recent discovery that the mating season for the Pharaohs was summer, got me thinking; it still is!
Summer is always associated with new beginnings, weddings, loud music, partying, flings…etc., we are not that far from our ancestors, our rituals are still the same. This issue we combine summer and music, all popped up in one, to accompany you wherever you go. Our team has interviewed some rising stars in the music arena keeping you up to date with this summer’s new beats; composers and Dj’s that rock and tantalize your senses with their music. Alongside, we have compiled what’s buzzing this summer; fashion, design, bags, burgers, bistros, furniture …and much more, specially catered for our readers who are stuck in Cairo. Unfortunately we couldn’t reach confirmed beach activities at time of print. Hope you enjoy your read as much as we enjoyed its making…

Happiness… it seems to be the Holy Grail for everyone. We all seem to do everything and work towards making ourselves and others happy. We aspire to that By: Ahmed Hassan dream job we @MrTooFab always wanted, for the “one”, for fortune, for fame and the list goes on. It seems that in every point of our life, our happiness largely depends on whether we achieve or attain something or not. A conversation with a friend about life being beautiful, got him to respond “Dear Ahmed…You’re still young, you have a lot to experience. Life isn’t really beautiful.” I choked. I believe that there’s always a good thing out of a bad experience. Is it even possible or am I just fooling myself into believing this as a way to prevent myself from sadness and depression? Do I suffer from eternal optimism? No. Like any person, I have had my ups and downs, my share of happiness and of sadness. At some point it even felt like I was so desperate for anything to bring me the happiness I longed for, that I manifested relationships and believes; all in a state of absolute dependence on a source of happiness. As infants we are completely dependent on our parents for everything including our play time or “happy” time. As we grow older, we change that source of happiness to materialistic items, people or life goals. However, if that “source” of happiness, was really a reliable one, shouldn’t it offer everlasting happiness? Many people have seemingly perfect lives and yet remain unhappy. The answer is that they haven’t graduated their own emotions to a state of independence. They rely on finite things for their happiness. Not to mention that midst all that, they are in a state of absolute oblivion of why they’re feeling this way and keep searching for answers that already lie within. Well, I will let you in on my secret. I have stopped relying on others or things for my happiness! For my real source of happiness I count on only one person, me. You are in control of your own mood, your own happiness. Stop letting circumstances or people control it because it’s the easy way out. It may take you longer to refill your happy bar but the rewards will be stronger and more effective. Find your own, find your identity and you’ll find your happiness.

In a desperate attempt to paint Eminem as a racist, The Source founders Benzino and Dave Mays emerged with a tape that caught a 17-year old Marshall Mathers using the N-word. On one of the songs from the 1988 tape, an amateurish Eminem used hateful words at black women: “All the girls I like to bone have big butts/No they don’t, ‘cause I don’t like that nigger shit/I’m just here to make a bigger hit.” Eminem later explained that he wrote the song out of anger, having gone through a nasty break-up with his black girlfriend. Ma$e once ran into Eve at a strip club years before she became famous, but he never mentioned it to anyone. Some internet jerk who stumbled upon pictures of Eve from her stripping days, however, wasn’t so nice. In 2003, just as Eve was in the middle of revamping her image as an artist and aspiring actress, unflattering pictures of her in full-on stripper outfit surfaced on the web to the amusement of many. Some of the photos showed the Ruff Ryders’ first lady in a compromising position with another female. She later denied being a lesbian, saying that the other lady had been Photo shopped onto the original picture. Well, there was nothing photo shopped about the sex tape that turned up a couple years after the stripper saga.

Beyonce, who is famous worldwide for a couple of good reasons (first is: 3rd sexiest female singer in the world and the second is: beautiful young voice of the century), but there is another reason for her fame. Beyonce is among those few female singers from the United States that have fallen down during their performances so many times. One can say that Beyonce is an expert in falling down and starting right after picking herself up from where she was before falling, and pretend just like nothing happened.

Days like these happen, there is no predicting what can go wrong, we just have to deal with it and make the photoshoot succeed no matter what. Secretly I loved those days, I don’t love disasters or anything, but on days like these I felt useful.

