Get your Chili for a Good Cause
Mark Feb. 12 – the day before that big football day – on your calendar. That’s when you’ll want to be sure to head to a participating Berks County location (namely, your local Redner’s) for an award-winning bowl of chili cooked up by Chef Tim Twiford for a good cause. The 7th Annual Chef Tim’s “Take the Chill Off” presented by Redner’s Markets helps to raise money for Berks nonprofit Blankets of Hope. All of the proceeds aid in the mission of providing new fleece blankets and twin beds to those in need locally because as Blankets of Hope founder Marc Goldstein asserts, “Every person deserves to feel secure, to be warm and to have hope!” For more information on how to pre-order, for your nearest location and more, visit on Facebook at @BlanketsofHopeBerks or online at blanketsofhopepa.org. – NIKKI M. Houseplant Lovers Unite
Have an affinity for greenery? If your home is adorned with houseplants, there’s a local club for you: Riverview Gardens & Gifts Houseplant Club. The group got its start as the nation’s interest in such plants began to grow. Says Alaina Salks of Riverview, “Many people are filling their apartments and homes to the brim with houseplants and with this growing interest comes a need for accurate information and guidance on how to care for these plants. We created the Houseplant Club out of that need.” Houseplants are said to offer an array of benefits like mood-boosting, lowering stress and anxiety, improved air quality and humidity and more. Anyone interested in learning more can join. The group usually meets at Riverview the first Sunday of the month at 1pm. There’s even a Facebook Group to join. Members decide on the agenda for each meeting and on what topics to explore. Want to learn more? Visit gardensandgifts.com or call the Temple business at 610.929.5049. – NIKKI M. MURRY

A Purposeful Valentine’s Day Craft
You can create cards, mini pictures, hanging ornaments or whatever your creative side wants to design. These make great gifts for book lovers, teachers or that someone special in your life.
PHOTOS AND CRAFT BY DENISE HASSON, THE REPURPOSED PAGE
W
hat happens when a book is overloved and begins to fall apart? If it’s too far gone to pass on to someone and yet too hard to throw away, you can give it new life! For all the book lovers out there, here’s the perfect repurposed Valentine’s Day craft.
MAKING A 3D BOOK PAGE HEART Materials Needed: • • • • • • • •
5-10 old book pages (a thicker page works best but any can be used) a heart-shaped tracing piece (use an old folder or yardstick mailer since we are repurposing) pencil colored markers rubber cement glue varied background papers, cards, mini frames or other objects scissors stapler
Directions:
Gather cut out
Fold in half and
hearts (6-8)
staple at crease
Glue top piece
Color the
together to hide staple
edges
1. Make a stack of book pages. 2. Draw as many hearts that fit on the top page. 3. Cut out the hearts (because you stacked the pages you now will have 5 or more hearts for each cut). 4. Stack the cut hearts to your desire (6-8 works nicely for a small heart). 5. Fold stack in half, then open and staple together on the crease. 6. Glue the top heart sides together to cover the staple. 7. Color the edges with desired marker color. 8. Glue the back heart to whatever surface you are using.
ABOUT DENISE As a retired librarian, I created The Repurposed Page. I wanted to turn over-loved books into something else that could be loved again. Most of my work is drawing directly on the book page, but I discovered I had so many smaller pieces left over. I began making 3D shapes for all the various holidays as a way to use every piece of the book pages. It’s a fun, fast and easy craft to do with your friends and family. My art can be found on The Repurposed Page on Facebook and Instagram and also at therepurposedpage.com. I also have my art at The Mint Leaf in Leesport. Email therepurposedpage@gmail.com if you are interested in any piece on my page or in custom orders.

AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT KU Presents! celebrated its 30th anniversary shortly after you came on board. How did you contribute to that celebration? As part of the celebration, I wanted to honor the program’s strength, history and subscriber base. I did this through the creation of a documentary about the program. I learned so much about KU Presents! when creating that documentary, and the process strengthened my bond with the program and the community. Can you tell me about the Kutztown University Arts Society and the P.L.A.Y. initiative? At the time of the 30th anniversary celebration, we formed the Kutztown University Arts Society, a group of on- and off-campus community members to foster the arts at the University. This included KU Presents! The Society’s “Promoting the Love of Arts in Youth” (P.L.A.Y.) initiative allows KU Presents! to bring local students to campus for performances. We hope to continue with this initiative after the pandemic.
IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH
Bryan Zellmer Director, KU Presents!
BY CHRISTINA J. STEFFY | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS
Bryan Zellmer has more than 20 years of experience in the arts. He began as a performer and then held various management, production and marketing roles before joining KU Presents!, a program that brings world-class performing arts to Kutztown University and the surrounding community. You’ve performed at prestigious venues across the country and won numerous awards. Why did you take this role with the KU Presents! program? Prior to working with KU Presents!, I was working with an arts program at a college in New Jersey. When the program closed, I took an arts job in Colorado, but my family stayed here. I was commuting back and forth to see them. When the KU Presents! opportunity opened up, I knew it was a perfect fit because I would be home with my family, and I would be working with a college arts program. I missed working with students and seeing the spark when they get to do what they love and perform.
10
FEBRUARY 2022 | berkscountyliving.com
How did KU Presents! navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and its return to live performances? We shut down live performances from March 2020 through summer 2021 and shifted gears to focus on our music majors. These students have to perform for an audience as part of their course requirements, so we live streamed their solo performances. This allowed a worldwide audience to watch them perform. In the spring 2021 semester, I also hosted a weekly talk show with arts colleagues so our community could engage with these professionals. In fall 2021, we moved back to live performances with fewer, smaller-scale events. KU Presents! keeps you busy, but how do you relax when you have free time? My wife is in the arts, and my four children are involved in the arts in school. We’re very busy, but our downtimes align well. We enjoy family time doing things like traveling, playing video games and hiking.

Timi Bauscher Owner/CEO The Nesting Box Market & Creamery
New challenges of managing a home full of babies and farm life forced Timi Bauscher to leave her 15-year dental career. In 2016, she became a farmer, founder and CEO of The Nesting Box, LLC after purchasing 550 laying hens to market farm fresh brown eggs to the local community and restaurants. Her small retail farm stand quickly developed into a fully staffed, larger farm store in 2018. Along with the expansion she began fashioning artisan ice cream derived from a locally sourced dairy base. Knowing the flavors and textures she wanted to achieve, she created exclusive recipes now carried at local ice cream parlors and restaurants. For 2022, her sights are set on more parlors offering Nesting Box ice cream, along with a mobile ice cream unit for weddings.

Owner, The Cherry on Top
Upon moving to Exeter Township in 2014, Ann Marie Lander knew she wanted to make an impact on her community. After launching two successful small businesses, she decided to embark on an adventure serving one of the most favored desserts: ice cream! The Cherry on Top opened in the fall of 2019, kicking off at the Exeter Township Harvest Day. Over the past two years, Ann Marie’s dessert truck has been invited to serve at birthday parties, fundraisers, showers, school functions, corporate events and weddings…pretty much anywhere ice cream is desired. Towards the end of 2020, Ann Marie purchased a commercial lot in Exeter Township off of Shelbourne Road, where she has parked The Cherry on Top dessert truck and opens it to the public when she’s not serving at private parties. Ann Marie hopes that throughout 2022, other food trucks and small businesses will join her on her property in a joint effort to bring together community members and to offer something different and fun to her township. The truck schedule can be found on the website, as well as on social media.

BY MARIAN FRANC ES W OLBERS
For oldtimers, newcomers and all those who left Berks County borders to travel the world, serve Uncle Sam or take a job, only to return and settle back down, the answer to “why Berks?” is a no-brainer: this place delivers tangible access to foods and drinks that are tasty, art that inspires and daytrips that fulfill a natural need for historical grounding.

