JOHN BAGSHAW’S INDUSTRY VIEW In this issue, John Bagshaw, Ideal Bathroom’s Managing Director shares his advice for the months ahead.

In the last edition of The Ideal Bathroom you shared your thoughts on Brexit. Now the decision has been made, how has the vote to leave impacted the industry?

I don’t think it’s made a massive impact in any area. The key word at the moment is uncertainty, with the inference that uncertainty leads to caution. After the initial shock, I see a queue of nations wanting to trade with the UK, despite the propaganda from European nations saying they’ll make it difficult. I spoke to a number of market analysts and investors and none of them can really account for the reaction to our currency. The key knock-on effect of that for our industry, obviously, is that goods arriving now from outside the UK are substantially more expensive. The big challenge, as we move into 2017, will be how easy it will be to accept those price increases and pass them onto the marketplace.

4

Cooper Callas announced it was entering administration in June. What are your thoughts on what went wrong, and what this means for the industry?

What advice does Ideal have for customers wanting to maximise their smart technology offering?

Ignore technology at your peril! Digital Clearly Coopers were not in a great position. showrooms will definitely be a differentiator going forward. Technology will give Once the deal had been done for that bathroom studios a distinct advantage business to be released by the family, I’m and provide opportunities for added value not sure the tactics employed by the new sales and bigger ticket items. Providing owners were appropriate. If you are to keep complete solutions with IT at the heart of brand value in the supply chain, it’s done through aligned strategies and close working the offering will be truly beneficial. I think the smart showrooms are already investing relationships. Over-distribution always in technology and integrating it into their leads to commoditisation and poor financial offering. performance for everyone. You end up with a race to the bottom. Choosing and selecting distribution partners carefully to create brand value is a must.

How has Ideal adapted to the closure of Coopers? Our activity has risen considerably so we’ve had to adapt and invest. However, there’s only so much you can deliver from existing infrastructure so we will be investing in an additional warehouse in Milton Keynes in order to facilitate our growth. This new warehouse offers twice as much space as our current building, so it’s a big investment but more importantly a great chance to grow the business while still offering the excellent service Ideal is built upon.

AMEN’S PERFECT BATHROOM

We asked Amendeep Bains, Essential Bathrooms’ new Product Manager to pick her favourite products to create her Ideal bathroom. Ever since I started at Essential in June, every day has brought something new – and this is no exception! I’m thrilled to be working for a brand that started out with just towel warmers and has grown to offer over 200 products. We work tirelessly to make sure we’re offering the right products and supporting our customers in the best way we can. Not only do we provide quality, style and choice, all of our products are available for next day delivery to 99% of the UK. In my current role, I enjoy being able to build relationships with our suppliers, making sure we have the right products, service and support for our customers. It’s also really great to be working for a brand with such a strong presence, and helping it grow even more! It’s taken me some time to get my perfect bathroom just right, but I’m very happy with the end result. So without further ado, here it is. Brassware Crest

Furniture

Nevada Cashmere

(60cm basin unit with 2 doors & 50cm back-to-wall unit) More and more people are choosing bathroom furniture that reflects their personalities. I love a bathroom to have a warm and cosy feel – and the Cashmere colour is perfect. It’s also exclusive to our Nevada range. The range gives me plenty of space to store all my toiletries, and it comes fully assembled, which is perfect if, like me, you’re not great at DIY! It has a ceramic basin included and we offer a huge 10-year guarantee on all of our furniture.

(basin & bath shower mixer) Don’t underestimate the importance of brassware – the finishing touches make all the difference and can really change the dynamic of a bathroom! I love the Crest brassware because its curved lines give any space a clean, modern feel. Slimline is a trend at the moment and Crest ticks that box. Click waste is also included. Of course you need matching brassware for your basin and bath, and the Crest range also includes an excellent bath shower mixer.

Urban accessories The little details are as important as the big ones, so don’t neglect the accessories. I hate my toothbrush and toothpaste lying around so I’m a big fan of accessories that help declutter my bathroom – tumbler holder, fixed toilet roll holder, towel ring and shelf are all a must. I also like things to complement each other, so getting accessories that match is very important.

Showerbath

Sanitaryware Ivy

(back-to-wall pan) The Ivy range is our latest sanitaryware range and provides everything you need – it’s practical yet elegant. Its rimless technology means it’s really hygienic and simple to clean, Ivy has our largest range of options and sizes and it’s really great value for money, of course. If, like me, you like to save water, the 6/3 litre push button flush also helps you do your bit for the environment.

