We exist to empower you, our family of patients, by facilitating your health and well being.

If you could travel to a new, bucket list spot this summer and budget was no issue, where would you go, and what would you do? “If budget was no issue, I’d love to go a fabulous beach house in Malibu right on the water with a group of girlfriends. Think rooms for each, a rooftop deck, delicious food, flowing drinks, perfect weather and a staff to cater to our every whim.” – Robyn L. Jones, publisher “I would explore Vietnam with my husband and children. I would show them the village where I was born, my grandparents’ house and the street foods that I loved. Then we will travel to all the destination spots like Ha Long Bay and the Golden Bridge!” – Quynh Fisher, art director “I would go to Hawaii to relax on the beach and swim with the dolphins. Swimming with the dolphins is one of my main bucket list items, and to do it in Hawaii would be amazing.” – Elizabeth Beebe, account executive

“This is a tough one, but I think I’d go on a safari in South Africa and visit to help at a rhino sanctuary. I’d love to see the animals in the wild, and I have a soft spot for rhinos in particular.” – Nikki M. Murry, editor “I would go to Scotland. They say that the summer months are the best time to go. AROUND TOWN BERKS BITS

Kutztown Folk Festival Back In-Person

From Fan to Business Owner

Danielle Zeamer discovered Clean Eatz about two years as a customer. She says simply, “I got weekly meal plans and fell in love with the concept. It saved me so much time and gave me healthy and delicious meals I could eat on the go with an extremely busy lifestyle.” Now she’s brought Clean Eatz to Wyomissing. Zeamer explains that Clean Eatz is multifaceted: it’s an eat-in café with an amazing menu for everyone, including food for kids; a graband-go area with frozen meals that Zeamer likens to grocery store shopping (shop those you like and stock up); and a weekly meal plan service that changes each week and allows customers to shop online. No subscription is required. Café meal favorites include the build-a-bowl option as it’s customizable and the “Watch Your Waist Wrap.” Asserts Zeamer, “We do all the work for you so you can have more time for the things you need. We’re here to help you gain, maintain or lose weight and to create a lifestyle of clean eating.” Open daily. For more info visit cleaneatz.com. – NIKKI M. MURRY

Head to the Fairgrounds in Kutztown July 2 through 10 for the Kutztown Folk Festival, America’s Oldest Folklife Festival, as it returns to in-person status.

1Crafts. .

The festival features more than 200 of America’s finest craftsmen and folk artists, including such mediums as papercutting, pottery, metalworking, chair caning and much more.

A New, Unique Event Space Opens

Looking for an out-of-the-ordinary event space with a spectacular view? You can find it, perhaps unsurprisingly, at Berks Nature. The Rookery opened this past March and is an environmentally responsible and aesthetically respectful addition to the existing camp of The Nature Place. Set atop Berks Nature’s Preschool, the airy interior and rooftop patio can host up to 300 with a lookout over 100 acres of Angelica Creek Park. Berks Nature’s intent is to utilize The Rookery to expand its educational programming and to rent the space for additional income to support the nonprofit. Says Berks Nature President Kim Murphy, “This additional space will enable Berks Nature to significantly increase our impact in the community by helping to connect thousands of people to nature.” The Rookery addition emphasizes sustainable architecture, too. Energy efficiency is addressed by using sheep wool insulation and natural light is maximized through ample window design and placement. For more info visit berksnature.org. – NIKKI M. MURRY

Nature Appreciation at Heart of Junior Gardener Program

Are you the parent of a young nature lover? If you answered “yes,” then the Junior Gardener Adventure Program at Riverview Garden and Gifts in Temple is a must to check out. Aimed at children age 7 to 12 years and their parents, participants stop in for an adventure journal and parents sign up to receive Adventure Challenge emails. Each Friday morning a new challenge is released for parents and children to tackle. Alternately, parents can join a dedicated Facebook group for the updates. Children should document their adventures in their journals by drawing, writing, taking pictures and the like. Once four challenges have been completed, stop back in to claim an Adventure Award in the form of a sticker, pin or a prize from the prize bin. The program runs year-round and adventures are released suited to every season. Says Alaina Salks at Riverview, “One of my favorite challenges is the nature mandala. You collect objects from nature and make your own mandala from what you found.” Learn more by visiting online at gardensandgifts. com/junior-gardener-program. – NIKKI M. MURRY

There are activities galore for children, including a popular petting zoo, puppet making, story time, sing-along music and barn star drawing, just to name a sampling.

