THE ONLY CLOUD THAT SPEEDS UP YOUR ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Introduction
Smart Grids are the result of the merging between power and communications networks, aiming to more efficient, reliable and resilient power grids. Smart Grids require strong integration of embedded computing, communication and applications. Recently attention has been focused on communication infrastructures which are not uniform and can no longer be treated as distinct application-specific elements or systems.
Transition from traditional Power Grids to Smart Grids is driven by many factors including: • • • • •
Utility operating cost reduction Grid reliability and Cyber Security Energy Management for efficiency Renewable integration and Distributed Energy Management Demand Response programs to allow congestion relief
Major Utilities and Energy Operators objectives include: • Ways to measure the behavior of the grid in real time • Ways to use information to control the power flow fast enough to avoid blackouts • Ways to upgrade their networks in order to integrate micro-grids (renewable) through the grid safely • Ways to produce and store power close to consumers in order to reduce the load over aged transmission lines in the first place
Broadband cloud is the foundation supporting necessary data flows and new applications are needed to support above objectives.

SMART ENERGY cloud services
Digitaria International has developed smart energy, a set of cloud-based services dedicated to support Energy Management Systems for Utilities and Energy Operators. Services collect data from the field and feed smart applications ranging from process control to information management and analytics suitable for Smart Grids applications. Fully interoperable with any communication infrastructure, the platform is built on latest state-of-the-art technologies: • Virtualization Infrastructure • Application Server platform • Database Server Infrastructure • A (virtually) unlimited number of remote data sources (POAs) based on Smart Nodes Based on IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and DaaS (Data as a Service) models, this platform enables the implementations of the next generation EMS (Energy Management Systems), supporting all applications on a common, multi-service IP-based infrastructure and making possible data sharing across the same applications.
Smart nodes smart energy services provide scalability up to real or close-to realtime data-processing applications by means of Smart Nodes. Acting as small, RTU independent, autonomous systems, Smart Nodes collect data from the field performing real or near-real time operations by means of embedded modular software plug-ins. Smart nodes can be easily integrated in existing network infrastructures (X-DSL, Leased line, Wireless and Satellite) in order to implement onsite reactive or pro-active automated analytics, concentrate measures databases, act as loggers or data historians (sensors, meters, generators, field devices data, etc.). Updatable via unicast or multicast protocols, these devices perform data pre-processing and local optimization for the communication layer and allow a full remote control from Control Centers.
REMS REMS (Renewable Energy Management System) is an instance based on smart energy DaaS model, dedicated to Renewable Energy Resources. Born to face the unpredictability of renewable-based power grids, REMS allows Utilities complete control over the process of integrating power plants in large scale networks, acquiring both production data and weather related data from the field. Cross integrated data are the foundation for powerful production forecast systems allowing Power Demand/Response programs and support to energy market management. Features include: • Visualization, filtering and integrated Process, Asset and Network Maintenance Management • Remote control • Automatic control • Report generation • Mobility support
