“Mt Holly has been a fine community to live and work in. With recent and continuing down town improvements it will certainly be better for all that live here.” Herschel Ellis
Herschel Ellis and Vince Hill enjoy checkers at Time Flies.
So, “Is Mt. Holly’s growth a Good Thing?” “I’ve lived in Mt Holly since 1973. I’m more excited about the future than I’ve ever been. The community leaders all seem to be rowing the same way and I’m happy to see all these new businesses open up downtown. If there’s anything I can do to help Mt. Holly, I’m glad to do it.” Herschel Ellis “The inviting atmosphere and speculation on what is about to come to Mt Holly. The way they encourage and help new businesses. I’m very excited to be in Mt Holly.” Vince Hill, owner Caravan Coffee, when asked why he expanded into Mt. Holly. We can look to these two men, two long time Gaston County citizens, for two of the best answers to the question “Why should a business come to Mt. Holly?” GT MAG recently spoke with Mayor Bryan Hough about the future of Mt Holly. As you can see, there’s a lot of “Good Things” going on in Mt. Holly. Stop by, visit, and see for yourself. They’re OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Q. There’s been a lot of new businesses opening up in the downtown area. What has been the biggest reason for Mt Holly’s downtown growth? There are a number of reasons for Mt. Holly’s downtown growth. It cannot be attributed to just one big reason. Mount Holly began working for an improved and rejuvenated downtown 15 years ago. Through council leadership and citizen involvement, we have been able to put in place a vision Mayor of Mount Holly, and a plan for our revitalization Bryan Hough. efforts. Changes seen in our downtown and other areas of our city, take years to realize tangible results. We continue to seek ways to improve the business environment in our city to attract and retain business in Mount Holly. Q. What do you see happening in Mt Holly in the next few years? Mount Holly will continue to expand both its corporate and residential growth in the next few years. The city along with community leaders and organizations, have put into place a foundation for consistent and sustained growth for years to come. We are working to improve our many gateways into the city in order to attract more industrial and business investment in Mount Holly. It is vital we grow our corporate tax base to lessen the tax burden on our residents. Q. As mayor, what would you like to see Mt Holly become? We are striving for Mount Holly to become a place where people want to live, work and play. We want to help Mount Holly achieve its full potential in being the place people want to raise their families and live out their lives in a vibrant, active and connected community. Q. What would you say to a potential business looking to open up in downtown Mt Holly? Come and be a part of an up and coming, revitalize and energized city. We are fostering a business friendly environment to assist businesses in growing and prospering. Come now to get in on the ground floor of a tremendous opportunity!

Are You Stressing About Taxes? Then it’s time to hire a professional.
David, You’ve been in the tax business for 20 years. What’s the biggest mistake people make when filing their taxes?
quarterly basis, is STRONGLY recommended. There are HUNDREDS of tax law changes a year, any of which can make a big difference to a small business owner.
Poor record keeping! It is VITAL to keep good records. Having ALL W-2’s, 1099’s, receipts for all business purposes, charitable contributions, medical bills, taxes paid, vehicle expenses for business - all of this can mean thousands of dollars in lost refunds (or a greatly reduced bill). I prepared over 100 amended tax returns last year because people didn’t keep their records properly and the IRS caught them.
How can I be sure that my tax preparer knows what they’re doing?
With all the tax software programs out today, why should people use a tax preparation service like yours? NO software program can possibly know your tax situation. Each person’s tax return is different and, using a tax program is like buying clothes that says “one size fits all” (or worse, trying to be your own doctor!).To make matters worse, the more complicated your tax return is, the more likely your tax program won’t catch all the info you need to correctly prepare your tax return. I have seen more mistakes on “self prepared” returns than from all other tax preparers and accountants combined. Most of the amended tax returns I did last year were because someone tried to prepare their own return, forgot an important piece of information and the IRS caught it.
As a small business owner, how can I be sure that I’m keeping up to date on all the tax laws changes? Keeping in touch with your accountant, at least on a

Ask him/her about their experience and/or education. For example, I have been preparing taxes for 20 years now. Over those 20 years, I have prepared THOUSANDS of returns during that time. I have an IRS-registered PTIN (preparer tax ID number). I take at LEAST 15 hours A YEAR in continuing education and I get and review IRS updates constantly to stay on top of all the current tax law changes. Many people DREAD dealing with their taxes.A lot of people dont like the answers their accountant gives them. I have found that a lot of the problem stems from the lack of communication with their accountant (and vice versa). If you don’t like what your accountant says, GET A SECOND OPINION! While taxes are generally an unpleasant topic, I think it matters a lot if you have a good relationship with your accountant. If you don’t have a good relationship or aren’t satisfied with your accountant, find a new one!

