A Favorite Four-Letter Word

What can you say about love? It comes in all shapes and sizes, for so many things, and is so individual, yet universal all at once. This month’s issue celebrates the emotion we’re fortunate to experience and to give to others near and dear: love.

Someone we forget to prioritize when it comes to showing love is often the person we’re closest to: ourself. We hope that this issue and the article on page 40 inspires you to do just that. We’ve got 20 great ways you can treat yourself to some self-care any time of the year.

And on page 34, we aim to inspire you when it comes to appreciating the place you likely spend most of your time: your home. After all, when you love your property, you’re really showing yourself love. Am I right?

Showing love and appreciation for those around us is what makes our community and our hearts soar. A perfect example of that comes from the work done by local nonprofit Laney’s Legacy of Hope. Learn more about the organization that aims to serve pediatric cancer patients and their families on page 9.

In The Look on page 16 we celebrate what’s often seen as the symbol of love, the heart. Discover where you can shop locally for products to add some heart to your wardrobe, home and more. Finally, if you're aiming to shop for your Valentine locally, start with the ideas in our Valentine's Day Spotlight section beginning on page 38!

ONE MORE THING

Don’t miss our special Women In Business section in this month’s issue beginning on page 18 and get to know some of the ladies that help make Berks County great.

“I love to play games! And I think Ultimate Catch Phrase is a new fave! When it comes to movies, I’m a sucker for romantic comedies!”

“Growing up we always had a big jigsaw puzzle to work on throughout the winter.”

“My favorite game on a snowy day is either Apples to Apples or classic Bingo. My in-laws got the kids a Bingo game for Christmas, complete with the tumbler cage, numbered balls and sheets and it’s always a blast to play!”

“I’d have to say we’re pretty big on trivia in my house. It can get pretty competitive.” Nikki M. Murry editor

"One of my old time favorite movies is The Goonies. It’s always my go-to for a snowy movie day. It never gets old!"

COFFEE BREWED WITH LOVE IN MOHNTON

When Jane Irwin introduced her boyfriend Shane Kilpatrick to coffee, buying him his first bag of a whole-bean variety, he was hit with inspiration and took to roasting even fresher beans at home. That lead to purchasing a larger roaster, and word of Shane’s talents grew. In 2019, Hill Road Coffee Roasters got its start in the pair’s home-certified kitchen, selling bags of beans at local pop-up farmers markets. Today, customers can enjoy handcrafted pour-overs of any Hill Road Coffee Roaster blend, all roasted on the premises and celebrating its 1-year anniversary at 360 E. Wyomissing Avenue, Ste. B in Mohnton, or purchase half- or full-pound bags with a grind service available. You can also find their blends served at local restaurants and eateries including Flanagan’s Pub and The Greenhouse Café, and beans sold at locations including Dundore & Heister and Kimberton Whole Foods. Online ordering is available at hillroadcoffeeroasters.com. Follow along on Facebook and Instagram @hillroadcoffeeroasters. – NIKKI M. MURRY

All Ages Series Returns to KU

Those looking for family-friendly performances to enjoy with their children need look no further than Kutztown University as its Family Series returns this month with a Feb. 5 performance from POPOVICH Pet Theatre at 2pm in Schaeffer Auditorium. The fun, fur-filled circus features feats from 30 animals rescued from shelters. On March 19 at 2pm, audiences can enjoy The Jason Bishop Show, an award-winning illusionist showcasing cutting-edge Op-Art and Plasma illusions. “The shows are enjoyed by generations and are both affordable and fun,” says Amy Botwright at KU. Not just for KU students and staff, the series is open to the public. Explains Botwright of the series’ return, “We have heard for many years that patrons missed our Family Series. As we are all returning to live performances after a break, this felt like the best time to reintroduce an old favorite in a new way.” For more info and tickets visit kutztownpresents.org – NIKKI M. FROM BINGO TREATS TO A STAND-ALONE BUSINESS

As a girl, Trish Morey created delicious cheesecakes and treats with her mother and grandmother. As an adult helping to run a local bingo kitchen while her partner Don volunteered as an EMT, she dusted off her family cheesecake recipe for the patron players to enjoy. They enjoyed it so much that they’d call to reserve a slice prior to bingo night so they wouldn’t miss out. It may have been then that she knew she was onto something. Today, Trish’s Specialty Cheesecakes calls 20 N. 6th Avenue in West Reading home. Customers are treated like members of an extended family and are invited to enjoy their treats for dine-in or take-out. Small games are provided for young visitors and the shop is pet-friendly, too, making sure there are treats for furry family members stopping by. Offered are cheesecakes in as many as 23 flavors, in both 4-inch and 9-inch varieties. Try one of the unique, handcrafted stuffed varieties and enjoy what many assert is “the best cheesecake I’ve ever eaten.” For more info call 484.258.1992. – NIKKI M. MURRY

A Young Girl’s Legacy Lives On

LANEY’S LEGACY OF HOPE

Inspired

by

Berks youngster Delaney Brown and her fight with pediatric cancer, Laney’s Legacy of Hope, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 2014 by her parents in her memory. Laney lost her battle on Christmas Day of 2013, but her spirit of courage, her hope and her fashionista sense of style lives on and has touched the lives of many.

