New Christmas Songs Time To Update Your Holiday Playlist!

Best of Instagram

by Nanise Mohamed

You may wonder why listen to new Christmas songs when we could spend most of December jamming to Frank Sinatra’s White Christmas or Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You. But when the new songs include artists like Michael Bublé, Jessy J and John Legend, you will for sure want to update that playlist of yours. The guests of your Christmas Eve dinner will definitely thank you! Bruno Mars- White Christmas Although this is only a cover, Bruno Mar’s version of White Christmas is nearly as perfect as Frank Sinatra’s. Who knew the man who sings Uptown Funk could bring us Christmas joy? Charlie Puth- Mistletoe “I don’t wanna miss out on the holiday, but I can’t stop starin’ at your face, I should be playin’ in the winter snow, but I’ma be under the mistletoe” Yeah, you’ve heard it before. Justin Bieber was the original singer of Mistletoe, but Charlie Puth is just a better match! Sufjan Stevens- Lonely Man of Winter You may have heard of Sufjan Stevens, but you probably didn’t know that he made about 100 Christmas songs. The most known is Lonely Man of Winter, but if you try playing his songs in a loop it will feel a lot like Christmas in no time! Billie Eilish- Come Out and Play

Sia- Old Santa Claus “Babe, I woke up and I watched the snow fall from my sky Babe, I woke up and I felt a tear slip from my eye Babe, I woke up and I wished for just another night!” Crying over her long lost love in Christmas? You know Sia wouldn’t miss that chance. John Legend- What Christmas Means To Me So, John Legend apparently sings for something else other than Chrissy Teigen. We played his full holiday album but, to be honest, What Christmas Means To Me is the best!

Best Dressed At CIFF 41 Closing!

Ariana Grande- Santa Tell Me “Santa tell me if you’re really there Don’t make me fall in love again If he won’t be here next year Santa tell me if he really cares…” This is actually a nice song that was also written by Grande!

Who knew Billie Eilish makes holiday songs? Well, Play this modern list of our handpicked Christmas of course she gave it a little upbeat twist but it’s still songs on a loop, and you will not need that old list of yours no more. worth listening to. 16 December 2019

Procedures

1.

Chemical Peeling under the supervision of a dermatologist

Seeing a dermatologist is a crucial first step when it comes to peeling the skin. It’s one of the procedures that one undertakes in order to have smoother better looking skin with fewer wrinkles and fine lines. The chemical peel is basically a technique that works to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands. It’s applied to the skin to exfoliate it and eventually peel it off.

2.

Ultherapy

This is a nonsurgical method to achieve younger looking and perfect skin with the use of modern technology. Ultherapy uses sound waves to heat the facial tissue deep beneath the skin. It creates new collagen and leaves you with a firmer and much tighter face and neck. The impact is significant but not instant. You won’t ever regret it! The one-course/ treatment session takes up to 60 minutes. However, the amount of times you need to get Ultherapy depends on the person. On average, most would need only one session.

Hair

Let Your Be the Star of the Show on New Year’s Eve!

#4

by Aya Aboshady

Dressing up and doing your hair and makeup for New Year’s Eve isn’t at all an easy task. Because who doesn’t want to look dashing as they welcome a new year into their lives? As fellow women, we do understand the struggle. And in order to help you out, we brought you a list of very pretty, classy and edgy hairstyles you can choose from to rock the evening!

#3 #2

The All-Overthe-Place Big Curls

If you already have curly hair, then you won’t have to invest any effort in styling your hair diffrrently for New Year’s Eve. Just do your regular hair routine, tighten your curls, layer them and you have yourself a dashing look! However, if you don’t have curly hair but want to pull that look off; then curl your hair really wide, play with the layers and make them look a bit messy - but pulled together, and you have it!

#1

The 20s Edge

Everybody likes a little bit of vintage in their lives. Especially if you take it to the next level and choose a totally vintage look for a night out. But no matter what you choose to wear on New Year’s Eve, we promise it’ll go with this unique slicked to the side tight 80s waves. If you’re someone with short hair, you’ll rock this look even harder than others!

22 December 2019

Sleek High Ponytail

The Slicked Back Wet Look

Want to look classy and different? Ditch the same old hairstyle you go for on important events and try pulling your hair up this time in a high ponytail after having it nicely straightened. The sleek and neat look will turn everyone’s heads!

If you’re aiming to stand out this New Year’s Eve, then we know exactly what you need to do. It’s time to go Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner style and make your hair look all wet and slicked back. And the best thing about this look is that it doesn’t even need much work; just damp your hair, and leave it to the hair gel and spray products!

#6 #5

Mermaid Braid This hairstyle would look gorgeous on anyone with long hair! Just braid your hair Mermaid-style and work on a bit of a loopy mohawk in the front. This hairstyle will make you look both simple and incredibly classy for a nice New Year’s outing/party.

Effortless Middle-Parted Low Bun This is basically like a messy bun, but classier. If you want to look effortlessly pretty on New Year’s Eve then just part your hair right at the middle and pull it back in a somewhat loose but not too much - low bun and you’re ready to go! This hairstyle is also a great way to flash your statement earrings! Don’t forget that. December 2019 23

Bringing Back The 1920s Vintage Trends! by Nanise Mohamed

Who doesn’t fantasize about living in the era of the Great Gatsby? We know we do. The 1920’s culture is seeing a revival, just as other decades have in the past. With classier music and swing, jazz, and blues music seeing a comeback. Luckily, it’s not just in the entertainment, but fashion too. Here are the roaring twenties trends that are now in vogue!

Bob Haircuts Bobbed hair has come to stay forever and ever. Any and every attempt to stop the 1920’s short bob haircut by women has failed completely. Hollywood stars now and then seem to agree that this haircut is just timeless. Don’t worry about rocking it; it almost suits every face type!