Kensington Shower Bath

This really is the best of both worlds – a shower for when you’re in a rush and a bath for when you need some R&R. Classy and elegant, it’s the perfect addition to any bathroom with its sleek lines and curves. The built-in leg set and towel rail is very convenient and the 5-year guarantee seals the deal for me. To complement the furniture and complete the look I’d also combine this with a Cashmere L Shape Bath Panel from the Nevada furniture range.

Designer towel warmers Aries Chrome

A chrome towel warmer is the perfect way to complement the Crest brassware and really rounds off my perfect bathroom. In my opinion there’s nothing better than wrapping up in a warm towel on a winter night after a shower or bath? This Italian design comes in a range of sizes and boasts a 5-year guarantee.

THE RISE OF THE SMART HOME The home of tomorrow has arrived and is here to stay. Retailers looking to stay ahead of the competition are embracing all things smart and meeting the future head on.

18

In an ever-increasingly digital world, technology is changing many aspects of our lives. Our homes are no exception, with smart homes already being billed as the next big thing to be digitised. Savvy consumers are looking to add the latest technological innovations to their homes. And retailers in the know are looking to maximise their smart offering to meet demand. What exactly is a smart home? There’s a lot of confusion amongst consumers about what the term ‘smart home’ actually means. While some believe it relates to multimedia devices, others think of wearable devices or phone apps. And yet more think the term alludes to digital temperature control. All these views can be considered correct, because the smart home concept can cover all these categories.

THE IDEAL BATHROOM | The latest marketplace news

Broadly speaking, a smart home is a house equipped with multiple advanced automated systems to give people sophisticated control over their home’s function. This means that by using intelligent products a smart home can control features and appliances. The benefits of a smart home Smart homes are designed to make everyday life easier, freeing up people from chores and daily tasks. In a modern world where every spare second is precious, smart homes appeal to consumers because they can save time and money, while giving a heightened sense of control and security. With that in mind, intelligent retailers will capitalise on the benefit that smart products can offer a consumer, especially when one report states that 50% of consumers believe that smart home technology will impact their lives over the coming few years. From smart homes to smart bathrooms The bathroom is quickly becoming the hub of the smart home, filled with gadgets and technology to improve every aspect of the experience, as well as consumer wellbeing. Yet criticising today’s bathroom offering and labelling it ‘unsmart’ would be unfair, especially when you look how far it’s come. We replaced tin baths with whirlpool baths, and let’s not forget the single-handed tap that controls both hot and cold water wasn’t invented until 1939! Despite the relative modernity of today’s bathroom, the arrival of new technologies will always continue to shape its aesthetics and functionality. And it would seem that we

are presently welcoming the dawn of the smart bathroom era. More than ever before, technology is becoming a fundamental feature in bathrooms across the globe.

The products driving the smart revolution Smart products for the bathroom come in many different shapes and sizes and, while all have different functions, their main purpose is to make the consumer’s life a little easier. From showers with touch control and digital taps, to integrated heaters and mirrors with built-in Bluetooth, there’s a wealth of choice for consumers looking to invite technology into their bathrooms. Mira Showers are one company who have invested heavily in smart technology and are offering intelligent products to consumers. Mira Platinum and Vision digital showers are a great example. Both products use wireless technology to allow consumers to turn their showers on from the comfort of their beds, letting them enjoy a few more moments’ rest while the shower warms up. And that’s not all. Their settings can be changed from the wireless controller, giving consumers total control of their showering experience. And the products themselves aren’t alone in their increasing intelligence. Installation and fitting processes are also becoming increasingly streamlined and straightforward.

