New Conference Center opens in Gastonia
P
rojected positive outlook for local economy
Responding to the national call to invest in America by supporting local communities, Gastonia Conference Center is committed to supporting and strengthening the city of Gastonia and Gaston County through its popular Gastonia Partnership Program where local businesses can apply for the opportunity to work with the Center’s clients, share resources, and further invest in the community. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and provide the most jobs to local residents. Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers since they are more invested in the community’s future. The “buy local and partner local” approach allows friends, neighbors, businesses, organizations, and civic groups to benefit from a more vibrant local economy. Independent studies reveal that buying from independent, locally owned businesses generates a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and the local tax base. Gastonia Conference Center has already booked two bridal shows that will showcase local bridal fashions, hotels, limousines, florists, photographers, caterers, printers, designers, and event planners to as many as 300 guests at each show. Other corporate business already booked at Gastonia Conference Center shows positive revenue generation and economic impact for the area through the Gastonia Partners in hotel rooms, food & beverage, and audio/visual services.

Positive Economic Projection With the development of Gastonia Conference Center nearing the completion of the construction phase,Tony Swainey, General Manager at the Center, is projecting strong, positive economics of the advanced bookings and how it ties in to the bigger picture of supporting local business and strengthening the local economy: out build, and out educate. A boost for local jobs Swainey reports that since the groundbreaking ceremony in October 2010, the project has created 175 non-construction job opportunities including local caterers, rental companies, staffing companies, florists, photographers, etc. General contractor, BEAM Construction Co., of Cherryville, NC reports a team of 31 subcontractors, many of which are based in Gaston County, including Robinson Sawyer, surveyors; John E. Jenkins, grading, curb and cutter subcontractor; J&G Fencework, fences; Dixie Glass Co, glass subcontractor; Jourdan Acoustical, acoustical ceiling subcontractor; Gastonia Plumbing & Heating; and Dallas Electric. This represents a tremendous financial boost to the city of Gastonia. Other North Carolina subcontractors include brick masons, electricians, audio/visual companies, concrete, steel, and drywall suppliers, fire and security systems, music systems, site developers, advertisers, marketing and public relations firms, technology specialists, furniture manufacturers, and many others from the region. Swainey, with more than 35 years of international hospitality experience, reports very strong pre-opening numbers with a mixture of social, corporate, fraternal, charities, religious, and educational bookings with an encouraging number of booking inquiries. To further support local business, many of these bookings represent additional revenue to the city of Gastonia through the Gastonia Conference Center’s Partnership Program. The Gastonia Partnership Program offers local business the opportunity to share resources and demonstrates a commitment to supporting the growth of local businesses and the overall economic development of the Gastonia area.
building materials, energy-efficient lighting and a fully automated lighting control system. Materials and Resources Throughout the course of the 13-month construction phase, more than 75% of construction waste was recycled or salvaged. Indoor Environment The indoor environment was designed as a completely non-smoking facility and includes electronic monitoring of air delivery and the use of CO2 sensors. An efficient air quality management plan was utilized throughout the construction process and used low-emitting materials for adhesives and sealants, paint and coatings, flooring systems and wood products.

When owner Kelly Nichols approached DJ Kevin Brown about doing a Tuesday Karaoke Night at Flip Flops, no one could have imagined just how big it would become.Traditionally the slowest night of the week,Tuesday nights in Gaston County’s night spots are usually a break even night at best. A few bars have tried to have acoustic music, but nothing has stuck around, that is until Kevin Brown and Flip Flops teamed up for “Karaoke Showcase.” It took a while and a lot of effort on Kevin’s part, but it has suddenly become THE thing to do in Gaston County on Tuesday night. Says Kevin,“I’ve been a musician all my life and a DJ since 1985. My first gig as a DJ was subbing for the regular DJ at a Beach Music dance. I think I made $25 for 4 hours and I’ve not stopped since. My parents had an old Wurlitzer juke box and I remember pretending to DJ as a little kid. It’s in my blood.” Playing drums in the smoking hot band Eclipse, and being a Magistrate Judge leaves little time for play, but Kevin’s idea of fun is getting people up to sing on Tuesday Nights. From “Alice Cooper” in full make up to “ZZ Top” in full beards, Flip Flops hosts some of the best area entertainers and those of us that just pretend to be. (I’ve even been known to belt out a Neil Diamond tune or two.) Adds Kevin,“I have over 55,000 songs and Karaoke songs on my computer, if you want to get up and sing it, I’m probably gonna have the song. I’m amazed at how good some of our singers are, but mostly its normal folks looking to just have a good time. I love it when someone gets up for the first time. They are a little nervous, but they get into it by the end.” The crew at Flip Flops state that Tuesday Nights have been the best night as far as business goes. Says long time server Leslie Green,“I love Tuesday night karaoke, the people are wonderful; everybody’s singing and having a great time. It’s become like an event in Gaston County. I’ve never seen a Tuesday Night so packed anywhere like this.” So, if you’re sitting home and looking for something fun to do, how about coming down to Flip Flops in Gastonia on a Tuesday night. It’s a “Good Thing!” If you are on Facebook, be sure to check out Flip Flops page for the latest info on all the other “Good Things” going on there!

