February is the famed month of love, and this month’s issue celebrates just that. Love comes in many forms as it’s absolutely individual. Be it love for your family, pets, friends, home or a hobby, what YOU love is unique to you. Those who know me best know that my top loves include my family (for which I completely count my pets!), rhinos and hippos, traveling, baseball and music. Oh, and warm weather. Being that it’s almost constantly cold this time of year, I’m planning to lean on those loves to warm my heart and make my soul happy. Speaking of matters of the heart, this month’s features include a local Valentine’s Day Date Night Guide for sports, arts and romance enthusiasts on page 35 as well as a round-up of foodie items of which nearly everyone is a fan: coffee and baked goods. In early September 2023, Berks County welcomed its first CommunityAid store. CommunityAid is a faith-based thrift and donation store that supports more than 500 nonprofits across Pennsylvania. The money earned through sales at CommunityAid benefits the nonprofits that, in turn, help you and your neighbors. It is also an affordable and sustainable way to shop. “It’s not like shopping at major retailers,” says Matthew Healy, Director of Marketing. “We truly believe in giving back. When you shop with us, the money will go further to help someone else.” As a faith-based store, CommunityAid is devoted to its mission to help and serve the people of Pennsylvania. CHOCOLATE + WINE IS MIGHTY FINE
BY SARAH MIES Chocolate and wine, can you think of a better combination? Take a weekend off and indulge in an event for enthusiasts of both right here in Berks. The businesses that are part of the Berks County Wine Trail are hosting another year of their Chocolate & Wine Pairing Weekends. This two-week-long event focuses on the sweeter things in life just in time for Valentine’s Day. Take the time to wander from winery to winery at your own pace while tasting delicious local wines and decadent chocolates.

Who is it for?
Event weekends fall on February 10 and 11 as well as February 17 and 18, purposely before and just after Valentine’s Day. All 11 Berks County Wine Trail locations will be participating. Wineries include: Bouchette Vineyards in Bethel, Blue Mountain Winery in New Tripoli, Deerfoot Winery in Shoemakersville, Kog Hill Winery in Morgantown, Lily's Vineyards and Winery in Reading, Long Trout Winery in Auburn, Manatawny Creek Winery in Douglassville, Ridgewood Winery in Birdsboro, Setter Ridge Winery in Kutztown, Stonekeep Meadery and Wine Cellars in Fleetwood and Stoudt’s Winery in Shartlesville. Be sure to check out the individual wineries for their hours of operation. This is a self-guided tour, so plan out your weekend in advance to get the most out of the experience. Further information about each winery is available at berkscountywinetrail.com.
Each winery will offer a different pairing. There will be a wide variety of combinations to enjoy. Customers will see a mix of both sweet and dry wines, and the chocolate treats provided can range from brownies to chocolate-covered pretzels to fudge. “I always try to provide a nice mix of milk and dark chocolate,” says Sheree Krasley, co-owner of Stonekeep Meadery and Wine Cellars. “This way, no matter what you like, there is something for you.” Wineries may announce their pairings prior to the event, or you may be surprised when you get there! “Don’t be afraid to speak up if there is something else you want,” Krasley advises. “All wineries have both sweet and dry wines.” So, whether your taste buds are craving something sweeter or if you want a dryer sip, options abound.
Individuals aged 21 and older are welcome to participate in this event. In the past, the event has drawn a large variety of demographics, and all are welcome. Grab your significant other, a group of girlfriends, your mom or anyone else you know that may love it and bring them along on these weekends to remember! Larger groups may want to call ahead to the wineries to make sure they can accommodate everyone at their intended time of visit.

Caroline Hill originally pursued a career in pharmaceutical sales and even had a personal training stint. Her fitness lifestyle and sales mindset remained intact when she moved to Berks County, making her fit for the jewelry industry when she started working for the established store often mistaken for a chain in 1993.

However, we have items that are $100 and $200 and we can meet most budgets. We’re also a small team. Other than my jeweler, there are three full-time and two parttime employees.
Q:
What advice would you give to someone buying jewelry as gift?
You really have to know the person you're buying for and what their likes and dislikes are: what metal they like, yellow gold or white gold, diamonds or gemstones, etc. It helps to pay attention to what your loved one wears and to complement what they already have. Make sure to ask about product care. We can pretty much make anything, so bring us pictures and we'll design anything you want.

