Bill Gardner, president of Gardner Design (USA)

David joined Pentagram as a partner in 1978 where he has continued to produce award winning work across several disciplines, from corporate identity and editorial design to signage and packaging. He has won numerous design awards including several prestigious gold and silver awards from D&AD, and the Newspaper Design Awards, the International Editorial Design Competition, the Sign Design Awards, and and Food and Beverage Awards (FAB). He has served on the juries of several major international competitions. He is a Royal Designer for Industry, a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (and was elected International President in 2001), and a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art.

Prof. Michael Gais, founder and creative director of QWER (Germany) Since 1998 Michael was engaged in developing visual and communicative design in wellJknown design and advertising agencies in London, Helsinki and Turku. Till 1994 he was included in “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Loesch”. Together with Iris Utikal he established consulting agency on communicative design QWER. Among QWER’s projects are: Expo 2000 in Hannover, Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet, Leipzig 2012, Zanders Feinpapiere AG, Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg. Gary Horton, senior designer of Attik (UK) Before joining Attik Gary worked for such English and Scottish companies as The Partners, Revolver and also collaborated with Attik offices in London and Leeds. Present day Gary fills the position of senior designer in Attik. Gary worked on projects for such clients as: AOL, Nokia, EA Games, Toyota. Gary developed a conception and worked as art director in making film about Nike retail. Gary held a regional advertising campaign for Scion with the help of SanJFrancisco Attik office.

While making rebranding for Camel, Gary made pictures and design; for a very famous London mark of clothes Maharishi he made an installation. Creative activity of Gary is mostly focused on music and fashion industry.

Smith is a founder of London studio Fontsmith, which specializes in typefaces creation and typeJsolutions for corporate identities and brandJprojects. Fonsmith works closely with corporate clients and large Britain designJcompanies, helping them in unique “typographic identity” development. Among the clients of the studio are: Body Shop, Powergen, SEAT, Post Office and others. Addis began his professional career as a photographer. Then he entered The Clorox Company, where he was responsible for new production promotion. In 1987 Addis started his own business – he created a branding firm. Apart from the fact that Addis is a chairman of Addis Group, Inc., he fills the position of director in Museum of Arts in Berkeley and Pacific Film Archive. Addis is also a consultant in Texas Pacific Group Ventures; Axiom Venture Partners; Bayside Ventures and Take Back California. Является руководителем Высшей академической школы графического дизайна (ВАШГД), профессором Национального института дизайна, академиком российской Академии графического дизайна, членом Комиссии при Президенте РФ по Государственным премиям РФ в области литературы и искусства. Выступал с лекциями в ряде зарубежных университетов. Автор более 300 публикаций и статей по графическому дизайну.

Sergey Serov, Russian representative in ICOGRADA, President of the Golden Bee Moscow International Biennale of Graphic Design (Russia) Graduated from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture name I. E. Repina, Academy of Arts of USSR, postJgraduate course of AllJUnion research institute of technical aesthetics.

Present day Serov is a head of Higher Academic School of Graphic Design, professor of National Institute of Design, member of the Academy of Graphic Design, a member of President of Russia committee on state awards of Russian Federation in the sphere of literature and arts. Serov was a lecturer in some foreign universities. He is the author of more than 300 publications and articles on graphic design.

Это безукоризненная работа международного жюри, в состав которого вошли эксперты высочайшего уровня: Дэвид Хиллман (Великобритания), Михаэль Гаис (Германия), Гэри Хортон (Великобритания), Джейсон Смит (Великобритания), Марго Чейз (США), Тошихиро Онимару (Япония), Билл Гарднер (США), Стивен Аддис (США), Сергей Серов (Россия). Как появился конкурс, по каким правилам он проводился, каковы его результаты и планы организаторов на будущее? У вас есть уникальный шанс не только увидеть лучшие работы во всех десяти конкурсных номинациях, но познакомиться с «кухней» конкурса – тем, что обычно всегда остается за кадром. В поисках совершенства Как один из участников российского рынка дизайна, студия ArtGraphics.ru, являющаяся учредителем и издателем журнала Identity, неоднократно принимала участие в различных дизайнерских конкурсах. В силу специализации в области corporate identity мы в основном принимали участие в конкурсных номинациях, посвященных логотипам и фирменному стилю, или в узкоспециализированных конкурсах подобной тематики. Неизменно восхищаясь самоотверженным трудом людей, организовывающих такие нужные всей рекламно#дизайнерской отрасли мероприятия, мы все же не были полностью удовлетворены форматом и результатами подобных конкурсов. Разумеется, не бывает конкурсов, чьи результаты ни у кого не вызывают споров и нареканий, так же как не бывает истины в последней инстанции в решениях жюри. Однако, несмотря на некоторые собственные конкурсные достижения, формат подобных мероприятий не казался нам единственно возможным. Основные проблемы мы видели в не всегда объективном судействе. На одних конкурсах определенные сомнения вызывала компетенция членов жюри, а на некоторых других доходило даже до того, что члены жюри иногда награждали себя сами или же коллеги по цеху практически по очереди награждали друг друга. Прослеживалось отсутствие реальной конкуренции, вызванной тем, что большинство сильнейших дизайнеров и дизайн#агентств обычно не принимают участия в этих конкурсах. Как следствие, авторитет фестивалей, специализированных конкурсов и их наград был невысок – как в самом дизайн#сообществе, так и среди клиентов. Поначалу возникло желание улучшить уже существующие конкурсы. В частности,

в № 2 журнала Identity была опубликована статья «Шоу или бизнес?», обозначающая некоторые проблемы существующих конкурсов и предлагающая пути их решения. Сначала мы только разговаривали с организаторами практически всех конкурсов и рекомендовали им некоторые изменения формата, но через какое#то время поверили в возможность самим предложить рынку что#то принципиально новое.

В России нам был известен один такой специалист – Сергей Иванович Серов, чью роль в развитии профессии дизайнера невозможно переоценить. Нет, конечно, есть и другие квалифицированные и исключительно порядочные российские специалисты, но конкурс изначально планировался как реально международный, по-

What is Identity: Best of the Best 2006? It is 970 design projects of logos, trade marks and corporate identities from 153 participants of 24 countries in the 5 continents. It is the immaculate work of the international jury, comprising experts of the highest level: David Hillman (UK), Michael Gais (Germany), Gary Horton (UK), Jason Smith (UK), Margo Chase (USA), Toshihiro Onimaru (Japan), Bill Gardner (USA), Steven Addis (USA), Sergey Serov (Russia). How did the contest occur, which rules has it been held to, and what are its results and the plans of the organizers for the future? Well, you have the unique chance of not only seeing the best works in the ten competitive nominations, but also of learning about the “machinery” of the competition, about the things usually left unspoken of.

In Search of Perfection As one of the agents in the Russian design market, ArtGraphics.ru studio, being the founder and the publisher of the Identity magazine, has many times taken part in various design contests. Our specialization lying in the field of corporate identity, we mainly took part in the nominations dealing with logos and corporate style, or otherwise in specific competitions within this field. Every time amazed by the selfless work of the people, who organize these events – so much needed by the entire advertising and design industry, yet we were not fully satisfied with the format and the results of these contests.

Indeed, there cannot be such competitions, the results of which would not rouse disputes and censure, just as there cannot be the ultimate truth in a jury’s decision.

However, despite some of our own contest achievements, the format of the events did not seem to us the only possible. We saw the main problems connected to the sometimes somewhat subjective decisions of the jury. In some contests the competence of some members of the jury could be doubted, in some other it would actually happen that members of the jury would award themselves, or would take turns to award each other. The absence of the real competition could be felt, which was brought about by the fact that the major most powerful designers and design agencies would usually refuse to take part in such contests. It resulted in the low prestige of the festivals, specialized contests and their awards – both in the design community and among the customers.

Initially, we had an urge to improve the existent contests. In particular, issue No. 2 of the Identity magazine we published the article “Show or Business?” and identified some of the problems of the existent contests and proposed ways to solve them. First we just

talked to the organizers of almost every contest and recommended them some format change, but after a while we started believing in the possibility of offering something principally new to the market ourselves.

The New Format The jury at Identity: Best of the Best was decided to consist only of the highest competent experts, whose extreme competence and the immaculate reputation would allow to ensure the objective decision#taking and to

The contest was oriented towards both the designers and the customers, and had several objectives: to discover young talents and show them to the world, to form a posi-

We knew only one such expert in Russia – Sergey Ivanovich Serov, whose role in developing the designer’s profession cannot be overrated. There, naturally, are other qualified and extremely decent Russian specialists, yet the contest was initially planned as factually international, therefore it would be illogical to introduce a significant number of representatives of, unfortunately, not yet the most “designer” country of the world into the jury.

As a result the international jury of Identity: Best of the Best 2006 comprised such global design experts as: David Hillman, partner to Pentagram (UK); Michael Gais, founder and creative director of QWER (Germany); Gary Horton, chief designer of Attik (UK); Jason Smith, founder of Fontsmith (UK); Margo Chase, founder and creative

tive opinion of Russia abroad, to inform market agents of the global trends in design, to acquaint business with designers from around the world, and to increase the general level of the visual culture. Besides, Identity: Best of the Best 2006 enabled us to implement the real experience exchange between Russian and foreign experts.

The contestants’ works were received in digital form, which equalized the chances of the capital city residents and a talent from a provincial town, since the latter did not have to pay for the mailing of the case with his work and worry whether the jury would see it in completely foul shape due to the specifics of the domestic mailing system.

In each nomination the works underwent thorough preliminary preparation for voting.

All works were saved in one and the same format, and each was identified with the

платить за пересылку планшета со своей работой и беспокоиться, что жюри увидит ее в совершенно непотребном виде ввиду специфики работы отечественной почты. В каждой номинации работы прошли тщательную предварительную подготовку к голосованию. Все работы были сохранены в одинаковом формате, при этом каждой был присвоен безликий цифровой код типа L2#125#03, что обеспечивало беспристрастное и объективное судейство. На членов жюри никак не могли подействовать ни громкие или не очень имена дизайнеров, ни страны, «дизайнерские» или не вполне, которые они представляют. На оценку жюри были представлены 300 лучших работ. Почему именно 300? Дело в том, что мы и не предполагали, что уже первый конкурс Identity: Best of the Best соберет 970 работ от 153 участников из двадцати четырех стран пяти континентов. Изначально со всеми членами жюри у нас была договоренность, что они выделят для оценки работ примерно один свой рабочий день. Мы полагали, что этого будет достаточно для оценки всех работ. В любом случае, выделить для оценки работ больше времени экспертам такого уровня было невозможно. Разумеется, оценить за день почти тысячу работ было абсолютно нереально. Было очевидно, что уровень одних работ был существенно выше, чем других. Поэтому, исходя из общего количества присланных работ и их распределения по номинациям, для голосования членов жюри была выбрана цифра 300, при этом из каждой подноминации логотипов было выбрано для голосования по сорок работ, а из каждой подноминации фирменного стиля – по двадцать работ. Но даже наше предложение оценить 300 работ некоторые члены жюри сочли «негуманным» и посетовали на столь большую нагрузку. И все же конкурс состоялся и каждый из девяти членов жюри добросовестно оценил 300 работ по 10#балльной шкале, прокомментировав наиболее сильные на его взгляд работы в каждой из десяти номинаций конкурса. Не знаю, что в момент оценки работ испытывали члены жюри, но за себя могу сказать честно: когда мы с Ольгой Пуртовой, арт#директором ArtGraphics.ru и Identity, отбирали работы для голосования, у меня заболело сердце. За каждую работу мы переживали во много раз больше, чем переживали бы за свою собственную (доведись ей принять участие в конкурсе; разумеется, мы приняли решение не дискредитировать конкурс, выставляя на него работы организаторов). «Первые блины» Сергея Ивановича Серова настолько увлек процесс судейства, что он потратил на это полночи, а затем так прокомментировал увиденное: «Уровень работ, поданных на Identity: Best of the Best 2006, проводившийся впервые, меня приятно удивил. Особенно сильно американского мэтра поразила работа Валерия Фиронова – Digital Angel, занявшая в итоге первое место в номинации L3, в которой была самая жесткая конкуренция – более 350 присланных работ. Билл никак не мог поверить, что автором этого логотипа является дизайнер из России. Благодаря фонду «Арт#Москва», все работы лонг#листа можно было увидеть на фирменной экспозиции на выставке «Дизайн и Реклама», где 23 марта журнал Identity провел День графического дизайна. «Это замечательно, что в век навороченных, но порой бессмысленных логотипов и аватаров, еще можно встретить поистине звездные примеры концептуальных решений. Мне самому больше всего понравился логотип для модного дома “Елена Цветкова”, выполненный студией fallindesign». Верджил Скотт, Scott Design (США) лела, но все равно не подвела организаторов и добросовестно оценила все работы – просто ей был предоставлен один дополнительный день для голосования. Дольше всех работы оценивал японский член жюри – Тошихиро Онимару, но когда он прислал свои результаты, победители во многих номинациях были уже практически недосягаемы, поэтому расстановка мест существенно не изменилась. Это говорит о том, что число «9» является оптимальным количеством членов жюри и позволяет практически полностью исключить элемент случайности при голосовании. Конечно, у всех экспертов есть свои пристрастия и подход к оценке работ. Например, Дэвид Хиллман признался: «Я могу назвать причины, руководствуясь которыми я делал свой выбор. Не важно, какой визуальный язык был использован при создании того или иного проекта. Важна основная идея. Иными словами, я не обращал внимания на стиль и манеру исполнения – я смотрел только на идею». Однако, по#настояще-