Flapper Dress (sequins, fringes)

Extravagant Headpieces

Drop waist dresses from the twenties have returned to modern fashion in a marvelous way. For an edgy look, wear it in cotton blends decorated with bright, bold ethnic patterns and match with sandals for a laid back look. For chic contrast, top it with a kimono or cardigan and add some bold bangles and ankle boots for a more modern Coachella boho babe vibe.

24 December 2019

With shorter hair being the biggest hair trend of the twenties, every woman saw all the more reason to show off her trendy hairstyle by wearing hairpieces for dancing the Charleston and wooing her lover with some shimmer. To wear a headpiece by day, opt for a simple silky chemise or top and jeans. To wear by night for a formal event or somewhere you want to be “noticed”, the brighter the better.

Faux Fur Coats

Oxford Shoes

Fur coats were a must-have accessory in the 1920s. Lucky for us, fur has been making a comeback for the past few years and it’s no longer limited to eveningwear. Invest in a fur coat (faux, obviously we don’t want any animal harm) with colors like baby blue and pink to be chic and in style.

The classic Mary Jane shoes are returning but under the name Oxford shoes and with a modern twist. They now come without heels and with more colors and styles. Oxfords are mainly worn casually, but now more interest is growing into wearing them with..... with cocktail dresses and suits as an alternative to heels! December 2019 25

A Talk with the Man of the Hour, Nicolas Mouawad interview by Aya Aboshady

Since 2016, Lebanese actor Nicolas Mouawad has been taking the entertainment scene by storm. From his role as Farouk the religious man in Yehia El-Fakharany’s “Wannous”, his charming persona as Tarek in the Egyptian hit “Sabe3 Gar” to his recent portrayal of the conflicted emotional bad boy Taymour in “Bela Dalil” and many things in between, Mouawad has been turning so many heads with his countless stunning performances. As he stars in his first ever Egyptian movie titled “Mako”, also the first of its genre in the Arab world, we sat down with the Lebanese star to learn more about his recent and upcoming projects as well as his secret formula to deliver what we all enjoy to see from him on screen.

December 2019 29

As for the narrative opening scene, our great director Manal El Saifi’s one-shot choice, along with the deep words of our writer Engy Alaa, were everything any actor would need and more to feel they’re into it.

2. A lot of people are anticipating the release of “Mako”, the first Egyptian movie you star in; how I play Karim the investigator who’s so composed was that experience for you? And talk to us about and calm on the outside, but has a past that keeps working on such a different genre of films! haunting him and thus, threatens his professionalism and commitment. I think I’m anticipating it more than all of them combined. “Mako” is not only the first Egyptian movie I star in, but it’s also the first of its genre in the Arab 4. So far, what has been the closest project to your world. It’s an underwater movie and this is really heart? What’s special about it? something. I mean, regardless of the experiences “Mako” will be opening the door to, we - the cast and I fell in love with all the characters I’ve played from crew - will always be the first ones to have done it. the first read. I’m one of those actors who would turn Not to mention the adrenaline rush you feel each time down a project if they didn’t really fall for the character. you remind yourself of the fact that you are doing one However, Omar in Youssef el Deeb’s “Love of those movies you used to watch in movie theaters Improvisations”, a movie we shot in Dubai in 2012 and think “I wish we had this in our part of the world!” - which got me the Best Lead Actor Award at the London International Filmmakers Festival, the following year - is very special to my heart, because 3. Your upcoming Lebanese series “Al-3awdah” is a of the exceptional behind the scenes moments and romantic one, a genre that many viewers usually the one of a kind outcome. tune in to watch; what should we expect from it? Also, Farouk in “Wannous”, my first Egyptian TV What’s extremely special about “Al-3awdah” is the series, Tarek in “Sabe3 Gar”, Taymour in “Bela Dalil”, fact that it’s not just a romantic series. It’s a thriller and lately the role of Prophet “Abraham” in my where lots of crimes are taking place, in addition to first American feature film “His Only Son”. That’s a beautiful unconventional love story that shouldn’t exceptional on all levels, a once in a lifetime character be happening, but is still happening regardless of and a beautiful shooting experience, which I can’t wait for the audience to watch. everything.

30 December 2019

It was emotionally exhausting and draining I would say. I’ve once said that the hardest part about being an actor is the fact that you use your own memories and emotions as working tools, and that’s what I deeply felt while playing Taymour. I was so emotionally unstable at times that it ended up affecting my personal life.

My new year’s resolution is my everyday one - to live as happily as I can. And to make the people around me as happy as possible.

1. Your role as Taymour in the newly released Egyptian series “Bela Dalil” has been displaying so many emotions from the very first episode; how was it like playing such an emotional and mentally disturbed character? Also tell us more about the introduction/narrative scene that got everybody talking!

5. What role are you still waiting to play? and Why? 9. Are you thinking of getting more into the big screen, especially after “Mako”? I dream of playing a character with multiple personality disorders, because it’s super challenging for any actor I must confess that when it comes to the big screen, to do. As well as a character who knows they’ll die I’m always more prudent. It’s like it’s that big - I don’t soon because it’s a super emotionally intense stage of want to mess up. Movies are history; they’re archives, life, which is a beautiful working tool for me. so I’d rather have a few impactful ones than many that aren’t. That’s why I’ve been turning down a lot of 6. How do you mentally prepare yourself for a role? movies, especially in the last couple of years. Because How did you prepare for Taymour in “Bela Dalil” it has to be something that people will watch in a hundred years from now and still admire it. for example? Not all roles require the same amount of psychological preparation, but I always find myself attracted to those that require a lot of it. I create a background for the character even when it’s not mentioned in the script; it‘s where the character comes from - that makes them act and feel in a certain way. For Taymour, it was scenes from my own past which I recalled - some really tough situations I’ve been through. In addition to some details I adopted from friends, like how they behave when they’re drunk or when they feel threatened or down. It’s like taking different ingredients from your own self and from other people to come out with a super new, yet super real character.