Great Eats.

Food is absolutely a festival highlight. Make room for a fullcourse Pennsylvania Dutch meal, some funnel cake, apple dumplings or corn fritters. New this year is the Fresh Fest Market with healthier offerings featuring local ingredients. Want to learn more? Visit kutztownfestival.com.

Blast Off for Independence Day

FirstEnergy Stadium will be home to not one, but two opportunities to view grand fireworks displays Independence Day weekend. On both July 2 and 3 after the 6:45pm Reading Fightins game, attendees can enjoy Mega Blast Fireworks, billed as the largest fireworks show in stadium history. For more info visit fightins.com.

AROUND TOWN

Unique Food

Speaking of food, the Nitro Bar offers plate after plate of unique, mouthwatering items to sink your teeth into. One of the top sellers is the burger. While not anything fancy or complicated, it’s the comfort food many of us love. Cocuzza says, “It’s just a down-to-earth simple bar burger.” He adds, “We also feature a modern take on the old Berks County bar and diner items.” This spin on the menu includes a Lebanon Bologna Cheesesteak, featuring a delicious hoagie roll filled with shaved Lebanon bologna, caramelized onions, cheese sauce and a few other special add-ins. Accompany this with an ice-cold Reading Premium beer. Other great options to explore include house-pickled red beet eggs, the Dutch platter, seasonal desserts like Shoofly pie, fastnachts and more. Wednesdays feature half-off wings, and Thursday sees All-You-Can-Eat Mussels.

Delicious Drinks

Quirky & Cool

Inside the Nitro Bar BY KELLY TANGER | PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE NITRO BAR

N

othing is more fun than spending time with friends and family, mixing conversation with nostalgia. Adam Cocuzza, creator and co-founder of Nitro Bar in West Reading, creatively blends a little old and a little new, while also honoring a piece of Berks County history. Built in 1913, the building at 416 Penn Avenue was once the West Reading Motor and Hardware Company, a bustling automotive dealership. Years later, it became well-known as A to Z Vacuum. Today, Cocuzza has reawakened the automotive history of the space, incorporating auto-related memorabilia throughout.

Walk Into History

Step into the Nitro Bar you’re walking into a snapshot of history. As your eyes roam the walls, you’ll discover an array of Reading automotive memorabilia. A few items to take special notice of include the photos and mural of the Reading Standard Motorcycle, which was built around the time of WWI. As you look beyond the photos to the brick walls and follow the wall up to the ceiling, both are pieces of the building’s original structure from 1913. Keeping the automotive history and the essence of Reading and Berks County on the surface, Cocuzza says, “was a way for me to capture the history of the building, capture the history of the area and keep the food very historical to Berks County.”

Every delicious meal should be paired with an equally delicious drink. Staying true to Reading-Berks roots, local beers are served, with Reading Premium always on tap. Out of the 16 taps, six are nitro taps, creating a creamy and smooth drink texture. For the cocktail lovers, you’ll find spirits handcrafted with Nitro Bar’s own mixes and simple syrups. Let your mind drift back to the Prohibition era and enjoy a classic Manhattan, a refreshing martini or choose from a number of other satisfying options. Whether sitting at the bar or gathered around a table with friends, be sure to take notice of the wooden surfaces. Both the bar and tables were handcrafted by our neighboring Lancaster Amish community, giving a true rustic look and feel. Another aspect to notice is the complete absence of televisions. Cocuzza shares, “We really want people to enjoy our company, enjoy each other’s company and have a proper experience.”

FUN FACTS Nostalgic Entertainment. Have fun playing shuffleboard, an 8-bit arcade game or pick a tune on the jukebox with at least 100 vinyl records inside. Live music is featured every Tuesday night. Environmental Commitment. In their effort to go green, no single-use plastics are used, drinks are served with paper straws, and solar panels are positioned on the roof.