McAdenville: Christmas Town USA
T
he quiet little town of McAdenville, which lies along the South Fork River in Gaston County N.C., comes alive in spectacular fashion each year as Christmas draws near. Almost overnight, the small textile town is transformed into Christmas Town, USA . In 1956, the McAdenville Men s Club conceived the idea of using lights to decorate a few trees around the McAdenville Community Center. With the permission of town officials and Mr.W. J. Pharr, President of Pharr Yarns, nine trees were decorated the first year. Mrs. Pharr suggested the use of red, white and green lights, the traditional colors of Christmas. Later, at Mrs. Pharr s suggestion, the trees around the lake were decorated and the manger scene became the focal point of the Christmas decorations. The reaction to these early efforts was so favorable that each year the number of decorated trees has been increased. By 2004, more than 375 trees were giving off a warm holiday glow to the town and surrounding area. Today, and for more than twenty years, Mr. J. M. Carstarphen, Chief Executive Officer of Pharr Yarns, has been instrumental in carrying on this tradition. His support, along with the continuing cooperation of company management and townspeople alike, has ensured that McAdenville will be a special place at a very special time of year when almost every home and evergreen tree proclaim the birth of Jesus.
The more than 375 trees which were decorated last year range in height from 6 feet to more than 90 feet. Only live trees are used. The number of lights on individual trees varies with the height, diameter and fullness of the trees. As few as 500 lights and as many as 5,000 lights may be used on one tree. 9

One of the favorite spots for viewers is the lake which is situated near the heart of town. Here are 33 trees, ranging in size from 12 to 40 feet, which ring the lake. The reflection of the lights in the water adds to the beauty of the scene. A fountain, located in the center of the lake, jets water 75 feet into the air. Lights shining on the fountain go through a sequence of red, green, blue and amber about once every ten seconds. At the lake, a 46 foot wide lighted image of Old Man Winter blows snowflakes into the air.

FAQ How much does it cost...
The light display is FREE, no cost whatsoever.
Can I walk through... Yes, walking is a great way to see the Christmas lights, the decorated homes and to hear the sounds of the church chimes.
Where can I park and what is the cost...
While much emphasis has been placed on the lighting of trees, this represents only a portion of the effort that goes into the preparation for Christmas. The town residents play a big part as they decorate their doors in original styles according to their own personal feelings. This gives a special expression of Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas from the townspeople to their visitors. A life-size nativity scene and life-size figures of carolers, complete with music, add to the effect. More than 200 wreaths adorn lampposts throughout the town. Santa and his reindeer, a display that is nine feet tall and seventy feet long, are featured as part of the annual tradition.
Although the look of McAdenville will be different for the next several years due to work progressing on the development of several new neighborhoods in town, McAdenville and Pharr Yarns are dedicated to continuing the Christmas Town tradition for years to come.
Will my vehicle be safe... While the town of McAdenville cannot guarantee your vehicle will be totally safe, police do patrol the streets each night.
If I decide to drive through instead of walking, how long does it take once I enter town... That depends, in order for visitors to see the homes and the thousands of lights etc, vehicles move very slowly through town. The route is approximately two (2) miles long, on weekends it may take 30-45 minutes to drive the two miles, most weeknights it will take less time.
How many routes through town, and which is the best one to see all of the lights... There is only one route through Christmas Town. If you enter town from Interstate 85, once you get to the town limits, continue through town until you reach U.S. Highway 29-74.At this point you will leave Christmas Town. If you enter town from U.S. 29-74 (coming from the Charlotte area) continue through town until you reach Interstate 85.At this point you will leave Christmas Town .
}
Spot and flood lights are used in varying colors throughout the town to accent the scenes and to give special effects to the trees and surrounding scenery. Chrono-chime bells, mounted on a 30 foot structure located at the Community Center, play Christmas carols during the Christmas season.
We have three parking areas in town; 1. A parking lot is located behind the McAdenville Baptist Church/Caromont Clinic. 2. Another lot is located behind the Village Restaurant. The Restaurant is located on Main Street in the small business area of town. 3. A large parking lot is located beside the lake in the heart of Christmas Town; feel free to park at any of these three locations at NO COST.

