BRIDAL STYLE

trend

We all knew the Royal Wedding of Harry and Meghan was going to have some effect on what’s trending in Bridal. So let’s see the styles to beat this wedding season!

Capes

A new addition to the wedding wardrobe, capes are blowing up on the wedding circuit, to add a more sophisticated bridal look. Brides are going for a softer touch with a floral or feathered cape as an alternative to wearing a veil. These can then be taken off for the evening’s entertainment, for a more informal look to dance the night away.

Simple but stunning

Ronald Joyce

Taking a leaf out of Meghan Markle’s book, we’re seeing simple gowns winning at this year’s bridal fashion week, with clean lines and understated gowns. Don’t underestimate these though, simplicity leaves room to maximise your accessories to create a look that takes the groom’s breath away.

3D floral

This is tipped to be a big hit at 2019 weddings. Wedding gowns are being transformed with the addition of 3d flowers to create a more textured, stand out look.

Large bows

Bows are seemingly everywhere this wedding season, and bridalwear is exploring this trend with oversized statement bows for a fresh look to a classic wedding gown.

Return of ruffles Ronald Joyce Sincerity

Ruffles are back with a vengeance this season, and are appearing in every way possible when it comes to the bridal look. From a mermaid ruffle along the bottom, to tiered ruffles down one side, elongating the bride, ruffles manage to create a fun, yet regal look. Summer brides can even opt for a dress cut at the knee for a ballerina ruffle effect that’s fun and informal.

{ PLANNING }

starting out

You’ve just got engaged and have the parents’ seal of approval, now it’s time to start planning, but where do you start?? Here’s a few tips to kick start your wedding planning with a bang! SET YOUR BUDGET - BE REALISTIC

CHOOSING THE BRIDAL PART Y This can be a minefield as the bridal party is going to be involved with all the in depth parts of planning your wedding. So it makes sense to choose people who you get along with, where possible. It’s common to have all siblings as either groomsmen or bridesmaids and a close friend as the best man and maid of honour. But don’t be afraid to change things up, especially if you don’t have a typical family set up. Add in an important family member or a close family friend who’s been there a lot when you were growing up. There’s no set rules as to who you can have; it’s your special day, so have those who you feel closest to.

Your budget comes down to how much you can afford. You should both discuss this and if parents/grand-parents are chipping in, talk to them too. This way you’ll have an idea of how much you can spend and how much you need to save. Many couples choose to save for a few years to have the day they have always dreamed of.

SECURE YOUR VENUE AND DATE Everything will revolve around your venue, including the date, location and size of your wedding, so this is one of the first things you should book. Then as soon as you’ve done this, start searching for a photographer as they can book up over 2 years in advance. Use the I Do Wedding Directory for inspiration.

RESEARCH WEDDING ST YLES It makes life easier if you have a general idea of how you’d like your wedding day to look. If you don’t have a clue, look through magazines, on Pinterest and Instagram and start collecting ideas. Attending wedding fayres is another great idea, whether you’re just shopping for inspiration, or if you’ve gone out with a plan of the items you’re going to book in that day. The I Do Wedding Exhibitions are a great place to start.

10 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

WHO’S ON THE GUEST LIST From distant uncles to that friend you grew up with but haven’t spoken to in a while, the guest list can be difficult. Your budget, wedding style and venue capacity will have an influence over the amount of guests you invite. First, write a list of everyone you can think of who you’d both like at your wedding, then show this to your parents, they may want to add certain people to it who you might not know so well or have forgotten. You can then work back from there splitting into daytime and evening guests if you’re not going for a straight through wedding.

{ BRIDESMAIDS }

thegirls here come

Choosing who to have as a bridesmaid can be one of two things: straight forward or tricky depending on family dynamics and friendships. The last thing any bride wants to do is rock the boat or cause offence by appointing some bridesmaids and leaving others out. It’s a tricky situation so tread very carefully. The most important thing is to choose girls you feel closest to. If you have life long friends, then these are obvious candidates but equally if you or the groom have a younger sister or a niece or close cousin, these too are strong possibilities. Choosing a bridesmaid can be like walking through a minefield but don’t be tempted to appoint too many attendants just for the sake of pleasing everyone. There’s no real limit on the number of bridesmaids a bride can have - but you need to be sensible from a cost and taste perspective. After all it is your big day and you don’t want to be overshadowed by a bevy of bridesmaids. Another factor to decide is whether you want older bridesmaids or younger ones. Remember if you have very young bridesmaids or flower girls, you will need someone older to keep an eye on them as they carry out their duties. Most brides choose a maid-of-honour which is usually someone they have known for a very long time. She will be your right hand woman and help organise all aspects of the wedding along the planning route. Older bridesmaids form the bride’s support network and should be on hand to help with any wedding planning issues as they arise. On the day itself, bridesmaids are still there to assist the bride and, as members of the bridal party, should be on hand to welcome and host guests.

Once your attendants are chosen, let the shopping begin; here’s our round up of what’s on trend for the coming season...

Natural & neutral

Neutrals are a popular colour choice all year round, from off-whites and greys to subtle sages and silvers. Keeping on the metallic theme, sequins and sparkle are up there too, whether you’re looking for winter glam or summer shimmer.

Perfectly pastel

True Bridesmaids

Blush, pinks and peaches are still high on the trending list along with pastels. Popular pale hues include lilacs, aquas, lemons, and blues. Pale powder blue is a big hitter for this year and suits most skin tones and age ranges. We’re also expecting to see a surge of purples again, but forget Cadbury, 2019 is going to be all about Ultra Violet.

Deep and rich

Deep colours are big news, especially when we enter the later months, look out for blacks, burgundies and navy blues, with velvet making a huge comeback for the cooler months.