Laney’s Legacy of Hope is comprised of a board of both family and friends, including President and Laney’s mom, Jennifer Capone-Brown, Vice President and Laney’s Aunt, Jenell Wolf, Secretary and Laney’s grandmother, Linda Capone, and four others who fill various supporting roles. All members are volunteers.

Their mission is to engage in fundraising activities to provide assistance to support research projects and treatment options for pediatric high-risk cancer patients with the goal of finding cures and means of prevention. The nonprofit also provides assistance to children and their families as they navigate a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Jenell says, “What’s amazing is that Laney’s story has continued on through other kids that are fighting.”

Spreading Help & Hope

Recognizing the financial burdens that can arise during these tough fighting times, Laney’s Legacy of Hope has a unique way of helping families. Jenell says, “What we do that’s a little different is that we just give straight cash, and they can use it for whatever they want. What Jenn wanted to do was just remove that financial barrier for parents. Whatever they want to use it for, whether it’s for play or necessities, we do not set any limits to that.” She continues, “We want to be different in that we recognize that it’s such a challenging time for families that we just want to make the time that they have with their loved ones as meaningful as it can be.”

Of the funds raised, 50 percent goes right to families, while 40 percent goes to research and 10 percent to operational costs. To date, the nonprofit has served about 109 kids,

known as Laney’s Fighters, and has awarded three checks totaling $300,000 to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Putting the Fun in Fundraising

Four events each year really pack a punch in supporting the organization, including:

- The Golden Gala – children and families that Laney’s Legacy has helped come together for a night of fun, food and raffles. Think circus-themed with fire throwers and aerialists and raffles including an all-inclusive cruise vacation!

- Golf Fore Hope – a 4-person scramble with a 50/50 cash prize raffle and a helicopter ball drop.

- Fashionista 5K – An event in true Laney girly girl style. Run or walk in memory or in honor of all the brave fighters, and don’t forget to don a colorful tutu.

- Radiothon – Y102 hosts an annual radiothon raising funds benefitting children with pediatric cancer.

The mission began with Laney but it’s not just about her; it’s for all the children and families facing the same situation. Jenell says, “People being able to see the kids that they actually directly impact is really what helps our mission.”

Ebony McNeil

FOUNDER, THE FORGE

Ebony McNeil founded The Forge in January 2021 to help men become better men. Since its founding, The Forge is growing quickly and providing an avenue for men to uplift each other and their community.

The Forge is based on three pillars: positive imagery (a positive image of masculinity, not something that is toxic and doesn’t allow men to express themselves), quality fellowship (connecting men with men who will help them grow) and service (we believe all men can be leaders regardless of job title, but leadership starts with service because you learn to be humble and uplift others).

Q: How does the group achieve its mission?

We have monthly Forge Forums where we help men tackle issues like leadership, accountability, conflict resolution, anger management, self-care and more. Men don’t often express themselves, and we want them to know it’s okay to be vulnerable and to admit they’re not okay. The discussions at the forums do this. We also have a professional men’s clothing drive to collect suits and dress clothing for men in the community to help them make a good first impression for job interviews and other important events. Men in the group also engage in community service; for example, we have block clean-ups, donations to women’s shelters, and we organized a COVID-19 vaccine drive. Last April, we also hosted a Father & Son Brunch with motivational speakers and what I call “maturation stations” where local businesses and business owners taught men about different skills they need as they mature. They learned things like car basics, financial basics, grooming and even how to tie a tie.

Q: Can any man join The Forge?

Yes, we are open to any man age 16 and older. No man is excluded. One of our forum strengths is having men from many different

demographics connect and learn from each other. You may be from different demographics, but you learn you share similar struggles and you can help each other. Also, the forums are free to attend.

Q: What new things are on the horizon for The Forge?

In 2023, I plan to host a podcast, The Forge Focus , and interview people who will discuss the topics I mentioned earlier and other topics to help men’s holistic development. We also want to have a leadership academy for young men and a mentorship program.

