Welcome to 2022’s final edition of The Ideal Bathroom magazine. It’s been a bumpy couple of months, with the loss of our beloved Queen, two new prime minister’s and the cloud of a cost of living crisis looming over us all. However, despite prices rising, the bathroom industry looks set to remain buoyant. On pages 13-14 we discuss why, with a big push on sustainability and the trends we’re likely to see next year making an appearance.
We’re taking a deep dive into the striking Montana collection on pages 10-11. This range, part of our Essential offering, gives customers an affordable yet stylish choice that’s built to last.
This edition’s showroom focus takes a trip across the water to Jaren Bathrooms on the Isle of Wight. Read what Showroom Manager Reece has to say about island life on pages 36-37.
Hot off the press, and central to Roca’s future plans, is its stunning Mediterranean-inspired Ona collection. You can read all about it on pages 30-31
We’ve also had the pleasure of chatting with the new Managing Director of Roca, Rashpal Sidhu, in our ‘Who Is’ feature on pages 38-39. Rashpal is a bathroom industry heavyweight, having worked in the business for many years. He spoke to us about how it feels to be stepping into the shoes of Alan Dodds as Managing Director after 15 years, as UK Finance and Service Director. Roca’s new retail strategy and what three things he would want with him if he was shipwrecked on a desert island.
Until next time!

GROHE’s cold-start taps facilitate users to reduce their energy usage, resulting in reduced bills and improved energy efficiency within the home.
Available across their most popular designs, GROHE’s SilkMove ES technology provides users with a user-friendly energy-saving solution. SilkMove ES technology, where ES stands for Energy Saving, equips basin mixers with a cold-start function, meaning the tap will only supply cold water when the lever is in the middle position. This results in making running warm water a conscious decision, helping to reduce the use of warm water unnecessarily, thus saving on energy.
Alongside GROHE’s cold-start technology, many of the tap models include GROHE’s EcoJoy technology, which further supports with conscious consumption. GROHE Ecojoy provides a reduced water flow, with up to 50% less water consumption without compromising on performance, providing households with the added bonus of saving on water, alongside energy.
GROHE supports with resource-efficiency and conscious consumption throughout its product portfolio and brand initiatives, with sustainability as a core value. GROHE and LIXIL most recently announced the inauguration of a solar park at Albergaria production site, which will provide 8% of the production site’s energy requirements. Furthermore, GROHE has succeeded in their initiative to drastically reduce the use of plastic packaging and has removed all unnecessary plastics from their packaging as of January 2022. The ability for customers to visualise their new bathroom has become an integral part of selling to the consumer.
Showerwall is pleased to announce that not only can you access the Showerwall Visualiser online, but its panels are now available on both Virtual Worlds and 2020 spaces.
The new partnerships make it simple for retailers to showcase the latest trends in the market such as Terrazzo, minimalistic prints, and classic tile designs into their bathroom design. Visually appealing and a waterproof system, Showerwall wall panelling also allows for grout-free installation and these high-performance surfaces are easy to clean and maintain. Having no grout lines means that there is no space for dirt, mould, or bacteria to linger, making this a popular choice for consumers looking for a hygienic and long lasting solution.
In addition, the large format panels are flexible for use around the home, from the shower to behind basins and to create feature walls with a wow factor. To find out more visit idealbathrooms.com

“Our experienced design team have worked tirelessly to recreate the characteristics, shapes and standards expected of traditional products, which complement the Bayswater brand effortlessly.
“The Victrion furniture is foil-wrapped and offers a matt effect featuring lacquered technology. It’s been designed to stand the test of time while staying true to the classic shapes and colours it’s inspired by.”
Ideal Bathroom’s partnership with Bayswater goes back to 2017 when Managing Director Darren Allison was looking for a UK-wide distributor. Since then, the partnership has grown year-on-year.
Darren said: “Our relationship with Ideal has gone from strength to strength, so they were the obvious choice when looking for a distribution partner for this latest range of bathroom furniture. We can always rely on them to deliver excellent results, having been in partnership for a number of years now.”

