istribution is entering a new era of change as 2019 kicks into action, triggered by the acceleration of marketplaces, the decline of resell and the rise of aggregators. And perhaps the writing was on the wall some eight months ago, as Ingram Micro — the world’s largest distributor of technology — self-identified as a “solution aggregator”. For the 800-pound gorilla dominating the market to change direction — in the pursuit of new partners, vendors and customers — should act as validation that the channel is changing at pace. Central to such change will be marketplaces, the one-stop channel shop. “The partner of the future will likely not be a transacting one,” observed Jay McBain, principal analyst of channel partnerships and alliances at Forrester. “It doesn’t make sense to the new generation of tech buyers who make two-thirds of all new tech decisions today.” According to McBain, 73 per cent of business buyers find the web more convenient to make purchases, forecasting that 17 per cent of all B2B transactions will happen through e-commerce by 2023. “The era of ‘single throat to choke’ and a ‘trusted advisor’ anchored by a single bill will be a thing of the past,” McBain added. “With the decline of account ownership by partners, the new tech services gig economy will pair the right partners with the right skills at the right time. “For example, a CMO may have five different companies installing, implementing, integrating, securing, ensuring compliance and providing
business continuity in a single solution.” As explained by McBain, this could include a software-as-a-service (SaaS) partner, a digital agency, a system integrator, multiple independent software vendors (ISVs), a start-up, a born-in-thecloud provider and a solution provider. “For every dollar they spend with a SaaS platform, they will spend four times that amount with these third parties to make the project a success,” McBain added. In this special edition Distributor Directory, we speak with Wendy O’Keeffe, country general manager of Australia and New Zealand at Tech Data, following the roll out of a new B2B e-commerce site for Australian partners. Under the banner of Shop, the platform is designed to deliver an easy-to-use, onestop shopping experience for the channel. Through independent IDG research, we also highlight the technology bets made by IT executives during the next 12 months, while assessing the subsequent ripple effect through the channel. TECH DATA HAS ROLLED OUT A B2B E-COMMERCE SITE FOR AUSTRALIAN PARTNERS, DESIGNED TO DELIVER AN EASYTO-USE, ONE-STOP SHOPPING EXPERIENCE FOR THE CHANNEL — JAMES HENDERSON REPORTS.
Tech Data recently announced the launch of a new offering in the Australian channel, in the form of a B2B e-commerce site — labelled shop-au.techdata.com (Shop) — specifically designed for partners. The roll-out echoes a similar unveiling in 2014 across North America, with the distributor’s cloud-based platform deployed in numerous countries across the world, undergoing regular enhancements to align with evolving partner and vendor solution needs. “Digital transformation is part of our core strategy at Tech Data,” said Wendy O’Keeffe, country general manager of Australia and New Zealand at Tech Data. “Innovative platforms like Shop enable us to connect with and support our channel partners in new ways to further help them unlock high-growth opportunities.” The Australian site leverages the features and functionality that earned Tech Data two Internet Retailer Excellence Awards in 2017, in the form of B2B E-Commerce Website Design of the Year and B2B e-Commerce Player of the Year. According to O’Keeffe, Shop will “supercharge” the distributor’s eBusiness capabilities in Australia. “It also complements Tech Data’s

Following a trial phase locally, the platform is now open to partners. “Launching our new web property in Australia is one of many investments we are making to embrace this high-potential market,” said David Spindler, global vice president of eBusiness at Tech Data. “It’s not only a way for our partners to procure the products we represent, but it also showcases our vendor partners and acts as an extension of our excellent sales team.” Designed with a focus on ease of use, Spindler said Shop includes a customisable dashboard design that brings key technologies and offers to the forefront, providing a “best-inclass” user experience in the process. “Shop was built based on customer feedback,” Spindler explained. “We’re an agile shop and this requires focus on the user being in the centre of the equation, and making things simple for our customers. “All of our customers are consumers and business owners, so from the consumer side

We examined the platforms used to buy clothing and groceries for example, which allowed us to understand what the consumer expected in terms of experience — we had to match this expectation. “We started with customer engagement, understanding user requirements and making enhancements accordingly, which we believe will benefit our reseller ecosystem.” Housing a continually expanding range of features, Spindler said key benefits include a “comprehensive” online product catalogue; account and credit status information and visibility into online orders and quotes. Furthermore, featured promotions are also available, alongside 24/7 accessibility and warranty add-ons to recommend support and warranty uplifts on hardware and software, in addition to any device ease of access. “Tech Data is known for being a multi-faceted distributor,” Spindler said. “We carry everything from the living room to the data centre, and all the pieces in the middle. “Therefore, we realised an opportunity around displaying our offerings and promoting our vendors