Q: The Forge definitely keeps you busy. When you get some downtime, how do you relax and have fun?

I couldn’t do any of the things I do without my amazing wife, but between our jobs, The Forge and our four sons, we’re very busy; however, we make it a point to have monthly date nights and family time on the weekends. I also coach my kids’ sports teams.

Check out

The Forge’s website (theforgeforum.org) or find The Forge on Facebook or Instagram (@theForgeForum) to learn more about the group’s work, programs and events.

Mark your calendars. Forge Forums are held the fourth Wednesday of each month in Alvernia University’s Reading CollegeTowne building at 401 Penn Street.

Calling All Leaders!

Connect, Network, Learn Best Practices and Solve Problems

If you are a CEO, owner or principal, you are involved in making critical decisions every day. Where do you turn for advice? Who helps you evaluate ideas, share concerns and avoid costly mistakes? The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) is excited to announce its new CEO Roundtable. The goal is to engage peers, give voice and create a confidential forum for CEOs enabling them to share information and learn about relevant new trends or solutions to ongoing issues, which can be brought back and implemented to improve an organization.

A seasoned facilitator will lead the Roundtable to maximize your valuable time. The Roundtable will be held four times per year from Noon to 1:30pm. Lunch will be provided for participants, and all sessions will convene at the Center for Business Excellence located at 49 Commerce Drive, Wyomissing. While CEO participants are encouraged to attend in-person, they will have the option to attend virtually when necessary.

The Roundtable forum provides attendees with confidential meetings with other high-caliber decision makers to share common growth concerns and challenges. This interactive platform allows for the sharing of unbiased feedback and to challenge and test assumptions to make critical decisions.

“Peer roundtables are important because they provide a unique opportunity to share and learn with a group of peers in a completely safe environment,” says Mo Fathelbab, Forum Resources Network president and author of Forum: The Secret

Advantage of Successful Leaders. “As a CEO, it’s often lonely at the top. You can’t share everything with your employees, partners, board members or investors. Members of a roundtable have no personal interest in your decisions.”

The value of networking can’t be overemphasized; the opportunity to connect and share similar experiences is invaluable. The experiences shared by your peers can open new perspectives and broaden your vision for your business. Gain the power and insight of other CEOs, owners and principals who understand your reality and are accountable for growth and results. Join the CEO Roundtable today and move your business forward in new directions and to new heights.

Potential topics include attracting and retaining talent, developing a leadership team, employee engagement, the virtual workplace, market disruption, developing a highly effective and sustainable workplace culture, making a critical hire, finding success at work and home, and more!

To be eligible to join the CEO Roundtable a business should meet the criteria below:

- Participant must be a Chief Executive Officer, President, Owner or Principal of an organization.

- Organization should employ at least 10, but no more than 100 employees.

- Organization must be located in Berks County or the Greater Reading region.

- Eligible organizations include manufacturers, service providers, construction, nonprofit and health sciences.

The investment for GRCA members is $500. GRCA members who are Business Leader Level ($1,500) join for only $250 and Community Builder Level ($2,500) or above can join for free. To register, visit tinyurl.com/CEOroundtable23, contact Mark Dolinski at mdolinski@greaterreading.org or call 610.898.8386 for more information.

Upcoming event

Join GRCA for Essentials of Effective Leadership from 8:30 to 11:30am, Feb. 22, March 1, 8, 15 and 22. This fivesession training will teach the effective leader’s model of humility, intention, accountability and integrity.

The Girls Hair Studio

What makes The Girls Hair Studio special? You might say it’s their work with hair coloring, but you’d also be correct if you said it’s the atmosphere and the bond the girls share. It’s been a year since Amanda DeMatteo, Amanda Stubenrauch, Joella Balestrieri, Sam Forster and Mindy Burgess decided to start a business together, doing what they love with the people they love. Though The Girls Studio just celebrated its 1-year anniversary, the girls themselves are life-long besties. They explain, “Seriously! We’ve all known each other and have been a part of each other’s lives for more than 15 years! We’ve watched each other get married, have babies, lose loved ones and everything in-between. It makes working together easy—and FUN!—and we would literally be lost without one another.” Throughout the years, the girls worked together at different establishments before taking on this joint venture. In their first year with The Girls Studio, they’ve been busy, working 15+ weddings and building a waiting list for their services. They hope to inspire other hairstylists out there and say they are truly living by those wise words, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life!”

Baja Beach Tanning Club

Experience a total body escape. In 2023, it’s time to invest in yourself. Begin with Baja.