• Available in 3 gloss polyurethane painted finishes; Gloss White, Light Grey and Forest Green
• Soft-close doors and drawers
• Wall hung and floor standing units available in sizes 500 and 600mm
• Cloakroom unit 400mm

Andrew Cotterill, Category Manager of Essential, said: “We are incredibly passionate about giving our retailers a variety of choices which meet their customers’ demands for on-trend styles and colours.
“The Montana range offers impressive durability for a budget-friendly price. It boasts superior polyurethane painted products, which are less susceptible to water ingress and built to last.”
This latest collection adds to Essential’s growing portfolio, joining the recent industrial look matt black bath screens and steel baths.
The stylish bath screens are both hard-wearing and easy to clean, having been treated with a 3M™ easy clean coating. The innovative coating allows water to simply roll off the glass, taking any residue from soap or dirt with it, helping to retain that immaculate, just-bought finish for longer and significantly reducing cleaning time.
The range is made up of five striking designs, each in either 5mm or 6mm thickness with a height of 1400mm and a 90-degree fold direction.
Andrew said: “These on-trend matt black bath screens have proven to be a hit over the past few years, and we are excited to have them in our collection of products. They tap into a continuing industrial trend and add a contemporary, modern edge to any style of bathroom.”
The steel bath collection, which comprises 10 models, is perfect for customers who enjoy a long soak in a tub while demanding a high-quality, stylish finish. It combines the strength of steel construction with clean, crisp lines and edges, while also providing greater heat conductivity compared with modern acrylic models, meaning water stays hotter for longer – better for the environment, and customers’ wallets.
Andrew added: “Constantly topping up hot water can make an otherwise relaxing bath a chore, so a steel bath is a great choice for those who like a long hot soak. They’re also hard-wearing and durable, making them perfect for all sorts of customers.
“The growing Essential collection offers stylish yet practical bathroom solutions at budget-friendly prices. We are sure customers will appreciate the stunning, modern designs and competitive price point.”

What does the future hold for the home improvement sector?
As we approach winter and the cost of living and rising inflation bite, you may be wondering what the future holds for the home improvement sector.
While every business and individual will need to ride the price increase storm over the coming months, fortunately, the business-to-consumer outlook is predicted to remain buoyant according to some experts. In fact, the cost of living crisis is thought to be behind the rise in the number of households deciding to make home improvements within the next year. According to research conducted by the Mortgage Advice Bureau, of the improvements, 26% said they planned to install a new bathroom, which should give confidence to suppliers, retailers and fitters alike.
So why are consumers looking to make home improvements when the cost of living is set to increase? The Mortgage Advice Bureau found that for 50%, it is to improve the look of their property, but for nearly the same number again (43%), it is to improve their home’s efficiency and EPC ratings to mitigate the soaring energy bills.
Indeed, the Kitchen Bathroom Buying Group (KBBG) is optimistic about the coming months, despite the economic uncertainty, citing householders’ desire to future-proof their homes for the long-term by investing in sustainable technology as a reason to remain positive.
This is a timely reminder of the government’s plan to achieve net-zero gas emissions by 2050; an ambitious target that will take a committed and sustained effort from all reaches of society. In addition to cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, it is recognised that if water efficiency action is not increased, the UK could be hit by water shortages by 2050.
Water is a precious resource and it can’t be taken for granted. The UK is a typically rainy country, which often distracts from the issue. However, due to climate change, we are seeing increasingly hot
summers, meaning the water supply will become more unpredictable. In fact, many areas of the country are already subject to water stress, with 12 out of the 23 water companies rated as being under ‘serious’ stress by the Environment Agency.
Bathroom technology is continuously changing, no more so than with ways to increase water efficiency, helping to save the planet at the same time. The average amount of water used per person in the UK is 150 litres a day; to be sustainable, this needs to be reduced to 110 litres.
As bathroom suppliers and retailers, we have a part to play in educating our customers on how this can be achieved. Low-flow and aerated showerheads reduce water flow without compromising on pressure, and a dual-flush toilet typically saves around six litres of water per flush compared to old-style flush systems. Simply replacing a leaking toilet can save between 200 to 400 litres of water a day while upgrading a dripping tap can save around 5,500 litres per year. Using water limiting products, such as the GROHE Ecojoy taps, could save up to 50% of water compared to a standard tap.