Виктор Голубинов, член Союза дизайнеров России и арт#директор студии Icom, так отозвался о конкурсе: «Очень рад появлению нового, но уже с первых шагов столь авторитетного конкурса логотипов, торговых марок и фирменного стиля Identity: Best of the Best 2006. Меня поразили не только международное жюри, но и уровень и широта охвата участников. Победить в конкурсе с таким жюри и с такими сильными соперниками из самых разных стран было втройне приятно. В ряду международных конкурсов товарных знаков явно прибыло, и это новое прибавление рискует стать самым интересным, поскольку с самого начала подошло к оценке работ по гамбургскому счету, не взирая на лица и конъюнктуру».

300 best works were offered for the jury’s consideration. Why 300? The thing is that we didn’t even imagine that the first ever Identity: Best of the Best contest would attract 970 works of 153 participants from twenty four countries in the five continents.

Initially, we had an agreement with every member of the jury that they would need to allocate about one working day for the evaluation procedure. We thought that this would be enough to evaluate all works. At any rate, it was impossible to allocate more time of such experts for this kind of task. Naturally, to evaluate about a thousand works in a day was impossible too. It was obvious that the level of some works was much higher than the level of others. Thus, according to the total number of the works received and their distribution within the nominations, “300” was chosen to be the number of works for voting. Alongside, in each sub#nomination of logos forty works were selected, and twenty works in each sub#nomination of corporate identity. But even this proposal to evaluate 300 works was taken by some members of the jury as “inhumane” and they complained of the enormous loading. And yet the contest did take place and each of the nine jurors conscientiously assessed 300 works by the scale of 10, commenting upon, in their opinion, the strongest works in all the ten nominations.

I don’t know what the jurors felt at the point of turning their verdicts in, but I can honestly say for myself: when I and Olga Purtova, art director of ArtGraphics.ru and Identity magazine, selected works for voting, my heart was breaking. Our hearts ached for every work times greater than they would for

Toshihiro Onimaru – the Japanese juror – took it longest to evaluate, yet when his results arrived, the victors in many nominations were practically unattainable, and therefore the positions did not change considerably. This is to say that “9” is the optimal number of jurors and it fully excludes the element of eventuality from voting.

Of course, all experts have their partialities and approaches to assessment. For instance, David Hillman confided: “I can name the reasons I was guided by in my choice. It’s

In May 2006, upon the graceful offer of the administration of LenExpo exhibition hall, the best works of the contest were exposed to the broad audience in St. Petersburg, at the exhibition “Advertising and Information”. Viktor Golubinov, member of the Russian Designers’ Union and art director of Icom studio, said the following regarding the contest: “I’am extremely pleased by the appearance of the new, and yet quite prestigious from the very first steps, contest in logos, trade marks and corporate identities Identity: Best of the Best 2006. I was amazed not only by the international jury, but by the level and the span of the participatory group. To win a contest with this kind of jury and this kind of opponents from most various countries is three times as pleasing. We have a newcomer in the list of international logo competitions, and this newcomer is risking becoming the most interesting, since from the very beginning they have chosen the honest rating for evaluation, regardless of the persona and the situation”.

Having learned about the results of the contest, Federico Garcia of Federicografia noted: “It’s pleasing to read such inspiring news. I’m very glad that my work for ELA was noted among the others. Looking at the winning works, I see why I am not among the

Например, «Модный дом “Елена Цветкова”» (fallindesign, Россия) и Maraschino (Studio Cuculic, Хорватия) стали явными лидерами в своих номинациях, да и в конкурсе в целом.

Будущее конкурса Сергей Иванович Серов, комментируя уровень и результаты конкурса, сказал: «Конкурс Identity: Best of the Best 2006 удивил мощным стартом. Организаторам удались Нью#Васюки: все расходы только на телеграммы – и столица автоматически переносится в Identity. Они нашли удачную формулу мероприятия, позволившую заметно повысить планку проводимых в этой области профессиональных турниров, привлечь международных экспертов и резко расширить географические границы конкурса. В результате конкурс порадовал многими свежими, интересными работами, он обозначил новый взгляд на знаки и логотипы.

The discovery of the contest became the branding agency Brandient from Romania (in March 2006 it became part of Enterprise IG – one of the international brand#consulting agencies of the Big Five) and Studio Cuculic from Croatia, as well as the extraordinary Sakkal Design studio from the USA, specializing in Arabic calligraphy. The Future of the Contest Sergey Serov, commenting on the level and results of the contest, said: “Identity: Best of the Best 2006 astonished me with the powerful start. The organizers managed to create the Utopia: with only the expenditures on the wire – and you have the Capitol moving to Identity. They found a successful formula to an event, which enabled them to substantively lift the level of the field’s professional tournaments, attracting international experts and immensely broadening the geographical borders of the contest. Resulting from this, the contest captured many a fresh and interesting work, it outlined a new standpoint for signs and logos. Previously, such contests in this field mainly focused on the professional force of design, on the graphic construction of the logo easily speaking through black and white. Identity: Best of the Best 2006 looked at signage and logos from the point of view of a served course, dressed and seasoned to encourage appetite, and the cast of color and texture turned the final product into a festive show. In fact, the contest demonstrated the

contest and the conditions for partaking.

Through this communication, potential participants of Identity: Best of the Best 2007 offer us informational support and promotion of the event on the web#sites and blogs of design communities all around the world. The contest of 2006 has already been reviewed on the large design portals of Germany, the

The 2007 jury composition will change, yet the star status will remain – perhaps, it’s enough to say that the world leader of brand consulting and commercial design – Landor Associates – offered to delegate a juror on their part to Identity: Best of the Best 2007, as well as many other worldwide known design studios and branding agencies. That means that all the participants of the coming contest will get an invaluable opportunity to understand their actual strength and to express themselves to potential customers and the global design community.

In the days when this article was being written, we received an invitation from ICOGRADA to join the ICOGRADA Media Network – the international association of design#oriented mass media. Today, the Identity magazine is a member of the ICOGRADA Media Network, and the contest Identity: Best of the Best 2007 will be conducted under the auspices of ICOGRADA and in full compliance to the recommendations of

Товарный знак – аббревиатура FC, составленная из начальных букв термина fillling company («наполняющая компания») и стилизованная в форме дозатора – предмета, широко используемого в парфюмерии и косметике, всем хорошо знакомого, легко узнаваемого и очень показательного для рассматриваемого класса товаров и услуг. Отзыв членов жюри: Стивен Аддис: «Я выбрал два проекта в этой категории. И F&C, и Landl визуально описывают компании. F&C изображает пузатую бутылку с латинской буквой F, погруженную в емкость C. Landl имитирует действие по открытию и закрытию дверейJштор. Обе эти работы исключительные».

Название должно было содержать две буквы L, потому что у обоих учредителей фамилии начинаются с этой буквы, бренд должен был быть разработан в латинице, так как в производстве применяются в основном импортные комплектующие и технологии. Решение: визуализация концепции L and L; в знаке Landl частично закрытые буквы создают аллюзию сдвигающихся дверей шкафаJкупе. Отзыв членов жюри: Гэри Хортон: «Очень свежее использование типографики. Designers: Icom; Victor Golubinov – art director (Russia) Date: 2005 Тhe objective has been to produce a logo for a modern, hiJtech company, marketing the readymade formulations, as well as perfumes and cosmetics for their consecutive production under the contractors’ trademarks. The solution is the trade logo – the acronym FC, combining the two initial letters of the term “Filling Company”, and stylized to shape a dispenser – an object broadly used in perfumery and cosmetics, wellJknown, easily recognized and very demonstrative for the class of goods and services considered.

Jurymen’ comments: Steven Addis: “I have chosen two as a tie in this category. Both F&C and Landl visually describe the companies. F&C subltly depicts the pump bottle with the “f ” nestled in the bowl of the “c”. Landl shows the action of opening or closing sliding doors. Both of these marks are exceptional”.

Solution: L and L – Landl, partially covered letters produce an impression of sliding compartment doors.

Jurymen’ comments: Gary Horton: “I have selected this logo as I think it is a very refreshing use of typography to convey the company’s product”.

Michael Gais: “A very simple cut makes the few letters to a very recognizable sign. Hopefully there isn’t such logo yet”.

В 2005 г. общество решило изменить свой имидж, поставив целью включить в сферу своей деятельности телефонные услуги и Интернет. Для соответствия новым областям деятельности компании и ее новому позиционированию компания Brandient предложила новое название Radiocom и разработала современный логотип, несущий в себе образ высоких технологий и идею прогресса. Визуальный имидж Radiocom представляет собой волновое поле, изображенное в виде вышки – конструкции, олицетворяющей развитие, основательность и совершенство. Линии логотипа перпендикулярны, что передает идею силы, надежности и стабильности, в то время как зеленый цвет подчеркивает идею надежности и доступности. In 2005 it decided to redefine its identity and image, with the specific aim to expand the business into telephony and Internet. In order to support the competences and the new positioning, Brandient proposed the new verbal identity Radiocom and designed a modern logo, which breathes technology and supports the idea of progress. The visual identity of Radiocom represents a wave field optically forming a tower, a construction aspiring to development, maturity / advance, and performance. The logo lines are perpendicular, communicating power, credibility and stability, while the green color reinforces the idea of credibility and closeness.

Компания, существующая двадцать пять лет, решила поменять свой корпоративный имидж. Задача заключалась в разработке логотипа, выделяющегося среди других логотипов в сфере деятельности компании. Был предложен логотип, который отражает природу компании. Символ H, обозначающий Hilliard’s, помещен в пространство между красным и синим фрагментами флага. Флаг визуализирует ветер, а цвета символизируют теплый и холодный воздух.