to help our current base of resellers, but to also attract new resellers to the platform. “We believe this to be a big step in that direction because if you’re not in e-commerce today in some shape or form, you’re a very specialised player. We have a strong value-added arm and this will not hurt our specialised business, rather it allows us to enhance our offerings by allowing resellers to conduct business through our systems.” In looking ahead, Spindler said expanded functionality is due mid2019 and will include renewal portal providing access to opportunities, quotes and orders, alongside pricing and inventory APIs to enable partners to interact with their own third-party systems. “An e-commerce site isn’t just a platform to place an order, if that was the objective then we would fail,” Spindler clarified. “Most of our customers today are well-informed and do their homework and research electronically. “Our customers research on our website and in some ways, our website actually acts as a sales person who represents our company through highlighting the vendors that we carry and outlining benefits to the resellers that buy those offerings. “We absolutely expect to attract new partners and expect to attract new vendors. We’re investing a lot of money in this market to make us a leading player in the channel.” In short, Spindler said Shop is built on three core drivers; digitisation, local expertise and code. “We’re ready to go now,” added Pia Broadley, director of sales and operations at Tech Data. “It’s important for partners to have multiple options in how they do business and this is another opportunity for us to service the channel. We will continue to build and invest in our systems and people locally.”

Organisations are in the mood to double down on technology investments, with spending expected to increase at more than half of businesses worldwide in the next 12 months. What will they be spending those investment dollars on? IDG surveyed 240 heads of IT organisations worldwide in the CIO Tech Poll: Economic Outlook 2018 study to learn their budget plans, and another 200 IT leaders in the CIO Tech Poll: Tech Priorities 2019 study to find out in what areas of technology they will be spending those dollars. Not surprisingly, cyber security and cloud computing strategies are expected to see the largest increase in spending throughout the next year. Only 15 per cent of tech budgets will be spent with new technology vendors, similar to last year. However, emerging technologies are on their radar, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and blockchain, which a majority of IT leaders plan to adopt in the next three to five years.

IT executives realise that if they want to continue to grow their business digitally, their IT budgets will have to increase, which is what is taking place. This year, more than half (57 per cent) of IT executives expect their budgets to increase and 30 per cent expect their budgets to remain the same. Just nine per cent expect their IT budgets to decrease. IT leaders were asked that same question in our 2018 survey, and more CIOs predicted their budgets would remain the same for that (38 per cent). IT leaders say their budgets are shifting during the last budget cycle due to several factors, including IT initiatives that have started or stopped, system upgrades or

maintenance, changes in the number of IT initiatives starting in a year and new mandates from executives or the board of directors. Last year, new IT initiatives took the top spot (46 per cent) and mandates from executives tied for a close second with system upgrades among the top driving factors for reallocating IT dollars (45 per cent each). Over the next 12 months, IT leaders point to another factor that may cause budgets to shift — pressure from lines of business to make changes to IT operations or strategy — which was identified by 43 per cent of respondents as having a potential impact on future budgets, up from 37 per cent last year.
Tech priorities
How do these factors translate into budget allocation and tech priorities in 2019? On average, 66 per cent of IT budgets are allocated to solutions that maintain the business or status quo. These include tools that keep the lights on and perform business tasks, such as administration, operations activities and inventory replacement. IT leaders say that 15 per cent of tech spending with go toward new technologies in 2019, which is the same amount as 2018. Looking at how IT leaders expect their spending on newer technology to change during the next year, enterprises are likely to spend more on newer technologies compared to SMBs at 51 per cent vs. 33 per cent. Overall, the amount of organisations that expect an increase in spending on new technologies has increased from 2018 — 41 per cent this year compared to 33 per cent. CIO’s Tech Priorities Report shows spending increased on both operational and innovation spending. Almost three quarters of respondents (72 per cent) say budgets will increase for cyber security, followed by cloud computing (67 per cent).

Spending on business process management/workflow automation is seeing a big jump in budget priority with 63 per cent of respondents saying they will increase budgets in this area. In last year’s results, only 35 per cent of organisations expected their spending on this platform to increase. In fact, the single most important project that 31 per cent of respondents are working on involves business process management / workflow automation. This is especially true for smaller businesses. Some 37 per cent of SMBs say this is their most important tech project, whereas only 23 per cent of enterprises see it as their top priority. When technologies have been established in an organisation for a while, there’s a greater chance that the budget will remain the same rather than increasing. That is likely why 57 per cent of respondents will spent the same amount on Windows 10, and 50 per cent will spend the same amount on social / collaboration tools as they did last year. However, spending in 2019 on technologies like DevOps and enterprise mobility management will also remain the same, according to almost half of respondents (46 per cent).