FOR
Foodies Face it: Berks County is Food Country. Here are three destinations to not miss.
For an old-fashioned bakery with all kinds of sugary delights, Dutch-Maid continues its triedand-true traditions, making coconut cakes and wedding cakes, apple fritters, donut holes and classic “baby cookies.” The latter are shaped like people; they’re never overly sweet, are perfectly baked (they never fall apart when you bite off a piece) and are thicker than many other bakery versions of this goody, which appeals to young and old alike. Dutch-Maid’s signature donuts, doughy and satisfying, are called “cherry tops” with a delectable white vanilla frosting. Just one warning: they sell out fast! And what about those amazing Lenten fastnachts? Ash Wednesday is March 2 this year, which means everyone will crave fastnachts starting in February to kick off the prelude to Easter. Dutch-Maid uses the same delicious recipe every year, with just the right time in the oven for these yummily browned treats.
Fast and furious. Working at a New York City pace and churning out the most authentic bagels in a 100-plus-mile radius, New York Bagelry delivers utterly fresh, well-textured, flavorful bagels and cream cheeses — starting early in the morning and well into the afternoons. They’ve got all the classics you’d find in the “bagel states” (like New Jersey and New York) — plain, sesame, poppyseed, egg, cinnamonraisin, pumpernickel and an over-the-top “everything” bagel, where the bottom half is just as tasty and onion-garlicky as the top. And they creatively throw in holiday specialties, so expect the unexpected! The egg and bacon breakfast sandwich on any bagel with coffee (from regular to blueberry) is a hearty, popular choice. For two distinctly amazing flavor combos, try the Black Russian with olive cream cheese (savory green olives thickly chopped in) and the SunDried Tomato bagel topped with vegetable cream cheese (made with celery, peppers, onions and carrots) or their NY-deli-style egg salad.

THE WINDSOR INN AT SHILLINGTON
Writer-photographer Anthony Maize loves fine wine and dining, and once he found The Windsor Inn, he became a regular patron. “The first thing I love about the Windsor is that it is very cozy,” says Maize. “The architecture, with its tall windows and dark woodwork, dates from an era when builders were craftsmen who took pride in their work.” And the food, he says, is outstanding. “My favorite dishes are Chicken Parmesan, the handmade burgers, and a dish called Pappardelle diAngelo which includes sirloin tips in a sauce that makes you never want to leave. As for the Chicken Parm, the chicken breast is plump and perfectly cooked through, but still moist. The sauce is freshly made on site and deliciously seasoned. Perhaps the best thing about this dish is the pasta, also made on site.” Salad ingredients are hand-picked by owner-chef Gina Hurwitz, whose lively dressings include a tomato gorgonzola vinaigrette where “the tang of the vinaigrette and gorgonzola is moderated by just a hint of sweetness.” Gloria Flynn, another Windsor fan, believes, “It’s all in the way the chef seasons the food. I had swordfish in a light white wine broth with capers. Mine came with a side of roasted vegetables. Both were out of this world. Again, it’s the tasty blend of seasoning. I’ve had roasted vegetables many times before, and this was just different enough to taste special. I like that we are never rushed there, so that we can enjoy our lengthy conversation while eating delectable food.” 38 W. History A rich history manifests itself in too many directions to count. The bucket list for lovers of history includes everything that’s obvious — Berks History Center Museum and Henry Janssen Library in Reading and the Conrad Weiser Homestead in Womelsdorf — and not-so-obvious — the fertile fields in Oley’s lush valley, named by the Lenni Lenape. Here are more ways to indulge in the past.
THE JOHN UPDIKE CHILDHOOD HOME
“The John Updike Childhood Home preserves the history and tells the story of John Updike’s relationship with Shillington,” says Maria Lester, Ph.D. She’s the Director of Education for this newly opened (2021) historical landmark and a scholar with whom the famous author corresponded. “There is something for everyone in the house,” says Lester. “There are treasures that range in topic from his fame to his high school days to family and literary pieces.” As you walk through the house, you can imagine him hiding beneath the dining room table as a boy and immediately sense the author’s life as a boy growing up in Berks.

