PORTIA FEARIS GRAHAM YERXA [27 NOVEMBER 1884 - 1 APRIL 1969] came to Desert Hot Springs in the 1940s as the wife of settler Cabot Yerxa. In an era when women were not commonly educated, she studied religions extensively. She was a metaphysical lecturer of some renown and helped to establish a Theosophical retreat in Morongo Valley. Her contributions to Desert Hot Springs extended far beyond entertaining guests at the pueblo; she brought philosophical discourse to the community and an appreciation for diverse religious beliefs.