Mira’s simple installation is as smart as their products and means that both showers can be installed in as little as an hour. Another brand who are utilising smart technology in their products are Salamander Pumps. HomeBoost is an innovative product that is transforming homes with its unique solution to low mains water pressure. The pump, which is WRAS approved, recognises when water flow is low and boosts it up to a maximum of 12 litres per minute, while also ensuring it never goes above regulatory levels and only works when it’s needed. Operating at just 46dB, HomeBoost is quieter than an electrical kettle and has been awarded the Quiet Mark – a title given to products that are independently judged to be amongst the quietest in their class. The HomeBoost also uses solid state switching (S3) technology to increase the reliability and lifespan of this intelligent, responsive product. The barriers stopping consumers buying smart products With all this smart technology available, and much more going into production every day, it may come as a surprise to learn that not all consumers are embracing the smart revolution. As with most new trends and technology, mass adoption takes time. Let’s look at why that is, and the steps you can take to tackle those ingrained behaviours. Education as a priority One recent survey suggested that while 91% of people were aware of the term smart home, only 68% claimed to have some knowledge of the subject. Another report showed that only 16% of consumers globally attested to knowing a lot about smart homes. This means that retailers must take on the responsibility of educating consumers about the multiple benefits that smart bathroom products can offer. Education has to be your number one priority. It’s vitally important for business that your staff are knowledgeable about the smart products you stock and can relay the benefits. Retailers who can relate the genuine benefits of a smart product to a consumer, rather than selling technology for technology’s sake, will see the rewards because consumers who realise the genuine benefits will be more willing to increase their spend. Price is also another contributing factor that may deter some customers. New technology is traditionally more expensive until demand increases. Once smart products become more commonplace, prices will be more Mira Platinum Dual Digital Shower with Thermostatic technology

competitive. One way for retailers to overcome this barrier is to sell the idea of a smart bathroom piece by piece. Rather than suggesting a whole suite of smart products, find which particular technologies the consumer is interested in and focus on that area. Finding your audience Beyond education, there are other ways to make the most of your smart technology offering. Profiling age and income can help identify when to go the extra mile. Recent research shows that the concept of a smart home appeals most to Millennials (people aged between 16 – 34) and Generation X (a slightly older group aged between 35 – 54). After that, the appeal of smart technology declines steadily as the consumer gets older.

Further studies also highlighted that high income households were the most interested in smart technology, with 52% of the group stating it was extremely or very appealing compared to 43% of medium income households and just 29% of low income households. As a retailer, it’s worth evaluating if your customers are the right demographic for smart products.

results are rather drastic. In a 2015 study of German retailers, agile retailers (retailers quick to push new products) are more effective at establishing a higher sales value and volume. The study concluded that agile retailers boasted a growth rate of more than 20% which, when compared to the 5.2% of the overall market, is a very impressive statistic.

Another key audience to consider is leading edge consumers. These early adopters are people who enjoy being at the forefront of the digital revolution and are passionate about the category. These are the pioneering consumers who were the first to invest in the iPhone, Blu-ray and 3D television. It’s important to consider this group when selling smart bathrooms because they are influencers. It’s a safe bet that products which leading edge consumers purchase today will find their way into tomorrow’s mass market. Recognising leading edge consumers and getting them excited about smart bathroom products is paramount to bolstering your reputation as a leading smart technology provider.

Here at Ideal Bathrooms we understand the growth potential of smart technology and the opportunities this can open up for our retail customers. Embracing these technologies can help retailers position themselves as forward-thinking, proactive companies, and show consumers that they have their ‘finger on the pulse’ of the changing bathroom industry. We are constantly working with our brand partners to provide the latest technological developments and, as with the technology itself, make our customers’ lives easier by providing these products on next day delivery to 99% of the UK.

NEW TO CONCEPT FREEDOM Introducing an accessible bath for all ages Extending its hugely successful accessible bathroom offering, Ideal Standard has added a new bath to its Concept Freedom range. The new bath has been designed to give older and less-abled bathroom users peace of mind without sacrificing its design aesthetic. It combines functionality with luxury and what’s more, many of the features, such as the lower height and ledge, will also make bath time simpler for families and those bathing children.

Concept Freedom range

Concept Freedom’s new bath has an extrawide reinforced ledge, giving users stability to control and swing their legs over the edge and lower themselves into the bath. It also doubles as a seat for loved ones, should assistance be required, and its shape means that bathers can pull themselves forward to reach brassware easily. With its lower height of 460mm getting in and out of the bath is a more controlled experience.

To create the product with the needs of older people in mind, Ideal Standard teamed up with experts in design and care. Design Council member Colum Lowe from dementia charity Red and Yellow Care, and occupational therapist Anava Baruch from Design for Independence lent their expertise to the product team headed up by Ideal Standard’s designer, Robin Levien.

The entire Concept Freedom range of products by Ideal Standard aims to appeal to those of limited mobility through welldesigned and elegant functions to meet a range of access needs.

Manoeuvring in the bath can be tricky for older people, which is why this product features a handy step inside the bath itself, letting users push themselves into a seated position when in the bath and push themselves towards the support rail when getting out. As well as the support rails, a gel headrest is available for neck support.

