PUBLI SH ER’ S le t t er

WELCOME

W

elcome to the 2013 Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week® (CFW), and for those of you from out of town, welcome to Charleston! It has been quite a year for both Charleston and CFW. The city has continued to garner international recognition—from being selected as Condé Nast Traveler’s “Top City in the World” to being voted “Second Best-Dressed City” by Travel + Leisure to hosting the 2012 PGA Golf Championship, as well as expanded Spoleto, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, and Charleston Wine + Food festivals. We live in a special place, and a particular congratulations goes to Helen Hill and her team at the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau for their work. Regarding CFW, we are now in our seventh year and continue to grow the event to highlight Charleston’s fashion community and become a pathway to New York for aspiring talent across the East Coast. We are proud of the success stories—designers and models who have passed through CFW onto bigger things in the fashion world. In addition, if we can judge CFW by the caliber of the featured designers and industry leaders attending this year (see page 14 in this program), we have had a fantastic year. We are thrilled to have these fashion stars at CFW 2013. As you can imagine, it takes a host of people and talents to put on a show like this. CFW started with a conversation between myself and our style director, Ayoka Lucas, eight years ago, and it has grown to become something very special. On the opposing page are 16 people key to this enormous event—all are amazingly talented and hard-working. Another beauty of living in Charleston is the caliber of people who live right here, and this is nearly a 100% Charlestonbased effort! Thank you to all of these leaders and their teams. Finally, I want to thank our sponsors, that make this all possible. Starting with Baker Motor Company as title sponsor, which we view as a perfect fit in terms of quality and cutting-edge design; Belk; smartwater; BenefitFocus; and the many, many more—thank you. Please look through this program and our website for the full list of sponsors and use their products and services. And a special thanks goes to our charity partners, MUSC Children’s Hospital and Darkness to Light, and the wonderful work they do in the community. Last but not least, have a great time and strut your stuff! Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not going to win a fashion contest, but most of you in the audience certainly could.

fashion week® 2013

C

harleston Fashion Week is turning into Charleston Fashion Month— at least at the Art Institute of Charleston (Ai). To celebrate the launch of its Fashion Design program in January, the school has a month’s worth of sartorial events planned. On March 1, Ai hosts a runway show featuring Project Runway’s Rafael Cox along with CFW alums Ashley Reid, Vatrika Vikram, and Julie Wheat. Then, on March 5, the national exhibition of the annual Cool vs. Cruel competition’s winning designs will be on display. The fur-free campaign of the Art Institute and the Humane Society includes a faux fur over black chiffon creation by Evelyn Thompson (pictured above), an Ai Charleston student who won second place last fall. As CFW ramps up, Ai will be under the tents in full force. On opening night, Thompson and her winning dress will be at the Ai booth in the Style Lounge, and the school’s new president, Newton Myvett, will hit the runway Wednesday to welcome the crowd.

Throughout the week, Style Lounge-goers can visit the Ai booth to learn more about the Fashion Design program, which aims to enroll 200 students within a year, as well as the Fashion and Retail Management program. “We believe it’s important to nurture the significant talent in town,” says Myvett. “Ai Charleston is proud to become a leading educator in fashion in Charleston and the surrounding area.” Finally, for Saturday night’s after-party, Ai students will create a runway show incorporating recycled materials into sexy headdresses and body pieces. Sounds like a spicy end to a hot month of local fashion! For more info, visit artinstitutes.edu/charleston.