7. Which character had a strong after-effect on you? And Why? It’s the character of Prophet Abraham. I think I was very scared of letting go of all the emotional pain during the whole period of shooting, to the point that even on my days off, I denied myself all kinds of pleasures - that I ended up holding on to it even after the shooting was done. I was so broken on the inside, and I had become so used to it while shooting, that I kind of found comfort in it. It was so hard to let it go.

8. Is there any actor you look up to in some kind of way? Or want to work with in the future? There are many actors I look up to, but if I had to pick two, for example, I would say Daniel Day Lewis and John Malkovich. I also love Heath Ledger, James Franco, Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling.

10. Which do you like more, films or series? And Why? I’m more of a movies kind of person. I know this will sound weird but I’ve barely watched any series. On the other hand, I’m a movie addict. I can go to the movies almost every day - mainly alone. The movie theatre smell and experience are therapeutic for me.

11. What’s your New Year’s resolution? My New Year’s resolution is my everyday one - to live as happily as I can and to make the people around me as happy as possible. Nothing special like a pragmatic change or something, it’s just to make the best of what we have and always be thankful. 12- What are you working on right now other than the projects we know about? I’m currently still shooting both “Mako” and “Al3awdah”. So even thinking about any upcoming plans is out of the question. And to be honest, unless something super tempting comes up, I’ll do my best to get some free time. Especially since my American movie “His Only Son” will be premiering in LA, in April.

Well, from the looks of it, we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Mouawad very soon. And it seems the actor is going to continue taking the entertainment scene by storm. From starring in Egyptian and Lebanese series to gracing our big screens for the first time, and hopefully many more to come, who would ever complain about having such amazing talent displayed everywhere? We can’t wait for the man of the hour’s next steps and we’re pretty sure our readers are feeling the same! December 2019 35

Is it true that what shapes who we choose as a set a high benchmark for future partners in their son’s romantic partner is our relationships with our or daughter’s life. primary caretakers as kids? Yes! This is entirely true. The first three years of our lives shape - almost all of - our personality. Moreover, the care, love, and attention we receive during these years define our self-esteem and self-worth as adults. An infant who is left to cry until he/she stops, or who is denied his/her need for physical touch, hugs, kisses, and being held – that infant learns at such an early age that he/she is not worthy of love.

The sad truth is: there are so many broken homes out there and most likely a person with a healthy and happy childhood will end up in a relationship with someone with a miserable childhood. Most of the time, the healthy happy person is trying to rescue that sad miserable partner – and in the process, he/she ends up being used and abused.

Is it true people are drawn to whatever they are familiar with, and they end up replicating the As for our primary caretakers, they act as a mirror in the same patterns they experienced in their earliest infant’s or toddler’s life. A baby scans its mother’s face relationships? and internalizes that result. Frowns, lethargy, apathy, and boredom are all translated into disapproval of its existence.

As if this was not agonizing enough, this experience with the primary caregiver, in most times, the mother, sets the tone of that baby’s future relationships. It will grow into a person who chooses friends and partners that treat him/her, the same way he was treated as an infant. It is as though, the emotions he/she felt in the very early years become his/her emotional comfort zone. Children who are loved unconditionally, and whose needs are met consistently, grow up to choose partners and friends who treat them with the same kind of respect.

Are we unconsciously searching for somebody who has a conglomeration of negative and positive traits of the caretakers from our childhood?

If you observe people around you, you will realize that a girl who grew up in a house full of domestic violence, ends up in relationships where she is subjected to violence and abuse. Although she hated how her father abused her mother, she is still attracted to a man who is as disrespectful and abusive as her father. A boy who has been denied secure attachment with his mother as an infant and child, grows up to chase after women who are either out of his league, or who simply reject him. Although, he was originally looking for the love he was denied, yet, he looks for it with women who will neglect his feelings the same way his mother did. There is another side to that coin! The parents who

Other than childhood experiences, there is another factor at play when shaping our relationship patterns. Our earliest relationships decide how we choose our future partners. For example, a teen girl falls in love with a handsome well-built jerk. She is trapped in the hot-cold rollercoaster. She is addicted to the thrill of chasing after him and the rush of adrenaline she gets when he pays her attention. After several months or a year, he leaves her, or she leaves him. Then she starts dating someone who treats her just as badly.

Why? Because she has been made to believe that this is love and that this is the way relationships should be. If the relationship is not full of pain, anguish, wondering, and insecurity, then the man must be “just a friend”.

If yes, how to stop the cycle? There are two parallel lines to walk when trying to end that cycle; first, awareness. Second, psychotherapy. Being aware of the reasons behind the choices that cause us pain and misery is half of the way. To reach that level of awareness, a person needs to know and confront their infancy and childhood traumas, try to forgive their caregivers, and work on building new positive affirmations. Also, one needs to examine previous relationships and consciously realize how and why they were wrong for us. Then a psychotherapist will help talk you out of the negative pattern and guide you through new relationships. December 2019 39

5 Things

You Need to Host the Perfect Christmas Dinner

You don’t have to go the classic Michael Bublé route either if you don’t want to. Figure out what vibe you want your party to have. If you’re going for something classic, play all the old favorites like Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole.

Christmas is right around the corner, which can only mean one thing: Holiday parties are around the corner too! Now, there is no clear-cut guideline to being the perfect hostess with the mostess ala Monica Geller, but there are always several ways you can try.