A builder based in Montana that already had a fantastic name – Measure Twice – referring to the old building axiom that you “measure twice, cut once”. Two measuring frames were used to convey the letter M and the aspect of doing something twice in order to be precise. The shapes also reflect the mountainous landscapes of the area.

Как точно и элегантно передано высокое качество работы клиента, без применения банальных символов королевской короны и прочей атрибутики. Главное – показать две различные философии в одном изображении. Знак состоит из двух фигур: креста и окружности. Крест символизирует мужское начало, круг – женское. Также знак своей формой напоминает кольцо, тем самым говорит об одной из главных областей деятельности галереи – ювелирном искусстве. Кольцо к тому же является символом гармонии и единства. The logo should reflect: the founders – a couple, man and woman; the two arts, where the image does not necessarily have to be connoted as “jewelry” or “fine arts”; the main thing is to show the two different philosophies in one image. The logo is composed of two figures – a cross and a circle, where the cross stands for “male”, and the circle for “female”. With its shape the logo also reminds of a ring, thus speaking of one of the gallery’s activities – art of jewelry. The ring also denotes harmony and unity.

Сюрреалистический значок, объединивший пресловутые мужские «вредные привычки» – хороший табак, удобную трубку, чашечку ароматного кофе и полное отсутствие суеты, получил развитие в стиле цвета табачного дыма и философской полосатости: там, за стенами бара – суета, здесь – полная благодати и лени атмосфера сибаритства, комфорта и удовольствия. The surrealistic logo adjoining the notorious “vices” of men – good tobacco, a convenient pipe, a cup of flavorous coffee and the perfect peace – is further developed through the stylized tobacco smoke color and the philosophic striped pattern: there, beyond the walls of the bar, is the bustle of the mall, here is the graceful and lazy atmosphere of sybaritism, comfort and pleasure.

Jurymen’ comments: Bill Gardner: “This simple illustrative logo does a great job of blending coffee drinking and smoking or as the name indicates the shop of bad vices. this mark tickled me with the understated illustration style. It could have been easily over drawn but it carries just the right detail with it’s quasi etched style”.

Domo – лидер по продаже электроники и предметов домашнего обихода в Румынии. Компания была образована группой местных предпринимателей в последние десять лет. Переход от статуса партнерства к корпорации повлек за собой ряд проблем, и в 2005 г. компания Domo решила обновить свой фирменный стиль. Базируясь на слогане «Дом домашних принадлежностей», был разработан радостный и веселый бренд, который к тому же имел дружественные и не выдуманные отношения с потребителями. Оптимистичный дизайн логотипа объемен, динамичен и ярок. Шутливые полосатые шары сразу стали запоминающимися элементами компании.

Проект: разработка логотипа для гостиничного комплекса «Крымская Ривьера» Дизайнеры: Viva Design! studio; Сергей Минюк – артJдиректор (Украина) Год: 2005 Необходимо было создать логотип для бара Pool Bar, входящего в гостиничный комплекс, подчеркнув характерную для бара атмосферу у бассейна. Разработан активный, бесшабашный логотип, приглашающий к веселому отдыху со спиртными напитками. Черный, неровно стоящий квадрат усиливает яркие цвета букв логотипа, неформальность решения подчеркивает замена двух букв О отпечатками донышек барных бокалов и перевернутая буква А, в контурах которой просматривается силуэт бокала.

Pool Bar (short list, L2) Client: Chronos Project: logo development for a Crimean Rivera Hotel Complex Designers: Viva Design! studio; Minyuk Sergey – art director (Ukraine) Date: 2005 The challenge was to create a logo for a bar titled Pool Bar, part to the Crimean Rivera Hotel Complex, emphasizing the atmosphere typical of a bar by a pool. The result was active, dareJdevil logo inviting everyone to join the reckless leisure with spirits. The black square, unstable in its standing, reinforces the vivid colors of the logo’s letters; the informality of the solution is accentuated with the O’s substituted by the barJglass bottom prints and the inverted A, encapsulating a contour of a glass.

Marking the transition from entrepreneurship to corporation as well as facing a tougher competition, in 2005 Domo decided to refresh its identity. On the positioning “home of home appliances”, Brandient designed a brand full of life and joy, having a pleasant and not pretentious relationship with the customer. The optimistic design of the logo is spatial, dynamic and colorful, and the playful striped balls became quickly a memorable brand property. The experience is enhanced in store by a set of graphic elements which further build, enhance and protect the identity.

Ключевой задачей при проектировании знака было преодолеть стереотипы древнеримских и античных образов в представлении публики, поэтому была предложена идея представить Колизей не как руины Вечного города, а как действие, страсть и энергию. Так в основе знака появилась динамично закрученная характерная спираль. В зависимости от средств, форм и задачи (например: неоновая конструкция) цветовая гамма знака меняется.

Coliseum (short list, L2) Client: Coliseum Nightclub Project: to develop a logo Designers: Altapress Publishing Design Studio; Alexey Shelepov – art director (Russia) Date: 2005 During several years the Coliseum Nightclub was the biggest danceJfloor of Barnaul (Siberia), hence the ambitious title. The key task while developing a logo was to overcome the stereotypes (the antique and Roman imagery) in public perception.

Therefore, an idea of presenting Coliseum as action, passion and energy, rather than ruins of the Eternal City, was offered. Thus, the logo was based on the dynamically winding characteristic spiral. Since the color scheme may change, depending on the means, form and task of the sign (e.g. neon lights).

Заказчиком была поставлена задача разработать довольно простой и запоминающийся образ, который можно было бы легко воспроизвести любому, кто его когдаJлибо видел. Легкость и воздушность исполнения, а также лаконичность формы знака были призваны подчеркнуть «чистоту» названия. В процессе разработки буквы аббревиатуры были выделены в графический образ и в последствии стилизованы под крылья ангела, а для придания более «цифрового» вида нимб был изображен в виде компактJдиска.

Easiness and lightness of implementation and shape conciseness were called upon to underline the cleanness of a name. The letters of an abbreviation were composed into a graphic image of angel’s wings. To make the picture more digital, a halo was depicted in the form of CD. Design needs to keep an aesthetics and logicality in a balanced state of mind. Design can solve a root problem. This is the guiding principle of the company name & logo design. Root is part of a plant that keeps it firmly in the soil and absorbs water and food from the soil. It is a fundamental cause of the problem. The imaginary journey is to discover the root of the problem, then understand the problem and make an analysis to bring solution, innovation to tackle it by our hand. Smartree (шортJлист, L3) Заказчик: Smartree Ltd Проект: редизайн фирменного стиля Дизайнеры: Brandient; Кристиан «Кит» Пол – креативный директор (Румыния) Год: 2002 Ранее компания называлась umanresources.ro. Она имела внушительное портфолио сетевых приложений по работе с персоналом, но не имела признания на местном (румынском) рынке. Само название компании и не проработанный должным образом корпоративный стиль не соответствовали высокому уровню профессионализма и корпоративной культуры компании. Было предложено новое название (Smartree), которое тут же было подхвачено всей организацией. Позиционирование бренда как «кислорода для бизнеса» (oxygen for business) и удачный логотип, в котором присутствует «цифровое дерево», сформировали основу его brand identity. Гармоничное сочетание позиционирования и риторики бренда были развиты сотрудниками компании (которые действуют с умом – with smartitude), благодаря чему организация стала создателем нового бренда. Отзывы членов жюри: Гэри Хортон: «Великолепно придумано – ввести органический элемент в ITJтехнологии. Типографика и иконки отлично сочетаются по форме выполнения и цвету».

Smartree (short list, L3) Client: Smartree Ltd Project: redoing of corporate identity Designers: Brandient; Cristian “Kit” Paul – creative director (Romania) Date: 2002 Rebranding of a company called previously humanresources.ro, with an impressive portfolio of webJbased HR applications, but little recognition on the local (Romanian) market. The generic name and the poorlyJdesigned corporate identity were not doing justice to a strong professional & entrepreneurial culture. Brandient created a new name that was instantly embraced by the whole organisation: Smartree. The brand positioning Oxygen for Business and the outstanding logotype, designed with an embedded “digital tree”, completed the core of brand identity. The whole corporate identity was designed to convey relaxation and “oxygenation”, but still talking business.

The coherent positioning and brand rhetoric inspired the employees to take it further (e.g. they act with “smartitude”) and thus the organization became a brand builder.

Jurymen’ comments: Gary Horton: “I have selected this logo as it dose a great job of introducing and organic element into the IT industry wile staying relevant to the company’s service. The typography and icon work well together along with the color”.

QP (шортJлист, L3) Заказчик: QP Проект: разработка логотипа для телемагазина Дизайнеры: Defa Gruppe; Дмитрий Козлов, Вадим Игонин – артJдиректора (Россия) Год: 2001 Уже само слегка игривое название QP (в русской транскрипции «КуПи») лаконично и в то же время открыто призывает совершить покупку. Для логотипа было найдено не менее лаконичное и элегантное графическое решение. Идея проста и читаема – классический кошелек с защелкой, легким движением дизайнерской мысли превращенный в телевизор с комнатной антенной. Логотип отражает основное послание заказчика: кошелек уместно доставать и сидя на диване перед телевизором.

Musictown (шортJлист, L3) Заказчик: Musictown Проект: создание логотипа для студии звукозаписи Дизайнер: Алексей Рудь (Россия) Год: 2006 Требовалось обыграть в знаке название компании. Так как студия молодая, логотип должен помочь создать образ современной, амбициозной компании. При этом логотип должен быть остроумным и смелым. Знак объединяет стилизованные символы города и скрытый символ музыки – клавиши фортепиано, видные лишь при внимательном взгляде на логотип. Специально разработанный шрифт в совокупности с цветом знака придает компании современный, яркий имидж.

The slightly playful title QP in itself laconically and at the same time openly calls to do some shopping (in Russian it means “buy”). The graphic logo has been expressed as laconically and elegantly. The idea is simple and perceptible – a classical purse with a snap, with an easy move of the designer’s thought, turned into a TV set with the “rabbit ears”. A fully friendly logo, with the recognizable Defa style, utmost clearly reflects the main message of the client: it’s completely fit to reach out for your purse sitting in front of your TV set.

It was demanded to play with the name of a company in the sign itself. Since the studio is young, the logo should help create an image of a modern, ambitious company. And yet the logo should be witty and bold. The logo adjoins the stylized symbols of a town and the “hidden” music symbol – piano keys, visible only at a closer look. The specifically developed font, in combination with the logo’s color, creates a modern and vivid image of the company.

Было предложено переименовать клинику в «Центр пренатального развития», чтобы передать основную задачу клиники – заботу о будущих детях и их матерях. Логотип «мать – дитя – сердце» символизирует глубокую связь между матерью и ее ребенком и подчеркивает стремление клиники заботиться о своих пациентах. Задача состояла в создании уникального представления того, к чему стремится группа в буквальном и переносном смысле. Разработанный логотип представляет собой творческое решение, олицетворяющее основательность и надежность.

Date: 2005 The challenge was to reJname and reJID a prenatal practice and convey a nurturing, caring feel.

The practice was renamed to Center for Prenatal Development in an effort to communicate the practice’s core focus – caring for unborn babies and their mothers. The logo mother/child/heart symbolizes the deep connection mothers have for their babies and helps to reinforce the practice’s commitment to their patients.

Оно требует специальных знаний и точности в определении цвета для каждой точки. Используемый для измерений циркуль символизирует точные вычисления. ACME означает высшую стадию развития. Бумажные элементы, выходящие за пределы концов циркуля, формируют букву A, что образует образ ACME.

This logo provided the client with a creative solution that portrayed establishment and trustworthiness.