The Beach just got even more relaxing. Baja started off the new year committing to their clients’ health and wellness by adding Cocoon Wellness Pods to locations in Sinking Spring, Laureldale and Mt. Penn, and including them in their Diamond All Inclusive Membership.

What’s a Cocoon Wellness Pod? The Cocoon Wellness Pod is a dry heat infrared sauna that

offers massage while burning calories. Destress after a long day or jump in post workout to enhance your results! The spa-like experience is complete with circulating Himalayan salt and essential oils. Guests can enjoy up to 30 minutes or jump in for a 10-minute power nap — the choice is yours!

“Our mission is that every client leaves our salons feeling better than when they walked in. We were trying to figure out how we could

give that feeling to more people and it hit us — we already had a Cocoon Wellness Pod at our Wyomissing salon location — we needed to get more machines, promote the benefits, and add it to our Diamond All Inclusive Membership so everyone can have access. Now all four salons have a Cocoon. This is something that offers so many health and wellness benefits, and I’m so excited to be promoting this in Berks County.”

Are you missing something in your workout

routine? Do you need a short break that will leave you feeling revived and rejuvenated? Need to detox or reset? Begin with Baja!

“In a world that is so dark, we want to bring the sunshine. We want to be the place where you are able to escape and feel uplifted. Mental health is so important and we see the value in the environment and services that we provide for our clients. These wellness Cocoons are a perfect fit because it’s something everyone can benefit from. Infrared saunas have been shown to help with weight loss, detoxification, muscle recovery, chronic pain relief, fatigue, seasonal affective disorder, high blood pressure, collagen production and much more. The list of potential benefits is really endless.”

An anchor is something physical in your environment that will remind you of your why, your motivating factor.

“We wanted these rooms to be different. We needed to create an escape while also keeping it Baja, and I knew exactly who could execute my vision perfectly.”

Mallory Deck and Bridget Holleran Coe have been best friends for more than 15 years. Mallory has a love for design and enjoys creating spaces based off her visions and the client’s “anchors” — their why!

“When I was designing these spaces, I tried to immediately figure out Bridget’s why. I knew these rooms needed to become a rejuvenating haven for all guests, while also incorporating the existing and unique aspects of each Baja salon,” says Mallory.

Baja Beach has intentions of continuing to expand its wellness offerings in the future.

“Our Diamond All Inclusive Membership now includes all levels of UV tanning, LED Light Therapy Facial Skin Rejuvenation, Red Light Therapy beds, Mystic Spray Tanning, and now Cocoon Wellness Pods. I love how these Cocoons are going to help people look and feel better — that’s what it’s all about for me.”

So whether you need a short escape, a chance to enhance to your overall well-being, or a start to your summer glow… Begin with Baja!

PK Benefits Consulting

Women are the glue t hat holds our families, our workplaces and our communities together!

Power Kunkle Benefits Consulting Group (PK) is a proud supporter of Berks County’s Women in Business! At PK, we recognize the crucial role women play as they shoulder more responsibility now in and outside the home than ever before. Women need more support in nurturing themselves as deeply as they nurture their families and communities. It is our mission to champion one another individually, while also recognizing the unique power, energy and impact

we as women have when we band together as a team! Together, we can accomplish so much, and even have a little fun along the way!

This February, we wish to remind our friends, family and colleagues about Women’s Heart Disease. The 2023 National Wear Red Day will be observed on Friday, Feb. 3. Every year, the first Friday of February has been dedicated to National Wear Red Day as an awareness day for American women to understand their number one health threat—heart disease. The day encourages women to know their blood pressure, HDL cholesterol and

total cholesterol levels, as well as their body mass index (BMI) to better understand their health risk for heart disease. Heart disease claims the life of 1 in 3 women — more than all forms of cancer combined. It’s no longer just about wearing red; it’s no longer just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about all women making a commitment to stand together with Go Red and taking charge of our own heart health as well as the health of those we can’t bear to live without. Please join the ladies of PK in spreading the word and wear your boldest red to help raise awareness.

Wondering where to start your home search? How can I list my most valued possession (my home)? What exactly IS my home’s value? How do I make my home stand out from others on the market? How do I know when to accept an offer? Why do I need a mortgage pre-approval? What happens at a home inspection and final walk-through? What do I need at closing? Rest assured, all these questions and more are normal and Berks native Kelly Spayd, a licensed Realtor with Keller Williams Platinum Realty in Wyomissing, has your back.

With more than 17 years in the business, she is dedicated to each and every client. Asserts Kelly, “I strive for 110 percent customer service at all times.”