GROHE cold-start taps are another way of improving energy efficiency in bathrooms. By only providing cold water when the tap lever is in the middle position, it makes running warm water a conscious decision and thus prevents unnecessary heating.
Bathroom retailers also need to play their part in building a more sustainable planet by investing in eco-friendly manufacturing activities. Focusing on sustainability makes good business sense, especially when energy prices are high. By implementing automated and progressive technology, applying eco-design principles to products and ensuring goods are made to last for many years, we can all do our bit to save the planet.
Amid the backdrop of growing economic and environmental uncertainty, the call from consumers is clear – sustainable, energyefficient products. As we look to next year, there are a number of stand-out trends customers will be investing in, one of which is products that aid hygiene.
Perhaps hastened by the pandemic, hygiene products such as the Geberit AquaClean are growing in popularity. The toilet, which offers cleaning with water rather than paper, boasts energy savings and a lower environmental impact while guaranteeing a more hygienic way to clean. Meanwhile, the GROHE Sensia Arena smart shower toilet takes hygiene to the next level. As well as providing water cleaning, it is also equipped with precise motion-activated sensors which prompt the lid to automatically open and close when you approach the toilet and when you move away from it. An optional automatic flush system makes it completely touch-free.
The hygiene credentials don’t stop there. Touchless activation flushing and taps, such as the GROHE BAU Cosmo E infra-red tap, remove the need for all points of contact. Water is only dispensed when the sensor is activated, meaning less water wastage and less chance of lingering germs.
Wall-hung toilets are another product that are anticipated to increase in popularity. A wall-hung toilet hides all technical components, where dirt can gather, behind a wall, which means easier and faster cleaning and less opportunity for dirt to accumulate.
The next few months may be a bumpy ride for businesses and consumers as the impact of the cost of living hits homes, but the long-term outlook remains positive, with many still planning to invest in high-ticket items like bathrooms. Whatever happens, Ideal will be there to support its customers wherever possible.
GROHE Sensia Shower ToiletDigital technology has continued to thrive since 2020 during the COVID 19 pandemic. The Ideal Bathrooms website, is updated on a daily basis to ensure we have the best product information available to you at the click of a button.
It’s so important to us, that you have as much information as possible to make an informed purchase. We have some fantastic new features coming later this year and early in 2023 so keep a look out for all of these!
New
The Geberit ONE bathroom series has been expanded, offering a wide range of options for designing bathrooms that impress both aesthetically and functionally.
Washbasins, bathroom furniture and mirror cabinets in various designs are perfectly coordinated with one another and can be combined to suit individual requirements.
The washbasin designs are fitted with a new, innovative, or classic space saving waste system. Washbasins with a classic waste have a ceramic cover and those with an innovative waste have a die cast zinc integrated comb insert which can be removed with ease to clean. The innovative waste has been tailored to the design of the washbasins and is cleverly positioned at the back edge of the bowl reducing water and limescale residue.
Thanks to space-saving technology, additional room is created in the upper drawer of the washbasin cabinet. The hidden overflow also allows the washbasin to be filled without the risk of water overflowing.
There are three new washbasin variants – a standard and slim washbasin in various sizes and a lay-on washbasin with two different designs. Geberit is thus expanding the product range of existing space-saving washbasins with a small projection of 40cm, adding washbasins for standard installation with a projection of 48cm. Another new feature is that the washbasins are now available with a classic waste. A major advantage of the innovative waste by Geberit is that its space-saving design means there is no longer any need for a trap recess. The middle of the drawer is therefore deeper, creating more storage space.
The new Geberit ONE washbasin cabinets and washtops have an impressive range of individual design options, allowing customers to plan the exact amount of storage space they require and create their dream bathroom. The cabinets are available in eight different colourways and finishes; including white matt or gloss, sand grey, griege and lava as well as two decors; oak and hickory wood textured melamine. The washbasin cabinets can be combined with various washtops to create the desired effect in any colour combination.
