NOTE
ummer is over and it’s officially autumn. No matter what you do all summer, you still dread the day it comes to an end. Autumn comes with its uncertainties… it makes you wonder a lot. With the morning breeze you feel alive, but with its gloominess you feel lost on the planet. For some odd reason, it gets to you. You become gloomy yourself no matter how hard you try! Do seasonal changes affect you emotionally? Or is it simply the fact it psychologically reminds you of school and its dilemmas? It sort of ties you down; bringing you back to earth after a few months of running around barefoot on the beach or travelling abroad to new and exciting places. It makes you feel cornered back to reality when you want to live the magical summer moments forever! I have no clue if I’m making sense or not; it’s just how I feel! Personally, I wish it never existed.

FASHION Obsession
When it comes to fashion, you can hardly define it! Fashion is something you By: Mohamed Maher don’t just wear or talk @MoeMSamed about, it’s something you feel. If you look up the word “Fashion” on Wikipedia, you will find that “Fashion is a general term for a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing” BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH… Whatever, we shouldn’t be listening to Wikipedia about what they think of Fashion. Fashion is identified by people who lived their lives obsessing about it. So here are the quotes of our favourite fashion designers, style icons and fashionistas that have really experienced fashion more than anyone! “I have always believed that fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them, give them confidence”
- Yves Saint Laurent
“My look is attainable. Women can look like Audrey Hepburn by flipping out their hair, buying the large sunglasses, and the little sleeveless dresses.” -Audrey Hepburn “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” - Coco Chanel “When in doubt, wear red.” -Bill Blass “Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing.” -Alexander Wang
Some Like It Hot (1959) Jack Lemon, Marilyn Monroe Director: Billy Wilder
“If I’m going dancing, then I wear the highest heels with the shortest dress.” -Kate Moss “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” -Marilyn Monroe “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them” -Marc Jacobs “I like my money right where I can see it… hanging in my closet.” -Carrie Bradshaw

1 SPOT On t ime:
Although this might be affected by several factors in Cairo such as traffic; a modern day gent will make sure to arrive before you do and not keep you waiting. He also won’t complain if you keep him waiting (I guarantee you 30 minutes, after which manners might drop).
Gentleman THE MODERN DAY By: Ahmed Hassan

There is no room for extremists in gentlemen’s lounge. A modern day gentleman is open to the world, different ideas and is accepting of everyone and of changing times. He won’t bother you about getting a belly-button piercing or having a gay best friend.

Compliment s:
Even if you are a modern day woman looking for equal treatment, a gentleman will make sure to at least pay for a first date.
The day after a first date, before an important event and whenever you could possibly need him. You might ask yourself does ‘whatsapping’ count? No.

The higher the stiletto the sexier you look, however, the more risks walking. A modern day gentleman understands how hard it is to walk in those heels and will offer his arm for support.
Ab show:
Although it might be appealing to get a glance at his rockin’ body, a gentleman won’t have every display picture or Instagram post show off his body. He will keep you guessing and will only reveal what is necessary, when the time is right. IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2013

Autumn/fall 2013 make-up trends
By: Nourhan Yehia
LIKE FASHION, MAKE-UP TRENDS CHANGE FROM ONE SEASON TO THE OTHER. THIS AUTUMN/FALL 2013 MAKE-UP TRENDS ARE ABOUT LOOKING TRENDY AND NATURAL AT THE SAME TIME. THE MIX OF EARTHLY AND METALLIC TONES WITH INTRICATE EYELINER DETAIL HAS BEEN SEEN ON MANY RUNWAYS. STAY UP TO DATE WITH THESE FOUR MAKE-UP TIPS…
Strong Brows:
It’s all about bold and strong eyebrows that make a statement. Forget about your eyebrow pencil; use eyebrow powder instead and if you’re fortunate enough to have thick brows then a good brow comb and gel are adequate. Make sure they are close to your natural eye brows colour. You can get the powder, gel and brush in one kit “NYX Eyebrow cake powder”
Thin to Thick Eyeliner: A couple of shapes were featured this autumn/fall like the thin eyeliner, bold eyeliner and the smooth one. The trend this season is the thin to thick eyeliner it gives an attractive sexy look. You can do that easily with Maybelline “Thick and thin master duo” eyeliner that comes in more than one colour.
Metallic Eye Shadow or Eyeliner: Stay trendy and fashionable this autumn with metallic eye shadows! There is a wide collection of futuristic colours: metallic blue, gold, silver, sparkling bronze brown, green teal and surprisingly RED metallic shadow. The “Dior Bonne Etoile” and MAC red copper cream shadow are all you need to get the look.
Deep and Dark, Nude or Metallic Lips: Red color has made massive comeback this fall from Red wine to berry lips giving you such a gorgeous, juicy and sexy look. Nude shade lips will always be in and it matches perfectly with a retro or Smokey eyes look. Look fashion forward and futuristic with Metallic lipstick and subtle eye shadow. The new Estée Lauder lipstick collection has it all, as well as Giorgio Armani’s Kaleidoscope Collection. 14