If that doesn’t quite fit your image, then maybe a 1920’s theme to embrace the new decade as well as to be the perfect excuse for you to dress up in your flapper best.

If you want something fresher, well, newer artists like Sia, John Legend, The Beach Boys, Mariah Carey, Weezer, and NSYNC have all released Christmas albums for your listening pleasure.

So, what makes the perfect holiday party host? You can remove, mix, and match any element from Other than wit and charm, we guess everything else a dinner party and it will somehow all work out. The is manageable. one component that you will not be able to change,

Now that we’ve ate and danced and admired the view, we can safely say it’s time for some fun and games.

All you’ll need will be good catering, theme, and party games, among other things. Knowing how hectic it’ll be to organize to go about them the predictable way. and host a dinner party, though, we’d advise you to cater.

Theme Let’s be real, your Christmas dinner won’t be just a dinner. It will be a dinner party and what party wouldn’t be made better with a theme? The key to picking your theme here is knowing what will make your guests excited, ready for a laugh, and looking forward to your party. You could go the Jack Skellington route and make it a costume-themed dinner. Another way to go is a standard masquerade, which will certainly be a different and an interesting twist to a classic dinner party.

Fortunately, your catering options are plenty! You can try stacking up on home cooked meals from the application Mumm or the many restaurants that offer catering options. For a different ethnic twist to your dinner, we recommend Zulu. That’s for the main course and sides, of course. For desserts, Egypt’s many confectionaries are stacked to the brim with cakes, tarts, especially decorated for the holidays in places like Coppermelt.

Because it’s a Christmas dinner party after all, get into the spirit and channel the essence of every old Christmas jazz record as you decorate.

In the spirit of treating your inner child and in spirit of a joyful occasion, why not incorporate a few classics into your after-dinner phase of the evening?

Get a Christmas tree—artificial is better, of course— and zero in on the nearest antique store to you for some vintage-inspired ornaments. And don’t forget to hang your fairy-lights and stockings to get the most out of the cozy, holiday feel.

You can add the showstoppers like Monopoly, UNO, Snakes and Ladders, Jenga, Cards Against Humanity, and many more.

You can also check the latest Christmas decoration trends. For the new year, the most popular colors and materials in ornaments will be metal hues as well as rust and warmer colors.

If you want to put a twist on game night, you can always add physically requiring games like Twister or an oldie-but-a-goldie in Hide and Seek. Others you can try are charades, Truth or Dare, Never Have I Ever, and Would You Rather. December 2019 41

Do you want to quit a bad habit? Move elsewhere? A new career? Clean out a monster closet you should have gotten around to five years ago? All of that is manageable as long as you know there’s no limit. That being said, don’t go and pen ten thousand different ideas down. No one has the energy for that much. So, what you’ll need to do is to find the happy medium. Don’t write too much, don’t write too little. The next step is knowing what to prioritize, which is honestly easier than it sounds. What you’ll need to do is write everything down, preferably on post-its. Post-its are meant to be stuck, of course, and that’s what we’re doing next but here’s the trick—you’ll stick the notes in a descending line order with the resolutions you feel strongly about at the top of the line. The lower your passion fades for the others, the lower they go.

New Decade,

New You

This order is key to seeing where to start on this selfmetamorphosis, though while planning, you’ll need to understand your limitations to not burn yourself out.

Is It Still Worth It Ten Years On?

Life has a funny way of making you spin around in circles. You wake up always feeling like you’re doing more of the same old thing and it’s not only boring, it’s soul-draining. That routine always drives you to get up every December 31st with an incredible determination to change your life 180 degrees. Sadly, life tends to do a 360-turn instead. Why We Need to Plan Ahead New Year resolutions don’t work. That’s something most of us know. Many of us make bold proclamations that promise to work out regularly or quit smoking. How many actually go through with it, though? Don’t get discouraged. No, it’s not you. You’re a normal person and normal people have limits. It may seem like a lot, but one year is not nearly enough. Ten, however, are. 42 December 2019

Let’s face it. Most things in life have durability. We don’t want to be befuddling here so let’s take weight loss as an example.

Your Way Resolution

Around

A

Monster-sized

A resolution like ‘have a better grasp on my mental health’ might sound maintainable enough until you find out what it really entails. When it comes to mental health, you’ll need to go to therapy or counselling. You might need to find a right path—be it career-wise or social—to maintain your mental stability. You may need to go on medication. There’s a lot that goes into that one resolution. This goes for everything else. Now that we have our final list, we’ll need to see if they can be divided in ways that will make it easier to follow. That way, you can count on things being effortlessly done. Little Reminders It might sound silly but you’ll need to keep reminding yourself of your resolutions because there’s a good chance you’ll forget them. You might argue that you can write them down or that you can make phone reminders but that might not help. Notes can be lost and phones run into technical difficulties. Something that will always stay with us, though, is e-mail. Yes, it’s strange but write an e-mail to yourself and schedule it to be sent next year. Then the next and the next.

Right now, you might want to lose weight. You might be in it for a healthier body and you might be in it because you want to look drop-dead gorgeous in a bikini. Both are fine.

That way, you’ll keep getting pop-ups that will remind you of your goals, where you were, and how everything changed.

The thing is, you might want this now but you won’t necessarily want it afterwards. Things change and weight loss might not become a priority, so what we’ll need to do here is think.

At this point, we have nothing more to say than change is a long process. You might look different afterwards or you might come out with an unchanged reflection and a very changed soul. Sometimes, you might feel like you haven’t done much or that you’ve given one goal too much attention and given others none.

The First Step in the Plan

No, it’s not a joke. We’ll need to sit down and think about the resolutions we’ve written down. Did we just write them to fill up the list or because we felt we have to write down similar things?

Since we have about ten years to work on ourselves, we need to know where to begin. What do you really want to change?