As a leader in the Berks real estate industry as of December 2022, she closed 100 units with a volume of $36.3 million. She gives this advice to those who see SOLD in their future, “For buyers, make a list of must-haves and a list of wants to help narrow the search. For sellers, it is key to make your home the most memorable to buyers by decluttering and having your property in pristine condition.”

Beverly has been in business since 2009, working from home, selling at craft shows and wholesale, and taking website orders. She opened the physical shop in February 2016, celebrating her 7th year at Muddy Creek Soap Company’s location. When you walk through Muddy Creek’s door you will be in heaven, surrounded with wonderful aromas. The adorable boutique has handmade soaps, shower steamers, herbal bug away, bath bombs, body butters, sugar scrubs, Honeybee Gardens Cosmetics, E-Cloth, shower gels, foaming hand soap and pet products! Beverly and her employees take pride in helping customers find perfect gifts for everyone and specialize in creating custom gift baskets for every occasion.

AAA travel agents can arrange cruises, tours, vacation packages, hotel accommodations and special excursions. They work with members to find special fares, packages and extras such as upgrades, vouchers, gifts and credits.

In fact, millennials are just as likely as baby boomers to say they are planning to use a travel agent for a trip in the next 12 months.

Despite continual advances in technology that allow travelers to plan and book vacations for themselves online, nearly half of Americans feel that working with a travel agent adds value to their trip. LOVE YOUR HOME FROM A TO Z

The thought of a porch swing invites feelings of relaxation. Take this to heart and create the outdoor sitting space of your dreams and get the most out of warm weather months.

Q. QUIET SPACE.

This could be your bedroom, or even your bathroom or a sunroom. Invest in a spot where you can retreat at home and where all the touches are meant to encourage relaxing and unwinding.

U.UNIQUE PIECES.

Do you have drawings from a child that are cherished? Old family photos you need to frame and hang? Treasures you picked up while traveling? Make them centerpieces in your home and show them off.

V.

VELVET.

There’s no better material to add if you’re looking for a lush, romantic touch. Consider it for curtains, pillows, or even on your sofa.

W.WINDOWS.

New windows can be an expensive investment, but when they’re airtight and properly installed they can enhance your home’s look and help with heating and cooling efforts.

X.XYSTUS.

What is it? By definition, it’s a garden walk surrounded by trees. If you love a lush landscape, consider meeting with an area professional to see how he or she can help transform your outdoor space.

Y.

“YEAR OF.”

Every year, PANTONE announces its popular Color the Year. If it’s one that appeals to you, consider purchasing accents for your home in the shade. This year, the shade is Viva Magenta.

Z. ZONES.

If you’re a fan of dedicated spaces versus an open concept area at home, consider adopting zones for each room that are conducive to organizing and performing that room’s functions.

Treasure Hunting

INSIDE THE CENTRE PARK ARTIFACTS BANK

It’s deep winter. It’s cold. Snow and ice are seemingly always lurking. Weeks will pass until the first signs of green shoots proclaim the advent of spring.

Likely, there’s some place you’d rather be. But if you’re not looking to a jaunt that will take you somewhere far flung and warm, you might want to consider a time-travel experience right in the heart of Berks County. Not time travel in the literal sense, but rather in an a more objective manner. You can be surrounded by objects that began their existence and use in a different era, often a prior century or two, but whose

the 700 block of N. Fifth Street in Reading’s Centre Park Historic District and walk through the doors of the Centre Park Artifacts Bank. You’ll find yourself enveloped in objects of other eras.

A Bank of Surprises

What’s there may surprise you. Indeed, even those the behind the “bank” continue to find unique objects that pique their interest as well as buyers locally and from a variety of states.

Primarily, the bank’s inventory consists of salvaged architectural elements — doors, windows, period woodwork, gates, mantels, cornels, columns. There are also light fixtures from chandeliers to globes, sinks and bathtubs, and hardware. Much was salvaged by Centre Park volunteers from properties set for demolition through agreements with the City of Reading and County of Berks and their designated contractors.

“We have three different ways of acquiring items,” says Michael Lauter, executive director of the Centre Park Historic District. “We go into the properties prior to demolition, receive donations, or get items on consignment.”

Hardware is a top category for donations — locks, door plates, doorknobs, hinges. Actual doors come in second, he says. Indeed, for many years the bank had so many doors in inventory, there would be $5 door sales to calve the supply. Now those semi-annual sales feature a percentage off of selected doors.

Rescued Treasures from the Ruins

O. Christopher Miller, a long-time Centre Park resident, property owner, and now the locale’s City Council representative, was a member of that salvage crew for many years.