IDENTITY’S ROYAL FASHION
THE
By: Akram Alnagdy From one royal house to the other, one clutch is gracing the wardrobes of princesses around the world. The Bottega Veneta Knot is both elegant and edgy and our favorite royal ladies know how to turn it from an understated compliment to a bold statement. The clutch is now an icon itself as it’s also popular among celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey who was spotted sporting hers to the premiere of her new film, The Butler. Queen Rania owns it in three colours and Crown Princess Victoria held it famously in front of her belly shortly after the announcement of her pregnancy. Crown Princess Mary was the one that debuted the clutch in the royal scene in 2010 at the wedding of Prince Nikolaos of Greece and later to attend the two ceremonies of the abdication and inauguration of King Willem-Alexander in the Netherlands this year. Mary was followed by many other princesses including Princess Charlene of Monaco who paired her clutch with her beige Akris dress.

Whether you’ll wear it with H&M dress for a morning look like Princess MetteMarit or with a couture gown and a tiara to attend a royal wedding like Princess Marie, the Knot will always be the perfect clutch. Get it in the colour you want from Beymen or opt for this Zara clutch for less!

hen thinking of fashion icons, you can’t help but think of unique styles and different characters that were portrayed so effortlessly through clothes. What made Marilyn Monroe an icon were her sex appeal and her style that matched every bit of that smoldering personality. All those icons are famous for a reason; they had an individual style. They weren’t just interested in fashion (and many of them weren’t) they were more interested in wearing what makes them feel good and look good. It wasn’t about showing off the latest trend, it was about being a unique individual. On every fashion website and in every magazine, you find endless articles about how to find your style and steps to take. I always found those to be interesting yet merely commercial. Style is not defined by a set of rules; in fact it is quite the opposite. It is defined by a person’s manners, who you are and what you want the world to see. There is a big difference between being trendy and being stylish. Being trendy is all about knowing what is in and what is out and putting an outfit together that follows that. On the other hand, being stylish is all about standing out yet with comfort and personality. Very few individuals can actually be called stylish because very few make the effort to wear clothes that exude personality, their personality. When you look at your old photos or even photos of celebrities and movies through-out the past ten or even twenty years, you will see that style is pretty much the same. It is very rare now to spot an original and personified style. Looking back all the way to the 20’s, 50’s, 70’s you can spot the huge difference in fashion and many people who till this day are considered fashion icons with everlasting style. Now, it’s very rare that you actually find a style icon, one that is unmatched and unique among all others. Lady gaga you say? The new Madonna! She’s all about crazy outrageous outfits that make as big of a news splash as she can get. Fashion designers cannot be blamed, for fashion always recycles old ideas and introduces them in a new way. It’s how you wear the clothes that matters. You can take a completely simple outfit and add just one touch of personality and it’s super stylish and fits perfectly. Even stars today mostly just wear looks off the runway. Sure, they look glamorous and fashionable but their style is influenced by what the designers have chosen for them not the other way around. Back then when stars had real individual style, they possessed such a great power over design houses and influenced their designs. They were more than just trend starters; they were muses and icons to be followed not just by the masses but by the fashion industry as well. Not to mention that style is greatly associated with image and whenever a celebrity tries to change their image, we see their style transform completely! That just proves how powerful style can be and how important it is to a person’s image. Take Miley
Cyrus for example, she completely transformed from the Hannah Montana sweet girl look to a wild punk rock and roll chick! She went under great public attention because of that transformation but very few people actually consider that she is a grown up now and she is finding her own style and that she was probably in a bubble of style that fit her Hannah character more than she was allowed to wear her own style.
“I am sincere in my preferences for men’s clothes – I do not wear them to be sensational…I think I am much more alluring in these clothes” -Marlene dietrich
Now I want you to take a look around you, whether at the people you already “You can acquire chic and know or at random elegance but style itself is a people at a restaurant rare thing.” -Irene Sharaff or a party; they all look pretty much the same. They will be stuck with the same brands, same trends and same safe approach to what looks good. It’s very rare when you see someone and compliment their STYLE not just their outfit. Style is more than just knowing how to pair items, it’s the ability to wear clothes and not have the clothes wear you. “You can acquire chic and elegance but style itself is a rare thing.” Irene Sharaff, costume designer circa 1962. Marlene dietrich (a German born actress and singer) who was infamous for her androgynous style once said “I am sincere in my preferences for men’s clothes – I do not wear them to be sensational…I think I am much more alluring in these clothes”. That represents a perfect example for knowing who you are and what really works for you and matches the image you want to portray. Style transcends trends of fashion and designer clothes, it’s beyond fabric, it’s an aura of personality. Why don’t you go through your wardrobe right now and look at all the items you have… how many items you’ve bought because every guy or girl seem to be wearing one? The striped monochrome pants, pastel tops, studded items… they all represent a trend but how many items truly represent you? It’s not just about the item, but its how you wear it, spice it up and even how you walk in it! If you manage to combine all of these elements together, then you will begin to get a sense of what your true style is. Only then will you truly stand out from all the trend clones that surround you and you might even influence some of them! IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2013

IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2013
Under the dramatic impact of pregnancy hormones, I decided that I want to actively save our planet from the destructive forces of industrialization, commercialization, and consumerism! As a good citizen of the world and a decent inhabitant of planet Earth, I wanted to give birth to my baby into a less depleted country! I bought cloth diapers instead of the commercial disposables that wickedly clog the universal earthly drains by unrecyclable synthetics! I also bought organic cotton onesies, towels, bibs, and slings! No more plastic bags! No more detergents and chemical cleaning materials! I carried a lot of genuine love and respect for nature and I wanted to pass on that reverence to my son! I truly believed in the wisdom that says “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children!” Fast forward three years later! Adam and I live in a bubble surrounded by utter ugliness and misery! The scent of tear gas and blood has crept in! The images of dead bodies, wounds, amputated body parts, blown up brains, and women wrapped up in black have become an integral part of our world! My 2-year old Adam knows what armored vehicles and coffins look like! He has heard gunshots and human shrieks during the night! He is aware of curfews! He also knows that men in uniforms stopped our car and searched his toys! It does not seem to bother him! None of this seems to bother him! He is more accepting of the ugly facts of life than I am! As parents, we do not own our children! We literally have no control over them! We might like to believe that we raise them in a certain manner to grow up into young men and women who will meet our expectations. We are delusional! There are no guarantees! I am nothing like my family! Most people I know are nothing like their families! We all branched out away from our parents’ expectations! Most of the familial conflicts that I am aware of come from the friction between who we are and who our parents wanted us to be! This lack of acceptance … this cold rejection … this disapproval is cutting holes into the elastic bond between generations. What if he was one of them! What if my son grew up into a religious fanatic? What if he became one form or another of a fascist? What if he chose to carry a gun? What if he became a terrorist? What if he became a policeman? What if he joined the army? What if he was sucked into the power wars of the good, the bad, and the ugly? I watch the news and all I could think of is my son … and what if he was one of them!
police? Remember a year later our chants against the army? Remember our chants against the Islamists? Look at us today … we are drowning in slime! I see dead people from Morsy’s supporters and how millions are calling them terrorists and killers! They died for a cause they believe in! Some died thinking that they were protecting Islam! Others died thinking they were protecting democracy! There are also those who died while terrorizing civilians; shooting at their cars, their homes, and their heads! I hear human rights defenders saying that the police used unnecessary excessive force! Then again I think what if he was one of them! There are close members of my family who are fully supportive of the army and the ministry of interior in their eradication of the Islamists. I hear them using the same phrases that were used a couple of years ago against those who protested in Tahrir; calling them thugs and terrorists and accusing them of standing in the way of productivity and stability. When a woman was harassed in Tahrir, voices blamed her saying “what was she doing there?” When a child was killed in Tahrir, voices blamed the adults who allowed him to go and accused his family of using him and endangering his life. Today those very same words are used against Morsy’s supporters! Over the past three years, we have all lost a part of our humanity; some of us lost a bigger part than the rest of us but that does not change the fact that we are less human beings than we used to be … we are way less human than we should be! Our ability to empathize with others has floundered under the pressures of fear … we fear for our lives and the lives of our loved ones. Insecurity in its exact sense has deprived us of empathy. Death has become another statistic … just like birth! There was a time when the death of a person mattered … hurt! Today people die … they get killed … they cease to exist … and we are okay with it! We no longer think of how they suffered before they died, how their families feel, and how their death will shake the world they left. I remember a time when hearing of someone dying put a damper on our soul … how did we end up calling for violence, death, and more blood? How is it that today we cheer for the killing of hundreds every day? I used to think that dog wrestling should be criminalized … I am not sure what to think now when we have become a bloodthirsty crowd dealing with human beings as though they were dogs … we divided people into camps and every time our “team” scores a new death we cheer! What if he was one of them?
I see the dead officers and soldiers then I see how my friends are gloating! Those officers and soldiers have tortured and abused civilians during their power trips! They are trigger-happy! Remember how Khaled Said was killed? Remember Sayed Belal? Remember the long list of abuses? Remember what happened on January 25, 26, 27, and 28? Remember our revolution against oppression? Remember our chants against the
This is a question that might restore a part of our lost humanity! Ask yourself what if your son or daughter or any loved one ended up in the opposite camp … what if he became a number … just a target in the eyes of the hooligans of this bloody sport called fascism? Please stop cheering! Dear media people, dear Egyptians, dear world … please stop cheering! IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2013