If that’s the case, we need to reevaluate to see what are the goals that we’ll very likely still want to achieve no matter how much time passes.

We don’t want to sound like we’re interviewing you for a job, but you need to imagine the new you. The tenyears-later you. You probably imagine someone who is well-put, but to do that we need to plan now. Yes, you read that correctly. Progress takes time and if we want resolutions we’ll follow, ten years might give us a spacious time-limit to get to it.

That’s not a bad thing. It’s actually better to focus on one thing and do it well rather than spread yourself thin and make a poor job of everything.

The Power of Slow: Why All Good Things Take Time by Amina Moustapha

We’ve all heard Aesop’s fable about the Tortoise and the Hare. It goes like this: There once was a speedy hare who bragged about how fast he could run. Tired of hearing him boast, Tortoise, challenged him to a race. Hare ran down the road for a while and then paused to rest. He looked back at Tortoise and cried out, “How do you expect to win this race when you are walking along at your slow, slow pace?” Hare stretched himself out alongside the road and fell asleep, thinking, “There is plenty of time to relax.” Tortoise walked and walked. He never, ever stopped until he came to the finish line, and won the race. After that, Hare always reminded himself, “Don’t brag about your lightning pace, for slow and steady won the race!” We live in a world that cherishes speed. On the other hand, the nature of life and business is more organic. A precious garden takes time to bloom. A breathtaking mountain needed time to form. Great businesses and world-class lives are not created in a day. It’s more about evolution than revolution. Those small daily improvements that, over time, lead to stunning results. It’s the small steps that matter most. Now that we are about to embark on a new year, people dread having New Year’s resolutions because they didn’t achieve last year’s, and the one before…It’s not that your goals are hard to attain, nothing is, the fault is in how you try to achieve your goal. The contemporary immediate results

obsession

with

Nowadays, most people try to live life the Hare’s way. Not necessarily bragging and boasting, but rather they want things to go FAST, and think that slow steps lead nowhere. 44 December 2019

This mentality makes absolute sense when you look at the contemporary obsession with immediate results and instant gratification we’re being sold every day. We are surrounded with promises of quick riches, of fad diets and training programs that’ll transform our appearance in weeks or days. We can get fast food, microwave food, instant hot water, and emails and text messages delivered anywhere in the world on a second’s notice. These things have made us expect instant results to the point that when we don’t get them, we feel discouraged and immediately quit. The results we’re looking for rarely come quickly For the most part, the results and objective we’re looking for will rarely come instantly. But they won’t take that long, either, they tend to take just a little bit longer than we’re comfortable going for. In order to reach these results, it’s crucial to drop the quick-fix mentality of the Hare and instead adopt the mindset of the Tortoise, meaning, instead of obsessing over the short-term results, you focus on just taking the next tiny step in the right direction. American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn used to say that “failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every day” and that “success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.” How fast you go does not directly impact how far you make it Despite the fast rhythm of today’s life, lasting change doesn’t happen overnight. It requires careful planning.

It’s very ironic that only when you shift your focus away from the results you want that they’ll start showing up. If the Tortoise kept his eyes on the finishing line, and how far it was, his energy would start to drop, he would have started doubting if he could ever make it. Instead, he relentlessly took the next tiny step, and focused just on that. It was inevitable that he reached the finishing line. When you’re consistent, that creates momentum. That momentum creates progress. The progress creates self-confidence. The self-confidence starts shaping a new, more resourceful and empowering identity. And with this new identity comes the ability to create lasting change in your life. Exercise for one hour three times a week for a month, read one book each month, meditate 10 minutes a day

for a couple of weeks. Despite that these steps might look like tiny ones that can’t have any real impact, if you consistently follow them you will find yourself with 150+ hours of exercise under your belt, you would read 12 books a year, this means tons of new insights, ideas, and concepts to enrich your life, you would have 60+ hours of meditation experience, this translates into improved focus, creativity, compassion, memory, less stress and anxiety. Take your goals and divide them up into small daily minimum quotas. Then, start obsessing about executing them every single day. Slow and steady keeps self-doubt at bay, and nothing kills goals more than the civil war known as self-doubt! No matter what your New Year’s resolutions are, remember, slow and steady wins the race. Heart-Warming Winter Food Curried Butternut Squash & Pumpkin Soup

by Soha Darwish Food Writer & Critic - Menu Consultant Diploma in Food Journalism - London, UK

December is here! My favourite month of the year with its cheerful festivities before winter gets serious, dull and long. In any household, there are winter staples that go well with the cold season, and do the job of not only warming you up but even the entire house while cooking. There is nothing more satisfying than coming back home cold and hungry than to be met with the inviting aromas of a winter dish. You just know deep in your heart that the agony of this cold gloomy day is over, and you open up for the warmth and comfort you immediately feel when entering your home. Here are guaranteed untraditional recipes that will surely do the trick!

Dal Makhani This is one of my favourite dishes on earth, my epitome for comfort, hearty and gut-warming food. An Indian creamy black lentil stew, that once tried, it will soar up high in your Top Favourite Food List, try and see! This is a relatively easy and quick version for the famous specialty with accessible ingredients. Believe me, it’s worth the time and effort! • Shopping Basket: 1 cup of black lentils – 1 medium

onion, finely grated – 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated– 3 tbsp sunflower oil - 3 crushed garlic cloves – 1 can tomato puree – 1 ½ tsp garam masala – ½ tsp cumin – ½ tsp cayenne pepper – ½ tsp ground coriander – 1 tbsp tomato paste – 1 bay leaf – 3 tbsp butter – 1 tbsp lime juice – 1 handful of chopped fresh coriander – ½ cup of cream - salt & pepper.