{ BRIDESMAIDS } True Bridesmaids

Bejewelled

True Bridesmaids

We’re also seeing lots of Jewel tones in the new season’s bridesmaid dresses. So, lots of ruby reds, emerald greens and topaz yellows are expected at many weddings this year, with focus more on block colour, rather than florals or patterned dresses.

Shoulders on show

When it comes to style, it’s all about having your shoulders on display. Opt for a Bardot cut, off shoulder cap sleeve or halter neck, and be sure to watch out for bridesmaid jumpsuits in off the shoulder styles too. Kelsey Rose

Continuing on from last year’s surge in greenery weddings, botanicals are still as popular and it’s easy to see why. Swapping flowers for foliage is still the top choice for many couples to create a lush natural and lavish feel to their wedding day. The botanical theme really brings the outdoors in, with leafly plants aplenty draped on everything from the seating plan to the table centres. Plam leaves are set to be big this season, along with herbs, Fern and Ivy also emerging as popular greenery choices’.

{ HAIR }

a change IN THE

hair

When it comes to your wedding hair, it’s easy to want to try something new and completely change up your style.

TWISTED But remember, you still want to look like you on your wedding day, so it’s important to do what works for you and your hair. All hairstyles were not created equal! So let’s take a look at what’s trending in wedding hair!

Statement Bows

Remember wearing a bow in your hair as a child? Well bows are back for 2018/19 and they are in! Brave brides are opting for large statement bows to replace a veil; these work particularly well with high buns as a feature piece. If you don’t want a chunky bow, opt for a thin ribbon for a daintier feel.

Boho

BRAIDED

Still as popular as ever, Boho is leading the way for brides who want an effortless look for their wedding day. We’re seeing the just-rolled-outof-bed look to be on point for the new wedding season.

Braids

Fresh Flowers

Fresh Flowers are still popular this season; dainty daisies affixed into hair or tropical florals woven into plaits are two styles we’re seeing a lot of.

Messy Updo

As we’re moving away from the sleek look; the updo in its many forms has been brought right up to date with texture being added to the hair and strands of hair pulled out and left to hang around the face. Imagine soft chignons with loose hair strands either side to frame your face (a-la-Meghan Markle’s wedding hair) or a high textured bun for your bridal hair.

Half up Half Down

Popular for those brides who have longer wavy hair, the half up do incorporates plaits to pull the hair back off the face and create a loose yet controlled look.

Braids have been changed up for this year by being incorporated into messy buns, and side braids creating a feature piece for braided bridal hair.

Low Ponytail MESSED UP

Always in fashion, a low pony is a great yet simple choice for the bride wanting to go elegant with her bridal hair. Teamed up with a ribbon, this might be the runaway trend for this year.

Twisted Hair

Many brides are loving this look this year for a different take on a braid or plait. The twisted do is easy to achieve, yet adds another element to the bridal hair giving it edge. Brides are also creating twisted low up dos for a low-bun style that looks fab!

KEEP IT CASUAL

If you’re not the traditional or formal type, then why not keep it cool with a casual ensemble? If it suits your wedding style, then forget the top hat and tails or morning suit, throw caution to the wind and go for a two-piece. During the summer months you could drop the jacket all together and roll your sleeves up for a cool casual summer look.

SMART STYLING

Black is back, from smart suits to tuxedo’s, but more than just a black suit, tuxedos are back with a new look for the new season; sticking with black lapels but changing up the colour to bright blues and burgundies.

VELVET/BURGUNDY Whether the groom opts for velvet accents such as a bowtie, braces or pocket square, or goes all out with their entire outfit in rich burgundy velvet, this fabric is looking to be a popular choice amongst modern grooms. Blue may be stealing the show at the moment, but burgundy is creeping in for both full suits and accessories. Watch this space!

MOODY BLUES Torre

Still a firm favourite for groomswear is blue suits, and although navy has been a mainstay for a long while, we’re seeing an uptake in brighter blues, along with pale and pastel blues.

MIX & MATCH

Many grooms are throwing the rule book of a traditional matching 3 piece out the window and opting for a mismatched suit for the big day, with contrasting colours and patterns including check and paisley, for a unique look to remember.

PETER & HANNAH’S

country retreat

Photography by Caitlin + Jones www.caitlinandjones.co.uk

WHEN: Saturday 30th September 2017 WHERE: The Coniston Hotel Country Estate and Spa, Skipton

After 18 months of planning, the wedding of Peter and Hannah Jennings at The Coniston Hotel Country Estate and Spa on the outskirts of Skipton was everything they could have ever hoped for. Not only did the wedding party and guests enjoy a wonderful day, but also a fabulous weekend all together in the heart of some stunning North Yorkshire countryside. Hannah and Peter, who live on the outskirts of Huddersfield, both work for regional building societies and met through a mutual friend. After getting engaged, they began to plan their wedding and chose the Skipton hotel and spa because of its idyllic location on the edge of stunning open countryside. Almost 90 guests attended

the civil ceremony at 2pm on September 30, 2017 which was followed by a delicious threecourse wedding breakfast. The celebrations continued into the early hours with a party, live band, a buffet and a further 60 evening guests. One of the wedding guests had travelled from his home in South Africa to be with Hannah and Peter on their big day. Hannah, who works for the Yorkshire Building Society at the head office in Bradford, said: “Because a lot of the guests made a weekend of it and stayed at the

