PROUD HISTORY, PROUD FUTURE by DJ Smith The histories of Arkport Cycles and Harley-Davidson both share humble beginnings. While William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson started their business in a shed, John and Rose Jamison, started out working from the household garage.

And mushroom it did, helped by the addition of Harley-Davidson in 1975-76 and eventually the franchises of Honda, Yamaha, and Kymco, which along with Arctic Cat, “makes us a good size dealer in Upstate New York,” said Jenny Swarts, John and Rose’s daughter, who is now the general manager. Carrying all types of motorcycles, scooters, as well as sport and utility ATVs, side-by-side UTVs, and snowmobiles gives them a leg up on many competitors for year round sales.

In his early 30s, John’s doctor told him that because of the concrete dust in his lungs he wouldn’t live past 40 if he kept working construction. “I decided that maybe I should do something else,” John explained. “So we started selling snowmobiles originally.”

The three credited several reasons for their success in the highly competitive business of selling predominantly recreational vehicles, especially in today’s economic climate.

It wasn’t long before he built the original building at 1 Main Street in Arkport – while in a body cast from a snowmobile accident Rose added – and Suzuki became their first motorcycle franchise. “It was a one horse operation originally – I was everything,” he said, and even though it wasn’t too long before Rose started working fulltime at the shop, work like a horse he did. His mandatory first order from Suzuki was 72 bikes, which caused him some concern for the fledgling business.

“We’ve always been strong at selling products that I think are quality products – I don’t like junk,’ said John, with Rose adding that their service department is another point of pride for them. The continued training of their technicians has garnered them 25 Super Service Awards from Suzuki, one of only two in the nation to do so. Yamaha has also given them top honors for several consecutive years as well. When it comes to Harley-Davidson service, having head of service Andy Thistle, with his extensive knowledge of H-D bikes, around for almost 20 years is a real plus for the line. Bikers come from far flung areas to have exacting dyno work done by Andy and his team.

“It scared me, I thought ‘Oh my God, I’ll never sell the things,’” he said, adding with a laugh. “But then, we were out of bikes – we had to order more … it took off good right from the start, mostly dirt bikes. We sold hundreds and hundreds of 185s and 250s and it just mushroomed after that.”

If it is parts or motor clothes you are in need of, one look at these departments will make any Harley owner 6

feel at home. With inspiration from Jenny, who started working part time in high school and while attending college before she started fulltime in 1990, Arkport Cycles can boast to having almost anything one could wish for. John said he remembered when Jenny asked him for $100,000 for accessories, telling her, “I thought you were nuts.” But Jenny said the gamble to expand the shop in that direction paid off considering that it was in the early 90s that Harley sales were really taking off. But mostly, it is the feeling of family that pervades Arkport Cycles that set them apart from many. All three encourage a workplace that contributes to this feel for their employees and more so their customers. John is an old school “my John and Rose Jamison and daughter Jenny Swarts stand before most of the hard workers of Arkport Cycles (missing from the photo are Andy Thistle, Corky and Derrick). word is my bond” handshake means the deal is done. Rose and Jenny are cut from the same cloth, so it is no surprise that this generational business (Jenny’s teenage kids help out now and then) has generational customers. “They were our customers when they were kids and now they are coming back because their kids are getting into it and they want to get back into it because their kids are. It’s kind of nice to see that,” Rose said with a laugh. As with many motorcycle dealerships with a strong tie to the community, Arkport continues that family feel with many a bike run starting from or stopping there for the hundreds who participate. They also donate

bikes to several raffles throughout the year for worthy causes. With Jenny and Rose (who stills works full-time in the office) holding down the fort, John is busy renovating an older warehouse into the new location for Arkport Cycles. Doing much of the work himself with a solid crew of friends, the new building will be ready in about a year and allow the shop, which now uses several buildings, to be under one roof of about 45,000 square feet. It is just down the road and will feature the trademark stone and old barn exterior of the existing buildings and the eagle perched on the roof will relocate. “We’ve always been fortunate because we do have good customers and the residents of Arkport have been so supportive,” she said. “Somebody said to me lately, “I just don’t know what I’m going to do when the eagle leaves Arkport.’ But we’re still going to be Arkport Cycles.”

the move.

