hen assessing the state of the Australian channel, the words of Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr — a 19th century French critic, journalist and novelist — come to mind. The observation that “the more things change, the more they stay the same” mirrors the current market dynamics of the ecosystem, an ecosystem seemingly turned upside down by new technologies and buyers, yet aligned to the same core principles of business. Yes, line of business is consuming solutions and offerings in different ways; yes, a new breed of partner has emerged to challenge the market and yes, the traditional supply chain is being questioned on a daily basis. But under the surface, the same rules apply. For distribution, that centres around channel enablement, growth and profitability. In this issue, we look back on 40 years of Ingram Micro. Following four decades of business, Felix Wong — senior vice president and country chief executive of Australia and New Zealand at Ingram Micro — explains how the distribution giant has remained relevant in the channel. “I still think the core fundamentals of breaking down boxes and providing just-in-time availability is critical because people want things now,” said Wong, who also acknowledged the evolving role of a distributor. Today, Ingram Micro has expanded to recruit a new breed of partner, evident through the launch of Cloud Marketplace and a tailored strategy around independent

software vendor enablement. “We’re moving further down the road of being a solutions distributor as opposed to moving boxes,” Wong added. With 2020 fast approaching, a host of distributors — whether hardware, software or specialist focused — are building out new strategies for the 12 months ahead. We speak with leaders of Arrow ECS ANZ; Bluechip Infotech; Dicker Data; Exclusive Networks; Nextgen and WestconComstor to document key priorities, spanning business, technology and channel. Once again, distribution is showing its strength, as a force to be listened to, rather than questioned. Because despite new technologies and business approaches shaking the channel to its very core, distributors remain tied to the epicentre — providing the voice of reason amidst a seismic industry shift. In looking across both sides of the vendor and partner fences, the middle concept of the three-tier chain remains centrally placed to understand the metrics of two differing worlds, as the continual pulse checkers of the local channel.

YEARS OF

INGRAM MICRO FOLLOWING FOUR DECADES OF BUSINESS, FELIX WONG — SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND COUNTRY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND AT INGRAM MICRO — EXPLAINS TO JULIA TALEVSKI HOW THE DISTRIBUTION GIANT HAS REMAINED RELEVANT IN THE CHANNEL.

In 1979, the aim of the distribution network was pretty straightforward: breaking down a manufacturer’s pallets of hundreds of products, down into bulk or singular units for mass consumption, along with all the elements that went into driving that capability to get the product to its destination. Forty years on, that element still maintains its relevance, but has progressed beyond pushing boxes out of the warehouse to the customer front door, to providing a whole raft of services including financing and credit, professional services, training and support, lifecycle services and freight and logistics. “I still think the core fundamentals of breaking down boxes and providing just-intime availability is critical because people want things now, but it has evolved into providing services like finance and lines of credit; basic systems to make the supply chain more efficient; freight solutions to

get things at a certain service level matched with a certain cost,” said Felix Wong, senior vice president and country chief executive of Australia and New Zealand at Ingram Micro. Since inception and through a myriad of acquisitions over the years, Ingram Micro has catapulted into a distribution juggernaut with operations in 52 countries, 125 logistic centres, turning US$50 billion in revenue during the 2018 calendar year. In Australia, the distributor houses around 580 staff with just under 200 in the supply chain facility, with the balance focused on go-to-market. Wong cited the company’s “strong culture and talent pool” across the business as critical to its market success. “If you have great people that all think and do things differently with a different set of values and so on, you’re just going to have chaos,” he added. “If you have everyone towing the same line and direction, not necessarily agreeing with each other all

the time, but the same value and culture in terms of how they go about doing business and achieving success — that is the key to being successful and that’s what I drive here. We pride ourselves in our ethics and how we do business.”

Up-skilling

As technology keeps evolving at a more rapid pace into new areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, cyber security and the Internet of Things, this gives way to new business models and areas of specialisation whereby a distributor such as Ingram Micro, finds itself right in the middle once more. With a view to help its network of partners take new technologies to market, the business offers financing, training and guidance throughout the entire sales and support process. “How do I help my customers to leverage this technology and make some money on

the way through? asked Wong. “How do I upskill myself and scale up quickly enough to get this avalanche of new technology coming to my reseller? It’s hard. ”Who’s got the money to invest in technical skills or education? That’s really what Ingram Micro is bringing to the table as the next step. We’re investing globally in technologies such as IoT and we’re building cyber security practices around the world. “We’re buying cyber security consulting firms, taking that IP and using it to drive education in the channel and helping our resellers to up-skill to sell those solutions to their customers.”

The marketplace acts an ‘app store’ for resellers to purchase solutions as-aservice, in addition to automating billing and management processes. “We’re becoming inextricably linked to our partners,” Wong added. “It’s a journey that we’re taking by building all these things, and once they start using our financial services or cloud platform, we are much more closely linked to their business — and it becomes more of a partnership.” Looking forward, most of Ingram Micro’s investment and focus will remain tightly on selling solutions, particularly in complex areas such as cyber security, networking and data centres. “We’re moving further down the road of being a solutions distributor as opposed to moving boxes,” he said. “With the leadership team that we have and the people we’ve hired, we’ve got some great people that have fantastic experience and that’s what is driving success in th business.”

