The guide has been updated with information on all panels including the new additions launched at KBB earlier this year. HOW HAS COVID-19 IMPACTED THE INDUSTRY? We hear from industry leading experts on a post-COVID world and adaping to the new normal.

As businesses across the globe begin to adapt and discover their new normal, we’re keen to discover what impact Covid-19 has had on the industry, what the post-Covid world looks like, and how people are preparing for a very different future. We spoke to leading industry experts to find out. At the height of lockdown, stores and warehouses were closed, trade shows were cancelled and supply chains were broken. What’s more, nobody seemed to know when they would be up and running again. In May, nearly 35 per cent of retailers in our post-lockdown survey said they didn’t know when – or if - they would be able to reopen. For some manufacturers however, it was near enough business as usual. Darren Allison, Managing Director of Bayswater Bathrooms, said: “We kept manufacturing the whole way through, although we did furlough some of the team. We were lucky in that before lockdown, we’d seen a growth in the business and made sure we had stock on the ground. I think for a lot of manufacturers, distributors and retailers, the problem arose when there was a shortage of the actual products and materials. We also benefited from our parent group, BC Designs International, being able to continue to export; as one country closed, another opened up, and so we were able to continue working.”

John Bagshaw, Managing Director of International Decorative Surfaces explains they stayed open throughout lockdown to provide for essential services, running at 20% of their turnover. Sales quickly bounced back and they are now running at 90%, with all staff off furlough, and were fortunate enough to not make any redundancies. Mark Larden, Managing Director of Geberit, revealed that the pandemic led the firm to look at new ways of working, while keeping the health – both physical and mental – of their team as a top priority. “This level of crisis can put a lot of stress on people, and everybody handles this differently depending on their character and situation. We have talked openly to our employees on a weekly basis through the crisis, and this type of communication has helped people and reassure them. We have supported the teams with a more flexible approach to work hours, as many colleagues have had to cope with home schooling whilst schools were closed. Most of all, the Geberit team has been incredibly flexible and have really pulled together, and this is something I am extremely grateful to be a part of.” Our post-lockdown survey showed that nearly 80 per cent of those showrooms that reopened were offering hand sanitising stations, while 73 per cent were restricting the numbers of customers in store. Darren states “we have to respect retailers wishes and not just turn up at their premises like we used to, everything has to be by appointment only.”

NHS statement during Covid-19 For many showrooms, they are seeing a remarkable recovery in sales, although whether this is from pent-up demand or will be sustainable is yet to be seen. The great thing is that it seems potential customers visiting showrooms or enquiring online are doing it with intent, leading to higher sales conversion rates, which means a retailers’ efforts are being rewarded more regularly.

Customers will also be looking for brands they can rely on moving forwards after the uncertainty of the past few months, as well as looking for a different type of product, as Mark Larden explains. “I think customers will want to put their trust even more into established brands that have a track record of service, quality and range of products,” he said. “We have seen a greater demand for infrared and wall hung products, as easy clean and touch-less control becomes an even greater requirement in today’s bathrooms.”

The challenge now is regularly driving these enquiries. John adds “With travel restrictions still in place, people have been choosing to renovate bathrooms rather than going on holiday, which has been very positive for the industry”. Research quoted in BKU revealed millions of consumers are spending more money than usual on their homes as a direct result of lockdown, with 75 per cent of Brits planning further improvements over the next year, and 14 per cent of those having their bathroom in their sights. We were pleased to see the Government taking measures to boost the economy, not least of which was the introduction of a stamp duty holiday; the threshold has been raised from £125,000 to £500,000, meaning that nearly nine out of 10 transactions will no longer be subject to it. Like many manufacturers, Darren Allison highly approves of such measures, saying: “The stamp duty holiday is another boost for the industry. Probably renovate the kitchen and bathroom, so that’s another positive for the market as far as I can see.” Our industry leading experts also told us of the importance of planning for the end of the pandemic. Darren Allison, says that, unlike some firms, they continued with their PR and marketing activities, which has paid dividends. “We actually doubled expenditure, which was a difficult decision to make at the start of lockdown. Looking back though, it’s the best one we made, to make sure that people didn’t forget about Bayswater.” John Bagshaw stated that in preparation for ongoing restrictions, IDS have invested in their technology to ensure that they are still able to operate with 100% capacity, working remotely if necessary.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR OUR RETAILERS?