There was one thing Jenny wanted to make clear about

“It’s not Harley making us do it. You know, my Dad and I are kind of the same mentality –we’re not complacent for very long. I think it was a joint thing for both of us,” Jenny explained. “We thought about that building at the same time and both thought it was crazy, but the more we thought about it the more we thought it wasn’t crazy for the location, because of the ease of being under one roof.” “Yes we added on, we started here and it’s a great place, but I’m now looking to the future, what technology is going to do, what customer expectations are going to be … you do need to change to stay up with the pace of the business.” 7

Rockin’ Roadhouse’s – 2nd Annual Biker Blow Out could not be hindered by the severe weather in the forecast! The day started out with a morning photo shoot inside Pooley’s House (Rockin’ Roadhouse) with bikes built by Bjorn Viking Choppers and Heritage Cycles. Then it was off to the races with vendors and bikers pulling in to get the event going! The other vendors and bike builders included: Strip Club Choppers, Gearhead Cycles, Breast Cancer Killers of New York, Heading Due North as well as photographers from SPXNY Ultimatte Photography. You can check out their work in the next couple issues of “Your Magazine”. Split Rail came and got the event rocking! Then the storms hit and the winds blew! Everyone gathered under the tents and inside. Just a slight adjustment with the band setting up inside and the crowd rocked on. The rain came down hard, but only for a short time and everything subsided. The outside patio filled when bikers pulled on the Fast Lane Burnout Pit! The winds calmed and the smoked filled the air when several bikers twisted their throttles and threw some rubber. Luke, and son Ryan had a little competition amongst themselves, but you’ll have to ask them who won. They are also the Photo of the Month! I The last guy smoked his tire so much, that the Roadhouse disappeared! We even had a burnout on the back of a trailer! Check out the pics! As the event pressed on, so did the music with Workin’ Slobs and Pappa Cherry! Awesome! Thanks Pooley for another great event. Check out the T-shirt design below. He still has more!

Great time today. The Blackthorne Staff were very accommodating!! Sunday was a beautiful day for a ride, and what better place to go then the 15th Annual Catskill Mountain Thunder which was held at the Blackthorne Resort in East Durham, New York. The air was crisp and clean up in the Catskills. We arrived to find a sea of leather and chrome. Positive vibes abounded as old friends got together and new ones were made. Campers were lined up with people grilling and just hanging out around the perimeter of the resort. All kinds of bikes were on display with every kind of modification and paint job imaginable. An old bearded man strummed a guitar and played some Johnny Cash. Globe of Death, Shovel Head, and The Outlaws rocked the rally throughout the entire weekend. There was something for everyone. Burnout pits, biker games, and Harley Davidson Demo Rides care of Woodstock Harley Davidson. They even had a pig roast to end the weekend right. If you were looking for vendors, there was something for everyone. Looking for vintage parts or custom paint? No problem. There were lots of patches, stickers, handmade jewelry, antiques, and biker apparel. There were even seamstresses at the ready to sew on your newly purchased patches. The hum of the tattoo guns filled the air with beautiful tattooed bodies walking around. If customs bikes are your thing, the Catskill Mountain Thunder Rally did not let you down. There were plenty of custom builders on hand including: AMS Scott Porges, Bristol County Choppers, Chaos Cycles, Cyclone Cycles, Dan Henke, Dave Davies, Flat Out Vintage Motor Bike, Gravesend Cycles, Joe Roy Customs, New England Choppers, Old School Choppers, Pitoniak's Custom Cycles, PT Customs, Tribal Iron Choppers, and Wayne County Choppers were all there and all dazzled the event. ...continued

Patch McGillicuttey was there with the Wall of Death Stunt Show. He was simply amazing. The crowd was stirred into a frenzy with every loud pass of his 1000cc Harley. "HELL YEAH" the crowd roared after every stunt and the excitement was infectious. The dirt bike stunts got going and were also incredible. The kids were in awe watching one insane trick after another: superman seat grabbers, no hander landers, wheelies, and endos, to name a few. One jump after another they wowed the audience with their skills and fearlessness. After all that excitement, when it was time for a break, there was plenty of food on hand to satisfy. Whether we got thirsty for a cold one on draught or a fresh squeezed lemonade, our thirsts were quenched. Damn....I love the drama!!!

Using the Right Hand. As a student of my hobbies, I read as much as possible about them. Since my return to two-wheeled travel a decade ago, I have not found anything in print about proper hand position and usage on the throttle/brake lever. So, allow me to offer up what I have learned over the years on how best to use your right hand for proper throttle control and brake lever application.

articulated; your front brake lever is your best friend or worst enemy at any given moment. Treat it like the former. Eliminate the “death grip”.

The focus of this two-part article is the distinct functions that require the use of your right hand. It makes sense to allow certain of your five fingers to perform the work for each of these functions. Proper hand position is also a key element that I will cover.