Tips for a
Better W
1. Tone up on the Treadmill While doing your cardio (walking flat, approximately 3.5 miles an hour) take 3-5 lb hand weights and do shoulder presses, bicep curls, tricep extensions, front laterals and tricep kickbacks about one minute each. This helps tone the upper body muscles while you tone the lower body muscles and get your heart rate up with your cardio. 2. Power up your Runs Wall sits added after a 20 minute run will help strengthen your quads, hamstrings and glutes while helping to build strength and endurance to these muscles faster. (Place back to a wall, feet should be shoulder length apart, squat--holding for between 30-60 seconds each time. Approximately 10 sets). 3. One-Toner Side step squats using a wood-chopper. (Holding a 8-10lb weighted ball, side chop with the ball to the opposite side of the body 10-15 reps, then switch legs). This uses your upper body muscles as well as the lower body muscles for a fast and complete workout in a minimal amount of time! 4. Yard Work Get outside and rake leaves. Shovel off that driveway! This is a great way to burn about 400 calories per hour! Remember to be safe and bend at your knees (not your back)! Always take into consideration the temperature, your own strength and endurance. Its OK to take a break, rest and then continue! 5. Physical Activity Anytime! Whether its crunches on a body ball while you’re watching the nightly news, a brisk walk in the parking lot on your lunch break or lifting light weights while sitting at your desk. All these little things help maintain oxygen flow to your heart and lungs, keeps your energy level up during the day and your muscles from getting stiff. This helps to keep the brain more active. 6. Jumping Rope One of the best cardio workouts ever!!!! If you can only jump 10 times this is great. You can always add more jumps as your energy, strength and endurance continues to grow. You can usually burn 30 calories per minute. 11

Workout 7. Don’t Skip the Carbs To some people this is a bad word---CARBS! This is your bodys instant energy source. You needs good carbs to get you through your day. Fruit, foods high in fiber, trail mix and any “brown” source (whole wheat bread, rice, sweet potatoes and whole wheat pasta) break down very slowly so your body uses these as energy sources not storage for fat. 8. Maximize Crunches A crunch uses your core to help stabilize the body and make your balance better. Feet should be flat on the floor, knees bent and the top half of the body should come up (chin to the ceiling and shoulder blades off the floor). Don’t tuck your head. Slowing this process down makes the ab muscles work twice as hard and help to build these core muscles much faster. 9. Revitalize the Push-up Do a regular push up, jump feet together, jump feet toward hands, and jump up! Try to do 6-8 reps with a 30-second rest period between each one. Modification would be a “girl pushup” (instead of the tops of the toes holding up your lower body you are on your knees). 10. Make reasonable Goals (these goals must be for you and YOU only) Re-vamp what your regular work out is at the current time. (walk 10 minutes longer, add 10 lbs more to your set of 3, add 5 more reps to your set of 10-12, etc) This can cause a break through in your metabolism, your calorie burning, strength and endurance. Muscles have memory, you need to be changing that workout up every 6-8 weeks! Eat 5-6 small meals a day, with a good combo of a lean protein, a serving of vegetables, and “good” carbs. Remember this is a healthy way of life not a quick fix. You can do this, I know YOU can! Get out there and Get healthy!