“One of the biggest (salvages) was when (the former) Community General Hospital took down the buildings on the northeast corner of Sixth and Walnut,” he says. “There were two on Sixth and three on Walnut.”

Other memorable salvages were the sites of the former Farr’s,

Whitner’s, Pomeroy’s and Luden’s buildings, he says.

Discovered in the bowels of the old Farr’s building on Penn Street (a structure with 18th century residential roots) was a large, “very early” copper and wood with wood frame bathtub.

“It was very rustic and very rough,” Miller says. “I can’t imagine taking a bath in it.”

But it caught someone’s eye and was sold in short order.

The cavernous Whitner’s building produced a number of items, including rolls of wrapping

paper stocked in the defunct department store’s basement — and the signage on the building itself.

“That alone was a very big salvage,” recalls Miller. “That (the Whitner’s name) was about 20 feet long and the letters were five or six feet tall. A guy in Mohnton bought the whole thing.”

The classic signage from Farr’s was also salvaged and sold by the artifacts bank. Miller has the letters spelling “Men’s” and the writer of this article has one of the large “Rs” displayed in her home.

Among the most unusual items Miller helped salvage were the elevator dials from the old Pomeroy’s store at Sixth and Penn.

Luden’s yielded slabs of pink marble and marble-topped furnishings. A three-foot piece of pink marble serves as a cheese board in Miller’s home.

More of the city’s history was uncovered when the crew rescued old N. Ninth Street Christmas decorations — red cellophane hoops with stars in the center — from a property being razed on the northeast corner of Ninth and Court streets.

Loyal Customers

Miller has been not just a salvager but also a steady customer of the artifacts bank. As he and his spouse acquire and restore old Reading properties, primarily in and around Centre Park, they have purchased doors, cabinets,

The many annual events sponsored by the now four-decade-old district attract hundreds from near and far who value the beauty of the neighborhood and its exquisite architecture highlighting the Victorian, Edwardian and arts-and-crafts styles of the mid- to late-19 th and early 20 th centuries. Chief among them are the holiday house tour and garden tour. The district headquarters, which houses the artifacts bank, is always a part of the tours.

Jeffry Rhoads of Pike Township decided to take the garden tour 10 years ago. The owner of Rhoads Antiques, he found himself enamored of the neighborhood and stunned by the artifacts bank inventory. He quickly transitioned from a visitor and buyer to a devoted and dependable volunteer.

Rhoads and his wife reside in a circa 1765 farmhouse,

once a tannery, on the outskirts of Lobachsville.

A student of the Pennsylvania German culture, he gives talks on local redware. He has conducted his business primarily at show for the past 30 years and via eBay and online sales. An avid collector, he is now focusing on the works of Berks County artists.

“Truth be told, I think I buy more than I sell,” he laughs.

The objects that caught Rhoads’ eye at the artifacts bank were many. One consigned piece in particular — which he did not acquire — remains memorable. It was harvested from an ancient farmhouse set to be demolished.

“This was the most unusual thing in my tenure or experience here,” he says. “We received a late 18th century fireplace enclosure complete with the mantel, the mantel surround with its doors, and the lintel, a structural component. It included the hand-hewn oak beam to be mounted into a stone wall and even included the hinges for the cooking crane. For someone with a walk-in fireplace with the right dimensions, it was a once-in-a-lifetime deal. It even had the original

Doors in Spirited Places

Among the items Rhoads has acquired are doors. And he has repurposed them in ways that are pragmatic and inspirational.

“I did two major projects,” he says.

One is a wine cellar constructed with period moldings and doors in his basement.

The other, in his summer kitchen, is a bar created from ladder doors salvaged from an early Berks farmhouse. With laying the doors on their sides, the horizontal panels turned vertical. The end posts are old porch rafters. The bar has a cherry top purchased elsewhere.

“It conveys the old look which I’m very pleased with,” he says.

Rhoads also purchased a number of old windows and assembled them into a room divider separating the couple’s family room and bar into definitive spaces.

All three men agree doors and other architectural elements at the artifacts bank play key roles in historical architectural authenticity in the city – and beyond.

The City Weighs In

Amy Johnson, the city’s historic preservation specialist, concurs.

“The Artifacts Bank is a wonderful resource for the citizens of Reading that own property in and outside of the city’s historic districts, and that are trying to make historically appropriate renovations in order to restore their homes,” she says. “For work that falls outside of the Historic District Ordinance regulations, I often recommend that a property owner donate an item that they no longer plan on using to the Artifacts Bank with the hope that it can be used in another property owner’s restoration project.”

