit), caffeine, animal fats, or hard-to-digest raw food.
Back on the resort’s dedicated medical floor, I check in for some nasal reflex therapy, which involves having an aromatherapy-oil-soaked Q-tip inserted into each nostril to stimulate different organs. It’s one of
a long list of treatments, including brain-boosting bio-frequency, inflammation-reducing cryotherapy, and holistic hydrotherapies. Said to calm angry skin, my detox wrap involves being slathered in gloopy white goat butter before being wrapped like an Egyptian mummy and left to float in warm water for twenty tranquil minutes.
Back in my robe, I shuffle along to the in-house lab for a swift and painless pinprick blood test measuring mineral analysis and cell-damaging free radicals. The diagnostics continue with an e-scan, which creates an avatar of your musculoskeletal system, building a picture of your metabolic health in the process.
Dr. Oppl discusses my results later that afternoon, advising small versus drastic lifestyle changes (phew!). Nevertheless, I’m sent off with a mindboggling array of tinctures, powders, and capsules to support my body through the detox and beyond.
Dinner—the lightest and smallest meal of the day— usually amounts to a simple vegetable broth yet is surprisingly filling thanks to “mindful chewing.” This key tenet of the Cure encourages you to chew each morsel fifty times (yes, fifty!) to activate those all-important digestive enzymes.
Afterward, guests typically congregate in the bar— the tea bar, that is—where they can help themselves to freshly bagged herbal brews. Far from being cold and clinical, the communal area is decorated in an uplifting palette of pistachio green and lilac, with a freestanding tiled stove to huddle around for maximum hygge!
In the spirit of the Cure’s early-to-bed, early-to-rise philosophy, I retreat to my deluxe lake-view room at around 8:00 p.m. A restful refuge and vision of elegant Scandi-esque minimalism, its bathroom— complete with a smart toilet—is bigger than most London studio flats! I gulp down another cloudy glass of stomach-acid-reducing base powder while curled up on my velvet corner sofa before nodding off with a “liver-wrap” hot water bottle to support the detox.
The following morning, I wake to magical mist dancing over the lake, which lures me to my balcony despite the bone-chilling −5°C temperature. I join
other guests in padding down to breakfast in fluffy bathrobes and slippers and starting the day with an espresso of dandelion root. Naturally rich in electrolytes, it tastes uncannily like coffee despite being caffeine-free. After grazing unhurriedly (doctor’s orders!) on a spread of avocado mousse, cured trout, and a buckwheat bread roll, I go upstairs for my next treatment.
Floating waist-high in warm water, my weightless body is gently stretched and cradled in the healing hands of Karl-Heinz Köpf. The stress-reducing and sleepimproving watsu—also known as water shiatsu—is part dance, part massage, and said to mimic being in your mother’s womb.
Over the coming days, I intersperse my therapies and daily doctor appointments with dopamine-filled walks because nature is also a cure. On one peerless blue-sky day, I embark on the well-trodden 4.5-mile circuit of Lake Altaussee, whose glassy waters perfectly mirror Loser Mountain. Like a blonde (wooden) bombshell, MAYRLIFE and its modernist chalet architecture dazzle at the foot of it. Several guided group hikes are scheduled, too, like Nordic walking and forest bathing, aka the famous Japanese therapy that feels strangely at home in the fir forests of central Austria.
You can also drink in life-affirming lakeside views from the resort’s floor-to-ceiling windowed saline pool, found in its sprawling state-of-the-art spa. Facilities range from a steam room to various types of sauna, including an infrared booth reminiscent of a cozy cabin where I pass the time turning the pages of my dogeared book.
Later, I swap reading for restorative Qigong, an ancient Chinese mind-body-spirit practice that marries movement with controlled breathing. Erich Haretzmüller patiently walks and talks our group of four through a series of standing and sitting postures designed to foster inner alignment and connection. “The pelvis is your kingdom. It’s life!” he says as we prop ourselves on meditation cushions. The resort also hosts group stretching and yoga classes, including nidra and aerial.