A BOOK THAT CAPTURES HEART AND SOUL OF McADENVILLE – CHRISTMAS TOWN USA cAdenville, NC January 5, 2011 – McAdenville Memories was published in honor of the J. M. Carstarphen Family and in memory of Mr. and Mrs. William James Pharr in recognition of their generous lifelong contributions to the McAdenville Community. For over seventy-one years Mr. and Mrs. William James Pharr and the J. M. Carstarphen family have constantly demonstrated their love for the community and the people of McAdenville.Their dedication, leadership and acts of philanthropy have enriched the lives of over four generations of McAdenville citizens and helped foster the preservation of a caring family oriented community. They have truly earned a place in the collective hearts and memories of the people of McAdenville. For more than 50 years, McAdenville has enjoyed a reputation as "Christmas Town, USA", but the rich history of this small community in Gaston County goes back much further than that. A pioneer in the textile industry in the South, McAdenville has played host to many firsts. Among these are the first electrical generator, the first bathtub, the first telephone in this entire area and the first kindergarten in the entire State. Its greatest heritage however, lies with the many people who have influenced or have been influenced by this place. This book was written to record the history of McAdenville’s greatest asset – its people. Unlike any other textile village or town in North Carolina, McAdenville was providentially blessed with honorable leaders who genuinely cared for the town, its citizens and employees. Mr. and Mrs. Pharr’s love for McAdenville was such that it created a living environment that empowered its citizens and employees to excel in every aspect of life. Not only were they persons of character with good work ethics but they embraced moral lifestyles which were defined by the local churches. In sports, they didn’t excel in just one sport, but in many, making a name for McAdenville in professional softball, baseball, swimming, bowling, as well as basketball and football. They were superb athletes who excelled in every sport they tried and were an inspiration to many. Undoubtedly, McAdenville is one of the greatest towns this world has ever seen. The photographs and history in this book gives an unprecedented glimpse into the past and the wonderful life we were so fortunate to live. At the book signing and dedication ceremony in McAdenville on December 17, 2010, Catherine Pharr Carstarphen (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William James Pharr) stated “This book captures the very soul of McAdenville”. John Gordon of Mount Holly said “This is a book that should be on the coffee table of every house. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Mikey Rankin of McAdenville said “I can’t get any work done because I can’t stop looking at the pictures in that book”. The McAdenville Memories Executive Committee Members (Georgia Andrews, Jim Ashworth, Sandra Brittain, Clyde "Buck" Hatley, Andy Howe, Jackie Jones, Phyllis Jones, Pat Leathco, Linda Payne, Shirley Rankin, Steve Rankin, Dick Roberts and Pam Smith) graciously agreed to provide this nine-hundred thirty-three page book to the public for an at-cost fee of $70.00. Maid hen meeting Shannon for the first time, the first thing you notice is her smile. She is stunningly attractive, witty, charming, and full of energy. She is certainly nothing like you would expect when you think of a traditional “Maid.” (I think of “Alice” of the Brady Bunch.) But make no mistake, when it comes to business, she is one shrewd customer. Her business, Mommy Maid Cleaning Service, has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years when so many other businesses have failed. We recently sat down and talked about what it’s like to be a “Mommy-preneur.” •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• How did you get started with Mommy Maid? I started off the business as a way to make a little extra money while continuing to be a stay at home mom. I was married with a toddler at the time. I had suffered the loss of my grandfather and needed a way to make a little extra income and get out of the house a bit. I did have a business partner at that time as well. I came up with the name, worked my magic on the home computer to build a flyer, stuffed some paper boxes and within 6 months Mommy Maid had 3 employees, almost 6 years later we have 7 and hope to continue to grow. How have you balanced your kids and work so well? It’s definitely not always easy! The largest reason I’ve been able to succeed is the “FAMILY” of girls I have working WITH me. They are not just employees; they are my friends and family. When one of my children are sick they all pitch in to help get MY job done the same way I pitch in when one of them is out! Not to mention the fact my kids have grown up around my business…Aggie could probably run things as well if not better than me sometimes…She’s even got her own desk in my office! What are the biggest challenges in being a single parent? Hmmm…there are so many…I never pictured being a single mom however, I strive everyday to do the best I possibly can. I do share joint custody with their father and he will always continue to be their dad and play a huge role in their 15