Talking about the Concept Freedom range, Robin Levien said, “Our work with industry experts showed many older people worry about bathing. Common fears include anxiety that they won’t be able to get out, a fear of sliding under water and a worry that they’ll slip when manoeuvring in the bath. Each design feature of the bath has been created with these anxieties in mind, meaning older people can use the bath knowing they’ll have a safe, stress-free experience. “Functionality is at the heart of the Concept Freedom range. This versatile bath is designed to nourish independence and freedom of movement, without compromising on beautiful design.”

Until recently, many access bathrooms were designed for their functionality rather than their looks. The Concept Freedom range is challenging that view, creating bathrooms that look modern and stylish while being adaptable to users’ changing needs. As well as baths, the range includes raised height WCs for more comfortable use. Accessible basins with wide side rims, and easy to use shower valves and kits make washing easier. Wetroom panels with extended brackets complete the range. Most products in the range conform to Part M, meaning it’s easy to meet building regulation compliance.

Showroom support A dedicated Concept Freedom brochure will be available, as will a selection of illustrative POS materials to support showroom displays. For more information visit www.idealstandard.co.uk

GROHE SMARTCONTROL: PUSH BUTTON CONTROL FOR A PRECISE AND LUXURIOUS SHOWER

GROHE is delighted to present a brand new, unique GROHE Rainshower® system featuring innovative SmartControl push button technology: the first of its kind on the market to offer on-off and volume control at the push of a button. Simply select and start the spray pattern by pushing a button on the sleek wall-mounted control. Turning the button allows the user to then choose the strength and volume of the water flow - putting a perfect shower experience for all the family at your fingertips.

Comfortable ‘push and turn’ operation

A new dimension of comfortable showering

GROHE SmartControl takes the idea of comfortable showering to a new level. The newly designed push button integrates both the ONOFF function and the water volume control. Start the shower by simply pushing the button with the intuitive symbol for the head shower spray pattern or the hand spray. The anti-slip edges of the push buttons allows the user to adjust the water flow volume accurately even with wet hands.

GROHE SmartControl is available as part of a GROHE Rainshower® system comprising an innovative head and hand shower set. Measuring an impressive 360 x 220 millimetres, the lozenge shaped head uses a high quality metal shower base to produce a wide-bodied and uniquely soft GROHE Rain O2 or Rain spray. The choice between the two patterns is made at the time of installation depending on user preference.

Thermostat supports comfortable temperature presetting

The head shower also offers a relaxing TrioMassage spray, combining two powerful massage jets with the dynamically ‘breathing’ GROHE Bokoma Spray™. As the push buttons are positioned on the body of the shower system, it is easy to choose your preferred head shower spray, or to switch to the GROHE Power&Soul® hand shower. The hand shower adds more variety to the shower experience by offering a choice between the GROHE Rain O2 or Rain spray.

The metal thermostat handle allows the water temperature to be preset quickly and simply. It features a SafeStop button which limits the temperature to a maximum of 38 degree Celsius, unless overridden. The GROHE TurboStat® technology ensures the chosen temperature is reached within fractions of a second and maintained reliably until the user chooses to change it. GROHE CoolTouch® technology prevents the surface of the shower from heating up, thereby removing the risk of scalding. The smoothly rounded and modern shape of the shower system looks stylish in any shower. There is also a safety glass tray to hold shampoo, shower gel and other body care products.

24

Concealed installation as an optional solution As an alternative to the exposed installation, the head shower can also be mounted directly on the wall and combined with a hand spray set. This solution can be realised using discreet water fittings such as the Rapido T thermostatic concealed valve & Grohtherm 3000 Cosmopolitan finishing set with diverter.

THE IDEALISTS Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Celebrating their everyday achievements is a crucial part of life at Ideal. In this section we talk to people across the business to see how they make a difference.

Kathy Tompkins

Rob Horsford

Rachel Goode

Kathy works as a Contracts Estimator and has been part of the Ideal team for 16 years.

Rob is one of our drivers and is always happy to lend a hand elsewhere in the company. He has worked for Ideal for over 11 years.

Rachel has been with Ideal for the past 14 years so she knows a lot about the company and how things work around here.

What does your job involve?

What does your job involve?

Currently I’m employed as a driver but I’ve not done much driving in the last six or seven months! I’m doing lots of different things – supporting transport and warehouse, just covering everything at the moment!

I’m first point of call for urgent emails and calls if there’s been any problems, if they require any technical information, or anything like that. I process a lot of orders, it’s an extension of field sales.