Deciding to learn photography, I attended my very first photoshoot as Moe’s assistant. The deal was that I assist him on his shoots, and he teaches me all about photography. Though I had fun I was feeling useless. It didn’t seem like Moe really needed my help in anything. The shoot was soon over, Moe was in a hurry, he rushed me back home, and we called it a day. I was confused, I didn’t learn anything for real, and I didn’t help much either. I decided to give it a few more tries, no harm in that, I suppose. I went to more photoshoots, other locations, indoors, outdoors, and even studio shoots. I loved the whole ambiance though I was still feeling somewhat useless. The models and stylist weren’t always the same, so I didn’t always have someone I know to hang out with, but I tried to keep up and make friends with all the new faces, which wasn’t always so easy, or fun. Some days felt like I’m hanging out with friends, and it was incredible, other days seemed like the minutes were refusing to pass, stuck, that’s what I was. On photoshoots its usual to face some difficulties, sometimes everything just goes wrong. Like that day we 18
During a shoot one day Moe wanted to shoot a necklace on one of the models backs. After prepping the model Moe took one look at her back and called the stylist, he didn’t like the model’s back, he found it “not sexy enough”. They got the other model and her back had pimple scars all over, “too much photoshop, it won’t do” he said. “I’ve an idea” said the stylist and she whispered something into Moe’s ear, then suddenly I found them both looking at me. “What?” I asked them, I couldn’t understand why they were looking at me, I thought I was meant to come up with an alternative idea for the shot. Moe scratched his head in the most adorable way ever, as though he was encouraging his brain to gather up thoughts and build up an idea or something. “Can you do it?” Moe asked me. “Do what? I’m not sure, maybe you can just take the shot on the second model’s back and photoshop it, I think it could work, she has a nice back. Or you could...” Moe cut me off by saying “No, I mean could you model the necklace for us?” I was surprised by the request, I never modelled before “Me?! Why don’t you just photoshop the model’s back?” The stylist jumped in “You know he hates to photoshop his shots”. Moe added “You should know that by now, I told you before I do minor fixes to my work, I like it to be as natural as possible. Come on, don’t be shy, and if you want I can make sure your face doesn’t show in the picture. What do you think?” I tried to argue my way out of it, but they were too convincing. Frankly I didn’t really mind, I was just shy and a little worried that I wouldn’t do a good job, I never really posed for a camera before, and with all those people staring at me, I felt awkward. The stylist prepped me, and everything was set. I was instructed on where and how to stand. I felt strange standing this side of the shoot. I wasn’t comfortable under the spotlight that I couldn’t even do that simple pose they asked me to do. My cheeks started to burn up, I was getting frustrated, embarrassed, and stressed from all the people telling me what to do. I guess Moe felt my frustration, and he called for a break and asked me to wait. Everyone left, it was quite, and we were all alone.

IDENTITY MARWA ANSWERS
LOVE TRIANGle... ME, HIM & MUSIC!
Dear Marwa,
I have been dating a DJ for 2 years now, and we are so in love. The problem is, he’s more than obsessed with music, and it’s driving him crazy! I just wish he felt that passionate about me so that I wouldn’t be that jealous. I really do enjoy his music, appreciate his talent, and always support him, but lately I’ve been feeling so neglected since music is all he talks and thinks about. Last week, I changed my Facebook profile picture to a cute picture of the both of us and added a caption saying how much I love him, while he changed his to a picture of Tiesto, his favourite DJ, and also added a caption saying he’s his favourite person alive! Shouldn’t I be his favourite person alive? I’m really trying to support him as much as I can but he keeps making it harder. I even thought about leaving him for a while in hopes that he might realize what I’m worth and that I’m also important to him, even more than his music. I am clueless Marwa, Please help! Sincerely, Sarah. Hello Sarah, Dating a man with a passion for something is an amazing experience! Just think of the sparkle in his eyes and the vivacity in his voice when he talks about music! I know that you want to come first and I understand that you get jealous of his musical icons but look at it this way; he would be totally unable to love you if that passion was stifled or killed. He is the 20

man you are in love with because of this fire within. You are not neglected! He talks about music with you! He shares his interests and findings with you! You are the first person he comes to with news or something to share! He is including you in all aspects of his life but in his own way. Do not let jealousy of “a passion” ruin your relationship. Just be happy that he is alive from within and throbbing with love on all fronts :) As for the incident that you mentioned; why do you expect him to be you? Why is he supposed to copy your actions? Your Facebook page is yours and his page is his! You chose to put a picture of the two of you and he made a different choice. It is his right as an individual to express himself in “his space” as he wishes. I know his choice made you look bad in front of your common friends but your relationship is way more solid than that! You have been together for two years and you both are happy! Just stay happy and make sure you do not give in to negative advice! Advice like leaving him till he realizes what he is missing and making him feel guilty and miserable for not being loving enough will only alienate him! He will feel that he is not man enough for you and will just back off! Please do not play those games! Love him as he is! Accept his flame and let him shine! My last word of advice to you is: Be happy! Yes! YOU! Be happy as a person and do not depend on him gratifying you in any way.