A PATH LESS TRAVELED
History Professor John Pankratz of Albright College finds pleasure in historical canal walks with his wife, artist Cocol Bernal. He explains, “Berks County, as did many American communities in the early 19th century, pursued infrastructure projects — ‘internal improvements’ they were called — designed to make landscapes and water courses just a bit more useable, to facilitate the movement of crops and coal to market, to create from oneway rivers a two-way route. The best local examples of these improvements are the series of dams, canals and locks that tame and graduate the flow as the Tulpehocken and Schuylkill pour downstream through Reading and on to Philadelphia.” He adds, “Throughout this long and lingering pandemic, and particularly during its early lockdown phase, as Cocol and I sought the safety and reassurance of fresh air, we didn’t seek to scale nearby pinnacles but instead gravitated to the nearly level surfaces of former towpaths along the Union Canal Trail. Easily walkable in segments or in one large gulp, as variable in different seasons and lights as the façade of Rouen Cathedral, what’s left of the Canal persists as ruins, incongruous blocks of a giant’s granite Lego set, or else has settled back into overgrowth along the river banks. There’s a lesson in that decay. Even granite doesn’t last forever, at least not as usable transportation technology. For those not already humbled by the pandemic itself, a walk along the former canal cultivates a seemly humility in the face of Nature’s law of averages.” Union Canal Towpath Trail co.berks.pa.us/Dept/Parks/ Pages/default.aspx

READING AREA FIREFIGHTERS MUSEUM
Kyle Vonderlinden, a probation firefighter at Amity Fire Company, recently visited the Firefighters Museum, reflecting, “It’s an astonishing place to explore.” Richard Boyer, a volunteer there, explained to him: “This building, where this Museum is located, was the home of the Liberty Fire Co. Number 5, and the first fire company station was built on this plot of land in 1854.” Housed within the Museum is the stunning John Wanamakerdesigned “best room.” “They have some magnificent pieces from the firefighters’ past,” says Vonderlinden, “such as the first-ever steam engine that was made and put into service. They also have this cool alarm box that they used back in the day, which alerted the fire company that there was a fire.” Says Boyer, “The alarm box was run by wet cell batteries, and wires ran throughout the cities.” This alarm box sent out a code to tell what street of the city was on fire.” 501 S. 5th St., Reading 484.525.0590 readingareafirefightersmuseum. com