What’s the best thing about your job?

What’s the best thing about your job?

That’s a difficult question, there’s a lot I like about my job. I like the variety of it, the different challenges it brings, and helping others. I like the whole job really.

It’s a nice sociable office, which makes my job really enjoyable. It’s nice to speak to people from different parts of the country. Having had children, I work part-time, so I feel like I have the best of both worlds.

What does your job involve? My role is within the Contracts Department where we receive project details and produce quotations. I oversee the process from that point onwards – tracking the orders and making sure everything goes smoothly. We don’t chase business, we only deal with our customers’ requests.

What’s the best thing about your job? The customer contact. We have a certain amount of frequent customers so we build up a rapport with them and have an idea of what they want and need. They have a consistent contact that they can talk to. I do enjoy that side particularly. When we get a new customer we work to build that same relationship with them.

What would surprise us most about you? I don’t think I could surprise anyone! My three grandchildren keep my time occupied. I don’t want to miss out on anything.

What does good customer service mean to you? For me, it’s making sure that I put the customer first. It’s making sure that they have everything they asked for on time. And also doing our best to resolve the situation if something has gone wrong.

What would surprise us most about you? To be honest I have no hidden secrets. I’m just a plain family man. I’m into football but everyone knows that. I was racking my brain last night thinking about this, but there’s nothing hidden at all.

What does good customer service mean to you? Helping the customer out, being polite and honest. Just doing the best that I can for them. When you’re driving a similar route you get to know the customers by name and I try to sort any problems out myself because I have the knowledge to do that. I’ve got some customers going to Center Parcs soon and they’ve invited me along to join them for a day or two. Without the customers there’s no job.

0800 634 2600 | atyourservice@idealbathrooms.com | www.idealbathrooms.com

What would surprise us most about you? I was thinking about this last night at home. I’m a natural brunette! I’ve been blonde for quite a long time now, so that might surprise a few people.

Describe yourself in 3 words. Happy, sociable and loyal.

What does ideal customer service mean to you? When a customer goes away satisfied and recommends Ideal to other people. I am quite a happy person, I really don’t mind being at work and I think that comes across. Working part time means I really enjoy my job!

ON THE FAST TRACK

RUNNING HOT

Ideal Bathroom’s Operations Director Kim Kirby-Earnshaw talks about Ideal’s new fleet and recent investments.

New warehouse

As Operations Director at Ideal, what’s the biggest challenge you currently face? The continued sales growth which we are achieving at the moment means recruitment is becoming our biggest challenge. I have to say that drivers seem to be the area that we find most difficult to recruit for. We’re increasing the number of relief drivers we employ. The role of a driver has changed over the last 25 years, so now it’s more skills-based. They’re very customer facing, more than any other employee, so customer service is at the top of that list. They also need to have moved with technology as we move towards being paperless. We’re very fortunate, we have exceptional drivers at the moment.

Tell us about the new fleet of vehicles and the improvements they bring. Over the last seven years or so we’ve been improving on the fleet. We try to make sure we’re more environmentally friendly each time we swap the fleet out. Once a vehicle gets to three years old we look to swap it, so we’ve just replaced 20 and have started on the next phase. We’ve changed the livery to match our new brand guidelines, so they have a livelier design. For me, those vans are a working environment for people, so it’s important they’re the best they can be.

What other recent investments have been made to make sure service remains at the heart of Ideal’s offering? We’ve currently just agreed a partner for route optimisation and electronic POD solutions. Therefore, we’re now working on the specification for implementation for Q1 2017. It means we’ll be able to give customers a more accurate ETA, and allows us to be more proactive generally.

We’re proud to announce that we’re increasing our infrastructure to bolster our offering, which means we’re investing in a new warehouse in Milton Keynes.

Awards nominations We are thrilled our Race to Dubai incentive has been nominated in the “Best use of digital techniques and technologies” and “Best limited budget campaign” categories at the prestigious B2B Awards.

Smart technology

Technology is changing the face of the bathroom, and we’re very excited about the possibilities. This issue Training and developme explains how you can for individuals take advantage of smart technology in our main or teams feature on page 18.

This issue The Ideal Bathroom is 20 issues old! Thanks for reading and making it all possible.

CLUBBING TOGETHER FOR CHARITY This year’s golf days – hugely anticipated events and regular features in our social calendar – were once again a roaring success.

Mark Cunningham, North West ASM with his team about to tee off from the first tee.