How did your role evolve over time?
Initially, I started out part-time in payroll. Then, one day I started sorting diamonds to help with a project and I thought to myself, “Oh, this is awesome.” After that, I started taking courses online at the Gemological Institute of America. You can also study on campus, but I chose to do the online courses because it was easier than moving to California. It began with learning about diamonds, then gemstones and then completing the full gemology program. My roles kept growing and since I became the sole owner in 2015, I do whatever needs to be done 10

such as making marketing and management decisions and waiting on our customers.
Q:
What is your favorite part about your role?
I have a deep passion for the jewelry industry, and what I particularly enjoy is the continuous learning it offers. My pursuit involves constantly seeking out new and captivating merchandise. While the core of my business centers around timeless classics and engagement rings, I take great delight in catering to my loyal customers by discovering pieces I know will resonate with them.
Q:
What is something people may not expect about Van Scoy?
We sell a lot of jewelry that's very sustainable and teach customers about product care when they make a purchase. In addition, we also have jewelry available at
Outside of continuing education in the jewelry industry, what are your hobbies?
Fitness is my livelihood. I used to be a personal trainer before owning the business. I was a runner for a while, but running took a toll on my body. I have pretty much biked all my life, so transitioning back to biking has been so much fun. I’ve been doing a lot of travel biking. Thirty-two of us went on a biking trip from Prague to Vienna. Last year, we biked in Croatia and we’re talking about possibly doing Greece next year. I do ride by myself sometimes, but 80 percent of my riding is in groups where we all are friends and enjoy the sport.

Throughout the last four decades, Prospectus Berco has made it its mission to not only see the dignity in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities but also to help them create and choose a meaningful life. From its roots as an early provider of disability services in the late ’70s to its current position as a leading provider and innovator in its field, Prospectus Berco’s story is a testament to the power of possibility and magic of little moments. Let’s take a peek inside. Founded in 1977 by Joseph (Joe) Gousie and James Arnold as an offshoot of the Berks County Chapter of
the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC), Prospectus Berco has been at the vanguard of the disability rights movement for more than 45 years. In the 1970s, the nation was grappling with political, cultural and social movements — including a movement for the support and acceptance of individuals with disabilities. Against this backdrop of challenge and change, Prospectus Berco was founded to help formalize and solidify desperately needed change and support for individuals with disabilities. Just two years prior to the birth of Prospectus Berco, President Gerald Ford had signed into law the Education for All Handicapped

Children Act (Public Law 94-142), guaranteeing a free, appropriate public education to each child with a disability across the nation. This was a crucial step in securing rights for individuals with disabilities and paved the way for a new cultural appreciation for the community. From its modest beginnings, Prospectus Berco embraced a vision that centered on the abilities of individuals rather than their limitations. The name itself reflects this ethos, with "prospectus" signifying the belief in uncovering potential in any situation (a word Joe found by paging through a dictionary in 1977) and "Berco" representing its Berks County roots. The organization grew steadily throughout the years, with programming and initiatives that sprawled into neighboring counties and attracted the attention of local and national advocacy groups.
Today, Prospectus Berco's impact on Berks County is profound. The organization is a powerful force for good, employing more than 240 dedicated professionals and serving 275 adults through a range of programs and services. When Ann Marie Lander moved to Exeter Township in 2013, she knew she wanted to make a positive impact in her community. Having already launched two successful small businesses, she decided to start one dedicated to a popular dessert — ice cream! The Cherry on Top, Ann Marie’s dessert truck, debuted at the Exeter Township Harvest Day in the fall of 2019. Over the past four years, it has made stops at a variety of events, including birthday parties, fundraisers, showers, school functions, corporate events, weddings and anywhere else ice cream is desired. In 2020, Ann Marie purchased a commercial lot in Exeter Township near Shelbourne Road where she parks The Cherry on Top and opens to the public alongside other food trucks. As she enters the fifth year of running her business, Ann Marie hopes to expand outside of Berks County. Her goal for the Shelbourne property is to bring community members together and offer something unique and fun to her township. It’s February in the Northeast, which means short days and a lack of outdoor activities until the spring thaw. But the persistent chill isn’t the only thing in the air; love is there as well. Falling squarely in the middle of the month, Valentine’s Day is the most popular, yet obvious, date night of the year. Bookending that day in February are equally date-worthy afternoons and evenings for lovers looking to enjoy Berks County’s ever-growing options while waiting for the growing season to return. With that in mind, here are some suggested date night itineraries for arts enthusiasts, sports fans and romantics.