STUDIO B ART GALLERY
Studio B, located in historic Boyertown, is the home of the Arts and Activities Alliance, a committee of Building a Better Boyertown. Community Relations Director Jane Stahl explains, “Folks tell us that they feel welcome and supported at Studio B: the little gallery that does! We are eager to take opportunities to promote our artist members however we can — through social media, onthe-road exhibits, our members’ pages on our website, Facebook LIVE recordings, podcast episodes and award ceremonies that introduce them, their work, passions and studio spaces to the general community. We believe that when folks get to know one another, they support one another. And we are eager to support one another’s art and self-expression. We want our artists to feel special and appreciated from the moment they walk in our door. We want them to feel the love!” Author John Yamrus is one of many fans: “Every time I’m at Studio B, I’m blown away not only by the fabulous art, but also by the welcoming environment Jane has made. As for the art... Jane shows impeccable taste in what she hangs and shows, and having a piece of art in your home, art that speaks to you and that you love, art that changes and grows along with you — it just adds so much to your life and your world. You can’t put a price tag on something like that!” 39A E. Philadelphia Avenue Boyertown | studiobbb.org
GOGGLEWORKS CENTER FOR THE ARTS ART PLUS GALLERY
A nonprofit artists cooperative since 1999, Arts Plus Gallery is surrounded (up and down the street, a great place to stroll) by dozens of shops and restaurants, craft beer makers and coffeeshops, and this small but powerful space continues to surprise and delight. Here is a place to enjoy and purchase collectible works by dedicated artists such as Russell Slocum and Helen Reinhold. 604 Penn Avenue West Reading 610.375.9122 artplusgallerypa.com
In 2005, this compelling arts center showed the community what could become of a former goggles-making factory. Because it is such a dynamic venue, GoggleWorks deserves several trips a year on the part of anyone who adores art. Showcasing just one studio is proof positive. Kachina Leigh Studio 313 is an adventurous and eloquent place to visit, as this artist explores fiber and found objects in profound ways. According to Leigh, “Having a studio at the GoggleWorks was a goal for years. I co-owned a small shop in Reading years ago and thought that the downtime would provide an opportunity for me to do some of my own work. I quickly learned that there is never downtime with your own business. From there, I had a home studio, which was lovely; however, I missed interacting with people and really hated having to travel to show my work. The GoggleWorks is the perfect mix of private and public.” She explains: “When I need to focus, I pull my door shut. However, most times and with most of the artists, the door is open, and I have such interesting conversations with people… My space very much reflects my aesthetic, with a mix of vintage clothing and fabrics, along with found objects and curios. Mixed in are my pieces, both wearable works that reflect my interest in shibori and other fiber techniques along with my collage, encaustic and sculptural work.” Kachina Leigh - GoggleWorks Center for the Arts | goggleworks.org

Paint!
How it Can Create a Total Transformation BY H E AT H E R BAV E R
Paint is the original superhero. Whether it’s an artistic decorative finish, a captivating mural or one breathtaking color, paint can make a room or a piece of furniture look completely different. We tapped into some local expertise and artistry to discover how the power of paint can rock your world.
Set Yourself Up for Success.
Before you dive into a painting project, make a plan and consult a knowledgeable resource. “Our team has years of painting experience and is happy to assist with any paint questions you may have,” says Chad Newcomer, Assistant General Manager at Grauer’s Paint & Decorating. Different types and brands of paint are formulated for different goals. “The paint that would be used to paint ceilings is different from the paint used to paint trim,” says Newcomer. Also, consider how much shine, or sheen, you’d like. “Typical preferences are flat for ceilings, eggshell for walls and semigloss for trim work.” Since paint comes in every color of the rainbow and all shades in between, “We always recommend visiting one of our showrooms to look at color samples