The Northern event Sponsored by Essential Bathrooms, the Northern Golf Day was held at the spectacular Mottram Hall in Cheshire. Guests relished the chance to play on the 7,006 yard, par 72 championship course which is set in 270 acres of Cheshire’s finest parkland. 40 golfers from four countries enjoyed breakfast and 18 holes of golf followed by an evening BBQ and an awards presentation. The overall winner on the day was Richard Thorley from Pebbles Tiles and Stone with a total of 38 points. “Mottram Hall was a fantastic venue and it was great to see the event so well attended,” said Steve Hooley, Northern Regional Sales Manager. “Thankfully we were blessed with some great late summer weather which ensured we all had an enjoyable day in the Cheshire countryside.”

The Individual Winner’s Trophy presented to Richard Thorley of Pebbles Tiles and Stone

Reflecting on this year’s golf days, our Managing Director, John Bagshaw, said, “These golf days are popular events that both us and our customers look forward to. It’s all about building partnerships in an informal setting, and it’s a way to thank customers who have supported us, Essential Bathrooms and Roca throughout the years. It’s also an excellent forum to discuss wider issues in the bathroom industry.”

The Southern event Kindly sponsored by Roca, the Southern Golf Day was once again held at the fantastic Woburn Golf Club – home to three championship standard courses. This year golfers took on the Duchess course which, with its tree-lined fairways, presents a challenge to any level of golfer.

40 golfers took part in the day, which started with 18 holes of golf and was followed by a sit down evening meal, a presentation of awards and a charity auction. The individual prize was won by David Russell from Bayliss with an impressive score of 33 playing off a handicap of 10. Quite an achievement on a challenging course. Jon Fry, Roca’s Sales Director, said, “Roca were extremely pleased to be sponsoring Ideal’s Southern Golf Day. It was a great golfing day and an enjoyable, if competitive, event.” Together, both days raised a total of £2,060 for Ideal’s charity partner, Bernado’s, and Roca’s charity of choice, We Are Water Foundation. Once more, everyone at Ideal would like to extend a massive thank you to all of you who so kindly contributed.

RELIVING THE TRAY DAYS Bernard Robinson, Chairman of MX Trays, shares his story, and talks about the brand’s partnership with Ideal and its plans for the future.

How did you get started in the bathroom market? It was about 1972 and I was doing some work with Dolphin Showers. I ended up in their management team and realised that it was a big market so I started my own business. The shower market was so young and so new that a lot of people couldn’t get the suppliers or the products. I managed to get the products and started selling them out of the back of a car.

In November 2014 you had a devastating fire at your factory, but you were up and running again in days. How did you manage that? The fire was on a Thursday evening at 8.10pm. By 3.00pm on Monday afternoon we had moved to a factory 100 yards away from the original site. We’d taken out all the old machinery that we’d put into storage and we were back in business. The team who made it possible were a fantastic bunch. Every single person got involved and made it happen. Every single production mould had to be washed and checked – and there were hundreds of those alone.

How does the future look for MX Trays?

How do you see the market developing in the future?

The business will continue to grow. It’s got a £4 million investment in the production of shower trays. It’s the most modern and up-todate in the world, and probably makes the most shower trays. We’re currently making about 10,000 a week. That’s 111 an hour. Our current turnover in trays is about £18 million, however, MX also sell a wide range of electric showers, shower screens and shower accessories.

It is a tough market and there are lots of foreign competitors breaking into the British bathroom scene. For the last 40+ years MX has been innovating in all types of shower products from electric showers through to mixer valves, shower accessories and, of course, shower trays. We are constantly investing in our product range and our product development and this allows us to stay ahead of all competitors. You have to be prepared to invest in your products, production and employees.

MX Trays have supported Ideal over the years, and together you’ve increased business year on year. What do you attribute that success to?

Ideal Bathrooms Commercial Director, Danielle Lillis says “At Ideal Bathrooms we deliver over 20,000 shower trays every year and MX consistently perform as our number one supplier in this category. MX’s ability to continue trading in 2014 despite suffering such a devastating factory fire is testament to what a robust supplier they are… a bit like their trays!” For more information about MX Trays and its products, visit www.mx-group.com

It’s very much a team effort. We couldn’t have done it without Ideal. They give us great support. It has been one of those things where if you work as a team you get a team result. Because they are a national distributor they hold large stocks in all depots, which they can dispatch next day, offering great service and availability knowing they are supported by us at MX.