T

he nights of CFW may be the realm of ready-to-wear, but Saturday is ruled by fine white gowns. This year’s Charleston Weddings Magazine Spring Bridal Show, presented by Gathering Floral + Event Design on March 23, welcomes featured designer Anne Barge, a luminary in the wedding world since the ’90s, when her first boutique was acquired by Kleinfeld Bridal. From there, she became a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue bridal salons; served as managing director of London’s Virgin Bride; signed on as the licensee for Badgley Mischka; and most recently launched The Anne Barge Collection. Her work has been lauded in The New York Times, Brides, and Martha Stewart Weddings, among others. Joining Barge under the tents is another bridal favorite, Modern Trousseau’s Callie Tein, who promises to debut several 2014 looks and a handful of Charlestonexclusive designs. The show, now in its sixth year, is always the first of CFW events to sell out. Tickets are $45 for general admission and $55 for firstand second-row seats. On Her Fall 2013 Collection: uring my recent travels to the U.K., it became evident that the post-9/11 United States possesses a stronger sense of tension among cultures than other parts of the world. Inspired to create a collection derived from this anxiety, my designs merge the elegant drapes found in Middle Eastern clothing with sculptural shapes seen in historical knights’ armor. Juxtaposing the delicate and brave, quiet and bold, hard and soft through a variety of leathers, jersey knits, silk crepes, linens, and georgettes, I unveil how the misunderstood hide behind a wall of protection.

“When combined, my designs comprise an interesting runway look; when dissected, they become individual wearable pieces.”

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: y love of lingerie can be seen in my fall collection, which is feminine but not girly. Using silk double georgette, leather, Alençon lace, cotton tulle, wool crepe, and silk taffeta, I create pieces for powerful and competitive businesswomen who are not afraid to be sexy in the office or after hours. I want to bring sex back into a woman’s wardrobe in an unapologetic way.

&

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: want to bring back the emotion, talent, and beauty that is lacking in fashion right now, so this collection began as retaliation against digital prints and loud colors. With the magnolia blossom as inspiration, I cut all-white garments to mimic the petal shape and allowed texture to dictate my fabrics, which include cashmere coating, six-ply silk crepe, hemp, silk charmeuse, and bamboo rayon fleece. Turning the collection into a canvas, I bring each garment to life with hand painting and beading.

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: hrough a broadening of materials, my collection presents the possibilities that Korean designs can contribute to the originality and identity of a culture. Guided by elements of Korean tradition— specifically its architectural lattice patterns, ink and wash paintings, and roof tiles—I focus on the details of a garment, laser-cutting leather, quilting wool, and handpainting silk using a classic brush touch technique. The simple and clean silhouettes also recall the styles of the 1960s with straight H-line forms.

On Their Fall 2013 Collection: rawn to photographs of child laborers, with their oversized wool jackets and tattered looks, we gathered inspiration from the Industrial Revolution’s working class. Our designs clean up and modernize the image of the blue-collar factory worker, lending a menswear twist to the modern woman’s style. To give the collection an industrial edge laced with the rustic charm of the period, we selected warm wools, lightweight chambrays, soft silks, and airy cotton voiles.

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: ach of my dresses tells a story, emotionally connecting the wearer. Simple shapes bring out the female form, and staining, over-dyeing, and distressing enriches the luxurious fabrics. The pieces in this collection—inspired by the physicality of color to background—capture a moment, a brushstroke, or a splash that can never be repeated in exactly the same way. Expect a Rothko, a de Kooning, a Kline. The concept is dictated by the drama on the canvas, its rectangular shape and minimal structure, its passage between creator and collector.

I’m also planning a custom print using mapped images of my favorite areas in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Florida Everglades.

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: am very much attracted to shapes, and most of my inspiration comes from architectural pieces. For this collection, I looked to architect Zaha Hadid’s Kartal Pendik Masterplan, a vision for a new urban center in Istanbul that includes a three-dimensional organic grid structure. My designs, which look avant-garde, represent the harmonization of shapes from her presentation. Expect lots of French seaming, bold patterns, and neutrals.

On His Fall 2013 Collection: believe the menswear of the 18th and 19th centuries presented a gentleman at his best, and I intend to modernize that period’s styles through cut, construction, and attention to fine detail. Inspired by Ghanian-born British designer Ozwald Boateng’s use of color and refined cuts, I’ve been tailoring apparel since I was in my early teens in West Africa, de-constructing and re-styling garments to set my look apart.