IDENTITY’S BEAUTY TIPS
Summer Skin & Hair Problems
Problem: SUNBURN Prevention is the first line of defense—and new SPF technology makes shielding your skin at the beach or pool easier than ever. But hey, no one (and no sunscreen) is perfect and sometimes burns happen. Solution: Ice-cold compresses can reduce the pain and cool your skin. But if you’re not able to get relief at home, see a doctor. Problem: EMBATTLED BIKINI LINE Whether you opt for a one-piece or two-piece, the area between your legs is going to get exposed— and sometimes the necessary upkeep can have not-so-fun side effects (think ingrown hairs or painful waxing). Solution: Shaving with a sharp blade every other day using a calming oatmealbased gel; help pesky ingrowns wriggle out with a salicylic acid scrub or topical antibiotic. If you prefer waxing but hate the sting, try the wince-free hair removal.
Solved! By: Sara Sami - Makeup Artist
Problem: UNEVEN SKIN TONE While increased sun exposure can cause fair-skinned faces to freckle, darker complexions are also vulnerable. Solution: Don’t sunbathe. Even a slight tan represents injury to your dermis so keeping up with your sunscreen-slathering duties is a must; a formula with SPF 30 or higher should be reapplied every couple of hours.
Problem: FRIZZY HAIR Depending on where you live, summer can mean hotter, more humid air—which can wreak havoc with defenseless, frizz-prone strands. Solution: When styling, use a ceramic blow-dryer with a diffuser for fast, smooth results and less heat damage. Finish with a product that’s specially formulated to repel moisture from the humid air (we like L’Oréal EverSleek Frizz Taming Crème Serum).
Problem: PARCHED LIPS If you thought dry lips were only a cold-weather issue, think again! Drier climates can still cause puckers to shrivel and time outdoors can lead to burning. Solution: Skip medicated menthol- or camphor-based balms. The tingle is intoxicating, but these formulas will dry lips over time. Instead, look for salves and glosses with soothing ingredients like shea butter and beeswax. SPF is also a must—especially when wearing high-shine gloss, which tends to attract more UV rays because of its reflective shimmer; Avon’s new SPF 15 formula is a smart choice. 26
IDENTITYJUNE 2013
Problem: BLEMISHES Pimples can happen yearround but extra oil, heat, and sweat make them more prolific in summer months. And, unfortunately, they’re not limited to the face. Solution: Regardless of where acne crops up, the treatment plan is the same: Use a glycolic or salicylicacid cleanser and make sure everything you apply to your skin—from makeup and facial soap to body wash and sunscreen—is oil-free so you don’t further clog pores. Problem: Heat Rash When temperatures and humidity levels rise, skin heats up and flushing can occur on any area of the body—with or without a bumpy, inflamed appearance. Problem: ECZEMA This skin condition— characterized by dry, scaly discolored skin that may or may not itch—is commonly caused by stress and heat. It tends to show up around the feet, elbows, knees, neck, and underarms. “Eczema is right up there with acne and affects millions of people,”. Solution: Avoid triggers like perfumes and detergents, which can make the irritation worse, and opt for gentle fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers. If eczema is severe, topical or oral cortisone can help.
Solution: Apply a topical over-thecounter hydrocortisone cream for three days to bring down the inflammation. If that doesn’t help, see a dermatologist for a prescription-strength hydrocortisone or antifungal, depending on what caused the rash.
Problem: BUG BITES Mosquitoes are summer’s biggest pests— and the swelling and itching that occur after being bitten by them can range from mild to severe. Solution: Mosquitoes thrive in areas where standing water is present; they’re also attracted to body odor and high skin temperatures. Invest in a good bug repellent. If you’re too late and become the unsuspecting (and unprepared) victim of an attack, avoid the urge to itch and apply an ice pack and/or over-the-counter hydrocortisone product for quick relief. W -HILE THINKING OF THE TOP FOUR DJS IN TOWN, WE COULDN’T HELP BUT THINK OF AHMED SHAWKY. HE HAS BEEN PLAYING IN CAIRO’S FAVOURITE NIGHT SPOTS FOR A WHILE NOW, AND HIS CROWD KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER. HIS DOWNLOADABLE SETS CALLED “ENROUTE” HAVE BEEN A BIG HIT FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. HIS INNOVATIVE DJ ROUTINES AND CREATIVE ON-STAGE ANTICS HAVE MADE HIM A FAVOURITE OF CROWDS ALL OVER CAIRO. HERE IS A CONVERSATION WE HAD WITH THE TALENTED DJ WHERE HE STARTED BY TELLING US ABOUT HIS LONG JOURNEY. Born and raised in Cairo got into the German system. After that i flew to Switzerland to get my bachelor’s degree in hotel management (Les Roches). Right now, I am very close to launching a website that my friend (Karim Reda) and I have been working on for almost a year called kash trip, it is actually a booking portal