A third consideration is the in-ability to properly roll-off the throttle prior to brake application. Think about the need to stop for real. You will be under emotional stress during extreme braking. Most humans perform better without the presence of loud, obnoxious sounds (like that of a motorcycle roar). Removing the loud RPM sound from the equation of high stress and emergency braking will help your composure. Additionally, if during an extreme stop with your throttle rolled-on, you in-advertently release your clutch lever, there is risk of losing control of your motorcycle. Under all circumstances, you must always maintain control of your vehicle. During high stress scenarios, your cognitive abilities may not be able to process all the data at the speed which the action is taking place. Sensory over-load might cause your mind to be pre-occupied, which in turn might cause you to omit an important action, such as keeping your clutch lever retracted. If you are going to release your clutch in-advertently, do so when fuel is not going to the motor.

PART 1 We begin with throttle roll-on/roll-off. The primary movers for that action are the thumb and index finger. Maintain throttle control and activation using primarily these two fingers. Position your hand such that all five fingers are making contact with and wrapped around the grip, and the thumb/index finger are not in contact with the control housing. The remaining three fingers (middle, ring, and small) are placed over the throttle but do little, if any, real work. Throttle accelerating/decelerating functions are best accomplished if these remaining fingers are relaxed. They are along for the ride, but not doing much else when throttle usage is the goal. There is good rationale for this. Many times, new riders use a “death grip” on their throttle; clasping it with all five fingers as if it were their worst enemy. This creates several safety issues during brake usage. First, it is anatomically difficult to correctly and fully extend the four fingers needed for proper brake lever activation when those fingers are preoccupied firmly griping the throttle. Second and specific to braking under extreme circumstances (emergency stopping), the lack of relaxation in the remaining three fingers creates a tendency to grab the brake lever as opposed to a gentle progression or pressure on it.

In Part 2 of this article, I will address additional concerns regarding front brake application. Ride safe. Always.

Cool Fool

When customizing your motorcycle, are you a look good, ride good person or a cool fool? When you do your bike up you have to think about a few things. Can you ride with ape hangers, pull backs or drag bars? If you’re tall good, but if you’re a little bit on the shorter side, ape hangers may not be within your reach. It will have an effect on how you feel riding and also with your handling. If you put a smaller tank on your bike you’re going to have to stop more often for fill ups. If you go with an air cleaner or carb that sticks way out, you will have to see how your leg fits around it. Will you be able to comfortably reach your forward controls? And speaking of the forward controls, are they set where they are comfortable for you to ride? Exhaust is something you want to consider too. If it is too loud you will not only piss off neighbors but give the police someone to talk to. Also, if they’re too loud, it can give you a headache. If you don’t have the right seat, your butt will make sure you’re aware of it! Some people like the cut off rear fender and/or no front fender look. This in wet weather will give you or your passenger a racing stripe right up their back. You can also customize your ride so much that you may not want to ride it. It becomes a hassle instead of fun. The best thing is to find a bike that is customized like you want yours to be. Ask to sit on it to get a feel of it and if you can, see if you can ride it to compare handling. We all have that friend that looks like they’re fighting the bike all the time. Most bikes that are set up right, you’ll have very little effort to drive it and you’ll enjoy the ride. We all want a nice bike, but don’t give up what you like about riding. P.S. Upcoming... We are going to put together a question and answers tech tip to try to answer your questions. SEEBER’S TAVERN SEEBER’S TAVERN in Smithville Flats, NY had an outstanding event with their August Summer Social/ Pig Roast. Fast Lane Biker arrived around 1130am and set up along with TNT Pro LLC, Under the Gun Tattoo, and BCK (Breast Cancer Killers), to meet the crowd and enjoy the event. Music by “String of Pearls rocked the crowd from 1-5pm playing all the crowd favorites as they enjoyed the excellent pig roast and gathered like a family at a reunion. The biker family has no end, it just get bigger! Bikers rolled in and filled the parking areas all around the tavern, to include across the street. A group of riders from a local MC, called the Freebirds, brought in a few of them. Great group of riders! Although no burnout pit was available, some of them made it seem like there was one. The crowd loved it! They seemed to work as a focused group with one thing in mind. Get the guy leaving, to burnout! It worked. Out in back were the vendors and a few games. I had my try at the Dunking Booth a couple times. Of course, I had to dunk the one and only, Janice Fiene, owner/creator of the Summer Social/Pig Roast. It took a couple throws, but I got her!!! As the afternoon progressed, the Bike Contest began. This was provided by TJ from TNT Pro LLC! First through third were selected and they pulled their rides on the back lawn for everyone to see!. Now it was time for “Bad Influence”. Another outstanding band. They set up inside the tavern and got the crowd dancing and moving to the music. The party rocked on into the night! Fast Lane Biker – New York would like to thank Janice and the Seeber’s staff for a great event, with a special thanks to RaRa. Looking forward to stopping by a few by Brian Gage more times the summer.