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: fter living, working, and traveling around Europe and South Asia, I decided to be my own muse and create sleek separates that truly represent who I am as a person and a designer. The resulting collection, “Culture Club,” honors my African and American heritage with a unique blend of mix-and-match patterns, classic tailoring, and contemporary silhouettes. In addition to beautiful Dutch wax and African prints, latticed overlays bring texture and dimension to the designs. I always aim to strike a balance between playful and sophisticated without sacrificing commercial appeal to provide women with bold statement pieces that mix well with their wardrobe.

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: s a recent transplant to New York, I am hyper aware of the constant evolution of the city’s space according to time, weather, social events, elevation (first floor versus 26th), and unexpected pockets of nature. Even more complex is how people function, interact, and dress in the changing space. I ask: How will urban space look 100 years from now? How do people fit in that space? Fusing urban space with the future, my collection manipulates neoprene to act like other fabrics through pleating, fringing, and cutouts. The geometric silhouettes and colorblocked shapes have an aerodynamic, sporty feel that achieve something otherworldly.

On Her Fall 2013 Collection: elieving you can never be too old to play dress up, I resurrect the eccentric style that emerges from the practice. My pieces mimic the textures found in a little girl’s sartorial arsenal and offer a nearly schizophrenic array of styles. Classic silhouettes reminiscent of the 1950s and ’60s can be seen in brocade suits with sharply tailored jackets and cigarette pants, pencil skirts with lace-collared crepe de chine blouses, and box peplum cocktail dresses. The sharp lines of the garments are then met with tousled tulle tutus, French lace, and netting to bring dramatic volume and contrast.

ince sweeping the 2012 CFW Emerging Designer Competition with a colorfully complex showcase influenced by the progressive homemaker, Hannah Goff has sculpted her namesake women’s line into a bold and textural collection worthy of media attention from Fashionista.com, ELLE, NYLON, and Southern Living. And with its collage of shades and textures inspired by humans’ impact on the environment, her Fall 2013 show promises to be another standout display of quirky, print-centric pieces for the modern, young female. A master of fabric manipulation, Goff allows her original prints and unique materials to guide her clean but highly geometric silhouettes. “I want to empower women to feel good about themselves while wearing vibrant and intriguing pieces of art,” she says. “K

ids’ clothing can be equally amazing as adults’,” say the clever creatives behind the functional-yet-fashionable small-fry line neve / hawk. As mom and dad to two inspiring tots, design duo Kris and Bob Galmarini understand what parents really care about in their little ones’ wearables: durable duds that are comfortable, washable, imaginative, and fun. And their artistic line nurtures whimsy and funky through bustles, ties, illustrated patches, and screen-prints. The newest addition to the family this season? Fabrics custom-designed from Bob’s illustrations. “This opens up a whole new creative outlet for us,” says Kris.

“Our design process is still incredibly organic and collaborative. From inception to the finished garment, we are constantly building on each other’s ideas.” —Kris Galmarini

Meet Kris & Bob: Our proudest moment in the fashion business has been surviving. The craziest moment has been spotting a random child thousands of miles away from Charleston in our clothes. Our inspiration wall is blank at the moment—what does that say? Our studio space is separate from our home now, thank the Lord!

ohnson Hartig, the avant-garde wit behind the aptly named ready-to-wear line Libertine, reaps inspiration from “everywhere, a thousand times a day.” Revamping vintage castoffs into contemporary, one-ofa-kind clothing, this sartorial artist fuses a fun and freethinking spirit into classic styles, blurring the line between sophisticated and edgy. Fueled by curiosities he’s encountered on international travels, especially India’s “dedication to overt decoration on everything,” the Los Angeles-based designer developed an audacious collection for the Fall 2013 runway. Expect party pieces rife with adornment, a vibrant palette, and exhilarating combinations of texture and print.