AROUND TOWN IN THE LIMELIGHT You started in June 2021 when the Folk Festival was in its second virtual year due to the pandemic. What was that like? It was interesting. I started at the end of June, so the virtual Festival was almost over. But I was here in time to get our Fall Fest off the ground, and this was good practice for the larger Festival. We plan to continue Fall Fest, and we have some new things coming to the Folk Festival this year. Right now, I’m really looking forward to my first Folk Festival experience and seeing everything come together. Can you tell me more about Fall Fest and your new Festival programming? Fall Fest is a day-long event in town with various vendors, entertainers, artisans and fun and educational events. We also have a Farm-to-Table dinner in the fall, which is provided by Kutztown’s Rodale Institute. During the Folk Festival this summer, we’re adding a “home sweet homegrown” dinner on the field after the Festival closes for the day; this will be provided by Kutztown’s Hive restaurant. We’re also adding a farm fresh market on the Festival grounds to offer different types of food to attendees. What’s the farthest anyone has traveled to attend the Folk Festival? We can confirm we’ve had guests from as far away as Germany. In fact, one of our entertainers, Dr. Michael Werner, is from the part of Germany where many Pennsylvania Dutch families came from.

IN THE LIMELIGHT WITH

Heather Zimmerman Executive Director of the Kutztown Folk Festival

BY CHRISTINA J. STEFFY | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

Heather Zimmerman is still new in her executive director role with the Kutztown Folk Festival, a world-renowned event that draws 100,000 visitors over nine days. She is ready to honor this traditional celebration of PA Dutch culture while leading changes for a new generation of attendees. Why did you decide to take on this role with the Folk Festival? I grew up in Berks County, and I graduated from Kutztown University (KU), so I heard about the Festival my entire life. Although KU is right across the street from the Festival, I didn’t attend as a student, but I attended after graduation. I then worked in hotel sales and operations for 30 years, and we often partnered with the Festival in some way. When the executive director role opened up, I felt my hospitality experience prepared me for it, and I was up for a new career challenge. 10

JULY 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

It sounds like planning the Festival is a lot of work, especially since you have a small staff. How do you relax when you have some downtime? Yes, it keeps us busy. Other than myself, there are two regular staff members who work year-round. We hire additional Festival staff closer to the event. But when I get to relax, I like to spend time with family and friends, read, take walks and do home projects.

LEARN MORE. National coverage. The Kutztown Folk Festival has been covered in national news outlets like USA Today and The Washington Post. Dutch or German? “Pennsylvania Dutch” is used to refer to local Pennsylvania German heritage because, when German immigrants settled in the area, “Dutch” was a blanket term used for German citizens.

ART ORIGINALS

John Dusko:

“Color Speaks” BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS

J

ohn Dusko is legendary in his commitment to painting Berks County scenes and people. A prolific artist drawn to pastoral and urban images alike, Dusko knows that his oils, pastels and drawings stir up fond nostalgia in oldtimers who “remember when” — even younger citizens and newcomers to the Reading-Berks area become visibly moved when they experience the gentlemanly painter’s impressionistic canvases. Dusko’s artwork carries viewers on a dreamlike journey, capturing the movement of wind in trees and waterways; the energy of darkening clouds that forecast an impending storm; the palpable heat of a still, hot summer day. In all seasons, Dusko’s brushstrokes pay homage to marshes and fields, paved roads lined with trees, stone houses and faded brick-red barns. With loving care, Dusko portrays numerous industrial forces as well, such as the trains, the Reading Railroad and the laborers.

Road to Reading

“I’m originally from Pottstown. Starting when I was about 14, I was always interested in art. From Day One, I loved to draw,” he says. “I saw an article in the paper about an artist giving art lessons. My mother called…and so I’ve been painting scenes since that time. I just turned 89.” He adds, “Color speaks. I consider my work impressionistic. My instructor, George Walters,

AROUND TOWN

was a good impressionist — studied at the Academy in Philadelphia. He was so sure I had to go to the Academy — he knew some people in there — when I’d graduate from high school.” And so he went. Along came the Korean War. “I’m a veteran,” says Dusko. But after the war, “I thought, what would I do to make a living? So I went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City. I talked to one of the instructors, he gave me advice to work up a portfolio, and I took it to various ad agencies. At Beaumont Heller & Sperling, I got a job there for a number of years.” Illustration was big then. “Then American Casualty in Reading called me one day. They said, ‘We need an illustrator.’ I did go there, as they offered me more money. I was married and having children by then.” Then, “I got interested in the history of Reading. I’d go out to do paintings of Penn Street, the Reading Railroad and the Outer Station.”

Blue Marsh Calls

Of everything Dusko has painted, it’s landscapes that he loves best. “Landscape at Blue Marsh in particular,” he says. “I do a lot of things over at Blue Marsh. It’s just about the atmosphere there. It talks to me. I just find it interesting.” He confesses, “I still love pastels. I started a lot of work with pastels, but the problem with pastels is that pieces need to be framed under glass. So I got back to oils.” With his distinctive style — the essence of life — so evident, Dusko’s art represents the very persona of Berks.