That’s interesting… But when did you actually come to find your passion for music and DJing? Well, we all have THE PASSION for music, But DJing... it just came
along when I was 14, maybe? I used to walk around with my first CD case labeled DJ SHAWKY 1, but I couldn’t call myself a DJ back then. The technique itself, as far as I remember, was horrible haha! But I do remember being the person in charge of music among my friends. But
with time, I started gaining more confidence, and that’s when I started asking my DJ friends about their techniques and began mixing at home until I got the hold of it. Wow, you started really young then! But when did you actually start spinning and mixing live? When I got to Switzerland, this is when I actually started learning the real technique. I took the ladder from waaaaay down. First year there I started “mixing” at a café called “CDV” where they paid me in meals. Then slowly the year after I got to mix in the school’s pub, YESSSSS, but got fired on my first night… Yeah, apparently I had to play more reggae ton. But to be honest, that didn’t stop me. After a few adjustments, I started mixing again at other cool places. But then I got back to Cairo, and it was a whole new different ladder to start with. So, yeah, too many bumps on my road! Hahaha! Good thing you didn’t give up! But Shawky, tell us more about your favourite genre… Do you usually play tracks from that genre? There are too many genres these days that are a bit difficult to identify, but since now we are about to start summer, I’m more into funky/indie/electronic/ house with of course some progressive house if the mood shoots up. The thing is people get a bit confused with what I actually mix live because of my ENroute episodes (sets) I make every month or two, the purpose is to just mute out and listen to calm melodic vocals and ends with more upbeat funk. So yeah, I use the second part of the set into live action too! Yeah, you should know we always listen to your ENroute

sets in our office! What do you think of the clubbing scene in Cairo? How does it affect you as a DJ? I like it; it’s a fast growing one! I remember when there was only one guy running the show then there was only one club… but now you have more venues, more events, and more DJs, which leads to more opportunities! We think so too! Do you regard being a DJ as a career path or just a hobby? I believe production is the only way to turn it from a hobby to a career. I actually decided to take a course very soon, but at the moment I’m focusing more on the website we’re about to launch… KASH Trip… KASH Trip… free ad right? Hahaha yeah feel free! But let’s ask some fun questions now. If you were a cartoon character, who would you be? That’s a tough one… mmm… all cartoon characters are so active… SNOOPY? Knowing you personally, Snoopy does resemble you… Lying on the roof, gazing at the sky, so you Shawky! What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done? 5 years ago – talent show – Switzerland – we were four guys… dancing to Lady Marmalade… I was Christina Aguilera, next question please. Ouch! We have to see that… pictures? No kidding! What’s the most played song on your music library? Yuri Kane - Right Back (Pasha Grabko Remix)&Within and Without by Washed Out. N CORPORATING A WIDE RANGE OF MUSICAL STYLES FROM UPLIFTING TECH HOUSE, TO DISCO OR EVEN REGGAE, MISTY & HAFEZ LOVE TO SURPRISE AN AUDIENCE WITH A FORGOTTEN GEM, AN UNKNOWN BANGER, OR A FRESH TAKE ON A WELLKNOWN HIT. together? And did you face any hardships starting? Hafez: I started DJing around 5 years ago. I was always into house music and this one time a very good friend of mine bought a DJ set and since then I decided that I was going to start learning how to mix. Misty on the other hand has been in the scene for quite a long time (around 12 years ago) and one day we just met at this high school party and from there we started having studio sessions together and that’s when we decided to form a duo. The hardship we faced was probably finding the right balance between what we want to play and what the crowd would like to listen to.
Misty: We’re still students both at AUC. I’m a Political Science major while Hafez studies Economics. I like to spend my time at home watching movies and shows and Hafez is the social butterfly that we all know him to be. Between University and gigs we probably just stay hour after hour working in the studio on our tracks with our labels.
Speaking of what the crowd would like to listen to. What is your favourite genre? Do you usually play tracks from that genre? Misty: we play whatever sounds good to us. We’re not confined to one genre of music. If we hear a reggae or disco track that we like we’ll just stick some drums to it and play it live. But mainly, our music is based around uplifting tech house. Hafez: Usually my music is more percussive and upbeat than

I’m the type of person that loves crazy patterned drums since I grew up listening to ‘Ibiza’ island type of house while Misty is more on the synthetic, melodic 80’s disco feel. What is good about this though is that we combine both together in our sets and we come out with a perfect blend of both. Yeah, and that’s what makes you guys unique! What do you think of the “clubbing” scene in Cairo and how does it affect you as a DJ? Misty: The clubbing scene in Cairo is an odd one when you compare it to other places. The problem here is that the scene is small so you end up playing to the same people just in different venues and clothes. I do honestly think though, that this is good in a sense because it challenges DJ’s here to have to deliver something different to the crowd every time and I think this is a quality that good Egyptian DJ’s have that many international acts don’t possess.