Shannon Warren is a
true “Mommy-preneur” lives. It’s definitely difficult on my days with them and work isn’t going so smoothly or I’m working really late as I tend to do during the holidays with that being our busy season. I don’t have a lot of family here so my friends and employees are my family when I need help. There’s lots of riding in the car or having to be quiet because mommy’s on the phone, however night time and weekends are our time, the cell phone stays charging in the bedroom and the laptop stays shut down. I have to draw the line somewhere between the Mommy and the Mommy Maid. Any challenges in being a female business owner? I would say the biggest challenge is in running a business that is ALL female…(LOL)…especially one where all of us are so close, when one is hurting the rest of us are concerned and we pull together to support them. There is a definite downside to that though, you get 7 women together and see just how catty it can get! We definitely have to have our heart to hearts from time to time but women are gonna be women, we do all love each other though and at the end of the day we can talk about one another or get upset with one another but outsiders beware…we are a package deal in life! The great and amazing thing though is no matter what personal tension may be going on behind our office doors when it’s time to work each and every one of us has our families to support and a love for OUR business…business is business and Mommy Maid would be no more without each of my girls! Do you ever get a chance to have any fun? Fun…what’s that? No I do actually get to have a lot of fun…first of all work to me is fun…there’s nothing better than loving what you do to make a living and I do love it! My customers new or old, complaining or complimenting are ALL amazing and truly so much fun. Its crazy how well you get to know someone when you clean for them, several of my customers are also my closest friends and had I never started Mommy Maid we probably never would have met! Any day that I have my children is fun whether it’s jumping on the trampoline, being chased with water guns, playing the Wii, or just cuddling on the couch watching TV, anytime I’m with them you’ll see a smile on my face…okay most of the time…they are my lil angels but they are far from perfect.
With my alone time you can usually find me laying on the couch with a romance novel or watching reality TV. I do like to venture out close to home sometimes…maybe head to Flip Flops for Karaoke Showcase on Tuesday night or Friends on a Saturday night to catch a local band…you can almost guarantee that if I’m headed out somewhere though I’m most likely with one of my girls from work. What advice would you give to any single moms looking to start a business? Plan, plan, plan…look ahead and do not underestimate your potential…never in a million years did I think with those first flyers that were handed out I would go from cleaning 3 houses a week myself to having 3 crews clean 5 or 6 houses a day! With hard work, dedication and great people supporting you ANYTHING is possible…Mommy Maid is proof of that! What’s the biggest thing about you that your friends would be surprised about? That I’m actually extremely shy…I have to push myself to talk to people I don’t know and to appear confident when I really just want to hide. Meeting new people is always exciting but very scary for me, my stomach is always doing somersaults when I do but I push through it and strive to improve that part of my personality every day. What’s the best thing about Gaston County to you? Hands down the best thing about Gaston County to me is that I can have the best of both worlds, I can work and play in the city but when it’s time to unwind at home I’m back to the good ole country! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Leaving our meeting, I can’t help but think how lucky Gaston County is to have a Shannon Warren living and working here. It’s the small, local business owners like Shannon that will bring us out of this awful recession. So, if you are looking for some help cleaning your house or office, give Shannon a call. She is definitely one of Gaston County’s “Good Things.” About Shannon: Gaston County Native Graduate of South Point High and UNC-Charlotte Two children: Abigail “Aggie” Marie 9 & Stryker Lee 3 Started Mommy Maid Cleaning Service in 2006 dec/jan 2011-2012 | good things in gaston county

{Cleaning} Holiday House
Tips from the Mommy of Mommy Maid Shannon Warren
8 19
Unfortunately the “true love” didn’t give the gift of a clean house in the traditional holiday song The 12 Days of Christmas! However with these quick and easy holiday cleaning tips you’ll feel as if they did! Precious Holiday Knick Knacks All of those precious holiday knick knacks that should look oh so gorgeous but are covered in dust and grime…no problem. Simply place your glass, china and glazed figurines inside the kitchen sink, spray with glass cleaner, then move them to a paper towel to air dry. Fireplace You love the ambiance and warmth a wood fireplace provides during those cold months but who loves cleaning that dusty, ashy mess? With these tips your fireplace will once again be the beautiful centerpiece of your home. To prevent ash dust from covering everything in its wake when you clean out your fireplace, first sprinkle ash with damp tea leaves. To make that slate hearth the glossy showpiece it should be, wash it every six weeks, let it air dry and then shine it up by wiping with lemon oil. If those beautiful brass fireplace tools are sticky and dingy, clean them with a cloth moistened with kerosene. Be careful to make sure the tools are completely dry prior to use!