REVELATIONS Dusko smiles as he shares, “My favorite artist is French — Degas.” I lived in Japan for two years, in Yokohama. I painted when I could while there, and I sold them — those Japan paintings.

Tell us about a memory with your pet that you find funny or that you hold close to your heart.

Rose went everywhere with me. She was a people magnet. Whenever we would walk into a dog-friendly store or pretty much anywhere, adults and children would be mesmerized by her size and striking black and white harlequin color. Most of the time everyone wanted to pet her. I have photos of her in stores with employees and shoppers. She would meet and greet anyone who wanted to pet her and brought smiles to everyone’s faces.

What was your pet’s favorite way to spend the day?

Just like a person would. Being hugged and loved, going in the car, shopping, taking walks on a beautiful day, making new friends, napping and snacking. She wasn’t just a dog…she was a Dane. Editor’s note: Rose has passed since her appearance in our feature. We send condolences to all who loved her. 46

S ART GoggleWorks Center for the

BY DONNA REED PHOTOS COU RTESY G OG G LEWO R KS CENTER FOR THE ARTS

For decades, lenses were sharpened in the big old brick building on the northeast corner of Second and Washington streets. Starting in the late 19th century and continuing through the 20th into the early years of the 21st, that sharpening was integral to the quality industrial safety eyewear manufactured by the Willson family. From its inception in 1871 manufacturing optical glass to its evolution into the production of products as disparate as oxygen masks to fashion sunglasses, Willson went on to eventually be acquired by Dalloz Safety. Like so many domestic manufacturers, it was ultimately shuttered. The building was vacated in the spring of 2002. But, in just three years, the oncebustling factory building took on a new identity as GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, to be recognized as one of the largest entities of its kind in the United States. Officials say it annually draws in excess of 250,000 visitors. The main movers and shakers of that rebirth were industrialist

50

JULY 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

Marlin Miller, the late businessman Irvin Cohen and the late department store magnate Albert R. Boscov, who collectively honed their vision into a dazzling reality. But, over the course of the past 17 years, the lens through which that early vision occurred had grown a bit cloudy. GoggleWorks, its name a salute to the building’s roots, became the anchor of what is known as Entertainment Square. Catacorner, the Reading Movies 11 and IMAX theatre was constructed. Just up Second Street fronting Penn, Reading Area Community College built the Miller Center for the Arts, a popular performance venue. GoggleWorks Apartments opened about a decade ago, a goal attained by Al Boscov’s tireless efforts and named for his good friend, the late state Senator Mike O’Pake. But like Mike, Al Boscov has passed. A life-sized statue in front of the parking garage that bears his name on the southeast corner, is a testimony to the bricks-and-mortar changes he brought to this busy intersection.

Overcoming Challenges

While the history is inspiring, a secure future for GoggleWorks requires an objective assessment of its operational past and present. That’s where Levi Landis comes in. It was in 2016 that Landis, then in his early 30s, was appointed executive director of GoggleWorks, succeeding venerated educator Gust Zogas, now a board member, in the position. With a younger-trending board and Landis, a new assessment of where GoggleWorks stood from both financial and programming operations occurred. According to Landis, in 2015, GoggleWorks had a more than $300,000 operations loss. The financial challenges did not occur overnight. Through its first six years, the annual costs of operations were about $6 million. During his tenure, Zogas had the Herculean task of reducing that to around $1.5 million, and still there was the loss.

S berkscountyliving.com | JULY 2022

51

LIVING IN STYLE

By the end of 2016, the institution had reached operational stability. Currently, annual operations run about $2.5 million, Landis says. Part of the operational challenges dealt with the variety of programming offered since 2005, much of it expanding over the years. “In 2017 and 2018, we revamped our programs,” he says. “We threw out the Greek diner menu and narrowed them down to relevant programs.” Landis and the board also considered the relevance of GoggleWorks to its immediate community. Looking to the influence of Readingbased artists and endeavors like the Dear RDG podcast, a successful outreach to include the urban artists occurred – and continues. In 2018, a program began to mentor career artists. Around the same time, the number of visits by Reading School District students increased. Landis recalls one especially poignant question by a young pupil, who accidentally wandered into a vacant alley from a tour. “She asked: ‘Why is there no art out here?’,” Landis recalls. “We knew she had hit on something important.”