in person versus choosing a color off of a picture or computer screen since they can distort the color,” says Newcomer. After you’ve decided, consider doing a test to make sure the color is a good fit. Grauer’s offers pint-sized samples for testing the color on your wall. Check out the color in daylight and with the lights turned on. “Lighting is one of the biggest factors to take into account when choosing a color.” After you’ve found your perfect choice, the amount of paint you need depends “on the size of the room and the quality of the product chosen,” says Newcomer. “A higher quality product will cover the walls in less coats and last longer, which saves money and time in the long run. A gallon typically covers 350-400 square feet of wall space per coat.” You can keep any extra paint for future touchups. If you do need more, “Grauer’s is always happy to mix more paint later.”
Besides paint, the right tools will make the job easier and prevent last-minute store trips. Newcomer recommends, “a roller, roller frame, extension pole, drop cloths, tape, spackling to fill holes, caulk for various cracks and a paint tray.” Not every tool is needed for every project. When in doubt, consult the experts. Before you open that beautiful, fresh can of paint, get your room ready. “Prep work is key and assists in providing flawless results,” says Newcomer. “A light sand is typically recommended. For major color changes, a primer may be required.” Drop cloths on furniture and carpeting will guard against spills and make for easier clean-up. To transform your room into a masterpiece, seek out the wisdom of seasoned pros. “Our team has years of experience and is willing to assist you with tips and tricks to give outstanding results. Oftentimes the right products with the right tools will go a long way.”
Go For a Big Finish.
Making a person’s house into a home, says Cathy Chervanick, “is about what they want to feel when they walk through the door.” For designs from bold and bright to calming, muted colors, Chervanick’s “number one inspiration for either scenario is nature; whether it be sand or snow, forests or canyons, mountains or sky and sea.” For more than 30 years, Chervanick has worked as a decorative painter. Now retired from custom wall finishes, she creates commissioned art pieces. Chervanick also shares her knowledge and skill by offering design consultations for people to do their own custom finishes. “I favor decorative painting techniques that are subtle and add depth to the room,” says Chervanick. Her goal is for the “room to be enhanced, not overwhelmed, by the technique.” To add some glamour and sparkle to two different powder rooms, Chervanick used bold decorative plasters. Then she incorporated stencils enhanced with Swarovski Crystals to twinkle and catch the light. When considering a special finish, look up. “One of the most forgotten parts of a room is the ceiling, also known as the fifth wall,” says Chervanick. “I loved doing ceilings, especially dining room ceilings as the chandelier lights focus on an otherwise plain surface.” To begin, Chervanick recommends starting with “a good basecoat in a satin finish from your local paint store.” With so many different decorative finishes, the step-by-step process varies widely, but they have a common beginning. “They all start with good surface preparation. I like using Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore paints that have a builtin primer with a satin finish.” For decorative paints, “Modern Masters Paint has a line of decorative paint products and is available locally at Grauer’s Paint Store,” says Chervanick. Modern Masters’ website is filled with tutorials and inspiration. Chervanick’s favorite decorative painting technique is “a parchment look on the walls
Turn a Wall Into Art. As a full-time mural painter, Carrie Kingsbury transforms residential and commercial spaces. As the owner of Promiseland Murals LLC, she has created a stunning array of nature scenes, portraits and historic vignettes. Kingsbury listens to her clients’ vision to create the mural of their dreams. “My art history background really comes in handy when working with customers, and it’s a great way to find out what their tastes are,” she says. Kingsbury works with homeowners “to find out what they would love in a mural, their preferred color palette, what fabrics, furnishings and the design style they have in their home.” For projects commissioned by a town, she delves into its past. “I find inspiration from the history and special features of a town and enjoy working with the local historians,” she says. The end result may be big, but Kingsbury’s murals start small. “I come up with a rough sketch for approval, and then I move on to a color rendering. To avoid complicated math, I do my sketches in an inch-to-foot ratio.” After the project’s approved, Kingsbury paints with Nova Color from California. She says, “It’s specifically designed for mural.” She also uses Benjamin Moore Exterior for outdoor works. Kingsbury’s subjects vary widely, and each mural creates a sense of magic. In homes, she has painted underwater worlds and jungle paradises. She’s brought fairytale castles and nursery rhymes to life. Trains, trucks and spaceships in brilliant detail become part of a bedroom. For a small mural, like a nursery accent wall, Kingsbury spends one day painting. Larger projects may require months of work. For a mural in Berwyn, PA, Kingsbury painted “36 lifesize photo realistic portraits and a realistic American flag that was 15-feet high by 60-feet wide.” The finished projects are preserved with a protective clear coat. Different projects present unique challenges, and Kingsbury embraces the opportunity to expand her artistic skills. Her most memorable project, at Covered Bridge Park in Allentown, “was one of the hardest but I was the most proud when I was done.” This walking bridge mural included the parachute cloth mural technique. Pioneered by Philadelphia Mural Arts, this technique involves painting on cloth. “I didn’t realize how hard it would be, because one of the walls was circular. There was a lot of sweat and a little bit of bickering, but we made it through, and it turned out great!” Kingsbury says. After the hard work is completed, it’s time for a celebration. Besides unveiling the mural art, dedication events let Kingsbury experience the emotional impact of her work. “I’ve gotten many tears from expectant mothers. I once walked through an elementary school cafeteria and got a standing ovation from the little ones.” berkscountyliving.com | FEBRUARY 2022