Showroom Manager Chris Henderson-Smith with his Essential Bathrooms wrapped brochure

IN FOCUS... NORDEN BATHROOMS Chris Henderson-Smith, Showroom Manager of Norden Bathrooms, shares his thoughts on customer needs, increasing trends towards minimalist design and killer sales tactics. Q. Why did Norden Bathrooms choose to partner with Ideal Bathrooms? We get daily delivery slots from them, they offer us great incentives – Race to Dubai and Race to Mauritius – they also support buying groups which is another bonus for us. They also have a decent returns policy and when issues arise (which is always inevitable in business) our ASM, David Garner, invariably sorts things out to our satisfaction.

Q. What do you like about working with Ideal? We have a great relationship with them. David, as I’ve already said, is great, and the people in the office are as well. Their service is quick and reliable.

Q. How do customer needs impact your showroom? Chris with Area Sales Manager David Garner

We have to display a mixed range of affordable products to meet the demands of a client base that is becoming more knowledgeable about the bathroom industry. We’re geared up to offer customers affordable luxury and a range of products. Over the decade people have become more aware of the options available through the internet and technology.

Q. How does your partnership with Ideal help you to meet those needs? They stock a range of brands that cater for all budgets, so in turn we are able to offer this broad choice to our customers. They’ve also got a great stock profile and deliveries are normally within client expectations. So it’s a mixture of lead times and range of products.

Q. What Ideal lines do you currently stock?

Large 2000 Sq Ft showroom on Kingston Road in Surrey

34

We don’t need to stock too much with daily deliveries! We stock and sell Aqualisa, Bette, Geberit, Essential, Roca, Stuart Turner and Vitra. With regard to specific lines, we’re very excited about the forthcoming Roca Inspira range.

Main showroom area featuring the bestselling Roca Victoria-N and innovative Meridian-N In-Tank

Q. Are there and particular products that you’ve found to be the most popular? Roca’s The Gap clean rim WC is popular, as are the clean rim pans in general. In addition we have had interest in the Roca In-Tank and sold to architects and individual customers. The innovative In-Tank has the cistern built into the WC itself and is a clever idea. Geberit concealed systems sell well and Aqualisa’s digital range is also very popular.

Q. What’s your killer sales tactic? Honesty and professional advice. As a family business that’s how we operate. We appreciate clients’ budgets and we help them to find the best bathroom for them. Our in-house design is complementary and that proves popular with customers. We won’t try and sell them something they don’t need, just for the sake of selling it.

Q. How do you drive visitors to your showroom? A large part of it is recommendations. Past customers recommending friends, family, and neighbours, or they might come as a referral from our vast array of plumbers and fitters. That happens quite a lot. We do a small amount of marketing and we’re looking to focus on that in 2017, but we’re doing well with how things are at the moment.

Brand new window setting showcasing the Bette Floor system

Q. What trends have you seen increasing? It’s been an option for ages but the concealed look is proving increasingly popular. We’re helping people obtain a sophisticated look with wall-hung WCs and recessed mirror cabinets etc. Walk-in showers are also increasing in demand. People want a simple, sleek, minimalist look in their bathroom.

Q. And how about decreasing? Just the usual stuff really. We’re five years young, so have witnessed a lot of changing trends already. Bidets are less popular, especially with the introduction of self-cleaning toilets. I guess you could say body jets as well, they were a flash in the pan!

GETTING TO KNOW KINEDO Tim Pestell, Kinedo’s Managing Director, talks about the brand’s achievements, the challenges it’s facing and its future plans.

Kinemagic Serenity all-in-one shower cubicle

36

0800 634 2600 | atyourservice@idealbathrooms.com | www.idealbathrooms.com

How does the Kinedo range sit alongside Saniflo, and what are the future plans for the two brands? The obvious answer is that we have the same customer base and the same customer service team. Secondly, many shower installations in weird and wonderful places very often need a waste pump to make the shower work. So we have a Saniflo product that allows consumers to put a shower where they might not otherwise be able to. Saniflo has some major project launches in early 2017, including some very large lifting stations. The Kinedo range of cubicles will continue to expand and we are also launching a range of shower trays in 2017.

What do consumers need from Kinedo and how are you catering to those needs? One of the biggest problems with any traditional shower enclosure installation is that the potential for leakage is quite high. You don’t get that with our shower cubicles. They are fit-and-forget, leak-proof and silicone-free. Secondly, when a consumer is buying a Kinedo cubicle they are buying the complete shower with the tray, shower control and doors. The complete unit comes from one manufacturer and importantly, the installation time of the cubicle is very quick. A Kinedo cubicle takes less than one day to fit.