The name ACME is a 40 year old printing company. The old logo is very simple, just use 4 small dot in C.M.Y.K color. The client who requests an idea of the new logo is classic and including four dots elements that means C.M.Y.K. as similar to the original logo. C.M.Y.K. is primary colors in printing. Bill Gardner: “I’ve liked this mark since I first saw it. Simple and memorable. I have no idea why the company is called Froggy but that aside the digital connection and the cleverness or creating a sticky toed frog foot just makes you smile.

Though I’m not in love with dimensional rendering for logos I think it works well here”.

Froggy – это торговая марка для компьютеров. В 2004 г. компания «ИВС» решила обновить марку, повысить ее конкурентоспособность и увеличить долю рынка. Типичные потребители – это люди, которые хотят иметь компьютер, но не разбираются в них. Простая форма логотипа имеет многоуровневую смысловую нагрузку. Основное значение нового логотипа – лягушачья лапка, рука помощи в сложном компьютерном мире, которую лягушонок готов протянуть каждому. Но, кроме этого, логотип можно рассматривать как дерево (принцип систематизации продукции) или контакты микросхем (компьютерная тематика). Некоторые видят в нем известный символ USB.

Froggy is a trademark for the computers. In 2004 the IVS Company decided to renovate the brand and to increase its competitiveness and its market share. The typical consumer is a person, who wants to have a PC, yet having no idea what it should be. The simple form logo has multiJlevel connotations. The main implication of the new logo – a frog’s pad – is the helping hand in the complex computer world the Froggy is ready to reach you with. Besides, the logo can be viewed as a tree – the principle of the product systematization – or as microchip pins – computer theme.

Some compare it to the wellJknown symbol of USB.

Задача заключалась в разработке нового стиля Elenov, создании понятной всем торговой марки. Были предложены: простой каллиграфический подход, расположение букв в форме виноградной грозди. Результатом стало появление понятной всем торговой марки с ясной идеей. Отзывы членов жюри: Михаэль Гаис: «Картинка и имя – неделимое целое. Очень симпатично и гармонично. Вот так я думаю о вине».

Project: logo development for Macedonian wine producer Designer: Jelena Drobac (Serbia) Date: 2005 Macedonian family wine business is trying to reach new markets. The challenge was to rebrand Elenov, change the old looking logo and to create a broadly understood trade mark. The solution was simple calligraphic approach, letters are positioned to create the shape of grapes. It became a globally understood trade mark with a clear message.

I hope it stands for the field I am thinking of wine”.

Designers: Zeljka Plasajec – art director; Vanja Cuculic, Damir Bralic (Croatia) Date: 2005 Parallax itself is an apparent change in the direction of an object, caused by a change in observational position that provides a new line of sight, and this phenomena has been successfully presented through slick usage of typography and color.

Jurymen’ comments: Bill Gardner: “The designer searched deep to play out this unique handling of the wordmark created by the transparent overlays that give the appearance of two different light sources. It would have been an easy solution to use a pictorial logo here but everything you need to communicate visually happens in the wordmark itself”.

Оригинальный подход к производству фирменных молочных продуктов вывел компанию Albalact в число пяти крупнейших игроков на румынском рынке. На этом этапе компании нужна новая философия, новый стиль и имидж, которые способствовали бы быстрому и успешному развитию. В новом фирменном стиле использованы элементы, олицетворяющие свежесть, природу и заботу о качестве. Они выражены в живом сочетании, объединяющем сердце, коровье вымя и льющееся молоко. Ассоциацию с природой и свежестью усиливают зеленый, белый и голубой цвета. At this stage, the company needed a new philosophy, a new identity, and a new image to support the quick and successful evolution. The new corporate identity engages subtly the elements of freshness, nature and care for quality. The spirited mixture between a heart, a cow udder and a milk flow reflects them, while the design uses green, white and blue to endorse the association with nature and freshness.

Jurymen’ comments: Gary Horton: “I have selected this logo as I think the mark shows great personality and a lightJhearted take on the industry. It really conveys the health and organic benefits of the product as well as its origin”.

Задача состояла в том, чтобы отразить в знаке основные виды деятельности компании: производство и продажу высококачественных продуктов нефтепереработки. Логотип должен легко адаптироваться к различным композиционным и размерноJмасштабным трансформациям. Графическую основу знака образует стилизованное изображение факела, отсылающее к сфере деятельности компании. Рукоятка факела является одновременно и «галочкой», символом превосходства и выбора этого товара из ряда продуктов конкурентов. Фирменные цвета отражают активность и амбициозность компании.

Задача заключалась в разработке стиля продукта, подчеркивающего его подход к спасательным аппаратам подводного дыхания. В логотипе должны были присутствовать символ кислорода и название продукта Xtreme O2, а также объединяющая тема воды. Изображенные в специально созданном стиле векторные буквы (X и O, обозначающие Xtreme O2) пересекаются в виде значка, что образует название продукта. Но поскольку место для изображения на самом продукте ограничено, те же буквы X и O используются для образования изображения в виде рыбы, что подчеркивает назначение продукта.

Simple – виноторговая компания, с блестящей репутацией на рынке, прогрессивным взглядом на принципы своей работы и крайне щепетильным отношением к вопросам собственного имиджа. Была поставлена задача: Simple должна выглядеть самой прогрессивной и современной компанией в своем сегменте. Графическое решение знака бескомпромиссно и абсолютно соответствует имени компании. Очевидно, что в данном случае утвержденный вариант максимально лаконичного написания был едва ли не единственно возможным и бесспорно наилучшим решением. Никаких характерных для рынка виноторговли графических приемов, никакой архаики и упора на традиции, абсолютная чистота и графичность. О вине напоминает только точка чистого пурпурного цвета и слоган «Simple – это не просто вино, это стиль жизни».

The challenge was to create the whole system of corporate identity. Simple is a brilliantly reputable wine dealer of the progressive outlook upon the principles of its work and extremely scrupulous attitude to the issues of selfJimaging. The objective set was to make Simple look the most progressive and modern company in its segment.

The graphic design of the logo is ultimatistic and absolutely correspondent to the name of the company. Obviously, in this case the approved option of the maximally laconic inscription was principally the only possible and no doubt the best solution. No graphic moves typical of the wine trade market, no archaisms or tradition emphasis, but the absolute purity and graphic simplicity. The wine is only reminded of by the dot of pure purple and the slogan: “Simple – not simply a wine but a lifestyle”.

Designer: Alexey Rud’ (Russia) Date: 2006 The task was to reflect in the logo the main activities of the company: manufacturing and sales of quality oil products. The logo should be easily adaptable to various compositional and sizeJandJscale transformations. The stylized torch, serving the basis for the logo, links us to the company’s activities. The handle of the torch is simultaneously a “tick”, a symbol of supremacy and preference of this good among the competitors.

The corporate colors reflect the company’s activity and ambitions.

Designers: Vasco Morelli, Michael Jimenez (USA) Date: 2002 The challenge was to create a product identity highlighting his emergency underwater breathing apparatus product concept. The logo had to speak to the oxygen and Xtreme O2 product name, while incorporating an underlying water theme.

The vectorJbased custom letters are forged to make on icon (the X and O for Xtreme O2), forming the literal name of the product. But, having limited space on the product itself for extraneous imagery, the X and O were also adapted to create a fishJlike organism, mimicking the functionality as well.

«Нефтегазмаш» (шортJлист, L4) Заказчик: «Нефтегазмаш» Проект: разработка логотипа Дизайнер: Виктор Голубинов (Россия) Год: 2004 Задача – создание торговой марки для самого завода «Нефтегазмаш» и его продукции: передвижных устройства для измерения количества выходящей нефти из скважины, с целью замещения выкачанных объемов нефти водой и предотвращения образования пустот. Ключевые слова: «замеряем», «распределяем», «закачиваем». Решением стало создание знака, который представляет собой симбиоз капли нефти и изображения кита. Кит – животное мощное, большое, всегда воспринимаемое только позитивно. Кит обитает в водной среде, погружаясь на самые глубины (вытесняя, кстати, по закону Архимеда, объем воды равный объему собственного тела). Отсюда и решение, соответствующее задаче, направлению деятельности и девизу. Струя воды сочетается с пастью кита или бликом на черной капле нефти.

«РоссоJМ» (шортJлист, L4) Заказчик: «РоссоJМ» Проект: разработка логотипа для компанииJпроизводителя орехов и сухофруктов Дизайнеры: Defa Gruppe; Роман Павленко – артJдиректор (Россия) Год: 2005 Требовалось разработать дружелюбный современный логотип, который отражал бы специфику деятельности компании и одинаково хорошо смотрелся бы как в деловой документации, так и на разноцветных упаковках. Совместно с клиентом были исследованы современные тенденции в европейском и японском дизайне продуктовой упаковки, изучены полсотни тематических каталогов и журналов. В итоге логотип получился таким же вкусным, как и сама продукция компании.

RossoJM (short list, L4) Neftegazmash (short list, L4) Client: Neftegasmash Company Project: logo development Designer: Victor Golubinov (Russia) Date: 2004 Both a logo for the Neftegazmash plant itself and a trademark for its products: mobile volume meter of the wellhead flow (oil), helping substitute water for the oil to avoid the formation of cavities. The keywords were: Meter, Distribute, Pump. The logo is a symbiosis of an oil drop and a whale image. Whale is a strong and big animal, always perceived positively. Whale inhabits the water, submerging into the very depths (by the way, pushing out as much water as is the volume of its body, according to Archimedes). Hence the solution, correspondent to the objective, activity field and the motto. The water jet blends in well with the mouth of the whale and the splotch on the black oil drop.

Client: RossoJM Project: logo development for a company, producing nuts and dried fruit Designers: Defa Gruppe; Roman Pavlenko – art director (Russia) Date: 2005 It was necessary to develop a friendly and modern logo reflecting the specifics of the company’s activity and similarly goodJlooking both in the business forms and on the color packaging.

Together with the client, we have researched the modern trends in the European and Japanese food stuff packaging design, studied about fifty thematic catalogues and magazines. Having rejected several dozen variations of the logo, and having many a time checked even such nuances as letter curvature – in the end of the day we had the very option, which satisfied the scrupulous client. Finally, the logo turned out to be as tasty as the product.

Шаррон Краус (Sharron Kraus), музыкант из Оксфорда (Великобритания), создает «темную музыку в народном стиле для нового тысячелетия». Она одарена чистым и тонким голосом, скрывающим тот факт, что некоторая ее лирика описывает очень темные предметы. Beautiful Twisted – действительно очень подходящее название для этого альбома. Автор заказала логотип, который должен быть темным, но в то же время наполненным жизнью, – без сложностей и прикрас и в то же время нереальный, соответствующий стилю ее музыки, которую можно описать как «мрачную оригинальную фолкJмузыку с характерными богатыми вокальными партиями». Был разработан логотип, дополняющий музыкальный стиль клиента. Упаковка компактJдиска (также разработанная компанией angryporcupine*design) содержит лицевую картинку в виде изогнутого дерева, которое выглядит так, будто его освещает луна. В качестве логотипа выбрана гарнитура, которая дополняет не только лицевую картинку, но и темные изогнутые изображения в буклете компактJдиска. Beautiful Twisted (short list, L4) Client: Sharron Kraus Project: logo development for a CD Designers: angryporcupine*design; Cheryl RoderJQuill – art director (USA) Date: 2001 Sharron Kraus, an Oxford (UK) musician, creates “dark folk music for the new millennium”.

Sharron Kraus has been gifted with a voice so pure, so fragile that it disguises the fact that some of the lyrics deal with very dark subjects. Beautiful Twisted is indeed an aptly titled CD. The client requested a logo and packaging solution that is dark, yet teeming with life – lo tech, gritty, yet surreal, to match her musical style, described as “darkly original folk music characterized by soilJrich vocals”. The logo complements the clients’ musical style. The CD packaging contains a cover image of a twisted tree, manipulated to appear illuminated by the light of the moon. For the logo was chosen a typeface that would not only complement the cover image, but also the dark and twisted imagery found within the CD booklet.