with very little color contrast and subtle movement.” The end result looks just like parchment paper. During retirement, Chervanick’s enthusiasm for painting has moved in new directions. “My passion for color, creativity and discovery has never waned, and it has led me to my current hobby of playing in paints, various mediums and plasters on large canvas and wood panels.” One of her recent pieces, My View, depicts dawn at the Red Bridge on the Gring’s Mill Trail. “The love of my life, my husband of 48 years, Tom, sadly passed away two weeks after it was hung in our home. My View was his favorite. We frequently spent time at the Union Canal Trail at the Berks Heritage Center walking and biking and shared many fond memories there.”
Give Old Furniture a Fresh Outlook.
Paint has an amazing ability to give furniture a style makeover. “Painting tends to hide imperfections well and give the piece a new life,” says Jen Follweiler, owner of Unique Timber. When selecting furniture for painting, “We look for a solid piece that is less than perfect.” Not all older furniture should be painted, and it’s important to know the difference. “If it’s an antique and in good condition, we will not paint,” advises Follweiler. Before the project begins, it’s time for a moment of reflection. “I try to take in the piece for a moment and be realistic about the potential for it.” Follweiler takes her inspiration from the furniture, letting it be her guide. “The pieces that have been well used over the years and have several imperfections are usually best as a rustic refinish. Those that are in better condition can have a smoother, more modern finish.” Next, Follweiler cleans and preps the piece. She makes any needed repairs, sands the surface, and sometimes uses primer. Different paints are needed to achieve different looks. “Chalk paints can tend to give a more rustic textured look, while other mineral-based paints can provide a more polished look.”

Follweiler will also re-stain furniture as well. For a finishing touch, she uses waxes, polycrylic, acrylic and polyurethane to protect surfaces. Whether rustic or modern, Follweiler’s goal is to create pieces that will last. “We believe in finishing solid pieces that can be well loved and enjoyed by our clients.” Over the years, this family-owned business has revitalized tables, vanities, dressers and all kinds of cabinets. Follweiler admits to having “a soft spot” for antique Hoosier cabinets. These cabinets were a popular kitchen workstation 100 years ago, and feature top and bottom storage, built-in equipment like a flour sifter/bin and a work surface in between. “We have had the pleasure of restoring four Hoosiers in recent years. Each one is unique and has so much history.” Unique Timber does custom refinishing and creates pieces for sale. For custom pieces, Follweiler collaborates with clients and witnesses their reaction to her work. “Most rewarding is when we have had the honor to refinish pieces that have been in a client’s family for generations. Several have been emotional when they see the end result. No words for the happy tears.”

DINING OUT
HIGH HEAT, GREAT EATS AT
Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza BY M A RIA N FRANC ES W OLBERS | PHOTOS BY HEID I REU TER
It
starts with an amazing oven — a 900-degree one! That’s where hot magic happens at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza restaurant. General Manager Dustin Hammer, a top-notch chef in his own right, works with Chef Dave to make “pizza night” a truly delicious experience. “The oven is coal-fired 365 days a year,” Hammer explains. “We keep it going. It never goes out.” Laughing, he adds, “Even on Christmas we come over and keep it going.” With good reason: There’s nothing quite like pizza and breads made in a well-tended oven of this type. That high, even heat produces a crisp, edgy crust that’s charred to perfection, lending Italian foods a just-seared, coal-fired flavor that can’t be matched by other means. The restaurant offers a full-service bar (with beer on tap), salad, wings, meatballs and other appetizer options (often served with focaccia), numerous pizza varieties, sandwiches and cheesecake for dessert. Couples out on a date night will find the atmosphere