Secret
Visit for lunch and you will be back for dinner!
of Health & Happiness By: Jonathan Logan
A
t the beginning of a new year, we often consider what we hope it will bring, and create resolutions to help us become better versions of ourselves. No matter how diverse our resolutions are, at their core resides a desire to seek and find happiness. Consider your resolutions – will reaching them lead to a happier you? Let’s focus on this: What is the secret to health and happiness? In my opinion, the secret to health and happiness doesn’t have to be an ever-elusive thing that happens when we eventually become one with our favorite yoga pose, nor is it found in the 20th mile of a marathon. But it can be. That’s the interesting and exciting thing about embarking on a journey to find what you seek. Once you actually decide that you want health and happiness, you start. That’s it. Start. Look at your resolutions – at their core, and begin. If you resolve to put better food into your body, to eat a more manageable amount of calories, to cut those carbs, start your new diet plan. If you want to

complete your first 5K, half marathon or marathon, or if you want to simply give your mind and body the gift of fresh air by taking a stroll around the neighborhood, take the first step. If you want to challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone, attend that yoga class you've been invited to.What I think you’ll find is the hidden secret to both health and happiness lies in the adventure of the journey itself. It is embedded in the pitfalls and in the wins – in the “almosts” and the “I’ve done its”. It is in the choice we make to try. Resolve to begin.

Coffee as a Health Drink? A “latte” evidence says it is
C
offee is not usually thought of as a “health drink,” but a number of studies suggest that it can be highly beneficial to your long term health. Researchers have found strong evidence that coffee reduces the risk of several serious ailments, including diabetes, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver. Coffee contains antioxidants that help control the cell damage that can contribute to the development of the disease. It is also a source of chlorogenic acid, which has been shown in animal experiments to reduce glucose concentrations. Caffeine, perhaps coffee’s most famous component, seems to have little to do with it; studies that looked at decaffeinated coffee alone found the same degree of risk reduction.
Larger quantities of coffee seem to be especially helpful in diabetes prevention. In a report that combined statistical data from many studies, researchers found that people who drank four to six cups of coffee a day had a 28 percent reduced risk compared with people who drank two or fewer. Those who drank more than six had a 35 percent risk reduction. Some studies show that cardiovascular risk also decreases with coffee consumption. Using data on more than 27,000 women ages 55 to 69 in the Iowa Women’s Health Study who were followed for 15 years, Norwegian researchers found that women who drank one to three cups a day reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by 24 percent compared with those drinking no coffee at all. So, enjoy that second cup of Joe!! It’s a “Good Thing.” Source: Journal of the American Medical Association.

he original member of Piedmont Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, Dr Ness began with a small Plastic Surgery practice in August, 1994. He initiated an expansion process that began in 2000, ultimately adding multiple physicians and opening offices encompassing a large segment of North Carolina. The result is one of the largest Plastic Surgery/Dermatology practices in the southeastern United States performing a comprehensive range of services. Dr Ness has two primary areas of clinical interest; aesthetic surgery and skin cancer reconstruction. He has performed over 2500 cosmetic breast procedures. He and his cosmetic surgery team are located in the Gastonia office, which features an AAAASF accredited operating facility. Patient safety is a particular priority, and Dr. Ness has served as an inspector of ambulatory surgical centers for AAAASF. He has served on an elite national breast implant advisory board and has also served as an international consultant for an implant company. He has also performed thousands of skin cancer reconstructions, with particular focus on nose and ear reconstruction. He works closely on a daily basis with the Gastonia Mohs provider, Dr William Fangman, to ensure optimal patient care and convenience, as well as superior outcomes. Dr. Ness is part of a talented team of physicians and staff, dedicated to providing superior service and support. He feels very fortunate to be part of an incredible team of physicians and employees.

dedicated and committed to the needs of patients. Often patients wish to meet with the patient care coordinator first in an effort to better understand their options prior to meeting with the doctor. Jacki will provide as much information as possible to patients and for many surgeries; such as facelifts, tummy tucks, eyelid surgery, liposuction and nose surgery. During the complimentary consultation with Dr. Ness (usually lasting 30-45 minutes) Jacki and the patient discuss all the issues related to the procedure the patient is interested in.That will include the risks and the benefits along with any other alternative treatments available. If there is a consultation that involves other disciplines such as skin care, introductions or appointments may be made with one of their talented dermatologists or esthetician. After all questions are answered the patient, is directed to our patient care coordinator for the surgical quote and to view photos of previous patients. They encourage patients to ask questions and to speak with other patients and are happy to provide references.”

