I hope that you remained fit, healthy and well throughout 2020. At the end of 2020 we conducted our Industry Report survey. Some key stats; more than 5% of respondents said they estimated a sales growth of more than 20% in 2020, and over 50% of retailers say they are confident in the market for the upcoming year. Ideal Standard refreshes online presence with new website
Ideal Standard has launched its new Cerafine D and O ranges – two easy-to-clean brassware collections which feature outstanding performance capabilities and stunning aesthetics for homeowners.
Ideal Standard has refreshed its online presence with a new website, designed to meet the growing trend for omnichannel retail models.
Both collections comprise of basin mixers, mini basin mixers, dual controlled bath fillers and dual controlled bath shower mixers. Cerafine D products incorporate soft, geometric shapes to reflect current home design trends, and are able to stylishly complement both square and round-styled ceramic suites. Cerafine O brassware features slim, elegant cylindrical spouts, and is suited to more minimalist bathrooms.
The new site improves user experience and gives retailers, as well as consumers, access to a wide range of support and advice. The move comes as part of Ideal Standard’s ambition to promote greater levels of responsible retailing.
All Cerafine basin mixers are equipped with a 5l/min aerator limiting the maximum water flow to help the end user save on utility bills. Comfort is further enhanced by the inclusion of LightMove® technology, allowing easier temperature adjustment. The basin mixers in both collections also incorporate Ideal Standard’s unique FirmaFlow® ceramic cartridge, which has a lifetime of 500,000 operating cycles – more than twice the requirement to meet WRAS standards.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM 2020 A POSITIVE OUTLOOK DESPITE THE PANDEMIC
Our 2020 Ideal Industry Report is the most intriguing yet, showing the real-time effects of living through such unprecedented times. And we’re pleased to say that the results are in – and they look pretty positive. An element we really wanted to hone in on this year was the use of digital marketing and sales tools – whether websites or social media. With showrooms closed and potential customers urged to stay at home, a digital presence has, for most of the year, been the only way to stay in contact with customers and suppliers.
Key stats from the 2020 Ideal Industry Report:
One of the first questions we asked in the report was how bathroom retailers felt about the future as we head into 2021, with more than half saying they were either confident or very confident. This is reflected in the responses concerning projected sales growth in 2021, with the majority of respondents expecting growth of at least five per cent.
So, when people are making the choice to revamp their bathrooms, where are they finding the retailers? The vast majority (95 per cent) of respondents cited word of mouth as one of the key ways of attracting new customers – this compares with 73 per cent in the last Industry Report, from 2018. The next two most common business growth methods were showroom foot traffic at 53 per cent, and websites at 51 per cent – considerably higher than 2018’s findings of 25 per cent and 18 per cent respectively.
With all this upheaval, many industries have faced major challenges, ranging from total collapse to major restructuring – but how has the bathroom world fared?
This confidence, which was clear in our report, can be seen reflected in the trends across the wider home improvement market; pent-up demand, reduction in travel and an increase in time spent in the home is leading to a surge in households looking to undertake some form of home improvement. According to a recent survey, more than half of those questioned are planning on spending an average of £6,500 per household on developments over the next year.
Last year was quite the year. 2020 featured a Covid-19 pandemic, repeated national lockdowns to bring the rate of infection down, and now, finally, the rollout of a coronavirus vaccine.

With 95 per cent of retailer respondents having some form of website – a one per cent increase from 2018 – of these only 15 per cent had an e-commerce site, allowing customers to purchase online; which is down two per cent on the previous report. In fact, the trend shows a longer-term decline in retailers offering e-commerce sites; whether this reverses in the future as a consequence of lockdowns remains to be seen. However, the use of social media is on the rise; 91 per cent in 2020 compared with 85 per cent two years ago. The biggest rise has been for the use of Instagram – which makes sense for such a visual industry – doubling from 26 per cent in 2018 to 52 per cent this year. However, Facebook still remains the most popular platform for bathroom retailers, with 87 per cent of those using social media having a presence on the site. While none of our findings have been overly surprising, it is good to see a general air of quiet confidence throughout the bathroom industry, and an increasing willingness to think of new ways to do business.

Established in 1963, Fairfield Builders Supplies, based in Buxton, Derbyshire is a long-established merchant, which has gone from strength-to-strength over the last five decades. We spoke to the firm’s partner Kevan Allsopp and bathroom designer Leanne Dilworth about the developments within the company and how they are using technology to help them through the coronavirus pandemic. Q. Let’s take a trip down memory lane; can you tell us about the key developments within Fairfield Builders Supplies? Kevan:
The business has sold plumbing and essential bathroom supplies from the start and has always been a typical ‘merchants’ showroom’. In 2019 we decided we wanted to create a top-end bathroom showroom and we became one of the first to operate a CAD design service using Virtual Worlds design software.
Leanne: When we expanded, we made the decision to relocate due to a lack of growth opportunity at our existing showroom for our ever-growing business and the company has gone from strength to strength since then. Bayswater 1200mm 4-door curved basin cabinet
Q. Covid-19 has continued to impact the industry in many ways. What lessons have you learned from the pandemic? Kevan:
We’ve learned many lessons but all ones which will help us to continue to grow. It’s been a challenging time and we’ve experienced delays due to stock shortages, but we have a great support system in place from our suppliers. Working with Ideal Bathrooms’ online ordering system has been such a massive help as we can immediately check stock levels and source alternative products.
Leanne: To have as much stock in as possible and order in advance! As expected, UK manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand, so we’ve certainly learned to plan well in advance.
Q. Have you made any significant digital / tech investments to help you through the lockdown periods to adapt your services and continue to meet clients’ needs? Kevan: We have been promoting the business a lot more on Facebook than we normally would, to share the message that you don’t actually need to come to the showroom as it can be virtually viewed on Google. Leanne: We are doing a lot more via email and phone, such as design consultations, but it’s great to be able to offer a virtual showroom tour to customers as they can safely view our products without having to be in the room. ideal Standard Concept Air toilet, cistern, basin and pedestal