Jurymen’ comments: Steven Addis: “My favorite in this category is Beautiful Twisted as it uses typography so successfully capture the appropriate essence”.

The task was to design a logo when the Festival was held for the first time.

Laconic, “handmade” logo conveys free and creative atmosphere, and the grapheme of the logo reflects the geography of the place where the Festival is held resembling meander.

The negative area creates a pot that has just been spun on a wheel The line work is as if drafted by a finger covered with clay, signifying the crudeness of the process that creates a thing of beauty from a substance so base. The snail signifies the slow but sure process involved in throwing a pot and what a memorable little creature that make you feel good about the event”.

Глядя на логотип, создается впечатление, что эти веселые буквы и несколько прямых линий играют в прятки друг с другом. Прямые линии вызывают ассоциацию со штрихкодом, и, кроме того, они ассоциируются с нотами.

На логотипе изображен скелет рыбы. Количество ее хребетных костей указывает на то, что это малек. Рваный круг одновременно ассоциируется и с икринкой, началом жизни, и с крючком рыболова – смертью.

The theme for 2006 is PlayJCityJSpace, and the participants are required to study the role of play in the city and form new approaches and experiences to the use of the city. I chose the Hopscotch game as a source of inspiration for the project’s identity. This game takes place in the street; children often draw it with colourful chalks in their immediate surrounding, and by doing so claim the public space as their own. There were created a logo, a playful website and will later base the project’s street advertising on Hopscotch, creating publicity to be directly applied to the pavement.

Отправной точкой для создания знака стал цветовой веер, который является одним из главных инструментов специалистов в области колористики. Project: to develop a corporate identity

The company is operating in the market of paintwork materials for bodywork repair and the equipment of carJcare centers. It was necessary to create a modern, dynamic and colorful image.

The new image had to associate the company to the novelty, uniqueness, and the aspiration to never stop at what has already been reached. The starting point for the logo creation was selected to be the “color fan”, which is one of the major tools for the colorist.

Gary Horton: “I have selected this project purely on the strength of the mark and the way that it has forms the brand language. There is an instant recognition of there product”.

Steven Addis: “It uses very strong visual ideas to bring the logo to life and define its relevance. The brochure cover is weak compared to the strong ideas of the other applications”.

Margo Chase: “The Omegatech identity is a clean, wellJdesigned symbol applied in a memorable and clever way that is strong and eyeJcatching.

The three paint brush image is particularly strong in terms of quick visual communication”.

Товарный знак – аббревиатура FC, составленная из начальных букв термина fillling company («наполняющая компания») и стилизованная в форме дозатора – предмета, широко используемого в парфюмерии и косметике, всем хорошо знакомого, легко узнаваемого и очень показательного для рассматриваемого класса товаров и услуг.

F&C Technology (2Jnd place, C1) Client: F&C Technology Project: to create a corporate identity for the company designing decorative cosmetics Designers: Icom; Victor Golubinov – art director (Russia) Date: 2005 Тhe objective has been to produce a logo for a modern, hiJtech company, marketing the readymade formulations, as well as perfumes and cosmetics for their consecutive production under the contractor’s trademarks. The solution is the trade logo – the acronym FC, combining the two initial letters of the term “Filling Company”, and stylized to shape a dispenser – an object broadly used in perfumery and cosmetics, wellJknown, easily recognized and very demonstrative for the class of goods and services considered.

Одинаковые для всех сотрудников униформа и удостоверения личности помогают организовать и выявить персонал в разных точках местности, так как они постоянно перемещаются по территории, от одного завода к другому. Project: redesign of corporate identity for micro thermal technologies Designers: Mary Hutchison Design LLC; Mary Chin Hutchison – art director (USA) Date: 2005 A comprehensive identity system was developed with reference thermal technologies and unify the presence of YehJChiang Technology Corp. as a global company. The logo was based on the radiant nature of thermal technologies as well ideas and information coming together and radiating out. A common uniform and identity card system help organize and distinguish personnel from the various locations as they traveled from factory campus to another. A cultural note: the number 8 is considered lucky in many Asian cultures, which was an added benefit of the logomark.

В основу разработки логотипа легла аббревиатура LS, стилизованная в виде лампочки, – наиболее легко считываемого символа осветительного прибора. Компания «АТ Десайн» занимается продажей расходных материалов для шелкографии, флексографии и цифровой печати. Требовалось разработать знак и фирменный стиль, отвечающий специфике деятельности компании. Также придумать узнаваемую цветовую гамму, которая отличала бы компанию от конкурентов. И, наконец, разработать фирменные элементы, которые можно активно использовать при создании сувенирной продукции и на других носителях фирменного стиля. Пожелание заказчика: использовать в стиле каплю, так как продажа краски является основным видом деятельности. Фирменный элемент – строгая капля – была взята из разработанного ранее логотипа и стала отличительным знаком компании. Она напоминает о том, что компания начинала с поставок на российский рынок полиграфических красок. Пластика знака легла в основу фирменного стиля компании и передалась его формам. Каждое направление деятельности компании кодировано своим отличительным цветом.

As the basis for the logo development, the acronym LS, shaped into a lightJbulb – the easiest recognizable lighting device – has been used. The logo is based on the same shaping principles and using the same graphic elements the trademark is using.

AT Design (short list, C1) Client: AT Design Project: to develop a logo and a corporate identity for the company Designers: AT Design; Boris Chubin – art director (Russia) Date: 2005 AT Design deal in consumables for silk screen printing, flexography and digital printing. It was necessary to develop a logo and a corporate identity relevant to the specifics of the company’s operations, as well as to invent an identifiable color scheme, which would render the company distinct from its competitors. And, finally, they also needed to develop corporate elements, which could be actively used in making souvenirs and other corporate identity carriers. In their identity the company wanted to use the symbol of a drop, since paintJselling is the major company’s activity. The corporate element – a strict drop, has been taken from the previously developed logo and become a distinguishing symbol of the company. It reminds of the fact that the company started out to present the Russian market with polygraphic paints. The plastics of the logo served basis for the company’s corporate identity and translated into its outline. Each field of the company’s activity is coded in its distinct color.

Требовалось внедрить новый дизайн, вызывающий ощущение, которое заметно бы отличалось от восприятия среднестатистических «пыльных» коммуникаций соперничающих брендов. Решение состояло в том, чтобы использовать современные иллюстрации вместо фотографий продукции, чтобы достичь видимости духа времени, с целью впечатлить молодых архитекторов и дизайнеров по интерьерам, – они любят стиль iPod и понятные простые слова. Целью было создание виртуального мира архитекторов и дизайнеров по интерьеру – предоставить им мир, где они могли бы воплотить свой творческий потенциал с помощью Best of Contract. It was important to implant a look and feel that is conspicuous different to the average «dusted» communication of the competitive brands. The solution was to unit used modern illustrations instead of product photography to reflect a «zeitgeist»Jrelevant picture to impress young architects and fashionJorientated interior designers – they love iPodJStyle and clean white worlds. The aim was the creation of the virtual architect and interior designer’s world – to give them a world where they can realize their creative ideas and projects on a virtual level with the products of Best of Contract.

Задача заключалась в обеспечении для мирового сообщества яркой презентации нового спортпрототипа на национальных и зарубежных автосалонах. Начертание изобразительного товарного знака (серп и молот – элементы герба Советского Союза, образующие латинскую букву R) и его цветовая гамма напоминают о революциях, происходивших в России. Для презентационных полиграфических и электронных материалов была создана 3DJмодель гоночного автомобиля, так как на момент проекта сам автомобиль еще не был готов.

The objective boiled down to providing a vivid presentation of a new sportJprototype to the global community in the national and foreign motor shows. The outline of the visual trademark (the sickle and the hammer – as in the USSR coatJofJarms – forming the Latin R) and its color scheme remind of the revolutions of Russia’s past. The new identity system communicates in a very dynamic and successful way the major benefit Scan Turbo has to offer its clients: fast, uncomplicated service and assistance around the world... at any time. The use of iridescent paper and special metallic effects underlines the futuristic and hiJtechnical approach of the company.

Rotek, средняя по размерам компания, поставщик высокоскоростных малогабаритных двигателей, нуждалась в новом позиционировании, чтобы добиться успеха в ситуации возрастающей конкуренции среди поставщиков дешевой продукции из Азии. Отличительные черты – качество, высокотехнологичность, ноуJхау и выполнение решений по специальному заказу – должны были быть объединены в визуальных компонентах нового коммуникационного материала. Цифровое написание и специальные цветовые эффекты были использованы с целью создания визуального впечатления виртуального рождения моторного двигателя, чтобы внедрить визуальный ключ, который транслирует аспекты высокотехнологичности, лучшего качества, силы и основной черты продукта – долгого срока службы. The characteristic values “quality”, “highJtech”, “knowJhow” and “customJmade solutions” should be integrated in the visual components of the new communication material. Digital composing and special color effects were used to create a visual impression of the virtual birth of a motor drive to implant a KeyJVisual that transports the aspects: hiJtechnology, best quality, strength and the main core of the product durability. Special metallic effects and a strong color system are responsible for the unmistakable presentation of the new productJline and Rotek’s new identity for the future.

Thomas Marine Consultants (short list, C1) Client: Thomas Marine Consultants Project: corporate identity for an engineering company Designers: Braue Branding & Corporate Design; Kai Braue – creative director, Marcel Robbers – art director (Germany) Date: 2006 In this case we had to show coastal engineering on the highest quality level from a company which is based on the knowledge of Uwe Thomas – a well known icon in the coastal engineering industry. The main photography is based on industry shots with focusing on Uwe Thomas as leading and directing part during the construction and planning of coastal engineering projects all over the world – this persistent picture world visualizes the companies quality cores “experience, skills and competence by Uwe Thomas included”.

The high technical level and pretension of the company is pushed by silver color parts in logo and print design combined with stylish typography – the individuality visually transported by special paper formats, cutouts and embossing.

Название бара – производное от марки аутентичного ликера, который изготавливается в Задаре (Хорватия) на протяжении десятилетий. Хотя клиент настаивал на использовании существующего логотипа, дизайнерам студии удалось убедить его в том, что стоит использовать вишню как лейтмотив. Было решено также обратиться к традиции, которая скрывается за именем Maraschino: в фирменном стиле использованы старинные иллюстрации, которые отражают дух того времени, когда ликер был впервые произведен.

Bar’s name refers to a authentic liqueur which has been produced in Zadar area (Croatia) for decades. Although client insisted on keeping the existing logotype, we tried to make the most out of the “cherry” by using it as a lightJmotive through all the material, and also to put an accent to tradition that stands behind the name Maraschino by reaching to the archive of old illustrations that vividly reflect the spirit of the time this liqueur was first made.

Компания была образована десять лет назад группой местных предпринимателей. Переход от статуса партнерства к корпорации повлек за собой ряд проблем, и в 2005 г. компания Domo решила обновить свой фирменный стиль. Базируясь на слогане «Дом домашних принадлежностей», был разработан радостный и веселый бренд, который к тому же имел дружественные и не выдуманные отношения с потребителями. Оптимистичный дизайн логотипа объемен, динамичен и ярок. Шутливые полосатые шары сразу стали запоминающимися элементами компании. Domo is a leading electronics and white goods retailer in Romania, developed by a group of local entrepreneurs over the past 10 years. Marking the transition from entrepreneurship to corporation as well as facing a tougher competition, in 2005 Domo decided to refresh its identity. On the positioning “home of home appliances”, Brandient designed a brand full of life and joy, having a pleasant and not pretentious relationship with the customer. The optimistic design of the logo is spatial, dynamic and colorful, and the playful striped balls became quickly a memorable brand property.