What were the most recent changes to the Kinedo lines and what inspired those changes? The biggest change in the last couple of years has been that we’re moving away from plastic-backed shower cubicles towards all glass cubicles, so the back panel is opaque glass. We also launched a walk-in shower bath last year. It’s a truly-inclusive, multigenerational bathing product. One of the biggest fears for older people is slipping in the bathroom, so our Kinemagic range has an anti-slip shower tray for extra peace of mind. Kinedo cubicles are very easy to keep clean because there are no tiles or grout to get dirty.

What are the key things you wish all showroom managers knew about Kinedo?

What are the key areas of focus for Kinedo moving forwards?

It’s important that showrooms realise we are selling them answers to problems, not just another shower enclosure. Kinedo is part of Saniflo, which means we’re part of a very large manufacturing company. It’s good for showrooms to know that we design and manufacture our products. We’re not buying in units from all over the world.

We currently have a Kinedo Roadshow which is travelling around showrooms and plumbers’ merchants. We’re using the Roadshow to really establish the brand and promote the Kinedo range. We are also recruiting installers to become proficient at installing Kinedo showers. Moving forward we are concentrating on the new build market.

What challenges are Kinedo currently facing? When you mention shower cubicles to people they think of an institutionalised type of product, say for schools or something similar. Our products have moved on a very long way from these early concepts. The second challenge we have is there are many imported enclosures coming from unknown brands into the UK. The third is gaining acceptance of the shower cubicle over the shower enclosure and gaining acceptance of our brand within the showrooms.

How are Kinedo meeting the needs of your retail partners? We are a one-stop-shop. Any issues that people have, or any support that they need, it’s all provided by the same team. And you have the backing of a Europeanmanufactured product from a very strong brand. Our national sales team are there to support the showrooms. All our Kinedo products are held in stock in the UK so we have good lead times. Our marketing support is extensive. If you open a trade magazine you will more often than not see advertising from Kinedo or Saniflo.

What has been Kinedo’s biggest achievement so far? The increasing acceptance of quite a number of medium-sized building developers in the UK who are now using Kinedo by choice, because of the attributes I’ve mentioned previously. We are growing on the back of our reputation.

The latest marketplace news | THE IDEAL BATHROOM

WHO IS ALAN AYERS? Tavistock’s Sales Director talks about his role, his influences and his dream superpower.

What does your role at Tavistock involve?

What goals did you set yourself for 2016?

What do you like to do outside of work?

I manage the Tavistock distribution channel along with a sales team of BDMs who service, support, develop and work alongside distribution salesforces to support the independent merchant and bathroom retailer.

To deliver double digit growth through a strong and diverse professional sales team.

I like to walk my gun dog and enjoy all forms of country pursuits, along with entertaining, of course. I’ve also been playing cricket for many years in my local team.

What does an average day of work look like for you? I don’t think I have an average day due to the diversity of my role which involves attending national account, distribution meetings, dual calling with my BDMs and/ or distribution sales teams. I also get involved with New Product Development, design, operational meetings at HQ, as well attending strategic meetings where we set the criteria for continued development of the Tavistock brand.

What achievement in your role as Sales Director are you most proud of? I am most proud of seeing the Tavistock brand develop from less than a £1 million business to a £14+ million business from when I joined.

What was your first ever job? My first ever job was a chef.

42

Who has had the biggest influence on your career? The people who have most influenced my career are both the Roper brothers who own and run the business, because they have continued to invest in both me and the Tavistock brand in both good times and bad. They always keep one eye on the long term health of the business, which is one of the upsides of being privately owned.

How has the industry changed since you started? The internet has had a big part to play in reshaping the bathroom industry, but also I think own label ranges have put more pressure on the ‘brands’ to deliver added value to both distribution and retailers in terms of price, design, quality, innovation and service.

What’s the best present you’ve ever received?

What would surprise us most about you? I was the first ever Evesham Round Table chairman to complete two terms, and I’ve also helped my local high school raise a substantial sum to achieve their sports college status.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why? Time travel, which would allow me to go back and change things that I got wrong at the time.

Describe yourself in three words. Kind, loyal, fun.

It was a 1-hour introduction to clay shooting which has become a hobby, but also I have been involved in competitions at the highest level.