And what is the most embarrassing thing that you’ve done? Misty: Probably at one of the parties where we were DJing. We were both having a lot of fun so we left the decks and started dancing with our friends and left the song playing and I guess we both expected each other to be responsible enough to go back up but obviously that didn’t happen so the music stopped and there was an awkward minute of silence at the party. Hahaha! Way to go boys! Now tell us, what can’t you leave home without? Hafez: Boxers maybe? I think Misty would have to take anything to do with Star Wars with him…

-HERE ARE MANY WAYS FOR A TRUE LOVER OF MUSIC TO SHARE THEIR PASSION. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE WITH AN INSTRUMENT OR EVEN A VOICE. ANOTHER DJ WHO HAS MADE QUIET A NAME FOR HIMSELF AND HAS A WELL ROUNDED CROWD THAT FOLLOW HIM EVERYWHERE, IT’S DJ MOHASSEB! WE GOT TO CHAT WITH HIM AND GET TO KNOW HIM PERSONALLY. WE GOT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT HE DOES, WHAT HE HOPES TO BECOME AND WHAT CLOTHING ITEM IS A MUSTHAVE FOR HIM! HE STARTED BY TELLING US HOW HE MADE IT TO THIS DAY… I started by listening to music when I was 12, mostly trance (My Favourite Genre). As I started to get more into music, I made my own sets to try it out with friends and at house parties. I received good reviews from people who 40

listened to my sets and my friends asked me to try out DJing at different places. The first real DJ experience was at Amici North Coast then I started playing at Cairo Jazz Club and it all started from there.
That’s a good start. Where else do you play at now? I’m very loyal to Cairo Jazz Club and that’s where I always DJ. The crowd there really enjoys and understands music. I did play at the opening of Level though.
Speaking of Level, we heard you’re the one who designed the place, is that true? Yeah, it is. Besides being a DJ, I’m also an architect and a sales manager in Sodic. So yeah, it was a pleasure designing Level. Wow you must be busy like all the time. And what do you think of the clubbing scene in Cairo? It’s taking over the country! There are several parties on a weekly basis and people seem to be more into music than before. Now DJs are having a certain crowd or fans. Even the number of DJ’s increased (Software made it easier to mix songs; which I’m totally against) but very few of them actually have an “Identity”, helwa di? Identity? Haha yes helwa! Are there many Ups and Downs to being a DJ? For me, I didn’t face a lot of negative experiences at first. In general, people don’t really understand the process behind being a DJ but that is starting to change now. Now fans follow the DJ since they admire his music and they are what keep him going. The key is to keep on improving and delivering better sets. That’s a great advice. So were you ever in a situation where the crowd was a little hard to please? Yes. Egyptians in general enjoy listening to music they are familiar with and know the lyrics to. If I feel like the crowd is slowing down, I play a classic with my own mix to capture the attention

of the crowd and get them back on their feet. Which part of being a DJ really makes you happy? I always feel really happy playing at Jazz every time. Also when people recognize your work; I feel like I really got to them and it feels great! But if you had the chance to play at other venues, would you? As I mentioned before, I’m very loyal to Cairo Jazz Club since they take care of me and everything I do; my marketing, parties and everything, plus they really appreciate good music which is something I respect. Do you think DJing could become a career? I mean can you make a living out of it? If the DJ produces music then yes, he can take it as a career. And yes, money wise it is very possible to live on just being a DJ. Especially if you are one of the top DJ’s in Cairo. I’m actually about to start taking production courses and take the next step! For anyone starting up, what advice would you give them? For anyone starting up, they should really learn how being a DJ works and learn how to mix on actual mixers not just on software, so you can really understand the craft. Try out their sets at home first and then when they are on solid ground, they can perform at a venue. Feedbacks are always important to listen to, whether negative or positive. IDENTITY JUNE 2013