hotel, we had time to spend with them all the day before, on the wedding day itself and also the day after. “All the girls got together in the spa the day before and enjoyed time together, while some of the boys went clay pigeon shooting.’’ On the wedding day itself, the weather was slightly mixed but this didn’t stop the wedding photographer capturing some great moments outside in the hotel’s extensive grounds. For the ceremony, Hannah wore a white lace gown with a sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice, cap sleeves, a long train and a veil. She carried a bouquet of white roses, gypsophila and foliage. Her bridesmaids were her three best friends who wore steel grey dresses and carried bunches of gypsophila. The couple chose a naked wedding cake made of three tiers all in differing chocolate flavours. Hannah did much of the

planning herself but is full of praise for the Coniston Hotel and its staff. She said: “A friend of mine helped design the wedding stationery and we did our own ‘Save the Date’ notices. Luckily everything went to plan on the day itself and the hotel staff got everything spot on from start to finish. The staff were amazing and really helped to put us at ease with their great attention to detail.’’ Hannah said that for her, the best part of the wedding, was when her aunt read a poem which perfectly summed up the couple’s feelings and relationship. Two days after the wedding, Peter and Hannah left for a minihoneymoon to the Greek island of Zante, where they enjoyed a week relaxing in a spa resort before returning to work. Peter works for the Skipton Building Society in Leeds. They are planning a longer honeymoon to South Africa at a later date.

JAMES & EMILY’S

fabulously festive day

Photography by Gav Harrison Photography www.gavharrisonphotography.com

WHEN: Saturday 23rd December 2017 WHERE: Waterton Park Hotel, Wakefield

Following a Boxing Day wedding proposal, James and Emily Lawton knew that their big day had to be a winter wedding just before Christmas.

42 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

The couple, who live in Halifax, were married at Waterton Park Hotel on the outskirts of Wakefield on Saturday December 23, 2017 and picked a fabulous fine, dry and crisp winter’s day which was perfect in every way. Emily said: “James proposed to me two years earlier in front of my parent’s Christmas tree, so it seemed fitting to be married so close to Christmas Day. We wanted a day full of richness, warmth and cosiness. Above all though, this was always going to be a big

wedding to bring together two amazing families. We are so family orientated and this shines through in everything I planned. Because, without love and family... what else really matters!?’’ For two years Emily planned the wedding down to the finest detail, using her very organised ‘teacher brain’. “The hotel does have a wedding planner and she was amazing but I really wanted to plan most things myself. We wanted a venue that offered accommodation as well and

I couldn’t fault it. Our 93 day guests enjoyed an amazing five-course wedding breakfast and we were joined by another 90 people for the evening party.’’ Because the wedding was so near Christmas, the couple chose a champagne and red wine colour theme for their day which was echoed in the reception decor, the flowers and five-tier wedding cake. The couple even organised a snow machine, a magician at the drinks reception, some personalised beers and had their

‘It was all very emotional. The ceremony was so special for us as we wrote our own wedding vows’ names projected onto the outside of the venue’s manor house. Despite all the amazing attention to detail, their favourite part of the day was the wedding ceremony and for Emily, being walked down the aisle by her dad after he had seen her for the first time in her wedding gown. She said: “It was all very emotional. The ceremony was so special for us as we wrote our own wedding vows and had three readings. At the reception we had a video message from my brother Kyle who is serving with the Army in Afghanistan.

Before the wedding, my bridesmaids presented me with a beautiful hamper of favourite things which was also very emotional.’’ For the civil ceremony, Emily wore a hand made Adam Shaw Couture wedding gown. The exclusive dress, from the Huddersfield-based designer, was created in a blush shade with a fitted lace bodice adorned with Swarovski crystals, a cape-effect at the shoulder and a ball gown skirt. Her veil was held in place with a beaded hair piece.

She carried a bouquet of champagne roses. Emily had six bridesmaids, three of whom wore champagne coloured dresses and the other three wore gowns in a red wine shade. They all carried rustic style bouquets trimmed with berries, pine cones and foliage. Among the guests (for the photographs) was the couple’s Border Collie dog Bobby. Emily is a primary school teacher in Halifax, soon to be relocating to Bangkok and James is a project manager for a housing company. During the Easter holidays after their Christmas wedding, the couple enjoyed a honeymoon visiting Singapore, Bali and Hong Kong.

LLOREN & JONATHAN’S

meadow wedding

Photography by Clive Miller Photography www.clivemillerphotography.co.uk

WHEN: Saturday 16th June 2018 WHERE: All Saints Church, Misterton / Loversall Farm, Doncaster

A Midnight proposal on London’s Tower Bridge was followed 18 months later by a traditional church wedding for newlyweds Jonathan and Lloren Goodall. The couple were married at All Saints Church, Misterton and then enjoyed a wedding reception hosted by Unique Occasions at Loversall Farm near Doncaster. Lloren said, “We wanted a wedding that was a representation of us as a couple. We had giant tipis in a wedding meadow which was the perfect backdrop for our own country life. Our table names were names of tents we have owned as we are avid campers.’’ The wedding on Saturday June 16, 2018 was organised entirely by Lloren after she had recovered

from the shock of the Tower Bridge proposal. “It was totally unexpected. We had gone away to London for my birthday and the proposal was a wonderful way to end our day of sightseeing in the capital.’’ The couple have been together for over 14 years and have two children - but still wanted to have the wedding of their dreams. “It was the most incredible day and not a thing went wrong. All our suppliers were wonderful and it was a very relaxed and wonderful day,’’ said Lloren.