upbeat and polished, yet casual. For a group of friends, family or business associates, there are heavenly pizza options to please every palate, from Traditional with favorite toppings, to Specialty Pizzas, including a yummy round White Pizza (ricotta, mozzarella and fresh-grated Romano cheeses), a crazily meat-loaded Carnivori — a square creation carrying the whole band: tiny meatballs, thick pepperoni rounds, Italian sausage and smoky bacon.
Start with Anthony’s Classic Italian Salad and Wings
The salad! How can a straightforward Italian-style bowl of greens and other goodies be this good? This popular course is beautifully presented with bite-sized, juicy crunches of Romaine lettuce, chickpeas, small wedges of hard-boiled egg, purple salad-onion slices, glorious olives and — if you ask for it — rich Gorgonzola cheese chunks. Positively addictive. So healthy, too.
Clearly, the dressing plays a key role in this salad’s success, as it’s not overly acidic, not overwhelmingly herby, enjoyably tasty yet precisely humble enough for diners to taste each individual salad element. Four types of wings take the edge off while you’re awaiting the starring pizza to arrive: One features caramelized onions, in a rather unusual take on wings. Here, charred edges mingle with tender chicken and sugary roasted onions to yield a uniquely memorable taste. The Dry-Rub No. 2 wings, served with a side of focaccia, are entirely different: again, they’re charred just right on the outside, while the chicken meat is moist inside, but this time, the experience features a tantalizing myriad of Italian spices. These wings are sporting more lovely herbal notes than the tongue can dream up. First you detect thyme. Yummm. The next bite — wait — is that rosemary? Marjoram? Total taste fun.
Red Sauce Winners
Maria’s Meatballs with Ricotta is an excellent starter dish, though admittedly, some folks might find that large meatball so darned filling they may not be able to handle more than two slices of pizza! “Our meatballs are hand-rolled with care,” assures Hammer with his typical culinary confidence, and he confirms that they’re bathed well in his homemade, just marvelous, basil-tomato sauce “with simple ingredients” that’s sweet, savory and oh-sotomato-y. A dollop of cool ricotta and large sprig of basil bolster the flavor of this tightly textured, beefy meatball. Hammer’s newcomer to the menu is Rigatoni Pasta, made with that same, fulfilling tomato sauce. Served al dente with a side of oven-baked focaccia, these “rigs” are large pasta tubes enveloped in sauce and draped with clingy cheese, a triumph of Italian textures and tastes in every bite.
From the Specialty Pizza Coal-Lection
Each of Anthony’s pizzas possesses its own perky personality. Here are just a few of the most enticing... The Square Margherita: focusing on fresh mozzarella and Italian plum tomato sauce, plus grated Romano, basil, spread across flavorfully baked crispy-chewy crust. Roasted Cauliflower: a to-die-for invention, featuring oven-darkened, golden browned bits and small florets from the cauliflower plant (one of the healthiest crucifers on the planet, btw) prepared in olive oil and fresh garlic, with a cheesy finish of mozzarella and Romano and breadcrumbs. Unforgettable. Pauli’s Pizza: Italian sausage, baby meatballs made in-house (of course), hot or sweet peppers, plus ricotta. So well-focused, so savory.

MVP in the Veggie Category: Eggplant Marino
Important to highlight for all those eggplant fans out there! There are two standouts that make it completely worthwhile to head to Wyomissing: Eggplant Marino and the Eggplant Marino Pizza (basically, a spinoff of the appetizer). Served as a starter, the eggplant itself is super-thinly sliced and very lightly breaded, so diners gain a whole new eggplant-appreciation sensation in each forkful. Do scoop up rich plum tomato sauce, then lop off a fresh basil leaf, and plop all of this into your mouth, letting flavors explode. NFL Hall of Fame legend Dan Marino, a partner with the business, inspired the eggplant dish, and a percentage of proceeds benefit the Dan Marino Foundation, providing programs for young people with autism and developmental disabilities. berkscountyliving.com | FEBRUARY 2022