“I felt energized. I left these healing shores feeling as clear-minded as Altaussee’s luminous lake.”
I continue my meditation outside, inhaling the fresh alpine air from the resort’s private jetty as the setting sun paints Lake Altaussee gold. It’s the perfect moment to reflect on what’s been as much a digital and mental detox as a physical one. While I did experience the dreaded day three downer—usually due to caffeine and sugar withdrawal—for the most part, I felt energized. I left these healing shores feeling as clear-minded as Altaussee’s luminous lake.

BY HAILEY BETHKE | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE RANCH HUDSON VALLEY
deally situated less than an hour’s drive from the bustle of New York City, a dreamy winter wonderland awaits. The Ranch’s newest property sits on two hundred acres of lush forest in Lower Hudson Valley, set on a historic, private lakefront estate.
The brand’s award-winning Malibu location quickly garnered press for its results-oriented and highly structured wellness programs, attended by A-list celebrities and C-Suite executives. The opening of The Ranch Hudson Valley in April 2024 marks its first East Coast location. While you will surely recognize elements of The Ranch experience you would receive in Malibu, there are many delightful new additions, including its newly unveiled Winter Wellness Programming.
The Ranch Hudson Valley offers a variety of programming lengths designed to accommodate at most twenty-five guests for maximized personal attention and connection. After selecting a date frame between three nights and five days, one will partake in mountain hikes, strength training classes, restorative yoga, deep tissue massages, and organic plant-based meals. Your schedule will be fully customized to your unique needs and abilities, with program cornerstones designed to improve
mental and physical health, foster human connection, and create meaningful and positive change.
In each program, the day begins with a morning stretch and breakfast. Then, embark on your choice of a two-hour or four-hour group hike. The Ranch coordinates breathtaking excursions to nearby Ringwood State Park or Harriman State Park, which collectively host hundreds of miles of trails. As your focus shifts to the path in front of you, your feet will guide you along streams, lakes, waterfalls, and peaks before ending with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains and the Hudson River.
Once guests return from their treks, they’ll enjoy a plant-based lunch and naptime before afternoon programming. This timeframe typically calls for a second dose of daily movement through strength
training classes or restorative yoga in the two-thousand-square-foot gym. Formerly the estate’s ballroom, the Ranch’s gym showcases timeless elements like classic wood paneling, a grand fireplace, and an intricate sculptured plaster ceiling. Guests also receive daily massages during this time to further aid recovery while promoting nervous system relaxation.
As with all meals at The Ranch, dinner is prepared by a team of award-winning chefs who source the highest-quality seasonal and organic ingredients from nearby farms. Each dish is mindfully crafted to be nutritionally balanced while assisting the body in cleansing and detoxification. To further enhance the group experience, meals are enjoyed at the communal table in the estate’s former sunroom; staff members also use this time to teach transformative tools to ensure lasting health and sustainable habits well after the guests’ Ranch experiences.
The Winter Wellness Program offers a tranquil environment for guests willing to brave the snow for solace. The trails are often empty in the cooler months, allowing you to drop in and experience a deep appreciation for nature. Guided snowshoeing adventures are another recent programming addition. The Ranch is prepared for these invigorating temperatures, providing guests with specialized winter gear to ensure safe and enjoyable outdoor excursions.
Seasonal indoor activities like Signature Ranch Water Polo in the property’s five-thousand-squarefoot solarium offer a fresh take on fitness. Sledding on the back lawn is always available after snowfall and will leave you in high spirits. Winter-exclusive spin classes may be available during inclement weather, while the infrared sauna is always available to assist in detoxification and restoration. You can also cozy up during fireside fitness sessions in the Ranch Gym while taking yoga, Pilates, meditation, or strength training classes.
Know that you will always be learning habits to supercharge your health, and the recently added Breathe & Plunge class is a prime example. By alternating between energizing hot and cold plunges and a series of breathwork, you will calm the nervous system while enhancing your mindset and lung capacity. Energy healing, hypnotherapy, and Reiki sessions are also available to clear blockages and connect with one’s intuitive self.