‘When my mum was getting re-married, my sister and I picked out a gown which I really loved. Later when I got engaged, I went back and amazingly they still had one. It must have been fate’ 44 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

For the ceremony, Lloren, who had lost three stone in weight ready for the big day and was given away by her mum Gill Moran, wore an ivory Princess style gown with a lace bodice, full tulle skirt, lace-up corset style back and diamante belt at the waist. She carried a rustic style bouquet of mixed pastel flowers and was attended by five bridesmaids who wore blush pink dresses and carried bunches of gypsophila. The couple’s son Jackson (aged seven) was a pageboy and their daughter Myla (aged five) was the flower girl. Lloren said: “When my mum was getting re-married, my sister and I went with her to look for a dress. I picked out a gown which I really loved. Later when I got engaged, I went back to the bridal shop with a photo of the dress and amazingly they still had one. It must have been fate.’’ After the service, the couple and

their guests enjoyed a fabulous reception in the wedding meadow at Loversall Farm and Jonathan and Lloren spent their wedding night in the venue’s Hideaway Hut. After being served delicious canapes, all the guests enjoyed a traditional roast beef dinner followed by dessert. In the evening, the celebrations continued and everyone enjoyed a party with a hog roast supper. In keeping with their wedding colour theme, the couple had a three tier wedding cake decorated with flowers, raffia and cupcakes. Following the big day, the couple enjoyed a honeymoon to Iceland and are also planning a family holiday to the Greek island of Rhodes. Lloren said: “We really did have a fabulous day after all the hard work of planning the wedding. We both loved every minute of our special day and it was wonderful to finish off the day with photographs in the sunset.’’

ALEX & CATHRYN’S

relaxed celebrations Photography by Louise Pollitt Photography www.louisepollittphotography.com

WHEN: Friday 6th July 2018 WHERE: Wakefield Town Hall / Oulton Hall, Leeds

Alex and Cathryn Worth’s big day was a true family occasion - with their nine-year-old twin daughters walking down the aisle as their bridesmaids.

46 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Daughters Emily and Jennifer were thrilled to play a pivotal role in their mum and dad’s big day and even more thrilled when they were invited to go on a two-week honeymoon to Cyprus with them. Cathryn said, “Everyone asked if we were going on honeymoon alone but we couldn’t leave them out. We worked around the school holiday dates and booked for the four of us to go together.’’ The family only recently returned from their ‘honeymoon’ after their wedding at Wakefield Town Hall on

Friday July 6 this year. For the wedding ceremony, attended by nearly 40 guests, Cathryn chose an ivory gown with a long train, flared skirt and a corset style bodice. She carried a cascading bouquet of sunflowers and white roses in memory of her late mother who loved sunflowers. Including the couple’s twin daughters, they had three bridesmaids who wore silvery lilac dresses and carried similar flowers to the bride and wore flower crowns in their hair.

Following the wedding ceremony, the couple and more guests enjoyed an informal reception at Oulton Hall near Leeds, where they were served a barbecue on the balcony of the Claret Jug Restaurant overlooking the 18th hole of the golf course. Cathryn said, “We didn’t want a formal sit down meal for our reception, so organised something much more casual for our guests, which went on into the evening with more celebrations and a DJ. The weather was fabulous with

‘What we wanted really was quite a low key wedding which was different to the norm and more informal. All our guests loved it and thought it was a great idea.’’ Although Cathryn did most of the wedding planning herself, it was husband Alex who took on the role of decking up the venue with sunflowers to tie in with the theme of the day.

“He’s more artistic than me”, said Cathryn. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for cupcakes with sunflower icing toppers. “The day was fabulous with everything going to plan, apart from having to rush around a little to get ready. You always think you have plenty of time and then realise it’s

nearly time to set off. The staff at Oulton Hall were brilliant too and the best part of the day for me was when the photographer took the two of us off to have our wedding photographs done in the beautiful grounds. Our guests loved it and all had a great time, and we had a fabulous day so we couldn’t have asked for more,’’ she said. JIMMY & ANNA’S

country garden wedding

Photography by Joanne Jacobs Photography www.jojacobsphotography.com

WHEN: September 2017 WHERE: The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland

The stunning surroundings of The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland was the setting for the wedding of Jimmy and Anna Hampshire in September 2017. The bride, a marketing manager, and the bridegroom, a company director, chose the venue for their wedding after visiting the popular garden the previous year on their fifth anniversary. The couple met on a blind date at The Huntsman pub above Holmfirth after being set up by a mutual friend six years ago. Since then they have set up home together in the village of Meltham near Holmfirth and started to plan their wedding after Jimmy proposed on a Cornish beach during a summer holiday in 2016. Anna did most of the wedding planning herself, using her design experience to create unique wedding invitations, place cards, a welcome board, table plan and much more. She also planned the venue décor, table settings

and room staging herself. For the ceremony, held in the pavilion which has a backdrop overlooking the garden’s impressive fountain, the bride wore an ivory lace Maggie Sottero dress with cap sleeves, a fitted bodice and short train. She carried a bouquet of white Yorkshire roses and greenery. Her bridesmaids wore silver grey dresses, all in slightly different styles, and carried similar flowers to the bride. Her younger bridesmaid was her sister Esha, who wore pink. After the ceremony, all the guests had time to take in the splendour of The Alnwick Garden and enjoy a drinks reception with canapes while the wedding photographs were being taken. Music was provided by a very popular wedding singer who kept

“All our guests loved the garden setting, it couldn’t have been more special. The whole day was wonderful and made extra special because my dad was able to be with us”

all the guests entertained before a wedding breakfast was held for nearly 70 guests with a three-course meal. The celebrations continued into the evening with dancing and a buffet supper for guests. Jimmy and Anna broke with tradition and chose a four-tier cheese wedding cake, along with a table of various home-made cakes, which proved very popular with their guests. One of the most welcome guests at the wedding was the bride’s father Paul Haigh who travelled nearly 13,000 miles from his home in Wellington, New Zealand to be there. Anna said, “We had a perfect wedding day, everything went to plan and we couldn’t have asked for better weather or a more perfect venue. We fell in love with The Alnwick Garden when we visited the previous year and decided straight away that we wanted to

have our wedding there.” The Alnwick Garden was created by the Duchess of Northumberland from a forgotten plot of land and is adjacent to Alnwick Castle, where much of the Harry Potter movie series was made. The garden was designed for all four seasons of the year and includes a beautiful Cherry Blossom walk, walled garden, maze, a poison garden and has a large cascading fountain at its centre. “All our guests loved the garden setting, it couldn’t have been more special. The whole day was wonderful and made extra special because my dad was able to be with us,” said Anna. A few days after the wedding, the couple left for a 10-day honeymoon to the island of Bali where they enjoyed three days in Bali’s cultural centre of Ubud followed by seven days in the beach resort of Seminyak.