The Geberit ONE mirror cabinet is impressive thanks to its aesthetic and practical advantages and its barely visible projection, it disappears almost completely behind the wall and offers more freedom of movement at the washbasin giving the bathroom a spacious feel. The mirror cabinets are available in two versions, either with mirrored doors or with short doors which have an open, lit niche at the bottom, meaning regularly used items remain within easy reach even when the mirror doors are closed.
The Geberit ONE mirror cabinets with ComfortLight will give the perfect lighting at any time of the day: Standard light (bright and refreshing), Work light (fresh and clear), Candlelight (soft and flattering), Orientation light (discreet and calming). The simple operation via touch, switch or app makes it easy to find the ideal lighting to suit. For more information about the Geberit ONE range, visit idealbathrooms.com or call 0800 634 2600.

When it comes to product development, we are strongly guided by consumer trends. The demand for matt black and black brassware finishes has grown considerably over the past five years, and continues to gain momentum. Our easy-to-install bar valve black Merit shower is a practical, stylish and cost effective way to introduce the trend to consumers.
These days, consumers consider every detail of their bathroom design - from the furniture right down to the electrical fittings. With that in mind, we created new, on-trend flushing solutions that elevate this simple function & allow consumers to coordinate their brassware and create a cohesive bathroom look.
Rob Shean, Head of Product Development at Tavistock Bathrooms, chooses his favourite designs from the new collections. Micro Evo Fully Enclosed CC WC Aurora MirrorsA handy bathroom furniture guide from Roca to help you design the perfect bathroom.
The bathroom can be a tricky place to design. It’s one of the most heavily used areas in a house and often has to fulfil different roles –a playground for children to enjoy with brightly coloured toys, a relaxing space for adults to enjoy a long soak and a place to get ready for the day.
Creating a space that does all that is no mean feat, and bathroom experts are often expected to have all the answers. With a bit of thought, bathroom woes can be solved easily and effectively. To help, Natalie Bird, Brand Manager for Roca, has compiled a handy bathroom furniture guide…
If a customer has approached you about bathroom furniture, chances are they are looking to improve their current set-up. Help to identify the areas that cause angst and make suggestions based on what they tell you. This is often the best place to start and gives you an idea of their project’s scope and budget.
By understanding your customer’s pain points, you’ll be in a position to offer them a wide range of options to choose from.
For those looking to modernise the look of their bathroom, the timeless Mediterranean hues of the Roca Ona Collection are sure to appeal. With delicate shapes, high-quality brassware and eco credentials, the Ona collection is a beautiful bathroom upgrade.
For customers who desire more storage, vanity units with drawers offer more space for essential items like toiletries and toilet rolls without compromising on style.
And for those with trinkets to display, a storage unit with open shelves such as the Ona Delta column unit will allow just that.
Ona Vanity Unit 1 Drawer & Delta Column Unit in Matt White Ona Accessory Trays in Matt Green Ona Basin Mixer in Matt BlackWall-hung furniture has several advantages over traditional floorstanding options. For one, it keeps the floor clear and makes cleaning easier. More of the floor on show also makes a small bathroom appear bigger.
The Ona collection has several wall-hung options, giving customers plenty of choices when redesigning their bathroom. Where you position the basin on furniture can also provide additional useful space. For example, countertop or asymmetric basins allow for handy space to either side of the bowl, which can be used to display toiletries, or for accessories such as the Ona collection soap dispenser, tray or tumbler.
Bathroom showrooms and fitters know how important the details are. From finishes that stand the test of time to neutral shades that will never go out of fashion, the vanity unit is often at the centre of the design.
Brassware is also as important as the big-ticket items - it’s not only stylish but also offers potential energy savings for the homeowner. Ona’s on trend cylindrical design combined with Roca’s Cold Start Technology helps to reduce hot water consumption by only delivering cold when operating from the basin mixers traditional start position. Hot water is only delivered when the user actively turns the lever to call for it.
Investing in other innovative features such as the Supraglaze® coating on Roca’s ceramic basins and the exclusive Stonex® material on Roca baths will ensure the bathroom will still look beautiful in years to come.

In addition, Showerwall has also introduced new dedicated display stands for the laminate (including compact), and the acrylic collection, which began rolling out in showrooms earlier this year.