MEET Johnson:

I get inspiration everywhere, a thousand times a day, from botanical gardens to punk rock to Varanasi, India, to a leaf on the ground. When I am not working on a collection, I enjoy interior decoration and architecture, and traveling the world looking at the finest examples of each.

“E

ach of my collections celebrates women with feminine fantasy, drama, tailoring, and couture techniques,” says Project Runway prodigy-turned-top New York designer Christian Siriano, whose creative process always begins with a dream or fantasy. Inspired by the whimsical movement of the ballet, his Spring 2013 collection takes cues from the American Ballet Theatre production The Dream (adapted from A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Edgar Degas’ painting Three Ballet Dancers. Reminiscent of the colorful layered-tulle costumes presented in each work, his newest pieces make light of soft brocades, polka-dotted cottons, watercolor silks, pearls, and metallic linens. “I wanted this collection to feel as light, soft, and romantic as the dancers on the stage and in the painting but modern enough to be wearable for today’s elegant woman,” he says.

FEATURED DESIGNER

Meet Christian: My favorite fabric to work with is silk brocade, because I love the texture and shape that it provides. When I work, I listen to Pandora radio. My favorite stations are Ellie Goulding, Kate Nash, Rihanna, Brad Walsh, The Beautiful Bodies, and Katy Perry. My inspiration wall is filled with images of Degas paintings and ballet dancers, beading, colored tulle, watercolor prints, and ribbons. When I am not working on a collection, I enjoy playing with interior design.

“W

ith every collection, I explore the youth archetype while building the fundamentals of a man’s wardrobe. The result is continental in flavor with a poetic and contemplative edge,” says Montreal native Antonio Azzuolo, who indeed knows international appeal. After refining his design aesthetic and craftsmanship skills with luxury labels in Milan and Paris, this custom finery connoisseur moved to New York in 2000 and launched his a.a. antonio azzuolo label in 2008. His Spring/Summer 2013 showcase follows suit, venturing into new territory where sartorial meets sport. For this show, Azzuolo pairs his hand-tailored collection with shoes from Charleston’s Sneaker boutique, translating New York street style through a refined lens while incorporating an unexpected whimsy.

Meet Antonio: I hope to bring a new and fresh perspective to the menswear design community and an appreciation of a hands-on craft that is slowly disappearing.

The Contest Twenty local bartenders were invited to take on Ben Arnold Beverage Company’s CFW challenge: create a drink based on either Grey Goose vodka or Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey to complement the five nights of fashion in Marion Square. After an online vote by fans and fashionistas at charlestonfashionweek.com last winter, seven contenders moved on to the main event, a live competition at Mercury Lounge on Upper King Street. While thirsty partygoers enjoyed sipping the drinks, our panel of judges sampled each, scoring them according to originality, taste, and presentation. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey Winner: “Honey Hole” by Jackson Holland, Cocktail Club ith warming thoughts of whiskey and apple flavors for the cooler months, Cocktail Club general manager Jackson Holland created an elevated take on hot apple cider. He paired Jack Daniel’s smooth and sweet Tennessee Honey with his own easy-to-make appleginger reduction of fresh apples; ginger “for a little spicy heat,” he says; and red tea, “which adds herbal and earthy notes.” And though this CFW creation is meant to be served on the rocks, Jackson says he has served it warm on the occasional “cold” night in Charleston, keeping it at the ready in a crock pot as it fills the bar with a delicious aroma.

Grey Goose Winner: “Frankly Speaking” by Sarah Martin, Fish Restaurant raving a sassy, refreshing sip? Look no further than this “sweet-tart” of a drink—named in honor of the late Grey Goose vodka creator, Sidney Frank. Its secret ingredient? The sweet yet tart tamarind nectar. “I'm in love with tamarind,” says Fish bartender Sarah Martin. “It makes for a great aperitif because its complex flavor gets your taste buds going.” As for her smartly branded —not to mention wonderfully aromatic— garnish, she used orange peel for “a little citrus on the nose” and punched the letters C-F-W into a fragrant Kaffir lime leaf.