Jurymen’ comments: Jason Smith: “Good vibrant use of color, friendly photography, and fun signage, gives DOMO an inviting consumer feel”.

Bill Gardner: “The balls of this logo help spell the name of the company but also play out the playfulness of the company in a conservative way.

The flagship blue and green are carried out i a bold way on the interiors of the store but the whimsical balls continue to appear as well. The ball is a metaphor to me for the simplicity and straight forward nature of the product”.

ЧайноJкофейное общество «Гильдия» – это сеть магазинов, предлагающих широкий ассортимент высококачественных сортовых продуктов: развесного чая, кофе, сладостей.

The Guild, a tea and coffee community, is a network of specialized stores, offering broad range of high quality profiled products – loose tea, coffee and sweets. An accompanying field for Guild stores is the retail of tea and coffee crockery and utensils used in the making and consumption of tea and coffee, and retail of nearJtea souvenir and gift products.

Лучшие традиции купеческого предпринимательства начала XX века нашли свое отражение в оформлении фирменного стиля, упаковки и организации коммерческого пространства. Построение нового бренда началось с разработки названия, призванного вызывать статный благородный образ надежной, уверенной, ответственной компании. Дизайн интерьера и экстерьера магазинов, а также дизайн упаковочной продукции и форменной одежды персонала выдержаны в стиле эпохи; специальным образом подобраны материалы и элементы оформления магазинов, в написании логотипа, а также при оформлении вывесок, витрин, указателей, табличек и упаковки используются шрифты, характерные для того времени. Для оформления интерьера были также разработаны и изготовлены уникальные деревянные скульптуры – «чайные человечки». Их присутствие в антураже магазина добавляет ноту мифичности и сказочности в общую эмоциональную атмосферу интерьера, оживляет его, делает обитаемым. The best customs of the merchant entrepreneurship of the early 20th century found reflection in the corporate design, packaging and commercial space layout. Building a new brand started with the development of a title, which would bring up a stately noble image of a trustworthy, confident and reliable company, establishing their activities upon the observance and the development of the best customs of the merchant entrepreneurship of the early 20th century.

The interior and exterior design of the stores, as well as that of packaging and personnel uniforms, are all stylized to the sense of epoch; elements and materials used in decoration of stores have been specially selected, typeface of the logo, as well as the decoration of shop signs, showcases, signage, plates and packaging are using the fonts typical of the time. To design the interior the unique wooden statuettes of “teaJfolk” were developed. Their presence in the layout of the store adds a note of myth, a sense of a fairy tale to the general emotional composition of the interior, invigorates it and makes it habitable.

The use of the one color application here works well for a product as exotic yet as base as tea. The illustrations tie well to the wordmark which has an undefinable far off quality”.

Будучи опытной и дальновидной компанией, «Азбука вкуса» требовала последних стратегических разработок и креативных технологий. Требовалось дать совет по эксплуатации и оптимизации мест расположения магазинов с целью получения максимальной прибыли.

As a sophisticated and forward looking company, Azbuka Vkusa requires the latest strategic thinking and practical creativity. Their briefs require an ability to advise and direct on exploiting and optimizing high density city sites and ensuring maximum returns from different location and building formats.

Leva Nova (шортJлист, С2) Заказчик: частный предприниматель Проект: нейминг и создание бренда для бутика коллекционной одежды Дизайнеры: Zebra design branding; Андрей Митин – артJдиректор, Евгений Митин (Россия) Год: 2006 В связи с расширением бизнеса и приобретением собственных торговых площадей частный предприниматель решил создать свою торговую марку. Он занимается подбором и продажей коллекционной одежды, обуви и аксессуаров всемирноизвестных торговых марок и домов мод. В дальнейшем под этой маркой возможно развитие ресторанного и туристического бизнеса. Знак очень сдержанный, простой и лаконичный. Его индивидуальность заключена в оригинальном начертании литер. Буквы Е и А имеют идентичное начертание и отличаются лишь ориентацией.

The entrepreneur selects and sells collection clothes, footwear and accessories of the global trademarks and fashion houses. Later on the identity may develop into the restaurant and tourism business. The logo is moderate, simple and laconic. Its individuality is based on the original letter outline. The letters E and A are outlined identically while differently oriented.

Сюрреалистический значок, объединивший пресловутые мужские «вредные привычки» – хороший табак, удобную трубку, чашечку ароматного кофе и полное отсутствие суеты, получил развитие в стиле цвета табачного дыма и философской полосатости: там, за стенами бара – суета, здесь – полная благодати и лени атмосфера сибаритства, комфорта и удовольствия.

The surrealistic logo adjoining the notorious “vices” of men – good tobacco, a convenient pipe, a cup of flavorous coffee and the perfect peace – is further developed through the stylized tobacco smoke color and the philosophic striped pattern: there, beyond the walls of the bar, is the bustle of the mall, here is the graceful and lazy atmosphere of sybaritism, comfort and pleasure. Dixis (шортJлист, C2) Заказчик: Dixis Проект: разработка фирменного стиля для дилера мобильных телефонов Дизайнеры: SCG London; Джон Данлоп – артJдиректор, Надин Леблонд, Камилла Франкис (Великобритания) Год: Dixis, один из основных дилеров мобильных телефонов в России, хотел изменить свой бренд. Основанный в 1996 г., Dixis на сегодняшний день имеет больше 300 торговых точек в более чем двадцати городах России. Established more in 1996, Dixis have more than 300 outlets in over 20 cities in Russia. They required a robust and effective concept to help further fast expansion and optimize their share of rapidly expanding Russian mobile phone market.

The task was to refine and develop their brand identity and create a model retail format. Design concept specifications are highly modular to enable flexible fast fit out to meet different market criteria, from a limited graphic upgrade to a premium city flagship.

A modern, highly stylized and fresh logotype, having on mind powerful presence consistent across media, was created. The desired user experience: people encountering Zine were to experience a distinct brand personality in all communication channels without media breaks.

The logo reflects the activity sphere of the company – a network of tuning centers. The colorJscheme and the typeface solutions of the corporate identity express the positioning of the center (“serious toys for serious people”), thus rendering the store apart from the competitors, who, in their visual images, utilize the theme of a “sport car” – vivid blatant colors and aggressive graphics. This Portuguese group decided to rebrand its business with the purpose of achieving growth across all the segments it serves through raised customer awareness of its inherent service quality. “Urbanos – we make it possible”. The new brand communicates the idea of deep efficiency and professionalism stemming from the integration of the entire range of services any customer can obtain from the business and its associated group.

Designers: Brandient; Cristian “Kit” Paul – creative director (Romania) Date: 2002 Rebranding of a company called previously humanresources.ro, with an impressive portfolio of webJbased HR applications, but little recognition on the local (Romanian) market. The generic name and the poorlyJdesigned corporate identity were not doing justice to a strong professional & entrepreneurial culture. A new name that was instantly embraced by the whole organisation: Smartree, was created. The brand positioning “oxygen for business” and the outstanding logotype, designed with an embedded “digital tree”, completed the core of brand identity. The whole corporate identity was designed to convey relaxation and “oxygenation”, but still talking business.

The coherent positioning and brand rhetoric inspired the employees to take it further (e.g. they act with “smartitude”) and thus the organization became a brand builder.

Gutta (в переводе с латинского – капля) была взята за основу символа компании. В дальнейшем эта идея трансформировалась в символ «пейсли» («турецкий огурец») каплевидной формы, использующийся как элемент оформления на банданах, ставших модным в XIX веке символом свободы в творческой и неформальной среде. Lagutta Grey (3Jrd place, С3) Client: Lagutta Grey Project: to develop a corporate identity for an advertising and design agency Designers: Lagutta Grey; Maxim Buzin – art director (Russia) Date: 2006 The task was to create a positive and energetic image transmitting the idea of inner freedom of the team and, alongside, to enable it to reflect the development of the studio in future. “Gutta” – Latin for “drop”, has been taken for the basis of the company’s symbol. Further on, the idea transformed into the symbol of dropJlike paisley (a Turkish cucumber), used as a pattern to decorate bandanas, which had become in the 19th century a fashionable symbol of freedom in creativity and informality. The division between the brand and the subJbrand with the colon and the color provides the company with the opportunity to emerge in the new activity sectors.

Участники системы предлагают потребителям различные скидки (дисконтные карты), розыгрыши и призы. Слоган системы: «При покупке – три уступки». Для системы был разработан логотип, использующий знаки препинания и визуализирующий слоган системы. Визуальная лаконичность и жизнерадостность – ключевые свойства символа, который должен поднимать настроение потребителям. Помимо логотипа в стиле применяются знаки препинания (часть логотипа) в виде дополнительного графического элемента (цветные круги).

Dadada (short list, C3) Client: Slavin Project: corporate identity for a customer support program Designers: Zebra design branding; Andrey Mitin – art director (Russia) Date: 2005 It was necessary to create simple, democratic and friendly customer support imagery, designed to be perceived by a broad target audience. System participants offer their customers various bonuses (discount cards), lotteries and prizes. The slogan of the system goes: As you buy – we give in thrice. For this system a logo has been developed, using punctuation marks and visualizing the system’s slogan. The visual laconism and buoyancy are the key features to the symbol, which should boost the customer’s spirits. Beside the logo, the identity uses punctuation marks (part to the logo) as an additional graphic element (color circles).

Будучи единой национальной государственной компанией, EDP оказалась социально и экономически выгодным решением, так как она создала единую сеть снабжения электроэнергией всего населения страны. В течение длительного времени компания EDP имела возможность извлекать выгоду из своей монополии на поставки электроэнергии по всей Португалии, однако с либерализацией рынка у нее быстро появились конкуренты и ей пришлось прилагать больше усилий для привлечения и удержания клиентов, а эта задача сильно осложнялась имиджем недоступной и непроницаемой бюрократической компании. EDP was created in Portugal in1976 through the integration of 13 separate regional businesses.

As one national state company, EDP provided positive social and economic national benefits by developing a single electricity grid and the supply of power to almost all the population. EDP long enjoyed a monopolistic position for the supply of electricity across Portugal, yet with market liberalization it started to fast face the challenge of competition – requiring it to do more to attract and retain its customers; a goal much hindered by its brand reputation as a distant and impenetrable bureaucracy. EDP has expanded outside Portugal into Spain and Brazil and today is the seventh largest electricity company in Europe.

Through a research programme that incorporated qualitative and quantitative data from all stakeholders together with competitor brand benchmark research across Europe, a differentiated brand position based on the idea of “nearness” was defined, underpinned by the brand values of simplicity, confidence and social responsibility.

The brand position and brand values were used to guide the creative development of EDP’s core brand communications, captured by the energetic, warm smile that forms their brand mark: a sincere, spontaneous and friendly human gesture that projects EDP’s customer service ambitions and provokes business change. It contrasts markedly with their previous symbol: a blue turbine.

Models of wings, webbed feet, beaks, and tummies with bellybuttons have been designed, and each staff member constructed his/her own penguin to become their symbol, each of them becoming an image of the Penguin Pictures.

Концепция в целом оформлена в духе приключенческих фильмов о Джеймсе Бонде 60Jх годов. Все иллюстрации выполнены в виде кадров из фильма, в которых уверенные в себе и одетые в одинаковом стиле братья выглядят, как герои кино. Не вызывает сомнений, что наши герои – парни не промах. The overall idea has been built in the spirit of 1960’s action movies such as James Bond. All layouts have been built as an movie shooting scene where some selfJconfident and uniformed brothers behave as heroes. There can be no doubt that our heroes are real dudes.