The Winter Wellness Program invites guests to reconnect with nature and oneself. Whether seeking a physical reset, a detox from a festive holiday season, meaningful group interactions, a jumpstart to healthy habits, or a moment of solitude, The Ranch Hudson Valley offers a unique environment for growth and renewal. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ARLO HOTELS
THE VASTNESS OF THE COSMOS
ARTIST CHRIS RIVERS
DEBUTS
NEW COLLECTION IN MIAMI
Arlo Hotels, an independent, experience-driven lifestyle hotel brand, is proud to partner with London’s Pontone Gallery and artist Chris Rivers, who headlined the brand’s Living Room Gallery program at Arlo Wynwood during Miami Art Week in December 2024. The 217-room hotel, located in the heart of Miami Art Week’s creative programming, showcased a special installation at its third-floor gallery, serving as an open exhibition for the public. Curated by Jasmine Arakel, the exhibition, entitled Cosmos, features exuberant works in which the artist utilizes the materiality of paint to create images of otherworldly expanses and environments.
“I’m thrilled to showcase my new exhibition at Arlo Wynwood,” says Rivers, whose work is on view through February in the hotel’s gallery spaces. “Cosmos is about the things you don’t notice at first and serves as a contrast between innocence and something darker.”
Arlo Wynwood’s third-floor gallery showcases Rivers’s dedication to exploring the beauty and vastness of the cosmic system, the complexities and contradictions of the human condition, and the infinite possibilities of the universe. Rivers often introduces soft light filters through layers of complementary tones, swelling with dramatic, saturated color before receding into the image. Upon closer inspection, the clouds are populated by minute details—flowers, insects, figures, and other characters—scattered across the painted surface, offering a sense of scale to the abstract haze. Distinct rococo elements are also detectable, as curvilinear motifs fade in and out of the vibrant, bustling compositions.
Arakel, who has had an extensive career as a creative producer, collaborated with the Arlo Hotels team to create this edition of the Living Room Gallery for Miami Art Week. The program, which the brand launched with Arakel in Spring 2023, allows guests and the public to experience and appreciate collectorgrade art in a welcoming and accessible environment.
COSMOS IS ABOUT THE THINGS YOU DON’T NOTICE AT FIRST AND SERVES AS A CONTRAST BETWEEN INNOCENCE AND SOMETHING DARKER.
“Ultimately, I would like visual arts to have a place in people’s lives the same way fashion or music does,” explains Arakel. “Through prolonged exposure and accessibility, I believe it can be achieved, and we’re already beginning to see a cultural shift toward it.”
Since its opening in 2022, Arlo Wynwood has served as a cultural hub for art enthusiasts. The property has over 250 pieces of art, reflecting its community. For example, on the serene yoga deck, Florida-based collage artist Ari Robinson created a plexiglass mural featuring overlapping organic shapes of varying sizes and hues that produce unique color combinations, shadows, and reflections for a feeling of levity and calm.
The property’s exterior walls feature works by Miami-based artist Hoxxoh, known for his “spheres of life” that illustrate the motions of space and time, and MILAGROS Collective, whose cofounders Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre created site-specific work that explores the history of the community through striking arrangements of color and lines. The hand-painted Aztec symbols embodying the outdoor planters throughout the hotel’s Higher Ground lounge are by Miami native Johnnie Manfrediz. Other artists featured throughout the hotel include Alain Castoriano, Coruna Luna, Jessica Poundstone, Joe Geis, Lauren Williams, Matthias Lupri, Ryan Coleman, and Tom Abbiss. When the hotel opened, it also partnered with pioneering “phygital” (physical + digital) artist Brooke Einbender to design each of the hotel’s elevators with 3D decals that reflect the intersection of where art and technology meet.