Frost Free Windows You’ve worked so hard on your holiday decorations but the cold weather is fogging up your windows and obscuring the view. Here’s a quick and easy fix…wipe the interior of your windows with a solution of a 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol per 1 quart of water. The Final Touch You are ready for all of your guests to arrive…holiday decorations are in place, the house is sparkling from all of the scrubbing you’ve done, your favorite holiday music is softly playing in the background, the fire is crackling there’s only one thing left to put the final touch on everything…scenting your home. Don’t waste your money on expensive sprays! Simply saturate cotton balls with your favorite essential oil and place in the corners of a room, in cupboards or out-of-the-way places! I hope that these tips help to make your holiday season slightly less hectic and much more memorable! From all of us at Mommy Maid we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Be sure to look for more cleaning tips from the Mommy of Mommy Maid in upcoming Gaston Today Magazine issues!

Board Chairman Mark Upchurch pictured with Superintendent L. Reeves McGlohon and his family.
With more than 35 years of dedicated service to public schools, McGlohon is among the top education professionals in the state and was named one of the top superintendents in North Carolina this past year. “This is a highly coveted appointment, and we are extremely fortunate to have Superintendent McGlohon representing Gaston County and the surrounding area,” said Gaston County Board of Education Chairman Mark Upchurch.“The Governor selected Superintendent McGlohon based on his outstanding vision, leadership and commitment to public school education.” McGlohon is one of 26 members to oversee the use of “Race to the Top” funds to implement the Governor’s “Career and College – Ready, Set, Go” initiative, which aims to increase literacy and math skills by third grade, increase the number of students performing at or above grade level and increase the number of students taking college courses. The commission is also responsible for helping Governor Perdue to achieve an education goal for North Carolina – that every child will graduate from high school and have the skills necessary to succeed in college or the work force.

A Carolina Christmas
faith.hope.love by Darryl Warren
F
From the tall pines of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the soft breeze of the Atlantic seashore, the holiday season in Carolina offers an array of beauty and imagery that is like no other part of our wonderful country. For certain, the soul of any true Carolinian is equal parts mountain and sea. Memories of snow covered hills mix with the salty air of the sea to provide a collage of Christmas memories that are common to all native Carolinian sons and daughters. Those who spent their youth in Carolina, traveling to and from family gatherings, have special memories that are precious and burn brightly this time of year; they define us and provide a bond that time cannot break. Most are of children playing, Grand-parents smiling, as the smells and sounds of the holiday season fill the air. Together, we share these timeless memories that come alive during the season. They define us, and provide us a common thread from generation to generation. A Carolina Christmas is rich in tradition, shared in song and laughter in a spirit filled with what we hunger for most; FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE. But as public as our common fellowship, the most precious memories of Christmas in Carolina are our most private, shared only by a quiet, solitary smile as we drift off into the night’s embrace. These memories forever bond us to loved ones no longer with us, the gentle touch of our past reborn in our heart with the passion and love that time can never erase. There is comfort in knowing the Birth we celebrate at Christmas is our unbreakable link to loved one’s who are no longer here. But as sure as night follows day, they are still with us, seen in every twinkle of our Children’s eye, in every embrace of family and friends, and in the heart that still beats with the Promise born in a Manger long ago. As we share another Christmas in Carolina, as quiet solitude is interrupted by the season’s hustle and bustle, keep the most private memories of this precious time of year locked tightly in your heart, for they are the embers that will forever warm your soul.

“I would recommend Mommy Maid because I trust them, they are dependable and do a great job-even on the special tasks we ask for. We both work, we have a 2 year old and one on the way, plus we own our own business, so Mommy Maid is a life saver. Their prices are very reasonable based on other services we have tried.”
--- Chad Huggins, Gastonia, Customer since 2006