Having a digital presence is one of the most important lessons to be learnt during the pandemic, with the online market booming whilst people were in lockdown. Research quoted in BKU revealed 42 per cent of those surveyed expressed concerns about visiting showrooms, preferring instead to browse online, highlighting the need for retailers and brands to ensure they have a strong digital presence. Darren said “the need to embrace technology in order to get our key marketing messages to retailers and consumers is vital. We are also embracing Zoom and Microsoft teams more than ever before”.

Gary Williams, Managing Director of Cu-Plas, Isle of Man explains how his business has been impacted due to the pandemic.

How has the global pandemic impacted your business? The pandemic impacted our business mainly April and May. Our business didn’t come to a complete standstill as we were allowed to open for essential services 3 hours daily. We put the appropriate protection for staff and customers following guidance from the builders merchant federation on and off Island. Sales obviously reduced to the lowest level in our 20 year history in April but towards the end of May things were starting to become more normal. We are very lucky to live on an island that has a natural border and easy way to stop the influx of people and transmission rates. As a result our customers chose not to go on holiday and they have refurbished their bathrooms instead. This has seen a very busy period over the last 2 1/2 months and a record June turnover.

Do you think coronavirus will have a long-term impact on the industry, if so how? I think the mid to short term will be a great time for us to make money, but long term this will inevitably have a down turn, especially when customers feel they are safe to travel again.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently to help your business, and customers, through the pandemic? I wish we had an online presence for the period when we couldn’t open our doors, customers would have been able to still shop and bring in some income. We are now in discussions with our IT company to introduce a transactional website.

It is heartening to see such positivity in the bathroom industry; while life remains uncertain in so many ways, the resilience, ingenuity and positive attitude of manufacturers and retailers will stand us all in good stead for whatever the future holds. A desire for new products and new trends is high among the public, and those of us in the home improvements industry are well-placed to meet this demand – so here’s to 2021!

The Oleas ™ collection consists of four minimalist, functional models that fit effortlessly into any design. The ProSys selection of pre-wall frames come in a variety of depths and heights, providing flexible installation solutions for wall-hung WCs, basins, and urinals. The flexibility of a pre-wall frame enables the design of a room to be uninhibited and helps to save on space, whilst realising a bathroom’s full design potential. With a durable, strong material, the frames are resistant to both corrosion and scratches, which means they will stand the test of time. Full pre-wall frames are available in 1150mm and 820mm heights with 820mm frames having the choice of either front or top flush plate installation. IN FOCUS... SHORELINE BATHROOMS After 30 years working across the retail sector, brother and sister Brian Robson and Linda Sedgwick set up Shoreline Bathrooms in 2012. Here, the pair, who are both company directors, tell us how they got started – and how coronavirus affected them. Q. Can you tell us how and when you got into the bathroom industry? Brian: I worked for an independent bathroom retailer for 30 years, starting as a sales assistant and working my way up to showroom manager. Linda: I worked in retail management for 28 years. The idea to set up Shoreline came about on a long drive. We’d always wanted to work together, and it seemed to be the right time.

Q. Covid-19 has had a major impact on the bathroom industry in 2020; how did it affect your business?

Brian: These have been unprecedented times, extraordinary to live and work through. It did have a financial impact, as we had to close for eight weeks. However, coming back, the market feels buoyant. Linda: One thing we’ve noticed is that, as people can’t go on Holiday, they’re spending that money on their homes instead.

Q. Whilst all non-essential business were forced to close during lockdown, how did you spend the time investing and adapting your showroom? Brian: We’ve set up hand sanitiser stations, we display distancing information and we ask shoppers to wear face masks – the staff do too, which customers appreciate. Linda: We constantly look at the showroom through our customers’ eyes, and make sure we conform to Government guidelines.

Q. What long-term impact do you believe Covid-19 will have on the bathroom industry?

Brian: I’d like to think it won’t be too detrimental. We’re all in this together and all we can do is keep moving forward. Linda: It depends on how the Government claims back all the money they’ve spent; we all know that needs to be paid back, which could impact on people’s spending.

Q. How does your business stand out from the crowd? Brian: We’re a family business which engages with customers on a personal level. Linda: We always put customers first. We’re not just salespeople, we’re here to here to help, advise and guide.

Q. Do you believe it’s important to showcase a variety of brands and products in your showroom? If so, why? Brian: It’s like a restaurant; you’ve got to have an interesting menu to inspire and excite. Linda: It’s also vital to have affordable price points, offering high- quality products, even on a budget.