A corporate identity of the company, fully representing the specific features of the company’s courier activities – professionalism and urgency of shipment, upJtoJtheJminute servicing, openness and friendliness – has been developed.

Nordsee Pflege (шортJлист, C3) Заказчик: NordseePflege Проект: разработка фирменного стиля для дома престарелых Дизайнеры: Braue Branding & Corporate Design; Кай Брауэ – креативный директор, Марсель Робберс – артJдиректор, Анника Шмидт (Германия) Год: 2005 Интересно было принять участие в работе, в ходе которой требовалось преодолеть обычное представление о доме престарелых. Нужно было показать его обитателей как сообщество интересующихся жизнью людей со своими планами на будущее и собственными интересами. Решение заключалось в выборе сильной позитивной цветовой гаммы, органичного волнообразного дизайна и динамичных фотоматериалов, олицетворяющих вновь обретенные интерес и вкус к жизни. Пенсионеры всегда показаны деятельными и никогда – одинокими или забытыми, что подчеркивает главную идею этого заведения: дать пожилым людям новый дом и новый взгляд на жизнь, полный надежды, будущего и безопасности, – с любовью и заботой.

Имя компании уникально и созвучно слову «бренд». Логотип был создан в русле обещания компании создавать «признаки ценности»: четкий, твердый и в то же время простой и непритязательный. Создание фирменного стиля подобно процессу развития дуба из маленького желудя: желудь становится символом, который используется в логотипе, в стационарной рекламе и на webJсайте. Благодаря искусному дизайну весь имидж одновременно несет в себе идеи простоты и совершенства и одновременно олицетворяет знание и обмен опытом.

As the “shoemaker’s shoes” story goes, the most difficult assignment was to create and design its own identity. The name is unique and instantly traceable back to “brand”. The logo was created in line with the brand promise “Signs of value”: dignified and firm, yet simple and understated.

Building a brand is like a journey from the little acorn to the oak tree, so the acorn became the symbol designed in the logo, on stationery and website. The whole identity was conceived to breath at the same time simplicity and sophistication and to inspire knowledge and consulting with a twist of design.

We wanted to show the residents as a group of vital people with future visions and individual interests. Froggy (2Jое место, С4) Заказчик: ИВС Проект: редизайн торговой марки компании, разработка фирменного стиля Дизайнеры: Zebra design branding; Андрей Митин – артJдиректор, Евгений Митин (Россия) Год: 2004 Froggy – это торговая марка компьютеров, собранных из комплектующих лучших мировых производителей. В 2004 г. компания «ИВС» решила обновить марку, повысить ее конкурентоспособность и увеличить долю рынка. Было решено оставить прежнее имя: оно достаточно индивидуальное и нетрадиционное для компьютеров и в то же время простое и понятное для целевой аудитории. Типичные потребители – это люди, которые хотят иметь компьютер, но не разбираются в них. Раньше у компании Froggy был рисованный мультипликационный персонаж. Сейчас изображение логотипа стало максимально простым. Простая форма имеет многоуровневую смысловую нагрузку. Основное значение нового логотипа – лягушачья лапка, рука помощи в сложном компьютерном мире, которую лягушонок готов протянуть каждому. Но кроме этого логотип можно рассматривать как дерево (принцип систематизации продукции) или контакты микросхем (компьютерная тематика). Некоторые видят в нем известный символ USB. Оранжевый цвет говорит о том, что лягушка экзотическая. На основе нового логотипа был разработан новый фирменный стиль, концепция упаковки и принципы оформления магазинов.

The peculiarity of the Froggy computers is that they are offered assembled. The customer doesn’t have to be an expert in computers or know the computer terminology; he can just say what for he needs the computer, and the company experts will choose the optimal configuration for him. In 2004 the IVS Company decided to renovate the brand and to increase its competitiveness and its market share. It was decided to keep the name. In our opinion, it is fairly individual and unconventional for computers, simple and clear for the target audience. The typical consumer is a person, who wants to have a PC, yet having no idea what it should be. Previously the Froggy Company had a cartoon character for the logo. Today the graphic image of the logo is extremely simple. The simple form has multiJlevel connotations. The main implication of the new logo – a frog’s pad – is the helping hand in the complex computer world the Froggy is ready to reach you with. Besides, the logo can be viewed as a tree – the principle of the product systematization – or as microchip pins – computer theme. Some compare it to the wellJknown symbol of USB. The color of orange translates the exotics of the frog. Based on the new logo, a new corporate identity, packaging concept and shop interior layout have been developed. Result: The brand name gained customer trust and became better known in the regional market. The increase of the regional market share took place.

Имидж Dutchwaters современный и гибкий. Современный – благодаря светлой харизме и использованию легкоузнаваемых значков для обозначения групп продуктов. Гибкий – благодаря использованию элементов дизайна в духе последних веяний моды. Отзывы членов жюри: Марго Чейз: «Мне нравятся эти ритмичность и доступность, использованные в дизайне Dutchwaters. Developed and designed by cool Dutchmen, who have full control over the water for many decades (or even ages), which a complete own style as a results. Dutchwaters identity is modern and flexible. Modern, because of the “blonde” charisma and use of intelligible icons for the different product groups. Flexible, because of the use of designs related to the latest trends in fashion.

Jurymen’ comments: Margo Chase: “I love this kinetic and approachable system for Dutchwaters. The mark and logotype clean and simple, but the applications add a wonderful layer of fun and whimsy that make the company seem smart and design savvy”.

Bill Gardner: “Great use of space pattern and shape to play out the various products. The pattern tabs in color on the right edge of the letterheads reflect the subdued background pattern in use. Было необходимо разработать единый подход в создании упаковки и рекламы с целью продвижения наиболее важных решений из портфолио Smartree. Эти два типа решений в духе фирменного стиля Smartree были буквально «упакованы» студией. Довольно быстро новая упаковка привлекла к себе внимание рынка к продукции компании. Концепция дизайна была реализована как на уровне упаковки, так и на уровне рекламы, в сопутствующих рекламных материалах – брошюрах, руководствах пользователя, премиальных товарах и так далее. Active in payroll and personnel outsourcing and in HR software solutions, Smartree had built a remarkable practical solutions portfolio. The challenge was to develop an integrated packaging & communication campaign to promote the most important solutions of the Smartree portfolio – payroll services and human resources management software. The two solutions in a modern package inspired by the Smartree brand were literally “packed” by the studio. In a short while, the packages made the difference between the company offer and the rest of the market, successfully drawing market attention over it. The communication concept was implemented both at package level and at external communication level, through collateral sales materials: preJsales brochures, user’s manuals, premiums etc.

Заказчик потратил немалые средства на рекламу в течение последних лет, однако, если не учитывать возросшую известность названия, бренд так и не стал популярным. Старый стиль был очень скучным и казался скорее сухим, чем подвижным и ярким. Было предложено полностью переделать дизайн, сохранив прежнее название, но применив более живописный и приятный стиль. Результатом стала серия запоминающихся упаковок, в дизайне которых присутствует тема животных, благодаря чему используются наиболее привлекательные цвета и что выглядит особенно удачно на увеличенных изображениях в оформлении грузовиков.

The old identity was very arid, suggesting rather dryness than fluidity & color. It was proposed to redesign the whole brand identity around the same name, but with a colorful and friendly approach. The result is a range of eyeJcatching packages, playing around the “animal theme” for the best source of inspiration for best colors. Not to mention the larger than life images on the trucks’ livery.

В основу фирменного стиля были положены основные темы из дизайна упаковки, в частности олени в лучах восходящего солнца – символ движения и жизненной энергии. В качестве центрального элемента логотипа использована стилизованная корона, в которой прослеживаются мотивы северных орнаментов. The second stage of work was to develop a corporate identity based on the main themes of the packaging design, in particular – the reindeer in the dawning sunbeams – on the symbol of motion and vitality. A stylized crown has been chosen as the central element for a logo, where the motifs of the northern ornaments can be traced.

With a clean, minimalist approach and the rather unexpected use of feathers, the package suggest naturally the feeling of light and gentle and supports the verbal identity. Modern and atypical, the package is a pleasant surprise for the Romanian consumer, who is open to innovation.

Extending the current Teaology brand by establishing a new line of organic Hot Teas and supporting collateral materials. A comprehensive identity system was developed through a kit of parts that includes a color palette, photography style, templates, and typography. Thus, enabling rapid expansion of product line and ease of new product development and launch.

Оригинальный подход к производству фирменных молочных продуктов вывел региональную компанию Albalact в число пяти крупнейших игроков на румынском рынке. На этом этапе компании нужна новая философия, новый стиль и имидж, которые способствовали бы быстрому и успешному развитию. В новом фирменном стиле использованы элементы, олицетворяющие свежесть, природу и заботу о качестве. Они выражены в живом сочетании, объединяющем сердце, коровье вымя и льющееся молоко. Ассоциацию с природой и свежестью усиливают зеленый, белый и голубой цвета.

At this stage, the company needed a new philosophy, a new identity, and a new image to support the quick and successful evolution. The new corporate identity engages subtly the elements of freshness, nature and care for quality. The spirited mixture between a heart, a cow udder and a milk flow reflects them, while the design uses green, white and blue to endorse the association with nature and freshness. Czech Donors Forum (1Jst place, С5)

Задача форума финансирующих организаций (FD) – поддержать организованную благотворительную деятельность в Чешской Республике и предоставить поддержку деятельности финансирующих организаций. Самым сложным было сделать более популярным форум и его цели, представив более понятными и узнаваемыми его организацию, деятельность и продукцию. Новый визуальный стиль вытекает из логотипа форума, основанием которого является изображение планеты. Крупные и малые окружности являются коммуникативной средой, способствующей узнаванию логотипа и стиля, и в то же время выделяющей символ из общего фона. Основной принцип новой концепции – «упорядоченная переменчивость», выраженная в размерах, формах и их сочетаниях (их относительном пространственном расположении), как указано в четких инструкциях соответствующего руководства. Это добавляет игривости и современности, а также гибкости, которая так необходима фирменному стилю. Визуально форум финансирующих организаций представлен в виде двух основных групп – группы финансирующих организаций и корпоративной группы, каждая из которых имеет собственный дочерний бренд. Концепцию украшает использование современных шрифтов (Fishmonger и RePublic). В донорском сегменте в заголовках используется Fishmonger, а в тексте RePublic, а в корпоративном сегменте – наоборот, что также способствует их узнаванию и различимости.

Всегда знаешь, что эти частицы принадлежат единому сообществу, несмотря на разные методы применения».

Project: corporate identity for membership association serving grant makers Designer: Lucia Kocmanova (Czech) Date: 2006 The mission of The Donors’ Forum (FD) is to support the development of organized philanthropy in the Czech Republic and to provide a support base for donors. The stiffest challenge was to improve the perception of FD and its mission by making its organization, activities and products more understandable and easier to identify with.

The new visual identity flows from the FD logo, which uses a planet symbol as its foundation.

Circles and smaller circles become a distinct communication medium that aid identification with the logo/identity, also helping it to standout from logo and identity clutter. A basic principle of the new system is its “ordered variability” in terms of the size of the shapes used and their composition (spatial relationship to one other), as established by clear guidelines in the corresponding manual.

This adds an element of playfulness, modernity and needed flexibility to the identity. The Donors’ Forum is segmented visually into two basic groups, donor and corporate segments, each with its own subJbrands. The entire system benefits from the use of modern fonts (Fishmonger and RePublic). For the donor segment, Fishmonger is used for titles and RePublic for text. For the corporate segment the opposite rule applies. This again aids visual identification and differentiation.