Ideal Standard Tesi Silk Black display in Pebbles Tile and Stone Ltd in Calveley, Cheshire Tavistock Cadence Wall Hung Basin Unit in Bath Flo in Harrow, London and handle optionsJaren Bathrooms is a family-run bathroom designer, supplier and installer based on the Isle of Wight. We spoke to showroom manager Reece Moore about the cost of living crisis and Jaren’s plans for the future.
Q. Your family business, Jaren Bathrooms, is celebrating its third anniversary this year, what was the inspiration behind the company launch?
My dad has been in the industry for a long time, having run a bathroom fitting business for over 20 years. As a family, we saw the potential of having a shop designing and supplying bathrooms and made it a reality three years ago.
Q. Tell us about your career journey in the bathroom world.
I used to work for my dad when I was younger but decided to become a chef after school. When we opened the business, I left cheffing and came to work here. With it being a family business, it was a no brainer for me – the hours are much better too!
Q. You offer a variety of displays and brands in your showroom. How does this vast array of choice help you to cater for all your customers’ needs?
As we are based on the Isle of Wight, we have a large and varied customer base. Having all the different choices means we nearly always have something for everyone.
Q. How does your partnership with Ideal help you meet these needs?
Ideal supplies a large array of different products and brands which is brilliant for our customers. The variety means we can cater for everyone and every budget.
Q. The cost of living crisis is hanging over the heads of many across the UK, how is Jaren Bathrooms aiming to help customers through this difficult time?
We truly believe in helping out our customers as much as possible. For us that means providing great aftercare service, replacing parts as soon as we can and buying in bulk so we can pass any savings onto our customers.
Q. The Covid pandemic has forced many businesses to adapt. In this post-pandemic world, how do you see Jaren Bathrooms evolving further?
We actually opened the business three weeks before the first lockdown, which was bad timing! That first year was tough, and we are fortunate to have grown since then. We streamline as much as possible now by only ordering in what we need and not carrying thousands of pounds worth of stock. Suppliers like Ideal help because the team can deliver stock really quickly which means we don’t have to have it sitting in our shop.
Left to right: Reece Moore (Showroom Manager), Karen Moore (Owner) and James Manuel (Area Sales Manager) Tavistock Calm BTW Unit, Three Drawer Floor Cupboard & Basin Unit in Mineral BlueQ. As we’re sure you’ll agree, having a strong digital presence is essential for any bathroom business to thrive. Do you have plans to enhance your showroom’s online profile further over the next year?
It’s definitely one part of it and we do use social media for advertising our products. However, as a small company on an island, face-to-face interactions are crucial to us. Most of our customers come to the showroom to see and discuss the products, so our focus is on the instore customer experience.
Q. We have worked together for two years – how has Ideal’s support helped your business to grow?
Our area sales manager James is fantastic – he is always available, and the Ideal team are great at sorting any questions and issues we have very quickly.
Q. What do you believe are the ingredients for a successful bathroom retail business?
Exceptional customer care, carrying a wide variety of products and being organised!
Q. What bathroom trends do you see making the industry headlines in 2023?
Coloured units – the past few years have been all about minimalistic white and grey. I think we’ll see more colours in the coming year. My money is on light blue units with brass detailing.
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you would give for running a successful showroom?
Customer care is crucial. If you don’t get on with your customers, they won’t buy from you. Aftersales care is also important. We aim to do all we can for our customers and always have them at the heart of what we do.
Q. Which is your favourite, bath or shower?
Bath – there’s nothing better than a long soak at the end of the week!
Q. How do you unwind after a hard day at work?
I enjoy spending time with my family, chilling out on the sofa or heading to the pub with friends.
Q. If you could visit any location in the world, where would you go and why?
Devon and Cornwall – the countryside there is just beautiful with some great walking routes.
Q. Do you have any exciting plans for Jaren Bathrooms you’d be willing to share with us?
We’ve got a fantastic virtual reality headset at our showroom where customers can literally see our products in their bathrooms – it’s a brilliant way to visualise a new bathroom design.
Essential expand their portfolio with a new affordable range comprising of 6 products, available in 3 subtle, yet striking colours.