Chris Rivers’s exhibition will be on view at Arlo Wynwood through February 28, 2025. To see more from Rivers, follow him @chrisriversart. Arlo Wynwood is at 2217 NW Miami Court. LIVING TEXTILES A NEW NARRATIVE IN FASHION
Ying Gao is revolutionizing the fashion landscape with her unique approach to interactive fashion design. Based in Montreal, Canada, she brings her creative concepts to life—almost literally—through garments that embody movement and emotion. Her creations are more than just clothing; they are animated pieces of art that reflect the fluidity of water and the dynamism of nature, sparking conversation.
Gao’s captivating work has gained recognition worldwide and has been showcased in various exhibitions. She encourages individuals to embrace creativity and think beyond traditional fashion. Her designs illustrate that clothing can go beyond functionality, inspiring the imagination.
BY MCKENNA MEARS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAUDE ARSENAULT
2 5 2 6
One of her standout collections, 2 5 2 6, exemplifies this philosophy. In this collection, Gao draws inspiration from non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse, resulting in garments that twist, breathe, and bloom—simulating the essence of virtual clothing. The name 2 5 2 6 signifies the hours she meticulously dedicated to crafting these pieces, from initial sketches to final stitches.
While these garments can be worn, they are more conceptual than practical, inviting viewers to engage with fashion on a deeper level. Gao challenges the idea that all fashion needs to be utilitarian; instead, her work encourages thought and creativity. This collection highlights the growing connection between technology and humanity, blurring the lines between digital and physical realms.
In creating these two polymorphic garments, Gao has also developed a new soft material that combines glass, precious metals, and silicone, pushing the boundaries of textile innovation. As a designer, she explores the notion of intangible garments and the virtual body, considering the implications of fashion in a digital age. Gao’s interactive fashion design in the 2 5 2 6 collection redefines our perception of clothing and opens up new possibilities at the intersection of art, technology, and personal expression.
PURPLE SKIN
In a world where fabric often tells a familiar story, Ying Gao’s Purple Skin invites us into a narrative of transformation. These garments go beyond conventional roles, becoming dynamic objects of fictional design where Gao’s artistry truly shines. Crafted from an artificial “skin,” Purple Skin is not just a piece of clothing but a living entity that evolves with its wearer. Through complex construction methods, Gao has infused materials like silicone, glass, and 20-micron poly with life, creating a texture that bends and reshapes. Each configuration evokes the delicate folds and fragility of human skin.
“This imitated skin can take on different configurations and fall under various material frameworks,” shares Gao. “Through this fluidity, the skin re-appropriates a given material’s properties, becoming it, but also taking on new meanings.”
PAPER WORK
Another notable collection by Gao features materials such as recycled dry-cleaning bags, kraft paper, and recycled pattern paper, emphasizing her commitment to sustainability.
Packaging can serve as a protective layer, keeping dust at bay and preventing damage while bringing together various elements. Gao explains, “Paper Work garments position the idea of a protective covering as a virtue that draws on an ambivalence: Is it a hindrance? Is it an eventuality trapped in the heart of a concept, rendered obsolete? In the contradiction lies completeness.”
The Paper Work series—crafted from years of collected pattern papers and dry-cleaning poly bags—showcases a thoughtful approach to upcycling, transforming discarded materials into meaningful designs.
Through her collections and interactive fashion projects, Gao encourages us to see garments as living, breathing (sometimes literally!) entities—art that connects with our experiences and emotions. In her world, clothing becomes a platform for exploration and thought. As we navigate this everevolving landscape, she reminds us that fashion is as much about storytelling and self-expression as it is about practicality.

Gucci ushered in the festive season at Sweet Bird North Plaza in Miami’s Design District with an immersive installation, capturing the joyful essence of the holidays while drawing inspiration from the House’s rich travel-inspired heritage. Inspired by enchanted snow globes, the installation is on display until January 7. Tastemakers, artists, and leaders from the fashion, art, and entertainment industries gathered on December 3 to celebrate. Guests included Gucci deputy CEO Stefano Cantino, supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio, and many more. Following cocktail hour, Gucci hosted an intimate dinner at Mother Wolf.