Arts Enthusiasts: Home Is Where the Art Is Dean’s Way West Reading Mural Walk
Few people have been more synonymous with revitalization in Berks County than the late Dean Rohrbach. Serving as West Reading Elm Street Manager from 2007-2018, Rohrbach saw public art as a key tool in his revitalization arsenal, and he wanted local
students to be involved in it. At the time, Michael L. Miller was an art educator at Wyomissing High School. Also inspired by public murals, he found a kindred spirit in Rohrbach. In 2010, the first group of public murals debuted on Kline Street, running between Second and Third avenues. The success of that inspired another batch on Cherry Street between Fourth and Seventh avenues. “In about five years we put together close to 30 murals on that threeblock corridor,” Miller says.
The arts are thriving in Berks, nowhere more so than West Reading and the first few adjacent blocks of downtown Reading. This date night itinerary encompasses outdoor public art, an indoor collection and some hands-on fun. Some pieces were collaboratively made by the students and community groups. Others were made by individual artists. Each piece has a nameplate that identifies the artist(s) and a QR code allowing viewers to learn more about the pieces and see photographs of the works being made. There is no particular order in which to view the works, says Miller, who teaches art and art history at Albright College while continuing to coordinate public art projects. 201 Washington St., Reading Housed in the former Willson Goggle Factory building that inspired its name, GoggleWorks is nearing 20 years of “transforming lives through unique interactions with art.” During a visit to the sprawling complex, you could stroll through several exhibition galleries, view an independent film at the Boscov Film Theatre, watch studio artists in action in their rented spaces on the second and third floors and purchase handcrafted works made on the premises or in the region at the New Store. You could even try your hands at some classes and workshops — if you want to take your date to the next level by recreating the pottery scene from Ghost during a ceramics workshop, nothing is stopping you. Well, other than the instructor, probably.
Reading Public Museum 500 Museum Rd., West Reading Founded in 1904, and in its current location for nearly 100 years, this landmark offers a healthy mix of permanent and temporary exhibits. Its campus also includes a 25-acre Arboretum, the Neag Planetarium and a sculpture garden. According to Scott Schweigert, the museum’s curator of art and civilization, the top permanent pieces to view in the museum include The Laundress by Edgar Degas, The Balloon by Julien Dupré and Man Reading by American artist John Singer Sargent. And don’t miss the Keith Haring pieces and the Ptolemaic-period Egyptian mummy Nefrina, which includes a hologram telling her story. Temporary exhibits available for viewing this month include Nature All Around Us, which focuses on ecosystems in our own backyards, and Danny Lyon: Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement, a traveling photography exhibit. Schweigert suggests budgeting a few hours for a visit with some additional time for a romantic stroll if the weather is nice. “Generally, our visitors can explore the main museum in an hour or two, but try to leave time for a walk through the Arboretum paths — beautiful in all four seasons,” Schweigert says.

The Art Room Fittingly, The Art Room opened on Valentine’s Day in 2021. Feeling that Penn Avenue was missing a place where people could express themselves while performing an activity, owner Brian Adams decided to create the room where it happens. The shop offers ceramic painting, glass painting, wood and canvas painting and pottery wheels. It also hosts birthday parties, bachelorette parties, baby showers, team-building exercises and much more. “I handmake 80 percent of the pieces on our shelves,” Adams says. You and your significant other can select a pair of those plain ceramic figurines, set up at a table in the shop — food and drinks are allowed (it's BYOB) — and spend an hour or two painting them. Adams will then bake the figurines, and within a week the shiny creations can be picked up. He says the most popular items with couples are mugs and planters, each of which comes with an added benefit. “With a mug purchase you receive a hot cocoa packet,” he says, “and with a planter you receive a complimentary plant.”