{ FLOWERS }

beautiful

blooms

GREENERY

Your choice of flowers is one of the main talking points of any wedding. There’s so much choice and so many styles, it can be hard to know where to begin.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourites with a few tips to help you on your way to choosing your beautiful blooms.

Greenery

This year - and looking ahead to 2019 - green foliage is still big news for wedding flowers following on from Pantone’s colour of the year 2017 - greenery and the 2018 Royal Wedding. Just as St George’s Chapel in Windsor was dressed with green foliage, white garden roses, foxgloves and peonies, you too can opt for the same stunning green and white combination although obviously on a smaller scale and to suit your budget. This combination of natural greens with paper-white flowers is the hottest look around, according to top flower designers and florists.

WILD & WINTERY

50 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Natural

The whole ‘natural’ look can also be captured in one of the season’s other big looks: meadow flowers. The key to a ‘meadow’ bouquet is to ask for light and textured foliage combined with lots of small florals and buds with just a few bolder blooms to stand out. Pastel shades such as soft pinks, lilacs and creams will continue to be popular to create a real feeling of romance and traditional English garden.

Seasonal

Your choice of flowers can often depend on the time of year. Choosing flowers that are in season can often be best for your budget as out of season flowers will be mush more difficult to source. If you have a spring or summer wedding, then delicate soft pastel shades are perfect. However if you’re booking a winter wedding, then deeper colours seem better suited to the season, although some brides opt for winter white, champagne or pale blue blooms. Likewise, autumn bouquets conjure up thoughts of seasonal rich shades with couples opting for burgundies, navy blues and burnt oranges.

Time to prepare

At the beginning of your search for the perfect flowers, set a budget and stick to it. So that a florist can plan your wedding flowers to perfection, it’s a good idea to give several months notice ahead of the big day. With some florists being booked up a year and more in advance it’s a good idea to meet with your florist soon after your planning has begun.

BRIGHT & BOLD

PRETTY PASTELS

{ INVITES }

you’re

invited

There’s nothing more exciting than a little paper prettyness landing on your doorstep and giving your guests their first glimpse into your big day.

So you’ve set the date, booked your venue and have decided on your day’s style, it’s now time to announce it to your loved ones.

Save the dates

Give your guests the heads up with a ‘Save the Date’ card. Usually sent out around 12 months ahead, they are especially useful when getting married abroad or during busy times like school holidays, bank holidays and Christmas. Normally reserved for all day guest’s, they’re not a necessity, but will increase your guests chance of attendance.

Your style

Whether you’re opting for a traditional affair, a relaxed event or something completely wacky, your invitation design and wording should hint towards the formality of your wedding, including your colour and theme.

52 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Sending your invitations

Once you’ve confirmed the finer details, it’s time to send your main invites. They should include all the details your guest needs to know; when, where and rsvp details. Additional information you may wish to include is gift details, recommended accommodation, dress code (if there is one), children (if opting for an adult only day). The general rule is to send them a few months ahead of the big day. Some couples choose to send them 6 months or more ahead, especially when organising a large event or around busy times, to ensure everything is confirmed in advance and saving last minute stresses.

{ CAKES }

Photographed at I Do Wedding Exhibitions - Ice Sheffield

hot

cakes Possibly our favourite article to write (because who doesn’t like talking about cake) is what’s hot in wedding cakes for this season.

NAKED

Naked

Popularity for naked cakes is at an all-time high with no sign of slowing down. These cakes lend themselves well to rustic and casual themed weddings, looking completely effortless but tasting amazing. Couples are adding fresh fruits atop these cakes for a fresh and inviting look.

BLACK Photographed at I Do Wedding Exhibitions - Ice Sheffield

Botanical

We’re seeing lots of real floral and greenery accents on cakes this new season. With a lot of focus on cactus decorations believe it or not; watch those spikes though if you get a slice!

Gold accents

Veering off from the full metallic display this wedding season, we’re seeing a lot of gold decoration in wedding cakes, whether it’s gold leaf, or gold painted fondant displayed like a regal crown on the top tier. Gold is in!

Black

A new emerging trend this season is black wedding cakes; with the addition of gold accents, this is tipped to be a big trend next year. Mixed with different textures such as ruffles and baroque detailing, a black wedding cake is a real statement centrepiece for your wedding.

Celestial

GOLD 54 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Taking influence from the geode cake, celestial looking cakes are in for next season. With marbled tiers complimenting a painted starlit sky, couples can cut into a black as night sponge for a dramatic yet delectable effect.

BOTANICAL

HAND PAINTED

Hand painted

Photographed at I Do Wedding Exhibitions - Ice Sheffield

Focusing in on hand-painted cake, brides are now going for hand painted floral cake creations, eliminating the need for real flower decoration. This creates a dainty and feminine looking wedding cake that’s pleasing on the eye.

Square

Starting to emerge and sure to be trending soon, are square wedding cakes. Three square tiers offer something different to the round cake (and you get more slices out of them too!). From naked squares, to flavoured fondant covered loveliness, the square wedding cake is one to watch!