The doors, moldings, window frames, mantels, stair rails, spindles and other architectural objects in stock also have two other things going for them: low pricing and the fact they are crafted out of old-growth wood. That wood is the product of century-old-plus forests. It is far denser and far more durable than more modern objects made from trees specifically designed for rapid growth with a far less dense fiber which opens itself to instability, even decay.

The pricing is based on an “as-is” policy. Both Lauter and Rhoads note that the bank has neither the experts nor funding to professionally refinish damaged items. Hence, a stained-glass window with a broken piece will be priced far lower than

its perfect condition counterpart in an antiques store.

Lauter says one regular customer is a respected antiques dealer in York. He purchases items that he knows will have willing buyers when restored. As he does his own work, he justifiably reaps the pecuniary benefits.

“Because we are a nonprofit, our prices are cheaper,” Rhoads says, “so it makes sense that a for-profit entity sells things at higher prices.”

Factoring in Sustainability

Bethany Ayers Fisher, the city’s sustainability manager, is also a big fan of the artifacts bank and its purpose.

“In waste management, we often talk about the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle,” she says. “This doesn’t just apply to our household trash and our blue-bin curbside recycling programs. One of our largest waste streams is C&D, construction and demolition waste.”

The city’s cost of dealing with illegal dumping is in the millions of dollars. If people were more aware of reuse facilities like the artifacts bank, that might mitigate some of the problem, she believes.

She also cites the compatibility and durability of objects with the city housing stock.

LIVING IN STYLE

" These items are usually of much higher quality than is available today, and were, in many cases, locally manufactured.

“In older neighborhoods, reusing home hardware, structural items and furnishings is often the best way to make repairs and updates,” she says. “These items are usually of much higher quality than is available today, and were, in many cases, locally manufactured. Since they were made for our homes, you might be able to find the same door knobs, windows or cabinet hardware that matches the rest of your home. You may be able to find the same style of fencing to replace a section instead of replacing the whole fence.”

And, for Ayers Fisher, it also comes down to being a good citizen of the environment.

“Reusing home hardware, furnishings and structural items reduces the amount of trash in the landfills, reduces the

impacts of mining and smelting on our environment, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from these processes,” she says. “You also don’t have to worry about disposing of all of the packaging when purchasing salvaged or used items!”

In addition to the architectural elements, the bank offers dishware, local history books, decorative objects, home furnishings (upholstered items not accepted), lamps and even some intriguing knick-knacks. Lauter is the contact person for those interested in consigning such pieces.

Roots for Rooting

The artifacts bank, which Miller notes got its start with the Callowhill Citizens Association in the late 1970s, has been located in Centre Park since a former resident, Bob Large, suggested the group find a home within the district when its original home, a former riverfront factory building, changed hands.

Its Centre Park home was in the basement of a property on the 600 block of N. Third then owned by Andy and Vicki D’Angelo. “It was a challenge getting 12-foot doors down there,” Miller recalls.

As the collection grew, so did the need for a bigger space. That led to renting space from photographer Tom Weigand at 705-707 N. Fifth St. The artifacts bank and the district’s headquarters and community space are at that site today as the property was acquired by the district in March 2005.

The building has become a gathering place for many folks in the district who volunteer for events, the artifacts bank and community improvement efforts. While a love of history is the unifier,

there is also a sense of humor in the comradery. For in the search for historical objects, some unusual items can emerge.

Perhaps the two most unique are toilets commissioned for the late notorious Reading gangster and beer baron Max Hassel for his Hampden Heights home. The kidney bean-shaped yellow toilets were manufactured to his specifications but fatal bullets were delivered to Hassel’s head before the toilets made it to his home.

The toilets can go for the great price of $350. Well, maybe not so great as they’ve been fairly long-term occupants at the bank.

“We all think there’s someone out there who’ll want them,” says Lauter with a wink.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH

So FRESH in West Reading

Quesadilla Benedict

Roasted short rib, cheddar quesadilla topped with hollandaise, and house-made mild pepper sauce.

With a clear-eyed, curated focus on creating new, gorgeous, imaginative breakfasts and deliciously healthy luncheons, FRESH Restaurant in West Reading promises all the pleasure one hopes for in a meal, with zero guilt.