Ice Skating at Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex Couples holding hands while ice skating happens so often in movies, especially those of the Hallmark Christmas variety, that it has become cliché. But it’s still a solid date-night option, especially for the athletically inclined. And it’s one that happens often this time of year at Body Zone. “In the colder months, we see lots of couples coming in,” says Christine M. Kolva, Body Zone’s director of marketing and communications. “It’s so cute.” Body Zone offers 90-minute public ice skating sessions on Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons and evenings and Sunday afternoons. The $15 fee includes rental skates regardless of if they are needed. If you want to get some practice time in so you don’t wipe out too often on your big night out, “we have a huge learn-to-skate program,” Kolva says. After some active time on the ice, take a seat and watch the professionals in action. Nearing their 25-year anniversary, the Reading Royals have three home weekend games in February from which you can choose, but the ECHL contest against the Adirondack Thunder on Saturday, Feb. 3, is special. The Pink in the Rink/Women in Sports Night returns for an evening of giveaways and feel-good moments for good causes. Yes, the ice will be pink, a labor-intensive process that takes six team members up to 12 hours to complete according to Tammy Dahms, vice president of corporate partnerships for the Reading Royals and Santander Arena. “We first painted the ice pink in 2006 to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Support Services,” Dahms says. “Since then, the partnership with the Reading Royals and BCSS has raised more than $145,000 to work for their mission towards supporting all those affected by breast cancer in our community.” During the game’s first intermission, breast cancer survivors will take charity shots and receive on-ice recognition. The Women in Sports component has grown to feature panels including reps from all over southeastern Pennsylvania. This year’s group will include Dahms; Kiernan Melograna, head athletic trainer for Wilson High School; and Catherine Wiese, head field hockey coach for Albright College. Dahms urges you to arrive early to walk the concourse. Family patriarch Rodolfo Folino purchased more than 50 acres of land off Route 78 after the turn of the millennium on which to build homes. Delays due to regulations eventually shelved the project, and the idea for a winery/restaurant was devised by Rodolfo’s son Marco and daughter-in-law Andrea. It was a natural fit after the family accrued decades of experience in the industry with Valentino’s Restaurant in Kutztown. Opening its doors in 2015, Folino Estate gives patrons a taste of the family’s Italian roots. It’s impossible to miss the inspiration in its spacious greeting area, modeled after an Italian piazza complete with a water fountain. Start your date with some wine tastings; reservations are recommended on the weekends. Folino produces nearly a dozen varieties each of red and white wines along with a few rosés, sangria and sparkling varieties. If you’re interested in lunch or dinner while you’re there, Folino’s restaurant offers an Italian-heavy menu, including brick-oven pizza. It’s perfect for date night, a best friends get-together or dining out before or after concerts at the Santander Performing Arts Center or events at the Santander Arena. But it’s an any-evening haven too, consistently imbued with warmth and a food hug. After a long day at work, especially on a bitter mid-winter day, don’t be surprised if you find your mind dreaming about dipping into a steaming bowl of Judy’s famed, elegant Butternut Squash Soup. in color, exuding that enticing scent… it literally tastes cozy! And that’s only the beginning. It’s best to go here when hungry since you’ll want to enjoy several courses. While seated in a delightful booth with adorable lamps and crafted lampshades next to original works of colorful art on the wall, you’ll soon find the server gently setting a basket of just-warmed house-made focaccia bread before you. It’s crusty and creamy-doughy with hints of rosemary — fabulous as is or happily enhanced with dipping oil. Fine wines and all sorts of drinks and unique cocktails abound,
including a very smooth yet robust Black Manhattan. Small plates from crispy fried artichoke hearts to skilletroasted Italian meatballs deliver gourmet-prepared goodies that tease and please the palate, although the specialty hearth-fired pizzas may also serve as either an appetizer or full meal, depending on individual preference (and appetite). Unmatched in ingenuity is Judy’s stunning Exotic Mushroom Pizza with a tasty, thin crust. It features such gloriously distinct flavors as porcini, shiitake (aka the steak of mushrooms) and oyster mushrooms, made sweet with
caramelized onions, cheesy with fontina and mellow with a divine truffle oil. It’s superb. Yes, you can make a meal of this one. However, another favorite among diners is the Housemade Italian Sausage Pizza. Mmm. This one might even rob you and your table of conversation as you bite into that finely savory sausage married with sundried tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, roasted garlic, mozzarella and Parmesan. (Surely her sausage recipe must be a closely guarded secret…)

Surf-to-turf culinary creations are manifested in such mouthwatering choices as Casuela Roast of Jersey Scallops, which bathe juicily in caramelized onions and sherry vinegar butter, and an incredibly luscious Molasses Mustard Glazed Cedar Planked Salmon. Hearth-charred edges border the lovely, tender, rich center of Judy’s wonderful Filet Mignon with Gorgonzola Butter, where the distinctive cheese imparts a milky texture tinged in lightly sharp pungency as it melts over the beef cut. Complementing this stellar steak experience are addictively prepared whipped potatoes
that stand up stiffly next to fresh veggies such as steamed broccoli or other farm-grown vegetables in season. Entrees come with a tossed green salad — elegant greens and thin-sliced purple onions — with a very tough choice of equally delectable dressings. The House Vinaigrette is so subtly tart that it seems to be giving praise to each of the different green leaves arrayed on the salad plate while the blue cheese dressing presents a remarkably eloquent, salty touch for crunchy, juicy Romaine leaves.

Gourmet offerings with a comfort feeling characterize the compelling menu on many levels. When a rich, just-zesty citrus sauce meets boneless chicken breast in Limoncello Chicken with Saffron Aïoli, multiple textures come alive thanks to a generous bed of al dente capellini noodles. The aromatic lemon basil broth is made with whole roasted garlic cloves for sweetness with chewy sundried tomatoes for a touch of tartness. A delightful choice for poultry and pasta lovers. Under “Pastas” you’ll also find a spicier Italian-leaning dish called Enraged Penne Pasta made with fresh basil, plum tomato sauce, capers and Parmesan cheese — paired with a choice of chicken or shrimp. For a top-notch vegan entrée, enjoy Roasted Acorn Squash with farro, dried cherries, spiced pecans, sweet corn and red mole. As for pleasing all those folks searching for numerous gluten-free dishes, Henry does a fantastic job combining nutritional brilliance with a capital “Y” for yummy results.