I thought about it but of course the influence of the Egyptian culture kicked in. My parents told me to study something and keep practicing my talents on the side, as a hobby. I really didn’t regret my decision to study at a nonmusical college. It developed my personality and gave me necessary skills that benefit me in many ways today.
become versatile and able to work on different projects. And was that the plan from the start? My original plan was to study dentistry. I even took the test to apply and everything but ended up not going. I went to a French university here in Cairo. I started playing with bands and was a TV presenter all during exams and school. People kept telling me to focus on school and get perfect grades but my idea was to get an average grade yet develop my talent and skills. Actually the dean just called me and she mentioned how I was right doing what I did all along and not give up on my dream and talent. Actually we haven’t talked in years, it’s weird
That’s great! We know that “3agamista” was your first movie soundtrack, how did you land such an opportunity? I didn’t continue with the band I played with at college and started playing various pieces on my own. I bought a high end piano back then that allowed me to compose. This piano was the reason I got the movie. I composed various tracks and eventually my friend Sherif Ramzy, who’s also an actor, asked me to compose music for his website, which was a big deal early 2000s. He really liked my style and composition and advised me to work on movies. He set up a meeting with the movie director who kept skimming through my pieces without interest at first – which was discouraging for me- and finally he listened
to a track he really liked and I got the job. After that I started working on commercials for big corporate companies and finally TV programs. The song “Qatari habibi” that was played on Bassem Youssef’s show was a big hit! What do you think makes a song catchy? Some people don’t know that I work with Bassem Youssef on his show (El Bernameg) in general. I compose all of the show’s music for him. I think that “Qatari” was such a success because of the show itself and the production. The show, the choir and Bassem conducting in a maestro suit along with the music is what really made it pop! Speaking of El Bernameg TV show… Tell us about your experience working with Bassem Youssef... Aside from his charisma and talent, Bassem Youssef is a star. ell us more about who you are and what you do… My name is Khaled Nassef, I’m a musician, I like my steak medium, I love nature & outdoor spaces, boots, scarves & visors.
I love boots and scarves too! And how did you come to find your talent and love for music? I’ve always been into music when I was young, I used to take piano lessons and I listened to all genres. I used to do mix tapes for my friends and eventually started mixing very early in the days using just two Discmans. My friends bought me my first mixer for my 17th birthday so I started mixing at home and at small parties. But this never satisfied me. I wanted to express myself through my own productions and not just by playing tracks of other artists, that’s when I decided to go further. Many people say they always felt like they are “made” for something, is this how you feel? That’s for sure; music defines me. What do you think of the music industry in Egypt in general? I wouldn’t call it industry if you’re referring to the underground scene. But its definitely growing now and many of them are very talented actually. They just lack persistence, I can’t blame them much because the culture here affects growing artists greatly let alone the very limited portion of society that appreciate home grown music. Speaking of the underground scene, was it a challenge for you to start as a young singer? I actually started my music career abroad, I’m not sure if I would have taken that step if I lived here.

Freedom & the opportunities abroad definitely helped shift my life towards an artistic direction. What advice would you give young beginners who want a career in the music industry? I hope they are brave enough to face the challenge because it’s a tough one! They have to let go of all limitations and barriers and go wild, be different. Nothing is ever wrong with that. They need to know that they should live their life the way they want to live it, no matter how far away it is from the normal. If not they will end up regretting it when they are older. Living in an Egyptian culture, did your parents try to push you away from the music industry? Like to ask you to just take it as a hobby and find a “real” job? Yes, I don’t blame them though because it’s in our culture to be in a safe zone rather than experience anything new so I’d blame our culture. I couldn’t agree more! What about facing any personal challenges? Yes when I decided to quit the corporate life and let go of all the luxuries and went totally against the typical flow to chase my dream. That is very inspirational! I always love how people chase their dreams instead of settling. But you know, sometimes people’s feedback can be a little bit harsh, how do you deal with the feedback you get from people whether positive or negative? If it’s positive I really do appreciate it and show respect, people don’t usually do that for some annoying reason. And I honestly don’t do well when it’s negative because it’s usually never constructive. At the end of the day it’s a matter of taste and opinion. What do you think sets you apart from any other singer or song writer? I’m not just a singer/song writer; I also produce

my own tracks. I think that’s what defines me the most; I have a combination of things that as an artist allows me to stand out in the electronic music scene. So you produce music too, tell us more about that! Well I started my career by singing, I’ve worked with a few bands here and abroad but since I didn’t really play an instrument I couldn’t implement my taste in music. That’s when I decided to learn music production to make tracks entirely based on my own taste. Do you define yourself with one talent? You know such as “singer/song writer/ composer”? When working alone in the studio I’m all of them! When working with female vocalists for example I’m just a producer or a song writer depending on the case.
What are your aspirations from this point forward? I would like to increase my fan base and have more people listen to my type of music. I wish people here would be more open to that sort of music and appreciate it. What’s your proudest moment so far? Listening to my first original release titled “Things I Wrote”, on the radio for the first time and getting texts from my friends without me knowing its on air was definitely a proud moment. I bet it was! Did anything embarrassing ever happen to you as you performed? My first performance was by the pyramids in a huge international event called The Great Convergence; it was a total surprise we weren’t prepared and the equipment wasn’t set up properly for singers, I couldn’t hear myself… just imagine! We are excited for the release as well guys! Let us start off by telling us what you have been up to lately… Razan: Well I’m still shooting my scenes in the upcoming Ramadan series “Hekayet Hayah” with the beautiful Ghada Abdel Razek. 3rd single with Razan, and now I’m back at studios working on the remaining tracks on my album, and hopefully would get it ready by the end of this year.
So it was Amro’s idea to collaborate on a duet? Amro: Yeah, Razan was the first and actually the only one who came across my mind for this duet, she kept coming across my mind with lots of different ideas, I think the best thing about Razan is that she is flexible with all kind of ideas and she clicks with any level of fun and madness. After all this is why everyone loves her. Amro, you mentioned this was a Dubstep song. Why did you choose this genre? Amro: Well I’m the first electronic singer