White fondant

A mainstay for the new wedding season, traditional cakes are as popular as ever, and lend themselves well to any theme of wedding too. We’re seeing white cakes mixed with gold tones and made square, for a cake that’s traditional with a modern twist!

SQUARE

Geometric

We’re still seeing geometric cakes, but as more of an accent, rather than a full on geometric design all over the cake. Whether hand painted, or cut out fondant shapes displayed along the cake in a sweeping fashion, geometric is holding its own in the trending stakes.

To top it all off!

We’re also seeing a lot of funky cake toppers if you want to add a bit of something extra personalised to your cake. From the bride & groom’s names to lego characters, and even jigsaw pieces that fit together with the couple’s names on, adding a super romantic touch.

perfect venue

FIND YOUR

Rustic Barn Wedding

Bring the outside in

Castle, country house, hotel.... today’s list of potential wedding venues is endless. Although a church wedding is still a popular choice, more and more couples are opting for a civil ceremony where the formalities, reception and evening celebrations can all take place under the same roof. This is where venues like hotels and country houses come into their own. When opting for this style of venue, you’ll have your own wedding planner to help with the organisation of the big day, which is a real bonus; hotels and country houses tend to have ample accommodation for travelling guests too. An alternative option, usually suitable all year round, is to book a marquee in the grounds of a hotel or country house. Or if you want a real outdoor feel, a luxury tipi or even a wedding barn could be the thing for you. There is still, however, a lot to consider before finally deciding on your chosen venue.

Things you need to think about include:

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Do you want a local venue or do you want your wedding in a venue further afield? Perhaps you have a favourite destination like the Lake District, Scotland or by the coast. Most couples choose a venue local to them, but it’s becoming popular to travel out of area and make a weekend of it. Just make sure the venue has enough accommodation for travelling guests. Failing that, check out the surrounding area to find out if there plenty of alternatives close by. Weddings abroad are still a popular choice too, with Cyprus, Italy and the Caribbean high on the hit list, along with luxury cruises and yachts.

Marquee Wedding Enjoy the outdoors all year round

For an outdoor shindig

BOOKING IT

How soon in advance does a booking have to be made? Venues do get booked up very quickly, so as soon as you have a date in mind, it is a good idea to start looking. You don’t want to set your heart on a place to find it is fully booked up, as popular venues can be booked a couple of years in advance. Don’t be afraid to make your booking in good time... you’ll be amazed how time really does fly by and your big day will have arrived before you know it.

STYLE STAKES

Hotel/Country House Wedding

For a sense of grandeur 60 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Tipi Wedding

Does the venue match your style of wedding? Never book a venue without seeing it, on photos alone. You need to get a feel for the place, see where your wedding photos could be taken, see how the service and reception would be laid out and take a look at the accommodation for yourself and your guests. Make sure the decor doesn’t clash with the style you have in mind. Take a look at your food options too. Most venues will cater for both formal and informal dining, but make sure you ask.

SIZE MATTERS

Is it large enough to cater for all your guests? If you’re looking for somewhere to hold a larger wedding, your options may be a little more limited. But fear not, with a little searching, you’ll find there are still plenty of venues out there that can cater for the whole day for larger weddings too.

CHECK IT OUT

Do your homework and look at venues in your chosen area and make a list of possible venues once you have a date in mind. The internet is a great place to start in your search for a venue. You can look at venues in your area, as well as across every part of the UK and find out as much information as possible. Once you have narrowed down your choice, it’s time to arrange a visit. Most venues will offer a show round at a convenient time for you. Go and discuss your plans and see if the venue fits your ideas and aspirations. industrial LUXE

Nature features heavily in wedding décor this season, with a slight move to the industrial, featuring greenery and metallic accents as popular decor themes. Table centres help add height to the table décor with metallic geometric vases and bell jars featuring greenery for a natural look that’s both modern and industrial. There’s also emphasis on foliage table runners, leaving out the flowers for a more laid back, bare look. The nature theme continues

with the addition of laser cut wooden place names and small foliage bouquets as a wedding favours. Also emerging is a celestial décor theme, featuring crystals and gemstones as both favours and name places for a sparkly touch that your guests can enjoy.

Wreaths and blossom trees are in this season, with an overarching influence on a natural, yet refined decor look for the ceremony and throughout the venue. Metallic table runners work well with stripped back floral arrangements, featuring fern and lavender accents, which give a subtle nod to Pantone’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet. Also big news on the decor

66 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

scene are floral chandeliers hanging from the ceiling with green accents and florals draped throughout the venue. Industrial hung lighting is also emerging as a popular option, with the addition of suspended geometric shapes dotted throughout. Perspex chairs are another emerging trend this season, creating a clean backdrop that can work well with any décor theme.

rustic

woodland Rustic and woodland are still storming ahead in wedding décor popularity, with brides opting for a relaxed, stripped back feel to their wedding. Table Décor

Log slices are still really popular in rustic weddings and add the perfect base for wild flower centrepieces in mason jars tied with brown string. Single white floating tea lights also feature in rustic décor and give a warm relaxing glow for the perfect laid back atmosphere, which completes the rustic theme.

Favours and Nameplaces

Rustic favours in the form of seeds to grow your own flowers are popular rustic choices. Some couples are also opting for home-made preserves or liqueurs in tiny mason jars as a quirky, yet rustic gift for their guests. Small log slices with guest names printed on for name places also double up as a nice gift for the guests to take home after the wedding.

68 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Ceremony Décor

Hessian chair covers, with single sunflowers tied into the bow are a simple, yet colourful addition to any ceremony décor. Rustic weddings are also featuring woven branch archways with fairy lights wrapped around for the perfect focal point to say your ‘I Do’s’.