52

JULY 2022 | berkscountyliving.com

Sweet Heroes to the Rescue Sandy Solmon, the owner and founder of Sweet Street Desserts and a board member, took that thought to heart. She agreed that GoggleWorks likely didn’t seem overly approachable to its neighbors. Citing national trends that focused on cities with placemaking and art activating public spaces, she urged the board to act. “She’s the hero of this program,” says Landis. What the “program” evolved into is a three-phase effort to create an expansive and interactive Art Park on the grounds of GoggleWorks. GoggleWorks’ interest and confidence in carrying out the project was aided by a $12-million endowment, The Fund for the Future of GoggleWorks, announced in February by board chair Tod Auman. The Windgate Foundation contributed an astonishing $8.8 million. Windgate, which supports significant educational programs in contemporary craft and visual arts, initially gave a matching grant of $1 million in 2019 after GoggleWorks co-founder Marlin Miller, executive director Levi Landis,

and board member Zogas visited the foundation at its headquarters in Little Rock, AR. “After we reported success in matching the initial grant, Windgate announced they had been watching our work, and they wanted to give an additional $7.8 million,” says Zogas. “It’s a testament to the leadership of Levi, who championed this campaign and who collaborated with his great team and our community to make GoggleWorks more impactful and sustainable.” Why would an Arkansas-based foundation be so interested in Reading’s GoggleWorks? Landis offered an explanation. “The Windgate Foundation is a major force for transforming our world through the arts,” says Landis. There is a map in their headquarters with pins in all of the places where they have supported impactful work through arts and education. It looks like a scatteredrainbow block of colors. It’s a vibrant, tangible symbol of their widespread advocacy and leadership.” Local philanthropists also stepped up to add to the endowment: Miller and his wife, Regina, donated $1 million;

the Neag Foundation awarded a $500,000 grant; Pam and Peter Barbey contributed $500,000 through the Edwin Barbey Charitable Trust; and Zogas contributed $260,000 in the wake of the campaign kick-off contribution in that same amount by Dena and Victor Hammel. Shirley Boscov, sister-in-law of GoggleWorks co-founder Albert Boscov, pledged $50,000 to the fund. The funding allows GoggleWorks to sustain and maintain its current footprint but also showed leaders they could expand their mission outside of its factory walls.

Park it! The groundwork for the outdoor art park – and GoggleWorks outreach to its neighbors – was set by getting the pulse of the neighbors. A grant from the Berks County Community Foundation enabled the hiring of a bilingual consultant who, along with staff members, canvassed the neighborhood. They learned pretty much the obvious – many in the neighborhood were struggling to make ends meet and to care for their families. Visiting and getting involved in a nearby arts center was not a priority. Add to that another factor: for those undocumented, entering an established institution was taking a chance on being discovered. At the same time, the Wyomissing Foundation created a GoggleWorks “U” task force, concentrating on getting feedback and suggestions

from Sixth Ward business folks and residents who live in the “U” off Lauer’s Park bordered by N. Second, N. Third and Walnut streets. The majority of respondents were supportive of GoggleWorks and asked for more outdoor, community activities including performing (dance, theatre) arts, as well as farm and/or food markets. “Pretty much, they favored events where food and art can converge,” Landis says. “If art is about engaging the senses, how do we use food, which engages all five senses, music, and other programs as incentives to merge with art?” The answer came with the concept of the “Art Park.” And it was not limited to just the grounds of GoggleWorks. An active garden plot adjacent to Lauer’s Park Elementary School and long used as a learning site, was renamed GoggleWorks Gardens. Its goal: to use art to grow an appreciation for local food systems, learn farm skills and enjoy time with neighbors. Tiana Lopez, garden studio manager, leads that urban gardening effort. At GoggleWorks itself, the expansion effort is designed to increase the amount of programming and green space.

GoggleWorks Art Park

“This area is closest to our building so we want to make it secure and mission-focused as well as attractive,” he says. The estimated $500,000 project would create a much greener (grass, plantings) courtyard and alleyway where “pop-up” exhibits and performances, especially those highlighting emerging artists, and other events could happen. While the hope is to complete this in 2022, Covid-impacted supply chain issues and inflation have been unexpected and unwelcome challenges. “Last year, our outdoor events attracted 20,000,” says Landis. A clear benefit is that neighbors can see the activity and join in, providing a great mix of locals and those traveling to the events from outside the city borders. Phase Two is set to be a “creative commons.” Though Landis says it is premature to place an exact timeline or price tag on the endeavor, he did note the cost may exceed $7 million. ambitious project may involve installing outdoor sculptures, constructing an amphitheater and designing a mini golf course, the latter which was a popular suggestion in community responses. Construction would center in what is now the gravel parking lot/entrance off the 100 block of N. Third Street. The amphitheater, he says, would have a retail facing…not a blank wall fronting the street.