Q. How do you feel Ideal Bathrooms supports you as a retailer? Brian: Area sales manager Mark Smedley’s help was amazing when we were setting up and he’s always been there for us. Ideal offer a range of brands and so we have developed a really good portfolio. Linda: Ideal offer us really good support, backed up with knowledge and enthusiasm. The sales staff are also fantastic, they really look after us with regards to stock.

Q. What’s in the pipeline for Shoreline Bathrooms? Brian: Right now, our priority is making sure we can deliver our services. Linda: We might launch a new showroom – never say never! We’re proud of what we’ve achieved over the past eight years.

Q. What bathroom trends do you think will make headlines for 2021? Brian: I think colours in sanitaryware will make a comeback. Linda: Consumers are becoming more tech-savvy, and will demand more smart technology from their bathrooms.

Q. What are the ingredients to be a successful bathroom retailer moving forward? Brian: A passion for what you’re doing and looking after your customers. They’re key for any business. Linda: Do everything with your customer in mind. Be a good listener and a good communicator.

WHO IS... RICHARD NICHOLLS Speaking exclusively to Ideal, Richard Nicholls, managing director of Sanipex UK in the UK and Europe, reveals all about how he got started in the industry and who inspires him the most.

Q. Covid-19 has impacted hundreds of thousands of businesses across the country, how do you feel it’s affected the bathroom industry? The industry is resilient, but Covid has impacted buying patterns. However, we’re seeing a fast recovery driven by staycations and cost of living savings, as well as a rise in demand for in-home touchless technologies.

Q. You’ve led a very successful career in the bathroom world; how and when did you get into the industry? I started in 1994 as a graduate trainee at Wolseley. The business itself, and the graduate training programme, inspired me, rather than a desire to sell toilets for a living!

Q. How has the bathroom industry changed in the last decade in your eyes? The bathroom has become as important as the kitchen. We’ve seen demand from consumers to replicate the luxurious feel of hotels and spas, as we become a nation of “experience-sharers” through social media.

Q. What bathroom trends do you think will make headlines in 2021? We see three key trends emerging over the next year: industrial, biophilia and personalisation. The industrial trend is going nowhere, and 2020 was one of the most successful years we’ve had with our Industrial Revolution-inspired range. Biophilia is all about bringing the outdoors in, and reconnecting with nature, through the use and combination of different materials and textures, such as brushed metals and wood. In terms of personalisation, we’re starting to see people thinking more about what they like, rather than following trends and second-guessing what will add value to the property, It’s driven by social media.

Q. BagnoDesign has recently announced its exclusive partnership with Ideal Bathrooms. What does working with one of the UK’s leading distributors mean to the company? For BagnoDesign, it will really allow us to accelerate our growth plans. We’ve always worked hard on our design; working with Ideal gives us access to a diverse customer base and marketleading service.

We can focus on product development and maintaining our reputation for design, while Ideal acts as our operational service provider – it’s the perfect partnership.

Q. What’s next for BagnoDesign? Our priority is growth, delivering excellent products and services to our retail partners via Ideal. We also want to continue leading the market in terms of design, and have that remain at the forefront of our brand.

Q. What will the bathroom world look like in 10 years time? For me, demand for design will remain, and while there will always be a market for price-led bathrooms, consumers will also continue to invest to add value to their property. Social media will continue to play a part in creating aspirations, but there will also be an increased focus on health and well-being, and recreating the spa experience at home – precipitated by Covid-19 restrictions.

Q. You’ve had many career highlights over the years, but which would you say is your favourite? Working on the 2012 London Olympics has to be up there. We delivered projects for the athletes’ village, the velodrome and the aquatic centre, and I even got to attend the Olympic Gold Ball, along with around 2,000 gold medallists.

Q. Who have been the biggest influencers in your career? The two directors at Wolseley, Keith Jones and Ken Evans, for the direction and drive they gave to such a big business. Today, it has to be Sanipex group MD Daryl Barker, who is the most visionary entrepreneur in the industry. His flair for design and the ability to see opportunities in emerging markets are remarkable – there’s nobody like him.

Q. If you could invite anyone for dinner, dead or alive, who would it be? Marcelo Bielsa, the Leeds United manager. I’d like to know how he manages to continually motivate a team that has been so close to greatness and failed as many times, before finally being promoted to the Premiership.

Q. What is your guilty pleasure? After a hard week, a weekend with five kids (and a sixth on the way!) a glass of red wine – or maybe two!