here in Egypt so, I mainly sing house, so since dub step is the new best thing I wanted to give it a try and be the first to have my original dub step song. Where did the inspiration behind the lyrics and music come from? Amro: All lyrics to all my songs are actually things I’ve experienced;
my music is just bits and pieces of my life. And can you both relate to the story of the lyrics? Razan: I guess whoever listens to the song will relate to it somehow. Amro: Exactly! Each one of us has been broken or hurt at least once in their life, right? What are your favorite genres in general? Do you have a favorite song lately? Amro: I love all kinds of music except Metal! Recently I’ve been listening to ‘”Kelly Sweet - Ashes of my paradise” it’s on my repeat at the moment. Razan: I witnessed the early beginning of Dub Step back in the United Kingdom and loved it ever since, I’m also a fan of RNB. But my all-time favorite song has to be “FAME”; this song never dies. I also like “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys & “Diamonds” by Rihanna. Both of these songs have the Girl Power factor which I like. Tell us what’s the vision behind the “Breaking me down” video? Razan: Breaking Me Down is a classy energetic alive dancing hit. The whole clip revolves around the love stories people go through and how they deal with their loved ones; one moment they are deeply in love, the other moment they want to kill each other. It’s always great to follow your dreams and aspire for more. What advice would you give for others who are starting up? Razan: What matters the most is to never stop trying and to never give up. People might fall and fail and this should only make them stronger and more determined. Believe in yourself and your dreams, work hard, do your best and you’ll, sooner or later, reach your goal :) Amro: Never give up on your dreams, never say never, and always take risks; you never know where they’re going to take you until you take them. KILL ME WITH WORDS!
BEST LYRICS EVER By: Sandra Rizk
LYRICS MATTER. WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO SAY THIS; IT’S A WELLKNOWN FACT THAT A LYRIC OF A SONG HAS A GREAT IMPACT ON THE WAY YOU FEEL. NO MATTER WHAT STATE OF MIND YOU ARE IN, YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND A SONG TO RELATE TO. HERE IS A COMPILATION OF THE BEST SONG LYRICS WE FOUND FOR YOU! “You are the last drink I never should drunk, You are the body hidden in the trunk, You are the habit I can’t seem to quit, You are my secrets on the front page every week, You are the car I never should have bought, You are the train I never should have caught, You are the cut that makes me hide my face, You are the party that makes me feel my age.” Pulp - Like a Friend
“I can’t erase it from my mind. I just replay it, over, think of it all the time. But I don’t want to imagine, words you spoke to her that night. Naked bodies look like porcelain, you both knew I’d be bleeding inside.... Did she make your heart beat faster than I could? Did she give you what you hoped for? Oh, nights of loveless love, I hope it made you feel good, Knowing how much I adored you.” DaughterLove “A
thousand miles seems pretty far But they’ve got planes and trains and cars I’d walk to you if I had no other way.” Plain white T’s- Hey there Delilah 50

IDENTITY’S PIECE OF WRITING
EMBRACE YOUR
DREAMS, EMBRACE YOUR

LIFE
hen I was first asked to write a feature this month, my excitement for having my words published was so overwhelming that thinking of an idea for the feature seemed like a real challenge! The theme behind this issue and the interviews we have conducted throughout the month inspired me about this topic. It seems that with every successful talent there were challenges at first. It’s not surprising that many face different circumstances before they get to where they want to be. However, I found that there was a common challenge faced by many Egyptians; the challenge of facing a deeply embedded culture. It is very common for young Egyptians to have their path laid ahead by their parents. Whether