We are proud to extend our collection of Bayswater products with the NEW Victrion range, a capsule collection of classically inspired looks.
The World Cup 2022 is being help in Qatar this year and kicks off on 20th November. Let’s bring the nation together and support England and Wales.
We are still experiencing a rise in energy prices and resources. With the drop in value of the £1 and rise in mortgage rates, we are all struggling. What effect will this have on our industry is still to be seen,
Q. Congratulations on your new role as MD of Roca! How does it feel to be stepping into the shoes of Alan Dodds as MD after 15 years as UK Finance and Service Director for Roca?
Thank you very much! I have always been heavily involved in all areas of the company so am confident that the change has and will continue to be seamless. As such, to describe the impact of my new role, I have used the phrase ‘evolutionary rather than revolutionary’.
Q. You’ve led a very successful career in the bathroom world driving the strategic direction of Roca, and overseeing the company’s finance, customer service and warehouse operations; how has the industry changed over the years in your eyes?
Roca Group now has a large market share and our ability to meet changing retail and consumer needs has been a huge help in achieving this. Some of the key changes are reflected in our exciting new collections that address consumer interest in hygiene, sustainability, and affordability without sacrificing good looks.
Q. Who have been the biggest influences in your career?
Several people have influenced my career, but none more so than former MD, Alan Dodds. Working with him for over 15 years has been hugely beneficial to me, and a fantastic learning curve. Alan allowed a great deal of autonomy, with just the right level of advice when needed.
Once I have my first coffee, I check emails on my phone, followed by Teams calls with my leadership teams, then maybe a customer call, and there are some calls with my European colleagues too. Before you know it, the day is over and it feels like all I’ve done is video meetings!
Q. We can imagine you’ve had many career highlights over the years, but which would you say is your favourite?
I am most proud of Roca’s stellar growth, which has been the making of many successful careers.
Q. Roca recently launched its new high-performance collection, Ona, which is inspired by the Mediterranean. Tell us more about the key features of the range and why you believe it will be popular with consumers.
Ona is a complete bathroom collection comprising of sanitaryware, brassware, furniture and accessories in a Mediterranean-inspired finish. All the pieces in the collection speak the same design language, to create a bathroom that has a coordinated look.
Q. You’ve incorporated several different innovations into the Ona collection, such as Fineceramic® and Stonex® materials, the Everlux finish, and Supraglaze® coating. Why is bath tech important to Roca?
It is important that our products are innovative and feature new technologies to improve the homeowner’s experience, as well as be kinder to the environment. As a group, all our brands are fully committed to manufacturing products that will stand the test of time. For instance, brassware with a quality finish – which doesn’t age or develop a patina – can only be good for the environment because consumers keep their brassware for longer, therefore reducing wastage.
Q. You recently developed a new retail strategy. Can you briefly tell us what this entails and how you hope the new strategy will benefit retailers, and their customers?
We understand the power of having our products on display, which is why we have developed our new Roca Retail Showroom programme. The retail strategy is designed to support all our loyal customers to ensure that we remain a desirable brand.
Q. The cost-of-living crisis is going to impact many across the UK. What would your advice be to retailers to support their customers?
Retailers should ensure that their customers buy the right product so they get value for their purchase – obviously I would say that this should be our brands! But for the reasons I’ve outlined above, our products offer a quality and longevity that many others don’t, particularly cheaper products that quickly need replacing.
We are all concerned about the economic outlook for 2023. However, this year we’ve made significant investments in new ranges like Ona, the expansion of our BDM sales team with a focus on specialists in their respective field, and a new retail strategy. I’m confident that we’ll start to see the benefits of these in 2023, resulting in another rewarding year.
Looking forward, we have further very exciting new product development in the pipeline that we will be showing at ISH 2023. We are also continuing to reduce our water consumption in manufacturing and the Roca Group aims to reach water neutrality within five years.
Q. If you were shipwrecked on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you?
A Star Trek holodeck, a food replicator and – of course – Arsenal FC!
In this edition we caught up with the new Managing Director of Roca UK & Ireland, Rashpal Sidhu, to hear all about his career, thoughts on the cost of living crisis and Roca’s plans for next year.