46 December 2019

1. Wash and rinse the whole black lentil in a large bowl. Soak in 3 cups water overnight. 2. In the morning drain the lentils, and then transfer to a pressure cooker with ½ tsp salt. Add around 3 cups of water. Pressure cook on high-medium heat for 8 whistles, then lower the heat to low-medium and cook for another 8 minutes. In total, around 12 to 18 whistles. The lentils should be completely cooked, and you should be able to mash them with your fingers. 3. In a large pot, heat 2 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp ghee on medium heat. Add the grated onion and stir-fry until it turns light golden brown; keep heat on medium. 4. Add the grated ginger and garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. 5. Stir in the tomato paste and tomato puree, cook for 2 minutes. Then, add in the boiled lentils. 6. Add all the dry spices and mix well to combine. Then add ½ cup water, stir and let it simmer on low heat for around 45 minutes. Stir often to stop the dal from sticking to bottom of the pot. You will also need to add water. 7. Add the sugar and the remaining 1 tbsp butter and ¼ cup cream. Simmer for 10 more minutes on low heat after adding the cream. You may serve the dal at this point or do an additional step of giving it a smoky flavour (optional). 8. Place a hot charcoal in a piece of aluminium foil in a large stainless soup ladle. Pour melted ghee (around 1 tablespoon) on top of charcoal. You will immediately see fumes coming out of charcoal. Immediately close the pan with a lid (with holding the ladle inside over the dal). Let it remain like this for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, remove lid and remove the ladle. Garnish with more cream and fresh coriander and serve with nan bread or Basmati rice. Enjoy!

Never intended to come up with this heart-warming soup; was hosting a dinner recently and was about to go for my classic mellow version of it, but something drew me to a more daring flavour. A reviving soup with a heat kick, just what you need in those cold winter evenings.

1. After roasting the squash and pumpkin, peel their skin off and put on the side. 2. In a large pot, heat the oil then add the curry powder, give it a good stir without burning the powder. It’s an important step to release maximum aromatic flavours. 3. Now add the onion and stir fry until translucent. 4. Add all the vegetables, stir fry for 2-3 mins, then add coconut milk and about 2 cups of water. 5. Add the cloves and the stock cube, bring to the boil then simmer until carrots are soft. 6. Remove the cloves then blend all ingredients together until smooth consistency. 7. Add fresh ginger and cayenne pepper then bring to the boil. 8. Simmer for 5 mins, then stir in the cream and simmer for another 2 mins. Enjoy!

• Shopping Basket: 500g diced beef – 1 can of chickpeas – 1 medium finely chopped onion – 1 pack of dry shell pasta (400g) – 3 tbsp sunflower oil - 2 crushed garlic cloves – ¼ tsp nutmeg – ½ tsp cinnamon – ½ tsp turmeric – ½ tsp cayenne pepper – ½ tsp paprika – ½ tsp mixed spices (Arabic or Levantine) – 1 tbsp tomato paste - salt & pepper.

My Easy Imbakbaka I highly regard this hearty one-pot dish for its nutritious value and the energy it releases; a perfect winter meal. I was first introduced to it by my mother in-law, and now it’s another quick and wholesome staple in our house. While there are many versions and surely more authentic ones, I developed this recipe from my usual stock of spices and kind of stuck with it for its convenience and taste.

1. In a large pot, stir fry the onions until golden colour. Add the beef, garlic and all spices; then brown. 2. Add the tomato paste and season well with salt & pepper. Just cover with water and let the thick mixture simmer on low heat for 4-5 mins. 3. Fill up ¾ of pot with water; bring to the boil until meat is cooked to your liking. 4. Stir in the pasta and drained chickpeas, cover with lid and simmer until pasta is cooked, without drying out the glistening sauce. Winter food at its best! December 2019 47

New Tips For The Old Exercising Routine by Nada Abdelkader

In the spirit of rejuvenating ourselves for the new year, we must try to embrace the newness and the leafturning to apply it to all areas of our lives. Romance, yes. Work, life and friends, definitely yes. Exercising and working out, absolutely! It might seem weird now but yes, with the right attitude, even the most tedious part of our lives can be fun and exciting again. So, what are these tips and tricks that will make you rival Jane Fonda in her aerobics’ phase? Well…

Change Your Focus

Break It Up

Sometimes, it’s not best for you to have a zeroed in focus. There’s nothing wrong about wanting to lose weight, but at the same time, it shouldn’t be your only focus. Weight loss should be a factor, a stop on the journey rather than the promise-land.

Ever heard the saying “the little things matter”? Researchers did and they’re telling you all you need is a hundred and fifty minutes of working out a week. That translates to only two hours and a half!

As you shift your focus to wanting to be more healthy, you will feel that exercise will be something other than a “should” or a “must”. We all know that when things turn to obligations, they become exhausting and not so much fun as they were in the beginning.

Find the Right Workout One reason working out might seem like a pain is that you simply haven’t found the right workout yet. Physical exercise can be tiring because, well, it’s physical, but at some point, you must have found yourself comfortable with a couple of exercises. Go back to these exercises and try to remember if you’d been working out alone or with friends. Indoors or outdoors? Was it sports-based? Once you follow this tip, you will notice that working out doesn’t always mean early hours in a gym where you feel swallowed whole by others who were giving it way too much. You can take a kickboxing class, engage in some light dance-based workout, or kick a soccer ball around.