The Alley (1b)

Community the Priority “This is key to community interaction with the arts,” says Landis. “We can envision a series of free concerts.” The mini-golf would attract families to enjoy time together and become simultaneously exposed to the arts. “If we can nail that part – highlighting sculpture with mini golf and marry programs of music and performance, that would be so great,” he says. Phase Three would require the most critical public partner buy-in. This phase fronts Washington Street and involves a re-configured southern approach/entrance to GoggleWorks. It calls for designated and safer bicycle and pedestrian access as well as a geographical and cultural connection to the new United Way of Berks County and Centro Hispano headquarters in the Albert Boscov Plaza parking garage on the southeast corner of Second and Washington streets. Because Washington Street is a state road, any reconfiguration of traffic patterns must garner its approval. Hoped-for improvements include some on-street parking and other traffic-calming. The call for on-street parking along Washington Street is also being sought by local entrepreneurs who have or will be re-developing buildings from the 600 block westward. In addition, a part of this phase involves an homage to Reading’s storied railroad history. There are still railroad tracks on GoggleWorks property that served the campus’ manufacturing predecessors, both Willson Safety Products and Stelwagon. Landis says one idea is to place a train car of some vintage which can be displayed as an art gallery and accessed by visitors. Landis says “it’s way too early to budget” the cost of this final phase or to offer a project timeline.

Over the course of Landis’ tenure, the GoggleWorks team has also taken its show on the road. There have been more than 40 off-site visits, usually supporting established events such as West Reading’s Art on the Avenue or the nearby annual Juneteenth celebration in partnership with the NAACP. A mobile furnace enables glassblowing to be a part of these visits. The addition of an annealer or “glass cooler” will enable folks to take their creations home the same day.

25th Annual

At these events, GoggleWorks personnel have introduced a “Shatter Our Fears” endeavor. Individuals can freely write out their fears on scrolls over the course of a season and place these in an ornate glass vessel. That vessel and its contents are then destroyed by a giant “Hammer of Hope” and, in turn, another original glass piece is created. “I think of this as how we redefine our city,” says Landis. “A thing of beauty emerges from our collective fears, and we create new opportunities together.” With the planning, funding and implementation of these expansions and greening of GoggleWorks campus, the fears and concerns for its sustainability seem to be as shattered as that glass. As the institution nears its third decade, its Reading roots are only getting stronger. EDITOR’S NOTE: Donna Reed, a member of Reading City Council since 2002, has acted upon a number of legislative matters involving GoggleWorks Center for the Arts.

BERKS ORAL SURGERY Dental implants are the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures or sacrificing adjacent teeth to be used as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements placed in the jaw bone. They allow for fewer diet restrictions and restore confidence in eating, laughing and smiling. Dental implants are the most natural, stable and permanent option for replacing missing teeth.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

As surgical specialists of the dental profession, oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete an additional four years of surgical training in a hospital-based residency program. Although these procedures are oftentimes regarded as minor, they require a high degree of skill, experience and knowledge. We believe that your implant surgery should only be managed by those who have successfully completed this advanced level of education and surgical experience.

BERKS ORAL SURGERY: EXPERTS IN DENTAL IMPLANTS • • •

Our practice has more experience in the placement of dental implants than any other in Berks County; our oral surgeons are experts in dental implant surgery. We are the only practice in the area with Robotic-Assisted Dental Implant Placement capabilities, which allows for placing dental implants PRECISELY for a natural look and feel. While dental implant placement is a surgical procedure, it is routine in our office due to the extensive amount of training our surgeons have received.

NEW TEETH TODAY Berks Oral Surgery is the EXCLUSIVE SURGICAL PROVIDER of NEW TEETH TODAY in Berks and beyond. The New Teeth Today process allows patients to have failing teeth removed, dental implants placed, and non-removable teeth inserted IN A SINGLE APPOINTMENT.