What people are saying ... “Dr. Ness did my breast augmentation several years ago and I am truly satisfied. Before I had my procedure, I was unable to feel comfortable in tops, bathing suits, and dresses. And now, I am comfortable AND confident! It's given me a new attitude and has made such a difference. Dr. Ness was easy to talk to, very warm and caring, and thorough with the information that I needed. From start to finish, it was a great experience and I would do it again! Thank you all so much for giving me a “new attitude!” Sasha “I just wanted to take this opportunity to say Thank You for the wonderful experience I had with your facility. From my first consult to the subsequent follow-ups, I have been repeatedly impressed. I am so very happy with the results that I am encouraging everyone to go to your facility. In fact, I have been stopped by people who comment what a beautiful result Dr. Mantooth’s work creates. Everyone was so friendly, kind and gentle that there are no words to express my gratitude fully. My heart felt Thank You is all I may offer, but it is not enough!” Fondly, Tina

Beauty Brittany Farr, Aesthetician William Henry Salon and Spa
{tips Let’s enter 2012 looking and feeling better than ever! Below are a few health and beauty tips that have proven results. And will contribute to taking years off of the appearance of your face and body. Rejuvenate those puffy eyes Blood and lymphatic fluids decrease while we sleep, which leads to that unwanted puffiness in the morning. By doing facial massages in the morning, you can increase circulation and flush toxins from the skin. For example, press on the top of the eye socket located directly below your pupils and hold for a few seconds and remove. Move one fingertip-width to the right and repeat. Lastly, return to the center and move one fingertip-width to the right and hold for another few seconds and release. Repeat on your other eye. Consume a diet rich in antioxidants The best way to get a variety of antioxidants is to eat foods that represent all colors of the rainbow. The brighter and richer the color, the more antioxidant power that food will have. Antioxidants defend our bodies from free radical damage, which slows the aging process. Think about when you cut an apple - it turns brown after being exposed to oxygen, but if you dip it in orange or lemon juice it stays white and is preserved. The vitamin C in those juices protects the integrity of the flesh of the apple! Imagine what it can do for you!
Create the coveted “Dewy Look” So many people over use bronzer to create that youthful dewiness every woman wishes for. Bronzers are great for highlighting, contouring and creating a sun kissed look, but they are not ideal for the “dewy” appearance. Try using a primer, such as Bare Minerals Brightening Primer ($22). It has a pearly tint which will add a luminous, healthy glow.Additionally, it smoothes out skin complexion by combating patchy dryness, fine lines, and minimizes the appearance of larger pores. Follow with a tinted moisturizer or a mineral foundation and a sheer, peachy lip gloss. Exfoliate your body at least once a week You don’t have to go buy fancy expensive body scrubs from the mall to achieve smooth, supple skin. Head to your pantry and pull out the sugar or brown sugar and olive oil! Mix one cup of sugar with one-half a cup of oil until it is blended thoroughly. (it shouldn’t look like a slushy) When you get in the shower, allow your skin to soak in the warm water, not hot. Hot water strips our skin of its naturals oils which increases dryness) to soften dead skin cells. Shut the water off and rub sugar scrub all over your body in circular motions. Don’t scrub to

hard, you can cause microscopic tears in the skin. Turn the shower back on and rinse. When you finish, pat dry instead of rubbing dry. The olive oil will leave a thin film on your skin which will serve as a moisturizer. Massage the leftover oil into your skin instead of a lotion. Get SERIOUS about an anti-aging regimen Yes, it’s a good idea to start early. A good moisturizer is most important. Read the label to ensure it contains antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, anti inflammatory agents such as aloe and green tea, hyaluronic acid and ceramides to boost and maintain skin hydration, and glycolic acid to trigger productions of collagen to plump skin cells and reduce wrinkles on the skin’s surface. Serums are even more beneficial due to their smaller molecular structure, therefore they penetrate deeper and have a higher concentration of active ingredients. Creams and serums containing retinoid are the workhorse for anti-aging. They also increase collagen production, reduce wrinkles, shrink pores, treat acne and lighten brown spots.

Reduce Stress Make sure you are getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Going to bed the same time each night and waking up the same time each morning keeps our body clock on track. Try practicing yoga or meditation to calm down. Exercise is proven to reduce the amount of the stress causing hormone cortisol. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. It is also a good idea to see your massage therapist monthly to let her help you relieve tension. Ditch sipping from straws Drinking straws, over time, can cause lines and wrinkles around the mouth just as easily as smoking does. Maintain your home skin care regimen with a facial Just as you would maintain a fabulous haircut by getting trims every 4-6 weeks, it is equally important to maintain the integrity of your skin by getting a professional facial every 4-6 weeks as well. An aesthetician will be able to deep cleanse your skin more efficiently than you can at home. If 4-6 weeks is not feasible, seasonal facials can be beneficial as well. I have a feeling 2012 is going to be a beautiful year!