Have the Energy Nine times out ten, working out is a pain because you’re forcing yourself to do it when you have no energy for it. Change all that by taking an introspective look at your lifestyle. A low-fiber diet, poor sleeping habits, and stress will kill the buzz very early on, so what you should do is tear down that lifestyle and try to reconstruct it in a healthier way. Improve your diet by increasing your fiber intake and hydrating and try to get more shuteye. Find newer methods to combat stress if the old ones aren’t working. This may seem like it has nothing to do with how you exercise, but once you take a healthier step forward in your life, your energy tank will be full to the brim and you will hit that treadmill with much more ease. 48 December 2019

You also don’t have to check-off your working out requirements all at once. Breaking up the exercising time is actually more favored by the researchers, who advise people to do up to two or three short exercises a day. These short exercises can be as simple as talking a walk.

Schedule It Since we’re already speaking about breaking up and spreading over your exercise routine, we should probably mention that another solid tip is scheduling your exercises. Reserve at least thirty minutes per day for exercise. That’s not a lot, but it’s certainly not too little when it comes to working out. Don’t let yourself use up this time for anything else, though, or the whole plan might unravel.

Keep the Comparisons to a Minimum Sometimes all that’s making you feel a lot of pressure about working out is that you keep track of everyone else’s exercise game. Competition isn’t always healthy, especially not when it makes you feel like you’re lagging behind everyone else. Competition in that sense results in negative thought—usually of the “I’ll never get that toned” variety—that will eventually make you not want to compete in the first place.

Get a Workout Buddy Part of the reason why you might feel like working out is a chore is that you’re going at it alone. Find an exercise partner in one of your friends and we promise you will not regret it. You don’t have to fix a time to go to the gym or anything like that. Sometimes, just having someone to share tips and progress with makes the whole ride easier and a lot more fun. December 2019 49

Year of Yes “How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person.” by Amina Moustapha

You never say yes to anything.” Who would think that statement would apply to Shonda Rhimes? The mega-talented creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. Still, those six life-altering words were used to describe Rhimes by the person who knows her best: her older sister Delores. In this book, Rhimes reveals how saying YES changed her life, and how it can change yours too. With three hit shows on television and three children at home, no one can blame Shonda for saying no when invitations arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. And to an introvert like Shonda, who describes herself as ‘hugging the walls’ at social events and experiencing panic attacks before press interviews, there was a particular benefit to saying no: nothing new to fear. Then came Thanksgiving 2013, when Shonda’s sister Delores told her that she never says yes to anything. Shonda will take the readers on a ride in Year of Yes where she reveals how saying YES changed and saved her life. And inspires readers everywhere to change their own lives with one little word: Yes. Below are the top 5 lessons from the book:

1.

Say ‘Yes’ to Using Your Voice

Hiding behind your fictional characters is a famous trait writers have, and Shonda confesses that for years she hid her voice in her Grey’s Anatomy character Cristina Yang. She allowed Yang what she never allowed herself 50 December 2019

to do, which was to say all the things she wasn’t brave enough to say in the real world. But when Rhimes accepted that the real world could benefit from hearing her actual voice, that she could stand up and speak out on important issues and actually affect change, she swallowed her fears, and began to speak. She reminds the readers that we all have the power to impact our corner of the world, and she encourages everyone to use their voice because you never know how your voice can change a person’s life.

2.

Say ‘Yes’ to Your Weight

Shonda was not happy with her weight but her behaviors and eating habits were not reflecting that. She took us through how she often felt shame over her weight and judged herself harshly. How she tried on many diets and yet never reached what she wanted weight wise. It wasn’t until she told herself ‘You do not have to lose weight to feel beautiful’ and said yes to her weight. Rhimes’ message is that once you accept yourself fully, then you will feel beautiful and will make better choices for yourself and your health that reflect how beautiful and worthwhile you know you are. Lose weight, gain weight or stay the same, just say ‘yes’ to loving your body and commit to giving it the best you can, because you deserve it.

3.

Say ‘Yes’ to Saying ‘No’

That was a tricky lesson, Shonda explores how she found the courage to say ‘no’ to toxic people in her life. She explains how she used to avoid conflict as much as

possible in her personal life. She wanted to be liked so much that she avoided having difficult conversations. She figured how wrong that was. She advises the readers to not avoid conflict but to say ‘no’ to things and people that are sucking the life out of you. When you understand that you deserve good things, saying ‘no’ to the bad things becomes so much easier.

in that zone. You must root out any friendship that is only keeping you from growing.

4.

The book didn’t discuss only the romantic meaning of love, but all kind of it…Saying ‘yes’ to love means being honest with yourself and others and accepting honesty in return. When you understand that you inherently deserve to be loved, you can say ‘yes’ to help when it is offered to you because you no longer judge yourself for not being a superhero who can do everything at once; and you can fully embrace all that you are and all that you are not. When you open yourself up to love, the universe responds in kindness, and you’ll be “standing in the sun” in no time.

Say ‘Yes’ to Real Friendships

Saying ‘Yes’ to having real friendships is one of the crucial points the book discusses. Shonda urges readers to believe people when they show you who they really are. It is not only fair to them; it’s also fair to you. Only when you become an honest, healthy person, you can cultivate honest, healthy relationships with others. She explains the value of your friends, your support group, it’s a sacred zone and you shouldn’t allow toxic behavior

german delicacies

UNIQUE PLACES TO VISIT IN WINTER

• A popular dish for breakfast is Kartoffelpuffer.

• Berlin: As the capital city, you can find a

Grated potatoes, parsley, eggs and onion are mixed together and deep-fried to make the dish, which many like to call a ‘potato pancake’. • Black Forest Cake can be found almost

everywhere in Germany (including the Black Forest of course!) and is rich in cherries, chocolate, liquor and whipped cream. • In the winter months the ginger smell of Lebkuchen fills the air. Moulded into all kinds of shapes as well as the traditional ‘gingerbread man’ shape, these biscuits are amazing! Head to any of Germany’s festive markets and you’ll be sure to find these in large quantities. • While German food is amazing, the country is also known for its love of beer and mulled wine. Each year in Munich you’ll even be able to find the world’s largest beer festival, Oktoberfest. If that doesn’t prove German love for beer, I don’t know what will!