BERKSORALSURGERY.COM 610.374.4093

The New Teeth Today procedure has been performed hundreds of times in our office with tremendous success. Many New Teeth Today patients were told elsewhere that they were not candidates for dental implants or that they needed dentures. We have perfected ways to predictably place implants in nearly any situation, allowing opportunity for this life-changing procedure. berkscountyliving.com | JULY 2022

Rangoli Street Food Café Ready to swoon Bollywood-style, bowled over with the sheer joy of amazing flavor? Call Rangoli! Welcoming (and fun to know) are owners Krishna and Meg, who are — rightfully — very busy. That’s because the chai, naan, dal and even their samosas are made by hand. The Exploding Samosa plate is unique: Warm crust of the samosa pie and its delicious filling, with round peas poking forth, contrasts with cold toppings strewn everywhere — cilantro humming amidst chickpeas, sliced sweet white onions, chopped tomatoes, brown tamarind sauce, tart white yogurt… indescribably satisfying. Butter Chicken comes in a metal bowl, hot chicken bites covered with the softest of gravies, to scoop over fragrant, tender, longgrained basmati rice. Krishna asks with a broad smile: “How hot would you like your dish — from 1 to 10?” If wavering, he can adjust from a mild 3 to “almost 4” to please your palate. Many dishes are vegetarian. Do try the gloriously golden Cauliflower Korma entrée. Serving it at level 4 on the heat scale, Krishna asks, “How is it?” He then teases, “If you cry, I do have bread and milk in the kitchen!” Traditionally spicy warm chai and cold mango drinks can’t be beat. 212 W. Café de Colombia Restaurant & Bakery

Just over the Penn Street Bridge in downtown West Reading is the charming Spoonful Thai Bistro where, on a recent Sunday, eager patrons lined up to dine a half-hour before the restaurant opened. The explosively delicate flavors of Pad Thai are what first attracts new patrons, relates the chef. Famous for its complex, aromatic flavors and textures built around a base of thin noodles with egg, topped with crunchy bean sprouts, scallions and peanuts, this dish depends on being super-fresh to work its magical mouthwonders. Also wildly popular are Drunken Noodle: Pad Kee-Mao, flat-rice noodles pan-fried with garlic, egg, bamboo, onions, broccoli, bell peppers and basil. Chef points to sweet and spicy Red Curry and Crab Fried Rice, both bestsellers as well. This welcoming, cozy destination is within walking distance of boutiques and art galleries.

At this mother-daughter restaurant located within blocks of City Hall and the Santander Arena, Café de Colombia delivers a steady stream of traditional Colombian-style dishes as well as their own spin on grilled steak and hamburgers. Owned and operated by a mother-daughter team — Rubi and Karol Valencia — this destination is hopping busy. “We have two chefs and two line cooks, and a total of seven people running the restaurant,” says Rubi. “We are busy at lunchtime, and busy at night, doing dine in and take out.” When there’s a show at the Arena, the kitchen works nonstop, she relates happily. “It’s because our food is always fresh. People can taste the freshness in everything we make.” With four types of Fried Rice, entrees like Milanesa de Pollo (Breaded Chicken Breast) and Carne Asala (grilled steak which “melts in your mouth” says Rubi), all it takes is one visit to be hooked. The number-one seller? Bandeja Paisa, a traditional plate containing rice, beans, grilled steak, sausage, pork skin, yellow plantains, avocado and corn cake. “It’s pretty big — has a lot of stuff in it,” says Rubi, “and it describes Columbia up and down. Colombians like to eat a lot! We serve very big portions.” Cazuela de Frijoles is also a draw, but “second most popular is the Pechuga en Champinones — Chicken in Creamy Mushroom Sauce,” says Rubi. “That one is delicious. Everybody loves it.” The Café also specializes in mango, passionfruit and blackberry fruit drinks.

Data provided by SHOOK® Research, LLC. Data as of 6/30/21. Source: Forbes.com (April, 2022). Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisors ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person, virtual, and telephone due diligence meetings to measure best practices; also considered are: client retention, industry experience, credentials, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, such as: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. SHOOK’s research and rankings provide opinions intended to help investors choose the right financial advisor and are not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Past performance is not an indication of future results. Neither Forbes nor SHOOK Research receive compensation in exchange for placement on the ranking. Rankings are based on the opinions of Forbes and not representative nor indicative of any one client’s experience, future performance, or investment outcome and should not be construed as an endorsement of the advisor.