Among the breakfast offerings are burritos, avocado toast and an avocado bowl featuring two poached eggs on multigrain toast with avocado, tomatoes and feta. And then there are the benedicts…

“Benedict” Means Blessed and Good — Really Good Owner Nick Kaltsas’ Eggs Benedicts — all served with two poached eggs and seasoned potatoes (and grilled vegetables by request) — are clear winners, with three varieties to choose from. The Classic is made with shaved Canadian ham on a grilled English muffin and a perfectly silky, lightly tangy hollandaise sauce, while the Garden Benedict presents the eggs atop portobello mushrooms enhanced with sauteed spinach and tomatoes, Mediterranean-style — for the whole nutritional picture: protein, vitamins and minerals.

Meat lovers must take aim at the Short Rib Quesadilla Benedict, which is a hearty breakfast totally worth writing home about. The flavorful mixes of meaty, pulled pieces of roasted short rib melding with two folded, Cheddarcheesy quesadilla triangles, are deepened with the egg white and yolk plus hollandaise, lovingly emboldened by a mild pepper sauce. It’s that total combination of soft and chewy textures,

Apple Pie Pancakes

sweet and aromatic, plus Chef’s incredible seasonings throughout that make this plate outstanding. There’s enough to take some home for dinner as well.

While hash browns are standard fare in Berks County, Kaltsas’ style of cooking makes these bite-sized potatoes positively addictive. For all the subtle spices one detects, it’s somewhat surprising to hear Chef Nick assert, “I keep everything very simple.” He adds, “The potato seasoning is salt, pepper, oregano and rosemary.” Indeed, the influence of the family’s Greek ancestry is apparent in much of FRESH’s dishes, with devotion especially to leafy herbs from a well-variegated garden.

Choosing the proper drinks to accompany omelets, pancakes and skillet dishes is made easy, with steaming hot coffee and many choices of teas, both caffeinated and herbal. Or, for a brunch treat, the day might well call for a Bloody Mary or Mimosa, hand-crafted at the full bar, to enjoy.

Hmmm… Apple Pie Pancakes? Or Brisket

Corned Beef Skillet?

Feeling torn between sweet and savory? That’s an entirely normal reaction for Fresh customers. Pancakes listed under “Sweet Eats” include plain, Blueberry or Chocolate Chip, plus a unique Apple Pie option covered with warmed apple compote and crumbly pie topping. An enticing Cinnamon Crunch French Toast comes drizzled gently with sweet vanilla.

Fresh skillet entrées with eggs pull ingredients together in three different ways. Sunrise presents roasted butternut squash, spinach and mushrooms, while the Brisket Corned Beef includes sauteed onions, eggs and hollandaise. The Loaded Skillet contains everything from ham and sausage to Swiss cheese, peppers, onions and sriracha sauce.

Beautiful Bowls

Bowls are all the rage, yes, but few can match the flavor and satisfaction the way FRESH does. The Shrimp and Grits Bowl appeals to anyone with a hankering for Southern-inspired cuisine. But one bowl is already on the “favorites” list with Berks Countians: “Try the Chicken Grain Bowl!” urges the owner. “It’s very popular as a lunch dish.” Wow. It’s a no-brainer to see why. Eating this entrée automatically makes one feel happy and healthy with every forkful.

First of all, it’s almost too pretty to eat. Attentively prepared quinoa with char-roasted corn lies beneath tender, aligned slices of grilled chicken; nestled nearby are freshly sliced, buttery-soft

avocado (generously portioned!), thin rounds of feisty, red-skinned radishes and chopped tomatoes. The juicy, crunchy textures seem to ping around in the mouth thanks to their masterful treatment of garden herbs by the Chef; in fact, those seasonings completely seal the deal for an utterly memorable taste experience.

Two suggestions: Try a hot cup of Lemon-Ginger tea with this bowl, which — if you choose — can be delivered along with a small cup of golden honey and a plate of juicy lemon slivers. This tea has just the right rejuvenating-yet-warming effect. Also, for a side dish, do order the House Made Tortilla Chips with pico de gallo. These gorgeously crunchy (yet just-chewy) chips are lip-smacking good, ranking high on the chart of “best tortilla chips anywhere.”

Smash Burgers & Roasted Reubens

Naturally, FRESH’s sandwich list includes a super-hamburger — the Smash Burger, created for folks who adore grilled onions and bacon jam. For good measure, FRESH then takes liberties with the traditional Reuben, inviting diners to try their specialty Roasted Reuben. Here, brisket corned beef plays a starring role, enhanced by sauerkraut and Swiss cheese.

On any given day, Nick Kaltsas’ mother (Victoria) and father (Christos), might be on deck, smoothly tending to everyone’s needs. Victoria Kaltsas is quick to assure her excitement about the restaurant’s cuisine: “Everything is fresh,” she says, smiling. “We even make our pickles fresh.”