choosing a certain sport for them to play, all the way to choosing which university major they study. It seems that very little decisions –if any at all- are left for the growing teenagers to make on their own. Not only does this affect their ability to be independent but tramples their dreams and aspirations. The conditioning of parents are being passed down from one generation to the other to the extent where you find a whole family of doctors, engineers or teachers. What about individuality? What about talent? Interviewing many talents this issue, I have come to realise that they all share one thing; they stuck for what they believed in. They didn’t give up on their talent, their dream of becoming something other than what their parents had foreseen. Whether their parents were behind their decision at first or not, they developed their own individuality and learned what they really wanted and what they can offer. Now imagine if they hadn’t done that and went with their parents path… Let me tell you a rather personal story:
Mahmoud, a young boy with a beautiful strong voice and a dream of becoming a performing artist. As he expressed his desires to his parents, they shut him down completely and dismissed any ideas of pursuing a career in the music industry. He didn’t give up though, he went ahead to take classes and develop his talent to become one of the lead Egyptian opera singers. The road to getting where he was wasn’t an easy one and the field he dove into presented many obstacles. Had he listened to his parents and didn’t follow what he believed was his true calling, I wouldn’t have had a dad who is a role model I look up to.
(who will probably grow up to be clones of their parents). “Ya benty mass comm. 3ashan ashal 7aga!” – No only the parents influence our decisions growing up, our friends too. After the dilemma of choosing “3elmy wala adaby wala adaby mot3alem or whatever” you are faced with a decision of choosing which college to go to. Engineering, medicine, business or mass communication, are just some of the obvious choices your friends will probably choose. The pressure of not knowing what you really want to study pushes some people
“BEING GIFTED AT SOMETHING IS AMAZING AND TO IGNORE THAT GIFT IS TO IGNORE ONE’S DESTINY.” The point of the story is not to praise my father or talk about his accomplishments, it’s merely a personal reflection of (I believe) almost every Egyptian household. Many parents just want to have the “Ebny doctor/mohandes” moment and I get it! The allure given by old Egyptian movies to doctors and engineers is a reflection of that period in time which is enough to make every parent want that for their children. Both careers are very respectable but there are also other career paths and industries that are as respectable and prominent. Why just stick to two main fields? Why not have generations of children who go after a field they actually belong to and enjoy? “Study 7aga 3aleha el 2ema w e3mel el enta 3ayzo 3al ganb” - I don’t think the sentence needs much explanation. I believe every young adult heard this sentence as they faced the decision of choosing what to study at college. Actually I won’t throw the blame on the parents here. If you really believe in what you want to do then you can convince your parents. If they are beyond that point then actually the “side hobby” won’t be the best option, but at least you would be doing what you love. But of course the rebellious/hormonal stage of life requires you to slam the door, shut yourself out and forget all about it! Oh How I DON’T miss those days… What many of us don’t consider is that our parents were once children and were raised by their parents in a certain way and so it’s only evident they don’t really understand what you go through as a kid of this time. Some parents stay hip and up to date with the happenings while others have a more traditional approach to life. Either way as a parent, they will always fear and worry about their children’s future and that’s why they tend to push the stable and safe approach to life. Which for them, guarantees the continuation of the family; getting a steady job, getting married and repeating the circle of life by producing children
into just going to a college where most of their friends are going. They usually end up feeling out of place, some change colleges and start over while others just zombie on to get their degree. Why follow the flock when you can find your own path? Go ahead and dive deeper to explore more and find what you like, take time and figure it out. It might feel like you’re wasting time but eventually you will get how critical that “me” time was to your future. Being gifted at something is amazing and to ignore that gift is to ignore one’s destiny. The choice shouldn’t be whether to embrace your talents or not, but whether to choose it as a career or a hobby. Whether you dream of becoming a musician, an actor, a writer or even a comedian the choice is up to you and so are the rewards and consequences. One of the hardest challenges anyone with a talent face, is what we now call “The haters”. Those trying to bring you down and constantly give you negative feedback. The sad fact is that some of them can actually be family members or friends, forcing you to question yourself and your talent. Thing is, in any industry, you will run into people who just break you down for absolutely no reason other than to break you down. Will you let them? NO, you won’t! However, it’s important to listen to all feedback and work to improve and prevent further negative feedback. The key here is to know the difference between constructive criticism and harsh words. “Enta kan 3andak 7a2” – that is probably the most rewarding comment anyone can hear after following their desires. Following your parents or even in some cases your friends path might get you a stable and safe career but at the end is it what really makes you happy? Is it really where you belong? In an era of political reform and increased awareness about one’s rights, I only hope that more and more Egyptians find their own individuality, their own identity. 1 2 3 4 5 6
Get excited, Call your friends and day dream about an amazing night! Figure out an outfit depending on what type of party you’re going to. SHOWER, use shower gel and for heaven’s sake spray some deodorant before you head out! Did you spray that deodorant? Are you sure? No? DO IT AGAIN. Get dressed, let go of all your stress and head out for a great night! Feel fresh and proud that you’re not scaring everyone out of the party because of your smelly aura. That’s it! The secret is out. Spread the word and help prevent more horrifying stories about bumping into someone as you make your way into the crowd.