Reception Décor

Rustic wooden signs for ‘this way to the reception’ or wooden plaques with song lyrics emblazoned on them are still big hitters. Upturned wooden crates are also being fashioned as guest seating and as plinths for love letter displays. Wine barrels have been upcycled into tables for popcorn stations or even into ice boxes for bottled drinks for the guests to enjoy.

food FOR thought No longer an afterthought at the wedding reception, couples are turning it up a notch by having the food as the centre of attention with the wedding day revolving entirely around it. Let’s see what’s on the menu. Floral flavours are in

Edible flowers and floral flavours like elderflower and lavender are really sky-rocketing in popularity this year. A welcome addition to wedding menus, these flavours are also being incorporated into cocktails too.

Locally sourced fare

Couples want to know more about where their food comes from these days. So free-range and locally bred/sourced foodie fare is a must for the wedding menu. Some couples are also incorporating fresh foods that are served as they are; raspberries and cherry tomatoes offer wonderful flavour with no prep work.

Meat free menus

With the increase in vegan culture and focus largely heading towards meat free, many newlyweds are opting for a one size fits all approach with their wedding menus. No more separate menus for those who don’t eat meat; couples are creating menus to bring everyone together to experience a totally plant-based wedding menu.

72 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Miniature menu

Food served in tiny proportions is looking to be a big hit in new season weddings. Many couples are opting for scaled down versions of their favourites, so their guests can snack and converse at the same time. Mini doughnuts, quiches, slider burgers and chocolate dipped strawberries are just a few of what’s trending in miniature!

Comfort food

Whether that’s a cheese toastie with a tomato soup shooter, or a gravy filled Yorkshire pudding with an artisanal twist, the focus on comfort food has grown massively this wedding season. Comfort food menus can be completely personalised to the happy couples’ taste.

Mobile food vans

With everything from pizza to burritos, mobile food vans are brilliant at serving up a bit of what you fancy, and couples are even opting for multiple vans to offer more choice for their guests. Think fish and chips next to hot freshly cooked doughnuts and you’re onto a winner!

COMFORT

Raising the bar There’s a huge variety of mobile trucks available serving all your favourite alcoholic beverages in re-invented quirky styles! A great idea for self catered and outdoor weddings.

Gin

Still steaming ahead in popularity, Gin bars are sweeping the wedding nation. With so many varieties on offer, it would take a true connoisseur to test them all. We volunteer!

Prosecco

Always a winner, prosecco bars are inviting guests to pimp theirs up by way of fresh fruits and flavoured liqueurs for a truly personalised drink!

Craft Ale

One for the more traditional drinkers among wedding guests, but daring enough to try craft ale. These mobile bars seem to be doing really well at weddings right now, and boast artisan ales and beers from all over the world, so there’s never a lack of choice whatever you fancy.

Something different

For the non-alcoholic guests (including children), there’s allsorts to go at including milkshake bars, smoothie vans and even artisanal coffee trucks offering great alternatives to boozy beverages.

what a night! A fantastic evening was had by all at I Do’s annual Wedding Awards celebrating local wedding suppliers and supporting a very worthy charity. Now in its fourth year, the I Do Wedding Awards have become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the local wedding industry’s calendar. The stunning Ballroom at Sheffield City Hall once again played host to this glamorous evening as the top wedding suppliers from the Yorkshire, Humberside and East Midlands regions came together to celebrate their collective successes. Decided entirely by the votes of the brides and grooms who have personally used these wedding suppliers, the 2018 awards saw over 400 entrants, with over 100 making the finals and 25 being announced as category winners. In true Hollywood glitz style, a red carpet arrival and champagne reception welcomed the evening’s guests and made them feel like a million dollars as they mingled and excitedly conversed about the festivities to come. Host for the evening, local celebrity

76 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Stephanie Hirst, welcomed over 250 guests to a fine dining four course meal.

TALK ABOUT A CHARITABLE EVENT!

Part of the awards, as well as honouring our local wedding suppliers, is to raise much needed funds for local charities. The chosen charity for 2018 was Prostate Cancer UK. A charity prize draw was held during the evening and guests were invited to show their support with a minimum donation of £10. This got them a Willy Wonka style prize chocolate bar, in which 20 winning golden tickets were hidden. Each Golden ticket won a fantastic prize donated by our generous suppliers and affiliates. In total, we raised over £2000 for this very worthy cause. A huge thank you goes out to all that donated prizes and money during the evening. { HONEYMOONS } Old Man Of Storr Rock formation, Isle Of Skye

1.

Feathy, Whitsand Bay, Cornwall

SCOTTISH ISLES TOUR The drive up through the towering mountains of the Scottish Highlands will take your breath-away. Then, imagine touring some of the most beautiful and remote islands in the UK, including Lewis, Mull, Harris, Skye, , where stunning scenery awaits all year round. Take the car and tour the islands hopping on and off ferries, discovering delightful villages, towns, historic castles and charming restaurants on the way. Take a trip to colourful seaside town of Tobermory, Oban and the outdoor capital of the UK, Fortwilliam, nestled on the banks on Loch Linnhe.

BEACH HUT HOLIDAY

If you’re after the beach vibe without the flight, Seaglass in Cornwall is the perfect retreat. Overlooking Whitsand Bay, Seaglass provides your very own beach hut, which is every bit as cozy as you can imagine. Also Beach Cove in Devon is another top beach hut destination.

COTTAGE HOLIDAY Fans of the film ‘The Holiday’ will love this one. Imagine travelling to a delightful cottage in the countryside, where getting cosy is a must! If you like even more seclusion on your honeymoon getaway, the coastguard’s cottage on Holy Island in Northumberland is a great choice. With a road that disappears twice a day, you will love being trapped together on your very own island of romance.