Race Day Mud Run Tips: • Arrive early. There are several waves and you want to make sure your have your gear ready. Take time to stretch and find your friends and/or your team. • Leave your costume at home. There are always a few crazy folks wearing 3-piece suits and wedding dressings. Less is better: swim wear, tights, spandex is the way to go. Pulling extra weight is not the objective. • Paparazzi. If at all possible, bring a spectator/camera person. You do not want to bring a camera with you into the mud, because once it’s muddy, the photos will be not be Facebook worthy. • Old shoes. If you have shoes that you’re ready to toss anyway, wear them and bring an extra pair of shoes/flip flops with you for the post party. Tie your shoes tight enough that you can’t slip them off, but not so tight that they end up hurting. • Bring a full change of clothes. If you do a mud run right, everything will be wet, along with dirty. You’ll be more comfortable and the person who drove you there will appreciate it. • Bring a large towel or sheet. Preferably an old crappy one you can wipe the mud off. While you’re at it, bring a trash bag. It’s probably the easiest way to clean up.
Gaston Today Magazine’s very own Kerrie and Jason Boys along with several of their friends will be competing in the team division in the upcoming Carolinas Sprint. Both Kerrie and Jason have competed in numerous running and triathlon events. Look for photos in the next issue of Gaston Today.

Spotlight | Fitness
vs Anaerobic vs. Aerobic By April Hartman-Arney, Owner Ultimate Fitness Gym
Anaerobic exercise: Strength training used to develop endurance and increase size of skeletal muscles. Aerobic exercise: Any exercise that raises your heart rate.
or running to get the heart rate up) is sufficient for a heart healthy, weight loss program. Any time you can cardio longer, with resistance or inclined, you are burning that much more!
Aerobic’s edge is calorie for calorie, cardio has a slight advantage. You should be able to burn 10-12 calories a minute running or cycling.
10-15 minutes using weights (whether it be body muscle machines or free weights) 10-12 reps, going up slightly in weight increments by 5 to 10 lbs should efficiently challenge the muscle enough for you to burn the extra calories for weight training! (Not to mention that your muscles will begin to tone and harden…and that gives all muscle groups a different look!)
Anaerobic’s edge (weight training) gives you a metabolic spike for over an hour after a workout due to the recovery time of the muscles. For every 3 pounds of muscle you build, you’ll burn an extra 120 calories a day---just resting! Maintaining the muscle takes more of your energy to sustain. The winner between the two would have to be strength training for more calories burned in a short amount of time.
Arms look better in tanks, those legs look so much more tone in those bathing suits and that back looks awesome in those sundresses and t-shirts and that core will become smaller and more defined!
So… if you can combine both together at least 3 times a week you are basically burning calories all the time!
You can do this, I know YOU can! The Plan: Get healthy...Stay healthy!

A Wonderland of
Books Given to Gaston’s ReStore Co-Written by Vince Delap and Delta P. Sanders
Challenged to fund and build three homes before the end of June of this year, Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County (Habitat-Gaston) is making the most of a bountiful book donation. Vince Delap, manager of Habitat-Gaston ReStore’s extensive “Book, Music and More” area, is making preparation for a book and collectible sale to support the Habitat-Gaston building program. Vince facilitated a recent donation of 40,000 books, the largest single donation of product Habitat-Gaston has ever received. The donors, Dr. and Mrs. Fred Gachet (Shirley) owned Wonderland Books near Granite Falls, North Carolina. For years, it was a fixture for travelers on their way to and from Boone, as well as local book readers and collectors. In late 2010, the recession and declining health prompted the Gachet’s decision to close Wonderland Books. “It was really too much for us to handle (to maintain the store), but books have always been very important to us” said Shirley. The sale continued into mid-2011, when Vince inquired with the Gachets about making a gift of books. They asked how many he’d like. Vince said,“I was taken aback by the openness and kindness of the offer. I said “A few hundred?” and Shirley countered “You can have more if you like.” That day in August of 2011, he and workers from Habitat-Gaston brought 2,200 books back. “I was like a kid in a candy store”, recalled Vince, who worked for many years with Borders Books. “The chance to bring these titles into our store was really amazing.” The Gachets were equally generous to other organizations. Vince kept in touch with the Gachets as the closing sale persisted. Upon hearing the concern over Fred’s health in Shirley’s voice, he decided to be bold. One day,Vince said, “Shirley, you said you wish someone would make you an offer for the whole business. I want you to feel comfortable saying ‘No’, but… would you consider giving us (Habitat-Gaston) your entire inventory?” Shirley laughed, but in a kindly way. “Well Vince, let Fred and I talk about it.” Not an hour had passed when Shirley called back. “For you and Habitat, we’ll do it.” Just months earlier, prior to relocation, Habitat-Gaston would not have been able to make the request or accommodate the 25

“I would recommend Mommy Maid because I trust them, they are dependable and do a great job-even on the special tasks we ask for. We both work, we have a 2 year old and one on the way, plus we own our own business, so Mommy Maid is a life saver. Their prices are very reasonable based on other services we have tried.”