‘SUSHI YA’ SONESTA HOTEL, Tower & Casino – Cairo ’s Asian Flair
CAIRO’S JAPANESE RESTAURANT “SUSHI YA” IS COZY AND QUAINT ENOUGH FOR A ROMANTIC DINNER OR BUSINESS LUNCH, BUT BIG ENOUGH TO PROVIDE THE SPACE AND COMFORT YOU NEED WITH A SEATING CAPACITY OF ABOUT 36 PEOPLE. Decorated in contemporary Asian themes, Sushi Ya gives a warm feeling of authenticity and innovation at the same time. You have the choice of sitting in a comfortably cushioned booth, small private table, or at the sushi bar where you can watch the chef at work. The ability to watch the professional chef as he slices, dices, sauces and steams your food provides reassurance of the cleanliness and detail to hygiene taken very seriously at Sushi Ya. Eye-catching appearance doesn’t end at décor, but continues with the presentation of each dish served. Unique and modern plate ware, plus elegantly displayed food create dishes that look almost too good to eat.
If you’re the kind of person who finds it difficult to make decisions, all of the staff at Sushi Ya can help you. In addition to being extremely professional, friendly and accommodating, the staff is very well knowledgeable in order to give their best recommendation according to each individual customers needs.
Eye-catching appearance doesn’t end at décor, but continues with the presentation of each dish served.
Looks aren’t everything at Sushi Ya. With an extensive sushi menu and variety of hot main dishes, there’s something tasty for everyone to enjoy. If you’re a sushi lover, the spicy tuna rolls will melt in your mouth, and the beef teriyaki is perfect 50
as a main course. Of course if you save room, you might want to try the fried bananas or fried ice cream, both traditional Japanese deserts.

IDENTITY’S INTERVIEW
&
DALIA AMER YOUNG, DETERMINED SUCCESSFUL
Dalia Amer - General Manager Radisson Blu Hotel, Alexandria
Let’s start by briefly introducing yourself to our readers… The first thing I always mention proudly that I am a mother to a beautiful 8 years old girl, while more on the professional side I started my hotels career in 1995 worked in different Sales & Marketing posts in different multinational chains and currently I am the General Manager of Radisson Blu Hotel, Alexandria which again makes me very happy because Alexandria is my home city. What advice do you have for young aspiring women like you to reach a prestigious position? And did you expect to reach where you are today? My first advice is “never let anyone tell you that you can’t” whatever you draw for your life, you can achieve, for sure if you believe in it, your mind will always get you there. I believed in myself, and of course in God’s will, I knew that I can do It, so my mind didn’t disappoint me. What do you think of tourism nowadays in Egypt? I think that tourism is facing quiet a challenging situation, Egypt has been through a lot along history. But we have proven that we come back stronger and more persistent to lead the tourism market in the region as we most certainly deserve, being uniquely blessed by such nature and such history. From your point of view, what’s the step that must be taken by the Ministry of Tourism to promote tourism in Egypt and make it one of the first countries in the field? The main challenge for the Ministry of Tourism now, is security and political stability inside Egypt and I totally understand how tied handed they
must feel about that. Once this is settled our very experienced crew in the Ministry of Tourism & other organizations related to it will immediately make the necessary noise to make the whole world know that Egypt is back. What is missing in Egypt to be the world’s first destination for tourists? In my opinion “service” mainly and by service I don’t mean only inside the hotels & resorts, I mean starting the moment the tourist arrives at the airport dealing with government officials, luggage carriers, taxi drivers and different shops during his journey. They have to know that each & everyone make an impression that stays about Egypt. What are the obstacles you face in the field of tourism in Egypt? For the past years it was security and political instability, while the service, knowledge of the industry & qualified staff are ongoing problems. What is your future dream position? On the short term, I am looking to be one of the best GMs in Egypt and longer term a district director handling more than one Hotel. What are the features found in the Radisson Blu Hotel and not in other hotels, what makes it unique? “Our Team”, people always make the difference, of course the Hotel is one of the most beautiful properties I have seen, really unique with an outstanding landscape but I still believe that our people are our main asset.