Q. How do you think Covid-19 will affect the industry moving forward? Leanne: I think the building industry is going to be fine and thrive. A lot of people have been spending their holiday money on bathrooms and renovations, and we’ve really noticed this change in mindset as we’ve been very busy, and it’s been a really good year for sales.
Q. You have a thriving business website and social media accounts; why did you decide to invest in these digital platforms for your company? Leanne: People don’t necessarily read the local paper, or listen to the local radio anymore, and our area is very big, so social media has helped us to reach more people.
Q. Why do you believe it’s important for retailers and merchants to have a digital presence? Kevan: Digital is the future and it’s often the first place people will look for information on a business, so it’s very important to have an online presence.
Q. You’ve worked with Ideal Bathrooms for 21 years, what do you like most about working with the team? Leanne: They very rarely let you down and the online system is amazing – it shows you live stock levels so you can quickly find an answer to your question without having to call anyone. They are always really efficient with deliveries, and they are always our first port of call.
Q. How does Fairfield Builders Supplies stand out from the crowd? Leanne: Our excellent, high-quality design service – we really do go to town on our designs. We always listen to the customer and their needs to make sure the design suits their requirements. I can sometimes spend a few days working on a design because I just want it to be perfect for the customer.
Q. What’s next for Fairfield Builders Supplies? Leanne: We’ve just taken on a new paint supplier to develop our interior side, which has enabled us to offer a complete project, so along with a new bathroom the customer can also choose new wallpapers and paints to go along with it.
Q. Which bathroom trends do you see hitting the headlines in 2021? Leanne: I think people are moving away from the greys. I’d like to see more colours coming on the market. I’m very much into greens and more funky mustard yellows! Beige and whites are certainly becoming more popular too.
Brexit and Covid vaccine A Brexit deal was reached meaning no additional import tariffs were imposed and we left the EU on 31st December. Both the Pfizer & the Oxford vaccine have been approved and mass rollout has begun in the UK, we hope to be able to return to slow down the spread of Covid-19 and begin to adjust to a new normal way of living.

Q. As we all know new rules under Brexit will come into force on January 1st, tell us how you think it will impact and benefit the bathroom world? Kevan: I can imagine we’ll see price increases and perhaps delivery delays but we will certainly work through any obstacles we may face to ensure our customers are well looked after.

WHO IS... ROB HARRISON In this edition of The Ideal Bathroom, we had the chance to speak with Robert Harrison, Managing Director of Cavalier Bathrooms, for a chat – virtually, of course. He talked to us about Covid, Cavalier and cricket – and why the bathroom industry is in his blood.
Q. You’ve been in the industry for over two decades; tell us the story of how you entered the bathroom world. To be honest, I was born into it. I am the third generation of a family who have been involved in bathroom manufacturing for 100 years. With regard to Cavalier specifically, I started at age 17 on the factory floor and have worked in every department, including all production areas, giving me valuable experience of every aspect of the business.
Q. Cavalier has strengthened its relationship with Ideal Bathrooms further by introducing its brand Aquadart to the distributor’s portfolio. What was the reason behind your change in strategy to offer Aquadart through a distributor? Aquadart has become one of the fastest growing ranges of enclosures in recent years and, as a consequence, we have been experiencing increased demand from retailers nationally. Opening it up to distribution allows us to extend its reach to new and existing retailers whilst also providing a next day service which is greatly valued.
Q. There have been many changes in the industry over the last year as we fight through the pandemic. What long-term impact do you think Covid-19 will have for retailers? I wouldn’t really like to make any general assumptions of how Covid will impact on all retailers – as we have seen over the past 12 months, there are no guarantees. I’m afraid we have not seen the end of Covid yet and therefore don’t fully understand the full impact of the illness, or the measures we continue to take. All I would like to say is that we have the greatest sympathy for how challenging this year has been for our retailers and to reiterate that we will try to support them to the best of our abilities.
Q. What would be your key advice to retailers as we emerge from the pandemic? I believe that keeping up a healthy product supply and strong relationships with manufacturers and distribution will be key in allowing retailers to respond and meet the unprecedented demand for bathroom products. However, with the third full lockdown announced in January, we’ll have to wait and see what impact this has on buying trends and consumer confidence.
Q. You’ve developed a great relationship with Ideal Bathrooms through Cavalier’s brand, April Products, over the last five years. How does the distributor support your brand? As a leading national distributor, Ideal excels at distributing our brands and products to retailers with the company’s next-day service. Combined with their high levels of customer service, this has really increased our reach over the course of our working relationship.

Q. It’s an incredibly exciting time for Cavalier to be expanding your partnership with Ideal Bathrooms. What can we expect next from Cavalier? Put simply, even more product innovation through Aquadart – we’re always looking to inspire!
Q. Who has been the biggest influencer in your career? I’d have to say my father. He brought me into this industry and gave me the space and the tools I needed to start from the bottom and work my way up.
Q. What is your guilty pleasure? I love travel; long-distance holidays are my passion and I can’t wait until we’re able to travel freely again. Closer to home, I love to indulge in good food and wine – luckily, they’re still allowed.
Q. If you could have five dinner guests, dead or alive, who would they be? American comedian Larry David, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, film director Christopher Nolan, Winston Churchill and former England international cricketer Kevin Pietersen – a mixed bag!