TOP 4 GERMAN FESTIVITIES TO EXPERIENCE 1. Wrap up warm and browse handmade gifts at one of Germany’s many Christmas Markets. Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is a popular choice for tourists, as it contains goods from all over the world, as well as traditional Lebkuchen (gingerbread biscuits) too! Germany is a spectacular country renowned for its stunning castles, tranquil villages and vibrant cities. No time is better to visit than December, when the nation overflows with festive markets and prepares itself for a New Year’s celebration like no other. Visa

transportation

To visit Germany, you’ll need a Tourist Schengen Visa which will allow you to enter for up to 90 days. Head to the German Embassy in Cairo at least 3 weeks before your holiday with the documents listed on the Schengen Visa information website. You will have a short interview and pay a visa fee of € 60. Then, it will take around 10 days for the visa application to be processed.

Germany’s public transport is perfect for tourists, with cheap long-distance bus routes, excellent rail networks and airports in each of Germany’s main cities. You can also explore rural areas using hire cars very easily.

weather In winter months, average temperatures range between -3 °C and 5°C, so make sure you wrap up warm! If you’re in Germany during December or January, the chances are you will encounter some snow during your stay. That’s why gloves, scarves, hats and a warm coat should be added to your shopping list before you go.

2. Take a camera and prepare to be amazed at Berlin’s Botanical Garden which lights up like a winter wonderland in December and January. The light displays, illuminations and 3D figures last a staggering 1.5km, which is why it’s definitely worth a visit.

huge array of restaurants, museums and places of historical significance here. The Neues Museum in particular is worth a visit, as Queen Nefertiti’s bust is on exhibit here, alongside many other interesting ancient Egyptian artefacts. •• Zugspitze: Home to the highest mountain in Germany, you can try all kinds of different winter sports here, like skiing, snowboarding and ice skating. Just make sure to wrap up warm and rent all the specialist sports equipment when you’re there – this is a true family friendly spot. • The Black Forest: With hundreds of miles

of walking trails, this is the perfect place to catch some fresh air and unwind from the chaos of city life. Named after the sheer number of pine trees found here, The Black Forest hosts a collection of small towns famous for their quirky cuckoo clocks and traditional food. Also known as ‘The Romantic Road’, it’s a really popular destination for couples. • Füssen: This small town hosts multiple

castles including Hohes Schloss, which features gothic architecture and a regional art museum. Nearby you can admire snowy mountain peaks from the comfort of a panoramic cable car which heads up the side of Tegelberg mountain. You can also choose to head back down by alpine slide, although be warned you will need to hold on tight!

3. A day-trip to one of Germany’s many castles is a must, especially Hohenzollern Castle on the outskirts of Stuttgart – at this time of year, it hosts an infamous chocolate market! 4. Plan a holiday so that it overlaps with New Year’s Eve and stay in the capital, where you can experience Berlin’s world-famous street party and firework display at Brandenburg Gate. It is thought that around a million people flock to the streets each year to witness this spectacle, so certainly add it to your bucket list!

Identity Signs

Sagittarius November 22 – December 22

Gifts Giftstoo toogood goodtotolet letSanta Santatake takeall allthe thecredit. credit. Strengths: Goal-oriented, ambitious, enthusiastic, open-minded and versatile. Weaknesses: Impatient, temperamental, blunt, distrusting and sensitive. Career: Sagittarius will do whatever is needed to achieve their goals and will be continuously advancing in the required direction. They are commonly good at sales, as they are very talkative. They usually succeed in the spheres that demand to be dynamic and energetic. They can be great teachers, travel agents, artists and photographers. Most compatible with at work: Aries, Leo, Libra & Sagittarius. Virgo: Virgo is a perfectionist, wanting everything to be carefully researched; Sagittarius is more freewheeling, preferring to wing what they don’t know and deal with the fallout later. Both will be happier working with other signs.

Work Compatibility Aries: As fellow Fire Signs, they get along pretty well. They know what to expect from each other and are happy that the focus can be on the job they’re performing, not on the small, social details of working together. Taurus: Two different working styles! Taurus prefers to take it slow and steady, while Sagittarius needs to move quickly toward their goals. Hence, terrible match. Gemini: Though Gemini and Sagittarius are opposite one another on the Zodiac wheel, there’s a lot to like about pairing them in the workplace because neither is especially interested in stealing all the credit.

Libra: When these two combine forces, the sky is the limit! Both have great work skills, Libra with their ease and sociability and Sagittarius with their natural gregariousness. Scorpio: Scorpio’s watery and emotional nature also makes Sagittarius’ fire fizzle out. they don’t get along much in their working lives, preferring to gravitate toward other signs. Sagittarius: If you want complete career compatibility, pair one Sagittarius with another. Their wild ideas know no limits, and their innate optimism shines through, and everything works out in the end. Capricorn: Terrible match! Neither can be convinced that the other may have a point, so it’s best that they seek other signs to work and form alliances with to advance their career goals.

Cancer: Very risky match! Cancer, as a Water Sign, can be a little on the moody side, which dampens Sagittarius’ dynamic spirit.

Aquarius: Risky match. The brainstorming sessions between them may be fast and furious, as exciting new ideas emerge. The challenge for this combination may be which ideas to pursue first.

Leo: Both Fire Signs, meaning they have a lot of energy and like to take action to get things done. Together, this team can find great success in the career realm, and maybe change the world a little, too.

Pisces: Though Sagittarius and Pisces share a desire to connect with the bigger, wider world, they’re not very compatible on the career front. Pisces won’t handle Sagittarius’ fiery traits.