WOODLAND GETAWAY

Whether you’re a stay at home kind of couple, or the adventurous type, we’ve rounded up some top honeymoon destinations to spend your first few weeks together as newlyweds.

Lindisfarne Castle, Holy Island

There are tonnes of log cabin retreats throughout the UK that are ideal for a honeymooner’s quiet getaway. Imagine having your own treehouse, but bigger and more luxurious. Top woodland retreats are the Treehouse at Harptree Court in Somerset and Cairngorm Lodges in Aberdeenshire.

SPA BREAK What better way to start married life together than a spa getaway. You don’t have to travel far to find an oasis of tranquillity, with many retreats right on our doorstep. Relax in the pool, jacuzzi or sauna, choose from a range of spa treatments and enjoy toasting your newlywed status while having your stresses massaged away.

AMERICAN ROADTRIP If you’d prefer an American adventure, a road trip could be the answer. Take a self-drive through Chicago and visit the Grand Canyon by way of helicopter to bring your senses alive. Or check out the Santa Monica Pier, drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and see what California has to offer, while sampling the local wine (always a must).

6. The Grand Canyon Tibet

A honeymoon safari is a once in a lifetime getaway. Imagine seeing animals in nature you’d never see in the UK. Tour operators like Wayfair and Kuoni can help plan your safari honeymoon, whether it’s Tanzania or Kenya, and promise to make this a honeymoon to remember.

LUXURY CRUISE Why not take in a few destinations and head out on a luxury cruise. Take in the sights and taste the Med or go all American and hit up San Francisco and LA. You can hop back on the ship after each day and be wined and dined to your heart’s content.

Your honeymoon should be planned for as part of the wedding budget. It’s a good idea to book in advance so you can take advantage of any deals available. Sure you can get some last minute bargains, but if you’ve got a certain place at heart, you don’t want to miss out.

Booking your honeymoon out of season could save you money that you can then spend on treating your other half while you’re away.

SELF-CATERING OR ALL-INCLUSIVE There are advantages to both options; if you want a laze around the beach or pool sipping cocktails with everything taken care of, then all inclusive is for you - this option is best for budgeting too. But if you really want to discover your destination, go self-catering. It’s a great chance to go explore your local town or city and see all the foodie and adventuring delights it has to tempt you.

TELL THE HOTEL

You’d be surprised how many hotels will offer free treats such as champagne, food hampers in your room upon arrival or even room upgrades to their honeymooning couples. These little touches add extra romance to your honeymoon.

GO STRAIGHT AWAY

Not the second you say I Do of course, but if you can, go on honeymoon not too long after your wedding whilst the magic and excitement of the big day is still alive, even if it’s just a weekend stay. Make sure you take some time out for you and your new husband/wife.

7.

Adrenaline junkies will love this one. Visit a destination that’s full of activities for you and your newlywed. Go diving with great white sharks in Cape Town, or bungee jumping and skiing in New Zealand. Or even better, visit Tibet, a land of high mountains, glistening lakes, and expansive prairies, where taking in the sights of the Himalayas, home of Mount Everest, is a must. Also, if you’re a fan of cycling, the Tibetan Plateau is a must see; be prepared though, this ride will push your cycling skills to the limit!

A CULTURAL JOURNEY For couples wanting to bathe in culture on their honeymoon, the possibilities are endless. Rajasthan may not first come to mind, but when you witness the temples, palaces and especially the Taj Mahal, you will be left in awe. Thailand is another bucket list cultural destination. With its golden Buddhist temples and welcoming Thai people, it’s hard not to fall in love with this stunning destination.

Mixology

Pizza making

It’s time to plan the hen/stag party, and your maid of honour/best man doesn’t know where to start. Luckily for you, I Do have it covered! We’ve rounded up some top stag and hen activities for you and your party.

‘It’s A Knockout’/ The hen-limpics

Brilliant for the competitive types; hen and stag parties are centering round ‘It’s A Knockout’ style parties, perfect to get the adrenaline pumping and pit your skills against your mates.

Paintballing

We couldn’t write about stag and hen party activities without this one. Paintballing is still high up the list for what stag and hens are opting for and let’s face it, everyone loves to take a cheap shot when their mate’s not looking. Protect your unmentionables!

Creative workshops

These are always a popular choice with both stags and hens. Creative workshops such as mixology classes to make cocktails, sushi making classes and even pizza making are all top of the list for getting your hands dirty, and getting something to eat/drink at the end of it!

Outdoor activities

For the explorer type, anything that involves getting outside in the fresh air is always going to be a winner. Go climbing or abseiling with your hen/stag party, or try canoeing or kayaking for a real adrenaline rush from Parson House Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

Brewery tour

A brewery tour can be paired with a trip away, such as visiting the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and learning how to pour the perfect pint! Or go even further afield with a brewery tour in Berlin or Prague!

Party bus

A party bus is a firm favourite among both stags and hens and brings the party right to your doorstep. Pair this with a UK city break to Newcastle, Liverpool or Brighton and see the sights at the same time!

Paintballing

Having a ‘mixed’ celebration

We’re seeing a huge increase in mixed stag and hen parties, with more and more couples opting to have a shared celebration with everyone together. These days, the happy couple tend to have more of a shared friend group, which makes a mixed celebration a no-brainer. Couples are opting for getaways altogether to places like Amsterdam or Marbella, with other couples choosing Bride VS Groom days where they’re pitted against each other in activities like paintballing or assault courses for adrenaline-fuelled fun!

“Alexandra played at our church wedding and she played beautifully. All of the guests were blown away with the music she so elegantly played. Would highly recommend as she is not only a very talented violinist she is also such a lovely lady and very friendly.