Jurymen’ comments: Bill Gardner: “The concept of a donors forum is played out by the particle field of dots coming together to create a useful whole in this application. The trick used in the logo showing a cosmos of supporters is able to be applied to other graphics in unique ways without cannibalizing the identity. I know these pieces belong together despite the varied methods of application”.

В основе концепции ночного клуба ISO лежит идея самоформирования внутренней среды, что означает использование интерьеров только в качестве фона для проецирования фотоизображений происходящих в клубе событий. Фирменный стиль клуба поддерживает эту концепцию, создавая четкую структуру графических элементов, лежащую в основе разработки промопродукции клуба. Ограниченная цветовая палитра отлично работает, и хорошо, что лого воспринимается в первую очередь за счет своей фурнитуры. The corporate identity of the club supports the concept, creating a tight structure of graphic elements, underlying the development of the club’s promoJgoods.

Jurymen’ comments: Gary Horton: “I selected this project as it has a very interesting simplicity. The limited colour pallet works very well and it is good to see the brand logo rolled out into the environment through furniture. The sinage system seems very staight forward and effectyive with the introduction of iconography”.

Тема 2006 года: Play – City – Space («Игра – город – пространство»), и участникам необходимо изучить роль игры в городе и предложить новые подходы и решения для использования городской среды. В качестве образца для разработки стиля проекта была выбрана детская игра в классы. Таким образом, был создан логотип и живописный webJсайт, а в будущем в этом же стиле будет оформлена наружная реклама – в виде классиков, прямо на тротуаре. Отзывы членов жюри: Марго Чейз: «Фирменный стиль GP06 выглядит важным и игривым одновременно. Игра в классики создает принцип организации и выгодно отличает данный проект от других». GP06 (3Jrd place, С5) Client: The Netherlands Architecture Funds (SFA) and The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) Project: identity program for nonJprofit event Designers: Cubicle; Miritte BenJYitzchak – art director (Netherlands) Date: 2005 Groups’ Portraits is a biannual initiative, which aims to provide a platform for young designers to present their vision of the urban environment.

The theme for 2006 is PlayJCityJSpace, and the participants are required to study the role of play in the city and form new approaches and experiences to the use of the city. I chose the Hopscotch game as a source of inspiration for the project’s identity. There were created a logo, a playful website and will later base the project’s street advertising on Hopscotch, creating publicity to be directly applied to the pavement.

Jurymen’ comments: Margo Chase: “The GPO6 identity makes the initiative seem relevant and but playful. The hopscotch squares add a modularity to the communications while keeping the identity unied”.

Michael Gais: “I have been on the website to see more about the background. You see, the sign caught me interest. Otherwise the presentation of the corporate design is too weak. A clear and strong sign, recognizible, for flexible use, animates to participate in the event. To see the quality of the logo you have to know something of the background. The structure of a well known childJgame gets very easy in our mind and stays there. What do you want more from a good corporate design.

Russia Today (шортJлист, C5) Заказчик: «ТВ Новости» Проект: разработка логотипа и фирменного стиля для круглосуточного спутникового международного новостного телевидения (телеканала Russia Today) Дизайнеры: Михаил Пузырев – артJдиректор, Алексей Маслов (Россия) Год: 2005 Логотип, по настоянию руководства телеканала, был выполнен строго в шрифтовом варианте аббревиатуры, цветовое решение и тема полосы характерны для стиля компании, в том числе и для onJairJоформления телеканала. Ярко зеленый цвет был выбран, чтобы показать свежесть и оригинальность российского международного телеканала и уйти от стереотипов. Отзывы членов жюри: Гэри Хортон: «ПоJмоему, данный дизайн очень подходит этому продукту. Новостное вещание предполагает постоянное адресное обращение, прямой и сильный подход. Габи Сабо (Gabi Szabo) – знаменитая молодая румынская спортсменка, которая сделала успешную карьеру на чемпионатах мира и Олимпийских играх и считается одной из лучших спортсменок в истории Румынии. После окончания своей карьеры в 2004 г., возрасте двадцати девяти лет, она решила посвятить себя общественным делам и бизнесу. Компания Brandient разработала личный логотип Габи Сабо, который будет использоваться в лицензиях и франчайзинге. За основу логотипа была взята стилизованная подпись спортсменки. Ее личный webJсайт, выдержанный в минималистском стиле, оформлен с использованием фотографий моментов пересечения финишной прямой, ставших символом побед спортсменки, а на страницах сайта присутствует ее изображение.

Date: 2005 Gabi Szabo is a young Romanian sport celebrity who enjoyed a successful career as World and Olympic champion and is ranking as one the most celebrated athletes in the history. Shortly after retiring in 2004, at 29, she realized she has a longer race ahead of her in community and business. Brandient designed a proprietary Gabi Szabo logo to be eventually used in licensing and/or franchising businesses and inspired from her stylized handwritten signature. The personal website design is minimalistic, around her iconic “running & winning” pictures and the finishJline ribbon, and her personality brand is also outlined across various communication vectors like personal stationery.

Designers: Mikhail Puzyryov – art director, Alexey Maslov (Russia) Date: 2005 The logo, as insisted by the channel’s management, has been expressed in a strict typeface acronym, while the color scheme and the tape bind the entire identity, including the onJair channel’s appearance. The fresh green has been chosen, to show the freshness and the originality of the Russian international TV channel, departing from the stereotypes.

Jurymen’ comments: Gary Horton: “I have selected this project as it feels very appropriate for the product. As a news broadcaster it conveys a straight talking, direct and powerful approach. The brand has been rolled out well, it create a very concise and established brand identity”.

Steven Addis: “I chose the RT brand work because it is clean and aggressive. It positions the news team as persistent, powerful reporters”.

Задача: создание визуальной идентичности города, которая должна стать конкурентным преимуществом города в привлечении инвестиций, налаживании партнерских отношений, в становлении города как культурного центра, а также разработка четкого структурированного фирменного стиля и систем визуальных коммуникаций внутри города и за его пределами. Несмотря на инновационность поставленной задачи для российского рынка, конечный продукт оказался вполне типичным для сегодняшнего дня. В брендJбуке города Тольятти четко структурированы и описаны все графические константы фирменного стиля города. Товарный знак города Тольятти состоит из нескольких идентичных фигур – квадратов. Квадрат здесь выбран неслучайно, так как весь город расчленен на секторы (кварталы) именно квадратной формы, разнообъемность и цветовая вариативность тоже имеют свое обоснование (и не одно). Знак отражает и главные направления деятельности города, его жизнь, зонированность инфраструктуры, культурное наследие и амбиции. Именно стилистическое решение знака во многом сформировало весь стиль оформления визуальных коммуникаций города.

Despite the objective’s market novelty, the output turned out to be rather typical of today. The brand book of Togliatti clearly structures and describes all of the constants of the city’s graphic identity.

The trademark of the city is composed of several identical figures – squares. And this is not by chance, since the entire city is split into sectors (blocks) shaping squares; and the variety of the volume and the color also has its interpretation – and not just one. The logo also reflects the main fields of the city’s activities, its life, its functional zoneJbased infrastructure, its cultural heritage and ambitions. It is the graphic style of the logo to a great extent formed the entire style of the city’s visual communicative layout.

66 East – некоммерческий фонд и выставочный зал, ставящий своей целью показывать и выявлять и очевидные, и незаметные аспекты городской жизни. Разработанный стиль, включающий логотип, фирменные бланки, webJсайт и рекламу (флаерсы и плакаты), отражает интерес 66 East к архитектуре и городской среде благодаря использованным фрагментам архитектурных чертежей. Сайт в пределах своей общей структуры согласуется с дизайном флаерcов и плакатов проводящейся выставки, представляя собой динамичную параллель выставочному залу и рекламной кампании.

AMBA (шортJлист, C5) Заказчик: AMBA – Associacao dos Antigos Alunos do MBA da Universidade Nova de Lisboa Проект: корпоративный стиль ассоциации выпускников MBA Дизайнеры: MyBrand Consultants (Португалия) Год: 2005 Эта португальская ассоциация выпускников была создана в октябре 1983 г. небольшой группой выпускников MBA, с целью способствовать их личному и деловому взаимодействию, постоянному обучению и совершенствованию, а также для сохранения их связи с университетом. Необходимо было улучшить имидж ассоциации и выразить ее предназначение и поэтому было принято решение разработать и принять новый корпоративный стиль, основанный на принципах образования, сотрудничества и интернациональности. Центральной идеей нового стиля должно было стать сотрудничество. Три буквы А, образующие символ ассоциации, олицетворяют сильные связи между людьми, а использованные в символике цвета отражают многообразность и толерантность. Получившийся символ выглядит динамично и подвижно и в то же время строго и надежно.

Date: 2005 This Portuguese Аlumni Аssociation was created in October 1983, by a small group of MBA alumnus to help their personal and business networking, continuous learning and education as well as to maintain a connection with the university. The challenge was to raise its profile and communicate its purpose, the association decided to create and implement a new brand based on the principles of education, networking and internationalisation. The core idea of the new brand was based on “networking”. The three As that comprise the association’s symbol represent the strong connections between the individuals and the brand colours represent diversity and tolerance. The resulting brand look and feel is dynamic and fluid yet also rigorous and steady.

Designers: Cubicle; Miritte BenJYitzchak – art director (Netherlands) Date: 2004 66 East is a nonJprofit foundation and exhibition space dedicated to exposing and highlighting the experiential and implicit aspects of the urban environment. The identity design, which includes a logo, letterhead, website and advertising (flyers and posters), reflects 66 East’s interest in architecture and the urban environment by referring to architectural drawings. The website reflects the changing exhibitions in 66 East. The site relates to the flyer and poster design of the current exhibition within its permanent structure and therefore becomes a dynamic parallel of both the exhibition space and its public advertising.

Identity: Best of the Best 2006 ELA (шортJлист, C5) Заказчик: ELA Espacio Latinoamericano asbl Проект: разработка стиля для общества латиноамериканской культуры в Бельгии Дизайнеры: federicografia; Федерико Гарсиа – артJдиректор (Бельгия) Год: 2004 ELA Espacio Latinoamericano – бельгийская организация, созданная латиноамериканской диаспорой Бельгии. Для логотипа был найден графический элемент – символ, существовавший на всем американском континенте в течение почти 5 тыс. лет, объединяющий все народы Америки. Это двойная спираль, известная у ацтеков под названием «шонекуилли» («синий змей»), являвшаяся символом грома, и богини плодородия, то есть жизни. Шрифт был выбран без засечек. В логотипе изображена особая буква L и строчные буквы E и A, которые выглядят как прописные, благодаря объединяющей заглавной L. В остальном тексте использован шрифт Verdana. Оранжевый цвет символизирует энергичность, креативность и дружественность латиноамериканского сообщества в Бельгии, а серый – надежность организации.

ELA (short list, C5) Client: ELA Espacio Latinoamericano asbl Project: identity program for Cultural Latin American community in Belgium Designers: federicografia; Federico Garcia – art director (Belgium) Date: 2004 ELA Espacio Latinoamericano is a Belgian institution conformed by the LatinJAmerican community living in Belgium. For logo it was found a graphical element, a preJhispanic symbol present all over the continent since almost 5000 years ago, a symbol that bound the whole peoples of America.

Such element was a double spiral in known by the Aztecs as the Xonecuilli (the Blue Warm), which symbolises the thunder and the Mother of Fertility: life. The sans serif font was chosen for a logo. It was designed a distinctive letter L and then the lower case E and A appeared as upperJcase characters, thanks to the binding presence of the upperJcase tailored L. The institutional secondary typography used is Verdana. Orange color is used to connote the energetic, creative and friendly presence of the LatinJAmerican community in Belgium, grey connotes a trustworthy organisation.