Key milestone of Ingram Micro • In 1979 husband and wife, Geza Czige and Lorraine Mecca, created a distribution company named Micro D based in Southern California. The company achieved US$3.5 million in sales during its first year in business • Micro D made its public debut in 1983, with Ingram Industries becoming a majority shareholder in 1986. The company then merged with Ingram Computer, went private and was renamed as Ingram Micro D creating a billiondollar computer products wholesale distributor • The first step in global expansion was into the European market through the acquisition of Belgium-based SoftEurop in 1989 • In 1992, the distributor launched its operations in Malaysia and Singapore • In 1996, the business split from the privately held Ingram Industries, and went public once again on the New York Stock Exchange, with revenues soaring to more than US$12 billion • In 2004, through the acquisition of Tech Pacific, Ingram Micro touched down on Australian shores • In 2009 the distributor focused on expanding specialist lines of business, buying New Zealand-based provider, Vantex Technology • In 2012, Ingram Micro embarked on its largest acquisition to date through the purchase of mobile device lifecycle services and distributor, BrightPoint • 2015 saw the distributor further anchor its Asia Pacific reach with its new Cloud Marketplace expanding into Singapore, New Zealand and Australia • In 2016, Ingram Micro was the subject of an acquisition itself, when China-based, Tianjin Tianhai Investment Company, a subsidiary of HNA Group, purchased the distributor US$38.90 per share, placing a US$6 billion equity value on the entire business. This was not long after Ingram bought another distributor in New Zealand, Connector Systems, further building upon its ‘value’ in the market • At the turn of 2019, HNA Group has aired its intentions to sell Ingram Micro, after seeking interest from private equity firm Apollo Global, but nothing further has taken place as yet

The distributor will also launch a new professional services offering — under the banner of Velocity — designed to help partners deliver high-grade solutions within a short timeframe. “Technology that enables transformation to drive outcomes will underpin future tech trends and that includes artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and big data,” said Andrew Assad, general manager of Arrow ECS A/ NZ. “All of these need technology solutions that address security, compliance and data management, and enable businesses to evolve and innovate.

Cyber security represents a key focus area for Bluechip Infotech amid plans to introduce new solutions for partners through varied as-aservice offerings. Likewise, unified communications and collaboration represent market priorities for the distributor, through the provision of integrated solutions via the channel in Australia. “From on-premise to cloud, boxmoving to annuity and subscription services, these are changing the IT distribution landscape without a doubt,” said Johnson Hsiung, managing director of Bluechip. “There are still quite a lot of boxes moving around, but distributors have to provide more than logistic services to survive in this everchanging market.” During the past 12 months, Bluechip has been taking aim at

Since taking the helm of WestconComstor Australia in March 2018, Phil Cameron has increased revenues to more than $400 million, growing 16 per cent year-on-year in the process. Such growth has come from the distributor’s core vendor portfolio, housing Cisco, Juniper Networks, NetApp, F5 Networks, Palo Alto Networks and Check Point Software Technologies. “We’re going to continue our vendor specialisation, investment in our digital distribution platform and

rolling out our services offerings,” said Cameron, speaking as managing director. “We’re doing a lot of work around complementary vendors as well. “We’ll continue with the strong leadership that I’ve brought into the team in the last 12 months, and we’ve been focusing on being a real specialist distributor, driving deep skills through our core vendors.” Another priority area in the 12 months ahead is enhancing services offerings, in response to increased channel demand. “We’re getting more partners coming to us wanting help with supply chain services,” Cameron added. “It could be 3PL services for the vendor or partner as well as professional services because we’ve got the deeper skills, we’re able to help partners consult to their customers on solutions, representing and working with the partner community.”

DICKER DATA Dicker Data is lining up growth across a range of emerging technologies, spanning Internet of Things, edge computing, security, storage, artificial intelligence and machine learning, backed up by internal and channel changes. “We’re going to be launching some new initiatives that will provide a new level of support to our staff,” said Vlad Mitnovetski, COO of Dicker Data. “Secondly, we’re focused on delivering the best platforms, services and support to our reseller partners to enable them to reach their full potential. “We have our new transactional website coming very soon and we’re constantly looking for other ways in which we can support our partners and vendors to be more successful.” Dicker Data expects to see further growth in device and PC sales during the next 12 months with Microsoft Windows 7 support ending in January 2020, driving transition to Windows 10. “The shift to subscription and annuitybased revenue is definitely happening and I’m pleased to say that we’ve seen thousands of partners already go on that journey with us,” Mitnovetski added. “There’ll always be a place in the market for traditional IT procurement and we are absolutely committed to supporting our partners in those spaces, but as the new recurring revenue models continue to gain momentum and the average sale price lowers, only the true value-added distributors, like Dicker Data, will remain profitable and survive into the future.”
